37. But my life, from my own point of view, has been full of drama. Right?

38. And so I thought if I could write a book that - that could capture what it's like

39. to... to really meet somebody.

40. And one of the most exciting things that's e ver happened to me

41. is to really meet somebody, make that connection.

42. And if I could make that valuable, you know, to capture that,

43. that - that would be the attempt, or...

79. But that doesn't matter, because what he wants is to fight for meaning.

80. You know? I mean, happiness is in the doing, right?

81. Not in the getting what you want.

82. So he's sitting there,

83. and just that second

84. his little five-year-old daughter hops up on the table.

85. And he knows that she should get down, 'cause she could get hurt.

86. But she's dancing to this pop song in a summer dress.

87. And he looks down, and all of a sudden, uh, he's 16.

88. And his high school sweetheart is dropping him off at home.

89. And they just lost their virginity, and she loves him,

90. and the same song is playing on the car radio.

91. She climbs up and starts dancing on the roof of the car.

92. And now he's worried about her.

93. And she's beautiful, with a facial expression just like his daughter's.

94. In fact, maybe that's why he e ven likes her.

95. See, he knows he's not remembering this dance. He's there.

96. He's there in both moments simultaneously.

97. And just like for an instant, all his life is just folding in on itself.

98. And it's obvious to him that time is a lie,

398. And that's when he pulled out his gun like this, and he went,

402. And then they left.

403. The next morning I called for an application to get a gun.

405. But then I realized something was wrong,

408. So I canceled my demand for the gun and I called the police station

409. and tried to complain about that cop's behavior, but -

529. For example, I was working for this organization that helped villages in Mexico.

530. Their concern was how to get the pencils sent to the kid in those little country schools.

531. It was not about big, revolutionary ideas. It was about pencils.

532. I see the people that do the real work, and what's really sad in a way is that

533. the people that are the most giving, hard-working and capable of making this world better

534. usually don't have the ego and ambition to be a leader.

535. They don't see any interest in superficial rewards.

536. They don't care if their name ever appears in the press.

537. They actually enjoy the process of helping others.

538. They're in the moment.

539. Yeah, but that's so hard, you know, to be in the moment.

540. I just feel like I'm designed to be slightly dissatisfied with everything.

542. I satisfy one desire, and it just agitates another.
