1928. that articulates the horizontal stabilizer,

1929. also known as the elevator.

1930. As you can see,

1931. the threads on this screw are almost entirely gone.

1932. This part was suggested as a maintenance replacement

1933. in January of 2011. It was never replaced.

1934. It had an additional 1,200 hours of flight on it.

1935. It finally failed.

1936. Our investigators have concluded

1937. that the jackscrew snapped

1938. and the elevator was frozen in a fixed position,

1939. locking the elevator in a down position,

1940. which forced the plane into a dive.

1941. The loss of the elevator was, and I quote our report,

1942. "A catastrophic event from which recovery was improbable

1943. "and stable flight impossible."

1944. Mr. Whitaker,

1945. I want to talk about the days leading

1946. and the hours leading up to the accident.
