Fresh (2022)

1. What?

2. (OVER PHONE) Girl, fuck that. Just leave.

3. I know. Like...

4. (SCOFFS) I obviously don't mind paying,

5. but what a weird way to start off a date.

6. That's what I'm sayin'.

7. Is this what you tell your kids?

8. "Oh, it was so romantic before our first date, y'all.

9. "He texted me, 'FYI, this place is cash only.'"

10. - (CHUCKLES) - No.

11. I'm already here.

12. Girl...

13. I'm really fuckin' hungry.

14. Mmm.

15. I don't know. Hopefully, it'll make for a good story.

16. (LAUGHS) Call me after.

17. - Love you. - Okay, I love you more.

18. - (IN HIGH-PITCHED VOICE) Bye. - Bye.

19. (IN HIGH-PITCHED VOICE) Bye-bye.

20. (INHALES DEEPLY) Okay, let's do this.

21. (MUFFLED) So I love hot sauce.

22. I literally just put it on every single thing

23. I can find around the house sometimes.

24. From pizza to chicken wings. (CHUCKLES)

25. Even though it gives me terrible acid reflux.

26. - Mmm. - It makes its way up to my throat

27. and I literally feel like I'm gonna vomit.

28. - So... - Oh, yeah. That, um, sucks.

29. - Mmm. - But I love it, so...

30. - (CHUCKLES) Yeah. - Yeah.

31. Like, I love wasabi, but, um,

32. Mexican spices would be too much for me.

33. - Mmm. Yeah. I get that. - Yeah.

34. Yeah.

35. Mmm.

36. (CHUCKLES) What?

37. I had this crazy thought. I...

38. I just feel like...

39. the women in our parents' generation,

40. they just cared more about how they dressed

41. and just, kind of, how they looked.

42. They were more into femininity.

43. - You know what I mean? - Mmm.

44. Like, nowadays, I feel like girls, they just wear

45. oversized everything, like it's a blanket.

46. Do you know what I mean? You know what I'm saying, right?

47. - Um... - It's like...

48. 'Cause I think you would just look great in a dress.

49. Not that you don't look good in a sweater,

50. - but I mean, if you were... You guys okay?

51. Uh, yeah. Um, pretty much done, actually. Thank you.

52. Cool. Yeah, we'll just get this wrapped up then.

53. - Thank you. - You're welcome.

54. Oh, did you bring cash?

55. Yeah. You reminded me, so...

56. My brother is coming into town.

57. If it's cool, I'm just gonna snag these leftovers

58. and, uh, I guess I'll just let you leave...

59. Cool. No. Yeah.

60. a couple bucks less on the tip.

61. If that makes sense.

62. Your scarf is dipping into the noodles.

63. Oh, fuck!

64. Shit!

65. I love this scarf. Um...

66. Excuse me? Excuse me.

67. Quick, come.

68. Hi, do you have sparkling water?

69. - Sparkling. - Mmm-hmm. Yeah.

70. - Bubble. You know bubbles? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.

71. And a lemon, please?

72. I don't know if she understood what I said.

73. I don't think she speaks English.

74. That was, uh, that was fun.

75. You're really cute.

76. - Thank you. - Yeah.

77. We should do this again sometime.

78. Yeah, look, Chad, um...

79. - Yeah. - (NOA HESITATES)

80. Oh. (CHUCKLES) I... I don't

81. think we're really a match. You know?

82. Wow.

83. I was literally just being polite.

84. You're not even my type, to be honest, so...

85. (SCOFFS) Okay.

86. Oh, that's funny? "Ha-ha, it's hilarious"? Yeah.

87. Okay. Good luck finding a guy, you stuck-up bitch.

88. Um...

89. What the fuck.

90. Oh, fuck.

91. Oh. Stupid idiot.

92. Can you please just text him and write,

93. "Fuck you and your ugly-ass scarf, bitch."

94. Oh, see, I wish I thought of that in the moment.

95. Instead I just stood there like an idiot.

96. - Let's switch. - Yeah.

97. I don't know how you do it, Mollie.

98. Do what?

99. Dating people.

100. And I always end up alone.

101. Which, by the way, I'm very okay with.

102. No, no. What?

103. You do not need a man, okay? Or anybody, for that matter.

104. It's just the way we've been raised since fuckin' Disney movies.

105. - Yeah. Fuck Ariel. (CHUCKLES) - Fuck her.

106. Stupid bitch left the whole sea for a man.

107. - (NOA LAUGHS) - Come on, now.

108. Like, fuck... Fuck Beauty.

109. Yeah, fuck the Beast. I am the beast.

110. - You are the beast! Get it! - (LAUGHS)

111. Time, everyone!

112. Whoo! Great job today, huh?

113. I mean that.

114. - (GROWLS) - Now give yourselves a round of applause.

115. - Whoo! - (ALL CLAPPING)

116. Great job!

117. - Bam! (CHUCKLES) - Ah! (LAUGHS)

118. - You are powerful! - You are powerful!

119. - Look at how strong you are. - Look at this.

120. Oh, fuck.

121. (ECHOING) Have you ever had these?

122. Grapes?

123. No. Cotton Candy grapes.

124. They taste just like them. I'm not kiddin'.

125. - Really? - Yeah.

126. I told my sister and niece.

127. They were like, "No way, fuck you."

128. So now I'm getting them on my way there.

129. Your niece said, "Fuck you"?

130. - Yeah. Four-year-olds are crazy. - (NOA CHUCKLES)

131. All right.

132. I can tell you don't believe me,

133. so you're gonna have to try one.

134. I don't want you leaving here thinking I'm a weirdo.

135. Okay.

136. - Right? - Holy shit. Mmm.

137. - Wow. - Science.

138. Yeah. Go science. (CHUCKLES)

139. Do you live around here?

140. - (INHALES SHARPLY) - 'Cause I live on aisle six.

141. I just come to the fruit section

142. to talk to random, very good-looking people

143. that stand near it.

144. That was terrible.

145. That was kinda terrible.

146. - I'm so sorry. - It's fine.

147. Have a good night.

148. (CHUCKLES) Okay. You, too.

149. You know what? Fuck it.

150. I'm already ruining this, so I'm just gonna keep goin'.

151. Do you think I could have your number?

152. - Oh. - It's really just so I have a story

153. for my sister and my niece when I see them.

154. Because I think we're gonna talk about the grapes.

155. Oh, of course. Yeah.

156. Then I can tell them that I met someone else

157. who feels the same way.

158. Sure. Makes sense, yeah.

159. Okay.

160. We can meet here next week to talk about the broccoli if you want.

161. (CHUCKLES) Sounds good.

162. Oh.

163. - Mist. - Rain forest.

164. Always good to have a little mist, Noa.

165. - Yes, mystery. - Yeah.

166. I'm Steve.

167. - It's nice to meet you. - You, too.

168. I'm not gonna text you, but I'll really want to.

169. Good night.

170. Good night.

171. What? Yeah.

172. Your number? Yeah.

173. In a grocery store? Yeah.

174. The other night? Yes.

175. And you're just now telling me today?

176. - (NOA LAUGHS) - Wow.

177. When you think you had a friend.

178. No, I just think it was weird, you know? He was...

179. He was cute and funny and...

180. Mmm. Okay.

181. I didn't think people met people in real life anymore, you know?

182. He's probably married. (LAUGHS)

183. Thank you for that. Yes, he's probably married.

184. Probably.

185. Like, I'm already thinking about the fact

186. - he hasn't texted. - Mmm.

187. That's one of the things I love about dating women.

188. Less games, more emotional dependence, you know?

189. So don't play the games,

190. just be you straight out the gate. Fuck it.

191. Maybe.

192. Hey, do you want to come over later?

193. - I could use some emotional dependence. - Aww.

194. Well, my emotional dependence ain't cheap, boo.

195. - Let me tell you. - (LAUGHS)

196. - Hi. Hey!

197. How you doin'?

198. - Good, thanks. How are you? - Good. Good.

199. This place is really nice.

200. - Yeah. - The bears are, you know...

201. Yeah. It's like the perfect amount of, you know, grimy, but hip.

202. Exactly.

203. Ayyo.

204. - You guys know what you want? Hi. Um...

205. Can I get a Manhattan with, like, as many cherries as you can spare, please?

206. - Cherries. I like that. - I love cherries.

207. Yeah. I'll do one more of these, thank you.

208. Copy.

209. Here you go. Here.

210. - Thank you. - You're welcome.

211. Ay-yo.

212. - Hi. - Hey.

213. - I'm Steve. - Oh.

214. Noa.

215. Um...

216. All right, so, uh... Here come the dumb questions.

217. Where are you from?

218. Um, (CHUCKLES) I'm from the East Coast originally,

219. - yeah. - Nice.

220. What about you?

221. - I'm from Texas. Yeah. - Oh. Cool.

222. What brought you out here?

223. My second residency.

224. - Oh! Residency. - Yeah.

225. Are you a doc...

226. - A doctor? - I'm a doctor. Yeah.

227. Oh! Wow!

228. - Yeah. Yeah. Um... - That's impressive.

229. I just... I work in reconstructive surgery.

230. You mean, um, plastic surgery.

231. - Yup. That's the one. - Right.

232. - There's only one. - Okay.

233. But it's not all nose jobs.

234. No, of course. You got, you know...

235. - Boob jobs. - Boob jobs.

236. - You got your butt lifts. - Implants.

237. - Face-lifts - Face-lifts.

238. But you know, once in a while

239. I get to help somebody, which is nice though.

240. There was this kid the other day who came in,

241. who had an accident and he was badly burned.

242. So there's that, too.

243. I was just kidding. Sorry.

244. There you go. - Thank you.

245. - That is amazing. - (CHUCKLES) Don't worry.

246. That work for you?

247. - Wow. Yes. - That do the trick?

248. - 'Cause that's all we got. - I'm sorry. That's...

249. Perfect.

250. I only meant, like, a couple. Thank you.

251. - (GLASSES CLINK) - Cheers.

252. So, what about your family?

253. Uh... Well, I, um, I don't have any siblings

254. and my dad died a while back, so...

255. I'm not sure where my mom is anymore because we don't talk.

256. - Yeah. - I'm sorry.

257. It's fine. Um...

258. - What about your family? - Oh...

259. My dad is in Texas and my mom passed away, actually.

260. - Sorry. - So... But it's...

261. - I'm sorry. - It's okay. It's okay.

262. Well, we have something in common, I guess.

263. - Yeah, dead parents. - Yeah.

264. - Perfect. - Great.

265. - Let's cheers to that. - (LAUGHS)

266. coordinated like that.

267. - So you don't have Instagram. Nope.

268. Wow. What about, um, Twitter?

269. - Definitely not. - No?

270. Does anyone say anything smart on Twitter ever?

271. That's true. (LAUGHS)

272. No way. Come on. It's the worst.

273. I mean, how am I supposed to stalk you now?

274. (EXHALES) You're just gonna have to do it in person.

275. You know. Show up at my house, the old-fashioned way.

276. Send me a letter!

277. - That would be nice. - That would be nice.

278. "Dearest..."

279. (LAUGHS) "Yours truly." Okay, I'll do that.

280. I'd love that. That'd touch my heart.

281. That sounds nice. (LAUGHS)

282. What?

283. No, you just have a nice smile.

284. - Okay. - You do.

285. All right, okay. Let's play a game.

286. Um... Tell me something you don't want me to know.

287. - Hmm... Fun game. Okay. - Yeah.

288. Ooh. It's risky.

289. Mmm...

290. Yes. Um...

291. I...

292. hate this.

293. I mean, um...

294. (LAUGHING) Okay. I'm sorry.

295. Not you, 'cause you seem cool, but... No, I...

296. I hate, like, dating.

297. Mmm.

298. You know? Everything about it.

299. The, like...

300. The awkward preamble.

301. The, like, questions and stuff. The, like...

302. You know, texting.

303. - The perfect projection. - Yeah.

304. Everything about it. Honestly.

305. I don't know, I just think that, um...

306. people who, like, believe in true love are fucking idiots.

307. - So dumb. - (LAUGHS)

308. - They are. They're so dumb.

309. Like, we put all our hopes of, like, finding happiness through someone else.

310. And I just think that, like,

311. I don't know, maybe it's not meant for me,

312. 'cause I've, like, been alone so long,

313. I'm actually pretty good at it.

314. Fuck it.

315. What?

316. No, it's just... Maybe it's a little too much.

317. A little too fast.

318. Oh, wow.

319. I don't think I've ever heard a guy say that before.

320. Um, can I, uh...

321. Can I get you something to, like, drink?

322. Or eat?

323. No, just...

324. Just you.

325. Mmm. (CHUCKLES)

326. - Morning. - Good morning.

327. - Hello. - (NOA CHUCKLES)

328. - (STEVE SIGHS) - Coffee?

329. Yeah, yeah, please.

330. Just to, like, hide that morning breath.

331. - Oh, God. Is it that bad? - (LAUGHS)

332. Oh, no.

333. I'm not letting go of your hand.

334. Get off. Get off. (LAUGHS)

335. Oh, we had sex.

336. Get that D!

337. Somewhere between the second and the third drink I was like,

338. "Fuck it."

339. And it was actually very freeing.

340. (SIGHS) My "Fuck it" advice always works. Damn.

341. Like, I wasn't even worrying about how I looked

342. or like, if I was taking too long.

343. Okay!

344. What's his Instagram? I wanna stalk a little bit.

345. Oh, he doesn't have one.

346. - Say what? - Yeah.

347. Whatcha mean?

348. Oh, no, see, that's, that's shady.

349. I'm sorry. Red flag.

350. Okay. Whatever. Stop raining on my sex parade.

351. - (MOLLIE SCOFFS) - Please?

352. Oh, by the way, um, do you remember Paul?

353. - Paul? - He was our bartender.

354. Oh, yeah. Aw, Paul!

355. You know, I don't remember why we stopped hooking up.

356. He was a good guy.

357. And a good kisser, too.

358. Probably because you can't be tamed.

359. - (CHUCKLES) - You need to roam free.

360. That is true.

361. All right, well, I gotta get back to work. I love you.

362. - Okay, love you more. Bye! - Bye!

363. You have to try these short ribs, they're insane.

364. Yeah, they look really good, but I, um...

365. I just don't eat animals.

366. Oh!

367. But... But keep eating. Don't... Don't stop.

368. In fact, I actually want you to finish that plate.

369. I dare you to finish that plate.

370. - No! - (LAUGHS) No, no... Why?

371. - This is my favorite... - But it does...

372. fucking short ribs.

373. - Hey, listen, you have to eat the... - I can't. You've ruined it for me now.

374. Yeah.

375. I'm gonna wash my hands, I think. (CHUCKLES)

376. So have you, uh, have you told anyone about me?

377. (CHUCKLES) Maybe.

378. (CHUCKLES) My best friend, Mollie.

379. (CHUCKLES) What did you tell your best friend, Mollie?

380. Um, that I met a cool guy.

381. And I might kind of like him.

382. - Just, like, a little bit. - Uh-huh.

383. - Tell me more about Mollie. - Um...

384. Well, we met, like, I think it was like seven years ago,

385. um, when I first moved here. We worked together for a bit.

386. Think you'd really get along.

387. Hmm.

388. I don't know about you, but I am stuffed.

389. I think we should dance.

390. (CHUCKLES) What?

391. - (NOA CHUCKLES) - Let's go. Come on.

392. Yes. Yes, yes, let's go, let's go.

393. - I wanna see those moves. - Okay.

394. I wanna see those moves. Get in the center here.

395. - Let me turn this up. - (MUSIC VOLUME INCREASES)

396. Here we go.

397. Okay.

398. Just a little sway.

399. (CHUCKLES) It's just a little two-step for now.

400. - It's all in the little moves. - It's all in the face.

401. It's in the shoulders.

402. I mean, I can hop.

403. Oh, the hip thrust! Oh, my God.

404. - Nah, you don't have... - (LAUGHS)

405. This. That.

406. - Yeah. To me. - Oh, no, no. Okay.

407. Okay, okay, okay, okay.

408. Looks like we're salsa-ing.

409. It's a salsa.

410. - You are... moves. - Oh, my God.

411. - (NOA GROANS) - I have to. I have to.

412. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. It was a really good picture.

413. - You need to delete that. - I will never delete that.

414. We should go away somewhere.

415. Do you want to?

416. Uh, yeah.

417. - Yeah? - Yeah, um...

418. Fuck it. Why not?

419. I mean, where?

420. Wherever.

421. Somewhere... Somewhere nice.

422. Somewhere... fun.

423. Maybe it'll be a surprise.

424. Fuck it.

425. Yeah.

426. Yeah.

427. Um, I'm going away with Steve for the weekend.

428. What? Where?

429. - It's a surprise. - Hold on, Noa.

430. Uh-uh. A surprise? I don't like that.

431. I'm just gonna go for it. You said, "Fuck it," remember?

432. Girl, you all dickmatized. I haven't even seen this dude.

433. Oh, shit, I totally forgot. Hold on.

434. I'm sending you a picture of him.

435. I mean, he looks cute,

436. but I can barely even tell, you creep.

437. Um, he is ridiculously cute.

438. I'll, um, I'll text you once we get there and let you know everything, okay?

439. Okay, fine.

440. Um, I'm excited for you.

441. It's a straight girl's fantasy come true, right?

442. Right? - (CHUCKLES)

443. I love you. - I love you more.

444. - Bye. - Bye.

445. Hey. - Hi.

446. Sorry. My day ran long.

447. Uh, listen, we're gonna have to leave in the morning.

448. I just checked the traffic and it's a nightmare.

449. So I figured maybe we go to my place

450. and then, you know, we leave first thing tomorrow.

451. - Is that cool? - Yeah. Okay.

452. - Look at you. - (CHUCKLES)

453. All right.

454. I'm excited.

455. How you doing? - (INHALES SHARPLY)

456. - You all right? Yeah. Good.

457. Fuck. I'm just gonna tell you.

458. We're going to Cottage Grove. That's the surprise.

459. That's it.

460. - Really? - (CHUCKLES) Yeah.

461. - That's the surprise? - Yeah.

462. What? I've always wanted to go.

463. You're not just saying that?

464. I'm not just saying that. No, I really have.

465. I mean, I hate surprises, so I'm kinda glad you told me.

466. Yeah, it's gonna be good.

467. Ugh. My cell isn't working.

468. Yeah, the service is, um,

469. shitty, but it's gonna get better at my place.

470. Cool.

471. Fresh air, right?

472. Yeah.

473. It's amazing.

474. Who knew?

475. Oh.

476. - Kinda disappointing. - (STEVE LAUGHS)

477. - (SNIFFS) Sizing me up?

478. Oh. Yeah.

479. Smells good.

480. My sister got me that.

481. Apparently she thinks I like sandalwood.

482. - (CHUCKLES) - Okay.

483. Do you have, um...

484. Do you have Wi-Fi?

485. Still no service.

486. Fuck, must've gone out again.

487. By the way,

488. um, I'm making my own version

489. of an old-fashioned with a twist.

490. And, um, it's gonna have some cherries in it.

491. (CLICKS TONGUE) Very thoughtful.

492. Cheers.

493. Cheers.

494. Mmm. - Mmm?

495. That's really good.

496. - Yeah? - Mmm.

497. Notice any interesting flavors in there?

498. Um...

499. - Peach? - No.

500. Close, very close.

501. Um...

502. - Apricot? - Oh.

503. - No. - No?

504. - What? Fuck. - So close. (CHUCKLES)

505. - (CHUCKLES) - So close. Come on.

506. Hmm.

507. - Nectarine? - Yes!

508. - Really? - Yeah, you got it.

509. Nectarine.

510. Um...

511. Your, uh, your house is intimidating.

512. You're all, like, you know,

513. fancy cocktails, and I'm like pancakes out of a bag. (CHUCKLES)

514. Yeah, but that's what I like about you.

515. No pretending.

516. Hmm.

517. By the way, that, um... The house in Cottage Grove,

518. it has a hot tub.

519. I don't know what you packed in that big bag of yours,

520. (ECHOING) but adjustable jets,

521. multiple lights, the whole ordeal.

522. It's gonna be like New Year's Eve in there.

523. What? Sorry.

524. You're gonna need a bathing suit. (CHUCKLES)

525. Noa. Noa, look at me.

526. Why are you sitting so far away?

527. Come here.

528. Hey.

529. Hi.

530. How did you sleep?

531. (INHALES DEEPLY) Yeah, good. Um...

532. What...

533. What happened?

534. I drugged you.

535. What, um...

536. What's going on, Steve?

537. I'm gonna tell you, but you're gonna freak out.

538. No, no. No, no, no, no.

539. Hmm. Hmm...

540. Mmm-mmm.

541. (WHISPERING) Steve, can you take these off, please?

542. Can't do that.

543. Can you take these off?

544. - Can't do that. - Steve.

545. Take this off.

546. I can't do that.

547. No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. (SNIFFLES)

548. No, no, no, no, no. No. No.

549. - No. No. This isn't happening. - Yeah, it's happening.

550. This isn't happening. This isn't happening.

551. Yes, it is.

552. Please, please, please, please. This is a joke.

553. Isn't it, Steve?

554. (SIGHS) Look, why don't you just try to...

555. - Noa. - Don't! Don't! Don't!

556. - I'm gonna stay right here. Don't come near me.

557. Do not come near me. - I'm staying right here.

558. Steve! (HYPERVENTILATES)

559. - Noa. - (PANTS, WHIMPERS)

560. (CRYING) Come on, Noa, think. What...

561. Oh, my God. Oh, my God!

562. Steve...

563. are you gonna rape me?

564. I'm not gonna rape you.

565. I like you, Noa. I like you.

566. All right?

567. Now, I want you to listen to me very carefully, okay?

568. Are you listening to me?

569. There you are.

570. I'm gonna tell you now.

571. I'm gonna sell your meat.

572. People pay me a lot of money for it.

573. And your hair.

574. And weird shit like that.

575. It's a thing.

576. So...

577. I'm not... (CHUCKLES) I'm not gonna kill you...

578. uh, right away...

579. Because the fresher the meat, the better.

580. So I'm gonna keep you alive for as long as I can.

581. Unless you act up.

582. All right? But listen, until then,

583. I'm gonna take care of you.

584. I'm gonna cook for you.

585. I'm actually a really good cook.

586. You don't know it yet.

587. As long as you don't act up, nothing bad has to happen, all right?

588. And look. This isn't bad, right?

589. By the way, look at the sunset. Look...

590. Hey, hey, hey, hey...

591. - Come here. Come here. - No! No! No!

592. It's okay. It's okay.

593. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.

594. (SCREAMING) No! No!

595. (WHISPERING) Be quiet. Calm down.

596. Stop being so dramatic.

597. (WHISPERING) It's okay.

598. It's okay.

599. There you go.

600. Hi, where the fuck are you?

601. You're getting me all freaked out.

602. Call me or text me.

603. And I wanna hear where he took you.

604. Trippin'.

605. (SHOUTING) Help me!

606. He's not here.

607. Help me!

608. Help me, please! Please! Please, I'll do anything!

609. I can't... I can't help you.

610. We're in the same boat.

611. Fuck!

612. Tell me your name.

613. Noa.

614. I'm Penny.

615. I was in town visiting.

616. Met Steve.

617. Now I'm slowly...

618. being eaten.

619. How long have you been here? (SNIFFLES)

620. I've lost track.

621. I'm not even sure what time of day it is, to be honest. (CHUCKLES)

622. People have to be looking for you.

623. Your... Your...

624. Your friends, your family, the police.

625. People have to be searching by now.

626. The problem is,

627. I don't have much family. (CHUCKLES)

628. (WHIMPERS) Me neither.

629. Makes sense.

630. Are there others?

631. Just one other besides us, I think.

632. (SHOUTS) Hey, Melissa, can you hear me?

633. (CHUCKLES) She's lost her mind.

634. But I get it. (LAUGHING)

635. No judgment here.

636. We have to get out of here.

637. Hmm...

638. - (CLATTERING) Motherfucking...

639. Okay.

640. Fuck.

641. Hey.

642. How are you?

643. (STEVE CLICKS TONGUE) Still angry.

644. At least try the cake.

645. I need to shower.

646. Alone?

647. (CHUCKLES) It's a joke. It was a stupid joke.

648. I'm trying, you know? I'm trying to...

649. I'm trying to make you laugh and it's not working.

650. Can't you just give me one smile, please?

651. Just one?

652. Is that a yes?

653. (SOFTLY) Okay.

654. God, I mean, (SIGHS)

655. you're gonna have to loosen up a little bit.

656. I know things are a little different,

657. but it's still me, you know?

658. Still the guy I was at the bar that night.

659. I meant everything I said to you.

660. Just...

661. no games, right? No projections?

662. Isn't that what you wanted?

663. Are you gonna be good?

664. - (BOTH GRUNT) - Bad girl.

665. (SINGING MUFFLEDLY) I don't wanna lose you

666. I don't want you walking away

667. We're so good together

668. (SLURRING) I can't move.

669. I know.

670. I gave you an epidural, so you won't feel much.

671. (SLURRING) What are you doing?

672. Hmm...

673. I'm taking your ass.

674. No.

675. Yes. - No.

676. You lost my trust, Noa.

677. So there are gonna have to be consequences.

678. (SINGING) Don't leave me here with my restless heart

679. (WHIMPERING) Please.

680. I'm cauterizing your ass so you won't be a bloody mess.

681. - (SLURRING) Please stop. - Noa, it's gonna be okay.

682. Hey, I'm a doctor, remember?

683. Hey.

684. Yo.

685. Thanks for letting me stop by.

686. Yeah, well, you didn't really give me a choice, so...

687. Boy, stop acting like you didn't wanna see me.

688. And I wanted to see your face again.

689. - You wanted to see my face? - Yeah.

690. (CHUCKLES) You wanted to see my face.

691. I did.

692. Mollie, you ain't never gonna change. I still can't give you his info.

693. - If I even had it. - (SIGHS)

694. Come on, please?

695. It's the only connection that I have right now.

696. Why don't you just go to the police?

697. - The police. - Yeah.

698. And say what?

699. That my best friend went away with a guy

700. and extended her trip and she's texting me,

701. but I don't think it's her?

702. Why not? She white, right?

703. - (CHUCKLES) - Don't do that.

704. No, I'm playin', I'm playin'. Listen, I get it.

705. I get it. But I could lose my job, Mollie.

706. Look, she wouldn't just disappear like this, okay?

707. Look, I can tell you when they were here.

708. (SIGHS) Mollie.

709. She told me that you were their bartender

710. and he must have used a credit card, right?

711. Look, even just his last name would be a huge help.

712. Please?

713. What are you doing?

714. (SIGHS) She's doing the pouty lip.

715. Don't do the pouty lip. Don't do that.

716. - (SIGHS) - Just think about it. For me?

717. I'll think about it.

718. Can we shake on it? - You remember that?

719. - Do you remember it? - Do I...

720. Shit.

721. - Hey. - Get outta here.

722. You lookin' good, by the way.

723. - Me? - Mmm-hmm.

724. - It's the beard. - Mmm.

725. Yeah, it's connecting now.

726. Got this new beard oil.

727. Noa.

728. How's your ass?

729. Still gone.

730. The pain meds are helping me not care as much.

731. He's so sweet, right?

732. I just wanna hurt him, Penny.

733. It's all I think about.

734. I can't believe I slept with him.

735. Wait,

736. you fucked him?

737. I never did. (CHUCKLES)

738. I don't think any of the others did either.

739. I am not slut-shaming you, by the way.

740. I'd say it's a compliment.

741. I'm so fucking stupid.

742. No. You're not.

743. (CHUCKLES) It is not our fault, Noa.

744. (VOICE SHAKING) It's...

745. always...

746. theirs.

747. - What... - (MACHINE WHIRRING)

748. The fuck?

749. Get the fuck off me.

750. Fuck.

751. Wow, you did it.

752. Mom, I made it!

753. - (DOOR SLIDES OPEN) Extra cherries.

754. You've earned it.

755. Oh, fuck. (SIGHS)

756. I'm so tired.

757. Woke up at 2:00 a.m. last night going, "Really? Now?"

758. (SIGHS) I had to be up at 6:00.

759. Then you know you're not going back to sleep.

760. You're up fuckin' three hours later. How are the meds?

761. Great, great, great.

762. Still in denial?

763. Yeah. Well...

764. Look, it's gonna take a little time,

765. but eventually, you're gonna learn to accept

766. that things don't always turn out the way you thought they would.

767. You know, we all die.

768. But it's really just how we decide to go out.

769. Why did you sleep with me, Steve?

770. I told you, I, um...

771. I told you, I liked you.

772. Anyway, it was a mistake.

773. All right, try to relax.

774. Fear and stress isn't good for the meat.

775. Penny?

776. Penny, please, just answer already.

777. Please, Penny.

778. Penny!

779. What do you want?

780. Oh, fuck.

781. Jesus.

782. Now, was that so hard?

783. (SHAKILY) I'm done, Noa.

784. No, you're not.

785. I don't even know who I am anymore.

786. I hope he fucking chokes.

787. And then he gets a fucking tapeworm.

788. And it just eats him from the inside, slowly.

789. And that all his weirdo friends

790. shit and puke out of their eyes

791. till they all fucking die.

792. You're such a sweetheart, Penny.

793. Just...

794. stay strong.

795. Okay?

796. - I'll get you those nuts. - Thanks.

797. (OVER INTERCOM) Whatever you're selling,

798. I'm not interested.

799. Oh, no. I'm not selling anything. Sorry.

800. (CLEARS THROAT) My name is Mollie, and...

801. Do I know you?

802. No.

803. But I'm looking for my friend, Noa,

804. and I was hoping you could help me.

805. I think your husband might know her.

806. It really should only take a minute.

807. You do realize how strange that sounds, right?

808. Yes, I do, and, um...

809. I don't really know how to say this, but, um...

810. I think she may have been seeing your husband.

811. What are you talking about?

812. Hi.

813. Hi.

814. Do you need anything?

815. No. Thank you.

816. Okay.

817. What does it taste like?

818. Well...

819. It depends on where it comes from and how it's prepared.

820. But...

821. if it's done right...

822. it's fucking exquisite.

823. It's like nothing you've ever had before.

824. Hmm.

825. That's it?

826. Go up to the playroom while I make dinner, okay?

827. Yeah! I got here first!

828. Listen, um...

829. I'm not even positive that's my husband in the picture.

830. You can't really see the face.

831. Plus I saw him this morning before he went to work, so...

832. - Here. - Thanks.

833. Honestly, this is... This is crazy.

834. You should go to the police if you're so worried about your friend.

835. (CHUCKLES) Um...

836. Does he ever go out of town

837. - for work or anything? - No.

838. Well, they went away to Cottage Grove, like, a week ago,

839. and I haven't heard from her since then and I'm just...

840. I don't know where that is.

841. - I'm just worried, okay? - Yeah, I understand.

842. I'm really sorry.

843. - Um... - (DOOR OPENS)

844. That's my husband right now. You need to leave, okay?

845. I'm just desperate. Woman-to-woman, maybe your husband has more information.

846. I'm not trying to mess anything up for anybody here.

847. I'm just trying to find my friend.

848. Hey. Hey.

849. - Hello. Hi. - Hey.

850. - What's going on? Nothing.

851. Nothing. This woman was just leaving.

852. You're Steve, right?

853. No, I'm Brendan.

854. But you go by Steve, right?

855. No. Just Brendan. Who are you?

856. I'm Mollie. Um...

857. My friend Noa, uh, I think you know her, she's missing.

858. Noa. Um... (EXHALES SHARPLY)

859. No, I'm sorry, I... I don't.

860. Um...

861. - Do you, honey? - No, of course not.

862. That's terrible. Yeah, I don't know, I think you have the wrong house.

863. Yeah. Yeah, you're probably right.

864. Okay.

865. - I'm sorry. Sorry about that. - No.

866. We're sorry we couldn't help you.

867. Sorry about your friend.

868. I'm just thinking, when's the last time you saw her?

869. Oh, it's you.

870. (CHUCKLES) Mollie, right?

871. Really shouldn't have done that.

872. Noa said we'd get along.

873. Fuck!

874. Let's see.

875. So...

876. why did you ask me what it tasted like?

877. Um... (GRUNTS)

878. I don't know.

879. I guess I was... curious.

880. You were curious?

881. You expect me to believe that?

882. You can believe what you want.

883. Okay.

884. Let's have dinner and we'll see how curious you are.

885. Brought you some stuff. Figured you might wanna...

886. change.

887. Mmm.

888. Fuck.

889. - (WATER RUNNING) - The boys go down okay?

890. Mmm-hmm. They asked for you.

891. How was work?

892. Good.

893. Actually, I'm gonna be late tomorrow night.

894. Lots to do now with the new product.

895. Got some big clients expecting deliveries.

896. I'm gonna take a shower.

897. Good teamwork today.

898. Don't worry, I'm not gonna drug you.

899. Again.

900. You better not.

901. Cheers.

902. Cheers.

903. So you mentioned you were curious.

904. Yeah.

905. All right, what do you wanna know?

906. Well...

907. Um...

908. When did you first try it?

909. - (DISHES CLATTERING) Um...

910. I was, um, 18 or 19.

911. Nineteen, yeah.

912. And, look...

913. it wasn't an overnight thing, you know?

914. First, I was actually horrified.

915. I mean, how could possibly be capable of doing something like this?

916. You know, I was a normal kid, I had friends, I had a normal life,

917. and now I gotta deal with this thing

918. that I couldn't share with anybody.

919. And that killed me.

920. But I couldn't stop thinking about it.

921. I couldn't get the, um, taste out of my mouth.

922. The texture.

923. I liked it. I liked the way it made me feel.

924. So I thought, "I gotta find out if there's more out there," you know.

925. "I can't possibly be the only person that feels this way."

926. And I wasn't.

927. There's a whole community of people that are devoted to this.

928. And that's when my life started making sense.

929. I mean, it's...

930. It's a very powerful thing.

931. This whole world, if you only knew. It's, um...

932. It's about giving.

933. Giving yourself over to somebody.

934. Becoming one with somebody else, forever.

935. And that's...

936. That's a beautiful thing.

937. That's surrender.

938. That's love.

939. And how many people are in this community?

940. Not many.

941. The one percent of the one percent.

942. You know, there's nothing these people can't afford, right?

943. They want the one thing

944. that no one else has

945. or can get.

946. And that's where I come in.

947. I can get it for them.

948. I made a name for myself. (CRUSHING PEPPER)

949. Is it only women that you eat?

950. Yeah.

951. Why?

952. That's where the market is.

953. Plus, women just taste better.

954. So...

955. I cooked us something.

956. If you're open to trying it.

957. Is it...

958. Is it me?

959. No.

960. We'll have a bite together.

961. This meal is about $30,000.

962. That's crazy.

963. Be a lot more if she was still alive.

964. Hope.

965. That was her name.

966. Kinda funny.

967. (CHUCKLES) It's kinda funny.

968. Stupid.

969. It's not what I expected.

970. It's, um...

971. It's indescribable.

972. Thank you, Steve.

973. You're welcome, Noa.

974. You know how I knew you were special?

975. 'Cause you're fucked up, too.

976. All right. Let's go.

977. Noa!

978. Penny. Yeah?

979. That definitely didn't sound like Melissa.

980. Yeah.

981. Sounds like someone new.

982. You know, the other night,

983. I was thinking

984. about how nice

985. it's been to talk to you.

986. But then I was like, what if you're not real...

987. and I'm just going crazy? (CHUCKLES)

988. Like Melissa.

989. But I feel like if I had an imaginary friend,

990. I wouldn't name her Noa.

991. It'd be, like...

992. Sean Connery.

993. I wish I could see you.

994. Me, too.

995. I have something for you.

996. Go ahead.

997. Open it.

998. Do you like it?

999. (CLICKS TONGUE) It's pink.

1000. I love it. (CHUCKLES)

1001. Thank you.

1002. Maybe you can wear it tonight and, uh,

1003. we can have dinner again.

1004. Yeah. Okay.

1005. I'll pick you up at 7:00.

1006. I have no idea what time it is.

1007. I know.

1008. Sure.

1009. Maybe you can freshen up.

1010. Well, hello.

1011. Hi.

1012. I see we've made it to the dinner table.

1013. Yes, we have.

1014. Is, um...?

1015. Is this a date, Steve?

1016. Maybe it is.

1017. - Ooh. - Well...

1018. All right.

1019. It's gonna be an interesting night.

1020. Yeah.

1021. It is.

1022. - (CHUCKLES) - Great.

1023. Let's get drunk.

1024. I was thinking about what you said that night.

1025. About growing up alone and all.

1026. Made me realize nobody's ever really cooked for you.

1027. And that made me sad.

1028. Everyone has to have someone cook for them once.

1029. Pate.

1030. - (MUNCHING) - Liver.

1031. And garlic and rosemary.

1032. - Mmm. - Mmm.

1033. I do taste the garlic.

1034. Definitely. Whoa.

1035. You can make it next time. Just the way you like it.

1036. Who's this?

1037. - This? - Mmm.

1038. This is Melissa.

1039. Melissa.

1040. I mean, that's so boring.

1041. Isn't it? (CHUCKLES)

1042. Like, she...

1043. She tastes so, you know, decadent...

1044. and her name's Melissa. (CHUCKLES)

1045. Well...

1046. Thought you were gonna say something, you know, like,

1047. Joy.

1048. Guess we finished all of Hope.

1049. Oh, no, there's more Hope left.

1050. Did Melissa ever get a candlelit dinner?

1051. Welcome to my world.

1052. The clients wanna feel closer to the women.

1053. They become a part of you in some way.

1054. There's Melissa.

1055. And no, she never had a candlelight dinner.
