4. May I borrow it?Copy !req
5. - It's in English.
- I have a dictionary.Copy !req
6. - Very good. Give it a go.
- Thank you.Copy !req
7. - Knock it off.
- Butt out!Copy !req
8. Better get going.Copy !req
9. Jiro...Copy !req
10. No more bullying, okay?Copy !req
11. You look quite the hero.Copy !req
12. I slipped and fell.Copy !req
13. - Fighting is never justified.
- I know.Copy !req
14. Go have your snack.Copy !req
15. Thank you.Copy !req
16. Big brother, you're back!Copy !req
17. I was waiting for you.
Let's pick bamboo grass.Copy !req
18. Big brother!Copy !req
19. I want to pick bamboo grass.Copy !req
20. You promised to go with me.Copy !req
21. I've got homework.Copy !req
22. That's not homework.Copy !req
23. It's an English magazine.Copy !req
24. What a stupid moustache.Copy !req
25. He's a famous Italian aircraft designer.Copy !req
26. His name is Caproni.
It says he's a count.Copy !req
27. - Your face is scratched.
- Leave it alone.Copy !req
28. I better put some iodine on it.Copy !req
29. Would you be quiet?Copy !req
30. Big brother, what are you doing?Copy !req
31. You're not allowed up here.Copy !req
32. You're not wearing glasses.Copy !req
33. Focusing on the stars

36. They're pretty.
See? Like that.Copy !req
37. There's so many of them.Copy !req
38. I'm a Japanese boy.Copy !req
39. I think this is my dream.Copy !req
40. This is my dream, you know.Copy !req
41. It's mine too.Copy !req
42. Your dream?Copy !req
43. Listen, Japanese boy.
You think we are sharing this dream?Copy !req
44. It's strange.Copy !req
45. You're Count Caproni, aren't you?
I'm very glad to meet you.Copy !req
46. Interesting. Yes, this is a dream.
This world is a dream.Copy !req
47. Welcome to my kingdom.Copy !req
48. I'm honored.Copy !req
49. Look at them.Copy !req
50. They will bomb the enemy city.
Most of them won't return.Copy !req
51. But the war will soon be over.Copy !req
52. Climb up, Japanese boy.Copy !req
53. This is my dream.
When the war is over, I will build this.Copy !req
54. Magnificent, isn't she?Copy !req
55. Let's fly.Copy !req
56. Instead of bombs,
she'll carry passengers.Copy !req
57. Of course we can't climb up here...Copy !req
58. but dreams are convenient.
One can go anywhere.Copy !req
59. Come, join me.
You can walk along the spar.Copy !req
60. Take a look.Copy !req
61. - She's beautiful, no?
- Yes, incredible.Copy !req
62. She'll carry a hundred people
across the Atlantic.Copy !req
63. Mr. Caproni?
I have a question.Copy !req
64. Do you think I could
design airplanes?Copy !req
65. I'll never be a pilot.
I'm too nearsighted.Copy !req
66. Listen, Japanese boy.Copy !req
67. I'm not a pilot.
I don't even know how to fly.Copy !req
68. To fly airplanes is simple.Copy !req
69. But I am a creator of airplanes.
An aeronautical engineer!Copy !req
70. Yes!Copy !req
71. Listen to me, Japanese boy.Copy !req
72. Airplanes are not tools for war.
They are not for making money.Copy !req
73. Airplanes are beautiful dreams.Copy !req
74. Engineers turn dreams into reality.Copy !req
75. Yes!Copy !req
76. Arrivederci. We'll meet again.Copy !req
77. Jiro, you should go to bed.Copy !req
78. You startled me.
I heard you talking to someone.Copy !req
79. Mother, I'm going to be
an aeronautical engineer.Copy !req
80. Really? That's a wonderful dream.Copy !req
81. Airplanes are beautiful dreams.
That's what he told me.Copy !req
82. I want to design beautiful airplanes.Copy !req
83. You, there.
Come, take my seat.Copy !req
84. Pardon me.Copy !req
85. Please.Copy !req
86. The wind feels wonderful.Copy !req
87. Miss, you'll lose your hat.Copy !req
88. Don't worry, Kinu.Copy !req
89. Watch out!Copy !req
90. Are you all right?Copy !req
91. Safe!Copy !req
92. Nice play.Copy !req
93. Thank you.Copy !req
94. "Le vent se lève."Copy !req

99. The boiler's going to blow!Copy !req
100. - What's wrong?
- Her leg.Copy !req
101. Show me.Copy !req
102. It hurts.Copy !req
103. Kinu, be brave.Copy !req
104. It's broken.
She can't walk like this.Copy !req
105. Miss, the boiler.
Please save yourself.Copy !req
106. That's nonsense.Copy !req
107. Nothing's going to explode.Copy !req
108. My suitcase.Copy !req
109. Now, try to relax.Copy !req
110. She can't walk.
Where do you live?Copy !req
111. - In Ueno.
- I'll get you there.Copy !req
112. - Fire.
- Let's go.Copy !req
113. - What about your luggage?
- It's not important.Copy !req
114. I'm so sorry.Copy !req
115. Hang on!Copy !req
116. We'd better hurry.Copy !req
117. One of my shirts.
It's brand new.Copy !req
118. You must be thirsty.Copy !req
119. The well's almost dry.
What about you?Copy !req
120. Thank you.Copy !req
121. The fire hasn't reached Ueno.Copy !req
122. I'm heading for the university.
What about you?Copy !req
123. I'll bring someone from home.Copy !req
124. I'll go with you.Copy !req
125. - Look after this, Kinu.
- I will.Copy !req
126. We'll be back soon.
Don't worry.Copy !req
127. Watch my suitcase.Copy !req
128. - Thank you.
- I'll leave her to you.Copy !req
129. But what's your name?Copy !req
130. That was some guy.
Don't you think, Kinu?Copy !req
131. Jiro! You picked a great day
to come back.Copy !req
132. How bad is it, Honjo?Copy !req
133. The whole east side is burning.Copy !req
134. That's everything we could carry.Copy !req
135. Got a smoke?Copy !req
136. A flying door? That's just great.
They'll never stop the fire now.Copy !req
137. Tokyo's finished.Copy !req
138. He really built it.
Caproni has giant dreams.Copy !req
139. Stop the camera!Copy !req
140. The wind's shifting.
It's coming this way.Copy !req
141. Is the wind still rising,
Japanese boy?Copy !req
142. Yes, it's a gale.Copy !req
143. Then you must live.
"Le vent se lève."Copy !req
144. "II faut tenter de vivre."Copy !req
145. Hey Jiro. Ready?Copy !req
146. All the new buildings
are old-fashioned.Copy !req
147. The streets are wider.Copy !req
148. Even the airplanes haven't changed.Copy !req
149. Welcome!Copy !req
150. Mackerel again?Copy !req
151. It's great.Copy !req
152. Every day's the same.
Same lunch, same lectures.Copy !req
153. Can I get an egg?Copy !req
154. The Western powers
are building all-metal aircraft.Copy !req
155. Try the pork sometime.Copy !req
156. We're more than ten years behind.Copy !req
157. What?Copy !req
158. Beautiful, isn't it?Copy !req
159. Look at that wonderful curve.Copy !req
160. You eat mackerel
to look at the bones?Copy !req
161. Come on, finish up.
We're going for coffee.Copy !req
162. Jiro sure is working hard.Copy !req
163. Fish bones.Copy !req
164. Is Mr. Horikoshi back from lunch?Copy !req
165. Jiro!Copy !req
166. Honjo, listen to this.Copy !req
167. The NACA has a standard
curve just like this bone.Copy !req
168. Do Americans eat mackerel too?Copy !req
169. Jiro, package for you.Copy !req
170. A lady brought this for you, sir.Copy !req
171. You were out,
so she left it with me.Copy !req
172. I see. Thank you.Copy !req
173. Present from your sweetheart?Copy !req
174. Got a smoke? Gimme one.Copy !req
175. - Jiro!
- Let him go.Copy !req
176. - Hello, Mr. Horikoshi.
- Back from school.Copy !req
177. Your guest is waiting.
A young lady.Copy !req
178. Oh, right.Copy !req
179. Honestly, where were you?Copy !req
180. Kayo, I'm sorry.Copy !req
181. I completely forgot.Copy !req
182. Really!Copy !req
183. - Where's Mother?
- At Uncle's.Copy !req
184. - Is she staying there?
- Just for one night.Copy !req
185. You've grown, Kayo.
And gotten very pretty, too.Copy !req
186. You're so mean.
You never ever come home.Copy !req
187. Oh, it's almost sunset already.Copy !req
188. I'll tell them I kept you.
Let's take the penny steamer.Copy !req
189. She must really like you.Copy !req
190. Come on, it's been two years.Copy !req
191. Didn't you try to see her again?Copy !req
192. Of course.
I went back once.Copy !req
193. The fire stopped at her street.Copy !req
194. See? There's the dock.Copy !req
195. Are you cold?Copy !req
196. I'm fine. I never dreamed
Tokyo would recover so quickly.Copy !req
197. Can I stay with you, Jiro?Copy !req
198. Father won't let me
live here by myself.Copy !req
199. I'll probably be in Nagoya
by the time you come.Copy !req
200. - With an airplane company?
- Yes.Copy !req
201. Men have it so good.Copy !req
202. I want to study medicine in Tokyo.Copy !req
203. A doctor? I think
you might be a good one.Copy !req
204. I think so too.Copy !req
205. I'll talk to Father
next time I'm home.Copy !req
206. Thanks. I'm counting on you.Copy !req
207. Jiro!Copy !req
208. There you are.Copy !req
209. - You made it.
- Finally.Copy !req
210. - We're on our way.
- Yes, we are.Copy !req
211. They must've been
heading for the city.Copy !req
212. There were hundreds of them.Copy !req
213. There's no work in the countryside.Copy !req
214. Another bank failure.
Which one is it this time?Copy !req
215. - Are those the customers?
- Looks like it.Copy !req
216. There were rumors.Copy !req
217. The economy's in the tank.
So is our new employer.Copy !req
218. COMBUSTION ENGINE CO.Copy !req
219. We've been waiting for you.
What took you so long?Copy !req
220. I was told to come
anytime in April.Copy !req
221. Then you should've come in March!Copy !req
222. I've got an assignment for you.Copy !req
223. It's the design for the wing strut fitting.Copy !req
224. I need it right away.
We're behind schedule already.Copy !req
225. In here.Copy !req
226. The data's ready.
This way.Copy !req
227. This is your desk.Copy !req
228. It's imported,
but no one likes it.Copy !req
229. Data here, hat goes there.Copy !req
230. Listen up! The Falcon Project
has a new engineer.Copy !req
231. He's the genius we've all
been hearing about.Copy !req
232. Introduce yourself.Copy !req
233. Jiro Horikoshi.Copy !req
234. Now get to work.Copy !req
235. Jiro, come on.Copy !req
236. It's lunchtime. Let's go.Copy !req
237. - The assembly plant?
- Yes, I'd like to take a look.Copy !req
238. Asking a green engineer to design
that fitting is practically hazing.Copy !req
239. Two.Copy !req
240. Excuse me.
Could we ask a favor?Copy !req
241. Look, it's really coming along.Copy !req
242. Sorry to bother you on your break.Copy !req
243. Not at all. You young engineers
should visit us more often.Copy !req
244. Honjo, the strut's already installed.Copy !req
245. I knew it.Copy !req
246. Kurokawa's just hazing you.
Is his fitting better than yours?Copy !req
247. Mr. Kurokawa's always hard
on new employees.Copy !req
248. Honjo, get up here
and take a look.Copy !req
249. I need your opinion.Copy !req
250. - What do you think?
- Looks strong enough.Copy !req
251. This is no good.
It's just like my design.Copy !req
252. Then it must be bad.Copy !req
253. Foreman, lunch break's over.Copy !req
254. Quiet.Copy !req
255. Fascinating! Aircraft are fascinating!Copy !req
256. Maybe they are, but we're late.Copy !req
257. I'm Hattori.Copy !req
258. Mr. Hattori is our chief engineer.Copy !req
259. Is this his first assignment?Copy !req
260. The strut fitting for the Falcon.Copy !req
261. That's no fitting.
Explain yourself, young man.Copy !req
262. Yes sir. This leaf spring
will absorb stress from the wing.Copy !req
263. The wire expands
and contracts automatically.Copy !req
264. It runs through the strut
to an anchor on the fuselage.Copy !req
265. But we'd have to
redesign the wing!Copy !req
266. You're right.
I haven't done the calculations yet.Copy !req
267. You're wasting your time.
Where's the assignment I gave you?Copy !req
268. It's finished.Copy !req
269. That looks like
a very clean design to me.Copy !req
270. It's perfect.Copy !req
271. Submit your work
as soon as you finish!Copy !req
272. - I'm heading out.
- Me too.Copy !req
273. What about Kurokawa's homework?Copy !req
274. Just finishing up.Copy !req
275. Oxen!Copy !req
276. They haul prototypes
to the airfield.Copy !req
277. The latest aircraft, hauled by oxen.
That's how backward we are.Copy !req
278. But they're wonderful creatures.Copy !req
279. Here she comes.Copy !req
280. Get ready!Copy !req
281. Approaching the mark.Copy !req
282. Damn it!Copy !req
283. - Did you get it?
- 13.3 seconds. 145 knots.Copy !req
284. Too slow.
We need ten more knots.Copy !req
285. She's too low.
The engine's not performing.Copy !req
286. Kurokawa!Copy !req
287. Representatives from the Army.Copy !req
288. An audacious design.Copy !req
289. - Another coup for Mitsubishi.
- Your Falcon is quite impressive.Copy !req
290. Power dive.
She's trying to break 200.Copy !req
291. - Parachute's open.
- Go get him!Copy !req
292. Mr. Kurokawa, we'll investigate
the cause when the weather clears.Copy !req
293. - What about the pilot?
- He's okay.Copy !req
294. That's good.Copy !req
295. Mr. Kurokawa, let's go.
We'll build Falcon Two.Copy !req
296. Do you think the strut fitting failed?Copy !req
297. No. I think the problem
is deeper and more complicated.Copy !req
298. I'll never forget what I saw today.Copy !req
299. It's like an endless road is
opening up before my eyes.Copy !req
300. There won't be a Falcon Two.Copy !req
301. The Army has decided
to go with a competing design.Copy !req
302. Today was our last chance
to change their minds.Copy !req
303. We're going to build a bomber
with help from Junkers.Copy !req
304. No more fighters for now.Copy !req
305. This is your chance to see Germany.
I've already approved it.Copy !req
306. - Still open?
- Ah, welcome back.Copy !req
307. You're later than usual.Copy !req
308. - Two slices of the usual.
- Coming up.Copy !req
309. There you are.Copy !req
310. Isn't anyone looking after them?Copy !req
311. Their parents work late.
They wait there every night.Copy !req
312. I feel bad closing the place up.Copy !req
313. I see. Well, thanks.Copy !req
314. Come again.Copy !req
315. You must be hungry.
Here's something to eat.Copy !req
316. It's sponge cake.
I just bought it.Copy !req
317. Go ahead, take it.Copy !req
318. Come on!Copy !req
319. You here, Jiro?Copy !req
320. Too bad about the Falcon.
I heard they axed it.Copy !req
321. Sponge cake? You have
some strange eating habits.Copy !req
322. What did you expect?Copy !req
323. Did you think she was going to
smile and say thank you?Copy !req
324. Of course not.Copy !req
325. Well, maybe I did.Copy !req
326. There are dozens of hungry kids
right here in this neighborhood.Copy !req
327. The cost of one fitting would feed
that kid's family for a month.Copy !req
328. Why is Japan so poor?Copy !req
329. Jiro, do you know what we're paying
the Germans for their technology?Copy !req
330. Enough to feed every kid in Japan,
with sponge cake for dessert.Copy !req
331. Still, I plan to make the most
of this opportunity.Copy !req
332. They're sending you too?Copy !req
333. They told me today.Copy !req
334. Really? That's great news.Copy !req
335. Poor countries want airplanes.Copy !req
336. So they pay us a lot
to design them. It's ironic.Copy !req
337. I'm leaving for Tokyo tomorrow.
Getting married.Copy !req
338. Married?Copy !req
339. To work hard at the office,
you need a family at home.Copy !req
340. More irony.Copy !req
341. Tight-fisted Germans.
They're hardly showing us anything.Copy !req
342. I don't see any oxen.Copy !req
343. The airstrip's
next to the plant.Copy !req
344. Everything's so big.Copy !req
345. It's the G-38.
Is this what we're buying?Copy !req
346. For conversion to a bomber.
It's top secret.Copy !req
347. Who's the Army planning
to bomb with this thing?Copy !req
348. America, probably.
Not that they could.Copy !req
349. Still, it's quite something.Copy !req
350. Amazing.Copy !req
351. Passengers can sit in the wings.
This would be wasted as a bomber.Copy !req
352. Who cares? We need
their all-metal airframe technology.Copy !req
353. You're kidding.
We can't go inside?Copy !req
354. Beautiful.Copy !req
355. Stop it.
Take your hands off him.Copy !req
356. Is this how Germans
treat their guests?Copy !req
357. You Japanese copy everything.
This technology belongs to Germany.Copy !req
358. Oh, come on. Japan has
lots of planes like this.Copy !req
359. Honjo, let it go.Copy !req
360. We have a license
to your technology.Copy !req
361. We signed an agreement.
We have the right to be here.Copy !req
362. Your bosses never said
we couldn't inspect this airplane.Copy !req
363. I'm sure you're only
trying to do your job...Copy !req
364. but we won't tolerate this treatment.
The agreement is between equals.Copy !req
365. Our orders were not to let
you Japanese wander around.Copy !req
366. That's Dr. Junkers.Copy !req
367. What an engineer.Copy !req
368. You can go inside.
Dr. Junkers has agreed.Copy !req
369. I'm surprised we got a demonstration.Copy !req
370. There's more vibration
than I expected.Copy !req
371. Our bosses are getting giddy.Copy !req
372. Let the Army officers sit here.Copy !req
373. Just a moment.Copy !req
374. This is truly a stupendous aircraft.Copy !req
375. Look, a corridor through the wing.Copy !req
376. This is amazing.Copy !req
377. It's like being inside a power plant.Copy !req
378. Guten tag.
Dr. Junkers gave us permission.Copy !req
379. Please show us your work station.Copy !req
380. This is the flight engineer's station.Copy !req
381. This aircraft is marvelous.Copy !req
382. Japanese, do not go further.Copy !req
383. Of course, my friend.Copy !req
384. - This is incredible.
- Yes, it's fantastic.Copy !req
385. A triumph of
German industrial technology.Copy !req
386. Dr. Junkers is my hero,
but his company is sneaky.Copy !req
387. Got a cigarette, Jiro?Copy !req
388. Jiro!Copy !req
389. A cigarette.Copy !req
390. No. We're out.Copy !req
391. It looks cold outside,
but this room is cozy.Copy !req
392. I thought Germans used fireplaces.Copy !req
393. Junkers makes radiators too.
This almost looks like that plane.Copy !req
394. It's beautiful.Copy !req
395. And our technology is primitive.
That's what you mean, right?Copy !req
396. You think we'll never figure out
all-metal construction on our own?Copy !req
397. We can't learn anything from this.Copy !req
398. These are just pretty equations.Copy !req
399. "This technology belongs to Germany."Copy !req
400. Maybe we don't even
need their technology.Copy !req
401. Wood and canvas
could be as good as metal.Copy !req
402. Then we'll never make it.
We're already 20 years behind.Copy !req
403. Let's take a walk.Copy !req
404. My brain is boiling.Copy !req
405. We're Achilles, chasing a tortoise
with a twenty-year lead.Copy !req
406. If we close the gap
in five years...Copy !req
407. he'll be five more years
down the road.Copy !req
408. We'll always be chasing him.Copy !req
409. Someday we'll overtake him
and move ahead.Copy !req
410. I wonder if we
can be the tortoise.Copy !req
411. What?Copy !req
412. Listen to that.Copy !req
413. Schubert's "Winter Journey".
It's perfect for us.Copy !req
414. - What was that about?
- We saw him in the hangar.Copy !req
415. Jiro?Copy !req
416. I'm done. Go have a bath.Copy !req
417. Dead to the world...Copy !req
418. with a face like he's carrying
the future of Japanese aviation.Copy !req
419. There's a telegram from headquarters.Copy !req
420. - Come in.
- Not necessary.Copy !req
421. Some of us are returning immediately.
You're staying behind.Copy !req
422. Jiro will continue west
and return to Japan.Copy !req
423. - West?
- They want him to see the world.Copy !req
424. All by himself?Copy !req
425. Mr. Caproni.Copy !req
426. Is the wind still rising?Copy !req
427. Yes, it is.Copy !req
428. Then I invite you to join me
on my final flight. Come.Copy !req
429. You're retiring?Copy !req
430. It's a big jump.Copy !req
431. Jump!Copy !req
432. Hurry. We're taking off.Copy !req
433. There's a hatch under the fuselage.Copy !req
434. Hurry!Copy !req
435. Let me through.Copy !req
436. Up here!Copy !req
437. - Full power!
- Fly! Fly!Copy !req
438. My workmen's families and relatives.
Practically the whole village.Copy !req
439. We're taking a private jaunt...Copy !req
440. before we deliver this bomber
to the Air Force.Copy !req
441. - What do you think?
- It's incredible.Copy !req
442. It's like a building
out of ancient Rome.Copy !req
443. This plane is too large
to be used for war...Copy !req
444. but the Air Force
likes everything big.Copy !req
445. Japan is poor and backward.Copy !req
446. We could never build
something like this.Copy !req
447. The important thing
for an engineer is inspiration.Copy !req
448. Inspiration unlocks the future.
Technology will catch up.Copy !req
449. My wife and family.Copy !req
450. We Italians are also poor.
Too many mouths to feed.Copy !req
451. Hey, settle down.
The bottom will fall out.Copy !req
452. Come.Copy !req
453. Be careful. This may be a dream,
but you can still lose your head.Copy !req
454. Which would you choose, a world with
pyramids or one without them?Copy !req
455. Pyramids?Copy !req
456. Humanity dreams of flight,
but the dream is cursed.Copy !req
457. Aircraft are destined to become
tools for slaughter and destruction.Copy !req
458. I know.Copy !req
459. But still, I chose a world
with pyramids in it.Copy !req
460. Which world will you choose?Copy !req
461. I want to create beautiful airplanes.Copy !req
462. Like that?Copy !req
463. Very graceful.Copy !req
464. I have a long way to go.
I don't even have the engine yet.Copy !req
465. Bravo! A beautiful dream.Copy !req
466. I'm retiring.
This is my last design.Copy !req
467. Artists are only creative
for ten years.Copy !req
468. We engineers are no different.Copy !req
469. Live your ten years to the full.Copy !req
470. Jiro, we need to talk.Copy !req
471. - I've got a meeting.
- Cancel it.Copy !req
472. - This is a tall order.
- They're always tall.Copy !req
473. How long have you
been with us, Jiro?Copy !req
474. Jiro?Copy !req
475. - How long?
- Five years.Copy !req
476. You should be ready, then.
We want you to lead the project.Copy !req
477. It's the Navy's design competition
for 1932. A carrier-based fighter.Copy !req
478. A plum assignment.Copy !req
479. Well, Jiro?Copy !req
480. What do you think?Copy !req
481. Leave it to me.Copy !req
482. Good.Copy !req
483. I'd like Honjo on the team.Copy !req
484. Bad idea.Copy !req
485. You'd end up competing.
Friendship's more important.Copy !req
486. Relax and finish your coffee.Copy !req
487. Check, please.Copy !req
488. We've got other plans for Honjo.Copy !req
489. Damn these Japanese engines!Copy !req
490. And damn this short flight deck.Copy !req
491. Fresh uniforms!Copy !req
492. Oh, thanks.Copy !req
493. Thanks for your help.Copy !req
494. Those jerseys suit you.Copy !req
495. Close the flight deck!Copy !req
496. Stop!Copy !req
497. We did it!Copy !req
498. She's airborne!Copy !req
499. Father!Copy !req
500. Bravo! Nice catch.Copy !req
501. That was kind of you.
Are you all right?Copy !req
502. I'm fine. Here you are.Copy !req
503. Thank you.
It belongs to the hotel.Copy !req
504. Well, goodbye.Copy !req
505. Father, I'm afraid
I was rude to that man.Copy !req
506. Don't worry.
He's staying at our hotel.Copy !req
507. You'll have a chance
to say thank you.Copy !req
508. What is it?Copy !req
509. Nothing. Just that man
who caught the parasol.Copy !req
510. He seems to be here by himself.Copy !req
511. I'm sorry. I'd better go.Copy !req
512. No, please stay.
I was giving thanks to the spring.Copy !req
513. I asked it
to bring you here, to me.Copy !req
514. You haven't changed at all.
You're just like you were then.Copy !req
515. We were so grateful
for your help after the earthquake.Copy !req
516. I wanted to see you
again and thank you.Copy !req
517. Oh, now I remember.Copy !req
518. My name is Nahoko Satomi.Copy !req
519. Jiro Horikoshi.Copy !req
520. Are you all right?Copy !req
521. I'm fine.Copy !req
522. Kinu got married two days after
she dropped off your shirt.Copy !req
523. She cried for joy
when we found you.Copy !req
524. You were our knight
in shining armor.Copy !req
525. Your knight?Copy !req
526. You were like a knight on a
white horse that day.Copy !req
527. This umbrella sure does leak.Copy !req
528. It's all right.Copy !req
529. I've got to tell Kinu.Copy !req
530. She just had her second child.Copy !req
531. It's such a cute baby.Copy !req
532. Your painting is all wet.Copy !req
533. Yes. I'll keep it this way
in honor of today.Copy !req
534. Look, it's clearing up.Copy !req
535. The rain stopped here.Copy !req
536. Oh, look at that.Copy !req
537. I'd almost forgotten
what rainbows look like.Copy !req
538. Life is wonderful, isn't it?Copy !req
539. We'd better go.
Father's probably worried sick.Copy !req
540. There's my father.Copy !req
541. Father!Copy !req
542. Come, I'll introduce you.Copy !req
543. You're soaking wet.Copy !req
544. Don't worry, Father. I'm fine.
Mr. Horikoshi saved me again.Copy !req
545. Jiro Horikoshi.Copy !req
546. Satomi. I'm afraid my daughter has
caused you trouble again.Copy !req
547. May I sit here?Copy !req
548. Certainly.Copy !req
549. German tobacco. Last one. Too bad.Copy !req
550. I know how you feel.
The same thing happened to me.Copy !req
551. You visit Germany, yes? To Dessau.Copy !req
552. You must be Sherlock Holmes.Copy !req
553. You are an engineer.Copy !req
554. You read German magazines.
Magazines about airplanes.Copy !req
555. All Japanese engineers visit Dessau.Copy !req
556. You're exactly right.Copy !req
557. - Dr. Junkers is in trouble.
- What kind of trouble?Copy !req
558. He fights the government.
He will blow up.Copy !req
559. Mr. Hitler's government?Copy !req
560. The Nazis are a gang of hoodlums.Copy !req
561. This is a good place.Copy !req
562. No mosquitoes.
Not hot. Good watercress.Copy !req
563. A good place to forget bad things.Copy !req
564. Cigarette? I'm afraid they're Japanese.Copy !req
565. Thank you.Copy !req
566. It is a nice night.
Hier ist der Zauberberg.Copy !req
567. "The Magic Mountain"
by Thomas Mann?Copy !req
568. A good place for forgetting.Copy !req
569. Make a war in China. Forget it.Copy !req
570. Make a puppet state
in Manchuria. Forget it.Copy !req
571. Quit the League of Nations. Forget it.Copy !req
572. Make the world your enemy. Forget it.Copy !req
573. Japan will blow up.Copy !req
574. Germany will blow up too.Copy !req
575. - Will Germany go to war again?
- Yes. They must be stopped.Copy !req
576. I'm sorry to keep you
waiting so long.Copy !req
577. Nahoko has a fever.Copy !req
578. I'm afraid we'll have to
cancel our dinner plans.Copy !req
579. I'm sorry. Please tell her
I hope she feels better.Copy !req
580. I must go.
The doctor will be here soon.Copy !req
581. "Who has seen the wind?"Copy !req
582. "Neither I nor you."Copy !req
583. "But when the leaves hang trembling,
the wind is passing through."Copy !req
584. Let the wind carry...Copy !req
585. these wings to you.Copy !req
586. Jiro?Copy !req
587. Nahoko!Copy !req
588. Be careful!Copy !req
589. Nice catch.Copy !req
590. Bravo!Copy !req
591. Is the young lady feeling better?Copy !req
592. Yes, she's much better.Copy !req
593. Congratulations.Copy !req
594. This is the magic mountain.
It cures everyone.Copy !req
595. I think you're right.Copy !req
596. At first, this young man
was very gloomy.Copy !req
597. Now he is very happy.Copy !req
598. He has fallen in love.Copy !req
599. That's true.Copy !req
600. Summer love is soon forgotten.Copy !req
601. You will go down the mountain.
You will forget what happened here.Copy !req
602. Not me.Copy !req
603. This person you're talking about
wouldn't be my daughter, would it?Copy !req
604. Yes, it's Nahoko.Copy !req
605. Please give us your permission.Copy !req
606. But...Copy !req
607. Father!Copy !req
608. I would like to accept.Copy !req
609. What a beauty.Copy !req
610. But first, there's something
I have to tell you.Copy !req
611. Yes?Copy !req
612. Two years ago,
my mother died of tuberculosis.Copy !req
613. I contracted it too.Copy !req
614. I've loved you since
that day you rescued my hat.Copy !req
615. I've loved you since the wind
brought you to me.Copy !req
616. Please marry me.Copy !req
617. I will.Copy !req
618. But I want to get well first.
Can you wait for me?Copy !req
619. Even if it takes
a hundred years.Copy !req
620. Congratulations.Copy !req
621. He is a nice young man.
Your daughter is wonderful.Copy !req
622. This is a good summer.Copy !req
623. - Jiro, over here!
- Honjo!Copy !req
624. - When did you get back?
- Two days ago.Copy !req
625. Hot, isn't it?Copy !req
626. Come take a look.Copy !req
627. She's beautiful.Copy !req
628. Good clean lines.Copy !req
629. It's a radical design.
They gave me free rein.Copy !req
630. But we won't know
until she flies.Copy !req
631. She'll fly.
I feel the wind rising.Copy !req
632. You're the Japanese Achilles.
You've closed the gap.Copy !req
633. My plane was just a tin duckling.Copy !req
634. I have an idea for you.Copy !req
635. I haven't tried it yet.Copy !req
636. Use flathead screws
on the access hatches.Copy !req
637. They'll reduce drag.Copy !req
638. Maintenance will be easy
with a hinge on one side.Copy !req
639. A spring about this stiff
should be fine.Copy !req
640. That's a great idea,
like Columbus and his egg.Copy !req
641. You should use it.Copy !req
642. Thanks, but not this time.Copy !req
643. I'll keep the plans.Copy !req
644. After you use it,
I'll use it too.Copy !req
645. Okay.Copy !req
646. Hurry up, I'll be waiting.Copy !req
647. Jiro! Are you here?Copy !req
648. Jiro, it's Mr. Kurokawa.Copy !req
649. It's an emergency.Copy !req
650. See you.Copy !req
651. Visit the house next time.Copy !req
652. Jiro, you pedal.Copy !req
653. The Special Police
are looking for you.Copy !req
654. The thought crime boys.Copy !req
655. Why me?Copy !req
656. I told them you were
away on business.Copy !req
657. Pretending to leave?
We won't fall for that.Copy !req
658. You'd better work here.
We'll bring your things.Copy !req
659. What's going on?
Why are they after me?Copy !req
660. They arrested some of my friends.
None of them understood why.Copy !req
661. Come in.Copy !req
662. Here's your stuff.Copy !req
663. Sorry for the bother.Copy !req
664. Need anything else?Copy !req
665. - Just leave it and go.
- Jiro, it's here!Copy !req
666. The prototype flange.Copy !req
667. It looks great.Copy !req
668. Wish we'd had it last year.Copy !req
669. Jiro, what do you think?Copy !req
670. Our next plane will be
a full-grown duck, not a duckling.Copy !req
671. A full metal duck.Copy !req
672. How about it, Mr. Kurokawa?Copy !req
673. Extruded aluminum alloy.
Very light. What a luxury.Copy !req
674. All right, back to work.Copy !req
675. - The coast looks clear.
- Okay, Jiro.Copy !req
676. Better lie low for a few days.Copy !req
677. We'll smooth things over.Copy !req
678. I'll put you up.Copy !req
679. Let me stop by my apartment.
I'm expecting a letter.Copy !req
680. Is it something sensitive?Copy !req
681. Yes, very sensitive.Copy !req
682. The police will be opening your mail.Copy !req
683. It's from my fiancée.Copy !req
684. Such things shouldn't happen
in a modern country.Copy !req
685. You're engaged?Copy !req
686. - Jiro's human after all.
- Splendid.Copy !req
687. You think Japan's a modern country?Copy !req
688. It's not funny.Copy !req
689. Of course it's not funny.
The police are waiting for you.Copy !req
690. Let them read your love letters.Copy !req
691. The Navy's next design
competition is in your hands.Copy !req
692. The company will protect you.
That is, as long as you're useful.Copy !req
693. Just keep your mind on work.Copy !req
694. I miss you terribly.
And "Mr. Castorp" left so suddenly.Copy !req
695. Why are they looking for him?Copy !req
696. I pray that he managed to
leave Japan safely.Copy !req
697. Jiro, telephone for you.Copy !req
698. Coming.Copy !req
699. - The telephone is there.
- Thank you.Copy !req
700. - Hello?
- Jiro? You have a telegram.Copy !req
701. What?Copy !req
702. Your landlord brought it.
It came two days ago.Copy !req
703. Please read it.Copy !req
704. Are you sure?Copy !req
705. "Nahoko... has had
a lung... hemorrhage."Copy !req
706. "Please come at once.
Satomi"Copy !req
707. Hello? Are you there?Copy !req
708. I understand. Thank you.Copy !req
709. Wait, hold on!Copy !req
710. What is it?Copy !req
711. What's the fastest way
to get to Tokyo?Copy !req
712. To Tokyo?Copy !req
713. I have to be there
as soon as possible.Copy !req
714. Let me see.Copy !req
715. If you take the noon bus,
you can catch the express.Copy !req
716. I'll send someone
to hold the bus for you.Copy !req
717. Jiya!Copy !req
718. Darling!Copy !req
719. I wish I could've
come sooner.Copy !req
720. You'll catch it.Copy !req
721. You're beautiful.Copy !req
722. I love you.Copy !req
723. Jiro? Through the garden?Copy !req
724. Come in.Copy !req
725. Father, Jiro came to see me.Copy !req
726. But he has to leave right away.Copy !req
727. - Next time I'll use the front door.
- Use the garden, it's more fun.Copy !req
728. All right, I will.Copy !req
729. Take care, darling.Copy !req
730. You too.Copy !req
731. Goodbye.Copy !req
732. I'll see you out.Copy !req
733. The last train?
You'd better hurry.Copy !req
734. Is it that serious?
I wish I could look after her.Copy !req
735. The way to do that is
to focus on your work.Copy !req
736. Now you'd better go.Copy !req
737. He's gone.Copy !req
738. Are you crying, dear?Copy !req
739. I'm going to the sanatorium
the doctor recommended.Copy !req
740. But it's so lonely.
You'll be all by yourself.Copy !req
741. I want to get better.Copy !req
742. I want a life with Jiro.Copy !req
743. You're just in time.
The board is waiting.Copy !req
744. So, are you ready?Copy !req
745. I'll do my best.Copy !req
746. Now the Navy.
They're the client.Copy !req
747. I'll do my best.Copy !req
748. - You weren't even listening.
- Right.Copy !req
749. So I gave up on that idea.Copy !req
750. - Everyone's here rather late.
- Jiro's holding a design seminar.Copy !req
751. The next design uses
all the latest technology.Copy !req
752. - Take a look.
- Retractable undercarriage!Copy !req
753. We'll need it for 270 knots.Copy !req
754. 270 knots?
That's 500 kilometers an hour!Copy !req
755. I thought the Navy
requested 220 knots.Copy !req
756. We're designing for the future.Copy !req
757. Wing loading is 120 kilos
per square meter.Copy !req
758. We'll minimize drag
and push the limits of technology.Copy !req
759. She'll have split flaps
and leading edge slats.Copy !req
760. We can do it!Copy !req
761. When do we start?Copy !req
762. But then weight becomes a problem.Copy !req
763. If we leave out the guns,
we should be okay.Copy !req
764. I decided to set
this idea aside for now.Copy !req
765. This is delightful.
Lucid and logical.Copy !req
766. Almost had it.Copy !req
767. Our engines are underpowered.Copy !req
768. To compensate, we need
a light, strong structure.Copy !req
769. We'll cut excess weight
and minimize drag with a smooth skin.Copy !req
770. We're going to build
an all-metal fighter...Copy !req
771. like nothing the world's ever seen.Copy !req
772. I have a question!Copy !req
773. Mr. Hirayama, please.Copy !req
774. Mr. Hirayama is our production engineer.Copy !req
775. Thank you.Copy !req
776. He's going to tell us
about the new rivets.Copy !req
777. It's technically possible to build
strong structures with flush rivets.Copy !req
778. What's he talking about?Copy !req
779. A way to cut drag.Copy !req
780. We're going to skin
the whole aircraft with flush rivets.Copy !req
781. - Question!
- I have a question!Copy !req
782. I must say, that was interesting.Copy !req
783. It was inspiring.Copy !req
784. Today's letter, Miss Satomi.Copy !req
785. Thank you.Copy !req
786. Phone call, Chief.Copy !req
787. - I'll call back.
- I think it's an emergency.Copy !req
788. Hello? Mr. Satomi?Copy !req
789. What?Copy !req
790. Jiro! Jiro!Copy !req
791. Thank goodness.
I worried I wouldn't find you.Copy !req
792. I'm here now. Can you walk?Copy !req
793. Let's go.Copy !req
794. I just had to see you.
I should go right back.Copy !req
795. Don't go.Copy !req
796. We should be together.Copy !req
797. - What a charming companion.
- My name is Nahoko.Copy !req
798. - So you're Nahoko.
- Jiro, is that you?Copy !req
799. We've come to you
with a request.Copy !req
800. Why not, dear? It'll be fine.Copy !req
801. We've got plenty of room...Copy !req
802. but I can hardly approve of
an unmarried couple living together.Copy !req
803. We'll get married right away.Copy !req
804. Mr. Kurokawa, Mrs. Kurokawa,
please be our witnesses.Copy !req
805. Here? Tonight?Copy !req
806. It sounds lovely, dear.Copy !req
807. Nahoko was very brave
to leave the sanatorium.Copy !req
808. My father's given his permission.
I've already told the doctor.Copy !req
809. Please help us.Copy !req
810. The bride and I have
preparations to make.Copy !req
811. Come with me, Nahoko.Copy !req
812. Don't worry, he's always like that.Copy !req
813. If you care about her,
you'll send her back immediately.Copy !req
814. I can't do that.
I'd have to give up my work.Copy !req
815. Is that your heart
or your ego talking?Copy !req
816. We don't have much time.
We've made our decision.Copy !req
817. I see.Copy !req
818. All right.
We'll have a real ceremony!Copy !req
819. Here they come.Copy !req
820. She's coming!Copy !req
821. Hear me! This lovely maiden
has traveled far to join her beloved.Copy !req
822. She's given up everything
in the world for him. What say you?Copy !req
823. Hear me! This man is
an insensitive simpleton...Copy !req
824. without a home
of his own.Copy !req
825. If that's... uh, okay with you,
please come in.Copy !req
826. Then they shall exchange
the marriage vows.Copy !req
827. You look beautiful.Copy !req
828. Mr. And Mrs. Kurokawa.Copy !req
829. No words can express
our gratitude for your kindness.Copy !req
830. We will never forget our debt to you.Copy !req
831. Come now, we're delighted that
Jiro's found such a wonderful partner.Copy !req
832. Aren't we, dear?Copy !req
833. Of course. This is wonderful.
You're both very courageous.Copy !req
834. You must be tired.Copy !req
835. I feel like I'm dreaming.
The room is spinning.Copy !req
836. Better get some rest.Copy !req
837. Come here.Copy !req
838. But your condition...Copy !req
839. Come.Copy !req
840. Do you always
get home this late?Copy !req
841. Kayo, I completely forgot.Copy !req
842. You're so insensitive.Copy !req
843. Congratulations on becoming a doctor.Copy !req
844. Congratulations on your marriage.Copy !req
845. I came on behalf of the family
to thank the Kurokawas.Copy !req
846. Are they still up?Copy !req
847. They've gone to bed.Copy !req
848. - Did you meet Nahoko?
- Yes.Copy !req
849. What are you going to do?
She's alone in that room all day.Copy !req
850. Her condition is
much worse than you think.Copy !req
851. I'm an intern.
I know something about this.Copy !req
852. Did you notice she uses rouge
every morning so you won't worry?Copy !req
853. I really like Nahoko.
She's such a good person.Copy !req
854. How can you do this to her?Copy !req
855. Does she really have to stay here?Copy !req
856. Yes.Copy !req
857. Each day is very precious to us now.Copy !req
858. Get some rest.
I'm glad you came to visit.Copy !req
859. I'm home.Copy !req
860. - I was waiting.
- You should sleep.Copy !req
861. - Should you be up?
- Kayo came today.Copy !req
862. We're already best friends.Copy !req
863. She's like the sun,
with such a bright future.Copy !req
864. She said next time,
she'll come as my doctor.Copy !req
865. And your mother made me
a chemise and a nightgown.Copy !req
866. Look, they're so warm.Copy !req
867. Too bright?Copy !req
868. It's all right.Copy !req
869. I have to finish
the design by tomorrow.Copy !req
870. For your mackerel bones?Copy !req
871. You remembered.Copy !req
872. I think it could
be a little lighter.Copy !req
873. Come a little closer.Copy !req
874. Give me your hand.Copy !req
875. I like to look at you
while you work.Copy !req
876. In a one-handed slide rule contest,
I'd win first prize for sure.Copy !req
877. I think I can make each rib
half an ounce lighter.Copy !req
878. Really? That's good.Copy !req
879. Thirty ribs makes about a pound.Copy !req
880. That's too much.Copy !req
881. Half a pound is enough for two.Copy !req
882. I could eat a pound
of mackerel by myself.Copy !req
883. I'll keep holding your hand.
You should sleep.Copy !req
884. - You won't let go?
- No, I won't.Copy !req
885. I need a cigarette.
Can I let go for a minute?Copy !req
886. No. Smoke it here.Copy !req
887. - It's not good for you.
- I don't care.Copy !req
888. Hey, Honjo.Copy !req
889. Can I take a look?Copy !req
890. - Sure. How's your bomber?
- Coming along fine.Copy !req
891. This is avant garde.
You went all the way.Copy !req
892. So this is flush riveting.Copy !req
893. Feels pretty rough.Copy !req
894. We're still learning the technique.Copy !req
895. You've left the Germans behind.
I'm still stuck with them.Copy !req
896. This design is you,
right down to the mackerel bones.Copy !req
897. Jiro, let me use flush rivets too.
And your spring-loaded hatches.Copy !req
898. Sure. Why not?Copy !req
899. A redesign?Copy !req
900. Yeah, but they're only letting me
modify the fuselage.Copy !req
901. And leave the wings alone?Copy !req
902. That's where the fuel tanks are.
One hit, and boom.Copy !req
903. To save weight, we're not even
shielding the fuel tanks.Copy !req
904. It's Japan's first advanced bomber.
The Navy's over the moon.Copy !req
905. She's got to fly 3,000 kilometers
with a big payload.Copy !req
906. More horsepower alone won't be enough.Copy !req
907. Who are they going to fight?Copy !req
908. China. Russia. Britain.
The Netherlands. America.Copy !req
909. Japan will blow up.Copy !req
910. We're not arms merchants.
We just want to build good aircraft.Copy !req
911. You're right.Copy !req
912. See you. Get some sleep.Copy !req
913. Sure. You too.Copy !req
914. I'm leaving now.Copy !req
915. Good night.Copy !req
916. Night.Copy !req
917. Welcome home.Copy !req
918. It's finished.
Now we'll see how she flies.Copy !req
919. Congratulations.
You worked so hard.Copy !req
920. She's on her way to the field.Copy !req
921. I'll probably spend
a few nights there.Copy !req
922. You must be tired.Copy !req
923. A little.Copy !req
924. I'm sure it will fly beautifully.Copy !req
925. Yes, she'll fly.Copy !req
926. I couldn't have done it without you.Copy !req
927. I love you, Jiro.Copy !req
928. Nahoko...Copy !req
929. I'm off.Copy !req
930. Good luck.Copy !req
931. Why, Nahoko. You're up.Copy !req
932. I'm feeling much better today.
I'm going for a walk.Copy !req
933. Just be careful
not to tire yourself.Copy !req
934. The room's still a mess.
I'll straighten up when I get back.Copy !req
935. All right. Enjoy yourself.Copy !req
936. Kayo's coming today.
That will be nice.Copy !req
937. Yes. I'll be back soon.Copy !req
938. Please come in.Copy !req
939. Oh, no.Copy !req
940. Look, she left letters!
One of them's for me.Copy !req
941. She's going to the sanatorium!
I'll bring her back.Copy !req
942. No! Let her go.Copy !req
943. We shouldn't do anything
until her train leaves.Copy !req
944. She wants him
to remember her as she was.Copy !req
945. This is wonderful.
Just think, that's one of ours.Copy !req
946. How's her speed?Copy !req
947. Sorry, the numbers are too high.
We're checking them again.Copy !req
948. How fast?Copy !req
949. - 240 knots.
- Two forty!Copy !req
950. - Fantastic!
- What a fighter.Copy !req
951. Hey, Jiro.Copy !req
952. Jiro!Copy !req
953. She flies like a dream.
Thank you.Copy !req

960. Those ten years in the sun,
did you live them to the full?Copy !req
961. Yes. Things fell apart
toward the end, though.Copy !req
962. That's what it means to lose a war.Copy !req
963. There's your Zero fighter.Copy !req
964. Beautiful. A masterful design.Copy !req
965. Not a single plane returned.Copy !req
966. There was nothing
to come back to.Copy !req
967. Airplanes are beautiful dreams.
Cursed dreams...Copy !req
968. waiting for the sky
to swallow them up.Copy !req
969. Someone is waiting for you.Copy !req
970. Nahoko...Copy !req
971. She's been waiting here
for a long time.Copy !req
972. Darling, you must live.Copy !req
973. You must live...Copy !req
974. She is gone.Copy !req
975. She was beautiful, like the wind.Copy !req
976. Thank you.Copy !req
977. You must live.Copy !req
978. First, shall we drop by my house?
I have some excellent wine.Copy !req
