1. Today, while the earth shakes beneath the heels of marching troops,

2. while a great portion of the world trembles

3. before the threats of acquisitive, power-mad men,

4. we of America have little time to remember

5. an astounding era in our own recent history,

6. an era which will grow more and more incredible

7. with each passing generation,

8. until someday people will say it never could've happened at all.

10. Almost a million American young men are engaged in a struggle

11. which they have been told will make the world safe for democracy.

135. The war is over, and the people of New York

136. are tiring of the constant triumphal procession of returning troops.

137. And still not all of them are back-

138. There is alarming news that women's skirts are going to become shorter.

139. Already they are 6 inches above the ankle.

140. Bobbed hair is introduced, but very timidly.

141. A young upstart named Jack Dempsey will meet Jess Willard

142. for the heavyweight championship of the world.

143. People are talking about the high cost of living.

144. Everything is going up. Food, rent, clothing, taxes.

145. The Prohibition amendment is ratified by the necessary 36 states

146. and becomes the law of the land.

147. People are dancing to the strains of "Dardanella."

148. Finally, late in the year,

149. the last detachments of the American expeditionary forces

150. come back from policing the Rhine,

151. almost forgotten by all but their relatives and friends.

152. Oh! It's Eddie Bartlett.

155. Well, when you didn't come back with the others, we thought you was dead.

156. They kept me in Germany to straighten things out.

260. The soldiers find they've returned to face, on a different front,

261. the same old struggle.

391. because, although the 18th Amendment is in effect,

392. the law has no teeth.

393. But on the 16th of January, the Volstead Act takes effect,

394. and traffic in liquor goes completely undercover,

395. to stay there for many long years.

396. The word "speakeasy" begins to appear in our language.

397. And the forces of the underworld,

398. who best know how to operate outside the law,

399. are moving in on a new source of revenue,

400. the magnitude of which no man dare guess.

401. Sixty cents.

570. And so the Eddie of this story joins the thousands and thousands

571. of other Eddies throughout America.

572. He becomes a part of a criminal army,

573. an army that was born of a marriage between an unpopular law

574. and an unwilling public.

575. Liquor is the password in this army.

576. And it's a magic password that spells the dollar sign

577. as it spreads from city to city, from state to state.

578. The public is beginning to look upon the bootlegger

579. as something of an adventuresome hero,

580. a modern crusader who deals in bottles instead of battles.

581. And so because of a grotesque situation,

582. this new kind of army grows and grows,

583. always gaining new recruits who care nothing about tomorrow

584. just so long as money is easy today.

585. I'll take two dozen of those.

586. - Got a little bad news for you, Eddie. - Yeah? What?

587. Little price hike. It's up a dollar a bottle from here in.

588. Oh, you don't say. No kidding.

589. You're not gonna make a sucker out of me. Nobody else is.

590. I can make this tiger sweat myself. I got a bathtub too.

593. This is the real stuff. They can't fool me.

594. 1922. By now, the Prohibition law

595. is firmly a part of American life-

596. But so is the evasion of that law.

597. College students, male and female,

598. and even high-school boys and girls who never drank before

599. find themselves willing and able to buy hard liquor

600. with the greatest of ease.

601. The hip flask becomes an integral part of the national scene,

602. at football games,

603. in automobiles.

604. In the meanwhile, the supply of good alcohol

605. fails to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for liquor.

606. But in the undercover liquor industry, crude stills make their appearance.

607. Wood alcohol is recooked,

608. and the product of this loose and ineffective process

609. is put on the market in a constantly swelling flood.

610. - Hi, Danny. - Hi, Danny boy.

611. Hi, Lloyd.

612. Holy smoke, Eddie. Another one?

613. Yeah, sure.
