66. And the Blue Angels, they would fly over

67. my housing project.

68. We lived in the crash zone,

69. so we had the best view.

70. You couldn't tell me that life was not amazing.

71. And I loved music.

72. Like, everybody loves music, but I'm realizing

73. I had a different kind of relationship with it.

74. Like, it was—

75. literally was mesmerizing to me.

76. I didn't even know that I was mesmerized.

77. I just thought that's what all Black kids did.

78. I thought we all just stared into the speaker like...

80. I was seeing colors.

109. the congregating place for anybody

112. You have Timbaland, who's known as DJ Timmy Tim.

113. We all kind of knew each other from school.

114. Yeah, I knew Timbaland.

115. I knew Timbaland 'cause we were in class together,

116. and he was cool with Missy.

117. And that's how I met Missy, through Tim.

118. At the time, we weren't thinking

119. we were going to be artists.

120. We just loved doing music.

121. In Virginia, we've been saying for years

122. there's something in the water.

123. They always say there's something in the water,

124. but I think it's just Virginia itself.

125. But I wasn't the best student.

126. I found school difficult, you know?

127. You go from being in sixth grade,

128. where you only really had two teachers,

129. but seventh grade was like

130. you had seven different teachers.

131. It was just too overwhelming.

134. I have, like, anxiety about it

135. and refuse to go back.

136. So, I was in seventh grade twice.

137. The teacher contacted my mom and said,

138. "Look, he's got enough credit to pass."

139. And my mom was like, "No, he needs to...

140. he needs to do it again."

141. The boy is smart. He's brilliant.

142. But he only did enough to get by.

143. Do you feel like you fit in as a kid?

145. I was detached.

146. And more in dreamland all the time,

147. because oftentimes that's all I had, was my imagination.

179. And those were my drumsticks.

180. She saw that in me, and that's when, in the seventh grade,

181. she got me a snare drum.

182. But she started me on my path.

183. My grandmother was the one that was like, "Listen..."

184. When you go back to school, you should take music.

185. And that's when I met Chad.

186. Chad understood colors in music,

187. and we bonded on that.

188. Both of them was kind of different.

189. They was like little nerds.

190. Chad was always kind of quiet.

191. I mean, it's true.

193. But to see the two of them

194. do music together,

195. it's like they read each other's minds.

196. We were just being ourselves

197. and were just-just having fun, you know?

206. We skipped so much school.

331. And the engineer would just give me the dirtiest look.

337. That's where I learned discipline.

338. And a lot of times, Pharrell would give me tracks,

342. The thing that raised my eyebrows was

343. Pharrell leaving home late at night.

344. And I'm thinking, "This guy is wasting his time."

345. This one night,

346. I just— I needed help on this record...

347. because I didn't know how to really rap.

351. And I was like, "Really?"

352. - He was like... - Yes.

353. This is a big task.

354. This record cannot come out until I get the proper rap.

358. And then I mimicked what he did.

359. - And he was like... - Nah, it's pretty simple.

362. And one day he came home,

364. But, I mean, I blew it in like two weeks.

368. So I would go up to Teddy week after week

369. and just sort of question him, like...

371. He said I wasn't ready.

372. I was, like, really at my wits' end.

373. I thought I might have to get out of that deal with Teddy.

374. So I talked to my pastor about it.

375. And I remember being so confused.

376. Look, in Virginia, he's the only guy here.

377. Like, what's— How is this gonna happen?

378. Listen.

379. If you're standing at the bottom of a mountain,

380. can you see the other side?

381. No, you can't.

382. But does that mean there's no other side?

383. The other side of that is your life leveling up.

389. with a beat in his head.

390. We would tell ourselves, "We can do this."

394. Music was just coming out of me.

398. Creatively, I'm going in there.

399. I'm just reaching into oblivion,

401. and we don't know what the hell we gonna bring back.

404. For, you know, like five years,

406. I was so ambitious.

407. It's all I cared about was, like, getting on.

414. Definitely thought it was time to go back to school.

417. All it just takes is the right opportunity to do our music,

420. So I called this A&R guy, Kenny Ortiz.

421. One of his interns would always answer the phone.

422. That was Rob Walker.

424. You know, the first few times,

425. it was kind of like, you know...

426. Kenny's not here.

427. He's busy.

428. Because he literally called every single day.

429. And then it got to the point

430. where he wasn't calling to see where Kenny was.

431. He was just calling to say, "What's up?"

432. - What's up, man? - Hey, man.

433. What's going on? Like, what's happening?

434. We were like phone friends, like...

435. Oh, that wasn't from you?

436. They almost made...

437. There was a connection there.

438. And I finally met him.

439. And I was like, "Oh, wow, these guys look like somebody."

440. Oh, what's up, man?

441. Finally nice to, like, put a face with a name, man.

442. Hey. I want to play you this music.

443. And I'm, like, immediately blown away.

444. Like, blown away. And I was like, "Holy..."

445. Wow. Like, this is great.

469. a full-fledged conversation as we're performing.

470. In Air Force 1s, I'm strictly 13.

471. 12 and a half won't work, man.

472. Pharrell gets on the desk, and I'm like...

474. Yo, he has to see how hard I'm willing to go.

475. He was like this little brother that you wanted

477. I had to have a talk with Pharrell.

479. we're all living with our parents.

490. I chose to look at it the wrong way,

523. I took a risk with these two kids from Virginia

525. but when you put our sound together, it's magnificent.

537. and all the DJs start playing the record.

540. But everyone was a little skeptical

647. At that time, we just wrote songs as a band.

648. But I remember he played us the track for "Hella Good."

652. The band really was kind of hesitant.

653. We've never done a collaboration like this before.
