1. Hi. It's me.
Copy !req
2. Oh, we're not ready yet?
Copy !req
3. Hi.
Copy !req
4. It's me, Jesse.
Copy !req
5. Are we there?
Copy !req
6. Good. We're there.
Copy !req
7. Well, this afternoon,
Copy !req
8. after a very lousy sketch
about yo-yoing,
Copy !req
9. I figure we'll, for lack of
anything better to do,
Copy !req
10. we'll take it towards a more
serious side right about now.
Copy !req
11. And we're going to conduct
an interview with
Copy !req
12. Arnold Friedman, my father.
Copy !req
13. I still feel like I knew
my father very well.
Copy !req
14. I don't think that just because
there were things in his life
Copy !req
15. that were private and
secret and shameful
Copy !req
16. that that means that
the father who I knew
Copy !req
17. and the things I knew about him
were in any way not real.
Copy !req
18. They're gonna put me
in the movies
Copy !req
19. They're gonna make
a big star out of me
Copy !req
20. We'll make a film about a man
that's sad and lonely
Copy !req
21. And all I got to do
is act naturally
Copy !req
22. Well, I'll bet you I'm
a- gonna be a big star
Copy !req
23. Might win an Oscar,
you can't never tell
Copy !req
24. The movies gonna
make me a big star
Copy !req
25. 'Cause I can play
the part so well
Copy !req
26. Well, I hope you come
to see me in the movies
Copy !req
27. Then I know that you
will plainly see
Copy !req
28. The biggest fool that's
ever hit the big time
Copy !req
29. And all I got to do
is act naturally
Copy !req
30. Arnold liked pictures.
Copy !req
31. I mean, that's, let's face it.
Copy !req
32. He liked pictures.
Copy !req
33. Well, we're here.
Copy !req
34. This is it, the whole
family assembled.
Copy !req
35. Everybody in
Great Neck, New York.
Copy !req
36. We had three sons.
Copy !req
37. David, being the oldest
Copy !req
38. had a lot of responsibility
when he was young.
Copy !req
39. Seth was an outright rebel.
Copy !req
40. And somehow, Jesse
was just like the
Copy !req
41. the one that keeps
trying to catch up
Copy !req
42. and doesn't quite make it.
Copy !req
43. I have very good memories
of the, of my, well,
Copy !req
44. I have very good memories
of my childhood.
Copy !req
45. I had a great time growing up.
Copy !req
46. I had a great time
because of my friends.
Copy !req
47. And my father was great.
Copy !req
48. I mean, he may not have
been the best father,
Copy !req
49. but he went to
Columbia University.
Copy !req
50. And then when he graduated,
he went to the Catskills
Copy !req
51. to play in his band.
Copy !req
52. The Jazzbo Mambo
Copy !req
53. With a boogie beat
Copy !req
54. Is the newest dance
on 52nd Street
Copy !req
55. The band was called Arnito Rey
and his Orchestra.
Copy !req
56. My father's name
was Arnold Friedman.
Copy !req
57. This was in the late
40's and early '50s.
Copy !req
58. So he played Latin music.
Copy !req
59. It was very big at the time,
Copy !req
60. and so he changed
his name to Arnito Rey.
Copy !req
61. We'll do a Jazzbo Mambo
8 to the bar
Copy !req
62. I don't know.
Copy !req
63. My dad was a cool guy, you know?
Copy !req
64. He was a schoolteacher.
Copy !req
65. And I think that the other kids
liked him, and he liked kids.
Copy !req
66. But he didn't like spending
a lot of time with his wife,
Copy !req
67. so he would teach high
school during the day
Copy !req
68. and then after school, he would
come home and teach
Copy !req
69. piano lessons and later computer
lessons in the house.
Copy !req
70. And that was, of course, more
time he didn't have to spend
Copy !req
71. with his wife.
Copy !req
72. I'm not that anxious to talk
about his father,
Copy !req
73. because, you know,
we were divorced, and
Copy !req
74. But his father, he would,
Copy !req
75. I don't really want
to talk about it.
Copy !req
76. In case anybody didn't know,
I'm the father of this family.
Copy !req
77. I'm never in the movies.
Copy !req
78. Never see me in any
of the pictures,
Copy !req
79. but I really am the father.
Copy !req
80. And we're all gathered
together
Copy !req
81. while David is messing up
the camera here.
Copy !req
82. Now he's taking a good movie
and zooming in and out.
Copy !req
83. When you see me on this,
you're gonna say
Copy !req
84. Okay, shut it.
Copy !req
85. He died of a surprise heart
attack about 5 years ago.
Copy !req
86. And it was very, very sad.
Copy !req
87. He was, you know,
Copy !req
88. selfless, altruistic.
Copy !req
89. But in the end, he wasn't
together with your mom?
Copy !req
90. He wasn't together
with my mother at the end.
Copy !req
91. And when did they make
the decision not to be together?
Copy !req
92. Long before he died?
Copy !req
93. Couple years before his death.
Copy !req
94. There's a lot I,
Copy !req
95. well, whatever.
Copy !req
96. There's some things I don't
want to talk about.
Copy !req
97. Well, this is private,
so if you don't,
Copy !req
98. if you're not me,
Copy !req
99. then you really shouldn't
be watching this,
Copy !req
100. because this is supposed to be
a private situation
Copy !req
101. between me and me.
Copy !req
102. This is between me now
and me in the future.
Copy !req
103. So turn it off.
Copy !req
104. Don't watch this.
Copy !req
105. This is private.
Copy !req
106. If you're the fucking,
oh, God, the cops.
Copy !req
107. And if you're
the fucking cops,
Copy !req
108. go fuck yourselves,
Copy !req
109. because you're full of shit.
Copy !req
110. Back in 1984, US Customs had
seized some child pornography,
Copy !req
111. addressed from
the Netherlands,
Copy !req
112. in the mail to Arnold Friedman.
Copy !req
113. Now, he never got that
piece of mail,
Copy !req
114. but his name was
forwarded on to us.
Copy !req
115. So what we would do then
would be to initiate
Copy !req
116. a correspondence with
Arnold in the hopes
Copy !req
117. that we can determine if he is
in fact willing to violate
Copy !req
118. the statute again about mailing
or receiving child pornography.
Copy !req
119. "Dear Stan, the book is
Joe, 14, and his uncle.
Copy !req
120. I think I'd like you to send me
something, sort of good faith,
Copy !req
121. and I will forward this rather
precious book to you.
Copy !req
122. Thanks, Arnie. "
Copy !req
123. See, it's very hard
to believe that
Copy !req
124. this so-called "good
marriage" was so disturbed.
Copy !req
125. He sent him these pictures,
and he sent him a note
Copy !req
126. that I remember, because
the lawyer got the note.
Copy !req
127. And then he wrote, "Enjoy. "
Copy !req
128. Since he had sent
the magazine,
Copy !req
129. he was always asking
for it back.
Copy !req
130. So I asked the prosecutors,
"Let's grant him his wish.
Copy !req
131. He wants his magazine back. "
Copy !req
132. I dressed up as a mail carrier,
knocked on his door,
Copy !req
133. asked him if he was
Arnold Friedman.
Copy !req
134. He replied he was.
Copy !req
135. And I said, "I have
a package for you.
Copy !req
136. Sign right here. "
Copy !req
137. He did.
Copy !req
138. About an hour later,
we went back.
Copy !req
139. We would give him some
time with the magazine.
Copy !req
140. I'm dressed now.
Copy !req
141. I just put a blue suit jacket
over the carrier's uniform.
Copy !req
142. And I told him, "I have a search
warrant for child pornography. "
Copy !req
143. He says, "There's nothin'
like that here. "
Copy !req
144. And I said,
"You don't recognize me?"
Copy !req
145. I'd just been at
his door an hour ago.
Copy !req
146. He goes, "No. "
Copy !req
147. And I took off my jacket, and I
said, "Now do you recognize me?"
Copy !req
148. "Oh, yeah. Oh, okay.
The magazine is upstairs. "
Copy !req
149. So we went up to his bedroom.
Copy !req
150. In the top dresser door
was the open magazine.
Copy !req
151. Well, he thought we would take
the magazine and leave,
Copy !req
152. and I said, "No, we have
a search warrant.
Copy !req
153. We're gonna search the whole
house for child pornography. "
Copy !req
154. And around that time
his wife showed up.
Copy !req
155. I thought they were
searching, like, for
Copy !req
156. marijuana or something.
Copy !req
157. I didn't know what they
were searching for,
Copy !req
158. to tell you the truth.
Copy !req
159. And I thought
it was a big mistake.
Copy !req
160. One of the first things
we went to was his office.
Copy !req
161. And I remember just as I was
about to pull out a drawer,
Copy !req
162. Mr. Friedman came
rushing in and said,
Copy !req
163. "Wait. I'll get that for you. "
Copy !req
164. And said, "Here.
Copy !req
165. This is all that's there. "
Copy !req
166. And it was one piece of mail
from the Netherlands,
Copy !req
167. but it was child pornography.
Copy !req
168. And he said, "That's it.
Copy !req
169. That's all there is. "
Copy !req
170. And I said, "Well, that's
great, Mr. Friedman,
Copy !req
171. but we're still gonna search. "
Copy !req
172. And he goes, "I don't
understand why you don't go
Copy !req
173. when I tell you
that's all there is?"
Copy !req
174. And I said, "Well,
we don't believe you. "
Copy !req
175. Well, it's not something he
sort of left lying around
Copy !req
176. on the kitchen table.
Copy !req
177. He wasn't proud of it,
and he kept it hidden.
Copy !req
178. He had his office downstairs.
Copy !req
179. It wasn't, like, right there.
Copy !req
180. You had to go downstairs
Copy !req
181. and around the corner
to get to his office.
Copy !req
182. We used to have
someone that cleaned.
Copy !req
183. He says, "Don't let
her clean in here.
Copy !req
184. It's okay. I don't want
my things disturbed. "
Copy !req
185. So all right.
Copy !req
186. I never went in there.
Copy !req
187. Then one of our inspectors
moved the piano
Copy !req
188. that was in that office.
Copy !req
189. And that's where his stash
of magazines were held,
Copy !req
190. behind the piano.
Copy !req
191. And this was Arnold's secret.
Copy !req
192. He liked to look
at pictures of boys.
Copy !req
193. And it's not that he
acted on these things.
Copy !req
194. He just wanted to look at these
pictures and meditate or
Copy !req
195. And these are listings
of the magazines
Copy !req
196. that were found
behind the piano.
Copy !req
197. "Young Boys & Sodomy. "
Copy !req
198. "Incest Case Histories. "
Copy !req
199. Something called
"Chicken Pickin's Magazine. "
Copy !req
200. And in addition to that,
we found evidence
Copy !req
201. of a computer class being
taught there by Mr. Friedman.
Copy !req
202. And we did seize
some list of names
Copy !req
203. that we thought
could be students.
Copy !req
204. I remember walking
in there saying,
Copy !req
205. "Goddamn. We could
have a problem here. "
Copy !req
206. Just when you think everything
is going to be dull,
Copy !req
207. something gets dropped
on your lap, you know,
Copy !req
208. and it turns out to be something
bigger than you ever thought.
Copy !req
209. What happened was one
of the detectives
Copy !req
210. from the vice squad
came in to see me.
Copy !req
211. And he had a list.
Copy !req
212. And it was at that point that
we were able to learn
Copy !req
213. that these were computer
classes that went on
Copy !req
214. literally every day of
the week and Saturday.
Copy !req
215. And we drew a big map of the
whole village of Great Neck
Copy !req
216. sectioned it off, and started
sending detectives out
Copy !req
217. to do interviews.
Copy !req
218. She set us up in teams,
Copy !req
219. male/female teams.
Copy !req
220. And we got a list
of alleged victims.
Copy !req
221. Soon as we went
into the house,
Copy !req
222. we were usually approached
by the mothers.
Copy !req
223. And we explained why we're
there, what we're doing there,
Copy !req
224. and we'd really like to
talk to their children,
Copy !req
225. preferably alone.
Copy !req
226. The parents were
becoming impatient.
Copy !req
227. They wanted something
done immediately.
Copy !req
228. But you always want to be very
careful about how you proceed,
Copy !req
229. because the one thing
that you worry about
Copy !req
230. I know I worried about
it all the time, is
Copy !req
231. just charging somebody
with this kind of a crime
Copy !req
232. is enough to ruin their lives.
Copy !req
233. So you want to make sure that
you have enough evidence
Copy !req
234. and that you're convinced that
you're making a good charge.
Copy !req
235. And how much time was
there between the time
Copy !req
236. the postal inspector
searched the house
Copy !req
237. and the time that you went
in for the second search?
Copy !req
238. Well, it would have been
less than a month,
Copy !req
239. because we did that the day
before Thanksgiving.
Copy !req
240. A prominent middle-aged
teacher
Copy !req
241. in a prosperous
Long Island town
Copy !req
242. is charged with sodomizing young
boys who were his students.
Copy !req
243. Police are charging that
sexual abuse went on
Copy !req
244. behind the doors of
17 Picadilly Road in Great Neck.
Copy !req
245. We rang the doorbell.
Copy !req
246. As soon as he realized who it
was, he wasn't gonna let us in.
Copy !req
247. So one of the detectives
broke the door down.
Copy !req
248. And we went into
the premises at that point.
Copy !req
249. Arnold was by himself.
Copy !req
250. His wife was out shopping.
Copy !req
251. I was out to the store to
buy a Thanksgiving turkey.
Copy !req
252. And I go up the front
walk to the house,
Copy !req
253. and there're people
all over the house.
Copy !req
254. And my husband is sitting,
looking very sheepishly
Copy !req
255. in the dining room, handcuffed.
Copy !req
256. By this time, just about
every news organization
Copy !req
257. you could name had
arrived on the scene.
Copy !req
258. I went home for Thanksgiving.
Copy !req
259. Got to the house, and there's
cops and news trucks
Copy !req
260. all over the place.
Copy !req
261. And
Copy !req
262. I got worried, of course.
Copy !req
263. When David came to the house,
Copy !req
264. we were able to
ascertain eventually
Copy !req
265. the type of business he was in.
Copy !req
266. And we heard that he was
involved in children's
Copy !req
267. entertainment in the form of
some sort of clown activities.
Copy !req
268. I was there when
the clown came in.
Copy !req
269. He was ranting and raving.
Copy !req
270. We had words.
Copy !req
271. And I was going
through the folders.
Copy !req
272. We told him to take a hike.
Copy !req
273. And he kept trying
to come into the house,
Copy !req
274. and I kept telling him
that he couldn't,
Copy !req
275. that he had to leave.
Copy !req
276. He wasn't allowed
while we were searching.
Copy !req
277. And finally, he came in
for the last time.
Copy !req
278. He bent down.
Copy !req
279. I really thought he had
a weapon in that duffle bag.
Copy !req
280. Everybody kind of, you know,
reached for a gun at one point.
Copy !req
281. What he came out with
Copy !req
282. was a pair of Fruit
of the Loom underwear.
Copy !req
283. And he started prancing around,
flailing his arms in the air,
Copy !req
284. saying, "Look at me.
I'm an asshole. "
Copy !req
285. They're harassing my father
for no reason at all.
Copy !req
286. If I had had some kind of
Arabian sand scarf
Copy !req
287. I would have wrapped
that around my face
Copy !req
288. and been Lawrence of Arabia.
Copy !req
289. Maybe that
would have been better.
Copy !req
290. But I took out underwear,
and I put it on my head
Copy !req
291. because I didn't want
to be on camera.
Copy !req
292. The first arrested
was Arnold Friedman,
Copy !req
293. a retired schoolteacher who was
charged with sodomizing boys
Copy !req
294. aged 8 to 11.
Copy !req
295. The charges are that, while
running a computer school,
Copy !req
296. Arnold Friedman and his son
engaged in various forms
Copy !req
297. of sexual abuse
against minor children.
Copy !req
298. Jesse pulls up coming
home from school.
Copy !req
299. His friends dump him
out of the car.
Copy !req
300. David sort of grabbed me,
and we were sitting
Copy !req
301. a couple of houses down,
sort of on the sidewalk.
Copy !req
302. And he was saying
something to me.
Copy !req
303. And then one of the TV
cameras came over,
Copy !req
304. so we kind of ran
to the backyard.
Copy !req
305. And we went behind the house.
Copy !req
306. And we were in the backyard
of our house.
Copy !req
307. And the cops came back, and they
said, "What's going on here?"
Copy !req
308. And I said, "Don't worry about
it. It's just me and Jesse. "
Copy !req
309. And they said,
"Well, we want Jesse.
Copy !req
310. We need Jesse
in the house now. "
Copy !req
311. Of course, we thought,
you know,
Copy !req
312. we didn't know why that was.
Copy !req
313. As we conducted more interviews
of the children,
Copy !req
314. Jesse's name started to pop up.
Copy !req
315. And Jesse was there.
Copy !req
316. What did Jesse do?
Copy !req
317. And then eventually we were
able to ascertain
Copy !req
318. that Jesse's role was not one
of, you know, helping his dad
Copy !req
319. conduct the computer class,
Copy !req
320. but basically abusing
the children himself.
Copy !req
321. We didn't have children
telling us
Copy !req
322. that Arnold had
slapped them around.
Copy !req
323. But quite a number of the kids
reported incidents
Copy !req
324. of being slapped and having
their hair pulled
Copy !req
325. or their arms twisted by Jesse.
Copy !req
326. He was, by far,
the more violent one.
Copy !req
327. All these policemen
said that Jesse
Copy !req
328. was some kind of aggressor.
Copy !req
329. That even his father
was cowering,
Copy !req
330. and Jesse was this sexual,
molesting tyrant.
Copy !req
331. I challenge anyone
to find anyone
Copy !req
332. who Jesse had even teased
as a child or called a name.
Copy !req
333. Jesse was not an angry person.
Copy !req
334. He was not an upset person.
Copy !req
335. So we ended up spending
a lot of time together.
Copy !req
336. I was over his house 3 days
a week, 4 days a week.
Copy !req
337. And as far as I know him,
none of this ever happened,
Copy !req
338. not on my watch.
Copy !req
339. Eighteen-year-old Jesse Friedman
also stands accused
Copy !req
340. of sex abuse and using a child
in a sexual performance.
Copy !req
341. The only thought that I just
kept having the whole night
Copy !req
342. was, "We're gonna get bailed out
and then we'll go home
Copy !req
343. and we'll figure out
what's going on,
Copy !req
344. and the lawyers will
take care of this,
Copy !req
345. and they'll straighten
this out. "
Copy !req
346. Because it was still
just a matter of,
Copy !req
347. "This is a big
misunderstanding. "
Copy !req
348. But when the bail was set
at a million dollars,
Copy !req
349. instead of going out
with Mom and David
Copy !req
350. like we were supposed to,
we went back the other way.
Copy !req
351. And that was the moment when
Copy !req
352. there was this whole new sense
that the problem was
Copy !req
353. much worse than I
originally thought.
Copy !req
354. The investigation didn't
end at that point.
Copy !req
355. That really was the arrest
and the search of the house.
Copy !req
356. And then we went on, because we
had literally, at that point
Copy !req
357. dozens more interviews to do.
Copy !req
358. Somewhere along the way, I think
it was the Nassau County cops,
Copy !req
359. they showed me this magazine,
and they said,
Copy !req
360. "You see?
Look at this magazine. "
Copy !req
361. And they showed me the magazine.
Copy !req
362. They were embarrassed
to show it to me
Copy !req
363. because of what
the pictures were.
Copy !req
364. And you know, I didn't see it.
Copy !req
365. My eyes were in
the right direction,
Copy !req
366. but my brain saw nothing.
Copy !req
367. Because when it was all over,
Copy !req
368. the lawyer showed me
the magazine, and then I saw it.
Copy !req
369. For the first time,
I really saw it.
Copy !req
370. I couldn't
believe what I saw.
Copy !req
371. I mean, I had no concept
that this
Copy !req
372. thing even exists
in the world,
Copy !req
373. that this magazine would
even be in the world.
Copy !req
374. I mean, we had
a middle-class home, educated.
Copy !req
375. I had a good family, right?
Copy !req
376. Where did this come from?
Copy !req
377. Mr. And Mrs. Friedman's house
Copy !req
378. on this most beautiful
Thanksgiving dinner.
Copy !req
379. For my daughter,
for my son-in-law,
Copy !req
380. and for my 3 grandsons.
Copy !req
381. I'm thankful that both my
brothers are home, and
Copy !req
382. I'm most thankful
Copy !req
383. to my husband, to Arnie.
Copy !req
384. Anything you want
to say, Mr. Friedman?
Copy !req
385. Are you guilty?
Copy !req
386. Did you do all they say you did?
Copy !req
387. No comment.
Copy !req
388. I was the first to visit
my brother in prison.
Copy !req
389. And that was a moment in
my life I'll never forget.
Copy !req
390. He came into the room.
Copy !req
391. I was sitting at this
table, a lot of tables,
Copy !req
392. and they were crowded.
Copy !req
393. Just awful surroundings.
Copy !req
394. And he didn't have
his glasses on.
Copy !req
395. Without his glasses,
he was blind as a bat.
Copy !req
396. They'd taken them off and
broken them, stepped on them.
Copy !req
397. He had a smell of urine.
Copy !req
398. They were throwing urine at him.
Copy !req
399. They were threatening to
throw him down the stairs.
Copy !req
400. They knew what
he was in there for.
Copy !req
401. It was all over the media.
Copy !req
402. And he was half-blind and
hadn't shaved in two days
Copy !req
403. and shivering and cold
and scared out of his wits.
Copy !req
404. The first words out
of his mouth were,
Copy !req
405. "Howie, they're gonna kill me.
Get me out of here. "
Copy !req
406. The People versus Arnold
Friedman and Jesse Friedman.
Copy !req
407. Indictment 67430.
Copy !req
408. Step up, please.
Copy !req
409. So began the very first time
cameras were permitted
Copy !req
410. in a Nassau County courtroom.
Copy !req
411. Fifty-six-year-old
Arnold Friedman
Copy !req
412. and his 18-year-old son Jesse
Copy !req
413. heard the court clerk read off
a 91-count indictment
Copy !req
414. charging them with
sodomy and sexual abuse.
Copy !req
415. Arnold Friedman, how do you
plead to this indictment?
Copy !req
416. Guilty or not guilty?
Copy !req
417. Not guilty.
Copy !req
418. And Jesse Friedman, how do you
plead to this indictment?
Copy !req
419. Not guilty.
Copy !req
420. My brother and Jesse kept
saying they're innocent.
Copy !req
421. "This is trumped up charges. "
Copy !req
422. And they got
a McMartin's, you know?
Copy !req
423. They somehow got one kid to,
Copy !req
424. they got the police to be
able to convince the kids,
Copy !req
425. "Well, all of your friends
said something happened.
Copy !req
426. Didn't something happen?
Copy !req
427. Something must have happened,"
et cetera, et cetera.
Copy !req
428. And they were convinced.
Copy !req
429. They kept saying
they were innocent.
Copy !req
430. And I just kept thinking,
Copy !req
431. "I have to believe them. "
Copy !req
432. It's very hard for people to
accept him as a pedophile.
Copy !req
433. Arnold Friedman was
an award-winning teacher.
Copy !req
434. All over the house
were plaques
Copy !req
435. and newspaper articles
written about him.
Copy !req
436. He had been given an award,
"Computer Teacher of the Year. "
Copy !req
437. He also taught piano.
Copy !req
438. David plays beautifully.
Copy !req
439. And his father taught him
how to play the piano.
Copy !req
440. It was when he died
that I realized
Copy !req
441. how much of an impact
he had on my life.
Copy !req
442. Take a bow.
Copy !req
443. He was very supportive of my
magic when I was a kid.
Copy !req
444. When I was about 6, my father
took me to a magic show.
Copy !req
445. And it's probably
my earliest memory.
Copy !req
446. You know when your son goes
to college and you say,
Copy !req
447. "Go to college," and
"What are you going to be?
Copy !req
448. "Be a doctor. Be a lawyer. "
Copy !req
449. I tried to make him into
a doctor or a lawyer.
Copy !req
450. You know, my mom would
always say, you know,
Copy !req
451. "Get a job. Get a job. "
Copy !req
452. But my dad would say to me,
"You know, David,
Copy !req
453. I can't tell you what to do,
because you know what I did
Copy !req
454. when I got out of college. "
Copy !req
455. He blew off his chemical
engineering degree,
Copy !req
456. which he could have worked
for an oil company
Copy !req
457. and made tons of money.
Copy !req
458. Instead, he played
in the mountains,
Copy !req
459. which is a total blow-off,
follow your dream,
Copy !req
460. artistic thing.
Copy !req
461. And I totally love him for that.
Copy !req
462. Trust your children to somebody
who was a schoolteacher
Copy !req
463. for over 20, 30 years,
a member of your community.
Copy !req
464. All you heard were accolades
about this person,
Copy !req
465. and now all of a sudden,
he's a monster.
Copy !req
466. And things that were
being said,
Copy !req
467. you know, upset the community,
Copy !req
468. because you don't
expect that here.
Copy !req
469. Great Neck is a peninsula.
Copy !req
470. It's a very insulated community.
Copy !req
471. This was a certain kind of
person that lived in Great Neck.
Copy !req
472. It's on the North Shore
of Long Island,
Copy !req
473. which is usually a
predominately wealthy area.
Copy !req
474. These are wealthy,
professional people
Copy !req
475. that have garnered a great deal
of income in their lives,
Copy !req
476. and they live accordingly.
Copy !req
477. Nice community.
Copy !req
478. Tight.
Copy !req
479. Affluent.
Copy !req
480. Well-kept homes.
Copy !req
481. They get dressed up
to go shopping.
Copy !req
482. They want to be sure
they get seen by
Copy !req
483. the people they want to see,
Copy !req
484. and cars are important,
Copy !req
485. clothes are important.
Copy !req
486. There's a lot of
competition in Great Neck.
Copy !req
487. Everybody's kid's
a genius and the best,
Copy !req
488. and everybody's the best
in this and that,
Copy !req
489. and you just want your
kid to be happy
Copy !req
490. and to get an array
of experiences.
Copy !req
491. And this computer class was
one of those experiences.
Copy !req
492. You thought
you were doing right.
Copy !req
493. Most of the children
started out explaining
Copy !req
494. how Mr. Friedman would try
to test them, I think,
Copy !req
495. in my opinion, as to whether
they'd be receptive
Copy !req
496. to some of his advances.
Copy !req
497. There'd be certain showings
on the computer
Copy !req
498. during computer class
of certain material
Copy !req
499. that was inappropriate
for children.
Copy !req
500. If you were going to be
the first one abused
Copy !req
501. on a particular day,
Copy !req
502. he would pull up a chair
and sit next to you.
Copy !req
503. Maybe it would start with his
arm around your shoulder
Copy !req
504. or on your leg and
gradually move it up,
Copy !req
505. touching private parts.
Copy !req
506. And then over the course of time
we developed a situation
Copy !req
507. where we found out that there
was not only sexual touching
Copy !req
508. of the genitals, but there
were acts of sodomy,
Copy !req
509. oral and anal sodomy,
Copy !req
510. that took place during
the course of the class.
Copy !req
511. So were the kids abused
in the computer room
Copy !req
512. in view of everyone else?
Copy !req
513. From what I saw
in my sessions,
Copy !req
514. none were raped
out on the floor.
Copy !req
515. The kids were raped in Jesse's
room or the bathroom.
Copy !req
516. Just to change the subject
for a second,
Copy !req
517. there were these sexual
computer games
Copy !req
518. that were discussed during
the course of the case.
Copy !req
519. We'd basically do
the games where
Copy !req
520. there would be naked girls
and everything
Copy !req
521. in the computer class.
Copy !req
522. But I remember one time I
slipped one of the games out,
Copy !req
523. and I brought it home
and everything,
Copy !req
524. and I copied it,
and Arnold found out.
Copy !req
525. Because of that, I was raped
Copy !req
526. by him and Jesse at the same
time, as punishment to that.
Copy !req
527. I never did it again.
Copy !req
528. He made me format it.
I formatted it.
Copy !req
529. I had to bring my computer
in and show him
Copy !req
530. that I hadn't brought it home.
Copy !req
531. So he was absolutely positive,
100%, that it was not
Copy !req
532. touched at all in any way,
form, shape whatsoever.
Copy !req
533. And how did he know that
you brought it home?
Copy !req
534. He accounted for
all the disks that were there.
Copy !req
535. And since he flipped
through, he's like,
Copy !req
536. "Who the fuck took this? Tell me
now, or I'm gonna kill you all!"
Copy !req
537. And he had a knife, and he
was waving a knife around.
Copy !req
538. I was like, "I did it!"
Copy !req
539. My general recollection
of the classes
Copy !req
540. is basically a positive one,
is a pleasant one.
Copy !req
541. The types of behaviors
which were described,
Copy !req
542. which were, well, just
downright satanic in nature.
Copy !req
543. I mean, they make him sound like
some kind of brutal sadist,
Copy !req
544. whereas, you know, I had just
always thought of him
Copy !req
545. as being kind of a nebbish.
Copy !req
546. I think, as someone
who took the classes,
Copy !req
547. it was just hard to picture
even that going on,
Copy !req
548. because I did have
a good experience.
Copy !req
549. And I didn't, you know,
see anything, you know,
Copy !req
550. remotely like,
Copy !req
551. you know, like child
molestation
Copy !req
552. or child abuse or any
child anything going on.
Copy !req
553. What took place in
Arnold's classes
Copy !req
554. was pretty much just
straight computer lessons.
Copy !req
555. I mean, as ordinary
and as boring
Copy !req
556. as you could
possibly imagine it.
Copy !req
557. It was just generally
a free-for-all.
Copy !req
558. Everybody could see
what was going on,
Copy !req
559. and very often they
would participate
Copy !req
560. in these sort of mass games
in the classroom.
Copy !req
561. There was a game there
that was called "Leapfrog. "
Copy !req
562. And this one really got to me.
Copy !req
563. They would play
leapfrog in the class.
Copy !req
564. They'd actually have
their clothes off.
Copy !req
565. And we associate leapfrog like
you do when you were a kid,
Copy !req
566. one guy jumping over another
guy, but the fact is
Copy !req
567. it means everybody's butt's
up in the air, so to speak.
Copy !req
568. The very nature of these
charges is so absurd.
Copy !req
569. It seems almost like some
kind of grotesque fantasy.
Copy !req
570. Yeah. Leapfrog.
Copy !req
571. I remember about that.
Copy !req
572. It's kind of like Twister,
where we would have to sit down.
Copy !req
573. Our asses would be in the air.
Copy !req
574. Arnold and Jesse would leap
from one person to another,
Copy !req
575. sticking their dick
each in our ass.
Copy !req
576. But then I was confused,
because you said that
Copy !req
577. no kids were raped
in the computer room.
Copy !req
578. The leapfrog game, which
was not molestation,
Copy !req
579. was a leapfrog game, was not
considered molestation,
Copy !req
580. was done outside.
Copy !req
581. But that was a group game.
Copy !req
582. The actual molestation,
one-on-one contact,
Copy !req
583. happened in the bathroom.
Copy !req
584. The game happened
out on the floor.
Copy !req
585. One of the things,
you sit down there,
Copy !req
586. and I know I, you know, think
about this, and you know,
Copy !req
587. "How could this go on
in this home for so long
Copy !req
588. and not be,
you know, come out?"
Copy !req
589. But, you know,
that wasn't my province.
Copy !req
590. That wasn't what I had to decide
or the judge had to decide.
Copy !req
591. You know, that's up to someone
else to decide that.
Copy !req
592. But if I recall, you know,
the children were
Copy !req
593. pretty vivid in their
recollections
Copy !req
594. as to what Arnold
and/or Jesse did to them.
Copy !req
595. And Judge Boklan,
she's you know,
Copy !req
596. a pretty strong-willed judge.
Copy !req
597. And she's pretty unmovable
when she makes her decision.
Copy !req
598. There was never a doubt in
my mind as to their guilt.
Copy !req
599. And remember, I'd been
around for a while.
Copy !req
600. This wasn't, you know, the first
sex case that I had ever seen.
Copy !req
601. In fact, my previous law
secretary used to tease me
Copy !req
602. that we were the pervert part.
Copy !req
603. And having been, you know, head
of the Sex Crimes Unit myself,
Copy !req
604. where, you know, I had young
boys who were sodomized,
Copy !req
605. in fact, one who
killed himself
Copy !req
606. you know, after the sentence
of the abuser.
Copy !req
607. I mean, some horrible
experiences.
Copy !req
608. So for me to be so outraged,
Copy !req
609. I mean, this was really
very, very bad
Copy !req
610. what was going on there.
Copy !req
611. It was like someone's
worst nightmare.
Copy !req
612. Who would even think
of doing these things?
Copy !req
613. And to do them in a group
and with so many witnesses.
Copy !req
614. The scenario, as posted by
the media and the police
Copy !req
615. was so incredibly way out,
Copy !req
616. it was hard for me to
believe that it was true.
Copy !req
617. We now welcome, also in
Los Angeles, Debbie Nathan.
Copy !req
618. Debbie is an investigative
freelance journalist,
Copy !req
619. who has been covering
the McMartin and other
Copy !req
620. abuse trials around the country.
Copy !req
621. All these parents
are bizarro, huh?
Copy !req
622. They're all whacked?
Copy !req
623. Well, it's not really fair,
I don't think
Copy !req
624. to deal simply with
these parents
Copy !req
625. or with this particular case.
Copy !req
626. You have to understand that
all over the country
Copy !req
627. there is a hysteria.
Copy !req
628. And I don't think that
it's a question
Copy !req
629. with most of these
kids of lying.
Copy !req
630. I think that they have been
brainwashed, if you will.
Copy !req
631. I was one of the first writers
for the mass media
Copy !req
632. to look at those cases
critically and question them.
Copy !req
633. So as a result of that, having
done a lot of that work,
Copy !req
634. I got a lot of letters
from people.
Copy !req
635. And my father wrote to Debbie
and said, I don't know,
Copy !req
636. said, "Help me. "
Copy !req
637. And she has been the only
person outside the family
Copy !req
638. that said, "I believe you. "
Copy !req
639. In the Friedman case,
Copy !req
640. the basic charges were
completely implausible.
Copy !req
641. First of all, you'd have
to believe that blood
Copy !req
642. is coming out of these
children's orifices,
Copy !req
643. that they're screaming,
Copy !req
644. that they're crying,
Copy !req
645. that their clothes are soiled
from semen and from blood.
Copy !req
646. And yet their parents show up.
Copy !req
647. Sometimes they show up
unannounced.
Copy !req
648. Everything looks fine.
Copy !req
649. Was there any physical evidence
in the case that was relevant?
Copy !req
650. Or it was the case
really strictly based on
Copy !req
651. the statements of the kids?
Copy !req
652. It was more testimony.
Copy !req
653. There was a dearth
of physical evidence.
Copy !req
654. I don't even recall
whether there was
Copy !req
655. any physical evidence that
would have indicated
Copy !req
656. one way or another that
these events took place.
Copy !req
657. I don't think that they're
sitting around with any kind
Copy !req
658. of diabolical or
conspiratorial agenda
Copy !req
659. to go out and falsely
accuse Arnold Friedman
Copy !req
660. or railroad Jesse Friedman.
Copy !req
661. But nobody's critiquing them.
Copy !req
662. Nobody's telling them that
there's a right way
Copy !req
663. and a wrong way to do this.
Copy !req
664. Nobody's saying that we've got
a problem in this culture
Copy !req
665. with hysteria around this issue.
Copy !req
666. And so they're really free
to let their fantasies fly.
Copy !req
667. I think the most
overwhelming thing was
Copy !req
668. the enormous amount
of child pornography.
Copy !req
669. You would just have to walk
into the living room,
Copy !req
670. and it'd be piled
around the piano.
Copy !req
671. There were literally foot-high
stacks of pornography,
Copy !req
672. in plain view,
all around the house.
Copy !req
673. But photos taken
during the search
Copy !req
674. showed nothing of the kind.
Copy !req
675. But as far as the families were
concerned, I don't want to
Copy !req
676. use the word that they were
competitive with each other.
Copy !req
677. I don't know if it's
to that extent.
Copy !req
678. You know, sometimes it'd be some
idle conversation about,
Copy !req
679. you know, another boy, you know,
"He was sodomized 5 times,
Copy !req
680. but my son was sodomized
6 times," you know,
Copy !req
681. as if that meant something in
the overall scheme of things.
Copy !req
682. There's a whole community
atmosphere that gets created
Copy !req
683. in a mass-abuse case
like this,
Copy !req
684. where the families are
talking to each other,
Copy !req
685. they're going to
community meetings,
Copy !req
686. or they're calling on
the phone all the time.
Copy !req
687. They're seeing each other
in group therapy.
Copy !req
688. And there is definitely
an element when a community
Copy !req
689. defines itself as
a victimized community,
Copy !req
690. that if you're not victimized
Copy !req
691. you don't fit into
that community.
Copy !req
692. The families that had
their child molested
Copy !req
693. or allegedly molested
became very involved
Copy !req
694. and took a greater part
of their life at that point.
Copy !req
695. I appreciated their call
in the beginning
Copy !req
696. telling me what happened.
Copy !req
697. And then when I told them
that we looked into it
Copy !req
698. and my wife and I both felt that
nothing happened to our son,
Copy !req
699. it got to be a little pushy
situation where they told us
Copy !req
700. that we were in denial, and it
absolutely happened to our son.
Copy !req
701. You fucking bitch!
Copy !req
702. I'm gonna kill you!
Copy !req
703. When Jesse gets out of jail,
he's a dead motherfucker.
Copy !req
704. When Arnold gets out of jail,
he's a dead motherfucker.
Copy !req
705. Fuck you! I'll fuck
your whole family!
Copy !req
706. Is there any one word or
phrase that you could use
Copy !req
707. to describe that
experience overall?
Copy !req
708. Chaos. Hysteria.
Copy !req
709. It was really crazy.
Copy !req
710. Am I dreaming?
Copy !req
711. Is this a nightmare?
Copy !req
712. This can't be happening
to my family.
Copy !req
713. My brother?
Copy !req
714. And a day doesn't go by
that I don't think of it.
Copy !req
715. It destroyed my family.
Copy !req
716. It tore us apart.
Copy !req
717. I don't know.
Copy !req
718. I can't say too much about it.
Copy !req
719. We were a family.
Copy !req
720. Mommy believes you did it
Copy !req
721. and she believes you
should go to jail,
Copy !req
722. and she believes that she
deserves everything
Copy !req
723. that's left and you shouldn't
have any part of it.
Copy !req
724. You have to hire
another lawyer?
Copy !req
725. All this woman does
is hire lawyers.
Copy !req
726. I honestly have to tell you,
anything that she decides
Copy !req
727. I can't trust.
Copy !req
728. She runs around, "Arnie,
they don't trust me. "
Copy !req
729. Well, we don't trust her.
Copy !req
730. We lived with her for 3, for 2
months while you were in jail,
Copy !req
731. and we learned not to trust her.
Copy !req
732. David had just gotten a video
camera when this case broke,
Copy !req
733. and so he just started recording
the family falling apart.
Copy !req
734. And Mommy believes them,
and I don't.
Copy !req
735. I tell them to get lost,
Copy !req
736. and Mommy says, "You're right. "
Copy !req
737. And "I've lived with him
for all my life. "
Copy !req
738. And "Look at all these horrible
things he's done for me
Copy !req
739. over 30 years," which
amounts to nothing,
Copy !req
740. except this.
Copy !req
741. At some point, David
making the videotapes
Copy !req
742. kind of springboarded to my
thoughts about audiotape.
Copy !req
743. And I began to make
audio recordings
Copy !req
744. of these family arguments.
Copy !req
745. Don't scream.
Copy !req
746. The family was screaming
at each other.
Copy !req
747. And everyone wanted me
to say, "He didn't do it. "
Copy !req
748. Well, I wouldn't do that.
Copy !req
749. I said, "I don't know. "
Copy !req
750. They wanted me
just to lie, you know,
Copy !req
751. and say, "He didn't do it,"
whether I believed it or not.
Copy !req
752. And I was so angry at Arnold
and what he'd done
Copy !req
753. that I wouldn't do it, and I
said, "Well, I don't know. "
Copy !req
754. And I wanted just
to tell the truth.
Copy !req
755. That is the truth.
I didn't know.
Copy !req
756. My mother abandoned
him, pretty much,
Copy !req
757. wouldn't talk to him, fought
with him constantly,
Copy !req
758. made him sleep on the sofa.
Copy !req
759. And after 33 years of
marriage, when your wife,
Copy !req
760. when you've been accused of
a crime you didn't commit,
Copy !req
761. you spend 6 weeks in
jail for it,
Copy !req
762. you're trying to build
a defense,
Copy !req
763. and your wife leaves you,
essentially,
Copy !req
764. my father fell apart.
Copy !req
765. You yelled and screamed about
what, that you ruined her life.
Copy !req
766. She's brainwashed you.
You didn't do anything.
Copy !req
767. The police have done it to you.
Copy !req
768. It's not your fault.
Copy !req
769. The police are
railroading you.
Copy !req
770. But it's not your fault.
Copy !req
771. Mommy doesn't believe you.
Copy !req
772. The police picked on you,
Copy !req
773. and that's who
they're going after.
Copy !req
774. It's not because
you deserved it.
Copy !req
775. You're taking the blame,
and you don't deserve the blame.
Copy !req
776. She's brainwashing you into
thinking that it's your fault,
Copy !req
777. and it's not your fault.
Copy !req
778. She thinks he did it.
Copy !req
779. And if he did it,
then she thinks
Copy !req
780. he's going to be
convicted of it.
Copy !req
781. And if he's convicted of it,
he's going to go away.
Copy !req
782. Yeah, but if, let's say he
goes away for 10 years.
Copy !req
783. He's still gonna come out.
Copy !req
784. No, I'm talking about 50 years.
I'm talking about 100 years.
Copy !req
785. She doesn't think
he's getting 50 years.
Copy !req
786. I don't think she thinks that
he's going to get 50 years.
Copy !req
787. OK, so what is he gonna get?
Twenty years?
Copy !req
788. That's 50 years.
Copy !req
789. What's the difference, well,
Copy !req
790. If he goes to a state
institution on state charges,
Copy !req
791. you know he's not coming back.
Copy !req
792. In this case, there was
consultations
Copy !req
793. between both sides, the District
Attorney's Office,
Copy !req
794. the families,
the defense attorneys,
Copy !req
795. as to what to do with
Arnold Friedman.
Copy !req
796. We were trying to maintain
a sense of normalcy
Copy !req
797. in terms of having dinner
and paying the bills,
Copy !req
798. but it was almost surreal.
Copy !req
799. I mean, I don't think
any of us had any notion
Copy !req
800. of what was going on
or what we were doing
Copy !req
801. or where any of this
was leading.
Copy !req
802. Sir, would you like to
comment on the situation?
Copy !req
803. Yes, I think this is a kitchen.
Copy !req
804. I thought it was only
going to last a year
Copy !req
805. and that we would look back
and laugh about how
Copy !req
806. crazy we were and how we didn't
know what we were doing
Copy !req
807. and just sort of laugh.
Copy !req
808. What do you want?
My nose? My teeth?
Copy !req
809. Wait a minute. There it is.
Copy !req
810. - There's your nose.
- Oh that's great.
Copy !req
811. I feel like I'm
being dissected here.
Copy !req
812. And here's Mommy and Daddy
Copy !req
813. in a rare moment of affection.
Copy !req
814. What's the matter?
Copy !req
815. - Why?
- Why?
Copy !req
816. Why not?
Copy !req
817. That's not all.
Copy !req
818. You've gotten other things.
Copy !req
819. Lately but not all.
Copy !req
820. You're the one
Copy !req
821. Who's stolen
my heart, dear
Copy !req
822. I think I was the first woman
that he ever really dated.
Copy !req
823. And he was very reluctant
to get married.
Copy !req
824. I sort of said, "We've got
to do this," you know.
Copy !req
825. I could be very
Copy !req
826. So he says, "Well, all right. "
Copy !req
827. Big mistake.
Copy !req
828. We were delighted.
Copy !req
829. She was effervescent, pretty.
Copy !req
830. They seemed to be
very much in love.
Copy !req
831. They seemed to be
very compatible.
Copy !req
832. It had been a long
time in coming.
Copy !req
833. My mother, "You're my oldest!
Copy !req
834. Get married! I want
a grandchild," you know.
Copy !req
835. My mother is sexually ignorant.
Copy !req
836. As far as I'm concerned, she had
sex, I mean everyone thinks
Copy !req
837. their parents only
had sex 3 times,
Copy !req
838. you know for each
of their siblings.
Copy !req
839. But with my mother,
I think it was true.
Copy !req
840. And it was like, you know,
you read in a book
Copy !req
841. how do you have sex,
and you start here,
Copy !req
842. and then you do step 1,
step 2, step 3.
Copy !req
843. And that's somewhat like what
sex was like with Arnold,
Copy !req
844. Because I used to say to him,
Copy !req
845. "It's called foreplay.
Copy !req
846. It's supposed to be play.
Copy !req
847. It's supposed to be fun. "
Copy !req
848. And he treated it like work.
Copy !req
849. Like this is what you're
supposed to do when you do it,
Copy !req
850. like washing the dishes.
Copy !req
851. If he was so much in the closet
and not living with her
Copy !req
852. and not attracted,
where was she for 30 years?
Copy !req
853. Why didn't she say, "Honey,
you're not having sex with me.
Copy !req
854. I think I want a divorce. "
Copy !req
855. Where was she?
Copy !req
856. I don't think that's the case.
Copy !req
857. Either they're
both crazy,
Copy !req
858. which is a possibility,
Copy !req
859. or
Copy !req
860. or he was perfectly normal,
Copy !req
861. based according to, you
know, by her standards.
Copy !req
862. You're the one for me
Copy !req
863. It was a difficult marriage
because of Elaine.
Copy !req
864. She had her problems, and it
took a monumental amount
Copy !req
865. of patience and love
and caring to handle it.
Copy !req
866. It wasn't easy for him.
Copy !req
867. It wasn't easy for the kids.
Copy !req
868. But they were able
to live with it.
Copy !req
869. She was the best mother
she knew how.
Copy !req
870. She loved her kids,
and she loved her husband.
Copy !req
871. She wasn't the warmest,
Copy !req
872. most outgoing human being
in the world.
Copy !req
873. When I had the first child,
I was just ecstatic,
Copy !req
874. but I didn't know
how to do it.
Copy !req
875. And I wasn't the most
Copy !req
876. well-balanced person myself.
Copy !req
877. You know, we all have
hang-ups, and
Copy !req
878. that's my hang-up.
Copy !req
879. Good things can never
happen to me, only bad.
Copy !req
880. That's all the snapshots.
Copy !req
881. I know.
Copy !req
882. This whole thing is
all the snapshots.
Copy !req
883. Did they go and they
looked through each one?
Copy !req
884. They must have.
Copy !req
885. This is ancient film.
Copy !req
886. Holy shit.
Copy !req
887. - Dad, what is it?
- Oh, my God, it's amazing.
Copy !req
888. How did you get this?
This is great.
Copy !req
889. - This is my Dad's.
- Who took it?
Copy !req
890. My father.
Copy !req
891. Dad, what's that a film of?
Copy !req
892. This is a film of my sister.
Copy !req
893. I had a sister.
Copy !req
894. She died a year
before I was born.
Copy !req
895. My brother knew her when
he was young, of course.
Copy !req
896. And she died of blood poisoning.
Copy !req
897. It was a horrible,
terrible, sudden death.
Copy !req
898. And it destroyed the family.
Copy !req
899. Arnold's parents divorced.
Copy !req
900. So Arnold's mother
had these two boys,
Copy !req
901. and they were really on
welfare. I don't know.
Copy !req
902. They lived in
a basement apartment.
Copy !req
903. Evidently, there
was one bedroom,
Copy !req
904. and the boys slept in
the bedroom with the mother.
Copy !req
905. We shared, all 3 of us,
not in the same bed,
Copy !req
906. but we all shared
the same room, big rooms.
Copy !req
907. And rather than put a,
apparently
Copy !req
908. the living room
was the living room,
Copy !req
909. and then there was
the kitchen,
Copy !req
910. so we put all the beds
in the one room.
Copy !req
911. And that she dated a lot of men
and would bring the men
Copy !req
912. into the apartment, and they
would have sex in the bed
Copy !req
913. while Arnold was
there listening.
Copy !req
914. And Arnold said that,
because he saw his mother
Copy !req
915. in bed with a man, that
when he was adolescent,
Copy !req
916. he was experimenting,
as all children do,
Copy !req
917. and he had sex with his brother
in bed or something like that.
Copy !req
918. And to me,
Copy !req
919. that's not what all children do.
Copy !req
920. Arnold sent me this right around
when he started writing me,
Copy !req
921. and it's called "My Story,"
and it was written in 1988.
Copy !req
922. And I think it was his attempt
to talk about the case
Copy !req
923. but also talk about the case
in the context of his life.
Copy !req
924. And it starts out, it says,
Copy !req
925. "This story goes back 50 years
to when I was a child. "
Copy !req
926. He says, "When I
reached adolescence
Copy !req
927. I sought out partners for
my emerging sexuality.
Copy !req
928. My first partner, when I was
13, was my 8-year-old brother.
Copy !req
929. I had overt sexual
relations with him
Copy !req
930. over a period of a few years. "
Copy !req
931. I know that my brother has said
that he messed around with me
Copy !req
932. when I was a kid.
Copy !req
933. And I don't remember any of it.
Copy !req
934. I don't remember anything.
Copy !req
935. I have nothing up here
Copy !req
936. that has me yelling or
screaming or crying
Copy !req
937. or trying to get away
or unhappy or I
Copy !req
938. there's nothing there that.
Copy !req
939. Maybe someday a door
will open,
Copy !req
940. but it better hurry up,
because I'm 65.
Copy !req
941. And at this point in time,
I could care less.
Copy !req
942. Then he goes on and says,
"My next partners were boys
Copy !req
943. my own age, all of which
sexual relations,
Copy !req
944. probably being within
norms for my age.
Copy !req
945. However, the emotional
impact of these relations
Copy !req
946. was very pronounced and
lasted through my adult life.
Copy !req
947. A more normal situation,
as probably happened
Copy !req
948. with my partners, would
have been to outgrow
Copy !req
949. and forget these episodes.
Copy !req
950. However, I literally fell
in love with these boys,
Copy !req
951. and the relations were far
more significant to me
Copy !req
952. than they were to my partners. "
Copy !req
953. And then he told me that when he
got to be an older teenager,
Copy !req
954. like maybe in his late teens,
he started worrying
Copy !req
955. that he was still attracted to
kids that were the same age
Copy !req
956. as his brother had been
when Arnold was 13,
Copy !req
957. and that really started
bothering him.
Copy !req
958. And then after he had his own
children, he was worried.
Copy !req
959. He started worrying that
maybe he would molest
Copy !req
960. his own children.
Copy !req
961. And at that point,
he went to therapy,
Copy !req
962. and the therapist told him,
"No, don't worry.
Copy !req
963. You've got everything
under control. "
Copy !req
964. The Jazzbo Mambo
with the boogie beat
Copy !req
965. is the newest dance
on 52nd Street
Copy !req
966. All the cats come running
from both near and far
Copy !req
967. to do the Jazzbo Mambo
8 to the bar
Copy !req
968. Come on, Light Fingers!
Copy !req
969. Light Fingers, come on!
Copy !req
970. Jazzbo Mambo
Copy !req
971. Jazzbo Mambo
Copy !req
972. Jazzbo Mambo,
8 to the bar
Copy !req
973. You could see that
this wasn't exactly
Copy !req
974. Fred MacMurray and
"My Three Sons," right?
Copy !req
975. It always struck us as being
Copy !req
976. a very dysfunctional
family, obviously.
Copy !req
977. And we'd have to,
Copy !req
978. you would have to wonder,
wouldn't you,
Copy !req
979. what kind of a family
situation you would have
Copy !req
980. that could produce
this kind of crime.
Copy !req
981. What might it be like to grow up
in a household like this?
Copy !req
982. I don't know.
I can't even imagine.
Copy !req
983. Today is September 14, 1975.
Copy !req
984. We just concluded a tour
of Jungle Safari.
Copy !req
985. Jungle Habitat.
Copy !req
986. Jungle Habitat in
West Milford, New Jersey.
Copy !req
987. Here are my 3 brothers.
Copy !req
988. Two brothers, you dummy.
Copy !req
989. All right, there are 3 children.
Copy !req
990. What happened was the 3
sons were like a gang.
Copy !req
991. Like, "This is our gang
Copy !req
992. and Mom. "
Copy !req
993. "She's not part of our gang. "
Copy !req
994. And we have, of course,
Copy !req
995. A pterodactyl.
Copy !req
996. A Jewish pterodactyl.
Copy !req
997. Shmuck, shmuck, schmuck.
Copy !req
998. The 4 of us got along so well.
Copy !req
999. We had a very similar
kind of sense of humor.
Copy !req
1000. You know, one guy would say
something, and then it would,
Copy !req
1001. then the next person
would add to the joke.
Copy !req
1002. And my mother, who has
no sense of humor,
Copy !req
1003. and she just didn't
get that part of us.
Copy !req
1004. And she resented that.
Copy !req
1005. When this whole thing blew
apart, the men got together,
Copy !req
1006. and Arnold confided in them.
Copy !req
1007. And me?
Copy !req
1008. And I was a loyal wife.
Copy !req
1009. People told me, "Oh, why
don't you leave him?
Copy !req
1010. He's a horrible person.
Copy !req
1011. Just walk out and leave him. "
Copy !req
1012. And I didn't.
Copy !req
1013. I went all over town.
Copy !req
1014. I raised money for bail.
Copy !req
1015. I called every relative I knew.
Copy !req
1016. I begged.
Copy !req
1017. And I did all this
for him, right?
Copy !req
1018. He was my husband. I loved him.
Copy !req
1019. And no one said,
"What do you want?" to me.
Copy !req
1020. OK.
Copy !req
1021. OK, I think we can eat now.
Copy !req
1022. So you're saying
what we have is
Copy !req
1023. the people who we thought
would testify
Copy !req
1024. and say that nothing happened.
Copy !req
1025. And we are afraid to put them
on the witness stand,
Copy !req
1026. even though we know
that nothing happened.
Copy !req
1027. We think they will say
something happened.
Copy !req
1028. The Friedmans suggested that
we speak to various people
Copy !req
1029. who may have been present
at the time.
Copy !req
1030. And some of those people weren't
alleged victims at all.
Copy !req
1031. And that the hope was that one
or more of these people
Copy !req
1032. would say,
"This is just not true. "
Copy !req
1033. But that just didn't happen.
Copy !req
1034. As far as I'm concerned
he's being, he's
Copy !req
1035. So then nothing happened.
Copy !req
1036. We begged him to tell us
that something happened,
Copy !req
1037. to explain how this whole mess
could have happened.
Copy !req
1038. That's the only way to explain
how it could have happened
Copy !req
1039. other then the fact that the
police are out of their minds.
Copy !req
1040. We begged him.
He told us nothing happened.
Copy !req
1041. That's good enough for me.
Nothing happened.
Copy !req
1042. If my father had the ability
to confess to me,
Copy !req
1043. yeah, he had done
something one time,
Copy !req
1044. and that's how this whole crazy
mess got started,
Copy !req
1045. it would make a lot more sense.
Copy !req
1046. Not that I wanted that
to be the case, but
Copy !req
1047. you have to find a way
to explain the unexplainable.
Copy !req
1048. Oh, my gosh.
Copy !req
1049. Oh, look at that.
Copy !req
1050. Happy Birthday to you
Copy !req
1051. Happy Birthday to you
Copy !req
1052. Is that a real ice cream?
Copy !req
1053. That's what's so odd about it.
Copy !req
1054. They had this idealized image
Copy !req
1055. of this father as being this
saint-like person
Copy !req
1056. this Santa Claus,
Messiah, you know.
Copy !req
1057. And professionals
in the field say that
Copy !req
1058. oh, they have this idea
that children identify
Copy !req
1059. with the abusive parent.
Copy !req
1060. When I was about a year or two,
my parents separated.
Copy !req
1061. And what did I do?
Copy !req
1062. "My father is wonderful.
Copy !req
1063. My mother is terrible. "
Copy !req
1064. The truth is
my father was a rat
Copy !req
1065. just like David's father.
Copy !req
1066. My father walked out.
Copy !req
1067. This is not wonderful.
Copy !req
1068. This is being a rat.
Copy !req
1069. My mother was a nag.
Copy !req
1070. Well, I mean, this is true
Copy !req
1071. but look, she stayed with me,
she took care of me.
Copy !req
1072. So people's visions
are distorted.
Copy !req
1073. I never felt angry at my dad.
Copy !req
1074. My dad had nothing
to do with this.
Copy !req
1075. Someone knocks on the door
Copy !req
1076. and accuses you for a crime
you didn't commit
Copy !req
1077. you gotta attack
Copy !req
1078. attack your attackers
and do what you can.
Copy !req
1079. And that's all it was.
Copy !req
1080. It had nothing to do with
Copy !req
1081. there was nothing else
that was involved at all.
Copy !req
1082. We were talking about
honoring and respecting.
Copy !req
1083. Yeah, but, yeah,
talk about honor and
Copy !req
1084. do you honor and respect
your husband?
Copy !req
1085. That's why
I don't talk to you.
Copy !req
1086. I said I did honor
and respect my husband.
Copy !req
1087. Oh, Okay.
Copy !req
1088. But you don't like
that answer.
Copy !req
1089. No I don't.
I don't believe it, no.
Copy !req
1090. Ask your father.
Copy !req
1091. Do I honor and respect you?
Copy !req
1092. Do you object to my handling
Copy !req
1093. do you have any objection
in my relationship with you?
Copy !req
1094. Do you like it
when she calls you slime?
Copy !req
1095. She did.
Copy !req
1096. Did you like it
when she did?
Copy !req
1097. OK.
Copy !req
1098. Did you like it when
Copy !req
1099. The other cases that
I've written about
Copy !req
1100. those families
have been much stronger.
Copy !req
1101. First of all,
they've started from
Copy !req
1102. a monolithic feeling
of innocence
Copy !req
1103. which didn't exist
in this family
Copy !req
1104. because of Arnold's pedophilia.
Copy !req
1105. And they just buckled down
Copy !req
1106. and everybody gets behind
the defendant
Copy !req
1107. the accused family member.
Copy !req
1108. People quit their jobs.
Copy !req
1109. And, you know
Copy !req
1110. people were all sitting around
the kitchen table
Copy !req
1111. for the next 3 years with
staplers and Xerox machines
Copy !req
1112. and they're working on
the defense.
Copy !req
1113. And then when the defendant
is convicted
Copy !req
1114. they're working on the appeal
Copy !req
1115. and all family conflict
is submerged.
Copy !req
1116. Why don't you try once
to be supportive of me?
Copy !req
1117. Well, I'll tell you why.
Copy !req
1118. Because we all started at
the beginning of this thing
Copy !req
1119. and I
Copy !req
1120. Well let's start
from right now.
Copy !req
1121. OK, let's start
from right now.
Copy !req
1122. All right, let's start
from right now.
Copy !req
1123. We'll all start brand new.
Copy !req
1124. We have a decision making
process on the table.
Copy !req
1125. Great.
Copy !req
1126. All the past mistakes,
they were mistakes.
Copy !req
1127. We're not gonna hold them
against anyone.
Copy !req
1128. Great, great.
Copy !req
1129. Now we're starting afresh.
Copy !req
1130. Stop. Lower your voice,
and talk nicely to your sons.
Copy !req
1131. Alright, now we're gonna do it,
starting now.
Copy !req
1132. Seth, why don't you call me?
Copy !req
1133. Do I bawl you out?
Copy !req
1134. Seth is
Copy !req
1135. against me
Copy !req
1136. and she can't hold it
against me.
Copy !req
1137. Well, now it's time
to call it
Copy !req
1138. 'cause Mommy's sad
and stuff.
Copy !req
1139. I think there
was a recognition
Copy !req
1140. that Arnold's case was becoming
increasingly hopeless
Copy !req
1141. because of the child
pornography problem
Copy !req
1142. because of other people
coming out of the woodwork.
Copy !req
1143. So the strategy evolved to
Copy !req
1144. "What can we do to save Jesse?"
Copy !req
1145. Jesse's lawyer
very eloquently said to us
Copy !req
1146. "If there's a rowboat
and it's sinking
Copy !req
1147. and the rowboat
is tied to a rock
Copy !req
1148. you have to disconnect
the rowboat from the rock
Copy !req
1149. and save the rowboat
Copy !req
1150. even though the rock
is sinking"
Copy !req
1151. Meaning you had to separate
Arnold from Jesse.
Copy !req
1152. And Arnold was going to plead
Copy !req
1153. and Jesse would
in some way benefit.
Copy !req
1154. I was sitting there
potentially going to trial
Copy !req
1155. with no pornographic magazines
admitted into evidence
Copy !req
1156. without an adult pedophile
as a co-defendant
Copy !req
1157. and I understood
that sort of reasoning
Copy !req
1158. but it makes no sense
if my father pleads guilty
Copy !req
1159. and then I go to trial and say,
"I didn't do it"
Copy !req
1160. when all the jurors have already
read in the newspaper
Copy !req
1161. that my father plead guilty.
Copy !req
1162. And I did not want my father
to plead guilty.
Copy !req
1163. I arranged for Mr. Friedman
and his family
Copy !req
1164. to get a jury room
where they could sit
Copy !req
1165. and they could discuss
these plea options.
Copy !req
1166. And while I didn't go
inside the room
Copy !req
1167. except to knock on the door
and say where we're at
Copy !req
1168. in terms of what Mr. Friedman
wanted to do
Copy !req
1169. there was a lot
of yelling and crying
Copy !req
1170. and screaming going on,
coming out of that room.
Copy !req
1171. God damn it!
Copy !req
1172. When I screamed at Arnold,
I screamed
Copy !req
1173. "You must do it
because it'll help Jesse.
Copy !req
1174. Do it for Jesse. "
Copy !req
1175. And my brothers were
just furious at this notion
Copy !req
1176. that my father would go to court
and plead guilty.
Copy !req
1177. And at one point
in all of the chaos
Copy !req
1178. my father
just started screaming.
Copy !req
1179. And there's
uncontrollable tears
Copy !req
1180. and he picked up a chair.
Copy !req
1181. I remember he threw a chair.
Copy !req
1182. He was just screaming about how
he wasn't gonna plead guilty.
Copy !req
1183. He didn't do anything,
he's not gonna plead guilty.
Copy !req
1184. And he was furious
at my mother
Copy !req
1185. and he was
just freaking out.
Copy !req
1186. And I remember very clearly
Copy !req
1187. sitting down with my father
in the corner.
Copy !req
1188. My mother's over there,
brothers are over here.
Copy !req
1189. I'm talking to
my father privately
Copy !req
1190. and he asked me
what he should do.
Copy !req
1191. And I could have said
to my father
Copy !req
1192. "I want you just
to walk out of here
Copy !req
1193. and go to trial
and not plead guilty. "
Copy !req
1194. Instead, I remember
very clearly saying to him
Copy !req
1195. I wanted him
to make the decision.
Copy !req
1196. And I remember feeling like
a really young kid.
Copy !req
1197. Kind of looking up
to my Dad and saying
Copy !req
1198. "Dad, I," you know
"I want you to be my Daddy. "
Copy !req
1199. And I would have been really,
really proud of him
Copy !req
1200. if he had just
stood up and said
Copy !req
1201. "Elaine,
I'm not pleading guilty.
Copy !req
1202. We're going to trial. "
Copy !req
1203. But that's not what happened.
Copy !req
1204. Former New York City
schoolteacher Arnold Friedman
Copy !req
1205. had nothing to say
when he left
Copy !req
1206. the Nassau County Courthouse
in Mineola
Copy !req
1207. but inside he pleaded guilty to
more then 40 counts of sodomy
Copy !req
1208. sexual abuse, and endangering
the welfare of a child.
Copy !req
1209. Attempted sexual abuse
in the first degree
Copy !req
1210. an "E" felony, two counts
Copy !req
1211. and endangering the welfare
of a child
Copy !req
1212. a class "A" misdemeanor,
one count
Copy !req
1213. in full satisfaction
of this indictment?
Copy !req
1214. Yes.
Copy !req
1215. My mother manipulated him.
Copy !req
1216. My mother is crazy
Copy !req
1217. and my mother has control
over my father.
Copy !req
1218. Some relationships have that
Copy !req
1219. where the woman
controls the man.
Copy !req
1220. It's called being pussy whipped.
Copy !req
1221. My father and my mother
Copy !req
1222. are not the only
two people in the world
Copy !req
1223. who have that relationship.
Copy !req
1224. My father and mother
had that relationship.
Copy !req
1225. My mother and the lawyers said,
"Take the plea. "
Copy !req
1226. They took the plea.
Copy !req
1227. I sat there in disbelief.
Copy !req
1228. Is this my brother?
Copy !req
1229. My brother?
Copy !req
1230. This isn't my brother,
he's not a monster.
Copy !req
1231. He's a good loving brother
Copy !req
1232. and husband, and son,
and citizen, and teacher
Copy !req
1233. and this isn't happening.
Copy !req
1234. This is a mistake.
Copy !req
1235. Something as horrendous
as child molestation
Copy !req
1236. you have to live with yourself.
Copy !req
1237. If you didn't do it,
you don't plead guilty.
Copy !req
1238. I never understood it.
Copy !req
1239. We have Elaine.
Copy !req
1240. - Hi.
- We have Teddy, Arnie.
Copy !req
1241. Number 4753206.
Copy !req
1242. Don't.
Please don't film me.
Copy !req
1243. David, I told you
I don't want to be on tape.
Copy !req
1244. Why are you so
Copy !req
1245. When we stop talking to her
Copy !req
1246. She doesn't want
Copy !req
1247. She doesn't want any record,
any record at all
Copy !req
1248. As if they were
Copy !req
1249. Can you believe these kids,
Copy !req
1250. that they have to persecute me?
Copy !req
1251. David, if your mother
doesn't want to be filmed
Copy !req
1252. don't film her.
Copy !req
1253. - OK.
- Come on.
Copy !req
1254. When it was all over,
they said it was all my fault
Copy !req
1255. because I wanted them
to take a plea and
Copy !req
1256. it had been arranged before.
Copy !req
1257. Arnold agreed
to take a plea
Copy !req
1258. but they were very hurt.
Copy !req
1259. I'm still here.
Copy !req
1260. Yeah.
Copy !req
1261. I may not be here
very much longer
Copy !req
1262. but I'm still here.
Copy !req
1263. That's disturbed.
Copy !req
1264. The sentence:
10 to 30 years.
Copy !req
1265. The crime:
Sodomizing young boys.
Copy !req
1266. Defendant Arnold Friedman
had pleaded guilty
Copy !req
1267. to sexually abusing
more than a dozen youngsters,
Copy !req
1268. but this does not end
the Friedman case.
Copy !req
1269. There are still numerous sodomy
and sex abuse charges
Copy !req
1270. pending against Arnold's son,
Jesse Friedman.
Copy !req
1271. I mean we could try this case
in the media.
Copy !req
1272. Who's gonna, who's gonna buy
that I sodomized boys?
Copy !req
1273. Yeah, I agree with you.
I agree with you.
Copy !req
1274. No, I really
Copy !req
1275. Well, I don't think
we have to try
Copy !req
1276. well, all I want to do
Copy !req
1277. We didn't make a deal
with Arnold Friedman
Copy !req
1278. to spare his son.
Copy !req
1279. So his son is facing
a multiple count indictment
Copy !req
1280. he's facing a considerable
amount of jail time
Copy !req
1281. and now he's confronted
with a situation
Copy !req
1282. where Long Island knows
Copy !req
1283. that his father admitted
his guilt
Copy !req
1284. and there's a reasonable
human expectation
Copy !req
1285. of some people that,
you know
Copy !req
1286. where there's smoke,
there's fire.
Copy !req
1287. And if he did it,
maybe his son did it.
Copy !req
1288. We know he was
in the same class
Copy !req
1289. and he was helping his father.
Copy !req
1290. So I think that
was a difficult thing
Copy !req
1291. for Jesse to
have to overcome.
Copy !req
1292. I always believed Jesse.
Copy !req
1293. How could this possibly
go on for 4 years
Copy !req
1294. children repeatedly sodomized
and sexually abused
Copy !req
1295. with brutality
if you believe the police.
Copy !req
1296. And then their parents come
to pick them up
Copy !req
1297. right after computer class
and not one kid is crying
Copy !req
1298. not one kid tells
his mother or father
Copy !req
1299. what happened in class
Copy !req
1300. not one kid says anything?
Copy !req
1301. I find that so incredible
Copy !req
1302. that Jesse's story
that nothing happened
Copy !req
1303. to me was more believable
than the police version
Copy !req
1304. of these horrific acts.
Copy !req
1305. Jesse and I went
Copy !req
1306. we flew in August of 1988
Copy !req
1307. all the way
to Madison, Wisconsin
Copy !req
1308. where we rented a car
and drove 90 miles
Copy !req
1309. to some town that I couldn't
possibly give you the name of
Copy !req
1310. to a federal prison.
Copy !req
1311. Who knew more about this case
then Arnold Friedman?
Copy !req
1312. He knew more about
it than Jesse.
Copy !req
1313. I had to wait 40 minutes
Copy !req
1314. because Arnie was either
playing tennis or golf
Copy !req
1315. I don't remember what it was.
Copy !req
1316. I was outraged.
Copy !req
1317. It was a visiting room.
Copy !req
1318. Jesse was out in the waiting
room at this point
Copy !req
1319. and this man had this little boy
in there who was his son
Copy !req
1320. or his stepson,
I don't know
Copy !req
1321. but the child was about
4 or 5 years old
Copy !req
1322. and they were in the table
right next to us.
Copy !req
1323. And I was interviewing Arnie
Copy !req
1324. and all of a sudden
he leaned over and asked me
Copy !req
1325. if I could ask
the corrections officer
Copy !req
1326. or whoever was in charge
in the room
Copy !req
1327. if we could get another table.
Copy !req
1328. And I asked him why,
and he said
Copy !req
1329. "That little boy over there
bouncing on his father's lap
Copy !req
1330. is getting me very excited. "
Copy !req
1331. It took me about 15 minutes
to regain my composure.
Copy !req
1332. I remember that
like it was yesterday.
Copy !req
1333. I was shocked
Copy !req
1334. 'cause even though I was
involved in the case now
Copy !req
1335. for two months
Copy !req
1336. and even though
I had studied pedophilia
Copy !req
1337. and I knew what these men
did to little boys
Copy !req
1338. I had never heard somebody
actually say it.
Copy !req
1339. And I was absolutely disgusted.
Copy !req
1340. We did change our table
and I spoke to Arnie.
Copy !req
1341. I interviewed him
for a very long time.
Copy !req
1342. He was telling me
that the only reason
Copy !req
1343. he pled guilty
and went to jail
Copy !req
1344. was because he wanted
to save his son, Jesse.
Copy !req
1345. He told me that he was
a pedophile.
Copy !req
1346. He told me that he had
had activity with boys
Copy !req
1347. but not in Great Neck.
Copy !req
1348. He told me that he had a house
in Wading River
Copy !req
1349. a beach resort
Copy !req
1350. and that the family
enjoyed vacations there.
Copy !req
1351. And he told me that
there were certain boys
Copy !req
1352. he took liberties with
Copy !req
1353. and I don't want
to go into it
Copy !req
1354. while he was in that area.
Copy !req
1355. "In my early 40s,
during the summer
Copy !req
1356. I did go 'over the line'
Copy !req
1357. and did have sexually arousing
contact with two boys
Copy !req
1358. short of sodomy.
Copy !req
1359. One of the boys was the son
of a close friend
Copy !req
1360. and I feared exposure
and loss of this friendship.
Copy !req
1361. The boy might have
told his parents
Copy !req
1362. but they said nothing
Copy !req
1363. so I assumed that
he really had not told them. "
Copy !req
1364. That's what? It's one sentence.
What does that mean?
Copy !req
1365. Do you fucking know
what that sentence means?
Copy !req
1366. I don't even fucking know
what that sentence means.
Copy !req
1367. I "sexually aroused?"
Copy !req
1368. What the fuck
is he talking about?
Copy !req
1369. Maybe he put his arm
around the kid.
Copy !req
1370. Maybe he took him
in a sailboat
Copy !req
1371. and he found that
sexually arousing?
Copy !req
1372. Maybe he was leaning
against a tree.
Copy !req
1373. That's called
sexually arousing contact
Copy !req
1374. if you're sexually aroused
while you lean against a tree.
Copy !req
1375. I don't know what that means.
Copy !req
1376. I don't know
what that sentence means.
Copy !req
1377. When Arnold was first arrested,
he said
Copy !req
1378. "I'm arrested because
of this magazine.
Copy !req
1379. I sent one magazine
in the mail
Copy !req
1380. and that's why I'm arrested,
and it's nothing.
Copy !req
1381. It's just nothing.
Copy !req
1382. It doesn't count,
it doesn't matter
Copy !req
1383. it's nothing. "
Copy !req
1384. And you know, you live
as husband and wife
Copy !req
1385. you share certain intimacies.
Copy !req
1386. I said to him,
"Tell me the truth.
Copy !req
1387. What happened?"
Copy !req
1388. He says, "That's it.
That's the truth. "
Copy !req
1389. So it came out that he had
in fact molested a young man.
Copy !req
1390. And we were sitting
in the therapist's office
Copy !req
1391. and he said,
"Oh, I just molested two boys. "
Copy !req
1392. And I said, "Two? Two?"
Copy !req
1393. I said, "I thought
you told me only one. "
Copy !req
1394. "Well," you know, and he
Copy !req
1395. "It didn't matter.
It's nothing," you know.
Copy !req
1396. And then I went berserk.
Copy !req
1397. And I felt betrayed.
Copy !req
1398. Yeah, my father
had the magazines
Copy !req
1399. and yes, my father admitted
that he was a pedophile
Copy !req
1400. and had these fantasies
Copy !req
1401. and yes, my father admitted
that he was no saint
Copy !req
1402. and that there were times
that he slipped
Copy !req
1403. but I was arrested, too
Copy !req
1404. and I'm not a child molester.
Copy !req
1405. And I don't think
it's appropriate
Copy !req
1406. for me to have to answer
for the sins of my father.
Copy !req
1407. This is what I walk around with.
Copy !req
1408. It's just, every day.
Copy !req
1409. It's just ridiculous.
Copy !req
1410. All I think about is the case
and my career
Copy !req
1411. and they're completely,
it's like oil and water.
Copy !req
1412. With the case,
it's a question of research.
Copy !req
1413. My brother's been in
the law library
Copy !req
1414. researching his current plan
Copy !req
1415. and I'm supposed to go out
and make people laugh.
Copy !req
1416. It's unbelievably difficult
to deal with the case
Copy !req
1417. and then go out
and entertain people.
Copy !req
1418. Hey!
Copy !req
1419. Hi, everyone!
Copy !req
1420. We carefully investigated
this case for trial.
Copy !req
1421. Really get into the case,
examine, investigate
Copy !req
1422. and try to build a defense.
Copy !req
1423. While I was out on bail
Copy !req
1424. I put all the charges
into a database
Copy !req
1425. so that they could be
sorted by complainant
Copy !req
1426. by time period,
by nature of charge.
Copy !req
1427. For example,
there was one complainant
Copy !req
1428. 10-year-old boy
Copy !req
1429. says he came to class
in the spring of 1986
Copy !req
1430. and during
this 10-week session
Copy !req
1431. where he was
only over my house
Copy !req
1432. for an hour and a half
once a week
Copy !req
1433. he says that there were
31 instances of sexual contact.
Copy !req
1434. That's 3 times a week
Copy !req
1435. every single week...
Copy !req
1436. for 10 straight weeks
Copy !req
1437. and then the course ends.
Copy !req
1438. In the fall, he re-enrolled
for the advanced course
Copy !req
1439. and says that he was subjected
to 41 more instances
Copy !req
1440. of anal and oral sodomy
in the next 10-week session
Copy !req
1441. and nobody said anything.
Copy !req
1442. Week after week,
month after month
Copy !req
1443. year after year
Copy !req
1444. until after the police
came knocking on doors
Copy !req
1445. and asking questions.
Copy !req
1446. I went to the doorbell.
Copy !req
1447. There were two
Nassau County detectives
Copy !req
1448. and they said they'd like to
speak to our son
Copy !req
1449. with regard to
the Friedman matter.
Copy !req
1450. They came in and said, "We know
something happened to him. "
Copy !req
1451. They didn't say, "We believe. "
Copy !req
1452. They said, "We know. "
Copy !req
1453. And they wanted
to speak to him.
Copy !req
1454. I remember it was actually kind
of a frightening experience
Copy !req
1455. because I remember
they're talking
Copy !req
1456. to my parents about this
within earshot of me.
Copy !req
1457. I remember actually
eavesdropping
Copy !req
1458. on what they said
Copy !req
1459. and what they said
made my heart race
Copy !req
1460. because they were saying
Copy !req
1461. that actually quite
a few horrible things
Copy !req
1462. had happened to
a lot of children
Copy !req
1463. and I was one of them.
Copy !req
1464. And quite honestly,
I didn't believe it
Copy !req
1465. and I was very confused
and very angry about this,
Copy !req
1466. thinking, well,
why are these people
Copy !req
1467. going around
telling my parents
Copy !req
1468. that all kinds of
things have happened
Copy !req
1469. when I have simply no
recollection of anything?
Copy !req
1470. Children want
to please very often.
Copy !req
1471. They want to give you
the answers that you want.
Copy !req
1472. Adults do that as well.
Copy !req
1473. So you have to be
very mindful of the fact
Copy !req
1474. that when you're
interviewing a child
Copy !req
1475. if the child starts
to answer questions
Copy !req
1476. your responses should be
somewhat in the framework of
Copy !req
1477. "And then what happened?"
Copy !req
1478. Or, "What happened next?"
Copy !req
1479. Or, "What do you remember then?"
Copy !req
1480. As opposed to
Copy !req
1481. "He did this to you,
didn't he?"
Copy !req
1482. Or "She did this to you,
didn't she?"
Copy !req
1483. That's a very,
very dangerous type
Copy !req
1484. of interview process to use.
Copy !req
1485. If you talk to
a lot of children
Copy !req
1486. you don't give them
an option, really.
Copy !req
1487. You just, you be
pretty honest with them.
Copy !req
1488. You have to tell them
pretty honestly that
Copy !req
1489. "We know you went
to Mr. Friedman's class.
Copy !req
1490. We know how many times
you've been to the class. "
Copy !req
1491. You know, we go through
the whole routine.
Copy !req
1492. "We know that there
was a good chance
Copy !req
1493. that he touched you
or Jesse touched you
Copy !req
1494. or somebody in that family
touched you
Copy !req
1495. in a very inappropriate way. "
Copy !req
1496. And I listened
to them talking to him
Copy !req
1497. and it got to a point
Copy !req
1498. where it wasn't
asking him what happened.
Copy !req
1499. It was more of them
telling him what happened
Copy !req
1500. and that when they didn't
like what he said
Copy !req
1501. they kept repeating to him
that they know what happened
Copy !req
1502. and that he should tell.
Copy !req
1503. I believe that I remember saying
that I saw Jesse, like
Copy !req
1504. chase after a kid or hit a kid
or something like that
Copy !req
1505. and that's what I testified to
to the grand jury.
Copy !req
1506. And I remember saying
that because I felt
Copy !req
1507. and I feel like
when I said that
Copy !req
1508. that ended the questioning.
Copy !req
1509. And so that might
have meant that
Copy !req
1510. you could infer maybe
that they were asking me
Copy !req
1511. a lot of questions,
trying to get something
Copy !req
1512. and I just wanted
to give them something.
Copy !req
1513. I mean I don't want to be
Copy !req
1514. say I'm a perjurer
or anything
Copy !req
1515. but I did not observe
anything like that happening.
Copy !req
1516. What I do remember is
Copy !req
1517. the detectives putting me under
a lot of pressure to speak up.
Copy !req
1518. And at some point,
I kind of broke down.
Copy !req
1519. I started crying.
Copy !req
1520. And when I started
to tell them things
Copy !req
1521. I was telling myself
that it's not true.
Copy !req
1522. I was telling myself,
"Just say this to them
Copy !req
1523. in order to get them
off your back. "
Copy !req
1524. I came across a document
Copy !req
1525. regarding a group of children
from the Friedman case
Copy !req
1526. who were in therapy
Copy !req
1527. and it stated
that many of them
Copy !req
1528. had absolutely no recollection
of the abuse
Copy !req
1529. and there was some discussion
Copy !req
1530. about whether hypnosis
would be a good idea now,
Copy !req
1531. exactly what you're not
supposed to do.
Copy !req
1532. It was the kind of therapy
Copy !req
1533. that had a really good chance
of messing up kids' memories
Copy !req
1534. and implanting false memories.
Copy !req
1535. My parents put me
in therapy right away.
Copy !req
1536. They put me in hypnosis
Copy !req
1537. and tried to recall facts
that I had buried.
Copy !req
1538. And that's how I first came out,
started talking about it,
Copy !req
1539. just through being hypnotized
and everything
Copy !req
1540. I recalled things
that I would bury.
Copy !req
1541. I was able to talk about them.
Copy !req
1542. For example, what would be
something that you recall?
Copy !req
1543. The actual first time
Copy !req
1544. I actually recalled
that I was actually molested.
Copy !req
1545. Wow, I was actually molested.
Copy !req
1546. I can deal with it now.
Copy !req
1547. That was the first time.
Copy !req
1548. And you recalled through
hypnosis the first episode?
Copy !req
1549. Yes.
Copy !req
1550. So tell me about that,
if you remember.
Copy !req
1551. I don't remember much about it.
Copy !req
1552. It was so long ago.
Copy !req
1553. I just remember that
I went through hypnosis
Copy !req
1554. came out,
and it was in my mind.
Copy !req
1555. 19-year-old Jesse Friedman
Copy !req
1556. was arraigned on more than
198 additional counts
Copy !req
1557. of child sexual abuse.
Copy !req
1558. This brings the total number of
sexual abuse charges to 245.
Copy !req
1559. Jesse was grossly overcharged
Copy !req
1560. and you're basically
terrorizing the defendant.
Copy !req
1561. You're telling the defendant
Copy !req
1562. "Look, if you plead guilty
Copy !req
1563. you know,
we'll give you a good deal
Copy !req
1564. and, on,
you know, 2 charges.
Copy !req
1565. But if you insist
on going to trial
Copy !req
1566. we're going to put
1,003 charges on you.
Copy !req
1567. And if you're convicted
of all those charges
Copy !req
1568. you're gonna rot in jail
the rest of your life. "
Copy !req
1569. I was told that
if he went to trial
Copy !req
1570. the judge would give
3 consecutive sentences.
Copy !req
1571. Instead of concurrent
Copy !req
1572. the sentencing
would be consecutive.
Copy !req
1573. I said, "Oh, my god. "
Copy !req
1574. She just kept telling me
over and over
Copy !req
1575. "The only thing to do
is to plead guilty
Copy !req
1576. and to get the
best deal you can.
Copy !req
1577. You can't go to trial.
Copy !req
1578. It doesn't matter
if you're guilty or innocent.
Copy !req
1579. You can't go to trial,
because if you go to trial
Copy !req
1580. you're gonna go to prison
for the rest of your life. "
Copy !req
1581. I said, "But Ma,
I didn't do it. "
Copy !req
1582. She said,
"That doesn't matter.
Copy !req
1583. You have to plead guilty. "
Copy !req
1584. You have to understand,
this is a 19-year-old kid
Copy !req
1585. and he is now facing the most
heinous charge known to man
Copy !req
1586. and everyone in the world
Copy !req
1587. slowly but surely,
was turning against him.
Copy !req
1588. I don't care about my parents.
Copy !req
1589. I wish it was just my brothers.
Copy !req
1590. Oh, fuck.
Copy !req
1591. I don't care about my mother,
that's for sure.
Copy !req
1592. If my brothers were OK
Copy !req
1593. then my mother could go
to fucking hell.
Copy !req
1594. My father is not going
to survive
Copy !req
1595. if my brother
gets incarcerated.
Copy !req
1596. So
Copy !req
1597. so when the guilty verdict
comes in on Jesse
Copy !req
1598. my father's
gonna kill himself.
Copy !req
1599. Jesse's gonna go to jail
for the rest of his life.
Copy !req
1600. Seth is gonna move west.
Copy !req
1601. Fuck fuck.
Copy !req
1602. I received a telephone call
from Jesse asking to see me
Copy !req
1603. and Jesse told me
that he wanted to plead guilty.
Copy !req
1604. In 1988, there was no way
that a jury in Nassau County
Copy !req
1605. who had been reading
the newspaper headlines
Copy !req
1606. in "Newsday" for over a year
Copy !req
1607. those people were never
going to listen
Copy !req
1608. to anything
the defense had to say
Copy !req
1609. and I was absolutely
terrified
Copy !req
1610. of going to prison
for 100 years.
Copy !req
1611. Jesse had always
maintained his innocence.
Copy !req
1612. I don't work out deals
for people who are innocent.
Copy !req
1613. And my first reaction was,
"I'm not gonna do it.
Copy !req
1614. You're not guilty,
you're not pleading guilty. "
Copy !req
1615. And at that point,
he told me that
Copy !req
1616. "I have something to tell you. "
Copy !req
1617. And with tears rolling down
his eyes, literally
Copy !req
1618. he told me that he was abused by
his father growing up
Copy !req
1619. and that while he never enjoyed
the sexual part of that
Copy !req
1620. he did enjoy the attention
his father gave him
Copy !req
1621. and being with his father
Copy !req
1622. and that not everything
he had said
Copy !req
1623. about nothing happened
was true.
Copy !req
1624. Peter Panaro
was personally convinced
Copy !req
1625. that my father
had sexually abused me
Copy !req
1626. and nothing I could say
Copy !req
1627. could dissuade Peter
from this notion.
Copy !req
1628. Jesse felt that
if Judge Boklan knew
Copy !req
1629. that he also was a victim
of his father
Copy !req
1630. that she might consider
the plea negotiations
Copy !req
1631. in a more favorable way.
Copy !req
1632. He came up with this strategy.
Copy !req
1633. It was Peter Panaro's
fictionalized story
Copy !req
1634. that he fed to me
Copy !req
1635. and said, "If you say this,
it's gonna look good for you. "
Copy !req
1636. I told him
I wouldn't do it.
Copy !req
1637. I told him, "Jesse, when you
plead guilty in open court
Copy !req
1638. you're gonna have to admit
Copy !req
1639. to this type
of anal sodomy 14 times.
Copy !req
1640. And I'm not gonna
let you do that
Copy !req
1641. unless you can admit it. "
Copy !req
1642. He looked me
right in the eye
Copy !req
1643. always liked to call me
by my name
Copy !req
1644. before he made a statement
Copy !req
1645. and said,
"Peter, I can admit it. "
Copy !req
1646. The only concern
that Peter Panaro had
Copy !req
1647. was that ethically
as a lawyer
Copy !req
1648. he couldn't let
his client go into court
Copy !req
1649. and say something happened
Copy !req
1650. that he knew his client
had told him was a lie.
Copy !req
1651. The private investigator wasn't
coming up with anything helpful.
Copy !req
1652. There was not gonna be
any defense witnesses.
Copy !req
1653. There wasn't any money
to hire experts.
Copy !req
1654. Mom was insistent upon
there not being a trial.
Copy !req
1655. Peter Panaro
wasn't believing me
Copy !req
1656. no matter how many times
I told him nothing happened.
Copy !req
1657. I just ran out of options.
Copy !req
1658. Jesse was a very good baby.
Copy !req
1659. I remember when we brought him
home from the hospital
Copy !req
1660. and Arnie looked at
that baby and he said
Copy !req
1661. "That child is marvelous.
Copy !req
1662. He's wonderful"
Copy !req
1663. and he was so thrilled.
Copy !req
1664. And David was the big brother
Copy !req
1665. and he used to
take care of Jesse.
Copy !req
1666. We used to let
David watch him
Copy !req
1667. and he was very protective
of his baby brother.
Copy !req
1668. It's amazing.
Copy !req
1669. Six months from now
Copy !req
1670. I already don't have
a father or a mother.
Copy !req
1671. Six months from now
I'm not gonna have my brother.
Copy !req
1672. If I ever watch this
Copy !req
1673. I don't know when it's gonna be.
Copy !req
1674. I don't know where I'm gonna be.
Copy !req
1675. I don't know what's
gonna happen to my family.
Copy !req
1676. I'm so scared.
Copy !req
1677. I don't want to have
to spend the next 8 hours
Copy !req
1678. screaming with my sons
and fighting with them.
Copy !req
1679. Then don't.
Copy !req
1680. I want them out of this house
tomorrow morning.
Copy !req
1681. Mom
Copy !req
1682. I don't give a shit.
Copy !req
1683. I want you out of this house
tomorrow morning.
Copy !req
1684. You may not
give a shit about Jesse
Copy !req
1685. but we are here for Jesse.
Copy !req
1686. What are you all
talking about here?
Copy !req
1687. Can't you put your anger aside
for one minute?
Copy !req
1688. I cannot put my anger aside
about you.
Copy !req
1689. You have been nothing but
hateful, hostile, and angry
Copy !req
1690. ever since this began.
Copy !req
1691. OK, Jess, we're on.
Copy !req
1692. Ta da. I feel like shit.
Copy !req
1693. What's today's date?
Copy !req
1694. Today's the day
before I went to jail.
Copy !req
1695. "Went" to jail?
Copy !req
1696. - I'm going to jail.
- Because we're watching it.
Copy !req
1697. We're gonna be watching this
after I'm already out of jail.
Copy !req
1698. After 4, 41/2 years
Copy !req
1699. because the case gets reopened.
Copy !req
1700. At this point in time,
my life is as good as over.
Copy !req
1701. It is terminated at this point
only to resume at a later date.
Copy !req
1702. This one'll go,
this one'll shatter.
Copy !req
1703. The night before Jesse's plea
we stayed up all night.
Copy !req
1704. Maybe I shot the videotape
Copy !req
1705. so that I wouldn't
have to remember it myself.
Copy !req
1706. It's a possibility
Copy !req
1707. because I don't really remember
it outside of the tape.
Copy !req
1708. Like when your parents take
pictures of you
Copy !req
1709. do you remember being there
Copy !req
1710. or do you remember
just the photograph
Copy !req
1711. hanging on the wall?
Copy !req
1712. Even if I'm facing the worst
scenario possible tomorrow
Copy !req
1713. and for every day
following it
Copy !req
1714. I have to think tonight
that it's not gonna be that bad.
Copy !req
1715. Goodness knows
Copy !req
1716. I don't want to look
like my father.
Copy !req
1717. Goodness knows,
I want to separate myself
Copy !req
1718. from Arnold Friedman
as much as possible
Copy !req
1719. and I'm not throwing
chairs tomorrow.
Copy !req
1720. Good.
Copy !req
1721. And if this trial
were postponed for 3 years
Copy !req
1722. in 3 years, I would win.
Copy !req
1723. But here today,
at this point
Copy !req
1724. trying to start a trial
in two weeks
Copy !req
1725. I would lose this trial.
Copy !req
1726. We feel this way
Copy !req
1727. and that is
what would happen.
Copy !req
1728. So what are you thinking, Jess?
Copy !req
1729. I'm not.
Copy !req
1730. You're avoiding?
Copy !req
1731. Well, I gotta eat something.
Copy !req
1732. I'm proud to say
Copy !req
1733. I've managed to leave barely
any gas in the car.
Copy !req
1734. See, just our luck
Copy !req
1735. we'll be trapped
at the house.
Copy !req
1736. We'll run out of gas
at the house.
Copy !req
1737. - You a child molester, Jess?
- Nope.
Copy !req
1738. Did you ever do it?
Copy !req
1739. Never touched a kid.
Copy !req
1740. Did you do what
they said you did?
Copy !req
1741. I never touched a kid.
Copy !req
1742. I never saw my father
touch a kid.
Copy !req
1743. Good.
Copy !req
1744. Yeah, but still,
you must have done it.
Copy !req
1745. Yeah, but surely
something has happened.
Copy !req
1746. It must, something.
Copy !req
1747. Because the police
say it's true.
Copy !req
1748. OK, you never
touched a kid, right?
Copy !req
1749. Well, if something happened
Copy !req
1750. it didn't happen
while I was there.
Copy !req
1751. And it was a minimal incident
Copy !req
1752. because the kid didn't
say anything about it.
Copy !req
1753. But the police,
how could they be lying?
Copy !req
1754. Shut up, Seth.
Copy !req
1755. The children
Copy !req
1756. the 14 children in this case
are clearly victims.
Copy !req
1757. No one could ever argue that.
Copy !req
1758. The real culprit here
is Arnold Friedman.
Copy !req
1759. The man is a monster.
Copy !req
1760. He abused him
and he molested him.
Copy !req
1761. This can't be overlooked.
Copy !req
1762. I can't believe we live
in such a cold society
Copy !req
1763. that no one could look at this
man and understand that.
Copy !req
1764. My father raised me confused
Copy !req
1765. about what was right
and what was wrong
Copy !req
1766. and I realize now
how terribly wrong it all was.
Copy !req
1767. I wish I could have done
something to stop it sooner.
Copy !req
1768. I wish there was something
I could have done.
Copy !req
1769. I'm very, I'm
Copy !req
1770. I'm just so sorry it happened.
Copy !req
1771. Judge Boklan
sternly looked down
Copy !req
1772. and said that she recommended
to the parole board
Copy !req
1773. that he serve the maximum period
of time permitted by law
Copy !req
1774. a statement which I felt
was harsh and unnecessary
Copy !req
1775. to a 19-year-old
under these circumstances.
Copy !req
1776. Jesse was a victim.
Copy !req
1777. There's no question,
Jesse was a victim
Copy !req
1778. but even when he was caught
Copy !req
1779. Jesse never expressed any kind
of sympathy for these kids
Copy !req
1780. and as a matter of fact
Copy !req
1781. on the day that
the plea was taken
Copy !req
1782. Jesse was dancing and singing on
the courthouse steps
Copy !req
1783. while being videotaped by
his two brothers.
Copy !req
1784. My brain hurts!
Copy !req
1785. It'll have to come out.
Copy !req
1786. My brain, but I'm using it!
Copy !req
1787. But I'm using it!
Copy !req
1788. Nurse!
Copy !req
1789. Nurse!
Copy !req
1790. They were taking pictures.
Copy !req
1791. I remember someone
brought that to my attention.
Copy !req
1792. We looked out the window.
Copy !req
1793. Because I'm saying
to myself
Copy !req
1794. "This is very bizarre. "
Copy !req
1795. I mean he's about to go to jail
for the next 6 to 18 years
Copy !req
1796. and he's out on
the courtroom steps
Copy !req
1797. in some sort of
theatrical performance.
Copy !req
1798. That is so funny,
when they're all
Copy !req
1799. I think it was about
distracting ourselves
Copy !req
1800. not necessarily
distracting Jesse.
Copy !req
1801. Jesse was
Copy !req
1802. I think he was
the most comfortable
Copy !req
1803. about the whole situation.
Copy !req
1804. You know
Copy !req
1805. I don't know how
he has always been
Copy !req
1806. the most comfortable about it,
but he has.
Copy !req
1807. OK, right about now
Copy !req
1808. we've been waiting for
a good two hours or so now
Copy !req
1809. because evidently the parents
Copy !req
1810. stormed Denis Dillon's
office this morning
Copy !req
1811. when they received
the news last night
Copy !req
1812. that I was to plead guilty
Copy !req
1813. and they were not aware
of this fact.
Copy !req
1814. They were not even aware
that negotiations were underway.
Copy !req
1815. They did not want me
to have less than 10 to 30
Copy !req
1816. and there are a lot of people
Copy !req
1817. probably making all sorts of
angry statements
Copy !req
1818. at this point in time.
Copy !req
1819. I can imagine
what they're discussing.
Copy !req
1820. The meeting must have,
just like our family.
Copy !req
1821. Well, there wasn't really
much of them anyway
Copy !req
1822. but that means
the meeting's over.
Copy !req
1823. That means
the meeting's over.
Copy !req
1824. Go ask them, Jess.
Copy !req
1825. You hold it.
I'm not holding it.
Copy !req
1826. Should I do it, Jess?
Copy !req
1827. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1828. I can't believe this.
Copy !req
1829. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1830. He raped my son!
Copy !req
1831. Get them away from me!
Copy !req
1832. They're animals.
Copy !req
1833. Oh, my god,
I don't believe it.
Copy !req
1834. Wow.
Copy !req
1835. After Jesse went to jail
Copy !req
1836. I know my friends
said to me
Copy !req
1837. "Don't you feel, like,
terrible being alone
Copy !req
1838. in such a big house?"
Copy !req
1839. I said, "No, I feel calm. "
Copy !req
1840. That's when I really started
becoming a person
Copy !req
1841. and started to live.
Copy !req
1842. Elaine divorced him
while he was in prison.
Copy !req
1843. He settled into life there
Copy !req
1844. You can't say
it was good in prison
Copy !req
1845. but it was as good
as it could get for him.
Copy !req
1846. But of course,
the torment continued
Copy !req
1847. and got worse because of Jesse.
Copy !req
1848. My brother never
got over the guilt.
Copy !req
1849. He had talked about
taking his life
Copy !req
1850. because he had this insurance
policy he had taken out.
Copy !req
1851. I think it was $250,000,
1/4 million
Copy !req
1852. and Jesse was the beneficiary.
Copy !req
1853. He said, "This is the only thing
I have left to give Jesse
Copy !req
1854. So he has money
when he gets out
Copy !req
1855. and he can make some kind of
life for himself
Copy !req
1856. because I've screwed it up
otherwise for him. "
Copy !req
1857. By that time, that clause
in the insurance policy
Copy !req
1858. where suicide was payable
had come into effect.
Copy !req
1859. And this is
the coroner's report.
Copy !req
1860. It describes the cause of death
as doxepin intoxication
Copy !req
1861. which basically means
that Arnold took
Copy !req
1862. a massive overdose
of antidepressants.
Copy !req
1863. I took a deep breath
and I said
Copy !req
1864. "It's over, David.
Copy !req
1865. He's out of his misery.
Copy !req
1866. It's over. "
Copy !req
1867. I thought it was a blessing
Copy !req
1868. because the guilt
he was carrying
Copy !req
1869. he was so unhappy.
Copy !req
1870. He was out
of his misery.
Copy !req
1871. The rest of the family wasn't
Copy !req
1872. but he was.
Copy !req
1873. I found it a blessing.
Copy !req
1874. Let me entertain you
Copy !req
1875. Let me make you smile.
Copy !req
1876. It's unbelievably difficult.
Copy !req
1877. I have to read
these horrible letters
Copy !req
1878. about my brother being
almost killed in prison.
Copy !req
1879. My friends call me,
I'm crying.
Copy !req
1880. "Why are you crying?"
I can't tell them.
Copy !req
1881. None of the people
that do what I do
Copy !req
1882. know about this story.
Copy !req
1883. Just the intimation
of something like this
Copy !req
1884. can ruin someone's career.
Copy !req
1885. And I'm always afraid
that's going to happen.
Copy !req
1886. So let me entertain you
Copy !req
1887. And we'll have
a real good time
Copy !req
1888. I feel I will never
really know the truth.
Copy !req
1889. But the one truthful thing
Copy !req
1890. or the honest thing we know
Copy !req
1891. Howard loved his brother.
Copy !req
1892. Howard loved his family.
Copy !req
1893. Loves his family.
Copy !req
1894. And I believed him
when he said
Copy !req
1895. he didn't do
those terrible things.
Copy !req
1896. I believed him.
Copy !req
1897. Arnold had a need
to confess
Copy !req
1898. and he had a need
to go to jail.
Copy !req
1899. And the sad thing is
that he took his son with him.
Copy !req
1900. What's the term about families?
Copy !req
1901. Dysfunctional?
Copy !req
1902. Numero uno.
Copy !req
1903. It was not the way
it was supposed to end.
Copy !req
1904. People were supposed to realize
that all of this was nonsense
Copy !req
1905. and we'd try to go back to
living our normal lives.
Copy !req
1906. Hey! Hi, everyone!
Copy !req
1907. I would have to stare at Arnold
across the dinner table
Copy !req
1908. and it was just
the two of us.
Copy !req
1909. There was really
nothing between us
Copy !req
1910. except these children
that we yelled at.
Copy !req
1911. We named the cottage
"Peaceful Pond Cottage"
Copy !req
1912. because we were looking for
a place of healing and peace.
Copy !req
1913. Any comment on
your personal life, sir?
Copy !req
1914. It's personal.
Copy !req
1915. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1916. Hey, how you doing?
Copy !req
1917. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1918. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1919. Yes! Finally.
Copy !req
1920. - Is that him?
- That could be he.
Copy !req
1921. Shit.
Copy !req
1922. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1923. Oh, my god.
Copy !req
1924. Room service.
Copy !req
1925. Oh, god.
Copy !req
1926. You order a son?
You looking for me?
Copy !req
1927. Surprise.
Copy !req
1928. Hi. Look at me.
Copy !req
1929. Look.
Copy !req
