The Mole People (1956)

1. - Ladies and gentlemen, it's amazing how much

2. we know about the surface of our globe.

3. In the last 100 years men have

4. progressively studied this.

5. Explorations have reached the North, the South Pole.

6. There are really relatively only a few square miles left

7. of the surface of our globe that are not known.

8. During the same years, men have reached out into the stars,

9. three times further in your lifetime and mine,

10. three times further into space

11. than men have ever been able to go before.

12. Amazing knowledge we have of that and of this.

13. What's inside this globe?

14. What is there beneath our feet as we stand on the Earth?

15. No one knows, of course.

16. And science ponders about it

17. and all men are curious, but no one knows.

18. Primitive man, going into caves,

19. reaching back and back, and down and down,

20. wondered what lay beyond, and in terror he fled out.

21. And he remembered strange sighs and noises.

22. Now you go back to Mesopotamia

23. and the beginning of Western civilization,

24. and you have the great hero

25. Gilgamesh going down into the underworld.

26. And so, too, with the Greeks.

27. All down through time.

28. Religions of the past have postulated the existence

29. of this inner habitable world.

30. All through the Middle Ages, people believed of

31. something under the surface.

32. Dante, the great Dante, saw great cone-like cavities

33. stretching down to the very center of the Earth.

34. There's nothing new about this.

35. It's as old as man, this belief that under the surface

36. there may be areas inhabitable by man.

37. And in our time and in the last 100 years,

38. there've been a number of theories,

39. very curious and strange theories,

40. about what goes on in the center of our planet.

41. This is a very famous and interesting and odd one.

42. A soldier, rather, a minor hero of the War of 1812

43. was a man named John Cleves Symmes.

44. And he had a sudden idea that inside our world,

45. like onion layers, there were globes within globes,

46. five of them, some of them inhabited,

47. and that if you were to travel up

48. through the icy wastes of our world,

49. the northwest edge of Siberia,

50. you could go down through a hole,

51. and go successively to these various spheres.

52. Unfortunately, he was thoroughly obsessed with this,

53. went around lecturing,

54. and in fatigue, died before he could make this experiment.

55. Now, here's another theory much closer to us.

56. This is 1870, about.

57. A young American physician named

58. Cyrus Reed Teed had a revelation.

59. We are not living on the outside of the globe,

60. said Teed, but on the inside,

61. that when we think we're looking out at the Sun,

62. we're really looking in at the Sun.

63. Strange, strange.

64. Questing mind of man that tries to find answers

65. to things that he can't understand.

66. This was a theory by Karl Neupert, in Germany, in the 1920s.

67. He, again, imagined that we're living on the inside,

68. rather than the outside of the globe.

69. And here's a real Sun, and a real Moon,

70. and then a rather shadowy and formless

71. mass of electric potentiality

72. with little bright sparks in it.

73. And they give us the sense of our stars.

74. So in this picture you're about to see,

75. you'll see the culmination of a long series

76. of such desires to look into the Earth.

77. One might well believe philosophically,

78. that some ancient culture,

79. engulfed by a great and tremendous upheaval

80. of nature might linger on in some pocket of Earth.

81. This is science fiction, of course.

82. It's a fiction.

83. It's a fable beyond fiction,

84. for I think if you'll study this picture and think about it,

85. when it's over, you'll realize that this is

86. something more than just a story told.

87. It's a fable with a meaning

88. and a significance for you and for me
