17. - Real genius.

18. This guy is one of the greatest.

19. Everything that I've always heard, I now understand.

20. - He had everything that you needed to be

21. a great professional wrestler,

22. and one of the great minds in the history of the business.

23. - In professional wrestling, the two athletes in the ring,

24. they're working together.

25. And I loved working with Jake, because it was so easy.

26. - Jake, to me, is one of the greatest talents

27. I've ever seen.

28. In the ring, he sure as hell could tell

29. probably the best story.

30. - I'd say the DDT and his promo work,

31. and his ring psychology

32. would be the three things that will always stand out

33. when people talk about Jake Roberts.

34. - He grew up on wrestling, he understands wrestling

35. and understands the psychology

36. in wrestling in front of a crowd.

37. - You know, if you're really good at what you do,

38. then the more believable you could make that character,

39. and the more you could draw them in

40. to where they're, you know,

41. sittin' on the edge of their seat.

42. And Jake had that ability.

43. - Jake Roberts is the guy who made me wanna watch

44. professional wrestling because you didn't know with Jake.

45. You didn't know what was real and what was fake.

46. You just didn't know.

47. - You know, when the cobra bit Macho's arm.

48. - And the snake has glommed on the arm!

49. And Randy Savage is helpless!

50. - The Snake was so unusual and so feared

51. that it became part of his persona.

52. - Jake's the kinda guy

53. who has that creative mind

54. that came through very naturally.

55. - A long time ago I learned one thing:

56. that if a man has enough power,

57. he can speak softly and everyone will listen.

58. - He'd whisper and man, there was somethin' different

59. about a guy who didn't yell at you

60. like everybody else did.

61. - People get drawn into it

62. and they're paying attention more than they would

63. than if you're yelling and screaming,

64. yelling and screaming.

65. - Even a fool knows that a man only has five senses.

66. A Snake, he has six.

67. - And he was one of the first people whose promos I saw

68. and he scared me.

69. You know, he creeped me out.

75. - There are very few guys

76. that actually made me fear.

84. - And that's the grace of any great finishing maneuver.

93. And just thinking, like,

98. He has to be totally out of it!

99. - So there was always an era of mystery with Jake.

100. - Well let me tell you something.

101. It's more shameful to deny fear

102. than it is to run from danger.

103. - When it comes time for me to

104. name a few of my favorite Pro Wrestlers,

105. Jake is always on my list.

106. - If you're a student of wrestling,

107. and you don't watch Jake Roberts' matches

108. and his interviews,

109. then you're missin' out on one of the best ever.

110. - I think he was an influence on this entire generation.

111. You gotta be able to speak.

112. He's got it.

113. You gotta be able to work, he's got it.

114. - He had intensity.

115. He had everything that you needed

116. to be one of the great minds in the history of the business,

117. and was a huge influence on my work.

118. - I don't care how much bigger their opponent is,

119. whoever their opponent is,

120. is in danger.

121. And that's such an amazing talent to have.

122. As a performer, have that audience

123. doubting.

126. - As we have established, all of us,

127. a brand new, indoor attendance record

128. of 93,173!

130. - I remember laying on our floor

131. in Gainesville, in Texas

132. and watching wrestling on Sunday morning with our uncle.

133. And that's kinda how we learned about who our father is.

134. That was really the only time we had.

135. - My brothers are five years younger than me

136. and they're twins.

137. And nobody asked me to,

138. but I felt like it was my job as an older sister,

139. so I protected them.

140. - Jake, kind of had two careers.

141. One was this great piece of talent,

142. who could communicate.

143. And then he had that other career

144. that most people don't want to talk to,

145. but he went through hell.

146. - In the last three or four years,

147. I didn't think I was gonna have a dad around.

148. - It's scary to think, you know,

149. what Jake coulda done

150. had he been totally straight his whole career.

151. - He's one of the best, but he's got a lotta issues

152. that stop him from doing more.

153. - When the entire world knows you as one character

154. for such a long time,

155. I think it's easy to become that character.

156. - The crowd doesn't know who you really are

157. and then you leave that arena

158. and you have to go back to a hotel

159. and it's like you're all wired up

160. and now we gotta shut it off.

161. - You just wrestled in front of 50,000 people, so, phew!

162. - Us as addicts, we can...

163. Our minds tend to

164. wander a little bit looking for something to do,

165. which cannot, you know, it's not a good thing.

166. - Back in the day, when they really traveled like they did,

167. nonstop, and the way that Jake was livin',

168. obviously hard and fast,

169. combined with that wrestling career.

170. You know, I know that guy feels like...

171. garbage.

172. - Your wife's not there, your kids aren't there,

173. and so how do you fill this void?

174. And...

175. - The thumbs start to twiddle and—

176. - All's you see is the negative

177. and the dark, deep, places of death.

178. - Every time I tried to talk to him about it,

179. you know, he'd just kinda, "Ah, I know what I'm doin'.

180. "I know what I'm doin'."

181. And I'd say, "Jake, you don't know what you're doin'.

182. "It's got you."

183. - Suddenly, the reputation, the desire of this great pro

184. is diminished down to nothing.

185. - And you see these people droppin' like flies

186. just dyin' and dyin' and you're like,

187. "God, please don't take Jake from this earth," you know?

188. "Not another one."

189. - Hell, I wanna see Jake live to be an old man.

190. In our business, sometimes that doesn't always happen.

191. You get a lot of guys meeting their demise

192. and leaving this world way too soon.

193. - We told the promoter, "Listen, dude.

194. "Do not put him out there.

195. "He is in no shape to perform tonight."

196. - Excuse me.

197. Shut the hell up.

198. - There were 22 of those airplane vodka bottles.

199. 22 of 'em around where he was sitting,

200. on top of everything else.

201. - You're not...

202. givin' me the same respect, man.

204. - You know, J.T. takes Jake over to the corner.

205. And he hits him and Jake doesn't register it.

206. Two seconds later he falls flat on his face.

207. - Do you think they booked Jake "The Snake" Roberts

208. to lose in 30 seconds?

209. Like, I mean, no.

210. Promoter's looking through the curtain

211. and, "What the hell just happened?"

212. And he goes,

213. "Go, go do something. Somebody do something."

214. And I'm like, "What do you want me to do?"

215. And he's like, "Go take a DDT and get him out of there."

216. So, I'm nailing him, and if you look at the tape,

217. the stuff looks fake,

218. because I'm talking to him,

219. "Jake, come on. Just give me a DDT.

220. "That's it, and this whole thing is fixed."

221. And he is not working.

222. If he would have given me the DDT,

223. I'm telling you TMZ would have never had nothin'.

224. The people would have left before it got stupid.

225. But the whole reason that I got to the level that I got,

226. he's standing in the ring,

227. exposin' himself.

228. So while part of you does what everybody does.

229. They go, "Well, I feel sorry and I hope that

230. "he gets the help that he needs."

231. But then the other part of you,

232. especially if you're a part of it,

233. you go, "Eh, the hell with that."

234. - When there's an accident on the road,

235. I don't stop.

236. I don't like watching stuff like that

237. and I think it bothered me,

238. the fact that people would rather film it

239. than try and help.

240. - I went out there to make these people happy,

241. 'cause you couldn't perform a lick.

255. He was one of my two mentors.

257. I was very fortunate to have those two

258. mentor me.

259. Jake believed in me when

260. really very, very, very few people believed in me.

261. Jake was the one who gave me the knowledge

262. and I was nobody at the time.

263. - Dallas, came into the wrestling business very late.

264. - At age 35, become a wrestler for the first time?

265. - You wanna talk work ethic, DDP has it.

266. If he can do somethin',

267. he's gonna do it to the utmost of his ability.

268. There's no room for second best.

269. - Diamond Dallas Page got his start

270. in professional wrestling.

271. Now he's created a fitness system

272. that some people are calling life changing.

273. - I knew how close Page was with Jake,

274. or how much he respected him.

275. He was always talking about Jake Roberts.

276. Two, I knew how down and out Jake was.

277. He had nowhere left to go.

278. - Us as addicts and alcoholics,

279. we like to do things our way.

280. And that doesn't work sometimes.

281. You got to, I had to give the reins to somebody else

282. and let them drive, and that's OK.

283. - There's obviously some skepticism.

284. You know, I think there has to be.

285. Only because addiction's an ugly beast.

286. - It's not a drug rehabilitation center.

287. - But I truly thought if there's someone's positivity

288. that can ram through that,

289. is gonna be Dallas.

290. - Jake has hit on some really hard times.

291. His body's really beat up.

292. He's got a new hip.

293. His neck's messed up.

294. Havin' problems with concussions,

295. all sorts of shit.

296. Bottom line is,

297. before anyone can actually help you,

298. like, you gotta be ready to help yourself.

316. The only passion I had was wrestling.

317. Had to give it up.

318. I had a life, but I poisoned it.

320. My father wrestled.

321. I was never around him.

322. Well, he didn't show up for my graduation,

323. and he never went to a ballgame I did, or nothing.

324. Went to see him and,

325. "Hey Dad, I graduated high school.

326. "I want to go to college."

327. My dad looked down at me, he said,

328. "You're gutless.

329. "I'm ashamed of you, and you'll never amount to anything."

330. And I got angry, man.

331. I got so fucking mad.

332. I was insane mad.

333. I always swore up and down that, you know,

334. when I grow up I'll never do that shit.

335. - Then why did you do it?

336. - I wanted to shove it up his ass.

337. Came up with this idea,

338. if you want your father to be proud of you,

339. you do what he's doing and show him up.

340. Just to get him, man.

341. And I've never...

342. truly forgiven him

343. for what he'd done to me as a child.

405. He wasn't using drugs and he wasn't drinking alcohol.

406. So, it was our primary focus to help Jake get into shape.

420. in someone changing their life.

422. same shit he said to me years and years ago.

439. that really made him want to change.

902. to try to raise the money for his surgery.

907. and we'd never done anything like this before.

908. We haven't checked it out or anything, so we wanna

1143. You know, I've had longer periods of time,

1144. but it's always been in some kind of facility.

1145. 'Cause it's gettin' real.

1146. Like, change is really scary for me.

1147. Even though I know it's gonna be somethin' positive.

1149. I mean his inside heart, his drive,

1150. his motivation, his inspiration,

1151. I can see that.

1152. - No matter how horrible my life was in the past,

1153. I always had my body to fall back on.

1154. I always had my body, always had my physique,

1155. and you know, I had this heart procedure in 2010,

1156. where they implanted a pacemaker and a defibrillator,

1157. and I was really, really sick.

1158. You know, I can't lift anymore,

1159. and whenever things would be stressful and all this stuff

1160. was comin' down on me, I could always go to the gym.

1161. I always had my body as a place to retreat.

1162. When I look in the mirror, you know, I'm goin',

1164. But boy, when I see it on film,

1165. I'm reminded that I got a long way to go.

1166. I've had a few brief workouts, but I got a few hiccups,

1167. you know, a few dings.

1168. Old injuries are rearin' their heads,

1169. and try to have, figure out how to deal with them.

1577. and I've been treated like and feel like I'm part of the team,

1719. Our goal was to try to figure out what we could do

1720. to prevent him from relapsing again.

1721. Once I think Jake started to understand that,

1722. he made a lotta progress.

1723. - And maybe it's from not goin' to the meetings and shit,

1724. but I'll be startin' to feel funny, you know.

1725. Been over a year.

1726. - You did reach out to me.

1728. And I got the text, you said,

1729. "Dude. I'm goin' to see my shrink again."

1730. And I said, "Do you need me?"

1731. I remember that day, when I said,

1732. "Dude, where you at?"

1733. And then I never heard from you again.

1735. - So I did feel you reach out to me.

1736. - I was so fuckin' miserable.

1737. I was fuckin' goin' crazy inside my head.

1738. I didn't know which way was up, which way was down,

1739. who my friends were, who they weren't,

1740. and I knew better.

1741. - I know we're never gonna take you down that path.

1744. So, if you put yourself in that, in that environment,

1745. it's a slippery world.

2092. was to somehow, some way,

2093. be on this stage on this very night.

2094. Our next inductee to the Class of 2014.

2099. - The one thing that I have found that always wins,

2100. that conquers everything,

2102. If you just keep loving people through those hard times,

2103. I think that eventually, they get it.

2104. - Starts off as a 300 pound drug addict,

2105. and finishes up 18 months later

2106. as a 245 pound WWE Hall of Famer.

2109. professional wrestling.

2110. I shoulda shared the time more wisely

2111. because I don't regret loving wrestling.

2112. Because there's nothing on this planet like it.

2113. I was given an innate amount of talent by God a long time ago.

2115. I'm ashamed that I wasted a lot of it.

2116. - Sure makes me feel good that there is people in the world

2117. that know how to get people out of the low slump areas

2118. of their lives, and back up on top.

2119. - But for some reason, one person sticks a hand out.

2120. And that person, for me, was Diamond Dallas Page.

2124. because I've got some special people here
