6. I need you to make these deliveries.

7. Hey, Chi—

8. Ah!

9. Feelin' bad?

10. I've felt better.

11. Kid, I've probably slept longer than you've lived.

15. - It's 150 a week. - All right.

16. Are you employed?

17. Self-employed.

18. May I ask what you do?

19. I'm a writer.

20. Oh!

21. Have you written books?

22. Well, I'm not ready for a novel yet.

23. Okay.

24. Now most guys think they know how to drive.

25. But the fact is, very few people know how to drive.

26. They just steer.

27. Every day, I see two, three people simply run through red lights

28. like they didn't exist.

29. The lives people live are driving them crazy,

30. and their insanity comes out in the way they drive.

31. I'm not here to tell you how to live.

32. I'm here to teach you how to drive.

39. Now, come on. When is the only time

40. a man can lose control of his cab and he won't be able to help it?

41. - Um... - Yes, Chinaski.

42. Yeah, a man might lose control of his cab, uh...

44. That's correct.

45. All right. When you sneeze, what do you do?

46. - Are you Henry Chinaski? - Yes, sir.

47. Follow me.

48. Sit down.

49. We ran a check on you, Chinaski.

50. You have 18 drunk and disorderly arrests,

55. As we live, we all get caught and torn

56. by various traps.

57. Writing can trap you.

58. Some writers tend to write what has pleased their readers

59. in the past.

60. They hear accolades and believe them.

61. There is only one final judge of writing,

62. and that is the writer.

63. When he is swayed by the critics, the editors,

64. the publishers, the readers, then he's finished.

65. And of course, when he's swayed with his fame and his fortune,

66. you can float him down the river with the turds.

67. - A writer, huh? Yes.

68. Are you sure?

69. No, I'm not.

70. Why do you wanna work in a pickle factory?

71. It reminds me of my grandmother.

72. It does?

73. She used to, um...

74. serve me pickles whenever I visited her.

75. What do you write?

76. Mostly short stories.

77. I'm halfway through a novel.

78. What's it about?

79. Everything.

80. You mean, for instance, it's about... cancer?

81. Yes.

82. How about my wife?

83. She's in there, too.

84. I wrote three or four short stories a week.

85. I kept things in the mail.

86. I imagined how the editors at the New Yorker must be reacting.

87. Hey, here's another one of those things from that nut.

88. I sent most of them to John Martin,

89. whose magazine Black Sparrow I admired.

90. Chinaski.

91. Wanna step in here for a minute?

92. Mr. Gentry's a writer, too.

93. I told him that you were a writer, and he wanted to meet you.

94. You don't mind, do you?

95. I don't mind.

96. Mr. Gentry's a friend of mine.

97. Do you mind if I leave?

98. Okay.

100. those cigars, the fine clothes.

101. I thought of good steaks, long rides up winding driveways

102. that led to beautiful homes.

103. Ooh.

104. Trips to Europe.

105. Fine women.

106. Hey, Chinaski, what are ya doin'?

107. Chinaski, get back to work. Your shift's not over.

108. - I'm gonna get a drink. - No, no, you can't get a drink.

109. - What? - Come on, get back to work.

110. - Over here. - All right, all right.

111. Hey, hey!

112. Get off me!

113. - Okay? - I'm fine.

114. I don't need this!

115. And then I met Jan.

116. I bought her a drink, and she gave me her phone number.

117. Three days later, I moved into her apartment.

118. Jan had her $500 car.

119. The big trick with that car was how to turn on the headlights.

120. Of course, we had the advantage of broken springs.

121. - ( both panting ) Fuck! Fuck!

122. Jan was an excellent fuck.

123. She had a tight pussy,

124. and she took it like it was a knife that was killing her.

125. Hey, I wanna know what time it is.

126. You said you'd fix the clock.

127. All right, let's see.

128. We set the clock by the TV at midnight last night.

129. We know that it gains 35 minutes every hour.

130. Um... it says 7:30 p.m. right now, but we know that's not right

131. because it's not dark enough yet. Okay.

132. That's 7 and a half hours, 7 times 35 minutes.

133. That's... 245 minutes.

134. One half of 35 is...

135. Seventeen and one half.

136. That gives us...

137. - 200... - ( sighs )

138. and 52 and one-half minutes.

139. Okay, that's...

140. 4 hours and 42 and one-half minutes we owe them.

141. So we set the clock back to 5:47. That's it.

142. It's 5:47.

143. It's dinnertime, and we don't have anything to eat.

144. Let's open another jug of wine.

145. Should I make some pancakes?

146. No, I don't know if I could get another one of them down.

147. Oh, come on.

148. Okay, put the pancakes on.

149. Oh, we're still out of butter.

150. Well, fry 'em dry again.

151. They will be crisp... real crisp.

152. That's okay, baby.

153. Who is that?

154. Wake up. Everybody in the hall.

155. What is that?

156. - ( knocking on doors ) Anyone in there?

157. It's just the fire department.

158. - ( siren continues ) Watch your step.

159. I finally got hired at a bicycle supply warehouse.

160. I had to demean myself to get that one.

161. I told them that I like to think of my job as a second home.

162. Play the horses?

163. Yeah.

164. Mind if I look at your paper?

165. Sure.

166. My Boy Bobby oughta take the eighth.

167. I know. They don't even have him on top.

168. All the better.

169. What do ya think it'll pay at?

170. About 9 to 2.

171. What time's the last race go off?

172. 5:30.

173. - We get off at 5:00. - Never make it.

174. We can try. Racetrack's not too far.

175. - Wanna come along? - Sure.

176. Keep your eye on the clock. We'll cut out at five to 5:00.

177. See? Told you we'd make it.

178. Thank you.

179. Hey, My Boy Bobby's in the front.

180. He's in the lead!

181. We've hooked ourselves a winner!

182. Unless some big-ass closer comes out of the back of the pack.

183. Come on! Come on, Bobby! Come on, come on!

184. Come on! Yes! Yes!

185. We should have bet another $200 on that horse.

186. - You're right. - Come on, let's go get a drink.

187. All right. Excuse me.

188. The next day at work, some of the other employees asked us

189. if we would place bets for them.

190. Hank, we have to take their bets.

191. Manny, those guys don't have any money.

192. All they've got is their coffee and chewing gum money

193. that their wives give them.

194. We don't have time to waste at the $2 windows.

195. We're not gonna bet their money. We're gonna keep their money.

196. Suppose they win?

197. They won't win. They always pick the wrong horse.

198. They have a way of always picking the wrong horse.

199. Suppose they bet our horse?

200. Then we know we got the wrong horse.

201. I think she's gonna do it.

202. I think she's gonna do it! Come on, Spitfire! Let's go!

203. Go, Spitfire! Let's go!

204. Yes! Way to go! Oh, great!

205. - You married, Manny? - No way. No.

206. - Women? - Sometimes.

207. - It never lasts. - What's the problem?

208. A woman is like a full-time job.

209. You have to choose your profession.

210. Yeah, I suppose there is an emotional drain.

211. Oh, physical, too. They wanna fuck night and day.

212. Well, get one you like to fuck.

213. Yeah, but if you drink or gamble,

214. they think it's a putdown of their love.

215. Well, get one who likes to drink, gamble and fuck.

216. Who wants a woman like that?

217. I bought some expensive clothes and a good pair of shoes.

218. The owner of the bike supply warehouse

219. didn't look so powerful anymore.

220. Manny and I took a little longer with our lunches

221. and came back smoking good cigars.

222. The new life didn't sit well with Jan.

223. She was used to her four fucks a day,

224. and also used to seeing me poor and humble.

225. Mr. Horse Player.

226. Mr. Big Horse Player.

227. You know, when I first met you,

228. I liked the way you walked across a room.

229. You didn't just walk across a room.

230. You walked like you were walkin' through walls,

231. like you owned the place, like nothin' mattered.

232. Now you got a few bucks in your pocket,

233. you're not the same anymore.

234. You act like you're a dental student or a plumber.

235. Don't give me any shit about plumbers, Jan.

236. You haven't made love to me in two weeks.

237. Love takes many forms. Mine has been more subtle.

238. You haven't fucked me in two weeks.

239. Have some patience.

240. In six months, we'll be vacationing in Rome and Paris.

241. Look at you.

242. Pourin' yourself that good whiskey,

243. lettin' me sit here drinkin' this rotgut wine.

244. You're Mr. Big Time Horse Player.

245. I give you soul, I give you wisdom,

246. I give you light and music and some laughter.

247. By the way, I am the world's greatest horse player.

248. Horse shit!

249. No! Horse player!

250. I understood too well

251. that great lovers were always men of leisure.

252. I fucked better as a bum than as a puncher of time clocks.

253. I wanted to go ever since I was a kid.

254. It's quite nice, actually. Yeah, I bet.

255. You know, I try to make a woman out of you

256. but you're nothin' but a goddamn whore!

257. If anybody here doesn't like what I just did,

258. then say something!

259. Sit down, Chinaski.

260. You knew we were gonna let you go.

261. Yeah. Bosses are never hard to fathom.

262. You haven't been pullin' your weight around here

263. for over a month, and you know it.

264. You know, a guy busts his damn ass,

265. and you don't even appreciate it.

266. You haven't been busting your ass, Chinaski.

267. I've given you my time, which is all I've got to give.

268. All any man has— for a pitiful six bucks an hour.

269. You remember, you begged for this job.

270. You said your job was your second home.

271. I give you my time so you can live in your big house.

272. If anybody's lost anything on this deal, on this arrangement,

273. I've been the loser.

274. You understand?

275. All right, Chinaski.

276. - All right? - Yeah. Just go.

277. Now listen, Mantz.

278. I don't want any trouble about my unemployment payments.

279. You guys are always trying to cheat the working man

280. out of his rights.

281. So don't give me any trouble, or I'll be back to see ya.

282. You'll get your unemployment. Now get the hell outta here.

283. I didn't see Manny again...

284. and I missed the trips to the track with him.

285. But I had my winnings and the bookie money.

286. I just sat around, and Jan liked that.

287. After two weeks, I was on unemployment,

288. and we relaxed and fucked and toured the bars.

289. And every week, I'd go down to the unemployment,

290. stand in line and get my nice little check.

291. Hank.

292. Love you.

293. $10 try on the four with one and two.

294. The racetrack crowd is the world brought down to size.

295. Life grinding against death and losing.

296. Nobody wins finally.

297. We're only seeking a reprieve.

298. A moment out of the glare.

299. - Sir, you're in our seats. - These seats aren't reserved.

300. There are no reserved seats in this section.

301. I know there are no reserved seats in this section.

302. But it's a common courtesy.

303. You see, some people get here early—

304. poor people like you and me—

305. who can't afford reserved seats, and they lay down newspapers

306. to indicate that these seats are saved.

307. Because if the poor aren't going to be decent with one another,

308. nobody else is going to be.

309. I'm not poor.

310. If you can't be a gentleman, at least don't be a hog.

311. Jan, sit down.

312. I'll stand.

313. Let's get a drink.

314. That man in our seats— he's got nerve.

315. I don't like the guy.

316. He sure got your goat.

317. He was just a little guy. What was I supposed to do with him?

318. Bullshit. If he'd been big, you wouldn't have done anything either.

319. What do you do for a living?

320. Real estate.

321. I make 500,000 a year.

322. Why don't you get yourself a reserved seat?

323. That's my prerogative.

324. You know, you have the nicest blue eyes.

325. Uh-huh.

326. Got a cigarette?

327. Pardon me, sir, but you're in my seat.

328. Yeah? What are you gonna do about it?

329. Pardon me.

330. Come on, baby.

331. Whoo!

332. How do you feel?

333. I feel bad.

334. I wanna be alone.

335. You don't have enough love. It's warped ya.

336. People don't need love.

337. What they need is success of some form or another.

338. Can be love, but it doesn't have to be.

339. The Bible says love thy neighbor.

340. That could also mean leave 'em alone.

341. My half is yours.

342. It's another woman, isn't it?

343. No.

344. - You don't love me anymore? - Stop that shit, would ya?

345. You're tired of fuckin' me, aren't you?

346. Hank, stay with me.

347. Here, take it.

348. You'll manage.

349. Hank...

350. Even at my lowest times, I can feel the words bubbling inside of me.

351. And I had to get the words down

352. or be overcome by something worse than death.

353. Words not as precious things, but as necessary things.

354. Yet when I begin to doubt my ability to work the word,

355. I simply read another writer,

356. and then I know I have nothing to worry about.

357. My contest is only with myself to do it right...

358. with power and force,

359. and delight and gamble.

360. Yes, I'll have a Scotch, please.

361. Bartender, I'll have another one.

362. Get the little lady whatever she's having.

363. That drink was my last. I'm broke.

364. Are you serious?

365. - You have a place to stay? - No.

366. And you haven't got any money or anything to drink.

367. No.

368. Two Evan Williams, a six-pack of beer...

369. two packs of cigarettes...

370. some chips, some mixed nuts...

371. some Alka-Seltzer.

372. A good cigar.

373. Cash or credit card?

374. Charge it to Pierre.

375. I'll have to phone him.

376. - Where we goin'? - My place.

377. - It's okay. - Thank you.

378. - I like this kind of music. - Yes.

379. Swell.

380. - What? - You're great.

381. You think you're hot shit.

382. - No. - Yes.

383. I could tell by the way you act.

384. I like you though.

385. I liked you right away.

386. Hike up your skirt.

387. You like legs?

388. Yes.

389. Hey, you're not some kind of maniac, are you?

390. There's a guy's been pickin' up girls,

391. cuts crossword puzzles into their bodies with a pen knife.

392. Well, I write...

393. but I'm not him.

394. Then there are guys who fuck you and chop you into little pieces.

395. Find your ass in a drainpipe in the ocean.

396. Tit in a trashcan downtown.

397. I stopped doing that years ago.

398. Stand back from the door.

399. He's got a camera that lets him see who's at the door.

400. Let him just see me, then when the buzzer sounds,

401. you follow me in.

402. Sweetie. So good to see you.

403. ( laughing ) Oh, Pierre.

404. Hi.

405. How are you?

406. Who's the guy?

407. Oh, I want you to meet a friend of mine.

408. Hi.

409. Pierre, this is Henry Chinaski.

410. Good to know you, Pierre.

411. - Come on in. - Thank you.

412. You're so good, Pierre. You're so good! You're a good person.

413. Hey, girls.

414. Hey, this is Henry Chinaski.

415. Henry, this is Grace, and this is Jerry.

416. - Hi there. - How you doin'?

417. Help yourself.

418. So what do you do?

419. - He's a writer. Hmm.

420. I need somebody to do a libretto for an opera I wrote.

421. It's called The Emperor of San Francisco.

422. Did you know there was a guy who claimed he was

423. the emperor of San Francisco?

424. No, I didn't.

425. It's a real story. It's very interesting.

426. You look like you've been around.

427. You look like you've got class.

428. Would you like to hear some music from my opera?

429. Yes, I'd like that very much.

430. If it's okay with you.

431. Great.

432. - Whoo hoo! Yay! Bravo!

433. Marvelous.

434. Ah.

435. - Ha ha! - ( drops coins )

436. He's a tight son of a bitch.

437. He likes to take care of the girls in the bars

438. that have no place to sleep.

439. But all he gives them is food and a bed.

440. Never any money.

441. And they only have drinks when he's drinking.

442. Jerry got to him one night though.

443. He was horny.

444. He was chasing her around the table.

445. She said, "No, not unless you give me 1,000 bucks a month for life."

446. - He signed a piece of paper... - Uh-huh.

447. Gave her 1,000 bucks a month.

448. Even after he dies, his family will have to pay her.

449. Jerry's his main girl though.

450. What about you?

451. Not for a long time.

452. I like you.

453. You do?

454. Watch, watch, watch.

455. Tomorrow, if he comes out with that sailor's cap on—

456. - with that captain's cap— - Uh-huh.

457. Means we're goin' out on his yacht.

458. - Hmm. - Doctors made him get a yacht.

459. Is it a long one?

460. Sure.

461. We're going out on the yacht.

462. - We are going back. What for?

463. Grace is having one of those moments.

464. Won't speak to me.

465. She just stands there staring at the water.

466. I'm afraid she'll jump off the boat.

467. She can't swim.

468. Just give her 50 bucks.

469. No. We're going back.

470. This happens every time we try to go out.

471. Grace goes into one of her moods,

472. stands there staring at the ocean.

473. She's never gonna jump overboard.

474. ( yelling ) She hates water!

475. Pierre died shortly after that.

476. Laura and I split up,

477. and I never saw any of them again.

478. - Hi, Mom. - Is that you?

479. Yeah. I just need a place to sleep for a couple of days.

480. Your bedroom is always waiting.

481. Your father's home.

482. Thanks, Ma.

483. Hey, Dad.

484. Thanks.

485. You got a job?

486. No.

487. Any man wants work can find work.

488. I suppose you're right.

489. Can't hardly believe you're my son.

490. You don't have any ambition, you don't have any get-up-and-go.

491. How the hell you gonna make it in this world?

492. Still think you're a writer?

493. I'm still writing.

494. You stay here, gonna charge you room and board plus laundry.

495. When you get a job,

496. what's yours we'll take outta your wages till you're paid up.

497. You're drunk.

498. Yes.

499. Where do you get the money to drink?

500. You don't have any money.

501. I'll get a job.

502. How?

503. You know, you act as if I murdered someone.

504. It's just as bad.

505. Are you finished?

506. Thanks for the food, Mom.

507. - You're not hungry? - No, but thank you.

508. Hey, Robert, what do you say you and I go out

509. and have a few cocktails?

510. You mean you wanna go drinkin' in the middle of the week without a job?

511. Well, that's when you need a drink the most.

512. I'm warnin' you.

513. I also need a piece of ass.

514. What's he sayin'?

515. I said I also need a piece of ass.

516. Alex!

517. Now you see the cartons.

518. We have three different types of cartons,
