The Sheik (2014)

1. Iranian national ethos.

2. Wrestling was a national obsession.

3. Now Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran, weds Farah Diba

4. During the 1940s, early 50s,

5. ah, he was in a very peculiar position

6. because of the conflict, international conflict over oil.

7. He was under a lot of pressure and he was identified with... as an enlightened monarch,

8. often repressive.

9. In the 1950s and 60s,

10. there were two fundamental role models.

11. One, in Iran, for the Iranians,

12. was Gholamreza Takhti

13. and the other one was Muhammad Ali.

14. Gholamreza Takhti was the icon for lot of Iranians.

15. He really was the person, who for the first time, in sports,

16. put Iran on the map.

17. Hossein Vaziri, the Sheik, had trained with Takhti,

18. they were hanging around in the same circles.

19. So, Takhti was a role model for him.

20. The medals that Takhti won internationally,

21. now Vaziri could win.

22. And he was well placed actually, to be the new Takhti.

23. To have a great deal of international success.

24. People came to believe that if you are internationally recognized,

25. if you are very successful, you are going to be eliminated.

26. The fact that the world champion commit suicide, was unacceptable.

27. That became the ground for believable conspiracies.

28. He got off Iran in a hurry, uh, for fear of his own life.

29. And then he ends up in Minnesota of all places,

30. as an assistant coach of the United States' Olympic team.

31. I always felt that was a little ironic.

32. Ladies and gentlemen, here he is Vern Gagne.

33. The Iron Sheik starts off training with Verne Gagne.

34. And he picks out real athletes. He's not looking for gimmick guys.

35. He's looking for pure wrestlers.

36. Verne was old school guy that try to run you off,

37. And so, it was a unique way of recruiting but it was a tough, tough class.

38. But you know, what I understand, the guys that were there,

39. I don't think Khosrow had any issues physically because he was just a machine.

40. And here was a guy that was smaller in stature, than lot of his contemporaries.

41. But ten times as tough.

42. He had the real life ability to actually hurt anybody e really wanted to,

43. and do anything he wanted to do to them at any given time.

44. He could beat probably 99% of the guys in the business.

45. But he just didn't have the heart, he wasn't a bully.

46. trim, muscular, and he wears a singlet, with Olympic rings on it

47. because he had been an assisting coach on the US Olympic team.

48. So, essentially he starts his career as an all-American.

49. I met my husband at University of Minnesota.

50. back in 1975.

51. And I immediately fell in love with him, the moment I saw him.

52. 180 pounds, washboard stomach,

53. just absolutely drop dead gorgeous.

54. The hottest thing on two feet.

55. and he worked everyday of the week.

56. So, we could never get a weekend off to get married.

57. So, we were married on a Saturday night,

58. and my husband had gone

59. to the Minneapolis Auditorium and wrestled that afternoon.

60. What an air ball drop!

61. He says USA and put the pooch right to it.

62. 1976, the Sheik once again is an assistant coach for the US Olympic team.

63. And Verne Gagne, the AWA promoter is there scouring future talent,

64. And Mary Gagne, Verne's wife is there and she's asking Khosrow,

65. "Are you happy with your role in professional wrestling?"

66. He's like, "Well, I kind of like to be little more prominent."

67. My dad was wrestling with Sheik.

68. He was a striking guy with an unforgettable look.

69. My mom had become friends with Sheik's wife, Caryl

70. and she had come over to the house many times.

71. Even had the great displeasure of baby siting me on a few occasions.

72. Hated it, hated it, hated the mustache,

73. hated the shaving the head to become the Iron Sheik.

74. He loves the bad guy, I mean, that was tailor made for him.

75. Hey, you people, shut up.

76. Let me, I'll show that punk, who the real wrestler is.

77. And it gets in his mind to transform himself,

78. and play off of the core Islamaphobia perhaps

79. that many Americans unfortunately carry.

80. Wrestling is funny. whatever is going in the world,

81. is magnified 100 times immensely.

82. On November 4th, Iranian students seize the US embassy and 63 hostages.

83. 1979, Jimmy Carter is our president.

84. I think Jimmy Carter is a fundamentally decent human being,

85. but not a very tough president.

86. As a result, the Ayatollahs are able to hold a group of Americans hostage

87. and parade them on television every night.

88. Iron Sheik from Iran, from Tehran, Iran, against Mr. USA, Tony Atlas.

89. Every promoter wants an Iranian villain.

90. And there is one. Khosrow Vaziri, wrestled for the nation of Iran.

91. Khosrow Vaziri speaks Parsi.

92. Everybody call USA, USA.

93. And I am sick and tired of you and USA.

94. In the crazy world of professional wrestling,

95. that belongs to Iron Sheik, Iron Sheik is the only man...

96. You know, at that time I remember watching him,

97. he did this brilliant interview with Classy Freddie Blassie as his manager.

98. And he goes into,

99. "Ayatollah tell me Sheik. Bring back world championship belt."

100. Automatically you think that's not put on, that's a legit accent.

101. He's the real deal.

102. and fighting outside the ring...

103. When the Iranian hostage crisis hits, and there's genuine heat,

104. between the United States and Iran, the Iron Sheik character ignites.

105. The Iron Sheik is just Pearl Harboured.

106. He presses one, about the same type of attack culminating in the embassy.

107. Without warning, they struck, a defenseless person at the time...

108. It was a time in wrestling where a lot of people still believed

109. that what they saw was real, or reality based.

110. Wrestlers will tell you, there's good heat and bad heat.

111. Good heat as Freddie Blassie explained to me, is when the fans boo loudly.

112. Bad heat is when they want to kill you.

113. The Iron Shiek had both.

114. He embraced being a heel.

115. It takes a certain kind of DNA and a certain kind of guy,

116. to embrace being a bad guy, to embrace the fact that you're gonna go out there,

117. and you're gonna get hated, you are gonna get booed.

118. Kill him! Kill him!

119. I never had heat like this he got.

120. This is what we call, change the channel heat.

121. There's heat, like 'Yes, I wanna pay, I wanna see this guy,

122. And Sheik had the right heat.

123. You didn't change the channel when the Iron Sheik was on.

124. Back in the day when he was just getting this thing rolling, the audience was very violent.

125. Just shut up! Shut your bloody mouth!

126. This guy was real.

127. This guy, he'd push through it, he got the people mad.

128. And his arrogance shown through too.

129. Oh, shut up, you! Shut your bloody mouth!

130. He talked to people, you know, he talked down to people.

131. He's better than they are. That was the whole thing, man.

132. "You, arrogant son of a bitch." You know, the fellow Americans.

133. Deep down, I think he believed that too. "Americans suck!"

134. Well, I understand that. Jealously is a bitch.

135. There you see Jerry Usher, the referee kicking it in the dumpster.

136. If you are going to describe good and bad,

137. from an American's viewpoint, you have the red, white and blue all American,

138. and you are going to have a foreign menace.

139. So, you have the Sheik who embodies everything

140. that we as Americans hate.

141. And he exploited it.

142. Then he got in your face and he told you,

143. why you were weak and why as an Iranian, he could do everything.

144. So, he was a perfect bad guy.

145. Sheik made everybody humble.

146. 'Cause of a man like this, this is why the Iranians,

147. should not have a nuclear bomb.

148. He trained me when I was 16 years old.

149. At my dad's dungeon, taught me at my dad's house.

150. One of the best we got, one of my heroes.

151. Where the Sheik at?

152. Sheik is working out, he's working out with his gloves.

153. So, Vince walks over and says, "Sheik." "Yes, bubba. Yes, sir."

154. Stands like that. He says, "You tested positive for cocaine"

155. "Thank you, thank you very much, thank you."

156. The Iron Sheik stories are legendary.

157. The story of his toughness are legendary.

158. Of his badassery are legendary.

159. I am siting in the room, drinking some beers, maybe smoking a joint,

160. and Sheik would be there with everybody else,

161. having little toke and then he'll start doing squats.

162. And he'll do hundreds of squats.

163. Till he is dripping with sweat, I mean dripping.

164. I mean, he's got the constitution of a rhino.

165. That was his thing, come let's party, let's have some fun.

166. He wasn't an asshole when he got wasted, you know what I mean.

167. Unless he really got trashed and all then, yes, cops were called.

168. I learnt everything I know from him.

169. A lot, well not everything but a lot.

170. You have to hang around this man right here.

171. Anybody that has never been in this man's company, damn!

172. The Iron Sheik is probably one of the greatest heels to ever be in the business.

173. And for so many years when I was a kid,

174. there was nobody that I hated more than Iron Sheik.

175. He was just the epitome of what a bad guy should be.

176. When I was little girl, I was a tomboy, so of course, I dressed like him,

177. Come over here.

178. Hey, baby. - Good to see you.

179. The Iron Sheik one of the first people I managed in Memphis, Tennesse.

180. He used to come by my house, remember, and we would drive

181. and had some great matches down here.

182. One time on TV, live, one and half hour live,

183. Iron Sheik and I were doing an interview, a man and a boy in the city,

184. They were gonna shoot the Sheik and myself. I was like, "Oh, my God."

185. WWF, well WWW at that time, always looking for fresh faces

186. to be the new villain.

187. McMahon had great vision, he saw that, "I have potentially one of the great villains here."

188. That we can maximize, that we can monetize.

189. It will make everybody that touches the product, more money.

190. The key components to successful promotion,

191. are having villains that people disdain.

192. I saw him in New York, Sheik was an Iranian there,

193. who was managed by Freddie Bassie, who was my manager before that,

194. And Freddie Bassie says, "Nikolai, I have a deal for you and Sheik".

195. He's from Iran. They have their problems, like tolak bantuan.

196. You are from Russia. Cold war.

197. It would be the best tag team of bad guys.

198. Me and Sheik had so much heat already,

199. actually we would get more heat just going to the ring than other people had wrestling.

200. When I was singing my Russian national anthem, I told people to stand up,

201. that was unbelievable. That was unbelievable.

202. You know people are waiting for him to fuck him up.

203. He didn't have to do nothing to go, "Don't say you say 'thoo'" That's it, that was the match.

204. Because he was that evil menace.

205. If we can only get rid of him, that's the tip of the iceberg.

206. We know, he talk, he par talks to that Khamenei fellow on the phone,

207. I bet they got his number. He's over here, he's a spy.

208. Sheik embodied that.

209. And they wanted to kill him.

210. Comb your hair back. Alexis, come here, baby.

211. I wanna see your glasses.

212. Now, feel the papa Sheik.

213. Let me show you my arm.

214. And then you tell me, who's bigger.

215. Papa Sheik won.

216. - Papa Sheik, yeah. - Papa Sheik won.

217. Beautiful.

218. My dad was a wrestler,

219. and he, um, he was famous,

220. and we used to see him when he was in between working.

221. We never really understood that our dad was famous when we were little.

222. Uh, we knew it was different

223. because our friend's dads didn't have cartoons on Saturday mornings,

224. they didn't have dolls of their dad.

225. So, we knew there was definitely something special about him and what he did.

226. see Junkyard Dog back down from the fight. Not this one.

227. I really didn't realize a lot, I mean, I knew it was very cool,

228. in school a lot of kids would always ask me wrestling questions,

229. and I didn't know, you know.

230. If it's fake, or wasn't fake, I didn't really,

231. for long I never understood what they meant by "is it fake?".

232. My husband's career was flourishing.

233. His role with his daughters was limited because he was gone so much.

234. But when he was home, he basically,

235. took advantage of every minute he had.

236. He would call all the kids over to our house,

237. and he would train them like they were in Olympics.

238. And he had them running till they were all red in the face.

239. But all of our friends and neighbors were used to it,

240. and they would either not play with us when our dad was in town or just run home.

241. And we always wanted to do that but we couldn't because our dad was the one making us do it.

242. I guessed he'd asked her if they could take me back because he wanted a boy.

243. So, growing up, dating was something off-limits until we graduated from college.

244. He'd scream at us that he didn't have a whore house.

245. No boy should be calling our house.

246. So, we would have to sneak to talk to them when he wasn't there.

247. My sisters would bring boys around and the first thing he would do

248. is take them outside and show them the Camel Clutch

249. and show them how much he could bench-press and how much he could lift.

250. And then ask them to do the same.

251. And they inevitably never could and he just wanted to let them know how strong he was.

252. - Okay. - Now, put this in wash.

253. It's not easy being the wife of a professional athlete.

254. But then again, too, I have to consider the fact that,

255. look what he does for us by working and constantly being gone.

256. Professional wrestling took off

257. as it had never had before in the 1980s.

258. Vince McMahon was the promoter,

259. the one wrestling promoter that had the vision

260. to see that wrestling wasn't gonna be done

261. in smoke filled arenas, in little towns any more.

262. It had to be, like a touring event at the big arenas.

263. But Vince McMahon man doesn't want WWF to remain simply in north eastern territory.

264. Vince McMahon wants WWF, later WWE to be an international brand.

265. It was a ballsy and gutsy move from Vince McMahon.

266. And it takes vision and it takes balls.

267. And you gotta have your hero and you gotta have your villain.

268. Listen, lady, this is my property.

269. Now, get out of here, you lazy American!

270. One! Iran, No. 1. The Sheik, No. 1

271. Wrestling wasn't gonna cross over

272. if there weren't celebrities involved.

273. So Vince McMahon went out, I don't know what the terms

274. of those deals were but he got celebrities.

275. He got Cyndi Lauper at the height of her fame involved with the WWF.

276. The celebrities coming to the garden and coming to you know, the other arenas,

277. and essentially endorsing what Vince McMahon had created.

278. Wrestling in the 80s...

279. It was, it was crazy.

280. But once you went to WWF...

281. Fucking couldn't go nowhere.

282. 'Cause you're everywhere.

283. It was a magical time.

284. The excitement, the buildings were... All of them were sold out.

285. The Hulk Hogan era was the most influential.

286. The most significant of any era in the history of the business.

287. Hulk Hogan is unique.

288. Hulk Hogan had already been in Rocky III.

289. He'd already been on The Tonight Show.

290. This is an era when nobody paid any attention to wrestling.

291. But people were beginning to know who Hulk Hogan was.

292. Vince K McMahon saw that the business was changing and he had a chance for,

293. to make a change from Backlund to Hogan.

294. Bob Backlund first won

295. the WWF ttle, in 1978.

296. But Bob Backlund doesn't want to loose directly to Hulk Hogan.

297. He doesn't respect Hulk Hogan as a pure athlete.

298. Bob Backlund, however will loose the title to The Iron Sheik

299. because he respects The Iron Sheik as an athlete.

300. And it doesn't seem far fetched

301. that somebody with Khosrow Vaziris amateur background could pin Bob Backlund.

302. You knew what you were gonna do with Backlund.

303. You were gonna take the championship off of him after six nice years.

304. And let him recharge his batteries.

305. You were gonna start a new thing with Hulk Hogan.

306. The Hoganair with the guy in the middle.

307. The one that facilitated it, which was our Sheik.

308. Had to be the right guy.

309. The set up for success for Hulkamania,

310. the Iron Sheik was the perfect counterpart to that. Perfect.

311. Body slam! Elbow!

312. He made Backlund's loss more bitter.

313. He made Hogan's victory more sweet.

314. That was the beginning of it all.

315. Bob Backlund did a fantastic job

316. of giving wrestling credibility.

317. And then, here comes all American, Hulk Hogan.

318. And drops that leg and beats the Sheik. And Bingo.

319. Sheik! Sheik!

320. - I can't believe it's you.

321. I can't believe it. Man!

322. Man, I love you so much!

323. Great to see you. Great to see you. How's Melvin?

324. The Hulkamania thing took off and Vince Junior called me,

325. and told me he had a great idea for the business. He was gonna take it international.

326. And they wanted me to come in and they had an idea

327. to put the gold on me and wrestle the Iron Sheik.

328. They talked about skyrocketing a guy, um...

329. It's always the matter of the right person and in the right place

330. at the right time with the right opponent.

331. And so Hulk Hogan was put into the right place

332. at the right time with the perfect opponent.

333. In the case of Hulkamania, not only was the Iron Sheik an integral part of that,

334. it couldn't have happened without the Iron Sheik.

335. Without Hulkamania, there's no Wrestlemania.

336. There's probably no WWE as we know it today.

337. And without the Iron Sheik, there's no Hulkamania.

338. The fans are going wild and I'm so excited to be here.

339. When Vince was looking to make Hulk

340. he had the idea of how you made Hulk

341. you make a real American, a great American

342. by being the worst foreign menace you can think of.

343. And Sheik came in and did that.

344. Sheik had a lot of offers. Sheik had a lot of people in his ears,

345. "Snap Hogan's leg. Don't do this. "

346. You know, uh... "Screw Vince over. Beat him up."

347. "Torture him. Don't do business."

348. He's gonna reach down inside, for that little bit of something more...

349. I think it would have helped wrestling if he broke his leg because...

350. I'm just a crude bastard. I like heat.

351. You know, I think the bad guys have to come up every now and then.

352. And the whole thing about Hulkamania was...

353. You know, you wrestled him one time, man. You're done.

354. And that's how they built the Hulk.

355. They fed him every great piece of talent,

356. the world ever knew.

357. What if...

358. The Sheik decided to take Verne Gagne's offer

359. and break Hulk Hogan's leg?

360. If he had done that, had he double crossed Hulk Hogan

361. broken his leg and taken the Championship belt and brought it to Minneapolis,

362. that would have been the end of this whole roll that WWF was on.

363. His word, by the way was important.

364. Gave his word to Vince McMahon, he gave his word to Hulk Hogan.

365. And Sheik went out and put Hogan over like a million bucks.

366. Not a lot of guys would have done that.

367. A lot of- Especially with Sheik's credentials.

368. If Sheik wanted to, he could tie Hogan up in a knot.

369. But he didn't.

370. He did business. He did the right thing.

371. And they wanted me to come in and they had an idea

372. to put the gold on me and wrestle the Iron Sheik.

373. And at one end, it was crazy that night.

374. The Iron Sheik was the ultimate heel.

375. He had more heat than anybody I had ever seen.

376. And he was the real deal, you know.

377. So I went in there and the Iron Sheik graciously passed the torch to me.

378. And we had a bunch of great matches.

379. That was really, really where my career got launched,

380. because once the Iron Sheik put me over, the whole community thing was unstoppable.

381. Victory! We have a new champion!

382. Hulk Hogan blowing the horn on the Iron Sheik.

383. History has been made at Madison Square Garden.

384. The match winner. Wrestlemania is here!

385. Wrestling didn't deviate from society in the 80s.

386. If you look at the National Football League

387. or Baseball or NBA, NHL or Hollywood,

388. it was a very decadent decade of the 80s.

389. It wasn't that wrestling had the exclusive

390. on people making bad decisions.

391. Drug possession charges in the New Jersey Courtroom today.

392. The Sheik's fans were on hand to wish him luck outside the Middletown's Municipal Court.

393. The Sheik was arrested with fellow wrestler, Jim Duggan

394. and charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine

395. as they drove along the Garden State Parkway.

396. I was relatively new to WWF back then.

397. I came in for Wrestlemania III where I hit the Sheik.

398. I had 93,000 people in the Pontiac Silverdome

399. standing up cheering, "USA! USA!"

400. The place was rocking.

401. I was getting the big push from the company.

402. And everything looked really rosy.

403. Fly to Newark airport, there's the Iron Sheik. He came up to me and said,

404. "I have no credit card. Maybe you give me ride to show."

405. We get to rent a car and start heading out of the Newark airport.

406. The Sheik says, "Uh, maybe we stop

407. "and get some St. Pauli Girl beer."

408. Keeps drinking those cold St. Pauli Girl beers.

409. "Okay, Sheik. Hell, I'll have a beer."

410. No sooner do I take the hit of a beer,

411. Jersey State troops like, went by me.

412. He's signaling and I'm like, I didn't see him.

413. And the Sheik's like, "He wants you to pull over."

414. And I'm like, "No. I don't think so."

415. The trooper leaned over the car and said, "Step out of the car."

416. They'll take us in. Now they gotta search us.

417. They went through my stuff. I was cool.

418. And Sheik, they opened up his wallet.

419. Boom! Two more grams of cocaine in two separate containers.

420. And they took him in front of a judge.

421. Finally, they brought him back. He got bonded out. He got a bail bond.

422. So we drove to Asbury Park and we're like,

423. "Well, maybe nobody knows."

424. So we actually wrestled that night in Asbury park.

425. And didn't tell nobody.

426. So I called my wife. I said, "Honey, I got popped."

427. But I don't think anybody knows about it."

428. My wife calls me at 7:30, the next morning,

429. "Everybody knows."

430. New York daily news had made the back page...

431. Big picture of the Sheik. Big picture of me.

432. It was like, "Boozing Bozos" was the headlines, you know.

433. And God, it was brutal.

434. Duggan and Sheik had started a program.

435. Duggun was this big all American just starting at WWF.

436. And Sheik was this horrible heel, this Iranian heel that everyone hated.

437. And the fact that they're riding together and doing drugs...

438. Smoking marijuana... Oh my God!

439. "Hacksaw, say it ain't so!"

440. "We can believe the Sheik does it. He's Iranian. He's a foreigner.

441. Yeah well, of course. They all do that. They're damn foreigners."

442. But Duggan, "Oh my God!"

443. Oh yeah. It was a little taboo. It was not good.

444. My next call was to Vince McMahon.

445. And I remember verbatim what he said to me.

446. He says, "Jim, what have you done to us?"

447. And there was a lot of fear that people would stop watching wrestling.

448. Because up until this point,

449. the common consensus was,

450. if the fans find out that it's a work,

451. that the matches are pre-determined, the whole thing is gonna go away.

452. But it was one of those last things that finally knocked down the whole curtain.

453. The idea that pro wrestling was on the up and out. And it wasn't too much later,

454. that the McMahons are testifying in front of the New Jersey Court saying,

455. "What we do is entertainment. We want to be taxed.

456. "like entertainment not like a sporting entity."

457. I do remember Vince saying on TV,

458. "The Iron Sheik and Jim Duggan

459. will never work for the WWF again."

460. Still making his way to ring.

461. He has for several eras

462. and 315 pounds.

463. The Former World's Heavy Weight Champion...

464. It was an absolute devastating situation.

465. We all but lost our house.

466. He was so ashamed.

467. So embarrassed.

468. Just felt like his life was over.

469. He ended up on the independent circuit.

470. two hundred, five hundred people.

471. The Mighty Maccabee, The Iron Sheik.

472. The Maccabee heavyweight title.

473. It sucks, man when you gotta do independents.

474. And these independents are high school gyms again, man.

475. Really, you know? And it's not fun.

476. But you still do, 'cause you gotta provide, man.

477. Maccabee's got the Sheik. He misses...

478. And so he had to take all these little bookings.

479. And it wasn't a real happy life.

480. One, two, three!

481. I was waiting for the bus one day after school

482. and I seen a flier on the bus stop saying,

483. "Live Wrestling featuring the Iron Sheik and Abdul the Butcher."

484. Yeah!

485. We started like, looking into it and we went to this event.

486. And it was about ten years since we saw the Sheik.

487. Went to this place. It's a small bar.

488. In a bad part of town.

489. And there's about a 110 people there.

490. There was live wrestling matches with guys who I never heard of.

491. And we spoke to the Sheik who was so happy to see us.

492. He gave us hugs and treated us like we was family.

493. As if you know, time

494. you know, was never slipped away.

495. - Yeah.

496. It's Jian. Jian Magen.

497. Oh yes. Jian Magen. How are you?

498. Good. How are you? Long time no speak.

499. My first introduction with the Iron Sheik,

500. I remember very, uh vividly.

501. My brother and I were three years old or so.

502. Look at me.

503. I remember sitting in front of my television

504. and a man screaming in Farsi.

505. And I remember my mom like, dropping a pot

506. and running into the family room

507. and screaming, "That's your dad's friend."

508. "That's your daddy's friend."

509. There's lots of it in here.

510. I was athlete. International table tennis player at the arena in Iran.

511. And back home, we were in High School.

512. So finally I got a hold of him and he was so proud.

513. He just says right away, "Come and pick me up.

514. I'm at hotel here, Maple Leaf Garden."

515. ] My dad would start driving usto Maple Leaf Garden.

516. And we would go to the show with the wrestlers.

517. The drug abuse tore our family apart.

518. It made us want to be strangers to each other.

519. No more effort in here no more. Rather they know I can't do that now.

520. I'm too fucking old for that bullshit.

521. This death, this slow death

522. of someone you love right in front of your eyes...

523. It hasn't happened yet.

524. But you know it's going to.

525. Just right around the corner.

526. We had realized at that time that

527. if we don't do something about this like, right now,

528. the Sheik will be just like every other wrestler

529. who's fallen off the map and from his generation.

530. And at that time I decided I wanted to go to Atlanta

531. and just be there for the Sheik because it was really getting out of control.

532. - Jian Magen! - Good to see you.
