4. An informant led officers of the Muerto County Sheriff department to a cemetery

5. just outside the small rural Texas community of Newt early this morning.

6. Officers there discovered what appeared to be a grisly work of art:

7. the remains of a badly decomposed body wired to a large monument.

8. A second body was found in a ditch near the perimeter of the cemetery.

9. Subsequent investigation has revealed at least a dozen empty crypts

10. and it's feared more will turn up as the probe continues.

11. Deputies report that in some instances

12. only parts of a corpse had been removed,

13. the head or in some cases the extremities removed,

14. the remainder of the corpse left intact.

15. Evidence indicates the robberies have occurred over a period of time.

16. Sheriff Jesus Maldonado refused to give details of the ghoulish case

17. and said only that he did have strong evidence

18. linking the crime to elements outside the state.

19. Area residents have reportedly converged on the cemetery,

20. fearing the remains of relatives have been removed.

21. No suspects are in custody as the investigation at the scene continues.
