Hard Eight (1996)

1. Hey.

2. Hey.

3. What?

4. Want a cup of coffee?

5. Want a cigarette?

6. What?

7. I'm a guy that's offering to give you a cigarette and buy you a cup of coffee.

8. What's your name?

9. John.

10. Sydney.

11. You want to see the menus?

12. No, I don't think so.

13. Come from Vegas?

14. Reno?

15. From Vegas.

16. You lost some money?

17. No.

18. You won some money?

19. I broke even.

20. What were you playing?

21. Blackjack.

22. You know how to count cards?

23. What?

24. You said you were playing blackjack.

25. Do you know how to count cards?

26. No.

27. In my experience, if you don't know how to count cards,

28. you ought to stay away from blackjack.

29. Well, thanks for the tip, Mr. Helpful.

30. Hey, John.

31. What?

32. Hey, John, we're sitting here.

33. I bought you a cup of coffee. I've given you a cigarette.

34. Hey, John. Look at me.

35. You wanna be a wise ass, go outside and take a seat.

36. If you want to talk to me, if you want to talk to me, well, then...

37. Never ignore a man's courtesy.

38. Let's talk about Vegas.

39. Let's talk about what happened to you, because something did happen.

40. Maybe I can help.

41. You wanna help me?

42. You look like a man that could use a friend.

43. You wanna be my friend?

44. Then give me $6,000.

45. Do you have that?

46. Can you give a total stranger $6,000?

47. Because that's my trouble, okay?

48. What do you need $6,000 for?

49. - I need it. - For what?

50. To bury my mother.

51. You went to Vegas to win some money?

52. No, I went to lose some money.

53. You went to win some money to bury your mother?

54. To pay for her funeral?

55. That is very admirable.

56. I admire the intention.

57. I can't say it's wise, though.

58. Do you have $6,000 to give me?

59. No, I can't.

60. I didn't think so.

61. Isn't there someone who could...

62. Nope.

63. Family?

64. There's no one else, okay? It's me.

65. It's just... I'm alone and that's it, okay?

66. There you go.

67. That gonna be it?

68. Yeah, I think so.

69. Thank you.

70. How much money do you have left?

71. Nothing.

72. If I were to give you $50, what would you do with it?

73. I'd eat.

74. How long can you eat, how long can you live on $50?

75. I don't know.

76. I would bet not very long.

77. You would bet?

78. I tell you what.

79. You come with me back to Vegas, I'll loan you $50,

80. I'll show you what you did wrong.

81. Why? What... Look, what are you, man?

82. You think you're Saint Francis or something?

83. No, I don't think I'm Saint Francis.

84. All right, look, are you looking for a fag?

85. 'Cause I'm not some boy hooker, if that's what you're after.

86. I'm not looking for a hooker, John.

87. I'm offering you a ride.

88. I'm offering to teach you something.

89. Yeah, well, I'm telling you something right now.

90. I don't suck dick, okay?

91. I understand that.

92. And this is the last time I'll ask.

93. Do you want my help?

94. I'll fuck you up if you fuck with me.

95. I know three types of karate, okay?

96. Jujitsu, aikido and regular karate.

97. Okay.

98. All right.

99. A, you give me a ride.

100. Two, you give me 50 bucks.

101. And C, I sit in the back.

102. And believe me, if you pull anything, I will fuck you up.

103. I believe you.

104. This is a nice ride, actually.

105. Comfortable.

106. Can you pull over for a second?

107. Can I get a cigarette from you?

108. Thanks.

109. The lighter there, it doesn't work.

110. Here.

111. No, thanks.

112. Lighter doesn't work.

113. I heard you, I just...

114. I just don't use matches.

115. You want to hold the wheel a minute while I light mine?

116. Thanks.

117. You gonna smoke that?

118. Nope.

119. So why don't you use these matches?

120. It's just a rule with me, okay?

121. I don't use matches.

122. Why not?

123. I had a really bad experience once, and I promised I'd never use them again.

124. Tell me.

125. You know those big monster books of matches, like, those big daddy ones,

126. - with, like, 40 matches in them? - Yeah.

127. I had one of those in my pocket once and they just lit on fire, just exploded.

128. Wow. Matches just went off?

129. Yeah. It was like...

130. It has something to do with friction, I guess. Spontaneous friction.

131. I mean, they just went off.

132. I mean, I'm standing there in line for a movie and all of a sudden, just wham!

133. Like that, you know? Scared the shit out of me.

134. I had a third-degree burn on my leg.

135. It was this close to my dick.

136. And that was a... That was a brand new pair of jeans too, you know.

137. I mean, I thought about suing that match book company, too.

138. You know, what are you gonna do? You know?

139. Things happen. This happens, that happens.

140. Shitjust happens, you know? You just deal with it.

141. John, I'm gonna loan you 50 bucks.

142. So, why don't you tell me what you're gonna do with it?

143. You asked me before, you know, I...

144. Well, you could take it and play it.

145. Play it a certain way, long enough and hard enough to get a bed and a meal.

146. You're not gonna win $6,000, though.

147. I can assure you of that.

148. Well, if you show me how to do that, you know,

149. how to get a meal and get a bed, then I'll do that, you know. I mean,

150. if you wanna show me.

151. The first thing you do is you go in the bathroom, clean yourself up.

152. There's an attendant in there has a razor you can use.

153. Yeah, but I'm growing a beard.

154. Once you're done, find me in the bar.

155. How's that?

156. Much cleaner.

157. Okay?

158. Much better.

159. So, what now?

160. First of all, I lied when I said $50.

161. You're gonna need $150.

162. - I knew it. - Hey, hey, hey.

163. Just relax, John. Listen to me.

164. You listening?

165. You go over there to the slot machines,

166. you go to that woman in the cashier's cage,

167. and you ask her where you can find the floor man.

168. She'll point to a guy in a tuxedo, the floor man.

169. You find this guy, you approach him, and you say...

170. John Finnegan.

171. So, anyway, I just, like... I just flew into town and...

172. You know, I'm gonna be playing this casino.

173. I like this place.

174. And I'm gonna be spending some money and,

175. hey, you know, I hope I win some money.

176. And I just need someone to keep track of what I'm spending,

177. you know, 'cause I'm an impulsive gambler.

178. And... Can I get a rate card?

179. I got it. He gave it to me.

180. Good.

181. You take this $150.

182. You take it to that cashier, and you cash it in for dollar tokens.

183. He'll make a note on the rate card saying the amount you've cashed

184. and the time of day.

185. - Hi. - Hi.

186. I'd like $150 in dollar tokens and there's my rate card.

187. There we are. Good luck.

188. Thanks a lot.

189. Now you're gonna find your slot machine.

190. Find one that's off to the side a bit, but don't go unseen by the floor man.

191. Sit at that machine and you play $20.

192. Only 20, so make it last.

193. Play slowly, $1 at a time.

194. - Hey. - Hey.

195. Did you order a drink?

196. Huh?

197. Did you order a drink?

198. Oh, yeah. They're free.

199. It'll turn out to be a $150 cocktail.

200. Don't drink.

201. Okay. Sorry.

202. It's all right.

203. Did you finish that 20?

204. Almost.

205. Get your stuff. Come with me.

206. Give the cashier $100 in tokens.

207. She'll give you cash. And get a bill.

208. Okay.

209. - Hi. - Hi.

210. I'd like to cash these in, please.

211. Would you like a bill or some 203?

212. Abill.

213. All right.

214. There you are.

215. - Thank you. - You're welcome.

216. Now you're gonna give this cashier the bill and the rate card.

217. And ask for more tokens.

218. - Hi. - Hi.

219. I'd like another $100 in tokens, please.

220. Here's my rate card.

221. There, sir. Good luck.

222. Thank you.

223. So, how much do you have on your rate card now?

224. Well, I cashed $150 first, then another $100, so $250.

225. And you have only spent $20.

226. So, you just keep circling the bill, John.

227. Cash to tokens,

228. tokens to cash.

229. There you are.

230. Now, slowly spend what's left of the $50.

231. But that's just for show when the floor man comes around.

232. All right.

233. Do it for an hour, take a break, do it again for an hour, and so on.

234. See you around.

235. Where?

236. |'|| find you.

237. - Hi. - Hi.

238. Look at that.

239. Started with half of that.

240. We're not as lucky.

241. We're losing big time.

242. - You are? - Yeah.

243. Yeah, I haven't been playing that one.

244. Put a lot in here, though.

245. I'd like to cash these in again for a bill, please.

246. All right.

247. - Good luck. - Thank you.

248. Hey.

249. Oh, well.

250. I need a bucket.

251. I need a bucket.

252. Hi.

253. Guess who.

254. Making a pretty big investment here.

255. I need another 300 in tokens, please.

256. There we are. Good luck.

257. Yeah, I'll need it.

258. Thanks a lot.

259. - Hey. Hey, Sydney. - John.

260. Hey, I kept doing that until I racked up two grand on the rate card.

261. And it worked. They gave me a room.

262. I totally got a room.

263. The guy comes up to me and he's like, "Can I get you anything, sir?"

264. You know, "Do you want a room?

265. "Can I get you tickets to a show?"

266. I got two tickets to a show.

267. I got you one.

268. Plus, that machine I was playing?

269. I accidentally hit it for 200 bucks.

270. - It works. - Fucking A it does.

271. This what you do?

272. Not any more.

273. Shit, Sydney. This is... This is great, I mean, really.

274. Thank you, thanks a lot.

275. You're welcome.

276. Oh, I got that...

277. The $150 that you gave me.

278. All right?

279. Good.

280. You want to hang out? I got pay-per-view movies,

281. and I got a mini-bar.

282. - It's got all sorts of stuff in it. - No, thanks, John.

283. So, John, what are you gonna do?

284. I don't know. I was...

285. I don't know.

286. Well, you can't keep doing the same thing all week.

287. Yeah, I didn't think so.

288. Sydney.

289. I was gonna ask you...

290. You know, I was wondering...

291. I mean, I know you showed me all this stuff, you know,

292. you taught me.

293. But I... I still have to...

294. You can't win $6,000, John.

295. I told you that before.

296. I don't know what I'm gonna do.

297. I... I have a friend in Los Angeles, someone...

298. Maybe someone who can help.

299. I can make a call for you, tell him you're a friend, so on and so forth.

300. Maybe we can work this thing out here.

301. I think if you need help paying for your mother's funeral, we can work it out.

302. I want you to see that my reasons for doing this

303. are not selfish, only this,

304. I'd hope that you would do the same for me.

305. I would.

306. Thank you.

307. It's always good to meet a new friend.

308. I'll see you later.

309. Are you gonna gamble?

310. Yeah.

311. Can I come down with you?

312. If that's what you want.

313. Yeah, just to watch, you know.

314. Cupid.

315. Cupid has found its way. Good to see you.

316. If there's anything you want,

317. please don't call me.

318. - Keno? - How are you?

319. - Keno? - Things are going well for you?

320. Keno?

321. Keno?

322. Yeah.

323. Play $2, please. Thanks.

324. - Hello, Captain. - Hello again.

325. Do you remember my name?

326. Clementine.

327. - That's right. - Just like the movie.

328. Exactly.

329. Do you remember my name?

330. Sydney.

331. Then why do you call me Captain?

332. Because you seem like the captain of a ship to me, you know?

333. I see the way John follows you and worships you, like you're his captain.

334. John is a very old friend.

335. Good luck, sir.

336. - Thank you. - Thank you.

337. Boy, you're a good tipper, Captain.

338. Tell me something.

339. Are you required to flirt,

340. to behave as you do toward that table of men over there,

341. maybe as some part of your job?

342. They don't say to do it.

343. But if you don't...

344. Well, then I get questioned, like,

345. "Why were you so rude to them?"

346. And I mean, I can't talk back.

347. I can't tell them to fuck off and leave me alone.

348. As a rule.

349. I'd also lose the tip.

350. Sounds like an occupational hazard.

351. Well, you don't have to do that with me.

352. Jimmy paid for your drink.

353. Thank you.

354. Thank you, Captain.

355. - Hey, thanks. - You want another?

356. Yeah.

357. I'll have whatever Syd's having.

358. Hi.

359. Hello.

360. Syd, you remember Jimmy.

361. He's a friend. He lives up here.

362. Jimmy. Thanks for the drink.

363. Hey, my pleasure.

364. Have a seat.

365. Jimmy works over at the Sand Dunes.

366. Oh, yeah, I remember.

367. What do you... You do what?

368. Well, I do some consulting over there.

369. You know, security on busy nights.

370. Parking lot?

371. No, no, I work inside the casino.

372. He saw you playing Vegas a few years back.

373. Jimmy, tell him.

374. Yeah, yeah. See, I used to live there.

375. I saw you playing crap over at the original Dunes.

376. You bet the hard eight for $1,000 and you pressed it for two.

377. - Did I hit it? - Nah, you didn't hit it.

378. But it was a big-balls bet, and I remembered yourface.

379. Stupid bet.

380. You were with that old dude with the... With the voice thing.

381. He talks like that. What's his name?

382. Excuse me.

383. Say, partner, let me get one of them cigarettes.

384. Oh, damn, you ain't got no menthol?

385. No, man, I don't do menthol.

386. Shit.

387. All right, let me get a light, too.

388. So you gave up big-balls bets on the hard way to play keno, huh?

389. What's that, a sign of aging?

390. It passes the time.

391. Syd and I saw a guy win 38 grand playing keno once.

392. Played all day, sat in the same spot, something like 12 hours.

393. Must have cost him 4 grand to win the 38, but, Jesus...

394. The other night over at the Eldorado,

395. I saw a cat have a heart attack

396. right at the craps table.

397. I mean, he's in the middle of a hot shoot,

398. starts getting all bothered and sweaty and shit,

399. next thing you know...

400. Old motherfucker just keels over.

401. Now, the joke of it is, the game just keeps going on.

402. I mean, people are yelling, "Place the eight!"

403. "Somebody call an ambulance!" "Place the nine!"Place the six!"

404. "Somebody dial 9-1-1!"

405. Meanwhile, this old bastard's laying on the floor, tongue out,

406. turning purple and shit. Like... And people are still playing!

407. Keno.

408. Keno, any winners?

409. No, not here.

410. But let's try it again.

411. Jesus, we are fucking surrounded by pussy here.

412. Hey, hey, hey, Jimmy.

413. - What? - It's not for my ears, but hers.

414. She can hear that sort of thing across the lounge.

415. It puts her in a very uncomfortable position.

416. Hey, hey, I doubt if hearing she's got a great pussy

417. puts her in an uncomfortable position.

418. I just don't want it coming from my table.

419. I don't know if you knew this, but, you know,

420. half the women that work here are take-home whores anyway.

421. They get off on that shit.

422. I got a friend, works over at the Sand Dunes, where I work.

423. This man's in charge of corralling

424. all the cocktail waitresses for that sort of thing.

425. I mean, he's in charge.

426. He is the pussy patrol.

427. - Jimmy. - What?

428. Just, you know...

429. Hey, I live up here. I know what flies and what don't.

430. You know, to tell a babe she's got a nice ass is no crime, believe me.

431. You said it as she walked away.

432. Hey, Jimmy, let's go play.

433. We're waiting on our drinks here.

434. Yeah, we'll get them at the tables.

435. You got a point.

436. Sydney, it was a pleasure seeing you again.

437. John here's got my digits.

438. Anything you need in this town, you call me.

439. Syd, I'll see you later.

440. I'll be here.

441. One more time. One more time.

442. - How you doing? - Good, Sydney. How are you today?

443. Hi.

444. What are you doing out here?

445. Fresh air.

446. I was... I was just visiting my friend.

447. But we're not supposed to be in the rooms, you know, so...

448. I could lose my job.

449. But you'd be fired if you told them to leave you alone?

450. This is something... I mean, if the hotel knew...

451. Do you live alone?

452. Yeah. I do now.

453. I had this girlfriend, this roommate.

454. But it's a big nightmare story.

455. Do you go to school?

456. No.

457. Do I look like I go to school?

458. I don't know, maybe.

459. I'm not with all that, you know...

460. What are you saving up for?

461. Your job, the money that you make, are you saving?

462. No. I mean, I have to make money, you know.

463. I have bills. I have an apartment that I have to pay for.

464. I have a car. I have a Camaro.

465. I mean, that costs money, you know?

466. Every month I have to pay my bills, and if I don't then my credit gets fucked up.

467. And I can't have fucked-up credit, because then I'm fucked.

468. You look at me as a piece of shit now,

469. because you saw me coming out of that room.

470. No, I don't.

471. Just a good girl, you know, trying to save up, open a beauty salon.

472. Maybe that, yes.

473. I don't know.

474. I don't want to open a fucking beauty salon.

475. It's just... It's so much different than what you think.

476. Explain it to me, then.

477. I don't... I don't do anything that I don't want to do.

478. You understand?

479. Are you...

480. Are you gonna tell John that you saw me?

481. No. I'm not.

482. So, I wanna know, like,

483. how do you know him?

484. Hey.

485. So you took care of him?

486. Sort of.

487. And you paid for her funeral?

488. We worked it out.

489. I think he's pretty adorable, the way he follows you around and looks up to you.

490. He orders the same drinks as you, you know?

491. He dresses the same.

492. We share the same tastes, I guess.

493. So, do you have real kids, like, kids of your own?

494. Yes.

495. You married?

496. A boy and a girl, I... No, I'm divorced.

497. I have a boy about your age.

498. A daughter, two years older.

499. Where do they live?

500. Well, I'm not sure. I haven't spoken to them in a while.

501. Well, that's too bad.

502. Yeah.

503. Maybe you'll see them.

504. - Maybe. - Fuck this! I'm out of here!

505. I'm going to...

506. I'll get a robe and some shorts or something.

507. Here's a robe and some stuff for you.

508. Captain?

509. Yeah.

510. Do you want to fuck me?

511. Do you think that?

512. Well, you brought me here.

513. Do you think that?

514. I don't know.

515. Well, you should know before you ask a question like that.

516. Well, it seems like you're being nice to me and...

517. So, you'd think that I would want that.

518. Well, if you wanted to fuck me then...

519. Stop saying that.

520. It just seemed like...

521. Well, don't let it seem that way.

522. This is a comfortable bed for you.

523. I want you to sleep on it,

524. to give you something, to...

525. A place to have a nice shower and a bed.

526. Don't get angry.

527. No. I'm not,

528. because I understand how you could ask a question like that.

529. Now you really look at me as a piece of shit.

530. No.

531. All right.

532. John won't be back until very late.

533. He won't disturb you.

534. This is John's room?

535. Not tonight.

536. Like, boom, it fucking exploded right in my pants.

537. It totally burned a hole.

538. - The matches went off? - Yeah.

539. I could have, like, caught on fire.

540. Hey, Captain.

541. Morning, Captain.

542. Good morning.

543. Yeah. Captain.

544. That is a nickname that Clementine has given me.

545. That is not for you.

546. Okay.

547. So, what are you gonna do today?

548. Oh, I don't know.

549. But if you want to do something, I mean, if you want to go someplace

550. or buy something, John'll take you.

551. Yeah? You need something?

552. I mean, just to go home and get some clothes.

553. So why don't you go to the mall?

554. Buy something nice.

555. Here.

556. No, I got it, Syd. I got money.

557. Oh, okay.

558. So, you wanna go? You wanna get something?

559. Yeah. I mean, yeah.

560. And that is that.

561. See you later.

562. - Bye. - Bye.

563. - Bye. - Bye.

564. Well?

565. Why do you have two TVs?

566. Oh, well, see, they got pay-per-view here.

567. That's this box.

568. And there's a wire that comes up from the front desk

569. that goes through this box, and then when you turn it on,

570. when you pick a pay movie,

571. it tells the front desk that you got a pay movie.

572. So, what you have to do is take... Get these little things off.

573. You stick a key inside this little cuff right here and twist it around.

574. And then you take the wire that comes right out of the wall

575. that brings the movie.

576. You take that and you put it straight into the TV.

577. So, you gotta use a regular TV, so I bring this one with me

578. wherever we go, and I just take the cable

579. that comes from the wall, straight into this TV.

580. And you get free movies.

581. Cool.

582. But don't... Don't say anything to, like, to, you know, the front desk or anything.

583. No, I won't.

584. 'Cause they'd probably make me pay for all of them.

585. So...

586. I got to go talk to Syd for a second, all right?

587. I'll be right back.

588. Okay.

589. - Hey. - Hey.

590. How'd you do last night?

591. Fair.

592. You?

593. Oh, I won about $300.

594. You didn't show up in the bar.

595. Oh, I'm sorry about that, Syd.

596. I was... I was with Jimmy, you know.

597. Yeah.

598. I'm sorry about last night.

599. He gets... The second drink, you know? He just...

600. It's not a problem.

601. Yeah, he just gets a little flagrant, you know.

602. It's fine.

603. He thinks you don't like him.

604. I don't.

605. Well.

606. What?

607. - I don't know. - Hey, you be good to Clementine today.

608. You take her anywhere she wants to go.

609. Did...

610. What?

611. - What? - You know, did you?

612. No.

613. Okay.

614. Good.

615. Good. All right. I'll see you later, all right?

616. Yeah, I'll probably be in the sports book or maybe poker.

617. Okay, maybe I'll see you there.

618. - Okay. - All right. Bye.

619. Excuse me.

620. Oh.

621. - Can I get you anything else? - No, that's fine. Thanks.

622. Okay.

623. Seven the winner. Pay him on the passline.

624. Winner, seven.

625. Coming out again. Bet 11 after seven.

626. Come on, old timer, you gonna join us here, my friend?

627. Come on.

628. I don't wait for old people I don't wait for old people

629. All right, here we go. Let's see another seven.

630. Go!

631. Eight easy, eight brought on. A point of eight.

632. Bet it back hard.

633. Okay, I'm gonna light a cigarette now, old timer.

634. See, the thing is, I like you.

635. I'm gonna light a cigarette, and I'm gonna let

636. you have this time to place your bet

637. before I finish lighting this cigarette.

638. And then when I finish lighting, I'm just gonna roll and fuck you.

639. You're laughing at that? I just said fuck you to the man.

640. Jesus Christ.

641. The way you look, I think you know what I'm saying, old timer.

642. I think you do.

643. Jesus Christ, why don't you have some fun?

644. Fun! Fun!

645. All right, shaka-lakka-doo, shaka-lakka-doobey-doobey-doo.

646. Shaka-lakka-doo.

647. Here, got a little bit more, there.

648. Coming in there, baby.

649. Shaka-lakka-doo, baby.

650. I'm almost lighting it, baby.

651. I'm gonna light the cigarette, old timer. What are you gonna do?

652. $2,000, hard eight.

653. $2,000, hard eight's the bet.

654. What the fuck!

655. Oh, man, you play that game, don't you?

656. Oh, shit.

657. You're big time.

658. You are big time!

659. Oh, hard eight, hard eight.

660. Oh, okay, here we go.

661. All right, here we go.

662. All right, this is for you, big time.

663. All right, I'm not even looking. Here we go!

664. Six the hard way, a hard six.

665. Hard six, that's a hard six, old timer.

666. That's not bad for me.

667. That's not bad for me, is it, sister?

668. Is it, Sister Sledge?

669. There we go. It's me and you.

670. You know what I'm saying?

671. Fucking $100, hard eight.

672. Hundred. Me and you, big time.

673. Me and you.

674. You can buy yourself another suit with this roll.

675. Forty-fou r.

676. Forty-four, big time.

677. Two thousand.

678. Two thousand. Hundred. Hundred.

679. Two thousand. Two thousand. Hundred. Hundred.

680. Two thousand.

681. Forty-four!

682. Eight easy. Easy eight.

683. Five and a three, it's a front-line winner. Pay him.

684. Fuck!

685. Fuck!

686. Hard eight.

687. All right, shit.

688. I'm sorry, big time.

689. Hey, big time, I'll buy you a drink.

690. Big winner.

691. Yeah.

692. Where?

693. Yeah, yes.

694. Right now?

695. Are you okay?

696. Yeah, yeah.

697. Yeah, I'll... Yeah, I'm getting up right now. Right now.

698. John?

699. Syd?

700. Yeah, open up.

701. Everything cool?

702. What? Yeah, everything's cool.

703. Are you all right?

704. I'm fine.

705. You gonna open the door?

706. I said on the phone, you know,

707. it's kind of screwed up.

708. Yeah, so? Open the door.

709. Let's see what's going on.

710. You promise you'll help me?

711. John, it's cold out here. Open the door.

712. Is everything cool?

713. John, open the goddamn door, will you?

714. - So, what's going on, John? - Shut the door.

715. - Why are the lights out? - Okay, Syd...

716. - Hey, I'm not gonna... - Just leave them off

717. - for a second. Okay? - John, I'm not gonna

718. stand here with the lights out.

719. Okay, now, you promised you'd help me.

720. What is this, John?

721. I'm sorry, Syd.

722. John, what is this?

723. Who is this man?

724. He's...

725. He's a hostage.

726. - A hostage? - Yeah.

727. Why?

728. Because...

729. For money.

730. Is he dead?

731. No, he's just passed out.

732. How did he get here?

733. I'm sorry, Syd.

734. Fuck.

735. I'm so sorry.

736. I fucked up. I know, I know it.

737. I'm sorry.

738. Clementine.

739. - Clementine? - She doesn't want to talk.

740. Clementine, hey.

741. What?

742. You all right?

743. I'm fine.

744. Tell me what happened.

745. This man won't pay me.

746. You know this man?

747. No, not before tonight. I mean...

748. Then how does he owe you money?

749. I met him in a bar.

750. We came here.

751. You came here, what, for sex?

752. He won't pay me what we agreed.

753. - How did John get here? - You can ask me.

754. - Clementine? - She called me.

755. I asked him to come help me.

756. This fucker hit her, Syd!

757. Clementine, let me see.

758. Come on, let me see.

759. You're okay.

760. How long you been here, John?

761. Me? Since 10:00.

762. So, why don't you just let him go?

763. What do you mean? We can't.

764. Tell me why, John.

765. Because he owes her money, that's why.

766. Yeah, so? How much money?

767. $300.

768. You're holding this guy hostage for $300?

769. That's what he owes her.

770. This fuckhead cheated her, Syd.

771. Who knows this man is here?

772. Well, me and Clementine

773. and you.

774. Yeah? And?

775. - And his wife. - His wife?

776. Well, someone's got to get the money, Syd!

777. I don't understand.

778. How did you get in touch with his wife?

779. He's staying at the Sand Dunes.

780. I got the name from the wallet, and Clementine saw her there before.

781. You talked to this woman? You talked to this man's wife?

782. Yeah, I called her and told her to get the money.

783. She said she would.

784. Did you tell her where you were?

785. We're not stupid.

786. No, of course. You're not stupid.

787. Are you gonna help us?

788. So? What do you want me to do?

789. I don't know.

790. All right, first of all, this guy's wife has obviously called the cops.

791. - Do you understand that? - No, not necessarily.

792. Yes, necessarily!

793. No, she wants to deal with it as much as we do, Syd.

794. She's not gonna tell the cops

795. that her husband was, you know, fucking...

796. Fuck!

797. I mean, she might not, right? She might not!

798. What'd you tell her, John?

799. What? I just said that we...

800. We would call her and tell her what to do.

801. No, no, no.

802. Did you tell her that you'd kill him if she didn't?

803. What'd you tell her?

804. - Yeah. - Yeah, what, John?

805. I told her we'd kill him.

806. This is a very fucked-up situation here.

807. - You promised you'd help me. - I didn't promise anything.

808. Yeah, yeah, at the door. Come on.

809. Syd, you gotta help me.

810. You don't have to help us.

811. I sure as hell don't.

812. Then why don't you just get the fuck out of here?

813. Oh, good. Good.

814. You got yourself in this situation.

815. I did not get you here.

816. So, you humble yourself, do you understand?

817. You humble yourself!

818. Give me the fucking gun, John.

819. Jesus Christ.

820. Give it to me.

821. - Is it loaded? - No.

822. Where'd you get it?

823. - From Jimmy. - Jimmy?

824. - Has Jimmy been here? - No.

825. - What does Jimmy know about this? - Nothing.

826. Don't say that, John.

827. I'm not.

828. - What? What are you saying? - Nothing.

829. Clementine, get in the chair, will you?

830. Come on. Come on, come on.

831. Now, you are gonna answer every question I ask you to.

832. Don't look at John. Look at me.

833. Now, when you left the hotel this morning, where did you go?

834. We went shopping at the mall.

835. After that?

836. We went to my house.

837. Why?

838. Because I wanted to get some clothes.

839. I told you to buy clothes.

840. I wanted to go get something!

841. All right, after that, what?

842. Syd, just ask me.

843. We had sex.

844. Then, yes, what?

845. Look, I know you're trying to figure this whole thing out, okay?

846. But what happened this morning doesn't matter.

847. |'|| judge that.

848. Fine, then just ask me what happened.

849. Okay, I would like to understand how you go from being in the bar

850. at the Sand Dunes with that guy to being in here.

851. Where did this thing go wrong?

852. Because he thought that he was smart

853. and I was stupid, and I'm not stupid.

854. Well, this a pretty stupid situation, isn't it?

855. Well, we'll see how fucking stupid I am when I get my money, won't we?

856. You know the first thing they should have taught you at hooker school?

857. You get the money up front.

858. Fuck you.

859. - Syd, don't talk to her like that. - John,

860. I'm having a conversation with Clementine, all right?

861. - Yeah, well, don't talk to her like that. - John, shut the fuck up!

862. - Hey, I'm warning you, Syd! - Get your fucking hands off me!

863. Don't fucking talk to her like that!

864. She's my wife!

865. She's... We got married this afternoon.

866. You bitch! You're fucking dead, you bitch!

867. Right?

868. I am glad to see you are having a wonderful honeymoon.

869. Syd! Syd! What? Wait. Where are you going?

870. I'm getting out of here.

871. Syd! Syd! Don't leave, don't leave, please.

872. John, I can't get involved in this.

873. Yeah, but you don't have to be involved. Just don't leave.

874. John, if I stay here, I am involved.

875. If I stay here, I am part of it.

876. - Do you get that? - Okay.

877. Now, let's just go back inside, okay?

878. John, you've got a guy unconscious in there.

879. A guy that you... A guy you kidnapped and are holding for ransom.

880. Do you realize how fucking serious this is?

881. All right, look, John,

882. if you want to leave here, if you want me to help you get as far away

883. from here as possible,

884. then you just get in your car and go.

885. Yeah? Let's do that, John.

886. Let's just get in the car.

887. Well, where am I gonna go?

888. I don't know, John. Away. Anywhere. Away.

889. How could you let her go and do a thing like this, John?

890. You've got money. This is not good.

891. Syd...

892. We were at the bar.

893. I fucking turn around and she's gone.

894. You know, I didn't know she...

895. What do you think? I didn't know.

896. Did you really get married, John? Did you?

897. Yeah.

898. You know, she said yes.

899. I didn't want her to say no later on, you know?

900. You know, I've been seeing her for two months,

901. and I never had the guts to say anything.

902. And I saw her in my bed this morning,

903. it was like a sign from heaven, you know?

904. I know this is fucked up.

905. I'm not stupid. I know I fucked up. Okay?

906. I mean, she's got some problems, I know. But I really love her.

907. What it... What am I gonna do? I love her, Syd.

908. Okay, okay, okay.

909. Everything's going to be fine, John.

910. Everything's going to work out, you'll see.

911. Okay? Come on, come on.

912. Let's go.

913. All right, come on, we're gonna go, we're gonna leave.

914. Syd thinks we should leave, so...

915. Get your purse, Clem, and put your coat on.

916. Why is he doing that?

917. I'm getting rid of your fingerprints.

918. This guy saw us.

919. Well, maybe he'll wake up and he won't remember.

920. If he doesn't remember when he wakes up,

921. then why are we leaving?

922. If he does, the cops are gonna come, Clem,

923. and they're gonna check.

924. I'm not going anywhere.

925. Look, we don't have a choice.

926. John, I'm gonna tell you something right now.

927. This man owes me. He fucked me, and now he's gonna pay me.

928. Don't be crazy, all right? Don't be crazy, honey.

929. I mean, this is the only thing that we can do, okay?

930. This is the only thing that we have a chance at right now, is if we leave.

931. Syd?

932. I'll tell you that you can go, but I'm not.

933. Oh, you wanna get caught?

934. You wanna go to jail?

935. I want my money.

936. Clem...

937. Clem, look at me, please.

938. Let's just listen to Sydney, okay?

939. Syd knows. He knows.

940. I won't tell them about you,

941. if that's what you're thinking, if I get caught.

942. Jesus Christ, Clem, that's not why.

943. What do you want me to say?

944. What do I have to fucking say? I love you.

945. You wanna stay here

946. with this fucking idiot?

947. You wanna be separated from our marriage, from me?

948. I don't care.

949. Well, fuck you then!

950. You stupid fucking whore!

951. Fuck you, John!

952. Oh, Jesus, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Clem. Oh, God!

953. Jesus Christ, John.

954. Stop it.

955. Clementine.

956. My darling Clementine. Listen to me, will you?

957. Are you listening?

958. If you stay here, you will be caught.

959. Okay? We're talking about kidnapping, extortion.

960. Other things, I don't know what,

961. but not good things, honey.

962. Okay, honey? Clementine, look at me, will you?

963. Come on. Come on, here, look at me.

964. Do you love John?

965. He slapped my face.

966. Do you love him?

967. Yes.

968. All right, you've got that.

969. You love him and he loves you,

970. and you're not gonna spoil it on this bullshit.

971. All right.

972. Okay. Where'd you get the handcuffs?

973. - They're mine. - Give me the key.

974. - What for? - I have to unlock him.

975. - Did you hit him with the gun? - Yeah.

976. All right, come on. Let's get out of here.

977. Come on, Clementine.

978. Hey, don't forget your cigarettes and your lighter.

979. Let's go.

980. Who's that, John? Who's calling?

981. I don't know.

982. What do you mean you don't know?

983. Syd, I don't know, okay?

984. Who knows you're here?

985. I don't know, maybe the guy's wife. I don't know, Syd.

986. It's... It's the front desk. I don't know, man!

987. John, don't fuck with me.

988. Syd, I'm not fucking with you.

989. It's the front desk. I don't know!

990. Jimmy knows we're here.

991. Look, Jimmy knows we're here, but it doesn't matter, all right?

992. Let's just go. Let's go.

993. Let's go!

994. Right.

995. Now, let's go.

996. - Syd, I'm sorry about Jimmy... - We'll talk about it later.

997. Get your car. Follow me to Clementine's.

998. She's coming with me.

999. Now, tell me. A man checked into the motel.

1000. - Yes? Tell me that. - Yes.

1001. Did anybody see you? The man behind the counter?

1002. No.

1003. What about in the bar? At the Sand Dunes?

1004. No. I mean, it was packed. It was full of people.

1005. The guy had a specific friend, maybe, sitting at the bar?

1006. No.

1007. Right over there.

1008. Syd, I'm on the street.

1009. Are you okay?

1010. I'm really scared.

1011. I know.

1012. You be strong now.

1013. Take good care of John.

1014. Oh, my God, I'm so embarrassed.

1015. I'm so embarrassed, oh, my God.

1016. I feel like I might piss my pants.

1017. I have two cats.

1018. I remember.

1019. Will you feed them while I'm gone?

1020. Sure.

1021. Okay.

1022. The yellow key is for the top lock, okay?

1023. The red one is for the bottom one,

1024. but you can't put it all the way in or else it won't open when you turn it, okay?

1025. And just one can and put it in the bowl. And water.

1026. Okay.

1027. There's something... For you, we...

1028. It's our wedding. We had it taped, we thought...

1029. Oh, that's nice.

1030. Thank you.

1031. I don't know. God, I don't know why I did this.

1032. Hey, hey, hey.

1033. I'm so stupid.

1034. - It's okay. - Fuck.

1035. No, it's okay.

1036. Everything's going to be all right.

1037. I'm ready.

1038. All right, you've just got married.

1039. You're on your honeymoon.

1040. Wait, what about my job?

1041. I'll talk to the casino.

1042. I'll tell them that you've fallen in love,

1043. that you've eloped and run off, but that you'll come back.

1044. So, you call me when you get there, and we'll see where things are.

1045. Okay.

1046. - You got money? - Yeah.

1047. Okay. I'll get you more money as you need it,

1048. as much as I have, as much as you'll need.

1049. Do you understand? As much money as I have.

1050. All right, where are you gonna go?

1051. I don't know.

1052. Okay, why don't you go to...

1053. Oh, shit, God damn, I don't know.

1054. - Vegas? - No, Jesus Christ, John!

1055. Don't go to Vegas.

1056. Go to...

1057. What about Niagara Falls?

1058. Yeah, Niagara Falls, that's fine.

1059. No, no, not Niagara Falls.

1060. - Why not? - Why not?

1061. - I've been there before. - Jesus Christ, John.

1062. But Niagara Falls is like a regular honeymoon place.

1063. - Yeah, but I've been there. - John, John.

1064. - Go to Niagara Falls. - Okay.

1065. Hey, give me a hug, will you?

1066. - See you soon. - Okay.

1067. It's gonna be all right, John.

1068. Hey, John, look at me, will you?

1069. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you.

1070. John, this is fine.

1071. Okay.

1072. Take good care of Clementine.

1073. I will.

1074. And drive the speed limit.

1075. Yeah.

1076. You tired?

1077. Not really.

1078. If you want to get it annulled or...

1079. Do you?

1080. No.

1081. I won't fuck up again, John.

1082. I really won't. I promise you.

1083. And now, if you know of nothing either legal or moral

1084. to forbid your union in marriage,

1085. I wish to take its vows and assume its obligations.

1086. Please face each other and join your hands.

1087. Will you, John, have this woman,

1088. Clementine, whose hand you hold,

1089. to be your wedded wife,

1090. and solemnly promise that

1091. you will loyal/y fulfill your obligations as her husband,

1092. to protect her, honor her, love her and cherish her?

1093. I do.

1094. Will you, Clementine, have this man, John,

1095. whose hand you hold, to be your wedded husband

1096. and solemnly promise that you

1097. will be unto him a tender, loving and true wife

1098. through sunshine and shadow alike,

1099. and be faithful to him so long as you both shall live?

1100. I do.

1101. You may seal your vows with a kiss.

1102. I'd like to introduce Mr. and Mrs. John Finnegan.

1103. Okay.

1104. - Thank you. - Bless you.

1105. - Thank you. - Thanks very much.

1106. Thanks a lot. Thank you.

1107. Congratulations to you.

1108. Oh, man, hey.

1109. Could you please not smoke in here?

1110. No, seriously. Could you please not smoke in here?

1111. You know, the smoke smell gets in the upholstery.

1112. It fucks up the resale value like crazy.

1113. What do you want from me?

1114. I want you to put that goddamn cigarette out.

1115. Well, I'm not gonna put the cigarette out.

1116. All right.

1117. Can I have one then?

1118. So you got my note.

1119. What am I saying? No, you just guessed I was out here.

1120. Of course you got my note.

1121. What do you want?

1122. Nothing.

1123. Do you have something to say to me?

1124. You know, that was a really fucked-up situation back there.

1125. I mean you... You took care of it.

1126. So, John and Clementine are safe.

1127. Yes?

1128. You were there.

1129. Just for a minute.

1130. Do you know that guy?

1131. Guy? Oh! The guy that fucked Clementine.

1132. No. Hell, no. No.

1133. I saw him today, though.

1134. You saw him?

1135. In the casino this morning.

1136. He was walking around like nothing happened.

1137. Maybe he didn't call the cops.

1138. He didn't.

1139. You're so sure.

1140. Hey, I was here all night and all day.

1141. If they were here, I would have seen them.

1142. The motel's right across the street.

1143. This guy's just trying to avoid a personal embarrassment.

1144. What about his wife?

1145. Well, now, he may have some explaining to do there.

1146. So you don't think that she called the cops, huh?

1147. Look, if they'd a been here, I'd a seen them.

1148. This guy see you?

1149. Nah. He was knocked out by the time I got there.

1150. You gave John a gun.

1151. Hey, he was scared. He thought he might need it.

1152. It wasn't loaded.

1153. I wouldn't give John a loaded weapon.

1154. You, you still got my gun?

1155. I threw it away.

1156. Oh, damn.

1157. I loved that gun.

1158. Why do you want to talk to me?

1159. That's all right you threw my gun away.

1160. You know, I have others, you know.

1161. Look, I was there with John and Clementine, and you were there, too.

1162. You want something now?

1163. Hey, I ain't call you here

1164. to say I know about this situation

1165. and I'm gonna squawk unless I get a piece of the pie.

1166. John's a friend.

1167. Clementine, she's a doll.

1168. And you? Hey, you're a classic.

1169. You're an old timer.

1170. I got some respectability for that.

1171. What is there to get, anyway?

1172. Yeah.

1173. So now, what then?

1174. 80, John and Clementine

1175. are on their way to safety in Niagara Falls.

1176. So, everything's all right, huh?

1177. When did you talk to them?

1178. Last night.

1179. Look, this motel thing's got nothing to do with nothing any more.

1180. I mean, shit. Thankfully, that's done.

1181. That's over.

1182. I didn't mention it in my note,

1183. but you should be aware

1184. that I know some things aboutAtlantic City.

1185. I mean, I'm from Back East originally.

1186. You didn't know that, but

1187. I know some things aboutAtlantic City.

1188. Where you going?

1189. Sydney! Syd!

1190. Hey, I said something to you. Don't walk away from me.

1191. I said I heard the story about Atlantic City.

1192. What? What? What? What?

1193. Tough guy, huh? You can tell me? You can tell me what?

1194. I haven't told John, but I know about Atlantic City.

1195. You shot his father in the face!

1196. Shit.

1197. - Turn it off. - Don't!

1198. Turn the car off, man, or I'll shoot you!

1199. I swear to God, I will shoot you in the foot and let it bleed.

1200. Now, turn it off!

1201. Now, John doesn't know you killed his father, but I will tell him.

1202. I will tell John. I'm threatening you with the word, do you understand?

1203. - Yes. - Do you want me to do it?

1204. - No. - Then I want $10,000

1205. - to keep my mouth shut for you. - I don't have

1206. - $10,000, Jimmy. - Bullshit! Yes, you do.

1207. - No, I don't have it. - I'll go to Niagara Falls and tell him.

1208. No, no. Don't! Please don't!

1209. $10,000, Sydney.

1210. All right, I'll get it.

1211. Yes, you will.

1212. - When? - I want it now!

1213. No, no, I can't now. It's impossible.

1214. - Bullshit! - No, not right now. It's not possible.

1215. It just isn't possible.

1216. - Are you telling me no? - No, I...

1217. - Is that what you're saying to me? - No, no, no, no.

1218. You fucking idiot. You don't know me.

1219. I will put bullets in you for it.

1220. - Do you understand? - All right, I'll get it tomorrow.

1221. No, no, no. You can't get it tomorrow. You have to get it now.

1222. - You got it? - Please don't point the gun at me.

1223. - I want the money now! You hear me? - No, no, no!

1224. I want the money now!

1225. Just don't point the gun, Jimmy! Please!

1226. Call me a tough guy, huh? Huh?

1227. - Jesus Christ, Jimmy! - Well, I am a tough guy!

1228. This gun in your face is real tough, ain't it?

1229. Look, I... $6,000.

1230. That's what I have, all right? I'll give you all that I have.

1231. - Then that's what you'll give me. - Okay. When?

1232. Don't... Don't do this to me.

1233. Where's the money?

1234. It's in the bank, Jimmy. I have it. It's in the bank.

1235. Come on, come on, come on. Sit over here.

1236. - Sit in this glass, it's yours. - Okay. Okay.

1237. All right.

1238. Sit on the sofa.

1239. You got a cigarette?

1240. You want some coffee?

1241. No.

1242. Anything?

1243. No.

1244. Now, we're gonna be here till John calls

1245. or the bank opens in the morning, you understand?

1246. Now, you got to understand that

1247. this is not easy for me.

1248. John's a friend.

1249. You're his friend.

1250. Now, what I mean...

1251. What I believe is that you killed his father

1252. like the stories I heard go.

1253. Now, if somebody killed my father, well,

1254. I would feel the need to do something.

1255. Now, the stories I heard, and you know,

1256. stories get around, is that you used to be a hard ass.

1257. You were a hard ass, and you took his dad out, Sydney.

1258. So you think, what, that you can just

1259. walk through this life

1260. without being punished for it?

1261. Shit, man.

1262. I know all those guys you know.

1263. Floyd Gondoli, Jimmy Gator, Mumbles O'Malley.

1264. They like to sit around in Clifton's and talk, talk, talk, talk.

1265. They love to tell stories.

1266. Yeah, you can sit there and look at me sideways all you want.

1267. You probably think I'm some kind of asshole or something,

1268. but I'm not a killer

1269. like you.

1270. You walk around like you're Mr. Cool,

1271. Mr. Wisdom, but you're not.

1272. You're just some old hood.

1273. The other night in the bar,

1274. asking me a question like,

1275. do I do parking lot security?

1276. Well, the answer is no!

1277. I'm trusted security inside the casino.

1278. I'm trusted with security, and I don't fuck it up.

1279. Good that you have such a sturdy sense of responsibility.

1280. Don't, don't, don't...

1281. Don't fucking do that, you understand?

1282. I can see right through that shit.

1283. You look at me as some, some idiot, huh?

1284. I know you do. I know you.

1285. You old guys, man, you old hoods.

1286. You think you're so fucking above it.

1287. 80 high and mighty.

1288. And what am I to you?

1289. Some loser?

1290. No.

1291. No! Not with a gun in my hand.

1292. Not with the facts I know.

1293. Bottom line, Sydney.

1294. No matter how hard you try,

1295. you're not his father.

1296. I have the money here.

1297. I have the $6,000 here, not in the bank.

1298. I have it here.

1299. I knew that.

1300. I knew you did.

1301. I have the money to give you right now, in this moment.

1302. I will give you all that I have.

1303. Maybe before you were going to kill me.

1304. Maybe. I don't know.

1305. I know John, and I love him like he was my own child,

1306. but I can tell you this, I don't want to die.

1307. I killed his father.

1308. I can tell you what it was, I... This is not an excuse.

1309. I'm not begging for clemency.

1310. All that matters...

1311. I do not wish to sacrifice my life for John's well-being,

1312. but I will sacrifice this money for mine because you have asked me.

1313. Because after this,

1314. I will have done all I can for John and for myself.

1315. Now, I'm going to ask you with all

1316. the heart and sincerity that I have.

1317. Please do not put a bullet in me,

1318. and please don't tell John what I've done.

1319. I trust that once I give you this money,

1320. you and I will take separate paths

1321. and that this negotiation will settle everything.

1322. That is my hope.

1323. I don't want to die.

1324. No, no, man. Not here.

1325. Hello.

1326. Syd.

1327. Hey, Syd.

1328. You there? It's John.

1329. Wait, hold... Shit.

1330. Hold on.

1331. Hello? How's that?

1332. We're in Rock Island, Illinois.

1333. We should be there tomorrow morning, afternoon sometime.

1334. How's everything back there?

1335. Yeah?

1336. There's no problems, nothing? The guy and...

1337. Everything is fine.

1338. How's Clementine?

1339. She's good.

1340. Clem!

1341. She's good. She sends her love.

1342. Yeah. Yeah, I will.

1343. I really love her, Syd.

1344. I mean, I know that whole thing and everything, but I really do.

1345. I know.

1346. I'll be here for a while.

1347. All right, look,

1348. this phone's gonna run out of change any second,

1349. so I'm just gonna say so long now,

1350. and I'll call you when we get there, you know?

1351. And thanks for everything, Syd.

1352. Yeah, John...

1353. There's something I need to tell you.

1354. It's something you need to know. It's important.

1355. I need to tell you...

1356. I love you, John. I love you like you were my own son.

1357. Thank you, Syd.

1358. I love you, too.

1359. Call me when you get there.

1360. Okay, I'll speak to you then.

1361. Jump on this horse.

1362. This horse is going wide.

1363. Everybody ready? Everybody ready? Everybody ready?

1364. Got your money down?

1365. That's what I'm talking about.

1366. Stay on this horse. Stay on this horse. I'm going to justice.

1367. Are you sleeping?

1368. You gotta keep me up.

1369. One more time. You got your money down.

1370. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it.

1371. Two thousand on the hard eight.

1372. - Me, too! - All right, let's go for it!

1373. Now we get it.

1374. It's gonna smoke now!

1375. Got them in my hand, got them in my hand.

1376. Be there! Eighter!

1377. No.

1378. It's coming hard eight, just like mine.

1379. - Hard eight! - Yeah!

1380. Yes! Yes! That's what I'm talking about.

1381. Yeah.

1382. Pull that shit off, baby.

1383. Let me see that pussy.

1384. Let me see it.

1385. Yeah, let me see that thing.

1386. Yeah.

1387. Get out.
