15. The Salazar curse.

16. The story didn't begin here.

17. It started a long ways away,

18. down south of the border in Mexico.

19. Maybe, you've heard of Don Pablo Salazar.

20. A rich old man.

21. Raised a private army, trying to start his own revolution.

22. But he ran afoul of the government.

23. The government had hunted down the old don and his whole family.

24. But they hadn't managed to grab the family treasure, yet.

25. Only one of the Salazars left was young Luis,

26. the old don's son.

27. He and an American Insurance man named Breen Mathews

28. were trying to get the Salazar treasure out of Mexico.

29. The government had other ideas.

30. Hmm, we're kind of lucky.

31. There's a barn over there, Luis.

32. Let's see if we can make it.

33. Take it easy. Easy now.

34. That's it.

35. It is the Salazar curse.

36. The what?

37. The Salazar curse.

38. Placed on my father's fortune by an Indian sorcerer.

39. Yeah, when he stole that fortune from that Indian tribe?

40. The medicine man swore there would be a curse on the gold,

41. until it was returned to his people.

42. Mmm-hmm. The curse seems to be working.

43. It has destroyed the Salazars.

44. Don't talk anymore.

45. But I must, before I die...

46. I must have you promise to deliver the Salazar fortune to the rightful heir.

47. Well, it seems to me that

48. the rightful heirs would be the Indians your father stole it from.

49. I swore an oath to my father,

50. that his fortune would not leave the family.

51. But you're the last of the Salazar.

52. There is a cousin of my father,

53. a Teresa Morales in San Francisco.

54. Teresa Morales.

55. Promise you will fulfill your company's contract

56. and deliver the Salazar fortune.

57. But, hey, I... Promise, before...

61. So now, Breen Mathews was stuck.

62. Stuck with a promise to a dead man,

63. and a fortune in gold and jewels.

64. But there was more in the Salazar chest than riches.

65. There was an old Indian's curse.

66. A few days later, Breen crossed the border into the States.

67. He was headed for Frisco and coincidentally, Topaz.

68. And that's where we come into the story.

69. What kind of a town was Topaz?

70. Well, let's put it this way,

71. if there ever was a town that didn't need another curse,

72. Topaz was that town.

73. You see, we already had our quota.

74. For instance, well, uh,

75. like, you take our Judge Cole, "The Hanging Judge."

76. He was the best thing that ever happened to the rope business.

77. He'd given Topaz more stretched necks than a herd of giraffes.

78. Any last words, son?

79. You call yourself a judge.

80. Who are you to order me hanged?

81. Who do you think you are to call me guilty?

82. Quite simple, son.

83. The way I figure it, you're at least 50% guilty,

84. if you come before me.

85. So all I have to do is add 1%.

86. Anything else, son?

87. Hang him.

88. Hyah!

89. Yup.

90. The Hanging Judge was only one of the curses we had to live with.

91. The other was the boss of the saloon, Joe Barnum.

92. He was my boss too,

93. and the real boss of Topaz.

94. Funny thing, how Barnum held onto the saloon.

95. He'd sold it a half a dozen times,

96. on the installment plan.

97. Every time, the new owner disappeared,

98. or the judge would hang him,

99. and Barnum would get the saloon back.

100. Just one funny coincidence after another.

101. You don't really expect to sell

102. any of that Chinese rock juice, do you, Wilson?

103. You know, that stuff you got there, that nobody likes?

104. Probably not, Shakey.

105. But the boss man don't believe in giving it away.

107. Came from France. Paid a lot of money for it.

143. reclaim the place again, when the new owners

144. got killed, but like I said, it's nothing, nothing special.

150. What happened to the meeting of the town council?

151. Well, I'm trying to get 'em together, Judge.

154. When I was Sheriff here, I did my duty.

155. And you tell those infernal, backsliding councilman

156. if they refuse to do their duty,

252. had some strange ideas after the civil war.

253. You know, a lot of those rebels are doing bad down in Texas

254. and headed down south.

255. The old don started recruiting men into his own private army.

256. Had ideas of becoming president, I reckon.

257. Revolution?

258. Yeah, we don't get much news out this far.

259. I supposed you could call it that.

260. It didn't get very far.

261. The old don wound up in front of a firing squad.

262. His son Luis Salazar hired my company to get the jewels out of Mexico.

263. He didn't last very long either.

264. Now it's my job to find the rightful heir to the treasure.

265. Now all that fortune is here in my cell.

266. And probably the fewer people that know about it the better. For all of us.

317. One of those fellows said that the jewels in there

318. was worth close to a million dollars.
