155. The other is the lack of a cash surplus for the first time

156. in three years.

157. All News Time - No, disco.

158. - is 8:42, and turning to local news,

159. police report The Miami Strangler has struck again.

160. The bodies of Debbie Wamsley, a South Beach waitress,

166. (doorbell chimes) - Nothing.

167. Kinda nice around

168. South Florida this morning. - There's somebody

169. at the door. - 86 degrees in Miami.

170. 82 at the beach.

171. In West State at the Tamiami airport, rather warm, 90.

172. - I think someone wants you over there.

175. - No, wait.

176. Can I?

177. - Well, sure.

178. Does David want some coffee?

179. - Well, sure.

180. You know, I'd really like to be able to talk with her.

181. - It's not something you can just learn overnight.

182. You have to live with it.

183. - No more excuses, remember?

184. - Okay.

185. That wasn't so hard, was it?

186. - I really blew it at work yesterday.

187. This rapist thing is really getting to me.

188. - Well, I think you're being way too hard on yourself.

189. I mean, you've got to put the whole thing out of your mind.

190. Why waste time on something you can't do anything about?

191. Where's she going with those bags?

192. - To the laundry.

193. - Tracy does the laundry?

194. - Among other things.

195. - Ward, go to a CU on Jane.

196. - Police say the two had been dead for at least 12 hours.

197. Ironically, the bodies were discovered by detectives

198. following up a complaint of obscene phone calls

199. received last night.

200. Although an autopsy is being performed at this time

201. by the Dade County Medical Examiner, a preliminary report

202. indicates that the woman was sexually molested,

204. - Well, apparently Metro police have assigned

205. at least 15 detectives full-time to this case

206. and they are expecting a break very shortly.

207. We'll be right- Unfortunately, Roger,

208. it's too late for one more victim.

209. - Uh oh, there she goes again.

210. - Well, I'm sure the police are doing everything they can.

211. We'll be right back after this.

212. You okay?

213. - Yeah, I'm fine.

214. - Everybody's getting killed.

215. - Come on, Tracy.

216. Come on.

217. Tracy, you stay here.

218. Tracy, you stay here.

219. - Hello, Management Office, Jimmy here.

220. - Hi, Jimmy.

221. I bumped into a car last night in the garage

222. and I don't think there was any damage but I wanted

223. to leave a note just to be sure.

224. It's space 23.

225. Can you tell me whose that is?

226. - Anything you say, Miss Harris.

227. Let's have a look.

228. 21, 22, 23, (speaks In foreign language)

229. That's Mr. Stanley Herbert, apartment 1204,

230. over in the North Tower.

231. Hello, Miss Harris?

232. - 1204?

233. - Yeah, 1204, you're almost neighbors.

234. (eerie music) You should be able

235. to see each other.

236. - Hello, Rogers, Richardson, and McGowan.

237. I'm sorry, but everyone's gone home for the evening.

238. Is there anyone there?

239. Hello?

240. Hello?

241. - Is that you, Annette? (laughs)

242. - Look, why don't you go stick it in your ear

243. and then go jump in the Bay.

244. - I'm gonna stick it in you, Annette.

245. This is our song, Annette.

246. - Why don't you leave me alone, will ya?

247. I'm not interested.

248. I don't wanna hear it.

249. - Hello.

250. - Susan, I'm scared to death.

251. Somebody keeps calling me.

252. - Annette?

253. - He knows my name.

254. He knows where I work.

255. - Hey, hey, calm down.

256. You okay?

257. - Look, I can't take much more of this creep.

258. He's really getting to me.

259. He plays music.

260. - Music, what kind of music?

261. - I don't know.

262. It sounds like something out of a music box.

263. - You call the cops?

264. - No, I don't want any hassles.

265. I just wanna get out of here.

266. He's driving me crazy.

267. What are you up to?

268. Are you alone tonight?

269. - Yeah, like a good girl.

270. - Well, do you mind If I come over?

271. - Sure, come on.

272. - I'm on my way.

273. - Herbert, Stanley Herbert, and he wasn't wearing a belt.

274. Can you imagine a guy in a three-piece suit

275. and he wasn't wearing a belt?

276. David, are you listening to me?

277. - How does she do that?

278. - What?

279. - Make that turn like that.

280. - Oh, it's like putting your shoes on without looking.

281. - That makes sense.

282. - Yeah well, a guy changing his clothes in the garage

283. before he goes up to his apartment doesn't.

284. - Huh?

285. Come on, maybe this guy, Hubert.

286. - Herbert.

287. - All right, maybe this guy, Herbert.

288. Well, maybe he's a married man, and you know,

289. maybe he's having an affair with another woman.

290. Has that ever occurred to you?

291. - Come on, this is only hours after the police found

292. that couple killed, and the girl was strangled with a belt.

293. - That is known as circumstantial evidence.

294. Look, if the police went around arresting everybody who

295. wasn't wearing a belt, they'd run outta space in no time.

296. So what else?

297. - His shirt, it had stains on It.

298. - So maybe he's a slob.

299. - David.

300. - Look, if I were defending this guy, I could have him

301. outta jail before the judge ever banged his gavel.

302. Look, don't worry about it.

303. They'll catch this psycho, whoever he is.

304. Guys like that always make a mistake, and when they do-

305. - Now you're a psychologist.

306. - Look, I don't have to be one to see

307. that you're torturing yourself.

308. - David, I made a promise to myself that I'd never let

309. anything happen to Tracy again, no matter what I had to do.

310. - Well before you start to take the law into your own hands,

311. think for a minute.

312. I mean, Tracy gets along just fine.

313. Your building is secure.

314. - Come on, you can't be serious.

315. Nobody's really safe.

316. You know that.

317. - What's the matter?

318. - That car over there, it's really gettin' to me.

319. - Forget about it.

320. - Damn, I can't take this guy all night.

321. I'm gonna go out and give him a push.

322. - All right, but make it fast.

323. - Yeah, okay.

324. I'll be right back.

325. Hey, man, I think you could use a push.

326. - You can come in now.

327. - The test shows that the ocular nerves are normal

328. and there's no damage to the head.

329. - I don't understand.

330. What's wrong with her?

331. - We have conclusive evidence that the brain

332. has not been damaged.

333. - Oh, thank God.

334. - Then why can't she see or hear?

335. - We're really not sure.

336. - That's my baby, doctor.

337. You've got to do something.

338. - Tracy!

339. - Hello?

340. - Jane, Roger here.

341. I just came in and checked the news desk.

342. There's been another one.

343. I thought you'd wanna know.

344. - When?

345. - Last night, a secretary on her way home from work,

346. grabbed right out of her car.

347. They found her five miles away at a gravel pit

348. face down in the mud.

349. There were two other murders nearby.

350. - Did you say that she was found in the mud?

351. - Yeah, why?

352. - Nothing, I'll see you later.

353. - (indistinct) May I help you?

354. - Yes, may I have the number for Mr. Stanley Herbert please?

355. - One moment.

356. Stanley Herbert, H-E-R-B-E-R-T?

357. 822-1076.

358. - Good morning, Jimmy.

359. - Oh, hello, Miss Harris.

360. Sit down, please.

361. - Thank you.

362. - Would you like a cafecito?

363. - No thank you, but the juice machine is jammed again.

364. Can you help me out?

365. - No problem.

366. [I'll open it up for you.

367. - Oh, thank you.

368. It's those damn kids again.

369. They're always messing up that machine.

370. I'll be back with the juice just like that.

371. Don't go away.

372. - Okay.

373. - It will only be a minute.

374. - Excuse me.

375. When you spoke with her, did she seem upset?

376. - Yeah, she was upset, but I don't think that she ever

377. believed that she was in any immediate danger.

378. I mean, we all get calls like that at one time or another.

379. - Did she say anything else about the calls in particular?

380. - I don't think so.

381. Wait a moment.

382. She did mention something.

383. She said it was kind of eerie.

384. - What?

385. - There's some kind of music in the background like

386. a music box, or something like that.

387. - Stop it there.

388. This is a crazy question, but can a cuckoo clock make music

389. or does it just go cuckoo?

390. - I don't know.

391. I can't see why not.

392. Why?

393. - No special reason.

394. Now let's take five, okay?

395. - Jane, you are 20 minutes late.

396. - David, you won't believe it.

397. David.

398. David.

399. - What?

400. - There's something I wanna show you.

401. - What is this?

402. - It's his shoe.

403. - Shh.

404. - Sorry.

405. - Whose shoe?

406. - Stanley Herbert's.

407. - How did you get this?

408. - I took it from his apartment.

409. - You mean, you took this from his apartment?

410. - Right. - Shh.

411. - And David, look how muddy It Is.

412. - My God, Jane, are you nuts?

413. - Shh! - Shh!

414. - David.

415. David, you needed more proof so I searched his apartment

416. looking for something and this is what I came up with.

417. And I figure you must know somebody downtown who can compare

418. mud samples for you to prove to you that I'm right.

419. - You actually expect me to take this to the police?

420. - Yes.

421. - And just how do I explain your having it?

422. - Well, you'll think of something.

423. - Breaking and entering, burglary,

424. and I'm supposed to explain it.

425. Me, a criminal lawyer, explain this to the police.

426. - David, I need your help with this.

427. Now Tracy's home alone most nights and she's not

428. the only defenseless woman in this city.

429. - Well, has it ever occurred to you

430. that you're Mr. Herbert just may be innocent?

431. - No.

432. - You know, I can't believe you're doing this.

433. - Why can't you stop being an attorney long enough

434. to let yourself trust me?

435. - Why don't you stop being a reporter long enough to see

436. that you're getting in this too deep.

437. You're gonna get yourself hurt.

438. - I got that shoe to convince you.

439. - The only thing I'm convinced of is that you've gone

440. off the deep end.

441. Hey wait.

442. Look, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that.

443. - David, you're usually very clear.

444. - Come on, what are you doin'?

445. Wait a minute, Jane.

446. - Yes?

447. Is anyone there?

448. - I know what you're doing

449. and I know it's you, Mr. Herbert.

450. - Who is this?

451. - Never mind.

452. Let's talk about you, Mr. phone freak.

453. How does it feel to have the tables turned?

454. - I think you've got the wrong person.

455. - Oh?

456. If that's so, how come you haven't hung up yet?

457. What's the matter?

458. Cat got your tongue?

459. - What do you want?

460. - I want you to turn yourself in.

461. - Look, I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

462. Leave me alone.

463. - Goddammit, I had enough of this crap!

464. Stop calling me!

465. Stop calling me!

466. - You don't understand Mr. Herbert.

467. It's not up to you to decide.

468. - I was touched most by the victim's parents I talked to.

469. I don't think there's any way for me to convey the pain

470. and sense of loss these people must bear.

471. And it's not just until tomorrow's news overshadows

472. these tragedies, it's for the rest of their lives.

473. This segment is at an end, but the story isn't,

474. and it won't be until this killer is apprehended.

475. You, me, the authorities, all of us must work together.

476. The effort has to be made before this phone freak

477. strikes again, before another innocent woman falls prey.

478. This is Jane Harris reporting.

479. Back to you, Roger.

480. - That was a terrific report, Jane.

481. Is there anything - The effort has to

482. - Else our viewers - be made before this

483. phone freak strikes again.

484. Before this phone freak strikes again.

485. Before this phone freak strikes.

486. This is Jane Harris reporting.

487. This is Jane Harris reporting.

488. - It's not rainy, it's beautiful outside.

489. You don't believe me, you just open up your window

490. and say it's beautiful.

491. It starts at 6:04 in the morning and 11:30 PM at night.

492. Now let's go to the weather.

493. - Hi, this is Jane Harris speaking.

494. Sorry I'm not home at the moment,

495. but your message is being recorded electronically.

496. At the sound of the tone, speak as long as you like.

497. - Jane, David.

498. Listen, I just got the lab report on the shoe.

499. The mud samples match.

500. Jane, please don't do anything until I get there.

501. - Oh, Tracy!

502. Tracy!

503. Tracy!

504. Oh, Tracy.

505. - Jane?

506. - Tracy.
