28. He's right there by his room, eating in the grass.

35. So, the continuity works on our film, is,

36. we don't care about it.

37. I think it has nothing to do with whether people like

38. the story, or has to do with anything.

39. On a big set they nitpick that shit to death.

40. - Holy cow, there's a cow out there.

42. - All that means in anything, in any kind of art

43. form is the vibe.

44. The vibe is important, and if you're digging the vibe

45. of the whole thing.

46. Which, I mean, the idea.

47. Do you dig the idea of the cow coming to the room

48. and he's going to enter your life and all that shit.

49. Do you dig the story, now that's all that matters.

50. The other little shit, it's absolutely worthless.

51. Miles is right, it's become like a style in a way.

53. it's always got a little something like that in there.

54. You know, you don't see that in movies.

61. - My favorite movies are Giuseppe's.

62. Well, I like them all, of course.

63. I like different parts of all of them,

64. they're some incredible stunts in there.

65. I mean, I'm amazed by what he can do

66. with his stunt department, when he's got,

67. you know, $3.50 for props.

68. And, the process is the same as you know.

69. You know, it's cut and action and, got to learn the line,

70. and boom, and once they forget about everyone else

71. around them, in our case, in these movies,

72. it's three people, they burn.

73. At first, when we would first meet these people,

74. you know, it was just the money hustle.

75. But then, they got to know Giuseppe, and, you know,

76. some of the other crew members, myself, and,

77. they became friends and they got better at the acting.

78. Giuseppe would train them, you know.

79. By about the third movie, these guys were doing

80. pretty damn good.

81. - And most of them are homeless.

82. The ones that we liked the best, are homeless.

83. But there's a couple of them that are a step

84. above homeless, that have like, you know,

85. they're in cars.

86. Because some of the actors actually live in

87. the trailer park where Giuseppe lives, so, you know,

88. they're functioning, they get a check every month.

89. None of them work, but they get some

90. kind of nut check or something.

91. Giuseppe favorite, which was Gail Wells, she turned into

92. a fantastic actress, she embraced the whole process,

93. she was at the end of her life, and it gave her

94. something to do.

95. - I don't have a year, I've got cystic fibrosis.

96. I'll be gone before a year's up.

97. - Yeah, but that's not life threatening.

98. - Just shut your goddam mouth.

99. It smells you just ate a cum filled

100. burrito for Christ's sake.

101. - Now, we were the only ones that would even,

102. you know, mess around with her.

103. 'Cuz she had cancer, and she started looking real bad,

104. but we still put her in the movies,

105. and she wanted to do it.

107. I didn't welcome.

108. Here we go, Ramona Park.

109. Look at this place, huh?

110. Now here's Giuseppe's trailer,

111. and right next to him is my trailer.

112. I'min 18, he'sin 17, and I'm in 18, the white one.

113. There's Giuseppe by the way.

114. This trailer was pristine, vintage trailer

115. when we bought this trailer.

116. They completely turned it into a set.

117. - My great actress, Gail, gave me this,

118. when I think we (mumbling) in her garden.

119. She stuck it on there, and she's passed away now.

120. That refers to fucking, that sticker.

121. So this is the trailer.

122. Ed calls it like the un—

123. Like you're in the middle ground somewhere, like in this

124. lost world of green, so I just went crazy.

125. And it was also something to do, paint,

126. a cathartic thing, and I started painting,

127. doing murals on the walls.

128. And I knew that I wanted to get into a new thing.

129. I knew that I needed a main set.

130. The count right now, the ones that I really, truly,

131. feel great about, the count is nine.

132. So, I'm making my tenth film

133. you're gonna be documenting number 10,

134. will be going down.

135. Although I've made over 20, close to 30.

136. Jd That is when in knew that we would be

137. - I've been doing this seven years, it was seven years,

138. of never stopping.

139. I've continued on this path of, just making films

140. in three days, but now it's two days.

141. I've cut it down, I've kind of

142. wanted to raise it up a little bit and

143. make a film in two days, which I know I can do.

144. Fassbinder, in A Year With 13 Moons,

145. he worked everything, he shot it, edited it,

146. that's what I liked about it.

147. I like when one man does the whole deal.

148. Something exciting about that to me.

149. There's a scene of that film, where he runs the main

150. character's voiceover, over a scene of a slaughter house.

151. That's how the story for this film started coming

152. about, that we're going to shoot Garbonzo Gas,

153. in a very weird way.

154. I just looked at the cows and I said, I just picked a

155. random cow, and I send him on an adventure.

156. What would that be?

157. I started writing a story about a cow, that the slaughter

158. house sends on an all expense paid vacation,

159. to a motel.

160. And this is the script, there it is.

161. I had no really title for it, you know,

162. was I going to go the simple route,

163. call it The Cow In The Motel?

164. Was I going to do something like that?

165. I didn't like that.

166. I wanted to have an abstract thing.

167. So, I ate a can of garbonzo beans, farted,

168. and named it Garbonzo Gas.

169. I didn't question that, or second guess that,

170. and that is the name of it, Garbonzo Gas.

171. That's like, a boxer, they tell a good boxer to

172. let his hands go.

173. I feel the same way about writing.

174. That you can write, and you can do it,

175. and you feel good about what you're doing,

176. your style and you got it down, just let your hands go,

177. like a boxer.

178. There's about 50 pages or something of notes

179. here, probably,

180. But I know what that equals out to, that gets me in the

181. ball park of the whole film.

182. - I do it all.

183. I'm the driver, I'm the grip, I'm the craft service,

184. I'm the chef, it all fits in,

185. because that's basically how we've lived for years.

186. Me and him.

187. I'm the cook, I shop, you know, I drive.

188. He saw three people dead on Pacific Coast Highway,

189. he'll never drive.

190. We're going to go into Rite Aid and get

191. our little DVD case.

192. There's a booze run, there's two or three of those

193. for the actors, that's their craft service,

194. that's all they want: booze.

195. I got to pick the actors up, take them home.

196. They're all too incapacitated to drive.

197. I'm the sober driver.

198. And then there's camera reloads.

199. They're like, 25 bucks each, so there's one, two,

200. three, four, 100 bucks for the camera reload.

201. Take all those.

202. Oh boy, this is what puts these guys at ease,

203. and they get back into their own element.

204. They look so natural, you know,

205. because this is what they do every day, so for them,

206. not to do that,

207. They would look like different people, you know,

208. without their juice.

209. This one's for Ron, he likes only the green ones.

210. And then we got to have Walt,

211. he likes the malt liquor.

212. The Magnums, he likes them.

213. Okay, and that'll do it for the scenes today.

214. Then we'll reload them tomorrow, you can't let

215. them get it all at once.

216. Or, you know, the sheep turn into a—

217. They pass out and shit.

218. You can't have that.

220. - It was just always me and Ed.

221. I've been around him for 26 years, every day.

222. Well, we lived in supermarket parking lots in Malibu.

223. We just tell people we lived in Malibu.

224. You know, but we lived in a van in the shopping center.

225. Because you sleep there all night, it was a

226. 24 hour one all the time, so we'd sleep there.

227. And then in the day, we'd just hang out at the beach.

228. - Well, it's always father son, but that kind of fades into

229. the background, and it's more like, bandmates,

230. is how I would describe it.

231. I've always treated him like the other guys

232. in the band, you know,

233. like when I was with the Beegees or Andy Gibb.

234. And that's like a musician relationship,

235. which is, you know, friends.

236. - I knew what the street was about, and I knew what—

237. The people who were just barely making it were about,

238. and what they were feeling, because I felt those

239. same things and—

240. But I knew that with all the depression there is

241. involved with it, and things like that,

242. there is a comedy in there.

243. There is humorous things happening, even in the

244. worst predicaments, and that's something I kept with me.

245. Because me and Ed would always find a way to laugh

246. about something, even when it got really bad, you know,

247. you didn't know what the fuck was going to happen.

248. It was really bad.

249. I just miss playing music period, but I'm not going

250. to start again, playing in toilet bowls for $25 a night,

251. so, I'm in a trailer, but that's as low as it's

252. going to go for me.

253. I got a nice ride, and we can pay the rent,

254. and I'm by the beach.

255. And that's all I ever wanted out of the deal,

256. to tell you the truth.

257. So, I got that.

258. - And it gave me that, to enjoy life with what

259. I had, and to understand it from the way I had.

260. And be more creative, in what was happening here,

261. and dream more.

263. - Are we going to be putting any other

264. actors in this car today?

265. - I don't think so, because I think after this,

266. we're going to go to Vietnam Ron's.

267. The party store and then Vietnam Ron's, and I don't think

268. anybody else is going to be in there today.

274. These are very fragile items in the trailer homes.

277. Before Giuseppe's career got rolling, we just had

278. this one trailer, and he was getting older,

279. and we needed a place, you know,

280. we were getting in each other's fucking hair in there.

281. So, we bought this shed at—

282. I guess it was either Walmart, or one of those places.

283. 1000 bucks, I made a whole in the floor, inside when that

284. comes up, and you can plug in a bunch of shit.

286. - This was where he lived.

287. Now, it looks like shit.

288. We got a nice oriental rug down on the floor here,

289. he had electric.

290. You know, he had it set up like a little home.

291. - And this was all films, you know?

292. And I'd just sit here with a little TV plugged in,

293. and just go crazy.

294. - Nice rug, and chair and a bed.

295. And that's how he made it, for a long time,

296. for a year before we bought that next trailer.

297. You don't have a lot of room in trailers.

298. Let me show you what we use, this is our

299. basic office right here.

300. Oh my god, there is all is, for the last seven years.

301. - See I've never seen it pictured or nothin, so it blows my mind when

302. somebody actually saves some kind of shit.

306. We get fan mail on this daily.

307. He won't fuck around with them, but I answer them,

308. I send them a picture.

309. This was the biggest little cult movie ever.

310. - We didn't know what to do.

311. We were in a van, and eventually, and my dad did this

312. hair infomercial in the paper.

313. He went for a hair infomercial, they needed a guy.

314. I think they gave him 50 bucks, but then, like,

315. the director said, we need a kid to run up real

316. quick in the scene, and say, "Are the hotdogs ready?"

317. And he said, "Well, my kids's in the van."

318. - The rabbi says he needs your signature here.

319. - What is that, a disease?

320. - No, it's a pimple.

321. - And things developed from there, and next thing I know,

322. I was reading for Diane Keaton and,

323. in Independence Day, It just started all building,

324. and we got out of the van.

325. After all the years of just being on set, and acting

326. and shit, I just felt like I wanted to explode, man,

327. I didn't know what to do.

328. And it caused some depression to happen.

329. And some bad depression, I could call it.

330. - Here's how, when he lived in the shed, hot it looked.

331. There he is contemplating.

332. - I had all my films, do you see all my films,

333. and you can see the titles, too, which is good.

334. My Life To Live, Godard, I remember them all.

335. Love Meetings, Pasalini where he interviews people on a beach.

336. Mama Roma, Pasalini, Oedipus Rex, Pasalini.

337. We got Strosik, we got Night Of The Iguana, Vera Diana.

338. I related big to that, because of the homeless people.

339. You know, when I saw that one, that scene,

340. it's a film, it's a Bufiuel film, and he made a film

341. about a nun, who takes homeless people into a house.

342. When they leave town, the bums go crazy,

343. and they wreck everything, spilled wine, getting drunk.

344. When I saw that scene, I related big time to it.

345. And I kind of wanted to make a whole film like that,

346. like that scene that I saw in there, I wanted to make

347. a whole movie with shit like that.

348. So that was a big, big one.

349. - You see why I save the pictures?

350. He'd throw every fucking picture away.

351. Once you look at it, he feels you've used the

352. picture and get rid of it.

353. But I look at them again, so—

354. - Yeah, it's not been a good thing for me,

355. throwing stuff away, because I've thrown my own

356. films away, you know.

357. - This the one we sold about 50 of, before he

358. he shit canned it.

359. Didn't want it out anymore, so I got it out

360. of the garbage though.

361. And this one, this is called Period Piece,

362. this is when we bought the $100 baby suckling pig

363. at a butcher.

364. I had to fucking go way down to LA, to find a butcher

365. who would gut a pig and shit.

382. The first cut of it, I mean, it was just—

383. I remember showing it to Ed, and Ed was like,

384. real depressed, and like, he didn't know what

385. the fuck I was trying to put together.

386. But I was obsessed, because I knew it was going

387. to lead to something, I knew if I could just get

388. in a flow, and get in a rhythm,

389. that it could lead to something.

390. I decided to start making films in a new way.

391. Where the people start talking in rhythms, and poems.

392. - I'm sick of this phoney baloney.

393. - That fucker gets hard and horny.

395. - People would even call it pornographic and shit,

396. but I don't see it like that at all.

397. I just see it as having fun with words,

432. And we got to re-buy all new props.

433. He will not use a prop two times in a movie.

434. We've gone around and around about this.

435. I said, man, just put them in the shed, we'd have the

436. whole fucking prop department by now.

437. - I would see them every day, they were just hanging

438. in the shed, and it wouldn't mean the same thing to me.

439. To get rid of them is a cleansing thing, you know—

441. Cleansing of our fucking wallet.

442. - I don't find money exciting or creative.

443. It excites me not to have it, and to have to

444. work with my mind, to create something from nothing.

445. And even what they call independent film, I feel like those

446. guys got too much money.

447. I think to myself, "Boy, somebody gave that guy, like,

448. "a million dollars, or half a million dollars,

449. "and that's an independent film?"

450. I make those for 1000 bucks, you know?

451. - You love a dummy, I know you love a dummy.

453. a door or something, you know?

454. Yeah, wow it's pretty good, only three bucks.

455. - Wow, three bucks, man.

461. someone gets shot, there's a lot of fake blood.

539. I didn't want to make films with younger people,

540. they don't interest me.

542. They haven't learned enough, they haven't been

543. through enough, I needed somebody like that,

544. who had lived a lot.

566. and took me to meet some of his friends in town,

567. who later became character actors in the thing.

568. - You'll see Vietnam Ron today, he lives in what they

569. call, Sober Living Compound.

570. It's a big house, and he's like, in an old van

571. that's rusted out in the yard.

572. But it's enclosed by a fence, so no one can see

573. the neighbor, so he just crashes in there.

574. - Yeah, I was in Vietnam for 32 months all together.

575. Not at all at one time, but, different times.

577. One way or another, whether you actually pulled the

578. trigger, or you helped load the bombs on the plane,

579. or whatever, you know, we were killing people.

580. I came back and I got run over,

581. coming out of a bar one night and I

582. tripped and some lady ran over me,

583. and drug me 300 feet.

584. And bled to death.

585. I was dead for two and a half minutes,

586. had seven broken ribs, broken collar bone,

587. two separated shoulders.

588. All kinds of things.

589. It had knocked all of my teeth out.

590. Knocked my front teeth out, and put a scar on my—

591. I have a scar that runs from here down to my chin.

592. Where you can grab my beard like this, and see my jaw bone.

593. And, I had 250 stitches in my face and head.

594. And, after that, you know, I was pretty much—

595. I said, to hell with all this stuff, work and everything.

596. I got to do something else, because you only live once.

597. - I lived in all different states, mostly I

598. came from Wisconsin.

599. I moved back here.

600. I was living on the streets, got parents that's no good,

601. and after that, it was hard to find a job,

602. because I moved city to city.

603. Had a few fights, got stabbed five times,

604. shot twice, got escorted out of town a few times,

605. in and out of jail too many times.

606. They gave me all of three years.

607. So I did my time, I'm clean, and ever since then

608. I'm being good, I got to.

613. when you showed up.

617. about until when I see it.

618. And when I see the movie, I go,

619. "Oh, my god man, what I get into?"

620. - Oh, he's great to work with, but he's kind of

621. sick and warped sometimes, you know.

622. He's got a sick sense of humor.

623. - It's a two day shoot, the whole movie

624. will be shot in two days.

625. And probably edited that night.

626. It's never been done before, for $1,000,

627. that's barely anything.

628. And we're going to shoot a film in two days.

629. Starting tomorrow, the shoot starts,

630. George will be off.

631. - I seen his movies, he's pretty sick,

632. so I'm going to have some fun in doing it.

633. It's fun, I like doing it.

634. I don't want to do it for profession.

635. I like to see myself on the screen and say,

636. "Oh wow, I did that?"

637. - I tell everybody that a film a great film,

638. can be made in two days.

639. And we're going to make our greatest fucking movie,
