1. To the fond, happy, friendly memory of John XXIII

2. Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife,

3. for she has conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost.

4. She will bear a son whom you will call Jesus,

5. for he is to save his people from their sins.

6. The virgin shall be with child

7. and shall bear a son

8. and they shall call him Emmanuel, meaning God with us.

9. Where has the King of the Jews been born?

10. We have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.

11. Where will Christ be born?

12. At Bethlehem in Judea, the prophet wrote:

13. "And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judea

14. "art far from the least among the princes of Judea.

15. "For out of you will arise a leader

16. "who is to be the shepherd of my people Israel."

17. Seek the child, and when you have found him

18. bring me word so I too may come and worship him.

19. Take the child and his mother,

20. flee to Egypt and remain there until I give you word.

21. For Herod will soon search for the child, to destroy him.

22. I called my son out of Egypt.

23. A voice was heard in Ramah - the sound of wailing and great sorrow.

24. Rachel wept for her children,

25. she would not be comforted, because they are no more.

26. Take the child and his mother and return to Israel,

27. for those who sought the child's life are dead.

28. Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

29. He was the one the prophet Isaiah was referring to when he said:

30. "There is a voice of one crying in the wilderness.

31. "Prepare the way of the Lord,

32. "make his paths straight."

33. Brood of vipers! Who taught you to flee from the coming wrath?

34. Bring forth fruit that is worthy of your repentance.

35. Do not presume to say in your hearts: "We have Abraham for our father."

36. God has power to raise up children to Abraham out of these very stones.

37. Already the axe has been put to the root of the trees,

38. so that every tree that does not bear good fruit

39. will be cut down and cast into the fire.

40. I am baptising you with water, for your repentance.

41. But one is to come after me who is mightier than I,

42. so that I am not worthy even to carry his shoes for him.

43. He will baptise you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.

44. He holds his winnowing fan

45. to sweep his threshing-floor clean.

46. He will gather the wheat into his barn

47. but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

48. It is I that ought to be baptised by you.

49. Do you come to me?

50. Let it be so for now,

51. so that we may justly fulfil our religious duty.

52. This is my beloved Son

53. in whom I am well pleased.

54. If you are the Son of God, turn these stones into bread.

55. Man cannot live by bread alone

56. but by all the words which proceed from the mouth of God.

57. If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down to earth. For it is written:

58. "He has charged angels to watch over you

59. "lest you should trip on a stone."

60. It is further written: "You shall not put the Lord your God to the proof."

61. I will give you all these, if you will fall down and worship me.

62. Away with you, Satan!

63. It is written: "You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve none but him."

64. The people who were dwelling in darkness have seen a great light.

65. For men living in a land where death overshadowed them, light has dawned.

66. Repent, the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

71. The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.

72. Ask the Lord whose harvest it is to send labourers for the harvesting.

85. You shall be labourers for the harvesting.

86. I am sending you to be like sheep among wolves.

87. You must be wary as serpents,

88. yet innocent as doves.

89. Be on your guard against men.

90. They'll hand you over to their courts and flog you in their synagogues.

91. On my account you will bear witness before governors, kings and Gentiles.

92. When you are given up into their hands do not fear what to say,

93. because when the time comes, you will be given the right words.

94. It is not you who will be speaking,

95. but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

96. You will be hated by all men because you bear my name.

97. Fear not those who kill the body but have no means of killing the soul.

98. Fear him more who has the power to ruin body and soul in hell.

99. Are not sparrows sold two for a penny?

100. Yet not one of them may fall to the ground without your Father's will.

101. Every hair of your head he takes into his reckoning.

102. Fear not, you count more than a host of sparrows.

103. Do not imagine I have come to bring peace to the earth.

104. I have come to bring a sword, not peace.

105. I have come to set a man against his father,

106. and a daughter against her mother,

107. and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

108. A man's enemies will include members of his own family.

109. Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me,

110. or anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

111. If you cling to your life, you will lose it,

112. but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

113. Lord, if you are willing, make me clean.

114. I am willing, be cleansed.

115. Tell no man, rather go and show yourself to the priest

116. and offer the gift that Moses commanded

117. as a testimony to them.

118. Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

119. Blessed are those who mourn; they shall be comforted.

120. Blessed are the patient; they shall inherit the land.

121. Blessed are those who hunger for holiness; they shall have their fill.

122. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

123. Blessed are the clean in heart, for they shall see God.

124. Blessed are the peace-makers,

125. for they will be called the children of God.

126. Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,

127. because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

128. Blessed are you, when men revile you and persecute you

129. and speak all manner of evil against you falsely because of me.

130. Rejoice and be glad, a rich reward awaits you in heaven.

131. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

132. If your son asked for bread, would you give him a stone?

133. If he asked for a fish, would you give him a serpent?

134. If you, evil as you are, know what is good for your children

135. will not your Father in heaven give more good gifts to those who ask?

136. Do to other men all that you would have them do to you.

137. That is the Law and the prophets.

138. Do not think I have come to set aside the Law and the prophets.

139. I have come to bring them to perfection.

140. You are the salt of the earth,

141. but if salt loses its flavour, how can it be made salty again?

142. It's no longer good for anything,

143. except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

144. You are the light of the world.

145. A city on a mountain top cannot be hidden.

146. A lamp is not placed under a bushel,

147. it is put where it will light the house.

148. Do not lay up treasure on earth

149. where moths and rust consume it

150. and where thieves break in and steal it.

151. Instead, store up treasure for yourselves in heaven

152. where there are no moths, no rust and no thieves to steal it.

153. A man cannot serve two masters.

154. He will hate one and love the other, devote himself to one, scorn the other.

155. You may serve God or money; you cannot serve both.

156. When you give to the needy,

157. do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

158. so that your merciful deeds may be in secret.

159. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

160. You have heard it said: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

161. I tell you, do not offer resistance.

162. If a man strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other.

163. You have heard it said: "Love your neighbour and hate your enemy."

164. I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

165. so that you may be true sons of your Father in heaven

166. who makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good,

167. his rain fall on the just and on the unjust.

168. Do not judge others, or you yourselves will be judged.

169. For in the way you judge, you will be judged

170. and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.

171. How is it you see the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye

172. and are not aware of the log in your own?

173. When you pray, don't use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do.

174. They think that by being so wordy they will be heard.

175. You are not to be like them.

176. Your Father knows well what your needs are before you ask him.

177. This, then, is to be your prayer...

178. Our Father in heaven,

179. Hallowed be your name.

180. Your kingdom come,

181. your will be done,

182. on earth as it is in heaven.

183. Give us today our daily bread.

184. And forgive us our sins

185. as we forgive those who sin against us.

186. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

187. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about everyday life,

188. what you will eat or drink,

189. or about your body, what you will wear.

190. Is not life more important than food,

191. and the body more important than clothes?

192. Look at the birds of the air,

193. they do not sow, or reap, or gather grain into barns,

194. and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

195. Are you not more valuable than they are?

196. Indeed, which of you can make his life any longer by being anxious?

197. Why should you be anxious about clothing?

198. See how the lilies of the field grow,

199. they don't work or make their clothing,

200. and yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory

201. was not dressed like one of these.

202. If God so clothes the grasses of the field,

203. which live today and will be thrown into the fire tomorrow,

204. will he not be much more ready to clothe you, men of little faith?

205. Do not fret then, asking what you will eat or drink or wear.

206. It is for the Gentiles to busy themselves over such things -

207. you have a Father in heaven who knows that you need them all.

208. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

209. and all these things will be given to you as well.

210. Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

211. Today's trouble is enough for today.

212. Make your way in by the narrow gate.

213. It is a broad gate and a wide road that leads to perdition

214. and those who go that way are many indeed.

215. How small the gate, how narrow the road that leads to life

216. and how few there are that find it.

217. Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I give you praise

218. that you have hidden this from the wise

219. and revealed it to children.

220. Yes, Father, because this is what was pleasing to you.

221. My Father has entrusted everything into my hands.

222. No one knows the Son except the Father.

223. And no one knows the Father except the Son

224. and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

225. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened; I will give you rest.

226. Take my yoke upon yourselves and learn from me.

227. I am gentle and humble of heart; you shall find rest for your souls.

228. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

229. Your disciples are doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath.

230. Have you never read what David did, when he and his followers hungered?

231. How he went into the tabernacle, and ate the loaves set out there

232. although neither he nor anyone but the priest had the right to eat them?

233. Or have you not read in the Law

234. that on the Sabbath, the priests on duty in the temple may work

235. and yet remain innocent?

236. I tell you, there is one standing here who is greater than the temple.

237. If you'd understood the words, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice",

238. you would not have condemned the guiltless.

239. For the Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath.

240. Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?

241. If one of your sheep fell into a pit

242. would you not pull it out on a Sabbath?

243. What is a sheep compared to a man?

244. Mercy is not unlawful on the Sabbath.

245. Throw away your crutches.

246. Tell no man that you have been healed

247. so that the word spoken by Isaiah may be fulfilled.

248. Behold my servant, my chosen, with whom my soul is well pleased.

249. I will lay my spirit on him,

250. and he shall proclaim my rule among Gentiles.

251. He will not protest and cry out; none shall hear his voice in the streets.

252. He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smouldering wick

253. until the time comes when he crowns his judgement with victory.

254. We must find a way to make away with him.

255. This is a remote place, and it is already getting late.

256. Send all these people to the village to buy food for themselves.

257. They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat.

258. We have only five loaves and two fishes.

259. Bring them to me.

260. I am going to pray.

261. Take a boat and cross to the other side.

262. It's a ghost.

263. Take courage, it is I.

264. Do not be afraid.

265. Lord, if it is you, bid me to come to you over the water.

266. Come!

267. Lord, save me!

268. Why did you hesitate, man of little faith?

269. Is it his coming that was foretold

270. or are we yet waiting for some other?

271. John has sent us to ask if it is your coming that was foretold.

272. Go and tell John what your own ears and eyes have witnessed.

273. How the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear,

274. the dead are raised to life, the poor have the Gospel preached to them.

275. Blessed is the man who does not lose confidence in me.

276. What did you go out into the desert to see?

277. A reed swayed by the wind?

278. If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes?

279. No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.

280. So why then did you go out? To see a prophet?

281. Yes, and something more than a prophet.

282. This is the man of whom it was written:

283. "I am sending before you that angel of mine who is to prepare the way."

284. God has raised up no greater son of woman than John the Baptist.

285. Yet to be least in the kingdom of heaven is to be greater than he.

286. Ever since John the Baptist's time

287. the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,

288. and violent people have been seizing it.

289. All the prophets and the Law before John's time

290. spoke only of things that were to come.

291. If you are willing to accept it,

292. he is that Elijah whose coming was prophesied.

293. As for this generation, to what shall I compare it?

294. It is like children sitting in the marketplaces

295. who call out to their companions,

296. "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance.

297. "We sang a dirge, and you did not mourn."

298. John would not eat or drink, and they say he is possessed.

299. The Son of Man came, ate and drank

300. and they call him a glutton, friend of publicans and sinners.

301. But wisdom is proved right by her actions.

302. Woe to you, cities where I did miracles and you have not repented.

303. If Tyre and Sidon had witnessed such miracles as I have done in you,

304. they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago.

305. I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgement day than you.

306. And you, Capernaum, do you hope to be lifted to heaven?

307. You shall fall low as hell.

308. Can this be the Son of David?

309. It is only through the power of Beelzebub that he casts devils out.

310. He who is not with me, is against me.

311. And he who doesn't gather with me, scatters.

312. There is pardon for all the other sins and blasphemies of men,

313. but not for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

314. Master, may we see a sign from you?

315. Wicked and unfaithful generation,

316. the only sign that will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah.

317. Jonah was three days and nights in the belly of the sea-beast.

318. The Son of Man will be three days and nights in the earth.

319. The men of Nineveh will condemn this generation on judgement day

320. for they did penance to Jonah,

321. and now one greater than Jonah is here.

322. The queen of the south will condemn this generation

323. for she came from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon's wisdom.

324. And, behold, one greater than Solomon is here.

325. Your mother and your brothers are outside, they want to speak to you.

326. When an evil spirit leaves a person

327. it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.

328. Then it says, "I will return to my house from which I came."

329. And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.

330. So then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself,

331. and they all enter in and live there

332. and the last state of that person is worse than the first.

333. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.

334. Your mother and brothers are here.

335. Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?

336. Here are my mother and brothers!

337. If anyone does the will of my Father in heaven

338. he is my brother, and sister, and mother.

339. How did he come by this wisdom, and these miraculous powers?

340. Isn't his mother Mary

341. and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

342. And his sisters live near us, don't they?

343. Where then did he get all these things?

344. Isn't he just the carpenter's son?

345. A prophet is not without honour, unless in his country and in his house.

346. Master, what shall I do to win eternal life?

347. Why do you ask me about what is good?

348. There is only one who is good.

349. If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.

350. Which ones?

351. Do not murder, do not commit adultery,

352. do not steal, do not bear false witness,

353. honour your father and mother, and love your neighbour as yourself.

354. All these I have kept. What do I still lack?

355. If you want to be perfect,

356. go, sell your possessions and give to the poor

357. and you will have treasure in heaven.

358. Then come, follow me.

359. Truly, I say to you,

360. it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

361. It is easier for a camel to pass through a needle's eye

362. than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

363. Christ, bless our children.

364. Leave the Lord in peace.

365. Let the children be, do not keep them from me.

366. The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.

367. Your dance has pleased me; I will grant whatever you wish.

368. Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

369. It is granted.

370. Let us withdraw into desert country, to be alone.

371. Follow me over to the other side.

372. Lord, give me leave to go home and bury my father.

373. Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.

374. Master, I will follow you wherever you are going.

375. Foxes have holes and birds their nesting places.

376. The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

377. Howl, O gate.

378. Cry, O city.

379. Thou, whole Palestine, art dissolved,

380. for a smoke shall come from the north.

381. In their streets they shall gird themselves with sackcloth.

382. On the tops of their houses, and in their streets

383. everyone shall weep abundantly.

384. Who do men say is the Son of Man?

385. Some say John the Baptist.

386. Others Elijah.

387. Others Jeremy.

388. Or one of the prophets.

389. What do you say that I am?

390. You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

391. Blessed are you, Simon, son of John.

392. It is not flesh and blood, it is my Father that has revealed this to you.

393. And I tell you that you are Peter.

394. And it is upon this rock that I will build my church

395. and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

396. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

397. Whatever you imprison on earth God will imprison in heaven.

398. And whatever you set free on earth shall be set free in heaven.

399. You are to tell no one that I am the Christ.

400. I must go up to Jerusalem

401. and suffer many things at the hands of the chief priests, elders and scribes

402. and then be put to death.

403. Never, Lord. This shall never happen to you.

404. Back, Satan! For these thoughts of yours are men's, not God's.

405. If anyone wants to be my follower,

406. let him renounce self, take up his cross, and follow me.

407. The Son of Man is to be given into the hands of men.

408. They will put him to death,

409. and on the third day, he will rise again.

410. Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

411. Unless you become like little children again

412. you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

413. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

414. And he who welcomes such a child, welcomes me.

415. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin

416. it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck

417. and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

418. Woe to the world because it tempts people to sin.

419. Temptations are inevitable,

420. but woe to the man who causes someone to sin.

421. If your hand or foot causes you to sin

422. cut it off and cast it away from you.

423. Better to enter into life crippled or lame

424. than to have hands and feet when you are cast into eternal fire.

425. What do you yourselves think?

426. If a man has a hundred sheep and one has strayed

427. does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to look for the stray?

428. If, by good fortune, he finds it,

429. he rejoices more over that one than over those that did not stray.

430. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing

431. that any of these little ones should be lost.

432. Lord, if my brother commits an offence against me

433. how many times must I forgive him?

434. Up to seven times?

435. No, not just seven times, but seventy times seven!

436. Now we are going up to Jerusalem.

437. The Son of Man will be given up

438. into the hands of the chief priests and the scribes

439. who will condemn him to death

440. and then turn him over to the Gentiles

441. to be flogged and crucified.

442. But on the third day he will rise again.

443. Go to the village ahead of you,

444. and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her.

445. Go and bring them to me.

446. If anyone asks

447. say that the Lord needs them, and he will let you have them.

448. It is Jesus, Son of David.

449. It is written, "My house shall be called a house of prayer."

450. But you have turned it into a den of thieves.

451. Hosanna! Hosanna to the Son of David!

452. - Do you hear what they are saying? - Yes.

453. Have you never read the words:

454. "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise"?

455. May you never bear fruit again.

456. How has it withered so quickly?

457. Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt,

458. you will not only do what was done to the fig tree,

459. but even if you say to this mountain, "Be taken up and thrown into the sea",

460. it will happen.

461. Every gift you ask for in prayer will be granted.

462. By what authority do you do these things?

463. Who gave you this authority?

464. I too have a question to ask.

465. If you can answer me I will tell you what is my authority.

466. Did John's baptism come from heaven or from men?

467. If we tell him it was from heaven,

468. he will ask: "Then why did you not believe him?"

469. If we say from men, then we'll be mobbed

470. because the people believe John was a prophet.

471. We cannot tell.

472. Then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things.

473. Tell me what you think: a man had two sons

474. and he asked the first to work in his vineyard that day.

475. The son refused, but relented afterwards and went.

476. He asked his second son to work in the vineyard.

477. The son said he would go, but did not go.

478. Which of the two did his father's will?

479. The second.

480. Truly, I say to you

481. the publicans and harlots are further on the road to God's kingdom than you

482. because John came to you following all due observance,

483. and you did not believe him.

484. The publicans believed him, and the harlots

485. but even when you saw that

486. you would not relent, and believe him.

487. Listen to another parable.

488. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard.

489. He walled it, dug a wine-press,

490. and built a watchtower.

491. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went on a journey.

492. At harvest time he sent his servants to collect his share of the crop.

493. But the vine-growers grabbed his servants,

494. they beat one, killed one, and stoned a third.

495. Then he sent more servants than the first time,

496. and the vine-growers treated them the same way.

497. In the end he sent his son, thinking he would be respected.

498. But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said to each other,

499. "This is the heir. Let's kill him and take his inheritance."

500. So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

501. Now when the owner of the vineyard returns,

502. what will he do to those vine-growers?

503. He will bring those wretches to a wretched end

504. and will rent out the vineyard to others who will pay him his due.

505. Have you never read in the scriptures:

506. "The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone -

507. "this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes"?

508. I tell you the kingdom of God will be taken away from you

509. and given to a nation that will exhibit the power of it.

510. When a man falls against the stone, he will break his bones.

511. When it falls on him, it will scatter him like chaff.

512. Many are called, but few are chosen.

513. Master, we know well that you are sincere

514. and teach in all sincerity the ways of God.

515. You hold no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man.

516. Tell us, then, is it right to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?

517. Hypocrites, why test me thus?

518. Show me the coin used for paying the tax.

519. Whose likeness, whose name is inscribed on it?

520. Caesar.

521. Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.

522. Master, master...

523. Moses told us that if a man leaves no children when he dies,

524. his brother should marry the widow

525. and have a child who will carry on the brother's name.

526. We had seven brothers in our country, of whom the first died

527. a married man without issue, bequeathing his wife to the second.

528. He died, bequeathing her to the third

529. and finally she had been every brother's wife, dying last of all.

530. When the dead rise again, which brother will be her husband?

531. You do not understand the scriptures, or what is the power of God.

532. When the dead rise again, there is no marrying or giving in marriage.

533. They are as the angels in heaven are.

534. Have you never read what God himself said of the resurrection?

535. I am the God of Abraham, of Jacob, and of Isaac.

536. Yet it is of living men, not dead men, that he is God.

537. Master, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?

538. Love the Lord your God with all your heart

539. with all your soul and with all your mind.

540. This is the greatest of the commandments, and the first.

541. And the second is like it.

542. Love your neighbour as yourself.

543. The Law of Moses is interpreted by the scribes and the Pharisees.

544. Do what they tell you, observe what they tell you

545. but do not imitate their actions,

546. because they do not practise what they preach.

547. They tie up heavy loads that are hard to bear

548. and put them on men's shoulders,

549. but they're not willing to lift a finger to ease the burden.

550. Everything they do is done for men to see.

551. They make their headbands large and the tassels on their shawls long.

552. They love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the synagogue

553. and respectful greetings in the market places,

554. and they love being called Rabbi by men.

555. But don't you be called "Rabbi",

556. because you have only one Master and you are all brothers.

557. And do not call anyone on earth your "father",

558. for you have just one Father and he is in heaven.

559. Nor are you to be called teachers; you have one teacher, the Christ.

560. The greatest of all is to be the servant of all.

561. The man who exalts himself will be humbled.

562. The man who humbles himself will be exalted.

563. Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites

564. that shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in men's faces.

565. You will not enter, nor let others enter when they would.

566. Woe upon you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.

567. You travel over land and sea to win a single convert

568. and when he becomes one,
