1. She's denied the cross for suicide,
and then buried at the centre of a crossroads.Copy !req
2. Show me the logic.Copy !req
3. - Father?
- What?Copy !req
4. The devil is a practical man.Copy !req
5. if she were a witch,
she was a poor return on his investment.Copy !req
6. - What do you know of logic?
- I have ears, Father.Copy !req
7. Although one is notched.
Because I love justice.Copy !req
8. You love thieving.Copy !req
9. Shut up. You dig.Copy !req
10. Crusaders.Copy !req
11. Clear the road, if you will.Copy !req
12. (man) Squire...Copy !req
13. This is for the burial, from my lord.
And a mass, for her soul.Copy !req
14. Wait... Have you forgotten?Copy !req
15. - She was your brother's wife.
- She was a suicide. Cut off her head.Copy !req
16. And return the axe.Copy !req
17. You know this place, my lord?Copy !req
18. Know it?
I know all of it.Copy !req
19. - Your brother, you have spoken to him?
- On what matter? He is still arrested.Copy !req
20. Your brother is as responsible
for his wife's sin as I am.Copy !req
21. Opinions differ, my lord.Copy !req
22. - The burial was...?
- Yes.Copy !req
23. - Yet, you did not mutilate the person?
- No.Copy !req
24. Good. A law can go too far.Copy !req
25. It can go too far - I ask myself,
"Would Jesus do it thusly?"Copy !req
26. There is so much done in Christendom
of which Christ would be incapable.Copy !req
27. Release your brother.
I cannot do without him.Copy !req
28. My brother, my lord bishop, is possessed
by the devil and must be examined.Copy !req
29. Your brother is as mad
as you are. He grieves.Copy !req
30. Without your brother, I cannot
finish my church. Let him out.Copy !req
31. And give him this, and tell him
that he is at the very centre of my prayers.Copy !req
32. The bishop needs you.Copy !req
33. - Release him.
- On your feet.Copy !req
34. This is not heaven, it's the world.
And there's troubles in it.Copy !req
35. Do yourself no injury.
Other men are always good for that.Copy !req
36. - (man #1) And what of Jerusalem?
- (man #2) Jerusalem?Copy !req
37. In peril, my lord. As always.Copy !req
38. We have stood there against
the Saracens for over 100 years.Copy !req
39. The Saracens, as you call them, have now
unified in Egypt, Syria and all Arabia.Copy !req
40. - The Saracens and someone new.
- Saladin, their king.Copy !req
41. - Sal-adin.
- (belches) Gibberish.Copy !req
42. - Very fine.
- And yet, you do not drink.Copy !req
43. A knight should be a knight,
a monk a monk.Copy !req
44. - Brother...
- Not both at once. That's what I say.Copy !req
45. Now, I may be old-fashioned, but...Copy !req
46. as for the cup,
I have an artificer, a blacksmith.Copy !req
47. Or, did have.Copy !req
48. Which son of the blacksmith of my time
is the blacksmith now?Copy !req
49. Balian, the eldest.Copy !req
50. His child died. His wife fell into a
melancholy, she would not listen to reason...Copy !req
51. She killed herself.Copy !req
52. It occurs.
But what's that to you?Copy !req
53. A private matter.Copy !req
54. It's been six-and-twenty years since my
brother took the cross, and now he returns.Copy !req
55. An actual baron
of the kingdom of Jerusalem.Copy !req
56. How is that for the lot of a younger brother?
With no heir, it comes to me.Copy !req
57. - And thus to you.
- Then I thank the stars for my uncle.Copy !req
58. Her grave was here.
Or was it there?Copy !req
59. I'm afraid I can't tell you the exact location.
I wasn't present at the burial.Copy !req
60. Call me a liar. You have reason.Copy !req
61. You never fight back.Copy !req
62. Huh?Copy !req
63. You always turn the other cheek. I think
that you conceive yourself without sin.Copy !req
64. That is a sin!Copy !req
65. We shall work.Copy !req
66. (woman) Come on, Thomas.
I told you to stop that now.Copy !req
67. Out of the way of the horses.Copy !req
68. - That is the man. That is the man.
- (hospitaller) You're an armourer, yes?Copy !req
69. An artificer, according to
your lord and this priest.Copy !req
70. You have my sympathy and my blessing.Copy !req
71. Your dead wife and stillborn child
are today the subject of my prayers.Copy !req
72. We need all these horses shod.
We need food. And we'll pay.Copy !req
73. He says yes.Copy !req
74. (priest) He has made great engines for sieges.Copy !req
75. He has made war machines
that cast the largest stones.Copy !req
76. He also works finely in silver.Copy !req
77. He will be one of the few on your journey
worth more alive than dead.Copy !req
78. Shut up.Copy !req
79. - Have you been at war?
- On horse.Copy !req
80. - And as an engineer, also.
- Against whom, and for whom did you fight?Copy !req
81. For one lord against another,
on a point which cannot be remembered.Copy !req
82. There's better game now.
One God against another.Copy !req
83. - The pay is proportionate.
- I've been telling him that.Copy !req
84. Do you still advise
what you advised upon the road?Copy !req
85. I do, my lord.Copy !req
86. But know that this man, Balian,
mourns his wife.Copy !req
87. What does that say?Copy !req
88. "What man is a man
who does not make the world better?"Copy !req
89. Leave me with this man.Copy !req
90. God has made us men.
We must suffer all.Copy !req
91. I also have lost.Copy !req
92. Some say Jerusalem is the very centre
of the world for asking forgiveness.Copy !req
93. But myself, I call it here. Now.Copy !req
94. I knew your namesake.Copy !req
95. I knew your mother.Copy !req
96. To be courteous, I should say
that it was against her objections.Copy !req
97. But I was the lord's brother
and she had no choice.Copy !req
98. But I did not force her.Copy !req
99. I have forgiveness to ask of you.Copy !req
100. I am Godfrey, the baron of lbelin.Copy !req
101. I have 100 men at arms in Jerusalem.Copy !req
102. if you will come with me,
you will have a livingCopy !req
103. and you will have my thanks - there it is.Copy !req
104. Whoever you are, my lord,
my place is here.Copy !req
105. What made it your place is now dead.Copy !req
106. You will never see me again.
if you want anything of me, take it now.Copy !req
107. I want nothing.Copy !req
108. I am sorry for your troubles.
God protect you.Copy !req
109. Jerusalem is easy to find.Copy !req
110. You come to where the men speak ltalian,
and continue until they speak something else.Copy !req
111. We go by Messina.
Goodbye.Copy !req
112. (priest) The village does not want you.Copy !req
113. When the old lord is dead,
they will drive you out.Copy !req
114. When the bishop is dead, it is certain.Copy !req
115. And you take my property.Copy !req
116. - The Church.
- You.Copy !req
117. They would have taken you to Jerusalem.Copy !req
118. Away from... all this.Copy !req
119. I arranged it.Copy !req
120. I swear to you, you will have no peace
so long as you stay here.Copy !req
121. No man ever needed a new world more.Copy !req
122. lmagine your sin and pain erased.Copy !req
123. All...Copy !req
124. if you take the Crusade...Copy !req
125. you may relieve your wife's position in hell.Copy !req
126. I put it delicately.
She was a suicide. She is in hell.Copy !req
127. Though what she does there
without a head...Copy !req
128. (Godfrey) Wait here.Copy !req
129. Have you come to kill me?
Even these days, it is not easy.Copy !req
130. Well?Copy !req
131. I have done...Copy !req
132. murder.Copy !req
133. Haven't we all?Copy !req
134. Is it true that in Jerusalem
I can erase my sins?Copy !req
135. And those of my wife?
Is it true?Copy !req
136. We can find out together.Copy !req
137. Show me your hand.Copy !req
138. Hey!Copy !req
139. - Pick it up. Let's see what you're made of.
- His hand is hurt, my lord.Copy !req
140. I once fought two days
with an arrow through my testicle.Copy !req
141. Never use a low guard.
You fight well.Copy !req
142. Let's work on your skills.Copy !req
143. Take a high guard, like this.Copy !req
144. The ltalians call it la posta del falcone -
the guard of the hawk.Copy !req
145. You strike from high. Like this.Copy !req
146. Do it. Sword straighter.Copy !req
147. Come on. Leg back. Bend your knees.
Sword straighter.Copy !req
148. Defend yourself.Copy !req
149. The blade isn't the only part of a sword.Copy !req
150. Attack.Copy !req
151. I have your leave?Copy !req
152. Pay attention.Copy !req
153. Eins, zwei, drei,Copy !req
154. vier, fünf.Copy !req
155. What's this?Copy !req
156. - Uncle.
- Nephew.Copy !req
157. You have with you a man, Balian,
who killed a priest, his brother.Copy !req
158. I'm charged by both my father
and the lord bishop to bring him back.Copy !req
159. What he says is true.
They have the right to take me.Copy !req
160. I say he's innocent.
if you say he's guilty, we'll fight.Copy !req
161. - God will decide the truth of it.
- My German friend is a student of the law.Copy !req
162. Just give him to me.
I'll fight you for something else.Copy !req
163. - Uncle, he's a murderer.
- So am l.Copy !req
164. Whoever dies here today,
you will certainly be among them.Copy !req
165. You are my uncle.
I must give you the road.Copy !req
166. To the flanks.Copy !req
167. Thank my brother for his love.Copy !req
168. - I am the son of Roger de...
- Take your helmet off while addressing me.Copy !req
169. I am the son of Roger de Cormier.Copy !req
170. I am accorded the privilege of ransom.Copy !req
171. This is true.Copy !req
172. Well, you broke the arrow.Copy !req
173. if the ribs are broken,
the marrow may enter the blood,Copy !req
174. in which case
you'll take a fever and die.Copy !req
175. Or a cyst will form, and you'll live.Copy !req
176. - You're in the hands of God.
- Will you get me some more wine?Copy !req
177. It was not that they had no right to take you.
It was the way they asked.Copy !req
178. They had the right to take me.Copy !req
179. And so do l.Copy !req
180. To kill an infidel, the Pope has said,
is not murder. It is the path to heaven.Copy !req
181. - Where do you go?
- To Jerusalem, brother.Copy !req
182. - By which road?
- Someone knows.Copy !req
183. God knows.Copy !req
184. - When shall we stop this madness?
- It will soon be beyond my concern.Copy !req
185. Who is this?Copy !req
186. My son.Copy !req
187. Would I had fought you when you were
still capable of making bastards.Copy !req
188. I knew your mother
when she was making hers.Copy !req
189. Fortunately, you're too old to be one of mine.Copy !req
190. All will be settled.Copy !req
191. Do you know what lies in the Holy Land?Copy !req
192. A new world.Copy !req
193. A man who in France had not a house,
is, in the Holy Land, the master of a city.Copy !req
194. He who was the master of a city
begs in the gutter.Copy !req
195. There, at the end of the world,Copy !req
196. you are not what you were born,
but what you have within yourself to be.Copy !req
197. I hope to find forgiveness.
That's all I know.Copy !req
198. Whatever your position,
you are of my house.Copy !req
199. And that means you will
serve the king of Jerusalem.Copy !req
200. What could a king ask of a man like me?Copy !req
201. A better world than has ever been seen.Copy !req
202. A kingdom of conscience.Copy !req
203. A kingdom of heaven.Copy !req
204. There is peace between Christian and Muslim.Copy !req
205. We live together.
Or, between Saladin and the king, we try.Copy !req
206. Did you think that lay
at the end of a crusade?Copy !req
207. It does.Copy !req
208. My son, you are all that survives me.
Do not disappoint me.Copy !req
209. When we took the Holy Land,
we took the Saracen trading ports.Copy !req
210. So ltalian ships carry silks and spices,
and pilgrims, if they have money.Copy !req
211. And ltaly becomes rich,
as the Saviour intended.Copy !req
212. - Who are those men?
- Muslims.Copy !req
213. Saracens.Copy !req
214. - And they are allowed their prayers?
- if they pay the tax.Copy !req
215. "Praise be to God.
It is proper to praise him."Copy !req
216. Sounds like our prayers.Copy !req
217. It's good.Copy !req
218. When the king is dead, Jerusalem
will be no place for friends of Muslims,Copy !req
219. or traitors to Christendom,
like your father.Copy !req
220. I am Guy de Lusignan.Copy !req
221. Remember that name.Copy !req
222. And me.Copy !req
223. Keep it.Copy !req
224. My lord...Copy !req
225. How will you ride
if you have no stick to beat the horse?Copy !req
226. He will be king in Jerusalem one day.Copy !req
227. Balian...Copy !req
228. Hurry.Copy !req
229. I can go no further.Copy !req
230. (hospitaller) Get on your knees.Copy !req
231. Be without fear
in the face of your enemies.Copy !req
232. Be brave and upright
that God may love thee.Copy !req
233. Speak the truth always,
even if it leads to your death.Copy !req
234. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong.Copy !req
235. That is your oath.Copy !req
236. And that's so you remember it.Copy !req
237. Rise a knight and Baron of lbelin.Copy !req
238. Defend the king.Copy !req
239. if the king is no more,
protect the people.Copy !req
240. It's time now, my lord,
to confess to God, not your son.Copy !req
241. Are you sorry for all your sins?Copy !req
242. For all but one.Copy !req
243. You sail now for Jerusalem,
as your father wished.Copy !req
244. I'll follow within the week.
Our voyage is perilous.Copy !req
245. if God has purpose for you there,
He'll keep you safe in His hands.Copy !req
246. if not...Copy !req
247. God bless you.Copy !req
248. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.Copy !req
249. He says that is his horse.Copy !req
250. - Why would it be his horse?
- Because it is on his land.Copy !req
251. I took this horse from the sea.Copy !req
252. He says you are a great liar, and he
will fight you because you are a liar.Copy !req
253. - I have no desire to fight.
- Then you must give him the horse.Copy !req
254. No.Copy !req
255. - Fight me fairly!
- (speaks Arabic)Copy !req
256. - Why? Why should he? He is a knight.
- And I am the baron of lbelin.Copy !req
257. He says the baron of lbelin is old.
He knew him at Damascus.Copy !req
258. I am the new one.Copy !req
259. (man on horse) Stop!Copy !req
260. That's enough!Copy !req
261. Stop! Stop!Copy !req
262. lbelin, that's enough!Copy !req
263. lbelin! Stop!Copy !req
264. - You take it well that I've killed your master.
- It was the end of his time.Copy !req
265. All is as God wills it.Copy !req
266. Now finish this.Copy !req
267. Take me to Jerusalem.Copy !req
268. Very good horse.Copy !req
269. Take the horse and be about your business.Copy !req
270. This is your prize of battle. I am your
prisoner, your slave should you wish it.Copy !req
271. I have been a slave or very near to one.Copy !req
272. I will never keep one
nor suffer any to be kept. Go.Copy !req
273. The man you killed
was a great cavalier among the Muslims.Copy !req
274. - His name was Mummad al Fais.
- I will pray for him.Copy !req
275. Your quality will be known among
your enemies before ever you meet them.Copy !req
276. Old man, where is it
that Christ was crucified?Copy !req
277. God, what is it you want of me?Copy !req
278. How can you be in hell
when you're in my heart?Copy !req
279. - You must have known him.
- What?Copy !req
280. Since you carry Godfrey's sword,
you must have known him.Copy !req
281. - I did.
- A man my size.Copy !req
282. - Yes.
- And green eyes.Copy !req
283. Blue.Copy !req
284. Come with us...Copy !req
285. my lord.Copy !req
286. No. No.
Give me the towel.Copy !req
287. Give me the towel. Give me the towel.Copy !req
288. (Godfrey) A man who in France
had not a house,Copy !req
289. is, in the Holy Land,
the master of a city.Copy !req
290. Stop. You're hurting him.Copy !req
291. Whoa.Copy !req
292. - Where's your master?
- I have none.Copy !req
293. Give me some water.Copy !req
294. Thank you for the drink.Copy !req
295. if you see Balian, the son of Godfrey,
tell him that Sibylla called.Copy !req
296. So how find you Jerusalem?Copy !req
297. God does not speak to me.
Not even on the hill where Christ died.Copy !req
298. I am outside God's grace.Copy !req
299. - I have not heard that.
- At any rate, it seems...Copy !req
300. - I have lost my religion.
- I put no stock in religion.Copy !req
301. I've seen the lunacy of fanatics of every
denomination be called the "will of God".Copy !req
302. I've seen too much religion
in the eyes of too many murderers.Copy !req
303. Holiness is in right actionCopy !req
304. and courage on behalf of those
who cannot defend themselves.Copy !req
305. And goodness -Copy !req
306. what God desires -
is here and here.Copy !req
307. By what you decide to do every day,
you will be a good man...Copy !req
308. or not.Copy !req
309. Come.Copy !req
310. The king has made a peace
with Saladin these past six years.Copy !req
311. He holds Jerusalem
as a place for prayer for all faiths,Copy !req
312. as the Muslims did before we came.Copy !req
313. These men are Templars.
They killed Arabs.Copy !req
314. So they are dying for what the Pope
would command them to do.Copy !req
315. Yes, but not Christ, I think.
Nor this king.Copy !req
316. - Who says I raid?
- That witness...Copy !req
317. all of Jerusalem, Holy God and me.Copy !req
318. That witness, if you call him that,
is a Saracen. He lies.Copy !req
319. There will come a day, Reynald de Chatillon,
when you are not protected by your title.Copy !req
320. Oh? When will that be?Copy !req
321. Alert me, Tiberias, when men are equal
and the kingdom of Heaven has arrived.Copy !req
322. Those Templars have been hung
for a raid I know you commanded.Copy !req
323. Prove it.
I will wait at Kerak until you do.Copy !req
324. The king will take
your castle of Kerak, Reynald.Copy !req
325. Try to take it, Tiberias.
I'll be there.Copy !req
326. I cannot protect your caravans, unless
you agree to be escorted by our soldiers.Copy !req
327. I trade to make money, not to offend God
by associating with Christians.Copy !req
328. - But you will take Christian gold.
- Gold is gold.Copy !req
329. Of course.Copy !req
330. My lord, Tiberias.Copy !req
331. My lord.Copy !req
332. It's true.Copy !req
333. You're your father's son.
He was my friend.Copy !req
334. I'm yours.Copy !req
335. Godfrey dead.
It could have come at a better time.Copy !req
336. Come.Copy !req
337. It was shouted in the streets
that you killed a great lord of Syria.Copy !req
338. Saladin himself sent word
that your fight did not breach the peace,Copy !req
339. that you had cause.Copy !req
340. What know you of Saladin?Copy !req
341. He is king of the Saracens
and surrounds this kingdom.Copy !req
342. He has 200,000 men in Damascus alone.Copy !req
343. He could win a war if he goes to war.Copy !req
344. And he's daily given cause for war
by fanatics newly from Europe.Copy !req
345. By Templar bastards
like Reynald de Chatillon.Copy !req
346. Here, from this room, I keep the peace -
as far as it can be kept.Copy !req
347. But Saladin and the king between them
would make a better world.Copy !req
348. if it lives only for a while,
it still has lived.Copy !req
349. What did your father tell you
of your obligations?Copy !req
350. That I was to be a good knight.Copy !req
351. I pray the world and Jerusalem
can accommodate such a rarity...Copy !req
352. as a perfect knight.Copy !req
353. Have you dined?Copy !req
354. The princess Sibylla of Jerusalem
and her husband, Guy de Lusignan.Copy !req
355. (Tiberias) So, how many knights
did you find in France?Copy !req
356. 50.Copy !req
357. They've sworn allegiance to the king?Copy !req
358. Of course, Tiberias.
Obviously.Copy !req
359. - You sit at my table?
- Is it not the king's table?Copy !req
360. Is it? I have not seen
a king at it for years.Copy !req
361. I cannot eat.
I am finicky about company.Copy !req
362. In France, this could not inherit.Copy !req
363. But here, there are no civilized rules.Copy !req
364. I have business in the East.Copy !req
365. My wife does not lament my absence.Copy !req
366. That is either the best of wives,
or the very, very worst.Copy !req
367. - Do you go to meet Reynald?
- No, my lord. He is in disfavour.Copy !req
368. I am a member of this court.Copy !req
369. Why should I make leave
with that troublemaker?Copy !req
370. To the very best of wives.Copy !req
371. - The king will see you now.
- The king would see Godfrey's son.Copy !req
372. I'll take him.Copy !req
373. This morning,
I spoke without knowing who you were.Copy !req
374. I knew who you were.Copy !req
375. It's unmistakable.
I loved your father.Copy !req
376. And I shall love you.Copy !req
377. Do you fear being with me?Copy !req
378. No...Copy !req
379. - And yes.
- (giggles)Copy !req
380. A woman in my place has two faces.Copy !req
381. One for the world,
and one which she wears in private.Copy !req
382. With you, I'll be only Sibylla.Copy !req
383. (whispers) Tiberias thinks me unpredictable.Copy !req
384. I am unpredictable.Copy !req
385. No. There.Copy !req
386. (man) Come forward.Copy !req
387. I am glad to meet Godfrey's son.
He was one of my greatest teachers.Copy !req
388. He was there when,
playing with the other boys, my arm was cut.Copy !req
389. And it was he, not my father's physicians,
who noticed I felt no pain.Copy !req
390. He wept when he gave my father
the news that I am a leper.Copy !req
391. The Saracens say this disease is God's
vengeance against the vanity of our kingdom.Copy !req
392. As wretched as I am, these Arabs believeCopy !req
393. that the chastisement that awaits me in hell
is far more severe and lasting.Copy !req
394. if that's true, I call it unfair.Copy !req
395. Come. Sit.Copy !req
396. - Do you play?
- No.Copy !req
397. The whole world is in chess.
Any move can be the death of you.Copy !req
398. Do anything except remain where you
started, and you can't be sure of your end.Copy !req
399. Were you sure of your end once?Copy !req
400. - I was.
- What was it?Copy !req
401. To be buried 100 yards
from where I was born.Copy !req
402. - And now?
- I sit in Jerusalem, and look upon a king.Copy !req
403. When I was 16,
I won a great victory.Copy !req
404. I felt in that moment
I would live to be 100.Copy !req
405. Now I know I shall not see 30.Copy !req
406. None of us know our end, really.
Or what hand will guide us there.Copy !req
407. A king may move a man.Copy !req
408. A father may claim a son.Copy !req
409. That man can also move himself, and only
then does that man truly begin his own game.Copy !req
410. Remember, howsoever you are played, or
by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone.Copy !req
411. Even though those who presume
to play you be kings or men of power.Copy !req
412. When you stand before God, you cannot say,
"But I was told by others to do thus",Copy !req
413. or that virtue
"was not convenient at the time".Copy !req
414. This will not suffice.
Remember that.Copy !req
415. I will.Copy !req
416. - Do you know what this is?
- The fortification.Copy !req
417. What do you think of it?Copy !req
418. You disapprove.
How would you improve it?Copy !req
419. A cross.
Or better, a star. Like this.Copy !req
420. That way, no part may be approachedCopy !req
421. without being exposed
to fire from another part.Copy !req
422. Yes, I like this.
Your walls are more difficult to address.Copy !req
423. Very good. You will go to your father's
house at lbelin, your house now,Copy !req
424. and from there you will
protect the pilgrim road.Copy !req
425. Safeguard, in particular,
the Jews and the Muslims.Copy !req
426. All are welcome in Jerusalem,Copy !req
427. not only because it's expedient,
but because it is right.Copy !req
428. Protect the helpless, and then maybe one day
when I am helpless you will protect me.Copy !req
429. There, my lord.Copy !req
430. lbelin.Copy !req
431. "Quod sumus... hoc eritis."Copy !req
432. "Such as we are... you will be."Copy !req
433. Your father was important.
His lands were not.Copy !req
434. That will suit me.Copy !req
435. My lord, you have 1,000 acres,
100 families.Copy !req
436. You have Christians, Jews, Muslims.Copy !req
437. You have 50 pairs of oxen.
This is a poor and dusty place.Copy !req
438. What we do not have is water.Copy !req
439. Right. Stone the walls.Copy !req
440. I'm on my way to Cana.Copy !req
441. Where Jesus changed water to wine.Copy !req
442. But a better trick would be
to change you to a nobleman.Copy !req
443. That should be easy. In France,
a few yards of silk can make a nobleman.Copy !req
444. - I expect your hospitality.
- It is given.Copy !req
445. Latif.Copy !req
446. But this isn't adultery.
It's washing.Copy !req
447. But if it were adultery, which it isn't, the
Commandments are not for people like us.Copy !req
448. They're for the others.Copy !req
449. Did they give you something to eat?Copy !req
450. I said to wait until the master returned.Copy !req
451. My cook will prepare
something while you wash.Copy !req
452. - What?
- It seems years since I've seen a woman eat.Copy !req
453. Truly?Copy !req
454. I was watching you today.Copy !req
455. You've been given a patch of dirt and
it seems you will build a new Jerusalem here.Copy !req
456. It is my land.Copy !req
457. Who would I be
if I did not try to make it better?Copy !req
458. They try to be one.
One heart, one morality.Copy !req
459. Their prophet says, "Submit."Copy !req
460. Jesus says...Copy !req
461. "Decide."Copy !req
462. Did you decide on Guy?Copy !req
463. Guy was chosen by my mother.Copy !req
464. My first husband died
before our son was born.Copy !req
465. I was only 15.Copy !req
466. I've met your son.Copy !req
467. - I could stay here for ever.
- This house is yours.Copy !req
468. Why do you think I'm here?Copy !req
469. I know that lbelin
is not on the way to Cana.Copy !req
470. - What else do you know, my lord?
- I know that you are a princess.Copy !req
471. - And I am no lord.
- You're a knight.Copy !req
472. Neither earned nor proved.Copy !req
473. I'm not here with you
because I'm bored or wicked.Copy !req
474. I'm here because...Copy !req
475. because in the East,
between one person and another,Copy !req
476. there is only light.Copy !req
477. Halt!Copy !req
478. - This caravan is armed, Reynald.
- Good. No sport otherwise.Copy !req
479. (Lusignan) They've seen us.Copy !req
480. - Go after them. The rider is getting away.
- Nothing will come of it.Copy !req
481. I'd prefer not to be hanged
before my wife is queen.Copy !req
482. Don't worry.
"Who but Reynald", they'll say.Copy !req
483. It's always me.
They'll believe it in Jerusalem.Copy !req
484. - You were at Nazareth, praying.
- You're a dangerous man.Copy !req
485. if the war's to be now or later,
I would have it now.Copy !req
486. - How long can the leper last?
- God wills it. God wills it!Copy !req
487. - (all) God wills it!
- Jerusalem.Copy !req
488. It's you.Copy !req
489. This is from France.
I've never been there.Copy !req
490. This from my brother.
This to remind us of death.Copy !req
491. And this...Copy !req
492. I bought the day I saw you.Copy !req
493. You lie.Copy !req
494. (Tiberias) Guy de Lusignan
and Reynald de Chatillon,Copy !req
495. with the Templars,
have attacked a Saracen caravan.Copy !req
496. - (Lusignan) Silence!
- (templar) It was no caravan.Copy !req
497. It was an army headed for Bethlehem
to desecrate our lord's birthplace.Copy !req
498. Reynald, with the Templars,
have broken the king's pledge of peace.Copy !req
499. Saladin will come into this kingdom...Copy !req
500. Tiberias knows more than a Christian
should about Saladin's intentions.Copy !req
501. That I would rather live with men
than kill them...Copy !req
502. is certainly why you are alive.Copy !req
503. That sort of Christianity
has its uses, I suppose.Copy !req
504. We must not go to war with Saladin.Copy !req
505. We do not want it and we may not win it.Copy !req
506. Blasphemy!Copy !req
507. An army of Jesus Christ which bears
his holy cross cannot be beaten.Copy !req
508. Does Tiberias suggest it could be?Copy !req
509. There must be war.
God wills it.Copy !req
510. God wills it!Copy !req
511. Silence!Copy !req
512. Saladin has crossed the Jordan
with 200,000 men.Copy !req
513. He'll make first for Kerak and
Reynald de Chatillon. My lord...Copy !req
514. We must meet him before he reaches Kerak.Copy !req
515. I will lead the army.Copy !req
516. My lord, if you travel, you'll die.Copy !req
517. Send word to Balian to protect the villagers.Copy !req
518. - Assemble the army.
- (cheering)Copy !req
519. What becomes of us?Copy !req
520. The world will decide.Copy !req
521. The world always decides.Copy !req
522. (man) Somebody's shot!
Somebody's shot!Copy !req
523. My lord, the king is marching on Kerak.Copy !req
524. Saracen cavalry are coming
to close Reynald in.Copy !req
525. These people are not safe outside the walls.
Saladin will certainly come behind them.Copy !req
526. Go into the fortress now.Copy !req
527. Visitors.Copy !req
528. (man) My lord Balian.Copy !req
529. My lord Balian.Copy !req
530. My lord Reynald prays
you bring your force into Kerak.Copy !req
531. Thank you, but no.
if we do, these people will die.Copy !req
532. We'll hold the Saracen cavalry
until the king arrives.Copy !req
533. So be it.Copy !req
534. We cannot attack that and live.Copy !req
535. My lady.Copy !req
536. - What do you look at?
- A knight.Copy !req
537. His men.Copy !req
538. Are you with me?Copy !req
539. Divide!Copy !req
540. Your quality will be known among
your enemies before ever you meet them.Copy !req
541. - You were not that man's servant.
- No. He was my servant.Copy !req
542. - What becomes of us?
- As you deserve.Copy !req
543. You reap what you sow.Copy !req
544. You have heard of this, no?Copy !req
545. Get up.Copy !req
546. You may go into Kerak,
but you will die there.Copy !req
547. My master is here.Copy !req
548. Tell my lord Saladin
that Jerusalem has come.Copy !req
549. Saladin.Copy !req
550. I pray you pull back your cavalry
and leave this matter to me.Copy !req
551. I pray you retire unharmed to Damascus.Copy !req
552. Reynald of Chatillon
will be punished. I swear it.Copy !req
553. Withdraw or we will all die here.Copy !req
554. Do we have terms?Copy !req
555. We have terms.Copy !req
556. I will send you my physicians.Copy !req
557. Assalamu alaikum.Copy !req
558. Wa alaikum assalam.Copy !req
559. I am Reynald of Chatillon!Copy !req
560. On your knees.Copy !req
561. Lower.Copy !req
562. I am Jerusalem.Copy !req
563. And you, Reynald,Copy !req
564. will give me the kiss of peace.Copy !req
565. Guard.Copy !req
566. - What are you looking at?
- A dead man.Copy !req
567. Reynald de Chatillon,
you are arrested and condemned.Copy !req
568. if you continue like this,
I shall have to find a use for you.Copy !req
569. - if God can spare you, that is.
- God does not know me.Copy !req
570. Yes, but I do.Copy !req
571. I need you in Jerusalem.Copy !req
572. - Assalamu alaikum.
- Wa alaikum assalam.Copy !req
573. Why did we retire?Copy !req
574. Why?Copy !req
575. God did not favour him.
God alone determines the results of battles.Copy !req
576. The results of battles are determined by God,
but also by preparation, numbers,Copy !req
577. the absence of disease
and the availability of water.Copy !req
578. One cannot maintain a siege
with the enemy behind.Copy !req
579. How many battles did God win
for the Muslims before I came?Copy !req
580. That is, before God
determined that I should come.Copy !req
581. Few enough.Copy !req
582. That's because we were sinful.Copy !req
583. It is because you were unprepared.Copy !req
584. if you think that way,
you shall not be king for long.Copy !req
585. When I'm not king, I quake for lslam.Copy !req
586. Thank you for your visit.Copy !req
587. You promised.Copy !req
588. You promised to return Jerusalem.Copy !req
589. Don't forget.Copy !req
590. if I do not deliver war, I have no peace.Copy !req
591. The king of Jerusalem will die soon.Copy !req
592. When he is dead, the boy will become
king of a kingdom he cannot control.Copy !req
593. The Christians will make the war you need.Copy !req
594. I am Reynald of Chatillon!Copy !req
595. Reynald of Chatillon!Copy !req
596. I am...Copy !req
597. Reynald of Chatillon!Copy !req
598. (patriarch) The things that we have left
undone plague us as death comes.Copy !req
599. That is why to the dying
there is no comfort but the Lord.Copy !req
600. (king) Spare me your sermon.Copy !req
601. Go and prepare your people
for the coronation of my nephew.Copy !req
602. Your confession, my lord.Copy !req
603. I shall confess to God when I see him...Copy !req
604. not to you.Copy !req
605. Now, leave me.Copy !req
606. Tsk.Copy !req
607. You sometimes dream you are my wife.Copy !req
608. Let's pretend you are.Copy !req
609. I must go.Copy !req
610. We can't meet in the city.Copy !req
611. Then we will leave it.Copy !req
612. And live how? Live where?Copy !req
613. Balian, my brother's dying.Copy !req
614. My son will be king, and I his regent.
I must rule for him.Copy !req
615. And not just in Jerusalem,
but Ankara, Ashkelon, Beirut...Copy !req
616. And Guy?Copy !req
617. Always surround your knights
with foot soldiers.Copy !req
618. These rooms are not yours.Copy !req
619. One day I will be the husband
I was commissioned to be.Copy !req
620. And perhaps not, my dear.Copy !req
621. Your lover has 100 knights
and the love of the king.Copy !req
622. l, the largest force in the kingdom
and the support of the Templars.Copy !req
623. I can do without the king's affection.Copy !req
624. But as for your love...Copy !req
625. Then we must come to an understanding.Copy !req
626. You need my knights,
or his rule will be bloody and brief.Copy !req
627. So, my friend, the time has come
to conclude my affairs.Copy !req
628. if I leave the army with Guy, he will
take power and make war on the Muslims.Copy !req
629. We have decided that you shall take
command of the army of Jerusalem.Copy !req
630. Will you defend my nephew while he's king?Copy !req
631. Whatever you ask, I will serve.Copy !req
632. No. Hear it all before you answer.Copy !req
633. Would you marry my sister Sibylla,
were she free of Guy de Lusignan?Copy !req
634. And Guy?Copy !req
635. He will be executed.Copy !req
636. Along with his knights
who do not swear your allegiance.Copy !req
637. - I cannot be the cause of that.
- "Whatever you ask, I will serve."Copy !req
638. A king may move a man, you said.Copy !req
639. But the soul belongs to the man.Copy !req
640. Yes, I did.Copy !req
641. You have my love and my answer.Copy !req
642. So be it.Copy !req
643. Why do you protect Guy?
He's a man who insults you, hates you.Copy !req
644. He'd kill you himself if he had the chance.Copy !req
645. But for the salvation of this kingdom,
would it be so hard to marry Sibylla?Copy !req
646. Jerusalem has no need of a perfect knight.Copy !req
647. No. It is a kingdom of conscience.Copy !req
648. Or nothing.Copy !req
649. Sibylla.Copy !req
650. Who are you to refuse a king?Copy !req
651. I will have power,
without Guy or with him.Copy !req
652. Guy isn't dead at your say-so,
or my brother's, but at mine.Copy !req
653. Do you have any idea of Jerusalem,
except that it is yours?Copy !req
654. You will never hold it in peace,
as your brother did.Copy !req
655. - It will be war.
- My grandfather took Jerusalem in blood.Copy !req
656. I'll keep it the same way, or any way I can.Copy !req
657. I am what I am.
I offer you that.Copy !req
658. And the world.Copy !req
659. You say no.Copy !req
660. Do you think I'm like Guy?Copy !req
661. That I would sell my soul?Copy !req
662. There'll be a day when you will wish
you had done a little evil...Copy !req
663. to do a greater good.Copy !req
664. (Lusignan) Reynald.Copy !req
665. My lord.Copy !req
666. Do you really think the king wants you
as head of the army once he's gone?Copy !req
667. Think your wife does?Copy !req
668. - I have a problem.
- Ah, yes. Balian.Copy !req
669. I saw him at Kerak.Copy !req
670. Celebrated.Copy !req
671. You must beware a popular man.Copy !req
672. Kill him.Copy !req
673. - (Sibylla) What's that?
- (boy) England.Copy !req
674. - The king?
- Richard, and his father was Henry.Copy !req
675. - Good. And that?
- France. Will I ever see France?Copy !req
676. Maybe one day.
But you must be king here.Copy !req
677. - How many islands can you see here?
- One, two...Copy !req
678. - The king will see you.
- No, I can't.Copy !req
679. I can't bear to look at him.
He knows this.Copy !req
680. It doesn't mean I don't love him.Copy !req
681. Go, madam.Copy !req
682. Oh.Copy !req
683. Hello.Copy !req
684. I was dreaming.Copy !req
685. I was back in that summer
when I defeated Saladin.Copy !req
686. Do you remember it?Copy !req
687. I was only 16.Copy !req
688. - You were a beautiful boy.
- Yes.Copy !req
689. You've always been beautiful.Copy !req
690. In every way.Copy !req
691. My beautiful sister.
I've missed you.Copy !req
692. So beautiful.Copy !req
693. I'm sorry if I've caused you any pain.Copy !req
694. Remember me as I was.Copy !req
695. I will.Copy !req
696. Sibylla.Copy !req
697. if my son has your knights...Copy !req
698. you have your wife.Copy !req
699. Benedicimus domine.Copy !req
700. Behold your rightful king and heir to
the throne of the kingdom of Jerusalem.Copy !req
701. (crowd) Hail! Hail! Hail!Copy !req
702. Long live the king in prosperity.Copy !req
703. (crowd) Long live the king!Copy !req
704. Long live the king!
Long live the king!Copy !req
705. (hospitaller) One may stare into the light,
until one becomes the light.Copy !req
706. I've done it many times.Copy !req
707. There's your religion.
One spark, a creosote bush.Copy !req
708. There's your Moses.
I did not hear it speak.Copy !req
709. That does not mean that there is no God.Copy !req
710. - Do you love her?
- Yes.Copy !req
711. The heart will mend.
Your duty is to the people of the city.Copy !req
712. - I go to pray.
- For what?Copy !req
713. For the strength to endure what is to come.Copy !req
714. And what is to come?Copy !req
715. The reckoning is to come
for what was done 100 years before.Copy !req
716. The Muslims will never forget.Copy !req
717. Nor should they.Copy !req
718. My lady, your letter to Saladin.Copy !req
719. Peace to be sustained, borders respected,
trade allowed to continue.Copy !req
720. Is this wise?
To show your intentions?Copy !req
721. Better, surely, to let him wonder?Copy !req
722. We keep my brother's peace.
Sign.Copy !req
723. Take the seal.Copy !req
724. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Be careful.Copy !req
725. Put it back, my darling.Copy !req
726. There is a rumour.Copy !req
727. We must condemn it immediately.Copy !req
728. Call it treason.
And kill those who whisper it.Copy !req
729. The rumour will die
if we show the boy as active...Copy !req
730. How long before he wears a mask?Copy !req
731. Will you have one made for him?Copy !req
732. How did my boy deserve it?Copy !req
733. Jerusalem is dead, Tiberias.Copy !req
734. No kingdom is worth my son alive in hell.Copy !req
735. I will go to hell instead.Copy !req
736. - Do you remember the story of Louan?
- No.Copy !req
737. No?Copy !req
738. - Do you remember why?
- No.Copy !req
739. And he was so lonely that...Copy !req
740. - he called all the gods.
- Why?Copy !req
741. Because he was desperate.
As a proof of love.Copy !req
742. Is this why you came
to the Holy Land? Come on!Copy !req
743. Leave us.Copy !req
744. - The boy is in heaven?
- Yes.Copy !req
745. His mother has more backbone than I do.Copy !req
746. She's in the crypt,
and will not come out.Copy !req
747. - Have the Templars killed Balian?
- Yes.Copy !req
748. Reynald...Copy !req
749. Give me a war.Copy !req
750. That is what I do.Copy !req
751. Behold your rightful queen and heir to
the throne of the kingdom of Jerusalem.Copy !req
752. (crowd) Hail! Hail! Hail!Copy !req
753. l, Sibylla,
by the grace of the holy spirit,Copy !req
754. choose as king Guy de Lusignan,
the man who has been my husband.Copy !req
755. With the help of God,
he will rule his people well.Copy !req
756. Long live the king in prosperity.Copy !req
757. (crowd) Long live the king.
Long live the king. Long live the king.Copy !req
758. I am what I am.Copy !req
759. Someone has to be.Copy !req
760. Saladin's sister.Copy !req
761. I know.Copy !req
762. I know.Copy !req
763. - Assalamu alaikum.
- Wa alaikum assalam.Copy !req
764. Speak.Copy !req
765. The sultan demands
the return of his sister's body,Copy !req
766. the heads of those responsible
and the surrender of Jerusalem.Copy !req
767. Does he?Copy !req
768. What answer do you return to Saladin?Copy !req
769. This.Copy !req
770. Take the head to Damascus.Copy !req
771. I am Jerusalem.Copy !req
772. Assemble the army!Copy !req
773. Now this assembly of barons
and all Jerusalem is complete.Copy !req
774. There are those among you who may
disagree with our succession, but it is war.Copy !req
775. And I am...Copy !req
776. the king.Copy !req
777. We march at once.Copy !req
778. - What say this council?
- (all) Aye!Copy !req
779. No. if you must have war,
this army cannot move away from water.Copy !req
780. You have a chance to hold the city.Copy !req
781. But if you move out against Saladin,Copy !req
782. this army will be destroyed
and the city left defenceless.Copy !req
