1. The ocean
is a mysterious world.Copy !req
2. One that land dwellers
can only begin to imagine.Copy !req
3. Of course, you think you know
what lies beneath the surface.Copy !req
4. Ah, but the sea creatures
who live there,Copy !req
5. well, even the ones
you have imagined,Copy !req
6. you've imagined them wrong.Copy !req
7. Take the mythical,
mighty giant kraken.Copy !req
8. Bloodthirsty monster,Copy !req
9. sinker of ships,
drowner of sailors.Copy !req
10. That's what you people think.Copy !req
11. You see, in real life,
krakens are noble protectors.Copy !req
12. The sea will always need
a kraken,Copy !req
13. and a kraken will always
answer the call.Copy !req
14. Ruby-doo.Copy !req
15. Hey, Margot.Copy !req
16. I am dying of suspense.Copy !req
17. - (yawns)
- What did your mom say?Copy !req
18. Well, I chickened out
last night,Copy !req
19. but I'm going to ask her now,
right now, this second.Copy !req
20. Did you do
the confidence-buildingCopy !req
21. exercise I taught you?Copy !req
22. I did something even better.Copy !req
23. Oh, hey. (clears throat)Copy !req
24. Junior prom is the sacred rite
of every human teenager.Copy !req
25. As a kraken who is barely
pulling offCopy !req
26. this whole human thing,Copy !req
27. I need to be there
so that I can blend in.Copy !req
28. And, as a proud mathlete,Copy !req
29. I know that to find
a potential solution,Copy !req
30. I have to evaluate the problem.Copy !req
31. Now, I know the rules.Copy !req
32. Our family is not allowed
in the ocean, ever.Copy !req
33. For any reason.Copy !req
34. And I love rules.Copy !req
35. I do. I really, really do.Copy !req
36. But the prom boat
is on the water,Copy !req
37. - not in the water.
- (thunder crashing)Copy !req
38. "What if there's a storm?"
you might ask.Copy !req
39. Well, I've analyzed
weather trend data,Copy !req
40. and my trusty friend,
the Internet,Copy !req
41. has assured me that it will be
smooth sailing on prom night.Copy !req
42. And lastly, this is the captain
of said prom boat.Copy !req
43. Look into those eyes.Copy !req
44. Tell me he hasn't seen it all.Copy !req
45. I trust him with my life,
and so should you.Copy !req
46. And that is why I,
Ruby Gillman,Copy !req
47. should go to prom. Thank you.Copy !req
48. Please, please, please,
please, please!Copy !req
49. Strong presentation.Copy !req
50. I like the energy,
but it's still a no, honey.Copy !req
51. But, Mom, evidence,
science, Internet.Copy !req
52. Trust me, Ruby,
I know what's best for you.Copy !req
53. And what's best
is to always stay on land.Copy !req
54. That's why we moved here.Copy !req
55. It's much safer for us.Copy !req
56. Sorry, Tadpole, Mom's right.Copy !req
57. Sam, breakfast!Copy !req
58. Hey, didn't you say
that prom was a postbolognal...Copy !req
59. Postcolonial
patriarchal construct. It is.Copy !req
60. But we would go as a group.Copy !req
61. As a form of protest.Copy !req
62. Wow. So brave.Copy !req
63. What do you think?
I had these printed
for my big launch party.Copy !req
64. I think I'm in love.Copy !req
65. - Blech.
- Do you still
need me to be there?Copy !req
66. Yes. This is a make-or-break
moment.Copy !req
67. I'm selling
an entire development.Copy !req
68. But, Mom, you're...Copy !req
69. Agatha Gillman,Copy !req
70. and I slay the competition.Copy !req
71. She got us our dream home,
and I'm not asking how.Copy !req
72. Well, I just want
to show potential buyersCopy !req
73. what a happy Oceanside family
looks like.Copy !req
74. I'll be closing my shop for
the day so I can man the grill.Copy !req
75. From chill man to grill man.Copy !req
76. Ooh, Arthur,
you should think aboutCopy !req
77. hiring someone to help you.Copy !req
78. Business has been booming
since you started Bottled Up.Copy !req
79. Hey there.Copy !req
80. Welcome back to Bottled Up.Copy !req
81. Now, let's hoist those sails.Copy !req
82. Magic.Copy !req
83. Wow, you two are quite
the power couple.Copy !req
84. You think that's great?Copy !req
85. You're looking at
the undefeated dodgeball champ.Copy !req
86. He's a legend. Ooh.Copy !req
87. Yeah, yeah.
You guys are all crushing it.Copy !req
88. Oh, Ruby,
don't sell yourself short.Copy !req
89. You're amazing at math.Copy !req
90. I am the reason
Connor's passing algebra.Copy !req
91. Oh, Connor.Copy !req
92. - So dreamy.
- Sam.Copy !req
93. Ow. You're the one
in love with him.Copy !req
94. - Hey, hey. Stop.
You each landed one.
- (groans)Copy !req
95. Marine Biologist Quarterly?Copy !req
96. Oh, Ruby.
You're still reading this trash?Copy !req
97. Humans don't know everything
about the ocean.Copy !req
98. Mom, there's a whole world
down thereCopy !req
99. that I have never seen.Copy !req
100. Jellyfish, plankton,
coral reefs...Copy !req
101. But what else lives there?Copy !req
102. I know. Monsters.Copy !req
103. And those monsters
want to hurt krakens like us.Copy !req
104. This is where we belong.
Oceanside is our home.Copy !req
105. Then help me fit in
by letting me go to prom.Copy !req
106. Ruby, the answer is no.Copy !req
107. - Time to go.
- (Ruby groans)Copy !req
108. - Mom.
- Gillman dishes to Gillman.Copy !req
109. The fadeaway at the buzzer,Copy !req
110. - and it's good!
- Yeah.Copy !req
111. Woo-hoo!Copy !req
112. Limb up, everyone.Copy !req
113. Let's all have
a very human day.Copy !req
114. Does it bother you guys that we
lie to everyone all the time?Copy !req
115. Oh, we're not lying.
We're just omitting.Copy !req
116. Yeah, okay.Copy !req
117. And remember...Copy !req
118. If anyone asks,
we're from Canada.Copy !req
119. - (people exclaiming)
- Whoa, what's happening?Copy !req
120. - Are we supposed to be stopped?
- Is our tour over?Copy !req
121. Apologies for the unplanned
interruption, folks.Copy !req
122. Well, look what the tide
dragged in, Davey.Copy !req
123. Ahoy, Mr.--
Captain Gordon Lighthouse, sir.Copy !req
124. Aren't you one
of them Gillmans?Copy !req
125. Guilty.Copy !req
126. Just kidding. Not guilty.
Totally normal.Copy !req
127. - Is she blue?
- I'm from Canada... eh.Copy !req
128. - Oh...
- (tourists murmuring)Copy !req
129. That totally makes sense.Copy !req
130. I've got my eye on you,
Gillman girl.Copy !req
131. And my other eye, too!Copy !req
132. (over speaker): Our tour begins
where 15 years ago,Copy !req
133. I swear I saw the monstrous
giant kraken.Copy !req
134. And to your right, Oceanside's
best saltwater taffy.Copy !req
135. - Ask for the Gordon Lighthouse
discount.
- (quacking ringtone)Copy !req
136. Hey, guys.Copy !req
137. - Yo. -Greetings.
- So, how did it go?Copy !req
138. Yes. I'm dying to find out.Copy !req
139. Same. I've been stress-gaming.Copy !req
140. Well, it's official.
Mom won't let me go to prom.Copy !req
141. And I know it's not
what we wanted,Copy !req
142. but we still have plan B,Copy !req
143. our very cool anti-prom party.Copy !req
144. And what is the most
liberated food out there?Copy !req
145. Guys, I'm talking fondue.Copy !req
146. Ruby, um, I'm just gonna
come right out and say it.Copy !req
147. Kayla asked me to the prom.Copy !req
148. - Oh.
- And, uh,Copy !req
149. I said carpe diem. (giggling)Copy !req
150. Aka, I said yes.Copy !req
151. - What?
- I said yes.Copy !req
152. No, I got that. Loud and clear.Copy !req
153. Okay, Margot has torn our heartsCopy !req
154. into a million tiny pieces,Copy !req
155. and that's fine.Copy !req
156. More fondue for the rest of us,
right, guys?Copy !req
157. Yeah, uh,Copy !req
158. once Margot was going
with Kayla,Copy !req
159. Trevin said, "Oh, well,
should we just go together?"Copy !req
160. And I agreed.Copy !req
161. So Trevin and I are going
to the prom together.Copy !req
162. As friends.Copy !req
163. (laughs nervously):
Yeah, only as friends.Copy !req
164. - (clears throat)
What?Copy !req
165. What?Copy !req
166. Sorry, Ruby.Copy !req
167. We promised to always
stick together.Copy !req
168. Does squad solidarity
mean nothing to you?Copy !req
169. Well, of course it does.Copy !req
170. Which is why
you should come with us.
You'll be on a boat.Copy !req
171. You'll be completely safe.Copy !req
172. Unless there's
a tragic accident.Copy !req
173. - Bliss, no catastrophizing.
- Sorry.Copy !req
174. You guys know my mom,
and that is why we made plan B.Copy !req
175. Margot, just bring Kayla
to our anti-prom party.Copy !req
176. We will watch bad movies.Copy !req
177. We'll dip Swiss.Copy !req
178. Enough with the fondue!Copy !req
179. We eat a lot of cheese.Copy !req
180. Wheels of it.Copy !req
181. Think about how many events
we've missedCopy !req
182. in squad solidarityCopy !req
183. because of your mom's
irrational anti-ocean rule.Copy !req
184. I guess a few.Copy !req
185. What? There was the field trip
to the submarine museum.Copy !req
186. The school beach day.Copy !req
187. - All-county surf contest.
The Grunion Fun Run.Copy !req
188. The Oceanside
Festival of the Bard.Copy !req
189. My grandmother's
beach birthday party.Copy !req
190. Kayla's beach birthday party!Copy !req
191. Any birthday party but Bliss's.Copy !req
192. You're always welcome
at the graveyard.Copy !req
193. But this isn't just any party.Copy !req
194. This is prom.Copy !req
195. And I really want
to be a part of it.Copy !req
196. We all do.Copy !req
197. Yeah. No, I get it.Copy !req
198. You guys should go without me.Copy !req
199. It's one thing for my mom
to ruin my life.Copy !req
200. She doesn't have to ruin yours.Copy !req
201. Uh, what if you don't tell her?Copy !req
202. Gasp of exclamation!Copy !req
203. Trevin's right.
Your mom doesn't have to know.Copy !req
204. Deception. I'm on board.Copy !req
205. Come on, Ruby. Do it.Copy !req
206. Do it.Copy !req
207. I want to,
but if my mom finds out, uh...Copy !req
208. Oh, life is not
a dress rehearsal.Copy !req
209. It's time for you to go big
and go to prom.Copy !req
210. Okay. Okay, okay, okay.Copy !req
211. (sighs)
You're right.Copy !req
212. Okay, I'll do it.Copy !req
213. - I'll go to prom.
- Yes!Copy !req
214. And I'm gonna ask Connor.Copy !req
215. Connor?Copy !req
216. Okay, that's a...
that's a big swing there.Copy !req
217. Whoo. But we are here for it.Copy !req
218. Step one, you're going
to need a prom-posal.Copy !req
219. Blue-sky with me, people.
Any ideas?Copy !req
220. Maybe I can ask him with
something epic,Copy !req
221. like an advanced
quadratic equation.Copy !req
222. And when I solve it,
the answer is...Copy !req
223. prom.Copy !req
224. Ruby, my sweet, wide-eyed,
dumbest smart person ever,Copy !req
225. you cannot ask Connor to prom
with homework.Copy !req
226. But look how it graphs.
It's cool.Copy !req
227. It is not cool.Copy !req
228. A good prom-posal is art.Copy !req
229. Showmanship is the name
of the gameCopy !req
230. in this hormone-fueled
benchmark of adolescence.Copy !req
231. A ritual that embodies
the ultimateCopy !req
232. in high risk, high reward.Copy !req
233. and one shot at persuading your
Romeo that you are his Juliet.Copy !req
234. With stakes this high,
the only option is to go big.Copy !req
235. MAN (over P.A.): Everyone,
don't forget to RSVP for prom,Copy !req
236. the most important day
of your lives.Copy !req
237. I almost asked Connor to prom
with homework.Copy !req
238. We got you, Ruby.
There are so many other options.Copy !req
239. Here, this is the first draft,
but with this scriptCopy !req
240. and my favorite prop
from clown school...Copy !req
241. Mm, I don't know. Do you have
something a little smaller?Copy !req
242. Tone down the drama, you say?Copy !req
243. - I know just the thing.
- What's that?Copy !req
244. A commercial-grade
DJ confetti cannon.Copy !req
245. You just ask Connor to prom,
push this button,Copy !req
246. and the confetti will rain down
like closing night on Broadway.Copy !req
247. Uh, maybe I abandon this wholeCopy !req
248. "ask your dream guy
to prom" thing.Copy !req
249. Connor.Copy !req
250. Connor, would you do me
the honorCopy !req
251. of going to human prom with me?Copy !req
252. Oh, Ruby, yes.Copy !req
253. Oh, you've made me the happiest
guy on dry land, Ruby.Copy !req
254. - Connor.
- Ruby.Copy !req
255. - Ruby?
- (song slows, stops)Copy !req
256. Hi.Copy !req
257. Connor's here.Copy !req
258. Uh, yeah. Connor's here.Copy !req
259. Oh! Oh. Hi. Hi, hi, hi.Copy !req
260. (laughs):
Uh...Copy !req
261. we're still on for our tutoring
sesh later, right?Copy !req
262. Oh. (laughs)Copy !req
263. Oh, yeah, Connor.
We are on like polygons.Copy !req
264. (laughs):
All right. Team math.Copy !req
265. I'll see you later.Copy !req
266. You know it.
Anything for my alge-bae.Copy !req
267. - Your what now?
- I mean bro.Copy !req
268. A-Alge-bro.Copy !req
269. Like you're my brother.Copy !req
270. You're my math brother.Copy !req
271. You know, I think I liked
the first one better.Copy !req
272. Give me that confetti cannon.Copy !req
273. Yes!Copy !req
274. - (hyperventilating)
You gotta practice.Copy !req
275. The trick is to reject
the concept of gravity.Copy !req
276. It doesn't exist.
It's not real.Copy !req
277. All right. Peace out.Copy !req
278. Yo, hit me up later.Copy !req
279. - Hey, Connor.
- Hey, Ruby.Copy !req
280. What's up?Copy !req
281. Um, hey.Copy !req
282. So, I was wondering,Copy !req
283. did you see, like,
all those prom-posalsCopy !req
284. around school this morning?Copy !req
285. - Yes.
- Hmm.Copy !req
286. They kind of weird me out.Copy !req
287. Just ask someone.Copy !req
288. It doesn't have to be
this big proposal.Copy !req
289. It's crazy, right?Copy !req
290. Oh, yeah, I hear that.Copy !req
291. And besides,
prom is a postcolonialCopy !req
292. - patriarchal construct.
- Patriarchal construct.Copy !req
293. - Exactly.
- Exactly.Copy !req
294. It could be fun to go
with the right person, though.Copy !req
295. Oh. (laughs nervously)Copy !req
296. Yeah. Totally.Copy !req
297. - Ruby... Oh.
- Connor... Oh, sorry.Copy !req
298. - Ruby... Oh, hey.
- Connor... Oh, you go.Copy !req
299. - (laughing): No, you go.
- No. You go.Copy !req
300. Yeah, no, you go. I go.Copy !req
301. Wait. Okay, no. But seriously,
what-what did you want to say?Copy !req
302. Um, Connor, I...Copy !req
303. I...Copy !req
304. - ... think I'm gonna be sick.
- Whoa.Copy !req
305. Hey. Are-are you okay?Copy !req
306. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.Copy !req
307. I get seasick sometimes
when I'm next to the ocean.Copy !req
308. It's genetic.Copy !req
309. You know, my sisters do this
grounding technique thing.Copy !req
310. Ooh. Whoops. Wait, what's this?Copy !req
311. - Hah. Oh. That?
Never seen that before.
- Whoa.Copy !req
312. - Is this a kaleidoscope?
- Maybe put it down. -(beeps)Copy !req
313. - (gasps)
It's party time!Copy !req
314. - Connor!
- (splashing)Copy !req
315. Connor, are you okay?Copy !req
316. Connor, grab this!Copy !req
317. Son of an anglerfish!Copy !req
318. (whimpers)
Connor!Copy !req
319. Okay. Okay. Okay, okay,
okay, okay, okay.Copy !req
320. (sighs) What just happened?Copy !req
321. (gasps)
Connor.Copy !req
322. The new girl
saved Connor.
- Connor?Copy !req
323. She's a hero.
- Connor.Copy !req
324. Ruby, there you are.Copy !req
325. You missed the story
of the year, girl.Copy !req
326. - Connor almost drowned.
I didn't mean to.Copy !req
327. I mean I-I didn't do it.Copy !req
328. (laughs nervously):
Gosh, that's crazy.Copy !req
329. And surprising.Copy !req
330. Because it definitely didn't
have anything to do with me.Copy !req
331. Are you feeling all right?Copy !req
332. - Why are you wet?
- (gasps)Copy !req
333. - Connor. Are you okay?
- (coughing)Copy !req
334. Yeah. It was crazy.Copy !req
335. I just remember there was smoke
and glitter.Copy !req
336. And then the next thing I knew,Copy !req
337. I was saved by the new girl.Copy !req
338. The new girl?Copy !req
339. The new girl.Copy !req
340. - Thank you. Thank you.
Whoo!Copy !req
341. New girl.Copy !req
342. She's going to say something.Copy !req
343. Shh. -(crowd quiets)
- Picture this,Copy !req
344. me, stunning but approachable,Copy !req
345. - on my first day of school.
- (giggling)Copy !req
346. I'm lost and confused,Copy !req
347. struggling to find
my first class.Copy !req
348. When suddenly— (gasps)--Copy !req
349. I spot little mister skater boy
here barely above water.Copy !req
350. - I'm just lucky that...
- Oh.Copy !req
351. Shush, shush. Ooh. My story.Copy !req
352. Now, I'm not much of a swimmer,
but in that moment,Copy !req
353. I remembered what my mother
always told me:Copy !req
354. "You are gorgeous."Copy !req
355. Also, "Big risk, big reward.Copy !req
356. Always go big."Copy !req
357. And what is bigger
than saving a life?Copy !req
358. Yes, queen. Get it.Copy !req
359. I love you so much.Copy !req
360. Love you, too, rando.Copy !req
361. She pointed at me. I'm Rando.Copy !req
362. Oh, no. What's happening?Copy !req
363. - Watch it.
- Ah. Excuse me.Copy !req
364. Wait.Copy !req
365. We haven't met.Copy !req
366. I'm Chelsea,
Chelsea Van Der Zee.Copy !req
367. - It's Dutch. Kusjes!
So exotic.Copy !req
368. I love you.Copy !req
369. - And you are?
- I'm, um...Copy !req
370. I'm Ruby Gillman.Copy !req
371. It's Canadian... eh.Copy !req
372. Okay, maybe it's the whole
"don't look at me" vibe,Copy !req
373. but there's something different
about you.Copy !req
374. I-I really gotta go now.Copy !req
375. Uh, are you good?
What's wrong with her?Copy !req
376. Yeah, you might need
to lie down for a little bit.Copy !req
377. Yeah, that's awkward.Copy !req
378. What's her deal?Copy !req
379. Is she gonna barf?Copy !req
380. - Freaking out.
- (whimpering)Copy !req
381. Are you okay?Copy !req
382. You really look like
you've been through something.Copy !req
383. Yeah. I really got to go. Now.Copy !req
384. MAN (over P.A.):
All right, everyone.Copy !req
385. Show's over.
Let's get back to class.Copy !req
386. Welcome to your new home,Copy !req
387. if I may be so bold.Copy !req
388. - Ooh.
- This is incredible.Copy !req
389. Oh, you've picked a great place
to raise a kid.Copy !req
390. It's so safe here in Oceanside.Copy !req
391. Moving my family here was
the best decision I ever made.Copy !req
392. Doug actually grew up here.Copy !req
393. We're moving back so that
we can be closer to his folks
when the little one comes.Copy !req
394. Hello, free babysitting.Copy !req
395. How nice.Copy !req
396. Just be careful
they don't tell youCopy !req
397. how you should live your life
and raise your children.Copy !req
398. I mean, it'll be so nice
to have family nearby.Copy !req
399. You're very lucky.
(chuckles)Copy !req
400. Oh, why am I glowing?Copy !req
401. Glowing is not good.Copy !req
402. I will never go into
the ocean again.Copy !req
403. Lesson learned.Copy !req
404. Call Mom.Copy !req
405. Video call Connor.Copy !req
406. What? I didn't say that.
Call Mom.Copy !req
407. - Ruby, where'd you go?
- (yelps)Copy !req
408. - Whoa. Hey.
- (Connor coughing)Copy !req
409. (whispering):
End call, end call, end call.Copy !req
410. - Wait, I wanted
to ask you some...
- I'm going through a tunnel.Copy !req
411. Call Mom.Copy !req
412. - (phone beeps)
- No, I can't call Mom.Copy !req
