17. So that shot of that world cost us a lot of money, but I think it was worth it.

22. So, we were shooting here in Oyster Bay, Long Island, right?

23. Yeah, we shot the whole movie on Long Island.

24. For Florida, for Orlando, which is fun.

25. We'll show you some dying palm trees later.

27. You're living outdoors, skin cancer is a real concern.

28. This actor is the guy from, what's that web series?

29. Katja Blichfeld used to do casting for it.

30. Yeah. It's High Maintenance.

35. Was this the first scene we shot?

36. I think this was one of the very first ones, wasn't it?

40. Well, one of the first things we shot was the scene we didn't use.

41. - The salon. - Of me cutting hair in the salon.

42. Yes, right. We changed the introduction.

43. 'Cause I was too awesome in it.

44. - It was too much. - People were losing their minds.

45. It imbalanced the movie too much.

46. Sent people into seizures.

47. Into comedy seizures.

48. You were on a roll.

49. Well, give me back the sunscreen so I can give it to an actual homeless...

50. This actress was really funny.

51. I like her.

52. I'm the manager here.

53. Her elevator eyes.

54. - She really gives it to you. - Checking you out.

55. This dog. This dog had one eye.

57. And his eye was actually eaten by the other dog that you'll see later.

65. This is based very loosely on some of Paula Pell's journals

66. and some of her family elements.

67. It's the reason it's set in Florida.

68. You'll see lots of... You can point out lots of things, Paula,

69. that are based on your parents.

70. My dad has that same head of hair.

71. But he is not married to Barbra Streisand.

72. I feel like, if these were our parents,

73. that I would look more like my mom, and Tina would look more like her dad.

74. That's what I try to tell myself.

75. My long nose is a Jim Brolin nose.

76. And that beautiful, thick hair.

80. I spent most of the time just gently prodding Dianne

81. to tell Hannah and Her Sisters stories.

82. - That's true. - Which she did.

83. - Did she do it? - She did.

84. She talked about the very famous scene in the restaurant

85. where all the sisters are talking,

86. and she remembered the name of the Steadicam operator who shot that.

87. - My gosh. - I know. And...

88. They're both so lovely, you want them to be your parents.

89. - Yeah, they were. - Yup.

90. She's always been my absolute favorite.

91. And when I met her, the day I met her,

92. we went to go shoot, and she said, "Well, I'll see you out on the ice."

93. And I was like, wow.

94. Remember years ago, Paula, one time, you and I were walking and we saw her

95. on the Upper West Side, and we stone cold followed her.

96. Yes! We followed her for so many blocks on the Upper West Side.

97. - Didn't say hi. - No.

98. - Just followed her. - We followed her, and...

99. So, yeah, this is one of the scenes that we reshot.

100. So, Kate was introduced in a different way the first time.

101. But I really wanted to get you with your daughter.

102. 'Cause it just made the connection make so much more sense.

103. - A lot of information to lay out. - Yeah.

104. The wonderful Chris Parnell, Christopher Parnell.

105. - Old buddy. - Christopher James Parnell?

106. - Sure. - I believe?

107. Christopher Parnell.

108. Who we worked with for many years at Saturday Night Live.

109. The most well-prepared actor ever for any rehearsal at SNL.

110. Really?

111. - He always knew his shit. - Call him the ice man.

112. He always knew it.

113. That's little Madison Davenport, who is, of course,

114. the child I had with Jane Krakowski.

115. - She looks so much like Jane. - She does.

116. In a Weird Science turn, she had a baby with Jane.

117. My gosh, you're right, she does.

118. Also, 'cause weirdly Madison is naturally blonde

119. and dyes her hair brown.

120. I didn't know that.

121. Yeah, isn't that insane? Why would you want to do that?

122. - That's weird... - She spent a lot of money.

123. because I'm naturally golden and not gray.

124. - Yeah. Go on. - Well, she wanted bangs,

125. but then afterwards...

126. It's so good that we ended up reshooting to have this scene,

127. because you see how much they have dysfunction,

128. - and yet love each other. - And love. Yeah, that was the key.

129. The original scene was the two of them on the phone,

130. and you just didn't feel the connection.

131. Yeah, it was hard to process.

132. We could use more eye-to-eye contact scenes in this world.

133. Touching.

134. 'Cause everyone talks through their phones, right, guys?

136. I just fell asleep in my Jazzy,

137. and I just woke up and wanted to add something.

138. I kept those pants, you guys. And I still wear them.

139. I just knocked over my TV tray full of pharmaceuticals.

141. For a second, Betty, I thought you were wearing a shrug.

142. But you're wearing an apron over.

143. Which is the new thing. People are doing a lot of aprons now.

144. Yeah.

145. This year it's about fresh skin, thin legs, and aprons.

147. And there she is.

148. - Shit. - There is Miss Paula Pell.

149. I don't think I've ever felt sexier.

150. Holding a waxing strip like that, you mean?

151. I don't think I even have a bra on, that's why my...

152. My 32 is hanging down to a 41.

153. - That dog was added later, too. - Yeah.

154. That was a third reshoot to just add an insert of the dog.

156. That gag bit I'm doing, my friends and I used to do a lot.

157. See, those are not my legs.

158. We used to do that gag bit a lot when we went to go have sushi.

159. We'd be like, "Do you want the quail egg? You guys want a quail egg?"

161. Right, that dog we added later.

162. We had a dog on the day of the shoot, and it looked really gnarly

163. and was making a lot of noise, so I sent it home.

164. - It was really big. - It was really big, yeah.

165. Jason likes to send a dog home once a week.

166. - I do. - Brutal.

167. - Like a power move. - Yeah.

168. It just keeps people on their toes.

169. You're like, "Bring him in. Now get him out of here."

170. That's what you like to do.

171. All the way.

172. Now, you were dating this guy at the time, right, Amy?

173. That's right.

174. Every single male in this film that I do a scene with, I'm dating.

175. Yeah.

176. What I love about this scene with Amy is that she is establishing

177. her over-caretaking and meshed-in-everyone's-lives thing.

178. Those eyebrows up like, "No, you do need that lotion in there.

179. - "You do need it." - He was a delight, too, that actor.

180. He was this incredibly classically trained actor.

181. - Yes. - And I was talking to him like,

182. "She's going to be inching towards your..."

183. And he was like, "She can do whatever she wants."

184. - He was so nice. - He was ready.

185. He kept feeling like you weren't going high enough up under that thing.

186. - Yeah. - Oh, my God.

187. It was a very, very high set.

188. I mean, he got a pretty nice gig.

189. He got a full massage with cream and lotion.

190. My only regret is that I wish I'd worn this hat more.

191. - The hat looks good. - That hat looks so cute.

192. Hat and shorts looked so foxy on you.

193. So, this is more Long Island doubling as Orlando,

194. bringing in our palm trees.

195. This is actually an office building as our airport.

196. Like a shot of tequila?

197. Yeah, a shot.

198. - Daniel Breaker. - Yeah. So funny.

199. Who's my friend. Such a funny guy.

200. - God dang it, Daniel Breaker is so funny. - He's a great guy.

201. I had a reporter, Mike Ryan, point out to me that James Brolin was in Pee-wee Herman.

202. - What? - Yeah, that's right.

203. 'Cause he's the guy who takes the part.

204. - Yes! - He plays him in the movie.

205. He said, "You did the Pee-wee Herman joke because of James?"

206. I was like, "No, we just improvised that."

207. Now that's why we did it.

208. Now that's the new reason.

209. And, Paula, this is based on your sister. The way you preen and look at each other.

210. My sister and I and my nieces preen each other like apes,

211. when they see each other after a long time,

212. and it's like, looking, grabbing things,

213. taking jewelry off and putting it on the other person.

214. Just very intrusive, physically.

215. She's having such a great summer, but I think she's getting homesick.

216. This was the first scene that we shot.

217. You're right, yeah.

218. Of the whole movie, 'cause we were in that green screen and we had to learn that song.

219. Yes, this is the first scene we shot together.

220. - Yeah. - Yeah. Together, right.

221. Yeah, you did your hair one, and then you guys shot this one.

222. And Tina and I were practicing our lyrics, Heart and Soul.

223. Because it's a complicated lyric.

224. I've been having a lot of fun.

225. Teaching Polenta how to smell diabetes, that was one of my favorite jokes.

226. Paula would write jokes...

227. - Was that a Post-it? - That was a Post-it.

228. So, during the shoot, we would do scripted versions of the scenes,

229. and then Paula would write Post-its with extra jokes,

230. and we would deliver them to the actors, and it was fun to watch them unfold.

231. That's one of my favorites.

232. This is good green screen.

233. That was not my hand, by the way.

234. I know my hands very well.

235. You were like, "I don't have time for that nonsense."

236. You were like, "I refuse to do that."

237. Later we're like, "That's not my face in that scene."

238. You only do vaginal inserts.

239. Never a hand or foot insert.

240. - Johnny Legs! - Johnny Legs!

241. Johnny Legs, J. Legs, immediately hilarious from the first day of shooting.

242. There's one thing he improvised here that made me so happy on the day, 'cause...

243. I can't remember if you gave it to me to say, "I heard you died, "

244. or if we were improvising.

245. To say, "I heard... Somebody told me you died."

246. And he just immediately, immediately he was like...

247. "You're the second person who told me that."

248. - That was him. - Such good improv.

249. And then Tina said, "You should check it out."

250. Just that he was right there with, "Somebody else said that, too."

251. He immediately did sunglass work that made me laugh the entire shoot.

252. He was putting them backwards on his head.

253. He wore 'em backwards on his head.

254. He was so much fun.

255. - He was so fun. - He was a sweet pie.

256. And his shirt says, "Killin' it."

257. Killin' it.

258. He also always kept everybody up and was great with the background performers.

259. He's so talented and sweet.

260. He can work a gum and a sunglass.

261. I love Maura straddling, liking the attention,

262. but yet grossed out at the same time, in this scene.

265. You know, I got some stock...

267. - Was that him or you? - That was me.

270. Wow, the Ellis sisters, man.

271. There was a very light thing in that bag, and I was pretending like it was heavy.

272. That's the bulk of film acting, pretending bags are heavy.

273. Also, a lot of people don't know they give you these fake paper bags.

274. Actually, that's a fake bag that doesn't crinkle as much as a real bag.

275. - Interesting. - They're weird. They're almost like cloth.

276. - Yeah, they look like paper bags. - So it won't throw off sound.

277. I never knew that.

278. - Movie magic. - More sunglasses, he can work 'em.

279. You're working some sunglasses too there, actually.

280. That's such a good joke, "Underpass weathered."

282. Friends and family discount at this place?

285. So here comes all of Amy's stunt driving.

286. That made my legs feel weird.

289. The party just got back to O-Town!

290. Yeah, I love this part.

292. It's cicada season, so keep your mouth shut.

295. That was cut out of The Fast and Furious. That was Tina and...

296. This is some of the only footage that we actually shot in Orlando.

297. So we did an aerial unit in Orlando for these shots.

298. - Areola unit. - Areola unit.

299. My sister and I, when we see each other,

300. she'll pick me up at the airport a lot when I go to Orlando,

301. and one time we went to a Walmart very late at night

302. when she came for Christmas,

303. and we laughed so hard in the Walmart, we peed our pants,

304. and then she had to buy new shorts.

305. - In the Walmart. - In the Walmart.

306. By the way, that happens 15 times a day in Walmart.

307. People are buying the clothes there

308. because they have defecated or urinated into them.

309. The wonderful Isaac Barinholtz.

310. - Ike. - Eisenhower Barinholtz.

311. - Dwight D. Eisenhower Barinholtz. - Iko, Iko ah nay.

312. I call Ike "the Wall of Man."

313. We all just hung around Ike because there was a lot of estrogen on set.

314. - Yeah. - Jason and Ike were the only guys,

315. and they were both tall and very built.

316. I am generally 18% straight, and he bumped me up to 25 for sure.

318. I knew Ike when he was a bar back at Second City.

319. - Did you really? - Yeah.

320. - Yeah, he was 18. - I love it.

321. He was 18 years old, yeah.

322. He's so great.

323. And he went to UCB, did he?

324. Yeah, he was at ImprovOlympic in Chicago,

325. where Tina and I were performing, and Ike was...

326. He's not that much younger than us, but he was...

327. But we were young, too, I guess,

328. and back then the difference between 18 and 23 was a world of difference.

338. Our first shot of our house, which is in Dix Hills.

339. - Which is a real house. - Which is a real exterior of the house.

340. Although we planted all these palm trees and greenery.

341. It's a little close for my taste, Jason,

342. - but I can see why... - I know.

343. Well, I wanted to be deep in your soul there.

344. We're gonna win a Naturally Award for this.

345. - A Natchie. - I love those little pants on you, Amy.

356. So now we're on our actual, built set, which was on a big soundstage.

357. So the whole house was built on the stage, including the backyard and the pool,

360. When I watched the test audiences for this,

361. when she walks in and it cuts over to the empty house,

362. the crowd would go...

363. - I love when stuff like that happens. - We were so thrilled.

364. Because we tried to set that up so clearly.

367. Where's the fucking manatee lamp I made?

368. It was so fun.

369. Tina and I both got to watch this movie with our moms, our parents,

370. and it's interesting to watch it with them because...

372. I still have my childhood home.

374. And my dad has a house full of clocks.

375. So that's where that comes from. So he really loved that.

384. Right, we shot this in the summer, so we got cooking some days.

385. Yeah, Mom and Dad, eat a pyramid of dicks.

386. Sit on a bunch of pinecones.

387. If I see Mom in one of those one-chair beauty shops,

388. I will full-out BJ a hot curling iron.

389. Rowdy seniors and booze by a lake? That's a recipe for disaster.

390. If they have shower chairs at this granny farm,

391. I will slit my throat and put it on YouTube.

393. Why didn't you tell me that you sold the house?

440. - I can't. - When I was a young kid,

441. I used to love to, when we would go out to eat, I would go to the restaurant,

442. and come back and rate it and tell my parents.

445. what I liked about it, what I didn't like about it, like a review.

450. I always wanted to do the rooms side by side, like they'd knocked the wall out,

451. so we could have a big room, but it was his idea to do this shot.

452. It's funny, 'cause I have two daughters now. They're 10 and four.

453. And we've talked about maybe just knocking the wall out, because...

454. - Really? - ... they won't leave each other alone.

455. - Just so they can be together. - Yeah.

456. So this room is filled with...

457. We asked both of you what was in your childhood rooms,

458. so we could populate this set with all the stuff.

459. - But, Tina, you were saying... - It was hard for me because...

461. some of the stuff from your childhood room didn't really fit this character.

462. 'Cause I was more like Maura. We both were more like Maura, so...

463. I had hot metal band guys on my side of the room

464. that, to this day, I'm sexually frightened of.

474. This movie was inspired by my journals from when I was 13.

475. My sister's had really interesting romance in it,

484. and Tina and I would often take naps, try to fall asleep in that room.

491. It was a little difficult, 'cause I'm older than these women,

492. and so I had to write it with the '80s in mind, which was my college years.

494. We didn't have the footage yet, so I'm not doing the right exercise.

495. I was doing it from muscle memory,

496. 'cause I remember doing Jane Fonda all the time.

497. That was one of the exercises I remember.

498. I was very impressed with the...

499. The boobs staying in that Catholic uniform.

500. Yeah, we're gonna get some nice side-boob there.

501. And I love how you're smelling that Strawberry Shortcake head.

502. - So specific. - It did still smell.

503. I like the jump up on the bed, too. It's just, "Look at this. I'm..."

507. We were trying to be tan for this.

508. And so we would get spray-tanned at least once a week,

509. 'cause we were supposed to be people in Florida.

511. This was shot very late at night on a night shoot,

512. and I came in to see them in the tub, and I burst into tears.

513. - Yeah. - Because of how our bodies...

514. My sister...

515. My sister and I... 'Cause they had both shit the tub.

516. But my sister and I used to do a thing called "Mermaid's Pond, "

517. and we did a whole variety show in the tub called "Mermaid's Pond."

518. And we had a drive-through where we would make sandwiches out of the soap.

519. I was having fun.

520. That is when...

521. There was a line in an earlier draft that fell out, which I missed, which was...

522. They used to say, "This tub is so small. I can't believe we used to do shows in here."

523. Yeah. Shows.

524. Which I'm sure, Amy, you have this with the boys,

525. but they can run around.

526. They can swim laps in a bathtub.

527. We used to do a circular dance where we'd each keep switching sides.

528. The house is sold.

529. - Give Maya Rudolph a dollar. - Stolen move.

530. I hate it when you make me the bummer.

531. My life is super shitty right now. I need to feel...

532. This was fun 'cause we put on clothes that, later on, we were going to walk outside and...

533. We shot the other scene first,

534. and then we had to think about how were we gonna wake up,

535. and how crazy were we gonna look?

536. Get in that look that we already shot in, yeah.

537. I always wanted this, inspired by the scene in Big,

538. when they make a wish on Zoltar, and so that...

539. This got a big laugh.

540. Yeah, people were ahead of it. They saw that thing turn on and they...

541. People must have had them, and must have remembered those night lights.

542. So they go to bed as adults, and then they wake up as girls, really.

543. This scene makes me laugh, but it also makes me cry a little bit, guys.

544. I'm not gonna lie. It's just so sweet.

545. - I love, "I really am so much fun." - Yeah.

546. Anyone who says... It's like when people say, "I'm really classy."

547. No, if you're saying it, it's not true.

549. Also, we just spent so much time on the development of this dynamic of

550. they're opposites, but they still both wanna have fun for different reasons.

1601. I don't think there's as many movies out that keep those scenes as much,

2262. the next day there were a lot of discussions about the sinkhole.

2263. And it became a huge thing in the movie.

2264. So you have to be careful what you write in.

2265. Especially when it's a big ol' hole.

2267. The stunt of the falling in was so impressive.

2380. and it looked like a Rocket pop.
