Network (1976)

1. This story is about Howard Beale, the news anchorman on UBS TV.

2. In his time, Howard Beale had been a mandarin of television,

3. the grand old man of news, with a HUT rating of 16 and a 28 audience share.

4. In 1969, however, his fortunes began to decline.

5. He fell to a 22 share. The following year his wife died

6. and he was left a childless widower with an eight rating and a 12 share.

7. He became morose and isolated, began to drink heavily,

8. and on September 22nd 1975 he was fired, effective in two weeks.

9. The news was broken to him by Max Schumacher,

10. who was the president of the news division at UBS.

11. The two old friends got properly pissed.

12. I was at CBS with Ed Murrow in 1951.

13. Must have been 1950 then. I was NBC, uh, associate producer.

14. Morning news. I was just a kid, 26 years old.

15. Anyway…

16. anyway, they were building the lower level of the George Washington Bridge.

17. We were doing a remote from there…

18. and nobody told me!

19. A minute after 7am I get a call.

20. "Where the hell are you? You're supposed to be at the George Washington Bridge."

21. I jump outta bed, throw my raincoat over my pyjamas. I run downstairs.

22. I run out in the street, hail a cab,

23. and I say to the cabbie "Take me to the middle of the George Washington Bridge."

24. And the cabbie turns around and he says…

25. he says "Don't do it, buddy!"

26. "You're a young man. You got your whole life ahead of you!"

27. Didn't I ever tell you that one before?

28. I'm gonna kill myself.

29. Oh, shit, Howard.

31. right in the middle of the seven o'clock news.

61. The first attempt on President Ford's life was 18 days ago,

62. and again yesterday in San Francisco. In spite of the two attempts,

109. Howard Beale interrupted his programme to announce he was going to kill himself.

228. Point one - the division producing the lowest rate of return

229. has been the news division,

230. with its $98-million budget and its average annual deficit of 32 million.

231. Historically news divisions are expected to lose money,

232. but to our minds this philosophy is a wanton fiscal affront to be resisted.

233. The new plan calls for local news to be transferred to owned stations divisions.

234. News radio would be transferred to the UBS radio division,

235. and in effect the news division would be reduced from an independent division

236. to a department accountable to network.

462. I suspect CCA will be upset at Hackett's presumptuousness.

463. Certainly, Mr Jensen will.

464. So I'm going to let Hackett have his head for a while.

475. The initial response to the new Howard Beale show was not auspicatory.
