4. Hi!

5. Oh!

6. Donald, Jimmy's here.

7. - What? - It's Jim!

8. Come here. Let me look at you! Oh!

9. I'm kind of dehydrated.

10. I'd like a glass of water, if you don't mind.

11. - Okay. - What's all that stuff?

12. We missed you so much at Christmas, Jimmy.

13. You back now?

14. It is so good to see you, honey.

15. Mom misses you so much!

16. - (Jim weeping) - Jimmy?

17. Honey, are you okay?

18. Jim?

19. Jim? Are you okay?

20. What in hell?

21. Oh!

22. Jimmy's come home to surprise us.

23. What's wrong with him?

24. He says he's dehydrated.

25. Dehydrated? Give him some water.

26. Okay, okay.

27. Hi, Jimbo.

28. How ya been?

29. Here you go.

30. - Honey? - (Jim whimpers)

31. - I brought you some clean towels. - Okay.

32. Thanks.

33. Oh, let's see.

34. - Oh, honey, that's cold. - It's fine. I'm fine.

35. Mom sure is happy to see you.

36. Yeah, me too, Mom.

37. You call so little, I...

38. I worry about my boy all alone in the big city.

39. - I'm not a boy, Mom. - Yes, you are.

40. You're a pretty boy. You're my pretty boy.

41. Coming up.

42. A four-song block of your favorite soft

43. and light rock favorites. Here at Light 100.

44. Come on. come into the light.

45. - Is something wrong, Dad? - No.

46. This food is great, Mom.

47. Nothin's wrong. I was just thinkin' about your dogs.

48. My dogs?

49. Yeah, it's what your mother told me you were doin' in New York...

50. walkin' dogs. Didn't you tell me that, Sally?

51. I think he does.

52. They don't need walking anymore?

53. I'm not plannin' on going back to New York.

54. What are you planning?

55. I'm not sure.

56. Your mom's short a guy in shipping.

57. Oh, he doesn't wanna work with his mother.

58. She's right.

59. What do you want?

60. Good-bye.

61. Bye, Tim.

62. You take your time, sweetie.

63. You 'll figure it out.

64. Not too much time. Boy's nearly 30.

65. He's 27, Donald.

66. Your mom and I started this business

67. - when we were in our 20's. - I was 18, Donald.

68. Lap 196, we just completed 195.

69. 196 is the red flag number with four more to go.

70. - We're one lap away from that. - (ringing continues)

71. Oh, there you are.

72. Where have you been? Your mother's trying to call you all day.

73. (sighs) I was busy.

74. Oh, well, I just wanted to invite you to the girls' game.

75. It's okay; you can't win 'em all. - What game?

76. - Say hello to your uncle. - Hey, girls.

77. Hi, Uncle Jimmy.

78. - What's wrong? - They lost... again.

79. Their team hasn't scored a point all year.

80. - Your brother's their coach. - What's the problem?

81. We suck.

82. Come on, girls. Grandma'll give you some ice cream.

83. You want some peanut butter brickle

84. or just plain old vanilla?

85. - Can I take the van? - Of course.

86. - You need some money? - Sure. I'll fill it up while I'm out.

87. - Tank's full. - All right.

88. - Here you go - Maybe I'll take a little something anyway.

89. This is just the money I make from selling snacks at work.

90. Thanks.

91. No problem.

92. Hey, Jimmy?

93. Jim Roush?

94. Hey.

95. Hey, guys.

96. Look who it is.

97. Dick.

98. Here you go. - Thanks.

99. Hey, could I have a Bud light?

100. - Can I have four more? You got it.

101. Hey, I'm just curious.

102. What, uh...

103. is with all the uniforms?

104. - We're nurses. - That'll be $12.

105. Thanks.

106. Yeah, I lived across from a hospital in Manhattan.

107. Manhattan.

108. New York.

109. Mm-hmm.

110. You ever been?

111. Ah, it's...

112. It's all right.

113. What'd you do there?

114. Walked dogs.

115. I mean, that's what I did for money, but I also write.

116. Oh, yeah. Me, too.

117. Really? Wow.

118. Yeah, just for myself though.

119. Well, uh...

120. I like your audience.

121. You make enough money to live walkin' dogs?

122. Uh, I also worked at an Applebee's part-time.

123. I love Applebee's!

124. Really? My name's Jim.

125. - Anika. - Nice to meet you, Anika.

126. - You want one? - Sure.

127. So you like working in a hospital?

128. Sure.

129. You don't find it too antiseptic?

130. Too cold and clean? Uncomfortable?

131. I think hospital beds are more comfortable than regular beds.

132. Do you have a?

133. Oh, yeah. Maybe.

134. Give it to me.

135. Did you come?

136. All right, we got a minute left in the half.

137. I'm gonna make this easy. Are you listening?

138. Yes, Coach Tim.

139. Okay, don't take a shot unless you're sure you can make it.

140. Take your time. Look for an open shot.

141. But don't shoot it unless you're positive it's gonna go in.

142. Rachel.

143. Don't shoot it at all.

144. All right.

145. One, two, three.

146. Go, Ladders.

147. Go, Heaters.

148. Come on, ref, what are you doin' out there?

149. Shoot it. Come on.

150. Shoot!

151. I'm just miserable anywhere I go.

152. I'm unhappy, too.

153. I just don't know what I'm doing here...

154. on earth, in this life.

155. You know what the answer is?

156. No.

157. (sighs) There is no answer.

158. I mean, as far as the world's concerned,

159. people like me might as well not even exist.

160. I'm really unhappy.

161. I know. I mean, if I were you,

162. I'm not even sure I could do it.

163. Do what?

164. Go on.

165. I mean, I think about ending it all as it is.

166. I can't imagine if I had your life.

167. Why?

168. Well...

169. Divorced with a shit job at a lumberyard

170. after being rejected from the Cromwell police force.

171. You wanted to be in the CIA.

172. Look at how far away you are from everything you wanted to be.

173. You live with Mom and Dad just to cover child support.

174. You make a dollar over minimum wage at 32 years old.

175. I mean, I'm a fuck-up, but you're a goddamn tragedy.

176. Yeah.

177. There's been an accident.

178. Is Tim okay?

179. He's in a coma.

180. How?

181. A car accident.

182. Who hit him?

183. A tree.

184. This isn't your brother's first accident.

185. What do you mean?

186. Oh, Jimmy.

187. Uh... I have to get a drink of water.

188. Does anybody want anything?

189. He's having a hard time as it is.

190. Why you got that plate set there, Sally?

191. Oh, well, I just thought I'd set Tim's place at the table

192. just so he'd know we were thinkin' about him.

193. Jesus Christ, he's not dead.

194. I know. I just...

195. You want some juice, Jimmy? Let me get you some juice.

196. Can you help?

197. I said I'd coach the girls' team.

198. Well, we really could use you at the factory now, too.

199. Your mother's having a real hard time with this.

200. - She's already shorthanded. - Oh.

201. Geez, uh...

202. - Uh, I don't know. - What's to know?

203. You either will or you won't.

204. Well, I guess I'm gonna have to say that I won't.

205. Yes, you will, goddamnit!

206. - Ya hear that, Sally? - What?

207. Jim wants to know if he can come work for you.

208. Oh, no, he doesn't.

209. Yeah, I do, Mom.

210. Oh.

211. Well, of course you can.

212. You know Mom would love your help.

213. You remember your dad's brother, Uncle Stacy?

214. Yeah.

215. Tim? Jim?

216. Uh, Jim.

217. The one not in a coma.

218. He's our little one. Tim is the oldest.

219. Something happen to Tim?

220. Well, he had an accident.

221. Nobody told me.

222. Oh, Don probably didn't want to bother you on your weekend.

223. Um, so...

224. Uncle Stacy's been helpin' us out here at work

225. about a year or so.

226. He's gonna get you started,

227. and I'm gonna go use your daddy's office to call the hospital, okay?

228. Watch my snacks.

229. Yeah.

230. - Sorry about your brother. - Thanks, Stacy.

231. Call me Evil.

232. Evil?

233. So, you, uh...

234. you get high, right?

235. What? No.

236. Yeah, you do.

237. - What makes you think that? - First off, your mother.

238. Gotta be on tranquilizers to deal with a bitch like that.

239. Hey, you gonna pay for that candy bar?

240. You know what you oughta do

241. is you oughta come over my trailer during lunchtime.

242. I got some good shit... fuck you up.

243. Hey, Evil.

244. You got a snack for me?

245. He's cool. He's my nephew.

246. - What do you want? - Let me get ten dollars of Nutty Bar.

247. This'll do ya.

248. All right.

249. All you have to do is get in ten baskets.

250. Then you're free to go home.

251. Starting... now.

252. Hey.

253. Brought you some chips.

254. You think you might wanna wake up soon?

255. The girls need their coach.

256. Also, Dad's making me work for Mom until you snap outta this.

257. Come on.

258. Dumb fuck.

259. Wake up.

260. What are you doing?

261. Oh. Hey.

262. What are you doing?

263. I work here.

264. Have you met my... I mean, this is my brother.

265. - Is he one of your patients? - No, I'm in Pediatrics.

266. Geez, how are you anyway?

267. I'm fine. How's he?

268. Good, good.

269. I mean, he's in a coma.

270. What happened?

271. - Hit a tree. - I'd hate to see the tree.

272. Ha.

273. I bet you were hoping to never see me again.

274. What?

275. No, of course not.

276. What are you doin' later?

277. I'm busy.

278. Okay.

279. I'm free Saturday.

280. Okay.

281. Saturday.

282. - You want my number? - You already gave it to me.

283. - You still have it? - Yeah.

284. What is it again?

285. I'll call you.

286. Whenever you pee,

287. you got to turn it on, then hold it in.

288. Then turn it on and hold it in every few seconds.

289. Like a faucet, so you pee in spurts.

290. (exhales) What's that do?

291. Teaches it control.

292. Dick's like a dog...

293. it can't do anything more than what you teach it to.

294. My cocker spaniel...

295. it can last a full ten minutes

296. before it spewges down the hole.

297. - Ten minutes? - Yeah.

298. There ain't no woman on earth needs longer than that

299. before she gets her scream on.

300. You have a girlfriend, Evil?

301. Nah.

302. I use hookers.

303. It's cheaper.

304. Want a snack?

305. No, thanks.

306. What do you think of that... that weed?

307. It's a little strong.

308. Yeah, I put a little crack in it.

309. What?

310. Come here. You gotta check this out.

311. - Come here. - What?

312. Come on.

313. Dead animal skulls.

314. Wow.

315. Hey...

316. Will you open a checking account for me?

317. - Uh, what? - A checking account.

318. Oh, man, I been banned from banks

319. for, like, the next seven years,

320. and there's a guy down state, he'll sell me a human skull,

321. but he says all I need to do is send him a check.

322. How would it work?

323. You open an account with my money,

324. and then you write a check for me.

325. Why would I wanna do that?

326. I'd let you write checks for yourself.

327. Make up for all those birthdays and graduations I missed.

328. There's four grand in there.

329. All right, thanks, man.

330. When they give you those checkbooks,

331. make sure they don't give you those ones with the kittens and seashells on it.

332. - I hate those things. - Okay.

333. All right? They really piss me off; they're tacky.

334. - I said okay. - All right.

335. Why do you pee like that, Jimmy?

336. Hey, get outta here.

337. Something wrong with your urinary tract?

338. What?

339. Get outta here! Close the door.

340. Oh, Jimmy, do you mind watching the girls

341. while I do a little grocery shopping?

342. Um... I'm sorry. I actually have something to do.

343. Oh. Okay. That's okay.

344. You always left Tim and me alone.

345. Oh?

346. - Can I borrow the van? - Of course, honey.

347. You can, um, just drop me off at the store.

348. Well, uh, I'm actually not goin' that way.

349. Oh, well, never mind.

350. I can take you to the end of the way.

351. No, I'll walk. It'll be good for me.

352. - Thanks, Mom. - Do you need some money?

353. Oh. No. Actually, I'm good.

354. Okay, sweetie.

355. Hey there.

356. Are you our date?

357. Uh...

358. Mom takes me on all her first dates.

359. Well, your mother and I already had our first date.

360. - When? - Last week.

361. The night she was out till 3:00 in the morning?

362. Ready?

363. Why is there a bed set up back here?

364. Oh, uh...

365. - Do you live in this van? - Benjamin.

366. No, I don't live in this van.

367. Wine coolers. Really?

368. What?

369. Mom's a whiskey woman.

370. So where we going?

371. Where would you like to go?

372. Um... there's ice skating at the Glenbrook mall.

373. No.

374. I know somewhere better.

375. Girls...

376. I want you to meet a friend of mine.

377. This is Ben.

378. I thought you guys might want to take him out back

379. to play on the trampoline.

380. You have a trampoline?

381. No, but our neighbors do.

382. Take him, girls.

383. - It's freezing outside. - Wear your coats.

384. You live with your parents?

385. Uh... uh, just temporarily.

386. I'm leaving as soon as my brother recovers.

387. Oh.

388. I sort of came back to have a nervous breakdown

389. but... bastard beat me to it.

390. What's wrong with you?

391. Chronic despair.

392. Hmm.

393. Timber!

394. Hey! What are you kids doing?

395. Jumping.

396. Well, who told you you could jump on our trampoline?

397. Jim.

398. He's my uncle.

399. Well, tell your Uncle Jim that he needs to ask me...

400. He's not my uncle. I hardly know him.

401. He's on a date with my mom right now.

402. - Jim took Mom up to his room. - Okay, that's fine.

403. Just ask the next time.

404. Where's Benjamin's dad?

405. He's around.

406. I mean, he sees Ben every once a month or so,

407. if he remembers.

408. He doesn't have a problem with you dating?

409. Oh, no. He's incredibly jealous.

410. Who are all these people?

411. Uh... they're writers.

412. Oh, yeah?

413. That's Virginia Woolf.

414. Underneath her is Richard Yates; he's one of my favorites.

415. What did he write?

416. Sad stories about sad people with pathetic dreams.

417. When he died, almost all of his books were out of print.

418. That's weird.

419. And of course, there's Poe and Plath and Burroughs.

420. That's a writer named Breece D'J Pancake.

421. Beckett, Dorothy Parker.

422. Big one's Hemingway.

423. Oh, yeah, I read him in high school; he's good.

424. What did you like about him?

425. I think he had a boner for what he did, ya know?

426. Yeah.

427. His stories weren't as stuffy and made-up as others.

428. They were realer.

429. He was a realist.

430. Maybe that's why.

431. He shot himself in the head.

432. - Geez. - So did Pancake.

433. That one threw himself off a bridge.

434. She put her head in an oven,

435. and then that one, that one and that one

436. all drank themselves to death.

437. Is Ben's dad gonna try and hurt me?

438. You? No.

439. But you said that he was insanely jealous.

440. He wouldn't be jealous of you.

441. - Why not? - He just wouldn't.

442. And besides, we're not dating.

443. What are we doing?

444. Hey, guys, can you?

445. Do you have any board games?

446. (hiccups) Oh, God.

447. Oh, I brought you some snacks.

448. Thanks.

449. Did you bring any of those Funyuns?

450. Oh, is that what you wanted, honey?

451. No, but I do have some pork rinds.

452. So how you feelin', Tim?

453. Shitty.

454. You're lucky to be alive, boy.

455. I called the girls' mother, and they're gonna be here real soon.

456. - How are they? - Oh, they're good.

457. You know, I told them to make sure and say a prayer for you

458. every single night before they went to bed.

459. - You had to tell them? - Honey, you know what I mean.

460. Jesus Christ, Tim!

461. Donald, he just woke up from a coma.

462. And why was he in a coma in the first place?

463. He had an accident.

464. Is that what happened? He had an accident?

465. Yeah, I lived!

466. Don't you say that! Don't you dare ever say that.

467. You are Mom's baby.

468. You're my big baby.

469. Oh, God!

470. I'm gonna get a drink of water. Do you want anything?

471. No.

472. like a dog. - (Anika laughs)

473. Oh.

474. - Hey. - Hey. I was just lookin' for you.

475. - Really? - Yeah.

476. 'Cause you smell like you were just smoking.

477. Where's Mom and Dad?

478. I asked them to leave.

479. Well, how am I supposed to get home?

480. I don't know. We didn't talk about it.

481. I gotta get back to work.

482. It was nice to meet you, Tim.

483. Please don't hesitate to ring me if you need something.

484. You either, liar.

485. See ya.

486. She's hot!

487. - Ya think? - Yeah.

488. You have sex with her?

489. Um... yeah.

490. That's awesome.

491. (chuckles) Thanks.

492. I meant for me.

493. That means she has no standards.

494. I bet she'd do it with me, too.

495. - Daddy! - Hey! Girls!

496. - Sarah. - Hi, Dad.

497. Where's your mother?

498. She's waiting downstairs.

499. Oh.

500. You okay, Jim?

501. Yeah, I'm just writing.

502. - Did you see your brother tonight? - Uh-huh.

503. He's lookin' better, don't you think?

504. Mm-hmm.

505. I just love talkin' to you, Jim.

506. How was work for you?

507. Good.

508. I know you 'd rather not be there.

509. It's okay.

510. Your brother always refused to work for us.

511. Really?

512. Jim, what do we do to make you kids so unhappy?

513. I don't know.

514. Well, think about it. I mean, be honest.

515. You're a smart, sensitive boy.

516. You must have some opinion.

517. I don't know, Mom.

518. Maybe some people just shouldn't be parents.

519. I mean... it's just a thought.

520. Oh.

521. - Look... - No, I'm fine. I'm all right.

522. I'm just, uh...

523. Uh, I'm tired.

524. All right, good night, pretty boy.

525. Good night.

526. You look cold. Want a ride?

527. On that?

528. Bought it with one of your checks. What do you think?

529. It's great.

530. You can drive.

531. I'm trippin' my head off right now.

532. I just don't understand.

533. Keep movin', lady.

534. Watch your head, ma'am.

535. What the fuck was that about?

536. I don't know.

537. Sally got arrested this morning

538. for using the company's Fed X account to ship drugs.

539. They got proof of her signature on over a dozen packages

540. sent from here.

541. Are you kidding?

542. No, I'm not kidding! Does it sound like I'm kidding?

543. - Maybe. - Well, I'm not.

544. Listen, I'm gonna go down there and explain to these pecker heads

545. that they got the wrong person.

546. But what I need you to do is cover for your mom and me

547. while I'm gone.

548. - Sure. Sure. - No problem, Donnie.

549. Anybody asks what's going on, just play dumb.

550. So who do you think did this?

551. You.

552. Me? I can't believe you would think...

553. Bullshit, Evil. I know it was you.

554. All right. All right, you got me.

555. I mean, how could you be such an idiot?

556. Look, I wrapped every one of those packages

557. in foil, I double-plastic bagged them,

558. and then I put, like a little Big League chew in there... grape.

559. They're sending my mom to prison, Evil.

560. Yeah, I understand... lunderstand that.

561. But you're not gonna rat out your Uncle Stace now, are you?

562. You think I'd let my mother stay locked up for you?

563. I'd be a little nervous about narcin' out a guy who has no money

564. when you just opened up a $4,000 bank account.

565. You fucker!

566. Just be careful because when you point a finger at somebody else,

567. you're pointin' three at yourself and a thumb to the sky.

568. What does that mean?

569. It means...

570. is your piss clean?

571. - What are you doin' here? - Mom brought me.

572. What is she doing here?

573. I didn't know that.

574. There's a lot of things that people don't know about

575. our Central Intelligence Agency.

576. - It sounds so exciting. - It's exciting and it's...

577. the kind of work that you can't help bringing home with you.

578. Oh, hey. Aren't you home a little early?

579. Well, um, something happened at work.

580. What's wrong?

581. I'm sorry.

582. What exactly are you doing here?

583. I thought I'd come help your brother get situated.

584. Did the hospital send you?

585. No.

586. Hey, I'm just doing you a favor.

587. Yeah, I can see what a favor you're doing.

588. Mm-hmm.

589. Hey, you like basketball?

590. No.

591. Ever played before?

592. No.

593. Want to?

594. Okay. Okay, everybody.

595. Uh, this is Ben.

596. Ben, that's Rachel, Sarah, and, um...

597. the rest of the team,

598. so why don't you guys grab a ball and start practicin'?

599. Here, catch.

600. Ow!

601. Sorry.

602. It's one of my favorites.

603. Oh, thanks so much, sweetheart.

604. Oh, Mom is so happy you came down to visit.

605. So what is it about?

606. An impotent man's futile love.

607. Oh!

608. Great!

609. Thank you so much, sweetheart.

610. So... how is it in there?

611. It's not so bad.

612. The women are all very talkative.

613. I'm sorry about this, Mom.

614. Oh, honey, it's not your fault.

615. The police put a seize on our business.

616. They figured the whole place was a drug front.

617. I can't even get into my own company now.

618. They've got padlocks on the doors.

619. You're kidding.

620. There's nothing I can do.

621. Girl's here to see you.

622. Said she's a nurse. Brought a little kid with her.

623. He's sitting right next to you, Dad. His name's Ben.

624. - Oh. Hi, Ben. - Hello.

625. You want to get me another one of these from the fridge, buddy?

626. Okay.

627. You know what? It's been a humbling experience.

628. I feel like, I don't know...

629. - Um, excuse me. - Yeah. Sure, sure, sure.

630. She'll be back.

631. Hi.

632. Don't you work anymore?

633. It's my day off.

634. Because my brother and my father are both in the house,

635. and Ben is just downstairs.

636. - I didn't come for that. - Well, why?

637. I don't know, Jim. I like to help people.

638. Oh.

639. Come on, it's time to go home now.

640. Where's Jim?

641. I don't know. He's up in his room.

642. - Hey, what are you doing? - I'm staying.

643. Ben!

644. the breath of Satan. - (knocking at door)

645. It's the dog breath of the devil.

646. Come in.

647. - Oh, you. - Evil.

648. This is Stacy.

649. Stacy.

650. Yeah?

651. Evil, I gotta talk to you.

652. You wanna get in on this. I still got a half hour left.

653. The police seized my parents' business, Evil.

654. Damn!

655. That's too much.

656. That's... what are you gonna do?

657. What are you gonna do?

658. Come on. There's not a jury in the world that's gonna believe

659. that that woman is sellin' drugs.

660. But they will believe a guy like me does.

661. You do, Evil.

662. See?

663. There's only one thing to do here, Evil,

664. and you know what it is.

665. What? Confess?

666. Then go to jail and man rape for the next five years?

667. You made your own choices.

668. Look, there's $3,000 left in that account.

669. Now, that'll get you pretty far...

670. No. I'm not gonna sell my family out.

671. Look, I'm family, too.

672. - I can't believe you. - Hold on, shithead.

673. That money is in your name.

674. And if you don't give it back to me,

675. then it's like you already accepted it.

676. Make your own choices.

677. Jim?

678. What?

679. It's full.

680. What's full?

681. Jesus Christ, man.

682. Why don't you... get your nurse to do this?

683. I couldn't ask her to do that.

684. That's disgusting.

685. Well, what do you want me to do with it?

686. Clean it.

687. Fuck that.

688. I need something to pee in.

689. Okay, uh...

690. Just do what you want today.

691. I don't know what to tell you.

692. What kind of coach are you?

693. Oh, hey.

694. Your team's not even playing basketball.

695. Well, whatever.

696. You must not think much of your nieces then,

697. or Ben or any of those kids out there.

698. You must not think much of me, either, I guess.

699. Oh, I do.

700. I think you're all great.

701. What?

702. You think I'm great?

703. Well, sure.

704. I think you're great.

705. There's so many fun and cheery people in the world.

706. Don't you think you 'd be better off with one of them?

707. Someone more like yourself?

708. You think I'm fun and cheery?

709. Of course you are.

710. You just can't stop complimenting me, can you?

711. - You're missing my point. - No, I'm not.

712. I'm getting it very clearly.

713. - Who's that? - An anteater.

714. - Really? - Yeah.

715. And I can run faster than an anteater.

716. - And what about that? - That's a cheetah.

717. Can't run faster than a cheetah.

718. And there's an elephant.

719. I can run faster than an elephant.

720. You mean you never, ever run?

721. I just feel stupid when I run.

722. Mom, do I look stupid when I run?

723. No, honey.

724. You wanna come in?

725. It's okay. I don't mind.

726. No, I think I'll just say good night here.

727. Okay.

728. Bye, Ben.

729. Bye.

730. Bye, Anika.

731. Good night, Jim.

732. You could kiss if you want. I don't care.

733. You're kind of apathetic for such a little guy, aren't you?

734. Yeah.

735. Good night, you two.

736. Mom.

737. You're home.

738. Yep.

739. How?

740. Something called bail.

741. One of the girls in prison told me about it.

742. Apparently your father never realized it was an option.

743. Oh.

744. I called a very nice bondsman in Kendallville

745. who put up the money for me.

746. Oh, that's great.

747. Oh, honey, don't touch that. That's for Kiki.

748. Who's Kiki?

749. She's the con that gave me the number for the bondsman.

750. I'm bringin' cobbler to her and all the girls

751. that I made friends with at County.

752. Oh, all those ladies were so nice to me.

753. It's hard to believe they're criminals.

754. - Have you talked to Tim? - Yeah.

755. Same old Tim.

756. What in the world?

757. I need a fork.

758. My fork!

759. Jimmy!

760. Jim!

761. Yoo-hoo.

762. Jimmy, wake up. You have visitors.

763. (groaning) No. Who?

764. Get your ass up, Jim. It's 4:00.

765. Sorry to say "ass" in front of you, Mrs. Roush.

766. Oh, no, that's... It worked.

767. - So hi, Jimmy. - Hi, Mom.

768. Did you have a nice nap?

769. Yep.

770. Your little friend Ben is downstairs helping me make dinner.

771. - Oh, Ben's here? - Uh-huh.

772. We're making goulash.

773. Mmm.

774. Jim's my pretty boy.

775. Okay.

776. I brought you something.

777. What?

778. Don't get too excited. It's not much.

779. What is it?

780. A smile for poor old Hemingway.

781. I don't know. Doesn't look right to me.

782. That's because you're used to seeing it the other way.

783. The other way is true to life.

784. The other way is depressing.

785. - Like I said... - Oh, Jim.

786. You smell nice.

787. Thanks.

788. I like you a lot, Anika.

789. I like you a lot, too.

790. - And so does Ben. - He does?

791. Oh, my God, he totally looks up to you.

792. - Oh, no... - It's true.

793. Ben shouldn't look up to me.

794. - Sure, he should. - No, he shouldn't.

795. Why?

796. I think I might have caused my brother to hurt himself.

797. That's crazy.

798. I told him life was pointless,

799. and I couldn't believe he hadn't killed himself.

800. Oh.

801. So, Aneeka... lunderstand you're a nurse.

802. - Ah, I am, Mrs. Roush. - That's great.

803. I love the work.

804. So where'd you two meet?

805. At a bar.

806. Tim just can't stop sayin' enough nice things about you.

807. Oh. How is Tim? I haven't talked to him today.

808. Oh, he's good.

809. Benjamin.

810. Yes.

811. Do you go to school yet?

812. He's in the third grade.

813. Third grade?

814. - But you're so little. - You're little.

815. - Benjamin. - Aneeka,

816. as you know, Tim broke both of his legs,

817. and so he can't easily get in and out of bed.

818. We got him one of those kind of crooked plastic bottles

819. for, you know, his business,

820. but it's not quite big enough for his...

821. Mom.

822. Tell you the truth,

823. I don't really like my family that much.

824. What a terrible thing to say.

825. It's true. I mean, I love them all to death,

826. but I just can't stand to be so close.

827. Well, what good is that kind of love?

828. I'm thinking of leaving.

829. I was thinking maybe,

830. you and Ben should come with me.

831. Where?

832. I don't know.

833. Great. Sounds like a good plan.

834. Where would you like to go?

835. - I can't afford to go anywhere. - Sure, you can.

836. There are nursing jobs all over the country.

837. Just pick a place.

838. Well... I've always wanted to go to New Orleans.

839. New Orleans. Why New Orleans?

840. Bourbon Street.

841. What's your second choice?

842. Vegas.

843. I've heard some really good things about New Orleans.

844. Let's try there first.

845. I can't just up and move to New Orleans.

846. You can if you do.

847. What about Ben's dad?

848. He's a deadbeat. I should be Ben's dad.

849. You're crazy.

850. Am I?

851. What's this?

852. It's an Inspector Nestor book.

853. Remember you used to read those to me,

854. and you always knew how each story was gonna end

855. - halfway through every book? - Yeah, they were predictable.

856. Oh, maybe. I could never guess them.

857. You're an idiot.

858. Anyway, I found them in the garage,

859. and I thought maybe you could read them to the girls.

860. Huh.

861. They miss you, you know.

862. - Whole team misses you. - Sure.

863. They do.

864. I'll bet they haven't even noticed.

865. They're playing their last game this weekend.

866. Uh-huh.

867. Anything you want me to tell them for last practice?

868. Tell 'em to make a fuckin' basket.

869. Can't do it.

870. Well, maybe you can and maybe you can't,

871. but you won't know unless you try.

872. I've been trying all practice.

873. True.

874. Hey, you two.

875. (clears throat) Hey.

876. What gives? I thought practice was supposed to be over

877. 30 minutes ago.

878. Jim won't let me go until I make five more baskets.

879. Well... I'm sorry, Benjamin.

880. I didn't mean to make you feel like you couldn't go home

881. if you didn't make the shots.

882. But that's what you said.

883. Why didn't you call if you knew you were gonna be late?

884. I didn't think it was that big a deal.

885. Yeah, well, it is a big deal.

886. Stuff like that's a very big deal to moms.

887. What's your problem, Anika?

888. Nothing, Jim.

889. Just, you can't ask a girl to move 1,082 miles away with you

890. unless you're really gonna follow through.

891. Why wouldn't I follow through?

892. Because you don't know what it would be like.

893. - What would it be like? - Difficult. Very difficult.

894. Well, great. I'm used to challenges.

895. You're used to avoiding them.

896. Well...

897. maybe I don't want you to come with me.

898. Oh.

899. Okay.

900. I just said maybe.

901. No, the whole idea was stupid anyway.

902. Just forget it.

903. Come on, Ben.

904. Come on, Anika.

905. Like to make a withdrawal, please.

906. Oh.

907. I just need to be on my own.

908. Well, I understand.

909. Sometimes Mom wishes she could be on her own, too.

910. What?

911. Oh, nothing. I'm just kidding.

912. Um...

913. So where you gonna go to?

914. - Maybe New Orleans. - Oh, fun!

915. You know, Mom's never really been anywhere.

916. I know, Mom.

917. Maybe I'll come visit you after the trial.

918. Or before. Either would be great.

919. Well, I can't really leave the state till after.

920. Oh.

921. Jimmy.

922. All right, team.

923. Uh, I know this has been...

924. Girls.

925. rough season for us this year.

926. - But... - Sorry I'm late.

927. That's okay, Benjamin.

928. Is your mom here?

929. No.

930. Oh.

931. Like I said, I know it's been a rough season for us this year.

932. Not a lot of shots have fallen for us.

933. In fact, not a single shot has fallen for us in 14 games.

934. So I guess the question we have to ask ourselves is:

935. Are we gonna let those 14 games determine the next one?

936. Because if we are, then we may as well just go out there

937. and shake hands with the other team and congratulate them on their victory.

938. I see some of you nodding your heads in agreement right now.

939. By all means, it's not an altogether absurd idea.

940. The odds are that we're gonna lose

941. no matter how we go about playing this game.

942. So why do we play at all?

943. Well, team...

944. I don't really have an answer for that question.

945. And you know why?

946. Because it's a stupid question,

947. asked by a doubtful and unhappy man.

948. Forget his question. You just...

949. you gotta keep playing.

950. Because if you don't, you might end up like him.

951. And let me tell you, he's no fun.

952. Nobody knows what we're capable of, okay?

953. The past does not always predict the future.

954. Now that team may have seen us play before,

955. but they haven't seen us play today.

956. Am I right?

957. Yeah.

958. Am I right?

959. (slightly louder) Yeah.

960. All right.

961. We are the Tronics!

962. Let's show 'em what we can do then.

963. We play real hard on the court, we rock!

964. Ready?

965. One, two, three

966. Go, Ladders!

967. One, two, three, Tronics!

968. Go, Ben! Go, Ben!

969. All right! Yeah, yeah!

970. Yeah!

971. Great! Great!

972. - Good game. - Good game.

973. - Good game. - Good game.

974. Hey.

975. Hey, hey, hey. Come on.

976. Come over here.

977. No long faces.

978. That was good.

979. That was our best game yet.

980. Shut up, Jim.

981. Good job, Jimmy. You make a great coach.

982. Dear Mom:

983. I don't know where to start. So I' II just begin with the end

984. and work my way back.

985. I came home 'cause I ran out of money

986. and had nowhere else to go.

987. If I had any other option. I would've taken it.

988. I did not consider having a place to come home to a blessing.

989. Instead. I thought of it as a burden and a symbol of failure.

990. I' m ashamed to admit that growing up. I pitied you.

991. And what I thought was your naive belief

992. that our dreams could come true simply by virtue of having them.

993. Want some cobbler?

994. Oh, good. I hope you enjoy it.

995. Because the truth as I witnessed it.

996. Was something completely different.

997. Does everybody like cherry cobbler?

998. The truth actually was that nothing worked out.

999. And no one anywhere lived the life they wanted.

1000. "He stepped in the back and gave us a few seconds to escape."

1001. But I see now that it was me with the naive belief.

1002. I thought if I resigned myself to disappointment.

1003. At least I' d be better off than those people who tried and failed.

1004. I hate myself for only realizing this now.

1005. And for taking and taking from you without giving anything back.

1006. You're one of the few good peaches in a world full of rotten fruit. Mom.

1007. I promise not to waste any more time

1008. or take your love for granted ever again.

1009. I love you so much. Jim.

1010. P.S. The money in this envelope is from Stacy.

1011. I figure he owes you at least this much

1012. for all the snacks he's stolen.

1013. All right, all right. All right!

1014. All right, you got me. All right, all right, all right!

1015. And he's the one who's been sending drugs through the Fed X account.

1016. Promise to call you soon. Jim.

1017. Thirsty?

1018. Hi.

1019. This, uh...

1020. What are you doin' here?

1021. Benjamin wanted to apologize to you for telling you to shut up.

1022. I'm sorry, Jim.

1023. That's all right, Benjamin.

1024. How'd you find me?

1025. We stopped by the house to see you.

1026. - Your dad told us. - Huh.

1027. Where you going?

1028. New Orleans.

1029. Great.

1030. Benjamin, do you want to say good-bye to Jim?

1031. Bye, Jim. - Bye, Benji.

1032. Be good to your mother.

1033. And promise me you won't get too much more apathetic.

1034. At least not until your teen years.

1035. Okay.

1036. It never would've worked out anyway.

1037. Is that your bus?

1038. Yep.

1039. You better run.

1040. Bye.

1041. Good-bye, Jim.

1042. Stop that, Benji!

1043. Come on, let's go.

1044. - You wanna get an ice cream? - No.

1045. You okay?

1046. Mom!

1047. Stop the car!

1048. Can I get a ride?

1049. Sure.

1050. I thought you never ran.
