1. My father hated lawyers all his life.

2. He wasn't a great guy, my old man.

3. He drank and beat up my mother. He beat me up, too.

4. So you might think I became a lawyer just to piss him off,

7. ever since I read about the civil rights lawyers in the '50s and '60s

8. and the amazing uses they found for the law.

9. They did what a lot of people thought was the impossible,

10. they gave lawyers a good name.

11. And so I went to law school,

12. and it did piss my father off, but he was pissed off anyway.

13. In my first year, he got drunk one day,

14. fell off a ladder manufactured by the company he worked for,

15. and he didn't know who to sue first.

16. Well, he died a couple of months after that.

17. Now, some of my classmates,

18. they knew they were going straight from school into the top law firms,

19. thanks mostly to their family connections.

20. Now the only connections I had

21. were made in the places where I tended bar for three years

22. so I could pay my tuition.

23. And while I still had plans to shine the blazing light of justice

24. into every dark corner, what I really needed right now

25. was a job, and badly.

26. Because there are too many lawyers in Memphis.
