226. So we decided to pack our bags and head west.

227. To Hollywood. I wanted to be in the movie business.

230. - So we landed jobs at Columbia Pictures driving trucks. - Huh.

231. And after a few years, we had enough saved

232. to buy our own little piece of showbiz.

233. A beautiful little movie theater in Glendora.

234. Which would have been swell. Except for the timing.

235. It was September of '29.

236. One minute we're screening the Gold Diggers of Broadway,

237. and next it's, "Brother can you spare a dime?"

238. I couldn't.

239. Nobody in town was making any money,

240. except for one fella, Wylie Reid.

241. Had a hot dog and root beer stand.

242. Hey people still gotta eat, right?

243. So we decide to open up our own little stand,

244. hot dogs and orange juice, in Arcadia.

245. And it went okay. I mean we weren't going gang-busters.

246. There just weren't enough people in Arcadia.

247. Meanwhile, one town over is San Bernardino

248. and we want to relocate, but we got no money for a new stand.

249. And that's when my brother here

250. comes up with one of his brilliant ideas. Tell him, Dick.

251. Well...

252. He says, why don't we move the stand we've got.

253. Put it on a truck. Genius, right.

254. Only there's one little problem.

255. On the road between the two towns, there's an overpass.

256. And the building won't clear.

257. Now I figure that's it, we're done for.

258. But then Dick says, "Why don't we saw the building in half?"

259. Saw it in half...

260. Come on.

261. So we've moved the restaurant we're setting up shop.

262. But now we want to do a few tweaks,

263. because now it's 1940.

264. And drive-ins are all the rage.

265. I mean, they are the hottest thing going,

266. and I say, "Dick we gotta get in on this."

267. And Dick says... - "Okay".

268. And two months later we open for business...

269. McDonald's Famous Barbecue.

270. 27 item menu.

271. Uniformed waitresses bring your food right to the car.

272. And it goes gang-busters. We're going great guns.

273. But then sales start to level off.

274. The drive-in model as we learned,

275. - has a few built-in problems. - Tell me about it.

276. For starters, there's the customer issue.

277. Drive-in's tend to attract, shall we say,

278. a less than desirable clientele.

279. - Teenagers. - Hot rodders and hooligans.

280. Juvenile delinquents in blue jeans.

281. And then there's the service.

282. It takes forever and a day for your food to arrive.

283. - And when it finally does... - It's usually wrong.

284. Yeah. The Carhops are too busy dodging gropes to remember

285. that you wanted strawberry phosphate, not cherry.

286. Well, that's if they remember at all.

287. And then, there's the expenses.

288. The huge payroll.

289. Due to the large staff required.

290. Dishes constantly getting broken or stolen.

291. Tremendous overhead.

292. So one day, Dick has a realization.

293. He sees that the bulk of our sales

294. are only in three items.

295. Hamburgers. French fries. Soft drinks.

296. - Eighty-seven percent.

297. So we say to ourselves let's focus on what sells.

298. And that's exactly what we do.

299. Brisket gone. Tamales gone.

300. But we don't stop there. We look at everything.

301. - What else don't we need? - Turns out quite a lot.

302. Carhops.

303. Walk up to a window, get the food yourself.

304. - Dishes... - All paper packaging.

305. - Disposable. - Cigarette machines, jukeboxes.

306. Drive out the riff-raff.

307. Creating a family friendly environment here.

308. - But that's not enough. - All right.

309. See, our whole lives we'd piggybacked

310. off other people's ideas.

311. We wanted something that wasn't just different.

312. It had to be better. It needed to be ours.

313. And that's what brings us to the biggest cut of all.

316. Not 30 minutes. Mecca.

317. We looked at each other one night.

345. when we're really doing it?

346. They do it over and over, hashing it out.

347. Choreographing it like some crazy burger ballet.

360. We've rearranged the fry situation.

361. So now it's stage left. The deep fryer stage right.

363. - Come on, guys. - We're pretty tied up here.

385. We take the layout to a builder,

386. custom build the kitchen to our exact specs.

389. It's totally revolutionary.

390. - And a complete disaster. - Why?

391. Opening day, cars pull up onto the lot

392. and they start honking immediately

393. because no carhop comes up.

394. You place your order!

395. We try to explain to them the walk-up window.

396. And they are bewildered. Now they're furious.

397. What do you mean I gotta get out of my car?

398. Most of them just cuss us out and drive off.

399. And the few that stay are mad as heck

400. because they're eating off paper

401. and they gotta discard their own trash.

402. - Why? - You're doing great.

403. Yeah, we won't be coming out to the car,

404. but you can come on up.

405. Welcome to McDonald's!

406. We may have underestimated the learning curve.

407. So by five o'clock Dick is calculating how much it's going

408. to cost to go back to drive-in.

409. But I am not ready to throw in the towel.

410. I go back to our old Hollywood days,

411. I think to myself, we gotta go big with this.

412. We gotta put on a show.

413. So I say, "Dick, I wanna throw a grand re-opening.

414. A gala premiere that would put Louis B. Mayer to shame."

415. So we rent a bunch of spotlights.

416. Same ones we used to haul around in the Columbia days.

417. We get sparklers, a juggler for the kiddies.

418. It is an event, people show up in droves.

419. - And then... The flies.

420. They must've been drawn by all the lights.

421. Millions of them. It was like a scene outta Exodus.

422. The Pharaoh would've released the Israelites.

423. Total disaster.

424. Now it is towel time.

425. The next day, Dick and I meet up

426. to discuss going back to the old format.

427. And as we're talking there's a knock at the service window.

428. I tell him we're closed.

429. - We're closed. - But he looks so cute.

430. Hang on. Hang on. What would you like, Son?

431. Can I buy a bag of burgers from you?

432. - Three? - Yes, please.

433. And I feel bad, so I fire up the grill

434. and I make him a batch.

435. There you are.

436. As he's walking away from the service window a car pulls up.

437. And then another.

440. - Hello, welcome to McDonald's. Hello there.

441. Pretty soon there's a line around the block.

442. - The word has spread. - And it's off to the races.

443. And we are an overnight sensation

444. 30 years in the making.

445. So that's our story.

449. It's too damn good for just one location.

450. There should be McDonald's everywhere.
