The Other Side of the Wind (2018)

1. At age 55, after two decades in exile,

2. Orson Welles returned to Hollywood

3. to start work on his comeback film, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND.

4. Production began in 1970

5. and lasted, off and on, through early 1976,

6. with editing continuing into the 1980s.

7. Mired in complex legal, financial, and political turmoil,

8. he was not able to finish the picture.

9. Welles died in 1985, leaving behind nearly 100 hours of footage,

10. a workprint consisting of assemblies and a few edited scenes,

11. annotated scripts, memos, thoughts, and directives.

12. This is an attempt to honor and complete his vision.

13. That's the car...

14. What was left of it after the accident.

15. If it was an accident.

16. Hannaford, before he changed his mind,

17. was going to give the car

18. to the young leading actor of his last movie,

19. John Dale.

20. And Hannaford was supposed to have saved him,

21. at some earlier date,

22. from committing suicide.

23. Or so the story goes...

24. As for his own death,

25. his admirers were sure that Hannaford did not intend

26. to drive the car off that bridge.

27. "A corny ending," they said.

28. J.J. Hannaford would never be guilty of that.

29. But there were other opinions.

30. He died many summers ago,

31. July 2nd.

32. For years, I personally didn't want this document shown,

33. because, frankly, I didn't like the way I came off in the piece.

34. But I'm old enough now,

35. not to care anymore

36. how my role in Jake's life is interpreted.

37. My name is Brooks Otterlake,

38. probably Hannaford's most successful acolyte.

39. Anyway, this little historical document

40. has been put together from many sources.

41. From all the footage shot by TV and documentary filmmakers,

42. and also the students, critics and young directors

43. who happened to bring 16 and 8mm cameras,

44. having been invited to Jake's

45. 70th birthday party.

46. That was long before cell phone cameras

47. and computerized images.

48. The choice of this material is an attempt

49. to sketch a film likeness of the man himself as he looked...

50. through all those different viewfinders.
