1. In October 1957, the Soviet Union launched

2. the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit.

3. Their achievement fueled a space race between the United States and the Soviets.

4. There has been some debate about what followed,

5. but I was there, and this is the real story. Mostly.

6. Until two days ago,

7. that sound had never been heard on this earth.

8. America attempted to launch her satellite

9. with disastrous results.

10. The Soviet Union has sent a man into space

11. and brought him back alive.

12. The Soviets made the most of the flight

13. in their worldwide propaganda. Naturally, there was jubilation in Russia.

14. Recognizing the head start obtained by the Soviets,

15. I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal,

16. before this decade is out,

17. of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.

18. We choose to go to the moon in this decade

19. and do the other things, not because they are easy,

20. but because they are hard.

21. Because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept,

22. one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.
