1. People might laugh
and say it's just a fairy tale.Copy !req
2. That these mysterious things
couldn't really happen.Copy !req
3. But this is the true story of my mother.Copy !req
4. The man that Mother loved...Copy !req
5. was a wolf man.Copy !req
6. Mother was a student at
a university just outside of Tokyo.Copy !req
7. —Her tuition was paid for with scholarships
—This is what Socrates said:Copy !req
8. —and she worked a part-time job
to cover living expenses.
—This is what Socrates said:Copy !req
9. —and she worked a part-time job
to cover living expenses.
—In the textbook, it says...Copy !req
10. "The wise men of the world
may have great knowledge of many things—Copy !req
11. but goodness, truth, beauty, and arete..."Copy !req
12. One day in early summer,Copy !req
13. Mother saw Father for the
first time at the university.Copy !req
14. Wearing a shirt with a stretched-out collar,
using no textbook—Copy !req
15. Mother said he was
completely different from the other studentsCopy !req
16. as she watched him
from behind earnestly taking notes.Copy !req
17. Please wait.Copy !req
18. This is the attendance sheet.
If you don't turn it in, you'll be marked absent.Copy !req
19. —So—
—I'm...Copy !req
20. not a student here.Copy !req
21. What?Copy !req
22. If that bothers you, I won't come anymore.Copy !req
23. Please, wait!Copy !req
24. I don't care if you are a student or not,Copy !req
25. but the lecture can be hard
to understand without a textbook.Copy !req
26. Do you want to share mine?Copy !req
27. "Hokushin Dry Cleaners"Copy !req
28. It will be ready on Friday.
Thank you very much.Copy !req
29. Thank you for waiting.Copy !req
30. I'll put this here, then.Copy !req
31. I'll take this.Copy !req
32. Here, thank you.Copy !req
33. The accusers in this case were the poet Meletus,Copy !req
34. the politically powerful Anytus,
and the sophist Lycon.Copy !req
35. Meletus acted as their representative,Copy !req
36. but Anytus is said to have
pulled the strings from behind.Copy !req
37. What do you think is fun?
What kind of food do you like?Copy !req
38. What were the people you loved
in the past like?Copy !req
39. Why are you called "Hana"?Copy !req
40. My name?Copy !req
41. Yeah.Copy !req
42. When I was born,
cosmos were blooming in the garden.Copy !req
43. They hadn't been planted by anyone,
but grew there naturally.Copy !req
44. My dad said that looking at them
made him think of my name.Copy !req
45. He wanted me to be a child
who always smiled, like the flowers.Copy !req
46. Even when things got hard,Copy !req
47. to just keep smiling,
even if the smile became forced.Copy !req
48. Because then I could
overcome most things, he said.Copy !req
49. That's why during Dad's funeral,
I was smiling the whole time.Copy !req
50. But then, my relatives said that was improper,
and they were very angry with me.Copy !req
51. But... I suppose
it really was improper, wasn't it?Copy !req
52. It wasn't improper.Copy !req
53. I'm glad.Copy !req
54. "Hokushin Dry Cleaners"Copy !req
55. "Hakujuji"Copy !req
56. Even in the same housing complex,
each room is completely different inside.Copy !req
57. Families with money, poor families,
big families, people living alone,Copy !req
58. families with babies,
elderly living alone...Copy !req
59. I bet it'd be nice to have my own house.Copy !req
60. To say, "I'm home" and take off my shoes,
wash my face and hands, and sink into a chair.Copy !req
61. That'd be nice.Copy !req
62. I'd build a bookcase.Copy !req
63. And once that bookcase was full of books,
I'd build a new bookcase.Copy !req
64. I'd be able to do whatever I wanted
because it'd be my own house.Copy !req
65. Then, I'll say "Welcome home," if you want.Copy !req
66. Hana.Copy !req
67. What is it?Copy !req
68. There's something I have to tell you.Copy !req
69. You can tell me anything.Copy !req
70. Actually—Copy !req
71. I'll tell you tomorrow.Copy !req
72. Okay.Copy !req
73. "Hokushin Dry Cleaners"Copy !req
74. "Hakujuji"Copy !req
75. "Hakujuji"
"Christmas Cakes"Western Sweets & Coffee"Copy !req
76. "Hakujuji"Copy !req
77. "Hakujuji"Copy !req
78. Hana.Copy !req
79. I'm sorry, Hana.Copy !req
80. I'm sorry.Copy !req
81. I've never told anyone before.Copy !req
82. I was scared.Copy !req
83. I was afraid you'd leave if I told you,
but I should have told you sooner.Copy !req
84. I should have shown you.Copy !req
85. Shown me?Copy !req
86. Close your eyes for a second.Copy !req
87. For longer than that.Copy !req
88. Can I open them yet?Copy !req
89. Hana,Copy !req
90. what do I look like to you?Copy !req
91. She found out that
transforming during the full moonCopy !req
92. and attacking people was just a legend.Copy !req
93. "The world is full of things
I don't know," Mother thought.Copy !req
94. Were you surprised?Copy !req
95. Will you leave me now?Copy !req
96. But you're shaking.Copy !req
97. Are you afraid?Copy !req
98. I'm not afraid.Copy !req
99. Because it's you.Copy !req
100. Father was a descendant of the Honshuu wolf,Copy !req
101. which had become extinct
about a hundred years ago.Copy !req
102. With both wolf and human blood,
he was the last of his kind.Copy !req
103. When Father was a child, his parents told him
about the history of his extinct ancestors.Copy !req
104. They told him not to reveal the truth
to anyone, and then died.Copy !req
105. After that, he was taken in
by relatives who knew nothing of thisCopy !req
106. and had a hard time as he grew into an adult.Copy !req
107. After getting his driver's license,
he went to the city to look for work.Copy !req
108. Unknown and unheeded by men,
Father said that he had lived in hiding until now.Copy !req
109. "Natural Birth: Kind to your body and soul"Copy !req
110. "Hakujuji"Copy !req
111. Mother gave birth to me
in that small apartment.Copy !req
112. It was snowing.Copy !req
113. Not at the hospital,
without even a midwife,Copy !req
114. my parents delivered me by themselves.Copy !req
115. Mother was worried that
if I had been born as a wolf,Copy !req
116. the doctors would have been surprised.Copy !req
117. I'm glad she was born safely.Copy !req
118. This is just the beginning.Copy !req
119. Do you think she will be a kind child?Copy !req
120. She might be a smart kid.Copy !req
121. I wonder what kind of adult she will be?Copy !req
122. A nurse, a teacher, or a baker—Copy !req
123. whatever it is, I want her
to have a job she loves.Copy !req
124. I want her to have a happy,
healthy life free of troubles.Copy !req
125. Let's watch over her until she grows up.Copy !req
126. Yeah.Copy !req
127. My little brother was born
in the spring of the next year.Copy !req
128. It was raining that day.Copy !req
129. Suddenly, Father was nowhere to be seen.Copy !req
130. I don't know what Father was thinking that day.Copy !req
131. Maybe he instinctively went
to hunt for food for his new baby.Copy !req
132. Maybe he wanted
something nutritious for Mother,Copy !req
133. who was recovering from the birth.Copy !req
134. "Driver's License"Copy !req
135. "I'm leaving the kids to you,"
Mother thought she could hear him say.Copy !req
136. Leave them to me.
I'll make sure to raise them properly.Copy !req
137. Mother had a lot of trouble with us after that,
but I don't remember anything about it.Copy !req
138. Num nums.Copy !req
139. Wait a minute, Yuki. I'm making it now.Copy !req
140. Num nums!Copy !req
141. I said, it's almost done.Copy !req
142. Num nums!Copy !req
143. Yuki!Copy !req
144. When I was angry or upset,Copy !req
145. my fur would bristle,
and I would turn into a wolf.Copy !req
146. Oh all right, you can have a biscuit first.Copy !req
147. Apparently, I was always hungry,Copy !req
148. crying for food from morning until night.Copy !req
149. Completely different from
my sickly brother, Ame, who ate little.Copy !req
150. Mother had to quit school
and leave her part-time jobCopy !req
151. in order to take care of us.Copy !req
152. That was close...Copy !req
153. We lived on the small savings
Father had left behind.Copy !req
154. That was close...Copy !req
155. According to Mother,
my brother and I seemed like we weren't sureCopy !req
156. if we were supposed to be humans or wolves.Copy !req
157. "Pediatric Care"Copy !req
158. They got me...Copy !req
159. "Child Care Encyclopedia"Copy !req
160. Since she couldn't ask
those around her for advice,Copy !req
161. she had no choice but to study on her own.Copy !req
162. Breastfeeding every two hours, day and night.Copy !req
163. When Ame wouldn't suck on his own,Copy !req
164. she learned to feed him
with cotton pads dipped in breast milk.Copy !req
165. "Living with Wolves"Copy !req
166. But when he wouldn't
drink any milk or stop crying,Copy !req
167. she didn't know what to doCopy !req
168. except pat him on the back
and comfort him the whole night.Copy !req
169. As a result, Mother was
quickly becoming exhausted.Copy !req
170. I'm okay.Copy !req
171. Thanks to this, even if it
was just for a short time,Copy !req
172. she could fall asleep at a moment's notice.Copy !req
173. Mommy?Copy !req
174. What is it?Copy !req
175. What really caused problems
was when we got sick.Copy !req
176. Yuki?Copy !req
177. Yuki?Copy !req
178. Yuki—!Copy !req
179. The pediatrician or the veterinarian—
she didn't know which one to take us to.Copy !req
180. My daughter swallowed
some desiccant by mistake—Copy !req
181. She's two years old.Copy !req
182. Yes, she threw up.
There was no blood.Copy !req
183. It says "silica gel" on it.
Um, is it dangerous...?Copy !req
184. What? Her appetite?Copy !req
185. I'm hungry!Copy !req
186. Is that so? She's okay?Copy !req
187. She regretted not asking Father
about how he was raised as a child.Copy !req
188. I wanna go for a walk.Copy !req
189. Yuki, that's—Copy !req
190. Walk!Copy !req
191. You were sick just a little while ago. So—Copy !req
192. Walk!Copy !req
193. Okay, okay.
Now, put your ears away.Copy !req
194. Okay, let's go for a walk!Copy !req
195. I said, put your ears away!Copy !req
196. Okay!Copy !req
197. Hello. Aw, how cute.Copy !req
198. He said you're cute. Isn't that nice?Copy !req
199. Oh, sorry!Copy !req
200. It's okay.Copy !req
201. But that wasn't the only problem.Copy !req
202. What time do you think it is?
Shut him up!Copy !req
203. I'm very sorry.Copy !req
204. You keep making such
a racket night after night!Copy !req
205. I'm really very sorry.Copy !req
206. At least discipline your kids properly—!Copy !req
207. Shh... It's okay.Copy !req
208. The contract said pets
are not allowed here, didn't it?Copy !req
209. I don't have any pets.Copy !req
210. Don't lie to me.
I know what's going on.Copy !req
211. If you think you can do whatever you want,Copy !req
212. then I'll have no choice
but to have you go elsewhere.Copy !req
213. You're caseworkers?Copy !req
214. Yes, we have some serious
misgivings about your children.Copy !req
215. What do you mean?Copy !req
216. Our records show that they've
never had regular checkups or vaccines.Copy !req
217. It's all right. They're healthy.Copy !req
218. If that's the case, can we at least see them?Copy !req
219. No, that's—Copy !req
220. Just a look will do.Copy !req
221. We just want to see if
what you're saying is true or not.Copy !req
222. You're not welcome—Copy !req
223. If you don't let us in, you could
be suspected of abuse or neglect!Copy !req
224. Please, leave!Copy !req
225. Hey—Copy !req
226. What is it, Mommy?Copy !req
227. What do you want to do from now on?Copy !req
228. Do you want to be human, or wolf?Copy !req
229. Huh?Copy !req
230. I'm thinking of moving.Copy !req
231. So that you can choose whichever one you want.Copy !req
232. Ever since the town hall
started presenting unoccupied houses,Copy !req
233. people who want to live
in the country have been coming steadily,Copy !req
234. but they never last long.Copy !req
235. As you can see, there's nothing here.Copy !req
236. The elementary school and hospital
are both thirty minutes away by car.Copy !req
237. The junior high is two and a half hours
by bus and train, one way.Copy !req
238. That's five hours round trip!Copy !req
239. No matter how much you want
to raise your children in a good environment—Copy !req
240. The town is a lot more convenient,
in my opinion.Copy !req
241. Wow...Copy !req
242. It's so big...Copy !req
243. And I know the rent is practically free,Copy !req
244. but you know, the cost of repairs
is nothing to laugh at.Copy !req
245. Instead of calling it an unoccupied house—
oh, you can keep your shoes on—Copy !req
246. —it's more like an abandoned house.Copy !req
247. But at least there's electricity,
and the mountain stream isn't dried out,Copy !req
248. and they said you could use
whatever is in the shed.Copy !req
249. That's a field, isn't it?Copy !req
250. Oh, this place isn't really suitable
for growing your own food.Copy !req
251. Animals come down from the mountains
and damage the crops.Copy !req
252. Even if you make the effort
to grow vegetables, they'll all get eaten.Copy !req
253. This place is full of unoccupied houses
because the humans are getting kicked out.Copy !req
254. Then, the neighbors are—?Copy !req
255. Neighbors? There isn't anyone around for miles.
Shall we look at a different place?Copy !req
256. There might be a better place near the village...Copy !req
257. I've decided.Copy !req
258. What?Copy !req
259. I've decided on this place.Copy !req
260. Why?Copy !req
261. Wow! What is this place?Copy !req
262. Our new home.Copy !req
263. Oopsie daisy!Copy !req
264. It's slanted!Copy !req
265. Oh, hello Mr. Ant!Copy !req
266. Wow, what's this?Copy !req
267. Stomp! Stomp!Copy !req
268. How is it? Do you like it?Copy !req
269. I like it!Copy !req
270. I want to go home.Copy !req
271. She said she wanted a place
with no neighbors close by.Copy !req
272. She was a little different,
if you know what I mean.Copy !req
273. What about her husband?Copy !req
274. I don't know...Copy !req
275. Her income?Copy !req
276. I'm not sure...Copy !req
277. Then how does she expect
to take care of her kids?Copy !req
278. Oh, Grandpa Nirasaki!
We'll be in your care from now on.Copy !req
279. Look, look! Mommy, look!Copy !req
280. Tada—!Copy !req
281. Come here, birdie—Copy !req
282. C'mon, come here—Copy !req
283. "Yuki - Age 5"
"Ame - Age 4"Copy !req
284. Thank you very much.Copy !req
285. Thank you.Copy !req
286. Good evening.Copy !req
287. Good evening.Copy !req
288. Hey, wait, is that her?Copy !req
289. Let's go—Copy !req
290. Splash!Copy !req
291. I guess we'll have to be
more frugal from now on.Copy !req
292. Frugal?Copy !req
293. I was just thinking that we should at least
be able to grow our own vegetables.Copy !req
294. I'll help!Copy !req
295. Wait here, okay?Copy !req
296. Okay.Copy !req
297. "Home Garden"Copy !req
298. These please.Copy !req
299. Okay.Copy !req
300. These, too.Copy !req
301. "The Wolf is Coming"Copy !req
302. Oh, Yuki!Copy !req
303. It's our little secret that
you two are wolf children.Copy !req
304. Right.Copy !req
305. If you were to suddenly become wolves,
everyone would be very surprised.Copy !req
306. So you cannot become wolves
in front of other people.Copy !req
307. Promise?Copy !req
308. Promise!Copy !req
309. And one more thing.Copy !req
310. If you meet other animals in the mountains,
you can't act like you are better than them.Copy !req
311. Why not?Copy !req
312. Because Daddy will feel sad about it.Copy !req
313. Okay?Copy !req
314. Okay!Copy !req
315. "'We'll never forgive you!' The angry
villagers chased after the wolf with guns."Copy !req
316. "'I'm sorry! I won't do it again, '
the boastful wolf cried as he ran away."Copy !req
317. Oh no!Copy !req
318. Why?Copy !req
319. I don't know. I wonder what happened...Copy !req
320. Hello? Excuse me!Copy !req
321. What?Copy !req
322. Is it okay if I take
the fallen leaves from the woods?Copy !req
323. What did you say?Copy !req
324. The fallen leaves!Copy !req
325. No one would ask
for permission to take that stuff!Copy !req
326. Thank you very much!Copy !req
327. I wonder how long she'll last.Copy !req
328. She'll start talking about convenience stores
and karaoke soon enough.Copy !req
329. You got that right.Copy !req
330. I'll get it right this time...Copy !req
331. Mom... my...Copy !req
332. What?Copy !req
333. Ame!Copy !req
334. What happened?Copy !req
335. You calico cat!Copy !req
336. You're weak even though you're a wolf,
so they've got it in for you.Copy !req
337. They're just scratches.
Nothing to worry about.Copy !req
338. You won't be able to survive like that!Copy !req
339. Yuki.Copy !req
340. Do the "all better" thing.Copy !req
341. All better, all better.Copy !req
342. I wouldn't lose to a wild boar!Copy !req
343. You saw a wild boar?Copy !req
344. Yup, and a monkey and a serow.
But I wasn't scared at all.Copy !req
345. It was fun when they ran away
when I chased them.Copy !req
346. And—Copy !req
347. Yuki.Copy !req
348. And then when I peed—Copy !req
349. Do you remember your promise?Copy !req
350. That you wouldn't act like
you were better than the other animals?Copy !req
351. But—Copy !req
352. Please.Copy !req
353. Fine.Copy !req
354. Thank you.Copy !req
355. Do the "all better" thing again.Copy !req
356. All better, all better.Copy !req
357. But, how do wolf children
become adults, anyway?Copy !req
358. Yuki, wait!Copy !req
359. Piggyback.Copy !req
360. Already?Copy !req
361. You're too slow! Hurry up!Copy !req
362. "Wolves start learning to hunt
at around four months old.Copy !req
363. First, they learn what hunting is
with mice and other small animals.Copy !req
364. As they get older,
they form teams with adult wolves..."Copy !req
365. We're a team!Copy !req
366. No, we're not.Copy !req
367. Fine, be that way.Copy !req
368. Don't go too far!Copy !req
369. I know!Copy !req
370. Let's go home...Copy !req
371. Ame, I wonder if this
wild grass is edible... Let's see...Copy !req
372. I got it!Copy !req
373. Got it!Copy !req
374. Oh, look at that, Ame!Copy !req
375. All better, all better.Copy !req
376. Mommy, look at this! It's a cormorant!
There was a stream over there, and...Copy !req
377. Shh...Copy !req
378. Mommy...Copy !req
379. Hmm?Copy !req
380. Why is the wolf always the bad guy?Copy !req
381. You mean, in the picture books?Copy !req
382. Everyone hates them,
and they're always killed in the end...Copy !req
383. If that's the case,
I don't want to be a wolf.Copy !req
384. You're right. But you know,
Mommy likes wolves.Copy !req
385. Even if everyone else hates the wolf,
I'll take the wolf's side.Copy !req
386. Mommy! Mommy!Copy !req
387. What's wrong?Copy !req
388. They wilted again.Copy !req
389. What?Copy !req
390. Diseased... All of them? Don't tell me...Copy !req
391. Mommy...Copy !req
392. What's going to happen to us now?Copy !req
393. Mommy's no good like this.
I've got to learn more!Copy !req
394. Will you help me again?Copy !req
395. Sure.Copy !req
396. Thanks.Copy !req
397. Go inside.Copy !req
398. Okay.Copy !req
399. Hello!Copy !req
400. I was going to visit earlier,
but it got so busy around here...Copy !req
401. It's hard to grow your own food, isn't it?Copy !req
402. Even when I do what it says in the book,
I keep messing up.Copy !req
403. But this is a nice place, isn't it?
With nature all around us.Copy !req
404. Nature, ha!Copy !req
405. Plants don't grow overnight, you know.Copy !req
406. Huh?Copy !req
407. At this rate, it'll be the same
no matter how many times you try.Copy !req
408. Isn't that what you think?Copy !req
409. T-That's...Copy !req
410. Don't smile! Why do you smile?Copy !req
411. Even if you smile,
you won't be able to do anything.Copy !req
412. That person's scary.Copy !req
413. No, it's Mommy's fault
for not knowing anything.Copy !req
414. Even though you're an adult?Copy !req
415. I should have asked
your Daddy about more things.Copy !req
416. It's raining cats and dogs!Copy !req
417. Hello...Copy !req
418. Um...Copy !req
419. Here, this is for you.Copy !req
420. What are they?Copy !req
421. Seed potatoes.Copy !req
422. You mean the ones you plant in the fields?Copy !req
423. Is there anything else you can do with them?Copy !req
424. Don't worry about what Dad said.
That's just how he is.Copy !req
425. No, it was my fault.Copy !req
426. Hello!Copy !req
427. Sorry.Copy !req
428. Don't worry about it.Copy !req
429. Here.Copy !req
430. Grandpa Nirasaki,
thank you for the seed potatoes.Copy !req
431. Ah, are you trying to let them go to waste?Copy !req
432. You have to start over from the soil.Copy !req
433. You won't get anything done hoeing like that.Copy !req
434. I'm sorry...Copy !req
435. Um, what about the fertilizer...?Copy !req
436. Did you use leaves when you prepared the soil?Copy !req
437. Yes.Copy !req
438. Then you don't need fertilizer.Copy !req
439. When you're done, clear this field, too.Copy !req
440. I don't need such a big field.
I just need to grow enough for my kids and me.Copy !req
441. Did you hear me?Copy !req
442. Yes...Copy !req
443. Make ridges in the soil.Copy !req
444. Okay.Copy !req
445. Leave more space in between.Copy !req
446. Okay.Copy !req
447. That's too low. Make them higher.Copy !req
448. Okay.Copy !req
449. In a week, plant them cut-side down.
Don't water them. Just leave them!Copy !req
450. Um, thank you for teaching me how to...Copy !req
451. Mommy, are you okay?Copy !req
452. Ow...Copy !req
453. Hello!Copy !req
454. Come with us.Copy !req
455. Huh?Copy !req
456. It's okay, just come.Copy !req
457. What?Copy !req
458. Come on, let's go.Copy !req
459. Hey—Copy !req
460. Yes?Copy !req
461. If you plant chamomile and cabbage together,Copy !req
462. bugs won't attack
and the flavors will be better.Copy !req
463. No, you want celery with your cabbage.Copy !req
464. No, no, it's better for novices to use this.Copy !req
465. No, no, no,Copy !req
466. you can't fill up a stomach on chamomile.Copy !req
467. You should plant them shallowly like this.Copy !req
468. No, you should water the hole
before you put anything in.Copy !req
469. No, no, you can water them later.
Plant them first.Copy !req
470. No, no, you're wrong.Copy !req
471. You should just sprinkle
the extra fertilizer like this.Copy !req
472. If you put too much,
it'll just bring more bugs.Copy !req
473. No, give me that. You have to pile it on.Copy !req
474. No, you only need a little.Copy !req
475. If you do what this guy says,
you'll definitely fail.Copy !req
476. That's you!Copy !req
477. What?Copy !req
478. What did you say?Copy !req
479. Wood vinegar?Copy !req
480. It's made from the smoke
when charcoal is produced.Copy !req
481. And poultry manure.
There are instructions inside.Copy !req
482. Thank you for coming all this way to help.Copy !req
483. No, no.Copy !req
484. Sorry about showing up
without warning like this.Copy !req
485. It's no problem.Copy !req
486. It's hard working the land
if you're not used to it, isn't it?Copy !req
487. I still have a lot I have to learn.Copy !req
488. There are a lot of city folks
who get discouragedCopy !req
489. and leave right after moving here.Copy !req
490. Other young people...?Copy !req
491. Oh no, these were retired old men.
It was hilarious how weak they were mentally.Copy !req
492. I don't know if it means anything if I say it,
but this isn't an easy place to live off the land.Copy !req
493. The drainage isn't very good.Copy !req
494. And we get a lot of snow.Copy !req
495. We have to help each other.Copy !req
496. We thought you didn't want
anything to do with the neighbors.Copy !req
497. There are only a few young mothers around,
so it's nice to have someone else around.Copy !req
498. Let us know if you have any questions.Copy !req
499. Then...Copy !req
500. What? You're living off your savings?Copy !req
501. But I need to start working soon.Copy !req
502. It's hard to find work around here.Copy !req
503. Everyone leaves their kids
at the preschool and commutes to work.Copy !req
504. Right?Copy !req
505. What's a preschool?Copy !req
506. What?Copy !req
507. Why don't Ame and I go?Copy !req
508. —Well, that's because...
—I want to go to preschool, too!Copy !req
509. No.Copy !req
510. I wanna go!Copy !req
511. No!Copy !req
512. I wanna go I wanna go I wanna go...!Copy !req
513. I wanna go!Copy !req
514. I wanna go to the preschool...!Copy !req
515. Yuki, hurry up and finish your food.Copy !req
516. I know it's supposed to be a secret...Copy !req
517. but I can stay human.Copy !req
518. But you know...Copy !req
519. I can do it...Copy !req
520. Y-Yuki...!Copy !req
521. Hana, did you get a dog?Copy !req
522. Um, yeah...Copy !req
523. Isn't that a wolf?Copy !req
524. —What? N-No, that's...
—Isn't it, dear?Copy !req
525. Don't be stupid!Copy !req
526. There are no wolves in Japan anymore.
That's a shepherd mixed with something else.Copy !req
527. Right, Hana? Am I right? Am I right?Copy !req
528. Oh? The dog's gone.Copy !req
529. Hello, Mrs. Nirasaki!Copy !req
530. Oh hello, Yuki. Aren't you friendly today.Copy !req
531. Oh, you and the dog have matching clothes!Copy !req
532. That's cute.Copy !req
533. Yu... Yuki...Copy !req
534. What's wrong, Hana?Copy !req
535. Hello?Copy !req
536. Hello!Copy !req
537. I wonder where Grandpa Nirasaki is...Copy !req
538. Oh, these grew nicely.Copy !req
539. It was thanks to everyone's help.Copy !req
540. Ours were destroyed, so this'll really help.Copy !req
541. Destroyed? By what?Copy !req
542. By a wild boar.Copy !req
543. Here, take this.Copy !req
544. This much—?Copy !req
545. The boar, that bastard...Copy !req
546. Oh, thank you for bringing this.Copy !req
547. It came and dug everything up
without making a sound.Copy !req
548. It came all the way down
to Sakai's fields this year.Copy !req
549. Here, take this in return. Watch out, it's heavy.Copy !req
550. The only fields with
no animal damage are yours, Hana.Copy !req
551. It's strange, even though
you're so deep in the mountains.Copy !req
552. Do you have some kind of trick?Copy !req
553. No, I don't...Copy !req
554. Everyone wants to know how you did it.Copy !req
555. What's a trick?Copy !req
556. I need to pee!Copy !req
557. Yuki's a lively child, isn't she?Copy !req
558. Could it be...?Copy !req
559. What is it?Copy !req
560. Oh, no, never mind.Copy !req
561. Wow, thank you very much.Copy !req
562. Don't mention it.Copy !req
563. Thanks for the potatoes.Copy !req
564. It's been a while since we had eggs.Copy !req
565. I'm glad to help.Copy !req
566. Let me know when you run out!Copy !req
567. Oh my, isn't that cute!Copy !req
568. Hmm?Copy !req
569. What?Copy !req
570. Ready, lift.Copy !req
571. Oh, you don't have to give us
something so big...Copy !req
572. Don't worry about it.Copy !req
573. It was just sitting in the storage shed.Copy !req
574. But—Copy !req
575. Please take it.
If we bring it back, Gramps'll get mad at us.Copy !req
576. Grandpa Nirasaki?Copy !req
577. He's always talking about you, Hana.Copy !req
578. Because he's fallen for her.Copy !req
579. Come on, he's already ninety.Copy !req
580. But he even told everyone
to help her and everything.Copy !req
581. Idiot! He said not to say anything
about that, remember?Copy !req
582. So that's what it was...?Copy !req
583. I finally understand
why I needed a bigger field.Copy !req
584. I don't like it.Copy !req
585. What?Copy !req
586. Why are you always smiling and laughing?Copy !req
587. Don't laugh.Copy !req
588. What's so funny?Copy !req
589. We moved here trying
to get away from prying eyes...Copy !req
590. When did we end up in the care
of the people from the village?Copy !req
591. It was hard at first,
but I think we'll do fine here.Copy !req
592. Wow, look at that!Copy !req
593. M-Mommy—!Copy !req
594. Mommy—! Mom—Copy !req
595. Ame!Copy !req
596. Mom! Ame's fallen—!Copy !req
597. Mommy! Mommy—!Copy !req
598. Ame!Copy !req
599. Ame! Ame!Copy !req
600. Ame—!Copy !req
601. Mom... my...Copy !req
602. Ame!Copy !req
603. Mom... my...Copy !req
604. Ame... Ame!Copy !req
605. A-Ame!Copy !req
606. Open your eyes! Ame!Copy !req
607. Open your eyes!Copy !req
608. Ame, Ame, Ame...Copy !req
609. Open your eyes...Copy !req
610. Mommy... That's... too tight...Copy !req
611. Ame!Copy !req
612. You know what?Copy !req
613. I found a crested kingfisher.Copy !req
614. It was a really nice-looking bird.
I felt like even I could catch it today.Copy !req
615. It was completely different
from how it usually feels.Copy !req
616. I wasn't scared. Suddenly,
I felt like I could do anything.Copy !req
617. So then, I—Copy !req
618. Why are you crying?Copy !req
619. What are we doing here?Copy !req
620. Mother said later that she had
never been more frightened in her life.Copy !req
621. After that incident, Ame seemed
like a completely different person.Copy !req
622. "Yuki - Age 6"
"Ame - Age 5"
"Yuki - Age 5"Copy !req
623. When spring came, I wanted to go to
elementary school like everyone else, it was inevitable.Copy !req
624. So, to persuade Mother,
I followed her every order to the full extent.Copy !req
625. It was worth it because
she finally agreed to let me go.Copy !req
626. However—Copy !req
627. No matter what happens—Copy !req
628. I won't turn into a wolf. I know already!Copy !req
629. Don't forget your promise!Copy !req
630. I'll be fine!Copy !req
631. Then remember,
"Piggy promise, promise kept."Copy !req
632. What's that?Copy !req
633. It's a charm to keep you from becoming a wolf.Copy !req
634. A charm?Copy !req
635. That's how you do it.Copy !req
636. Piggy...Copy !req
637. promise, promise kept.Copy !req
638. Hurry up!Copy !req
639. It was the first time in my lifeCopy !req
640. that I had ever been surrounded
by so many people.Copy !req
641. —Don't push me!
—I had wanted to go so badly...Copy !req
642. —Stop pushing me!
—... but when it finally came down to it,Copy !req
643. I wasn't sure if I would be okay or not.Copy !req
644. But that was just at the beginning.Copy !req
645. Daddy, I'm off!Copy !req
646. I'm going now!Copy !req
647. Okay, be careful.Copy !req
648. I will!Copy !req
649. 'Morning, Shino!Copy !req
650. Good morning, Yuki!Copy !req
651. I saved you a seat!Copy !req
652. Thanks!Copy !req
653. "1st Grade"
"2nd Grade"Copy !req
654. Who knows the answer to this question?Copy !req
655. —I do!
—I do! I do! I do! I do! I do!Copy !req
656. No running in the halls!Copy !req
657. —You can do it!
—Go, Yuki!Copy !req
658. Wow, Yuki!Copy !req
659. —You're so fast!
—You're amazing!Copy !req
660. "Townspeople Division"Copy !req
661. —Thank you.
—Thank you.Copy !req
662. "Jobs & Employment"
Sorry for the wait.Copy !req
663. This is...Copy !req
664. "Niikawa Nature Sanctuary"
"Nature Conservationist Assistant Wanted"Copy !req
665. "Hometown Nature"Copy !req
666. Thank you for waiting. Shall we go?Copy !req
667. My name is Tendo, and I
am a nature conservationist.Copy !req
668. Welcome to Niikawa Nature Sanctuary.Copy !req
669. I look forward to working with you.Copy !req
670. A nature conservationist's job
is not just to protect nature.Copy !req
671. Environmental education, field surveys,
the conservation of plants and animals—Copy !req
672. These three pillars of conservancy
are made possible by the support of volunteers.Copy !req
673. We do many different types of work,
so while we are specialists,Copy !req
674. we also need to be able to do
a little of everything.Copy !req
675. So, we are looking for someone who can
help the conservationist with all the work, but...Copy !req
676. Honestly speaking, we can't pay very much.
We can pay enough to cover training expensesCopy !req
677. for someone studying
to become a conservationist,Copy !req
678. but we can't afford much more than that.Copy !req
679. A high schooler's part-time job
pays a lot more per hour.Copy !req
680. Even knowing all that...Copy !req
681. do you still want to do it?Copy !req
682. Um... I heard that you have a wolf here...Copy !req
683. This is our timber wolf.Copy !req
684. He's very quiet.Copy !req
685. He's not that young anymore.Copy !req
686. Excuse me, Director—?Copy !req
687. Excuse me for a moment.Copy !req
688. Nice to meet you. I came
because I have something to ask you.Copy !req
689. He's a wolf's child.Copy !req
690. His father, the wolf, died.Copy !req
691. I'm his mother,
but I don't know how to raise a wolf.Copy !req
692. How did you learn the ways of the wolf?Copy !req
693. Will you tell us how
you were raised in the forest?Copy !req
694. Sorry about that.Copy !req
695. A wealthy person got
special permission to keep him as a pet,Copy !req
696. but when the owner died there was
no one to take him, so he came to live with us.Copy !req
697. Apparently, he was born in the Moscow Zoo.Copy !req
698. So he isn't from the wild?Copy !req
699. I think it's rare to see wild wolves in zoos.Copy !req
700. If they're bred, the babies
are sent out to be fostered.Copy !req
701. There are also wild birds and raccoon dogs
who are brought here when they get hurt.Copy !req
702. After we treat them—Copy !req
703. I'm going to start coming here from now on.Copy !req
704. Ame, you'll be okay coming with me, right?Copy !req
705. I'll learn about
the mountains and nature as I work,Copy !req
706. and teach you the things I learn.Copy !req
707. It was my first time seeing a real one.Copy !req
708. A wolf?Copy !req
709. Was Daddy like that, too?Copy !req
710. No, not at all.Copy !req
711. I'm glad.Copy !req
712. Why?Copy !req
713. Because he seemed kind of sad, somehow.Copy !req
714. I wanted to meet Daddy.Copy !req
715. Mommy wants to see him again, too.Copy !req
716. As Mother settled into her new job,
I was undergoing a huge shock.Copy !req
717. Bunko, yours is so nice!Copy !req
718. Keno, yours is pretty, too!Copy !req
719. I found a four-leaf clover!Copy !req
720. Me, too!Copy !req
721. Yuki, did you find anything?Copy !req
722. Yeah, look!Copy !req
723. I found out that no other girls
played with rat snakes for fun.Copy !req
724. Look, these used to be my mom's.Copy !req
725. They're so pretty.Copy !req
726. My parents bought this for me
for my last birthday.Copy !req
727. Lucky!Copy !req
728. Yuki, show us your treasure box, too!Copy !req
729. Okay!Copy !req
730. Ooh, what's inside?Copy !req
731. Look!Copy !req
732. I was also the only girl who collected
small animal bones and dried reptiles.Copy !req
733. The moment I realized
that other girls didn't do those things,Copy !req
734. I was so embarrassed.Copy !req
735. Hurry up!Copy !req
736. That was when I decided.Copy !req
737. From then on, I was going to act
more graceful and ladylike.Copy !req
738. Don't laugh! I'm seriously worrying about this!Copy !req
739. Why don't you just do what you want, Yuki?Copy !req
740. I don't want people looking at me funny!Copy !req
741. I guess it can't be helped.Copy !req
742. Huh?Copy !req
743. When Mother made a new dress for me,
I remember being really happy.Copy !req
744. Good morning.Copy !req
745. Thanks to the dress,
I was able to fit in with my classCopy !req
746. —and get along with my friends.
—Good morning!Copy !req
747. Good morning!Copy !req
748. Oh, Yuki, your dress is so cute!Copy !req
749. It's wonderful!Copy !req
750. —Lucky!
—Let's go!
—Heaven only knows how much that dress helped me.Copy !req
751. The next year,Copy !req
752. it was hard to get Ame to school.Copy !req
753. Get it? It's "Piggy promise, promise kept."Copy !req
754. School's this way!Copy !req
755. "Happy first day of school!"
"1st Grade"Copy !req
756. "Let's get along!"
"2nd Grade"Copy !req
757. "Full of energy!"
"1st Grade"Copy !req
758. "Let's be friends!"
"2nd Grade"Copy !req
759. "Please and Thank You"
"3rd Grade"Copy !req
760. "Let's fly together!"
"4th Grade"Copy !req
761. "Let's figure it out!"
"3rd Grade"Copy !req
762. Good morning.Copy !req
763. Oh, Ame, is it a school holiday?Copy !req
764. No.Copy !req
765. So you're skipping?Copy !req
766. Yeah.Copy !req
767. You can come here anytime.Copy !req
768. Sorry for always bringing him here.Copy !req
769. —Yes, this is the observation pond.
—Ah, you're going bird-watching.Copy !req
770. —You can see frogs that still have their tails.
—One moment, please. You'll find it...Copy !req
771. —Hana, can you help me for a sec?
—... over there on your right.Copy !req
772. Coming!Copy !req
773. Attention, everyone!Copy !req
774. Let me introduce a transfer student.
This is Sohei Fujii.Copy !req
775. Why don't you greet everyone?Copy !req
776. I'm Sohei. Nice to meet you.Copy !req
777. Nice to meet you!Copy !req
778. Hey, do you have dogs at your house?Copy !req
779. Huh? Why?Copy !req
780. You smell kind of like animals.Copy !req
781. We don't have any dogs.Copy !req
782. Really? That's weird.
I totally thought you had dogs.Copy !req
783. What is it?Copy !req
784. Huh? Oh, the smell—Copy !req
785. Smell? What smell?Copy !req
786. Maybe it's just my imagination...Copy !req
787. Which one should I pick...?Copy !req
788. I'll go with this one!Copy !req
789. Aw man, seriously?Copy !req
790. Oh, Yuki!Copy !req
791. Yuki, you should come join us. Sohei's funny.Copy !req
792. Oh, I have to return this book.Copy !req
793. What's up with her?Copy !req
794. She's not usually like that...Copy !req
795. Hey, Yuki, you know—Copy !req
796. Oh, Yuki—Copy !req
797. You know what?Copy !req
798. Hey, Yuki!Copy !req
799. Yuki—Copy !req
800. C'mon, Yuki—Copy !req
801. Tell me the truth!Copy !req
802. About what?Copy !req
803. Did I do something to you?Copy !req
804. You didn't do anything.Copy !req
805. Do you dislike me
because I'm a transfer student?Copy !req
806. That's it, isn't it?Copy !req
807. I said, it's nothing.Copy !req
808. Then why are you avoiding me?Copy !req
809. I'm not avoiding you!Copy !req
810. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
811. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
812. —Piggy—
—Hey!Copy !req
813. Wait!Copy !req
814. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
815. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
816. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
817. Piggy promise, promise kept.Copy !req
818. Stop following me!Copy !req
819. Don't come any closer!Copy !req
820. What are you doing?Copy !req
821. Don't touch me!Copy !req
822. Yuki! Yuki!Copy !req
823. "Tsururindo"Copy !req
824. Hana, phone!Copy !req
825. Ok!Copy !req
826. Hello?Copy !req
827. Sorry to bother you during work.Copy !req
828. Do you know how much
his head was bleeding?Copy !req
829. It was my ear.Copy !req
830. Yuki.Copy !req
831. She wouldn't talk no matter
what we asked her...Copy !req
832. Were you really the one who hurt him?Copy !req
833. Did you apologize?Copy !req
834. Apologize.Copy !req
835. I said, apologize.Copy !req
836. I'm sorry.Copy !req
837. I'm very sorry for what my child has done.Copy !req
838. That's how it is, Mrs. Fujii.Copy !req
839. There is the school's insurance
for the medical bills, so—Copy !req
840. Do you really think this can be
taken care of with just an apology?Copy !req
841. What were you planning to do
if he lost his hearing?Copy !req
842. Parents are responsible
for their children's actions, aren't they?Copy !req
843. Would you go into debt
or sell your house to compensate us?Copy !req
844. Now, now, this isn't the place to—Copy !req
845. If you don't let me
hear what she's thinking, I'll—Copy !req
846. A wolf.Copy !req
847. What?Copy !req
848. It was a wolf that did it.Copy !req
849. A wolf did it.Copy !req
850. Sohei?Copy !req
851. What are you saying?Copy !req
852. Sohei!Copy !req
853. Sohei?Copy !req
854. Don't decide whose fault it is already!Copy !req
855. I know!Copy !req
856. She's been different lately—Copy !req
857. Stop it!Copy !req
858. That's what I thought.Copy !req
859. What happened to Sohei?Copy !req
860. He left early.Copy !req
861. Why?Copy !req
862. Because he got hurt.Copy !req
863. How did he get hurt?Copy !req
864. That's—Copy !req
865. Who hurt him?Copy !req
866. Um...Copy !req
867. Yuki!Copy !req
868. —Yuki!
—I thought it was her.Copy !req
869. —Thought so.
—What's wrong?Copy !req
870. I'm like a detective—Copy !req
871. Quiet! Everyone, quiet down!Copy !req
872. It didn't work.Copy !req
873. No matter how many times I tried the charm.Copy !req
874. Will I be chased out of school?Copy !req
875. Will we have to leave our house?Copy !req
876. I'm sorry...Copy !req
877. I'm sorry!Copy !req
878. Mom, I'm sorry!Copy !req
879. All better, all better.Copy !req
880. "School Bus"Copy !req
881. Sohei?Copy !req
882. Homework. From Sohei.Copy !req
883. From Sohei.Copy !req
884. Ow...Copy !req
885. Sohei!Copy !req
886. She went to play at Shino's house today.Copy !req
887. I see...Copy !req
888. Oh, wait a minute.Copy !req
889. You came a long way, didn't you?Copy !req
890. Thank you for coming by every day.Copy !req
891. I don't want Yuki to stop coming to school.Copy !req
892. You know, that day,
you said that a wolf did it, right?Copy !req
893. What did you mean by that?Copy !req
894. That was... I mean...Copy !req
895. You might not believe me,
but that day, I saw a wolf for a split second,Copy !req
896. and when I came to, I was bleeding.
So the wolf was the one who did it.Copy !req
897. I mean, it wasn't Yuki's fault.Copy !req
898. I know other kids
are saying stupid things, but...Copy !req
899. I see.Copy !req
900. Can I ask you one more thing?Copy !req
901. Do you hate wolves?Copy !req
902. Not really.Copy !req
903. Me neither.Copy !req
904. Hey, you wanna see this?Copy !req
905. What?Copy !req
906. It's cool, isn't it? Wanna touch it?Copy !req
907. Here.Copy !req
908. Does it hurt?Copy !req
909. It itches.Copy !req
910. Let's go!Copy !req
911. I'm going now.Copy !req
912. Where are you going?Copy !req
913. I'm going to Sensei's place.Copy !req
914. Who's Sensei?Copy !req
915. Sensei... is Sensei.Copy !req
916. I see. Will you be okay by yourself?Copy !req
917. Yeah.Copy !req
918. Be careful.Copy !req
919. Okay.Copy !req
920. Don't stay out too late.Copy !req
921. Okay.Copy !req
922. Where's Yuki?Copy !req
923. She went back to school today.Copy !req
924. Oh, that's good.Copy !req
925. What about Ame?Copy !req
926. He comes and goes, I guess.Copy !req
927. That's fine.Copy !req
928. There's something to be saidCopy !req
929. for a guy who stops
going to school in elementary school.Copy !req
930. Edison and I were both like that.Copy !req
931. There you go, saying such
irresponsible things again!Copy !req
932. Speaking of which,
does anyone live on the mountain?Copy !req
933. On the mountain?Copy !req
934. Ame said he was going to Sensei's place...Copy !req
935. I was sure he was talking
about Grandpa Nirasaki, but...Copy !req
936. I don't know about that...Copy !req
937. No one would go into the mountains
during the busy farming season.Copy !req
938. Sensei knows everything.Copy !req
939. He knows everything about the mountain.Copy !req
940. I didn't think you'd make friends
with someone older than you.Copy !req
941. Bring him over to our house sometime.
I want to thank him, and—Copy !req
942. Sensei doesn't meet with humans.Copy !req
943. He doesn't come down to the village
like the wild boars and bears.Copy !req
944. But it's probably okay if it's you, Mom.Copy !req
945. Sensei is the master
of the entire mountain in these parts.Copy !req
946. Thank you for always taking care of Ame.Copy !req
947. "Hometown Nature"Copy !req
948. "Hometown Nature"Copy !req
949. You can take a bath now.Copy !req
950. Yuki, you should have Sensei teach you, too.Copy !req
951. Your hunting will get a lot better.Copy !req
952. There's a trick to running
through the forest at full speed.Copy !req
953. And to reading the terrain, too.Copy !req
954. You'll learn a lot.Copy !req
955. How to find water and how to read the weather,Copy !req
956. and marking your territory
and getting along with others—Copy !req
957. There's no way I'm going.Copy !req
958. Why not?Copy !req
959. What about you?
Why won't you come to school?Copy !req
960. Because the mountain's interesting.Copy !req
961. Because there's a lot I don't know.Copy !req
962. I don't need to know.Copy !req
963. Why not?Copy !req
964. Just come to school already.Copy !req
965. I don't want to.Copy !req
966. Why not?Copy !req
967. Because I'm a wolf.Copy !req
968. You're a human.Copy !req
969. I'm a wolf.Copy !req
970. I've already decided not to become a wolf.Copy !req
971. Why not?Copy !req
972. Hey, why not?Copy !req
973. Because I'm human! Do you hear me?
Because I'm human!Copy !req
974. But why?Copy !req
975. Stop asking so many questions!Copy !req
976. You're a wolf, aren't you?
Why don't you act like one?Copy !req
977. Shut up! You don't know anything!Copy !req
978. About what?Copy !req
979. If you don't come to school tomorrow,
I'll never forgive you!Copy !req
980. I'm not going!Copy !req
981. I'll never forgive you!Copy !req
982. I'm not going!Copy !req
983. Wanna fight?Copy !req
984. What is it? What's that sound?Copy !req
985. Yuki! Ame!Copy !req
986. Stop it, both of you!Copy !req
987. Stop it, Yuki! Ame!Copy !req
988. Yuki...Copy !req
989. Ame...?Copy !req
990. Ame...Copy !req
991. Yuki and Ame are both
starting to walk their own paths.Copy !req
992. Even though that's what I wanted...
Why am I so uneasy?Copy !req
993. Why is that?Copy !req
994. My last summer in elementary school,
there were a number of record-breaking storms.Copy !req
995. Ame started to go
into the mountains all the time.Copy !req
996. He seemed to be very worried
about the effects of the heavy rainsCopy !req
997. on Sensei and the plants
and animals of the mountains.Copy !req
998. Ame!Copy !req
999. Where have you been all this time?Copy !req
1000. You're cold. Hang on, I'll get the bath ready.Copy !req
1001. Sensei... hurt his leg, and he can't move.Copy !req
1002. He'll probably die soon.Copy !req
1003. Someone has to take over
all the things he has been doing on the mountain.Copy !req
1004. Ame.Copy !req
1005. You can't go into the mountains anymore.
Do you understand?Copy !req
1006. You're only ten years old. You're still a child!Copy !req
1007. Even if a ten-year-old wolf is an adult,
you're still—Copy !req
1008. Please.Copy !req
1009. Please don't go into the mountains anymore.Copy !req
1010. Please... For me.Copy !req
1011. C'mon! Over here!Copy !req
1012. Shoot it! Pass it!Copy !req
1013. —By the way, did you know?
—Know what?Copy !req
1014. "6th Grade"
I overheard my parents talking about it.Copy !req
1015. And?Copy !req
1016. They said Sohei's mom...Copy !req
1017. is getting married!Copy !req
1018. —What?
—No way!Copy !req
1019. Why?Copy !req
1020. Probably because she's beautiful.Copy !req
1021. Then Sohei will have a new dad?Copy !req
1022. That's good.Copy !req
1023. But Sohei doesn't know about this yet.Copy !req
1024. What?Copy !req
1025. —No way!
—Really?Copy !req
1026. You can't tell anyone about this!Copy !req
1027. All right! Yes!Copy !req
1028. How many points do we have now?Copy !req
1029. Good morning.Copy !req
1030. Today, it will be sunny during the day,Copy !req
1031. but heavy rain will start
in the evening and continue overnight.Copy !req
1032. —It's so humid!
—Please use caution
if you go out during this time.Copy !req
1033. First, the meteorological report.Copy !req
1034. Yuki—Copy !req
1035. Hm?Copy !req
1036. —Stay with Mom today.
—Today will start mostly sunny with high
atmospheric pressure within the prefecture,Copy !req
1037. —Why?
—But the weather front
will extend to the Sea of Japan,Copy !req
1038. —You'll miss the bus—Copy !req
1039. —Ok!
—causing stormy weather
from the evening into the night.Copy !req
1040. —You stay at home with her.Copy !req
1041. —I'm leaving!
—And now for the regional forecast.Copy !req
1042. —Take care!
—In the northwest region,
it will be sunny followed by rain,Copy !req
1043. with lightning in some parts.Copy !req
1044. The southwest region
will be sunny followed by rain.Copy !req
1045. —Ame?
—The northeast region
will be sunny with scattered showers.Copy !req
1046. Ame!Copy !req
1047. —Come inside.
—Don't forget your umbrellas
when you go out today.Copy !req
1048. So the problem is asking, how far
can the swallow fly in three hours?Copy !req
1049. First of all, do you know
what seventy km/h means?Copy !req
1050. If you take seventy km,Copy !req
1051. km/h means the number
of kilometers traveled per hour.Copy !req
1052. So in one hour,
the swallow can fly seventy kilometers.Copy !req
1053. The weather front along
the Sea of Japan is moving south,Copy !req
1054. and atmospheric conditions
have become extremely unstable.Copy !req
1055. Because of this,Copy !req
1056. there will be lightning and sudden gusts
accompanying the heavy rains.Copy !req
1057. Predicted rainfall is,
depending on the location,Copy !req
1058. over seventy mm per hour in the flat areas,
and near the mountains,Copy !req
1059. over one hundred mm per hour.Copy !req
1060. The weather station has issued
a heavy rain flood warning.Copy !req
1061. Use extreme caution due to possible landslides,
rises in river level, submersion of buildings,Copy !req
1062. as well as other damage.Copy !req
1063. And now, for today's
eleven o'clock weather alerts.Copy !req
1064. In the northwest region,
heavy rain, lightning, and flood warnings.Copy !req
1065. Have a seat, everyone. Sit down!Copy !req
1066. It looks like there will be
severe rainstorms soon,Copy !req
1067. so afternoon classes have been canceled.Copy !req
1068. Yay!Copy !req
1069. "6th Grade"Copy !req
1070. Your parents are being contacted
to come pick you up.Copy !req
1071. Until they come, gather in the gym
according to where you live.Copy !req
1072. A blackout?Copy !req
1073. I have to go.Copy !req
1074. I understand. I'll head over now.Copy !req
1075. Ame, let's go pick up Yuki together.Copy !req
1076. Ame?Copy !req
1077. Ame?Copy !req
1078. Where are you?Copy !req
1079. Ame!Copy !req
1080. Ame!Copy !req
1081. Ame!Copy !req
1082. Ame!Copy !req
1083. Where are you, Ame?Copy !req
1084. Ame!Copy !req
1085. Takahiro?Copy !req
1086. Mommy!Copy !req
1087. Keiko!Copy !req
1088. Daddy!Copy !req
1089. My parents sure are late.Copy !req
1090. Don't worry.Copy !req
1091. But—Copy !req
1092. If we have to stay at the school overnight,Copy !req
1093. we can play cards all night.Copy !req
1094. Cards?Copy !req
1095. I wanna play.Copy !req
1096. Oh, that sounds like fun!Copy !req
1097. It'll be like camp!Copy !req
1098. I'll go get the cards from the classroom.Copy !req
1099. Okay.Copy !req
1100. Do you even know how to play cards?Copy !req
1101. I only know how to play Old Maid.Copy !req
1102. Stupid!Copy !req
1103. Don't fight, you two.Copy !req
1104. Shino!Copy !req
1105. Oh, Dad!Copy !req
1106. You're so late.Copy !req
1107. Sorry, sorry. It's a raging storm out there.
Yuki, we can take you home, too.Copy !req
1108. Oh yeah, let's go, Yuki.Copy !req
1109. But—Copy !req
1110. C'mon, hurry up.Copy !req
1111. Thank you for offering,
but I think my mom will be here soon.Copy !req
1112. You don't have to hold back.Copy !req
1113. Yeah.Copy !req
1114. I don't want to miss my mom when she comes.Copy !req
1115. That's true. We'll leave first, then.Copy !req
1116. Bye!Copy !req
1117. Bye.Copy !req
1118. Ame!Copy !req
1119. Where are you? Ame!Copy !req
1120. Ame!Copy !req
1121. Ame...Copy !req
1122. Where...?Copy !req
1123. Sou's taking a long time.Copy !req
1124. Yuki—Copy !req
1125. What, did Yuki go home already?Copy !req
1126. Attention everyone!Copy !req
1127. We'll take everyone that's left
home in the school's car.Copy !req
1128. "Emergency Exit"Copy !req
1129. Ame!Copy !req
1130. Ame!Copy !req
1131. Ame!Copy !req
1132. Wait!Copy !req
1133. Wait, Ame!Copy !req
1134. Ame...Copy !req
1135. Where are you...?Copy !req
1136. Why are you here?Copy !req
1137. Because...Copy !req
1138. you were being slow.Copy !req
1139. Oh, no one's here.
Did everyone go home already?Copy !req
1140. I guess we're the only ones
not getting picked up.Copy !req
1141. I wonder if something happened to my mom.Copy !req
1142. It's cold.Copy !req
1143. Let's walk around.Copy !req
1144. Yuki.Copy !req
1145. Oh, wait for me!Copy !req
1146. What'll we do if no one comes to pick us up?Copy !req
1147. We can just live at school.Copy !req
1148. We can't do that.Copy !req
1149. We can sleep in the nurse's office at night.Copy !req
1150. What about food?Copy !req
1151. We can eat leftover cafeteria food.Copy !req
1152. What if no one ever comes to pick us up?
Will you live at school forever?Copy !req
1153. I just have to get a job.
Delivering newspapers or something.Copy !req
1154. You're just a kid. No one's going to hire you.Copy !req
1155. I'll lie about my age.
I'll tell them that I'm in middle school.Copy !req
1156. Do I look like a middle schooler?Copy !req
1157. No.Copy !req
1158. Really?Copy !req
1159. I want to grow up faster.Copy !req
1160. Me too.Copy !req
1161. Ame...Copy !req
1162. He's probably shivering somewhere...Copy !req
1163. He's probably lost... crying...Copy !req
1164. I have to... protect... him...Copy !req
1165. I have to... protect...Copy !req
1166. Is anyone still here?Copy !req
1167. He's gone.Copy !req
1168. My heart's still pounding.
Hey, why did we hide?Copy !req
1169. Hey!Copy !req
1170. It's like the ocean.Copy !req
1171. I feel like it's going to suck me in.Copy !req
1172. Will we really end up living here secretly?Copy !req
1173. If our parents don't come,
then we have no choice, do we?Copy !req
1174. Why? Your mom will come for sure.Copy !req
1175. No, she won't.Copy !req
1176. Why not? She's...Copy !req
1177. My mom got married.Copy !req
1178. And she's having a baby.
So once it's born, I won't be needed anymore.Copy !req
1179. But she was so worried about you...Copy !req
1180. I'm fine with that, though.Copy !req
1181. I'll run away from home
and become a boxer or a wrestler.Copy !req
1182. I'll live like a lone wolf.Copy !req
1183. What do you think? Will it work?Copy !req
1184. You'll be defeated in a second.Copy !req
1185. You have no muscles.Copy !req
1186. I'll train.Copy !req
1187. I'll train and live on my own.Copy !req
1188. Sou, I want to be like you,Copy !req
1189. and be able to smile
even when I'm telling the truth.Copy !req
1190. Sou...Copy !req
1191. That day,Copy !req
1192. the wolf that hurt you was me...Copy !req
1193. It was me.Copy !req
1194. I kept thinking that I had to say something.Copy !req
1195. It hurt to hold it in.Copy !req
1196. I already knew. I knew the whole time.Copy !req
1197. I didn't tell anyone your secret.Copy !req
1198. I won't tell. So...Copy !req
1199. don't cry anymore.Copy !req
1200. I'm not crying, these are drops of rain.Copy !req
1201. Thank you.Copy !req
1202. Ame... Where did you go?Copy !req
1203. Ame?Copy !req
1204. Ame.Copy !req
1205. I was looking for you.Copy !req
1206. Come on, hurry back
so we can go pick up Yuki...Copy !req
1207. Hana.Copy !req
1208. I missed you so much!Copy !req
1209. It's been hard, hasn't it?Copy !req
1210. I'm sorry.Copy !req
1211. It's okay.Copy !req
1212. I was watching you the whole time.Copy !req
1213. Yeah, I know.Copy !req
1214. You raised our children well.Copy !req
1215. No, that's not true. I keep messing up.Copy !req
1216. It's true.Copy !req
1217. Yuki and Ame have both grown up fine.Copy !req
1218. That's not true. Because...Copy !req
1219. Oh... Ame...Copy !req
1220. That's right. Ame's gone.Copy !req
1221. Ame!Copy !req
1222. Ame's fine.Copy !req
1223. But...Copy !req
1224. He's fine.Copy !req
1225. He's already an adult.Copy !req
1226. An adult?Copy !req
1227. He's found his own world.Copy !req
1228. Ame?Copy !req
1229. Oh, Ame!Copy !req
1230. Are you going to leave?Copy !req
1231. But...Copy !req
1232. I still haven't been able to do anything for you.Copy !req
1233. I still haven't...Copy !req
1234. But you're still...Copy !req
1235. Wait!Copy !req
1236. Ame!Copy !req
1237. Ame...!Copy !req
1238. Ame...!Copy !req
1239. Ame...Copy !req
1240. Ame...Copy !req
1241. Be well...Copy !req
1242. Live a good life!Copy !req
1243. Goodbye.Copy !req
1244. Mother said that she
would never forget that morning.Copy !req
1245. The freshly washed beech leaves...
The freshly washed spider webs...Copy !req
1246. The freshly washed sky...Copy !req
1247. Everything glittering under the sun...
Like the world had been reborn overnight.Copy !req
1248. That was what Mother thought.Copy !req
1249. "Municipal Junior High School
Entrance Ceremony"Copy !req
1250. Next year, I left home to live in the middle school dormitory.Copy !req
1251. Looking back on the twelve years
she spent raising us,Copy !req
1252. Mother smiled, saying that it was
over in a moment, like a fairy tale.Copy !req
1253. "Junior High"Copy !req
1254. Very satisfying, after all,
like looking at a peak very far away.Copy !req
1255. That smile on her face makes me really happy.Copy !req
1256. Mother is living quietly
in that mountain house even now.Copy !req
1257. "Ame"
"The Forest is Alive"Copy !req
1258. "I hope to meet you soon,"Copy !req
1259. I always prayed as I rubbed my bellyCopy !req
1260. (Ooh ooh) What will you look like?Copy !req
1261. (Ooh ooh) What will you sound like?Copy !req
1262. I see my reflection in your big eyesCopy !req
1263. As teardrops spill onto your cheeksCopy !req
1264. (Num nums) Come here, the food's ready!Copy !req
1265. (Pitter patter) Come on, let's go for a walk!Copy !req
1266. Your eyes swollen, you sit
with your arms around your kneesCopy !req
1267. Tell me why you're crying, tell me everythingCopy !req
1268. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhereCopy !req
1269. No matter what happens, we'll be togetherCopy !req
1270. I love your smiling faceCopy !req
1271. It makes me feel better, even when I'm downCopy !req
1272. (Lalala lalala) Come here, let's sing!Copy !req
1273. (Aroo aroo) Come on,
let's raise our voices together!Copy !req
1274. I want you to grow up brightly and freelyCopy !req
1275. Running in the snow, counting cloudsCopy !req
1276. Playing in the rain, being blown by the windCopy !req
1277. Buried under flowers, playing grass kazoosCopy !req
1278. On four feet, on two feetCopy !req
1279. A new morningCopy !req
1280. A new windCopy !req
1281. Prepared just for youCopy !req
1282. A new morningCopy !req
1283. A new lightCopy !req
1284. The world is yours for the takingCopy !req
1285. A new morningCopy !req
1286. A new rainbowCopy !req
1287. The world is full of mysteryCopy !req
1288. Choosing one of two paths,
eyes fixed on a point far awayCopy !req
1289. Is there nothing else I can do for you?Copy !req
1290. Whenever you decide to leave,
I will see you off with a smileCopy !req
1291. (Ooh ooh) But I'll still be a little sadCopy !req
1292. (Aroo aroo) Please, live a good lifeCopy !req
