27. Hey, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.Copy !req
28. I found him.
I found him.Copy !req
29. His mother was right.Copy !req
30. He's about three miles south
of the old Butte Road.Copy !req
31. I got it.
On my way.Copy !req
32. Son.Copy !req
33. Son.Copy !req
34. Yeah, it's him all right.Copy !req
35. Whoa. Whoa, son. Now just where
do you think you're going, boy'?Copy !req
36. California.
Sure, kid.Copy !req
37. We all want to go
to California.Copy !req
38. My wife wants to go
to California.Copy !req
39. Joe. Come in, Joe.
You just stay put.Copy !req
40. Now what do you want
me to do with him?Copy !req
41. Take him to his
mother's place. She's remarried.Copy !req
42. Her name's Christine Bateman. She
lives on the south side of town.Copy !req
43. You got that?
Yeah, yeah, I got it.Copy !req
44. Okay, son, time to go.Copy !req
45. Upsy-daisy. Your mom's
waiting for you now.Copy !req
46. So, on these trips
that he takes,Copy !req
47. has he ever tried to see Corey
or Nick or his natural father?Copy !req
48. Christine!Copy !req
49. Oh, I'm sorry.
What did you say?Copy !req
50. Look, he just picks up his little
lunch pail... What is in that thing?Copy !req
51. And off he goes.Copy !req
52. I mean, he could go anywhere,
downtown, the canyons, the river.Copy !req
53. He doesn't go to the river. He
never even goes near the river.Copy !req
54. Okay. He stays away
from the river.Copy !req
55. But I'm telling you, anytime, I
mean, he could just pick up and go.Copy !req
56. The Happy Wanderer,Copy !req
57. at the stroke of midnight,
if he feels the urge,Copy !req
58. in the middle
of his Frosted Flakes.Copy !req
59. I got the neighborhood
on red alert,Copy !req
60. and I'm putting the cops
on overtime.Copy !req
61. Mr. Bateman!Copy !req
62. Though Jimmy is
a heavily traumatized boy,Copy !req
63. he has a certain fixation with
building, stacking things.Copy !req
64. These little monuments
he makes,Copy !req
65. I'd like to think
they mean something.Copy !req
66. I'd like to think that he's searching
for a way to express himself.Copy !req
67. But you don't.Copy !req
68. Look, we've been sending
this boy here for two years.Copy !req
69. I think it's time we started
exploring some, uh, alternatives.Copy !req
70. We're thinking about, uh, putting
him into an institution,Copy !req
71. a home.Copy !req
72. Is that something
original, Dad?Copy !req
73. I'm trying to cook you guys
a decent meal.Copy !req
74. You can't be living off
of burgers and pizza.Copy !req
75. It cannot possibly belong to one
of the four major food groups.Copy !req
76. It's a casserole, genius. Doesn't
it look like a casserole?Copy !req
77. Huh?Copy !req
78. We saw Jimmy
yesterday, Dad.Copy !req
79. Yeah?
So how is he?Copy !req
80. They're talking about
putting him in a home.Copy !req
81. That's Christine's decision. She
has custody now. You know that.Copy !req
82. Well, I'm, uh, I'm not really too hungry.
I'll grab some a little later.Copy !req
83. I wanna know about the pickup. I found
it this morning covered with mud.Copy !req
84. You took it again.Copy !req
85. Just gimme a break, please. This
has nothing to do with the pickup.Copy !req
86. It has everything
to do with it!Copy !req
87. I wanna know why you disobey me
when I give you a direct order.Copy !req
88. Why do you do this? They're
gonna put him in a home, Nick!Copy !req
89. He hasn't changed
ever since Jennifer.Copy !req
90. Dad! He doesn't do anything.
He doesn't say anything.Copy !req
91. What about it, man? What
about the rules around here?Copy !req
92. Don't call me "man,"
all right?Copy !req
93. - What? The pickup, the rules'? You
always do this. - Corey, come on.Copy !req
94. No, Dad, will you listen to me'? What,
you wanna see that happen? Huh'?Copy !req
95. You wanna see 'em put Jimmy in a home'?
Corey...Copy !req
96. Fine, Dad. Just because he's our half
brother, he doesn't matter, right'?Copy !req
97. Cor...Copy !req
98. Huh?Copy !req
99. Enjoy your casserole.Copy !req
100. Ooh.Copy !req
101. Corey?
Leave me alone.Copy !req
102. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?
It's been two years.Copy !req
103. Yeah, what do you care?Copy !req
104. Why don't you and I just go over to the Dairy
Queen, huh'? We'll kick back a couple.Copy !req
105. Come on, it's on me.
No.Copy !req
106. You didn't even care about him
when you had the chance.Copy !req
107. All you care about
is yourself.Copy !req
108. What bothers me is that you
seem to have no respect for meCopy !req
109. or no appreciation
for living in this house!Copy !req
110. What do you care
about what I do anyway?Copy !req
111. Jimmy's in a home
and you don't care.Copy !req
112. If Mom was still alive,
she'd be...Copy !req
113. - Don't you tell me what I care about,
young man. - You don't care about us!Copy !req
114. You steal my pickup and now
you're drinking, and I don't like it!Copy !req
115. You have no sense of
responsibility for this house!Copy !req
116. I do.Copy !req
117. For you to carry out
the trash is a big deal!Copy !req
118. South Dakota.Copy !req
119. Wash my truck every
once in a while. Arkansas.Copy !req
120. Nebraska.Copy !req
121. California.Copy !req
122. Come on.
Let's go.Copy !req
123. Jimmy.Copy !req
124. Jimmy, we're gonna
do a little traveling,Copy !req
125. just you and me.Copy !req
126. What do you think?Copy !req
127. California?Copy !req
128. Yeah.Copy !req
129. Yeah, California.Copy !req
130. Come on.Copy !req
131. Do you like chocolate?
Yeah.Copy !req
132. Good.
Get in.Copy !req
133. You understand, Mr. Woods, we don't have
the manpower to be pursuing runaways,Copy !req
134. even if the one boy
is handicapped.Copy !req
135. Hey, look, he's not handicapped.
Whatever he is.Copy !req
136. They were seen
hopping a truck.Copy !req
137. Uh, can we get to the, uh,
the point here?Copy !req
138. Woods, your son, Corey,
has taken Jimmy.Copy !req
139. They're both my sons.Copy !req
140. Oh. Okay. Okay.Copy !req
141. For the record, your two sons, one of
whom I am legally responsible for,Copy !req
142. have decided
to eat their way across...Copy !req
143. I don't see why we're standing
here talking about it.Copy !req
144. Because you are
missing the point.Copy !req
145. I have an obligation to
the welfare of this child.Copy !req
146. I have to see that he is returned here
for the kind of treatment he needs.Copy !req
147. Now, granted,
the police are looking.Copy !req
148. We've hired someone
to find him.Copy !req
149. Mr. Putnam.Copy !req
150. Mr. Putnam retrieves
runaways professionally.Copy !req
151. He's going to
bring back Jimmy.Copy !req
152. What about Corey?Copy !req
153. Well, Corey, uh, wants
to run away, doesn't he?Copy !req
154. I mean, even if we brought him
back, would it do any good'?Copy !req
155. You know, Bateman, I, uh, I
always knew that you were a jerk.Copy !req
156. I just, until now, thought
it was guilt by association.Copy !req
157. Pop.
What?Copy !req
158. I want to go with you. Forget it. You
can get a ride back with Bateman.Copy !req
159. I don't think so.
Uh, Mr. Woods. Excuse me.Copy !req
160. Just so you know, I make my
money by bringing kids in,Copy !req
161. and I don't make it if someone else
brings the kid in first. Uh...Copy !req
162. You catch my drift?Copy !req
163. So let's not be getting
in my way, okay?Copy !req
164. Have a nice day.Copy !req
165. We better drop by the house,
pick up some clothes.Copy !req
166. End of the
line, Ben? Yeah, it's my last stop.Copy !req
167. Come on.Copy !req
168. Do you have to make
such a pig out of yourself?Copy !req
169. Come on.Copy !req
170. Stay there.Copy !req
171. Hey! Jimmy!Copy !req
172. Hey, wait up!Copy !req
173. How about that cupcake?
We got plenty of Twinkies.Copy !req
174. Personally, I'm a Ho Ho man myself.
How about you?Copy !req
175. Okay.
So, according to thisCopy !req
176. we're in Goblin Valley.Copy !req
177. Great.Copy !req
178. I mean, I mean, I mean, it couldn't
be Happy Valley or Wonderful Valley.Copy !req
179. Goblin Valley.Copy !req
180. Why not Ax Murderer's Valley?Copy !req
181. Great.Copy !req
182. There's a bench outside. The bus'll be
here any minute. Stay here for a minute.Copy !req
183. Well, go ahead. Play.Copy !req
184. Two tickets
to California, please.Copy !req
185. You got someplace
specific in mind,Copy !req
186. or would you just like
to be dumped at the border?Copy !req
187. Is Los Angeles
specific enough?Copy !req
188. That's $226.Copy !req
189. Well, we only have $27.30.
Where does that get us?Copy !req
190. Nowhere. It's $34
just to St. George, Utah.Copy !req
191. That's it?Copy !req
192. Hey, Sootty, some of those
high school kids are up on the ridgeCopy !req
193. throwing rocks
at the highway again.Copy !req
194. Chase 'em on home,
will you? Over.Copy !req
195. 50,000? You got 50,000
on Double Dragon?Copy !req
196. Hey, Chester.
Hi, Mike.Copy !req
197. Here's Mrs. Johnson's
complaints this month.Copy !req
198. Not again.Copy !req
199. How'd you do it'? You
only played for five minutes.Copy !req
200. How the hell did you get 50,000 on Double
Dragon?Copy !req
201. I never got 50,000 on Double Dragon.
How'd you do it'?Copy !req
202. Hi. I'm Haley.Copy !req
203. If you don't tell me what
you're doing, I'm gonna scream.Copy !req
204. Uh, could you
scream quietly?Copy !req
205. What, do you think
I'm stupid?Copy !req
206. I saw you look
at that cop.Copy !req
207. What's his problem?Copy !req
208. He's just shy.Copy !req
209. - Shy a few bricks I'd say.
- No, he's okay.Copy !req
210. He just kicked ass
on Double Dragon.Copy !req
211. Get out of here. Him?Copy !req
212. Yeah. He could wax your tail.
No way.Copy !req
213. Wanna bet?
How much?Copy !req
214. $6.70.Copy !req
215. I don't have $6.70.Copy !req
216. Well, that's okay, 'cause, uh,
you got a bus ticket.Copy !req
217. You could cash it in.Copy !req
218. Let's see him beat that.Copy !req
219. Come on, Jimmy.Copy !req
220. Come on.Copy !req
221. What is he, some kind
of freak or something?Copy !req
222. That's it.Copy !req
223. Hey!Copy !req
224. Two tickets to St. George.
You conned me.Copy !req
225. I didn't. I won the bet.
Give me that money.Copy !req
226. Great! Great.Copy !req
227. Now I'm stuck here.Copy !req
228. Hey. Hey.Copy !req
229. Hmm?Copy !req
230. Where the hell are we?Copy !req
231. Oh! What is that,
doughnuts?Copy !req
232. Yeah. So'?Copy !req
233. It's disgusting.Copy !req
234. From the guy who steals
my pickup and stays up drinking,Copy !req
235. the guy with the foul mouth,
that's a compliment.Copy !req
236. Where are we?
Oh!Copy !req
237. We were supposed
to be heading west.Copy !req
238. That's the direction
the cupcake truck went.Copy !req
239. We're heading west.Copy !req
240. Wait a second. We're not heading west.
We're heading south.Copy !req
241. What the hell
have you been doing?Copy !req
242. I've been driving
the whole damn night.Copy !req
243. I must have stopped 5O times and asked
about where those kids are. Come on.Copy !req
244. Jeez.Copy !req
245. We're on the other side of the
canyons, man. Turn around.Copy !req
246. Gimme that thing.Copy !req
247. Pop! Pop!
Huh'?Copy !req
248. Get over!Copy !req
249. What are you doing?
Have you lost your mind?Copy !req
250. Look at him. He's making the
jump, it's his second time through,Copy !req
251. and he hasn't even
taken a hit yet.Copy !req
252. He's a wizard.Copy !req
253. So he can play Ninja Gaiden?
So what?Copy !req
254. So I got an idea.Copy !req
255. If he can beat me, why can't
he beat any old video head?Copy !req
256. We could pick up
some loose change.Copy !req
257. Are you kidding me?
That's warped.Copy !req
258. The kid's a natural. A genius. A pro.
He picks it up like lint.Copy !req
259. Why do you want to
haul him off to California?Copy !req
260. California.Copy !req
261. I got it.Copy !req
262. You want to go
to California,Copy !req
263. and you want to prove that Jimmy
doesn't belong in a home.Copy !req
264. Do you think they'd put him
in a home after he'd won this?Copy !req
265. A video game contest?Copy !req
266. - Haley, he's...
- He's what?Copy !req
267. Too crazy?
Too stupid?Copy !req
268. He's sure not the genius you are, trying
to get to California on 27 bucks.Copy !req
269. You don't believe
in him yourself.Copy !req
270. What does this matter
to you anyway?Copy !req
271. It's a business deal.Copy !req
272. If I can get you to California
and he wins, we split the money.Copy !req
273. Do you think I'd hang around
a pair like you for my health?Copy !req
274. Hey, sweetheart,
I'm looking for some kids.Copy !req
275. Pop, I'm starving!
We'll get 'em in the next town.Copy !req
276. Whoo!Copy !req
277. Hey! Now I warned you!
This is my living!Copy !req
278. Didn't I tell you
this was my living, huh?Copy !req
279. Son of a bitch.Copy !req
280. Oh, Jesus!Copy !req
281. All right. All right,
there's no cause to get crazy.Copy !req
282. It's very hot.Copy !req
283. This is a professional matter.Copy !req
284. Yeah!Copy !req
285. Huh?Copy !req
286. I don't appreciate this, Woods! You
got no class! No class at all!Copy !req
287. So, uh, now that we're here, you want
to go grab a bite to eat or what?Copy !req
288. We gotta plan a strategy.Copy !req
289. Lucky for you I know this highway like the
back of my hands. My dad's a trucker.Copy !req
290. Yeah?Copy !req
291. Yeah. He makes a weekly run between
Reno and Kansas City.Copy !req
292. That's where I live, Reno. You gotta
be very adult to live in Reno.Copy !req
293. It's the world's
biggest little city.Copy !req
294. Oh.Copy !req
295. Haley, are you sure
about these guys?Copy !req
296. Oh, don't you worry about them.
I'm telling you, I know truckers.Copy !req
297. They got a code.
A code?Copy !req
298. My dad sent me home early.
He likes me to watch the house.Copy !req
299. We got a really, really nice house.
Yeah?Copy !req
300. Where's your mom?
She packed it in.Copy !req
301. She was a showgirl.Copy !req
302. Great legs.Copy !req
303. I got her legs. What do you think?Copy !req
304. Okay, we gotta pool our money.
What do you got left?Copy !req
305. Um,Copy !req
306. $21.Copy !req
307. I got 87 from the bus ticket.Copy !req
308. - Oh, is this Reno?
- No, stupid.Copy !req
309. Well, you said it was the
world's biggest little city.Copy !req
310. I thought maybe I missed it.Copy !req
311. What are you doing? Let go of...
Corey, take the money!Copy !req
312. Haley!
Hang onto her, Larry!Copy !req
313. Jimmy, stay there! Stay there, Jimmy!
Look out, kid.Copy !req
314. Listen, kid,
all we want is the cash.Copy !req
315. Hey, stay away from me!Copy !req
316. You smell like... I'll get...Copy !req
317. Hey! Hey,
this is our money!Copy !req
318. Hey, this is our money!
It's our money! Hey! Hey!Copy !req
319. I got it! I got it!Copy !req
320. Well, that's some code
they got.Copy !req
321. You don't have my size?Copy !req
322. I don't care what brand it is,
just something to get me going.Copy !req
323. In your size,
with your price,Copy !req
324. all I got is these retreads,
which would be old whitewalls.Copy !req
325. Whitewalls?Copy !req
326. What the hell is that? Oh,
it's Corey's old video game.Copy !req
327. I found it in the back
of the pickup truck.Copy !req
328. I thought
the old one was broken?Copy !req
329. It was.
I fixed it.Copy !req
330. You fixed it?Copy !req
331. And you just hook it up?
You don't ask?Copy !req
332. It's not like I'm cutting tags off of
mattresses, Pop. It's just a video game.Copy !req
333. You oughta know.
You bought it for him.Copy !req
334. Thanks.
Thanks.Copy !req
335. Where are we'? Does it matter?
We're broke.Copy !req
336. Oh, yeah, you're telling me! You're
the one with all the trucker friends.Copy !req
337. The one who knows
all the codes.Copy !req
338. I got you this far, didn't I'? Oh,
I don't even know where "this" is!Copy !req
339. A lot of faith you got.
Oh, will you stop, Haley?Copy !req
340. I mean, we don't have any money.
Aren't you just a little scared'?Copy !req
341. I don't get scared!Copy !req
342. Now give me the 4 bucks
you're holding out on.Copy !req
343. What?
You flashed 21,Copy !req
344. you stashed 4
from the change at lunch.Copy !req
345. They didn't get it 'cause
you put it in your shorts.Copy !req
346. Now dish it up!Copy !req
347. You're getting awful personal,
you know.Copy !req
348. What are you doing?Copy !req
349. We've gotta find someone
dumb enough to sucker.Copy !req
350. And seeing how it's too warped
for you, I guess it's up to me.Copy !req
351. Wait a minute.
That's my 4 dollars.Copy !req
352. All right, now pay attention.
You might learn something here.Copy !req
353. Hey, I could beat you the way
you're going now. Oh, there you go.Copy !req
354. Perfect. They're salesmen.
Wait here.Copy !req
355. That's great. That's looking great.
That's far out. Great.Copy !req
356. That was a good one.
Good shot. Good. Good.Copy !req
357. - Not bad. Not bad.
- Thanks.Copy !req
358. You got some skill.
Some? What do you mean some?Copy !req
359. Oh, myself? No.
Not a challenge.Copy !req
360. Now my brother over here,
now he could beat you.Copy !req
361. Oh, go on.Copy !req
362. You're a monster, Jimmy. You snaked 'em.
Didn't he snake 'em'?Copy !req
363. Look at him.
He's smiling.Copy !req
364. You like this,
Jimmy, don't you?Copy !req
365. Yeah, we're on our way, Jimmy boy.
We're on our way.Copy !req
366. Geez, it's gonna be night.
I got an idea.Copy !req
367. What?
Follow me.Copy !req
368. What?
You'll see.Copy !req
369. I've spent plenty of nights
with my dad in these things.Copy !req
370. What, do you travel all
over with your dad'? If I want.Copy !req
371. He takes me across country
in summer when school's out.Copy !req
372. But sometimes he sends me
back early 'cause...Copy !req
373. 'Cause he don't want my whole
life to be on the road, you know?Copy !req
374. Yeah, well, don't you
have any friends?Copy !req
375. I got tons of friends.Copy !req
376. I got so many friends I don't
have room for any more.Copy !req
377. Sure.Copy !req
378. Well, don't you ever get, uh,
scared traveling all by yourself?Copy !req
379. I told you.
I don't get scared.Copy !req
380. Never?Copy !req
381. Okay, we have $47.12,Copy !req
382. which I think we can double, maybe
triple, by the time we get to Reno.Copy !req
383. Now, look. I got these Power
magazines to help Jimmy,Copy !req
384. so we can teach him the
secret tricks in each game.Copy !req
385. Do you believe
