1. Tonight's program takes us backstage

2. to witness firsthand the creation, start to finish,

3. of a new play mounted on the American stage.

4. Asteroid City does not exist.

5. It is an imaginary drama

6. created expressly for this broadcast.

7. The characters are fictional, the text hypothetical,

8. the events an apocryphal fabrication,

9. but together they present an authentic account

10. of the inner workings of a modern theatrical production.

11. Our story begins, of course, with an ink ribbon.

12. Conrad Earp, playwright, native of upper Wyoming,

13. well-known for his romantic poetic tapestries

14. of life west of the Rocky Mountains.

15. There is little amusement to be had, however,

16. in watching a man type.

17. Skip ahead, then, past the lonely, agonized months

18. of composing, revising, polishing, editing, rewriting,

19. cutting, pasting, pacing, doodling and solitary drinking,

20. and join our company as they take the stage

21. for their first read-through rehearsal.
