Phase IV (1974)

1. That spring, we were all watching the events of space

2. and wondering what the final effect would be.

3. Astronomers argued over theory

4. while engineers got pretty excited about variables

5. and magnetic fields.

6. Mystics predicted earthquakes

7. and the end of life as we knew it.

8. When the effect came

9. it was almost unnoticed

10. because it happened to such a small

11. and insignificant form of life.

12. One biologist, an English man, Ernest Hubbs

13. saw something, got nervous and started investigating.

14. While I was playing around with number theory at the university.

15. Hubbs was already on to something.

16. Ordinary ants of different species

17. were doing things ants don't do.

18. Meeting, communicating.

19. Apparently making decisions.

20. By summer the rest of the world had moved on to other things

21. but Hubbs kept making notes.

22. While the threat grew.

24. he kept most of it to himself.

25. So when I got into it, I didn't know a damn thing.
