Captain America (1979)

1. Hey, Steve-o, how you doing, buddy?

2. Real good, man. Real good.

3. Yeah? Where you been? I figured you got outta the marines two weeks ago.

4. Oh, I've been coming down the coast slow and easy, you know, kickin' back.

5. Pretty mellow set of wheels. Yeah.

6. It's my home on the road for the next few years. All right.

7. Did I get any mail? Yeah, I think a couple.

8. Hey, take this.

9. Hey, thanks, man. You're welcome.

10. Here you go.

11. (chuckles) This is the fourth telegram I've gotten

12. from this guy Simon Mills.

13. Three at the base and one waiting for me here.

14. - - What's he selling? - Who knows?

15. Somethin' wrong?

16. - - Can I use your phone? - Yeah, sure.

17. Thanks.

18. Uh, Jeff Haden.

19. Yeah. Jeff? Yeah, it's Steve.

20. Hey, it's good to hear your voice again, Steve.

21. Hey, listen. I just got your letter.

22. Uh, can you tell me what's wrong?

23. Uh, not at the moment.

24. I've, uh, got to see you, Steve.

25. Can you come over to the house?

26. Yeah. I'm just up the coast. I can be there in a little while.

27. Uh, I'm gonna be, uh, stuck here until late tonight.

28. How about 9:00?

29. Fine. I can see this guy Mills in Thousand Oaks on the way into LA.

30. - - I'll see you at 9:00. - Oh, thank you, Steve. I'm very grateful.

31. Hey, if you need me, you got me. You know that.

32. I'll see you tonight. Okay.

33. Hey, thanks, Jer. Yeah, sure.

34. Yeah, I'll be talking to you.

35. Stay well, hear? Okay.

36. - - He's on his way. - Okay, I've got him.

37. Roadwork ahead.

38. You'll have to take the detour over the mountain road.

39. Yeah, okay.

40. - - He's on his way over the hill. - Okay. Get out of there.

41. On our way.

42. He's coming at you. Pull out now.

43. Right.

44. Dr. Mills, a Mr. Steve Rogers is here to see you.

45. Oh. Good. Ask him to come in.

46. Come in, please. Thank you.

47. Steve.

48. I'm Simon Mills.

49. Uh, I'm afraid I don't place you.

50. Well, I'm not surprised. We've never met.

51. Though I feel I've known you ever since you were a kid.

52. Your father was my doctoral adviser.

53. I assisted him in most of his experiments.

54. I used to get daily reports on his son the motorcycle racer and motocross expert.

55. Yeah, well, that was a while ago.

56. You still ride.

57. Yeah, just for the fun of it now.

58. Oh, I'm glad you could finally come and visit us here.

59. I've been wanting to show you our work.

60. Why? I mean, uh— Why me?

61. Well, for one thing,

62. everything we do here is based on your father's primary research.

63. Were you familiar with that at all, Steve?

64. No. He never really talked about it much.

65. I just knew it was very important to him.

66. Hmm. Your father developed and perfected the ultimate steroid.

67. He synthesized it from his own adrenal gland

68. and then, through long research,

69. developed a super hormone.

70. He called it FLAG.

71. That's right. F-L-A-G.

72. Full Latent Ability Gain.

73. I'm not sure I'm following you.

74. Well, science has known for a long time

75. that man in all of his endeavors— mental, physical—

76. uses very rarely more than one-third of his capacity.

77. And with FLAG?

78. Close to a hundred percent.

79. Come on over here. I'll show you what I mean.

80. This little guy is the world's weight-lifting champion.

81. Watch.

82. In human terms, he's lifting something over 2,100 pounds.

83. FLAG?

84. He was injected four days ago.

85. That's fantastic.

86. He's running the human equivalent of 57 miles an hour.

87. But he's also dying.

88. Dying? And so is the weight lifter.

89. I've had six years of failure, Steve.

90. And Dr. Day, who has taken over for me, has had three.

91. Using your father's cultures,

92. we've duplicated the formula, we've produced the serum,

93. and we've seen it work time and time again.

94. There's a tremendous increase in the strength and agility.

95. And each time within two weeks after injection,

96. the test animals slowly madden and die.

97. You have any idea why?

98. Cell rejection.

99. Same problem they had in the early heart transplants,

100. if you remember.

101. You see, Steve,

102. we're still using the original formulations left us by your father.

103. And that's why I asked you to come here.

104. He developed the serum out of his own cells—

105. the same cells he gave by natural process to his only child.

106. You.

107. All I'm asking is that you let us do a few tests.

108. - - (door opens) - Simon.

109. Oh. Um, there's a phone call for you in my office.

110. I'll get back. They said it was important.

111. Oh. Uh, Steve, this is Dr. Wendy Day,

112. who's in charge of FLAG research now.

113. Steve Rogers.

114. I won't be a minute.

115. Hi.

116. So you're in charge of FLAG now, huh? Yes.

117. Tell me something. What's he do?

118. Oh. Simon spends most of his time in Washington right now.

119. Um, I'm not sure exactly what he does.

120. But I do know he talks to the president a lot.

121. Has he talked to you about letting us do some tests?

122. Yeah. I gather you said no.

123. Oh, I didn't say yes or no.

124. Steve, I wonder if you have any idea

125. what a tragedy it was when your father died.

126. Now, I mean, of course not just for yourself, but for this entire nation.

127. Maybe I don't.

128. But he was my dad, and I loved him.

129. And then one day he was gone.

130. And all I had left was a letter from the president, a man I didn't even know.

131. Well, with your father, Steve, FLAG was a great deal more than just a lab experiment.

132. What do you mean?

133. I mean...

134. he injected himself with the serum,

135. and it worked.

136. It worked, Steve. Do you understand what that means?

137. (sighs) Because it worked,

138. he could accomplish things no other man could hope to.

139. And so he dedicated his life to helping the little guy in our society—

140. to righting wrongs that the law wouldn't or couldn't touch.

141. You mean he was a super crime fighter.

142. In one sense, I suppose you could call him that, yes.

143. And now you want me to take his place.

144. No one else can.

145. We're only talking about some tests, Steve.

146. Let me tell you something.

147. All my life I've been taught to live by the three words

148. inscribed in the statue at West Point—

149. duty, honor, country.

150. Hey, it hasn't been a bad life,

151. and lots of times I feel pretty good in here.

152. But it's been "yes, sir,"no, sir"

153. for as long as I can remember.

154. Three military schools and the marine corps.

155. And that's been about it.

156. I think I've paid my dues to Uncle the way my dad would have wanted.

157. Now I just wanna get out on the road,

158. look at the faces of America, maybe get some down on canvas.

159. I don't wanna report in or check out.

160. I don't wanna look forward to weekends.

161. I want every day to be the same.

162. I just wanna kick back and find out who I am.

163. Besides, a friend of mine has some heavy problems right now and needs my help.

164. Good luck to both of you.

165. What do we do?

166. I don't know.

167. Hey, Jeff! Steve!

168. You in here somewhere?

169. Hey, Jeff!

170. Jeff?

171. Hey, Jeff!

172. It's Steve!

173. Jeff?

174. Jeff?

175. Jeff, can you hear me?

176. (weakly) Kathryn.

177. Take it easy.

178. Kathryn.

179. Steve.

180. Please.

181. 2129 Prospect.

182. Please. Please hurry.

183. Maintenance, report to loading dock.

184. Evening, Mr. Brackett.

185. Well? Haden's dead.

186. And the film? What about the film?

187. Just the camera. Empty.

188. And the desk calendar because he had your name written on it.

189. Who did you send in there, Harley?

190. - - Parker. - Parker.

191. Just one tiny but very important little question—

192. what idiocy prompted Parker to kill Haden

193. before we got our hands on the film?

194. I'm sorry, Mr. Brackett, but it was an accident.

195. Haden said he wasn't gonna give up the film, that he'd changed his mind.

196. Parker only meant to scare him.

197. And with his usual deft touch, Parker killed him.

198. Well, that film has to be in that house somewhere.

199. Another problem came up, Mr. Brackett.

200. Yeah.

201. While Parker was in there, Steve Rogers showed up.

202. Rogers, huh?

203. I thought we took care of him

204. on the road we dumped oil on.

205. It was him.

206. Parker dodged him okay and got out while Rogers was phoning for the paramedics.

207. But he said Haden told Rogers something before he died.

208. - - What did he tell him? - Parker couldn't hear it.

209. Then it's fortunate your "accident" didn't work out.

210. Get hold of Rogers and find out if Haden told him where that film is.

211. And then arrange an accident that works.

212. Sooner or later Steve Rogers is gonna be given that FLAG serum,

213. and I want him out of my hair before that happens.

214. Are we clear? Clear.

215. I'll go tell Lester the bad news.

216. Mr. Brackett, you're supposed to put the dust-free gown on

217. before you come into the room.

218. I know, Lester. I'm sorry.

219. - - Did you get the film? - No. Something went wrong.

220. Well, without that last film sequence, I can't proceed.

221. You're aware of that? We'll get the film.

222. Well, we're running out of time,

223. and there's no way I can measure that neutron link

224. without Haden's linear time equation.

225. We're at a dead stop.

226. All we have now is an exceedingly expensive and very accurate timepiece,

227. not a neutron bomb.

228. (beeps) The device is ready.

229. (beeps) All except the missing link.

230. I don't intend to fail now, Lester.

231. We'll have the film.

232. Can you remember, within a minute or two,

233. what time is was when you got to the house?

234. I told you. It was about 10 after 9:00.

235. Is that within a minute or two of being accurate?

236. Does it really matter?

237. It matters.

238. Hey, wait a minute. Can I ask a question?

239. Go ahead. How are you involved in all this?

240. I'm in charge of the project Haden was on.

241. I thought you were in charge of the FLAG project.

242. I'm in charge of several projects for our government.

243. Oh, Steve, this is Charles Barber, Los Angeles FBI.

244. How are you?

245. I'd like to ask you a couple of questions, okay?

246. Sure. If you can think of any that Simon hasn't already asked.

247. How long have you known Haden?

248. All my life.

249. He was a close friend of my father's.

250. Steve, earlier today you mentioned a friend who was in trouble.

251. Was that Haden? Yes.

252. You sure he gave no indication of what his problem was?

253. - - Absolutely not. - And when he was dying?

254. He said "Kathryn,"

255. my name and "please."

256. That's it.

257. Does that mean anything to you? Anything special?

258. Kathryn's the name of his wife.

259. You, of course, know what happened to her?

260. I know she was killed in a plane crash in Europe last year.

261. What about his daughter, Tina?

262. She's at USC. We haven't been able to locate her yet.

263. Oh, great.

264. Now, look, I would like you to look at this room very carefully for me

265. and try and remember

266. if it looks exactly the same as the last time that you saw it.

267. It looks the same. Now, take your time. Take your time.

268. There was a very sophisticated little camera here.

269. It's not there now.

270. - - Anything else? - Wait a minute.

271. There was a desk calendar here too.

272. You remember anything written on it? A name maybe?

273. No.

274. Inspector, Tina Haden's downstairs.

275. Does she know yet?

276. Only that something is wrong.

277. She might have seen the coroner's car leaving.

278. Let me tell her.

279. Oh, Steve. What's happening? Where's Daddy?

280. You've got to be strong, honey.

281. He's dead, isn't he?

282. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

283. I just talked to him today.

284. He said that you were coming over to see us.

285. He sounded so happy.

286. I called earlier to see if anyone was home, but—

287. Why, Steve? Why?

288. I've given her a sedative, but I recommend the hospital for a day or two.

289. I'll call for an ambulance.

290. Simon.

291. What exactly does being "in charge" of these projects really mean?

292. How do you really figure in all this?

293. Let's say that Barber and I work for the same boss.

294. FBI? No.

295. My classification is a little more complex than that. Don't explain.

296. I just don't wanna get involved.

297. We're all involved in this one, Steve.

298. Our friend Haden, Tina, you, me,

299. maybe a lot more.

300. I'm sorry about Haden, Steve.

301. Yeah.

302. What was he working on, Simon?

303. He was director of one of the most secret and carefully guarded projects

304. this nation has.

305. Its code name is Zeus.

306. Never heard of it.

307. It's the neutron bomb.

308. Now you can understand the implications. The camera.

309. Hey, wait a minute.

310. Do you think Jeff was giving out information about the bomb?

311. I think somebody is trying to get that information.

312. We don't know yet if Jeff gave it to them.

313. I hope we're wrong.

314. Hey, I can't believe it. I won't believe it.

315. Simon. Hmm?

316. If he was photographing classified material, it's got to be another reason.

317. Jeff Haden was no traitor.

318. I'll stake my life on it.

319. Good night, Steve.

320. Hello. Steve Rogers?

321. Yeah. Who's this? A friend.

322. A friend who's very upset about what happened to Jeff Haden.

323. Well, what do you know about it?

324. Don't interrupt. I haven't got much time.

325. There's a gas station on Pine Canyon Road

326. about two miles north of Interstate 5.

327. Do you know where that is? Yeah.

328. If you can be there, alone, in 20 minutes,

329. I'll tell you who did that little job tonight and why.

330. But wait— Twenty minutes. No more.

331. Who are you guys?

332. What have you got to tell me?

333. You got it all wrong.

334. It's what you can tell us. We're here to listen.

335. - Where's Haden's film strip? - I have no idea.

336. He talked to you just before he died, didn't he?

337. - - How do you know that? - (chuckles)

338. Do I have to explain that?

339. Dressing.

340. Finish the dressing, please, Susan. Yes, Doctor.

341. Simon, I'm afraid it's very bad.

342. What about a heart pacer?

343. I'm afraid it's too late.

344. Jason, blood pressure 52 and falling.

345. Tissue anoxia.

346. Is it that bad?

347. (sighs) Medically, he's dead now.

348. I think there's just one chance— the FLAG serum.

349. We can't. We don't know what—

350. Wendy, he lost too much blood before they brought him in.

351. Nothing has been able to reverse the shock.

352. Bring me a vial of the serum from the lab, quickly.

353. Simon, we can't. We haven't tested—

354. I'll take full responsibility, and I'll do the injection. Now, do as I say.

355. He's gonna die anyway. Don't you understand?

356. We're committed.

357. Get a blood sample.

358. Simon!

359. There's no rejection.

360. There's no cell rejection.

361. I think I've almost been had twice now, Simon.

362. What do you mean?

363. On the way over to your lab the other day,

364. an oil truck spilled crude all over the road and sent me flying.

365. I thought it was an accident.

366. Now I realize it wasn't.

367. I wish you'd told me about that earlier.

368. Why?

369. What's going on, Simon?

370. Who's mad at me?

371. I might have the answer to that, Steve,

372. but first I, uh—

373. There's something I have to tell you.

374. You were almost gone when they brought you in here.

375. We tried everything, but nothing worked.

376. I made a decision, on my own.

377. I felt that the FLAG serum would give you that one chance—

378. a chance for your body to use its full latent recuperative powers.

379. So you used it? FLAG?

380. I used it. And you're alive.

381. So what happens now?

382. (sighs) Frankly, I don't know.

383. But there's no cell rejection, Steve.

384. I was right about that.

385. - That means I don't die like a laboratory rat? - That's my guess.

386. Your guess? Is that the best you can give me?

387. Well, nothing is a hundred percent, of course.

388. - - Uh— What I mean is— - What you mean is you really don't know.

389. Do you?

390. Are you talking about a guarantee?

391. I'm talking about my life, Simon.

392. Yeah, I'd feel pretty good about a guarantee.

393. You're right.

394. But it is my best medical opinion

395. that you will experience only beneficial results from the serum dosage.

396. Beneficial? Like the super strength and all?

397. Yes.

398. Well, when do we find out about that?

399. We'll find out about it together.

400. As soon as you're well enough, we'll start testing.

401. No, Simon, we won't.

402. What do you mean?

403. We will not test.

404. We're not going to find out what FLAG may have done to me, 'cause I don't wanna know.

405. Steve, you owe it to science to continue—

406. To continue something I didn't start?

407. Something that may kill me in a week, a month, a year?

408. To continue something your own father started

409. and that so far has saved your life, not taken it.

410. I'm grateful for that,

411. but I'm not grateful for the fact that for the rest of my life,

412. I'll never really know how long I have.

413. Hey-Hey, it's okay.

414. I understand.

415. But it's over.

416. I'm not unconscious now. The choice is mine.

417. I don't choose to play.

418. When can I get out of here?

419. In a day or two.

420. Your healing powers are really quite remarkable now.

421. Well, if you should ever decide to change your mind about this—

422. I know. I'll get in touch.

423. Good-bye, Simon.

424. Good luck.

425. How am I?

426. About as fully recovered as any patient in the history of medicine.

427. Well, when can I leave?

428. Doctor told me in the morning if you like.

429. Get dressed, Mr. Rogers. We're gonna take a little trip.

430. It won't make a sound, pal, but it'll make a very big hole.

431. Now, move it.

432. Guys from the gas station, right?

433. So we meet again.

434. Fun, huh?

435. I still need that film.

436. I still don't know what you're talking about.

437. We've got as long as it takes, pal.

438. Now, let's try it again.

439. Get him up.

440. Your friend Haden took some very important pictures for us.

441. Then he got cute and hid the pictures.

442. And then he got dead.

443. Now, we know he said something to you that night.

444. We need to know what.

445. Ain't that simple?

446. - - What's in it for me? - You get to live a little longer.

447. - You wanna live as long as possible, don't you? - Yeah, I guess so.

448. Fine. Where's the film?

449. Once more. Where's the film?

450. I don't know.

451. Well, Mr. Rogers?

452. Get him!

453. Yes. I've got a message for Agent Barber.

454. Tell him there's three suspicious characters

455. down here at Pearson Brothers Meat Packing Plant,

456. and they may know something about Jeff Haden's death.

457. Oh, and, uh, tell them to hurry.

458. I think they're getting a bad case of frostbite.

459. Not bad. You've got talent.

460. It's what I had in mind for maybe the rest of my life. Until I met you.

461. It's different now.

462. How does it make you feel, Steve,

463. being, well, more than other men?

464. - - Frightened. - Not exhilarated?

465. Well, that too, sure.

466. But it's scary and a big responsibility.

467. If I'm not thinking about what I'm doing, I could hurt or kill somebody.

468. If I move this pencil too quickly

469. or hold it too tightly—

470. How would you feel, Simon?

471. I understand.

472. And I also can't help thinking how your father would've felt

473. seeing his life's work coming to fruition in his own son.

474. I never knew him well enough to be able to make a judgment on that.

475. He was truly the most patriotic man I ever knew.

476. And not in a typical flag-waving, corny politician way,

477. but in the real sense that he believed in the American ideal

478. and he tried to live it.

479. He put his life on the line for it time and time again.

480. The American ideal.

481. It's a little tough to find these days, isn't it?

482. Not if you know where to look.

483. Right on.

484. It was the spoilers of that ideal your father went after.

485. The real criminals.

486. The bosses. The organizers.

487. The ones in the really high places.

488. Yeah, I never really got that picture before.

489. He shook so many of them out of the trees

490. that they coined a nickname for him—

491. Captain America.

492. Captain America?

493. They meant it as a mockery, of course, but in a way it fit.

494. Steve, I'm authorized to offer you a job.

495. Very much like mine,

496. only... using your very special talents.

497. You don't mean painting, do you?

498. You know what I mean.

499. Sure. Full Latent Ability Gain.

500. That's a big part of it.

501. Only four people would know— you, me, Wendy and the president.

502. Does he really know about me?

503. And you're gonna make me look bad if you refuse.

504. I've even gone so far

505. as to have some very special equipment designed with you in mind.

506. I'll think about it.

507. Anything you say.

508. For your scrapbook.

509. Sensational.

510. Can I keep it? It's all yours.

511. Steve, think about what I said, huh?

512. And, uh—

513. Stay in touch. Okay.

514. Who'd you talk to?

515. Does he know his business?

516. Uh, hold on.

517. I've got Phoenix on the telephone, Mr. Brackett.

518. They verify the time locks for noon tomorrow. Anything else?

519. Not for them. All right, good job.

520. (handset settles in cradle) In less than 24 hours we'll be under way.

521. Get as many men as you need and stay on Steve Rogers.

522. I don't want him in the way. Is that clear? He won't be.

523. You got a line on that film yet, Mr. Brackett?

524. Oh, the film is in the house somewhere.

525. Haden was tailed every minute. It has to be there.

526. There will be agents under every bush. How are we going to get back in?

527. Tankers 21 and 22 are ready for dispatch.

528. I think I can work that out.

529. (laughing) Come on. Let's go.

530. Oh, the water's freezing.

531. It's cold.

532. Hey, the water's not cold. (laughs)

533. (laughs) Oh, gosh!

534. How'd you manage to get away from Mills?

535. I promised to try a little special recruiting technique.

536. Okay, begin.

537. My heart isn't in it. Hey, what's that suppose to mean?

538. Steve, I'm not even sure I want you in the company.

539. I thought you ran an equal opportunity store.

540. Look, you've been run off the road, you've been blown up,

541. you've been kidnapped.

542. Maybe you ought to get the message.

543. Are you worried about me?

544. Maybe.

545. I wish you hadn't done that.

546. Why?

547. Simon's looking. (laughs)

548. I hope I'm interrupting.

549. Well, I've been on the phone with Inspector Barber.

550. He's been going over Haden's background with a fine-tooth comb,

551. and there's nothing.

552. (sighs) You and I were his only friends.

553. We and a heavyweight industrialist named Lou Brackett

554. who came up with some endowments to the university over the years.

555. - - Clean, as far as we can tell. - That put us right back where we started.

556. Except for one thing— the death of Jeff's wife.

557. It was an accident. Maybe. But don't forget.

558. One of the last words to me was his wife's name.

559. - - Why? - Why what?

560. Why would he say "Kathryn, please," instead of maybe telling me who killed him?

561. Maybe he didn't know who killed him.

562. I think there's something there. Something to do with Jeff's wife.

563. The crash was an accident. It was checked out. Maybe.

564. It's still the only unusual event in Jeff's life.

565. We checked with Tina. She doesn't remember anything unusual.

566. Well, she can't remember 'cause she's really upset.

567. Why don't you take her to lunch,

568. try and get to know her.

569. I'd be delighted.

570. Where do I find her?

571. Oh, Barber tells me she moved back into her house.

572. Here.

573. I'll see you guys later.

574. She really is something, isn't she?

575. She sure is.

576. Made up your mind yet?

577. The boss is gonna want an answer one of these days— in or out.

578. You'll be the first to know.

579. Well, in that case, I wanna show you something that might help you to decide.

580. Get your clothes. Come on.

581. Stand by, chopper. They're getting ready to leave.

582. How'd you get ahold of that?

583. We borrowed it from the people you had repairing it.

584. We finished the job and added a few little touches of our own.

585. Those the touches you wanted me to see?

586. Mm-hmm.

587. Doesn't look that much different.

588. The difference wasn't designed to be noticeable. (clicks)

589. Hey, this thing scramble eggs on Sunday too?

590. (chuckles) And it whistles "Dixie."

591. Well, how do you get it out of here?

592. Rocket assist for launch out of the van

593. and jet assist for high-speed acceleration.

594. Come on over here.

595. There's a switch under here keeps it standard.

596. You flip it back and it's whisper silent.

597. Now, look.

598. The material and the aerodynamic design of the shield is really interesting.

599. It's bulletproof and a rather deadly weapon.

600. Why don't you try it out, see what it can do.

601. I'm with him now. I'm pulling up. MAN #2 (on radio): Faster!

602. MAN #1 (on radio): I'm trying to keep up.

603. MAN #2 (on radio): He's getting away.

604. MPs!

605. Now, put this thing down slow and easy.

606. And do it now!

607. Anything you say, mac. Anything you say.

608. I've dreamed about this for nine years,

609. and now I saw it and I still can't believe it.

610. It's incredible, Simon.

611. It's not just strength and agility. It's vision and hearing.

612. I could see everything. And I could hear them even over the sound of the chopper.

613. Of course. We should have anticipated that.

614. How much more, in gain, will there be?

615. You've attained maximum capability by now.

616. From here on, it's just discovering what that really means.

617. Learning to adapt to it, how to live with it.

618. Yeah. That'll be the tough part.

619. Tina.

620. Tina, come here.

621. Look, I know how you feel about your father.

622. I know he wasn't a traitor to his country.

623. But I also know that you and I can prove it.

624. How do we do that?

625. Applied logic. Sit down.

626. You know,

627. I've never known a father and daughter closer than you two were.

628. It was really something very special to see, Tina.

629. Your father was a bright man.

630. I can't believe he would hide that film

631. so you couldn't find it if anything happened to him and clear his name one day.

632. He never said a word.

633. Well, he wouldn't. He couldn't.

634. Tina, think back.

635. Was there something between the two of you,

636. something special that nobody else could know?

637. What were the things you did together?

638. Things you both loved? Just the two of you.

639. There were so many things.

640. Reading. Games. Fishing.

641. Fishing.

642. Go on.

643. - It's silly. It's too far out. - Try, Tina.

644. Well, I was probably only 11 or 12.

645. We used to play a game.

646. We'd hide little notes from each other.

647. If we couldn't find them, we had to do whatever the other one had written down on the note.

648. Things like, he'd have to take me fishing with him or buy me something.

649. He would have done it for me anyway.

650. Once, I hid the note so well he couldn't find it.

651. So I had to drop clues until he caught on.

652. Where did you hide it?

653. He was cleaning some fly rods.

654. So when he closed his eyes,

655. I rolled up the note and dropped it inside the hollow part of the rod.

656. I see.

657. I remember because that's what he was doing the— the night—

658. Where, Tina? Where was he cleaning them?

659. Upstairs in his den.

660. Tina, would you see who that is?

661. It's a woman. I don't know who she is.

662. I do.

663. She works for the government. She can help us.

664. Miss Haden? Yes. Come in.

665. Thank you.

666. Now we'll all take a little ride.

667. How long has it been since Wendy checked in?

668. Almost 12 hours.

669. They're either onto something or the other side has made a move.

670. If that's it, we'll hear from them.

671. Tina's just a kid. (phone rings)

672. Mills here.

673. I have two visitors here.

674. Are they all right?

675. For the moment, yes. Tanker 33—

676. But they're aware of certain facts

677. that I can't afford to have made public right now.

678. Let me talk to one of them. Just listen.

679. If you ever hope to see either of them alive again, you will do absolutely nothing.

680. (Brackett low, indistinct) Put that tanker in pumping bay 7.

681. You will keep the FBI out of this.

682. And most important, you will keep Steve Rogers out of this.

683. Disobey and they will die.

684. The truck's ready.

685. Finished.

686. Is everything understood?

687. Parker and I drive you in the truck.

688. Everyone else arrives by helicopter at eight minutes after noon.

689. The timing must be precise.

690. Our man has synchronized the time locks to open at exactly 12:00 noon.

691. We detonate the bomb at exactly...

692. 11:58.

693. The bomb.

694. All right, get it on the truck.

695. The radiation suits too.

696. Unless, of course, you care to die in Phoenix.

697. Got a hundred men in the field now, but where?

698. Give me something to go on. I've told you all we know.

699. What about the guy's voice? Accent, timbre, inflection. Anything unusual.

700. It could have been anyone, Charles.

701. Simon.

702. Remember when I told you what FLAG did for my hearing and all?

703. Well, during that call, I think I heard something that might help us.

704. Like what? I'm sure I heard somebody say,

705. "Put that tanker in pumping bay number 7."

706. - -Does that mean anything to you? - Well, a tanker, sounds like, uh—

707. Sounds like oil or gas to—

708. Wait a minute. That rings a bell.

709. A company called Andreas Oil made several research grants to Haden over the years.

710. So— Lou Brackett owns Andreas Oil.

711. Brackett was one of Haden's oldest friends. They worked together as young men.

712. My guess is he knew exactly what Haden was working on.

713. And probably has Tina and Wendy right now.

714. It also explains how come an oil truck accidentally spilled all over the road you were on.

715. Lou Brackett. Andreas Oil Company.

716. Could it be? Well, let's find out.

717. Hey, wait.

718. If we're right, he'll be ready.

719. We go in there in force, we'll never see Tina and Wendy again.

720. He's right.

721. Simon, I'd like to talk to you alone.

722. I'll be outside.

723. Simon, you have the authority to make a decision stick. I want you to make one.

724. Don't make it too tough.

725. I could do this my way. I go in there alone.

726. So we both know I have the talent. Barber wouldn't understand.

727. But you make it stick anyway.

728. Okay. But I've got one condition. Well, you would have.

729. You gave me the idea yourself.

730. Steve, FLAG has made you a marked man. You know that.

731. They've tried to kill you three times already

732. just on the chance that you might turn out be the man your father was.

733. Think about it. Every time you use that strength or special skill of yours,

734. intentionally or otherwise, it'll be like writing your name in the skies.

735. It's possible. All right.

736. You're gonna need something to protect you on that bike anyway.

737. Why not make it a disguise?

738. Something that will make it impossible for them to remember or even recognize you at all.

739. You got to be kidding. This is my drawing. Why not? It's perfect.

740. They ridiculed your father, remember?

741. Called him Captain America and finally murdered him.

742. Be Captain America, Steve.

743. Jam Captain America down their throats

744. and, at the same time, protect yourself.

745. Will this work?

746. As long as your heart continues to beat, the bomb won't detonate.

747. Until, of course, you disconnect and trigger it.

748. Mm. What if we run into trouble, like the police?

749. (clears throat) Well, they dare not shoot you. The bomb goes off.

750. That's your safe passage.

751. Hey!

752. All guards to area 4.

753. Tanker 21 and 22—

754. The girls, where are they?

755. In a room under number two stack.

756. They-They're all right.

757. Where's Brackett? He's gone.

758. Show me where his office is.

759. Where's Brackett's confidential papers?

760. In the cabinet.

761. Open it up.

762. Come on, little man.

763. Clear area 7. Clear area 7.

764. Go!

765. Check this file. I think you'll find it interesting.

766. Get out of here.

767. (indistinct)

768. Where's Brackett? There's nothing you can do! It's too late!

769. Too late for what?

770. It's too late to stop him. They pulled out four hours ago.

771. What's he going to do?

772. All right, tell me.

773. (gagging) He's got the bomb. Neutron bomb.

774. What's he going to do with it?

775. At noon, they're all going to die.

776. Barber's had his best interrogators working on Wiant for over two hours.

777. He won't tell them a thing.

778. "At noon, they all die." Who dies? Where? Why?

779. Well, if Brackett has the neutron bomb,

780. that could mean an awful lot of people.

781. But why? Brackett is no mad-dog killer. He is after something.

782. The question is what?

783. Whatever it is, it's got to be within a 500-mile radius of Los Angeles.

784. Why? What if they're traveling by jet?

785. No, Wiant said "pulled out."

786. That doesn't sound like an airplane to me.

787. Simon, how big is a neutron bomb?

788. About 2,000 pounds. You'd need a truck.

789. Right. Andreas Oil has lots of trucks.

790. And trucks pull out.

791. We're looking for an Andreas Oil truck within about 500 miles.

792. Let's find out from National Security

793. what the prime secure targets are in that area.

794. Is your computer operative? Sure is.

795. Access route AX1A1.

796. Stand by for voiceprint ID. Standing by.

797. Insert voiceprint ID, please.

798. Willow tree 100. You're cleared for access.

799. Let me have an update on prime secure targets within 500 miles of Los Angeles.

800. Hard copy.

801. Okay.

802. There are 12 in place missiles within that area, four mobile missiles,

803. Los Angeles gold repository— 92 million currently on deposit—

804. the Far West National Emergency Command Center under the San Bernardino mountains,

805. and the Phoenix International Gold Repository— 1.4 billion in bullion.

806. And a neutron bomb only kills people. The gold will be intact.

807. Simon, that's got to be it.

808. If it was an LA repository, they'd be there by now.

809. Why would they settle for 100 mil when there's over a billion available?

810. - - What time is it? - Six minutes to 10:00. We've got about two hours.

811. Could the air force help?

812. If they could have that truck blown sky high—

813. Along with every man, woman and child in the area. It's got to be done by hand.

814. Simon, can you still jock a helicopter? A fast one?

815. - That's something you don't forget. - I'll meet you at the pad.

816. There's the road.

817. Anything?

818. Nothing yet.

819. Of course not. They wouldn't take this main highway.

820. It has an inspection station and a truck scale.

821. Which road do you think they'll take?

822. The old road. We can get to it by crossing the reservoir.

823. I think I make a truck up ahead marked Andreas Oil.

824. - - I don't see it. - You will in a minute.

825. Where do you wanna get off, Steve?

826. The road turns south up ahead.

827. Get down low over the desert and I'll go out there.

828. Then what? I don't know yet.

829. I'll stay in touch by radio.

830. Okay.

831. - - Chopper One, do you read? - Loud and clear.

832. I just dropped my bike, Simon.

833. I was watching. My people are picking it up now.

834. Okay.

835. Henry! Henry!

836. What-What's the matter?

837. What are you saying? You better pull over, Parker.

838. (pounding) Henry! Stop the truck!

839. Henry— (coughs)

840. Parker, give me the keys!

841. Chopper, do you read? Go ahead.

842. I'm inside the trailer.

843. I'm looking at a large metal object 10 feet by 2

844. set into a soft suspension cradle.

845. Are there any lights or dials on the thing?

846. Yes. There's two blue lights and one green blinking light. There's also a digital clock.

847. Is there a faint hum just a little louder than an electric clock might make?

848. Yes.

849. Well, it could be a neutron bomb. That's for sure.

850. Is Brackett there? Yes. He's a little sick from some fumes I routed in here.

851. Chopper. Go ahead.

852. Simon, this guy's got some device strapped to his chest.

853. What is it? It looks like a dead-man switch of some kind.

854. I guess it's reading his pulse.

855. If you're right, it probably means the bomb goes off if his pulse stops. How's he doing?

856. Not so good. (wheezing)

857. Describe what he looks like.

858. His lips are blue. He's gasping for air,

859. and it kind of rattles in his throat when he does breathe.

860. All I can see are the whites of his eyes.

861. That doesn't sound good.

862. Uh, roll him over on his back, Steve.

863. Make sure his throat is clear and that he's not strangling on his own tongue.

864. If he dies, we all die.

865. I'm almost there.

866. How is he? You're the doctor.

867. Hold that right there, Steve.

868. Pulse is steadying up.

869. He's breathing easier now. It's all right.

870. - - He gonna make it? - (siren blaring in distance)

871. - That means we're all gonna make it, right? - Right.

872. Sounds like the calvary is about ready to arrive.

873. Cops, MPs and a bomb squad from the Atomic Energy Commission.

874. Wait for me in the chopper. I'll turn this over to them and we can get out of here.

875. - - You're the doctor. - Will you stop saying that?

876. Right. Thank you.

877. Barber's bringing your mom over now.

878. I can't believe it. I can't believe she's really alive.

879. You better believe it. The whole plane crash was faked.

880. Brackett held her prisoner all these months.

881. Tina, the pressure on your father had to be incredible.

882. Not being able to tell you the truth.

883. Knowing your mother's life depended on him delivering film on the neutron bomb to Brackett.

884. How can I thank you all? Just be happy.

885. - - (horn honking) - It's Mother.

886. That's beautiful.

887. Yes, it is.

888. Captain America did a pretty good job.

889. Yeah. He did jam himself down a few throats, didn't he? (chuckles)

890. What do you say, Steve? Do we put Captain America on a permanent basis?

891. Yes. But there's still one thing bothering me, Simon.

892. If I'm going to be Captain America,

893. I want to be the same Captain America my father was in every way.

894. I don't just wanna do the things he did.

895. I want to look the way he did as well.

896. How do you like it, Simon?

897. Magnificent!
