1. I looked them up.Copy !req
2. They're aphids.Copy !req
3. They're in my hair, on my skin,
in my lungs.Copy !req
4. And the pain, Barris, it's unreasonable.Copy !req
5. They're all over the place.Copy !req
6. - They've completely gotten Millie too.
- Okay, okay, wait, wait, wait.Copy !req
7. Listen, you gotta get out of there.
I'll meet you over at Joe's Cafe at 3.Copy !req
8. Calm down, everything's gonna be fine.Copy !req
9. Put a couple of them in a jar
so I can get them examined.Copy !req
10. I'm sure they're aphids,
but you never know.Copy !req
11. Just in case, okay? Just do it.
Relax, relax.Copy !req
12. Gentlemen of the Anaheim 709th chapter
of the Brown Bear Lodge...Copy !req
13. we have a wonderful opportunity
this afternoon.Copy !req
14. The county of Orange has provided us
with a chance...Copy !req
15. to hear from and put questions to...Copy !req
16. an undercover narcotics agent
who is out there on our behalf...Copy !req
17. fighting this awful
Substance D epidemic.Copy !req
18. It's no secret we're living
in a culture of addiction.Copy !req
19. Nearly 20 percent of the population
can now be classified as addicts.Copy !req
20. And as far as anyone can tell,
there is but one company...Copy !req
21. that is working and helping
this situation.Copy !req
22. That company is our sponsor, New Path.Copy !req
23. You will notice
you can barely see this man...Copy !req
24. because he is wearing
what is called a "scramble suit."Copy !req
25. The exact same suit he wears
and, in fact, must wear...Copy !req
26. during certain parts, in fact, most parts,
of his daily activities of law enforcement.Copy !req
27. This man, whom we will call Fred
because that is the code name...Copy !req
28. under which he reports
information he gathers...Copy !req
29. once within the scramble suit...Copy !req
30. cannot be detected by even the latest in
voice- and facial-recognition technology.Copy !req
31. The scramble suit itself
is purportedly made up...Copy !req
32. of approximately a million and a half
fraction-representations...Copy !req
33. of men, women, and children
in every variant...Copy !req
34. making the wearer of a scramble suit
the ultimate Everyman.Copy !req
35. This is terrible.Copy !req
36. He looks, does he not,
like a constantly shifting, vague blur...Copy !req
37. and nothing more, am I right?Copy !req
38. Let's hear it for the vague blur.Copy !req
39. If you saw me on the street
without this suit on, you'd say:Copy !req
40. "There goes a total dope fiend."Copy !req
41. You'd feel aversion and walk away.Copy !req
42. I don't look like you. I can't afford to.Copy !req
43. My life depends on it.Copy !req
44. I'm not going to tell you first
what I do as an undercover officer...Copy !req
45. tracking down dealers and the source
of their illegal drugs...Copy !req
46. in the streets of our cities
and corridors of our schools...Copy !req
47. here in Orange County.Copy !req
48. I'm going to tell you what I'm afraid of.Copy !req
49. What I fear, night and day,
is that our children...Copy !req
50. your children and my children...Copy !req
51. I have two little ones, very little...Copy !req
52. but not too little to be addicted.Copy !req
53. Calculatedly addicted to Substance D
for profit by drug terrorists.Copy !req
54. As many of you know,
our military and their associates...Copy !req
55. are actively engaged in countries...Copy !req
56. where it is believed
the organic component of Substance D...Copy !req
57. a small, highly toxic
flower, originates.Copy !req
58. And while our troops are down there
fighting for us...Copy !req
59. it is up to each and every
one of us here...Copy !req
60. to do our part in eliminating
the demand for this drug.Copy !req
61. It's important you as citizens
continue to report...Copy !req
62. all suspicious activity
and individuals...Copy !req
63. for, simply put, if there were
no demand in our society...Copy !req
64. there would be no market
for these leeches to exploit.Copy !req
65. Each day, this disease
takes its toll on us.Copy !req
66. And each day, the flow of profits
and where they go...Copy !req
67. Well, it isn't about the profits anyhow,
it's something else.Copy !req
68. What'd you see happen?Copy !req
69. If you were a diabetic
and you didn't have money for insulin...Copy !req
70. would you steal to get the money
or just die?Copy !req
71. I think you better go back to the,
you know, prepared text there, Fred.Copy !req
72. I forgot it.
I think I have a block against this shit.Copy !req
73. Repeat after me,
but make it sound casual.Copy !req
74. "Where the profits flow,
we will s...Copy !req
75. and then
retribution will swiftly follow.Copy !req
76. At that moment, I would not
want to be in their shoes." Got it?Copy !req
77. You know why I've got a block
against this bullshit?Copy !req
78. Because this is what gets people
on drugs.Copy !req
79. It's all so disgusting you want
to lurch off and become a user.Copy !req
80. Come on, Fred, just say this shit
and get it over with.Copy !req
81. Anyway...Copy !req
82. Substance D.Copy !req
83. D.Copy !req
84. D is for dumbness and despair
and desertion.Copy !req
85. The desertion of your friends from you,
you from your friends.Copy !req
86. Everyone from everyone.Copy !req
87. Isolation and loneliness...Copy !req
88. and hating and suspecting each other.Copy !req
89. D is, finally, death.Copy !req
90. Slow death.Copy !req
91. From the head down.Copy !req
92. Well, that's it.Copy !req
93. Okay, let's eat.Copy !req
94. All right, what's your name?Copy !req
95. My name...Copy !req
96. You don't know your name?
Well, that's interesting.Copy !req
97. Probable cause. Out of the car, sir.Copy !req
98. Now, you have the right
to remain silent until...Copy !req
99. And... And anything you say can and will
be used against you when you...Copy !req
100. When what?Copy !req
101. You know, fuck this shit.Copy !req
102. - Hello?
- Hey, how you doing?Copy !req
103. Oh, I'm all right.Copy !req
104. Anything wrong?Copy !req
105. Just this fucker stole 50 bucks' worth
of shit from us today.Copy !req
106. And my boss said it was somehow my fault,
and it's coming out of my paycheck...Copy !req
107. which I don't even think is legal.
I mean, can he legally do that?Copy !req
108. Yeah, they can't do that.Copy !req
109. At least, they used to not
be able to do that. I'll check.Copy !req
110. Hey, Donna, can I get anything from you?Copy !req
111. Yeah, how much?Copy !req
112. - Ten.
- Ten?Copy !req
113. Yeah, I'm hurting really bad.
I'll pay you back later.Copy !req
114. - Yeah, okay. Say, day after tomorrow?
- Any sooner?Copy !req
115. I'll come by later, like around 8?Copy !req
116. Yeah. I'll see you later.Copy !req
117. - Okay. All right, bye.
- Okay, bye.Copy !req
118. You see, all symptoms are purposeful,
be they positive or negative.Copy !req
119. You see?
I wouldn't feel strangely about it.Copy !req
120. Just the idea of turning yourself
over for rehabilitation...Copy !req
121. is only naturally gonna make you
a little apprehensive.Copy !req
122. But that's just a manifestation
of the fear.Copy !req
123. It's just the:
That's the D talking.Copy !req
124. You know, the first thing I hear,
that when you go into the New Path...Copy !req
125. what they do to you,
they cut your pecker off.Copy !req
126. They could never get away with that.
You kidding? That's a myth.Copy !req
127. It's actually the spleen
that's remanded to their custody.Copy !req
128. - The what?
- Hey, how is everything?Copy !req
129. Everything is super good.Copy !req
130. Not with me.
I got a lot of problems nobody else has.Copy !req
131. No, no, come on.
More people than you'd think.Copy !req
132. And more people each day. This is a
world getting progressively worse.Copy !req
133. Can we not agree on that?Copy !req
134. - What's on the dessert menu?
- Would you like to order some dessert?Copy !req
135. Like what?Copy !req
136. Well, we have fresh strawberry pie...Copy !req
137. and fresh peach pie
that we make here ourselves.Copy !req
138. - No, we don't want any dessert.
- All right.Copy !req
139. Fucking fruit pies are for old ladies.Copy !req
140. - What do you think about New Path?
- While it doesn't matter...Copy !req
141. what I think, I kind of
have to tip my hat to any entity...Copy !req
142. that can bring
so much integrity to evil.Copy !req
143. I mean, imagine this:
A seemingly voluntary, privatized gulag...Copy !req
144. managed to eliminate the middlemen
of public accountability and free will.Copy !req
145. Wrapped it up in a bow
and gave it like a gift.Copy !req
146. I mean, come on, this is:Copy !req
147. This is awe-inspiring stuff.Copy !req
148. I heard you have to go cold turkey.Copy !req
149. Cold turkey doesn't even apply
to Substance D.Copy !req
150. Unlike the legacy of inherited predisposition
to addictive behavior or substances...Copy !req
151. this needs no genetic assistance.Copy !req
152. There's no weekend warriors on the D.
You're either on it...Copy !req
153. or you haven't tried it.Copy !req
154. - Well, I like it.
- Yeah.Copy !req
155. How many caps do you take per day?Copy !req
156. Very difficult to determine.Copy !req
157. But not that many.Copy !req
158. Well, like the old-school pharmacopoeia,
a tolerance develops, you know.Copy !req
159. These visions of bugs,
they're just garden-variety psychosis...Copy !req
160. but a clear indication
that you've hurdled...Copy !req
161. over the initial fun and euphoric phase
and passed on...Copy !req
162. to the next phase.Copy !req
163. News from the guinea-pig grapevine
suggests that whatever it is...Copy !req
164. we won't know
until it's way too late, you see?Copy !req
165. You see that we're all canaries
in the coalmine on this one?Copy !req
166. I do think I have another source.Copy !req
167. That Donna chick.Copy !req
168. - Bob's girl?
- Yeah.Copy !req
169. Yeah, his girl. Although I know
for a fact he never gets in her pants.Copy !req
170. Really?Copy !req
171. - But he talks like he does.
- Oh, yeah.Copy !req
172. That's Bob Arctor.
He talks like he does many things.Copy !req
173. That's not the same, my friend.
That's not the same thing.Copy !req
174. Donna has an aversion to bodily contact.Copy !req
175. I mean, junkies lose their interest in sex,
you realize...Copy !req
176. due to organs swelling up
from vasoconstriction.Copy !req
177. And I have observed in her
an inordinate failure of sexual arousal...Copy !req
178. not just toward Bob Arctor...Copy !req
179. but other males as well.Copy !req
180. I can't believe she doesn't put out.Copy !req
181. Well, she would if she were handled right.Copy !req
182. For instance, I could show you
how to sleep with her...Copy !req
183. for less than 3 dollars.Copy !req
184. I don't wanna sleep with her.
I wanna buy from her.Copy !req
185. Donna does coke, all right?Copy !req
186. Three dollars doesn't get you
a line of coke.Copy !req
187. That's where you're wrong, pal.Copy !req
188. What they've deliberately done...Copy !req
189. is mix the cocaine with the oil
so it cannot be extracted.Copy !req
190. But my knowledge of chemistry is such...Copy !req
191. that I know precisely
how to separate the oil from the cocaine.Copy !req
192. Now, now I will freeze it.Copy !req
193. Cause cocaine crystals to rise to the top
because they are lighter than the oil.Copy !req
194. The terminal step, of course,
I keep to myself...Copy !req
195. but suffice to say, it involves an intricate
and methodological process of filtering.Copy !req
196. How long is it gonna be in there?Copy !req
197. Just about a half an hour.Copy !req
198. You know, I've been thinking, Barris.Copy !req
199. Even if we do get a pure gram of cocaine
out of this deal...Copy !req
200. I don't wanna use it on Donna
to get in her pants.Copy !req
201. - That'd be like buying her.
- No, it'd be an exchange.Copy !req
202. You give her a gift,
and she gives you one.Copy !req
203. Besides, we're talking about
Bob's girl here.Copy !req
204. And this is his house. He's my friend.Copy !req
205. He lets you and Luck-man live here.Copy !req
206. There's a great deal about Bob Arctor
you're not aware of.Copy !req
207. How did New Path rig it?Copy !req
208. They're the one place in our entire country
that can't be scanned.Copy !req
209. All the rest of us can be tracked
24 hours a day...Copy !req
210. but no, not at New Path.Copy !req
211. Hey, that's their contract
with the government.Copy !req
212. But I think you're right, it would be
a good place for a dealer to hide.Copy !req
213. What about Donna Hawthorne?Copy !req
214. I'm systematically working up
to her supplier.Copy !req
215. The quantities I'm buying now
are basically beyond her capacity.Copy !req
216. She doesn't have
enough front money to handle it.Copy !req
217. Matter of time before she's hooking me up
with the next person up the ladder.Copy !req
218. I think soon we'll have somebody
who knows something...Copy !req
219. and they'll be worth busting.Copy !req
220. What about Jim Barris and Ernie Luck-man?Copy !req
221. Same shit. Nothing new.Copy !req
222. Well, what about Charles Freck
and Robert Arctor?Copy !req
223. - Up to pretty much the same old thing.
- Even Arctor?Copy !req
224. Arctor?Copy !req
225. Yeah, he doesn't seem to be doing much.Copy !req
226. Still working his nowhere,
Handy Brake and Tire job.Copy !req
227. Drops a few caps of Death
cut with meth during the day.Copy !req
228. I'm not so sure.Copy !req
229. We just got a tip in from an informant...Copy !req
230. that Arctor has funds
above and beyond...Copy !req
231. what he gets from his little job.Copy !req
232. And when we checked into it...Copy !req
233. we found he wasn't even
working there full-time.Copy !req
234. Yeah.Copy !req
235. Who's this informant?Copy !req
236. We don't know.Copy !req
237. Undoubtedly it's a vengeance burn.
That's how these druggies are.Copy !req
238. I mean, phoning in on each other
every time they get pissed off.Copy !req
239. Anyhow, as of now...Copy !req
240. I'm officially assigning you
to observe Arctor.Copy !req
241. If we're ever gonna get to the bottom
of this, it'll be through this guy.Copy !req
242. So will that mean
full-time viewer recording?Copy !req
243. We got no choice.Copy !req
244. We'll install a new
holographic scanning system.Copy !req
245. You'll let us know
when they're out of the house.Copy !req
246. We'll want storage and printout
on everything.Copy !req
247. Total, total, total, totally,
total, total, total providence.Copy !req
248. I am walking home,
I find myself on a street I am rarely on...Copy !req
249. and look what I obtain for a mere $50.Copy !req
250. - What is it?
- Oh, this would be an 18-speed bike...Copy !req
251. of the all-terrain variety.Copy !req
252. I noticed it in a neighbor's yard,
and I inquired as to its availability.Copy !req
253. They had four of them.
So I made a cash offer.Copy !req
254. - Don't. Drugs.
- Fifty dollars. They acquiesced.Copy !req
255. They threw in these
lemon-yellow racing pants.Copy !req
256. Even hoisted it over the fence for me,
which I found to be very neighborly.Copy !req
257. Well, that's weird. I didn't know you could
get a 18-speed bike nearly new for $50.Copy !req
258. It's amazing what you can get for $50.Copy !req
259. I'll give you 60 right now,
no questions asked.Copy !req
260. You know,
this bike looks a lot like the bike...Copy !req
261. that this girl that lives across the
street had that got ripped off a month ago.Copy !req
262. This bike could be hot.Copy !req
263. They probably jacked it,
these hoister friends of yours.Copy !req
264. Sure did, if they've got four
and selling it that cheap.Copy !req
265. Right? You should at least show it to her
so she could see if it's hers.Copy !req
266. Yeah. Okay, I can do that...Copy !req
267. but this is a boy's bike, okay?
So it can't be.Copy !req
268. Not to invalidate your intuition,
but it's not possible. Thank you.Copy !req
269. Why do you say it's an 18-speed
when it only has nine gears?Copy !req
270. Huh, what?Copy !req
271. Yeah. Yeah. Six right here,
three at the other end of the chain.Copy !req
272. Six plus three equals nine.Copy !req
273. - It's a nine-speed bike.
- Yeah, but even a nine-speed bike...Copy !req
274. for 50 bucks. He still got a good deal.Copy !req
275. Okay, those guys told me
it was 18 speeds.Copy !req
276. I just got Greeked. I just got...Copy !req
277. Wait. Wait.Copy !req
278. Now I count eight.Copy !req
279. Six here and then two in the front.Copy !req
280. - That makes eight.
- What do you think happened...Copy !req
281. - to the missing gears?
- Think? I know.Copy !req
282. They were working
on it, these gypsy grifters...Copy !req
283. with improper tools,
no technical knowledge.Copy !req
284. No understanding of reverse engineering.Copy !req
285. When they attempted to reassemble it,
they panicked.Copy !req
286. They left nine orphan gears there
on the floor.Copy !req
287. They're still there
on the garage floor.Copy !req
288. Let's just go rescue
the orphan gears, dude!Copy !req
289. Don't you see that that's part of the plan?Copy !req
290. They're going to try to sell them to me,
not give them...Copy !req
291. as they rightfully should have as included
in a part of the original sale price.Copy !req
292. Oh, my God, there's no telling
what else they've bait-and-switched.Copy !req
293. Yeah, but if all of us go together,
oh, they'll give them back.Copy !req
294. Oh, you bet they will.
Oh, you bet they will.Copy !req
295. - Let's just go as a team, okay.
- Wait. Wait, wait, wait.Copy !req
296. Are you sure there are only nine gears
on this bike?Copy !req
297. - Eight.
- Okay, eight, nine, whatever.Copy !req
298. Don't you think that before we go over
and accuse, and start some shit...Copy !req
299. we should find out for sure?Copy !req
300. Right, Donna.
Who do we know who's an authority...Copy !req
301. on this type of bi...?Copy !req
302. Get off me!Copy !req
303. Let me...Copy !req
304. We are all way too close to this.Copy !req
305. There's only one thing we can do...Copy !req
306. to thwart these albino,
shape-shifting lizard bitches.Copy !req
307. We are gonna take this outside,
ask the first person we see.Copy !req
308. Introduce some novelty.
That way we get an objective viewpoint.Copy !req
309. Yeah.Copy !req
310. By the way, I might take you up
on that $60 offer.Copy !req
311. No, that was for an 18-speed.Copy !req
312. You know, for this, 18 minus 10,
I'll give you 23.75.Copy !req
313. Are you certain
that's the right math on that?Copy !req
314. Come in.Copy !req
315. You are Officer Fred?Copy !req
316. - Yes.
- Have a seat, please.Copy !req
317. All right, Fred.Copy !req
318. We're going to administer
several tests...Copy !req
319. and there will be no
physical discomfort involved.Copy !req
320. If this is about the
speech I gave to the...Copy !req
321. What this is about
stems from a recent departmental survey...Copy !req
322. showing that undercover agents
have been admitted...Copy !req
323. to neural-aphasia clinics
during the last month.Copy !req
324. You're conscious of the high factor
of addictiveness of Substance D?Copy !req
325. - Of course I am.
- Of course, these tests in no way pertain...Copy !req
326. to the addictive properties
of Substance D, but to...Copy !req
327. Well, let's start
with the set-ground test first.Copy !req
328. Within the apparently meaningless lines
is an object that we would all recognize.Copy !req
329. You are to tell me what that object is
and point to it in the total field.Copy !req
330. In many of those taking Substance D...Copy !req
331. a split between the right and the left
hemisphere of the brain occurs...Copy !req
332. which results in a defect within both
the percept and cognitive systems.Copy !req
333. Although apparently the cognitive
continues to function normally.Copy !req
334. You located the familiar object
in this drawing?Copy !req
335. It should just jump right out at you.Copy !req
336. I see a Coke bottle.Copy !req
337. A soda-pop bottle is correct.Copy !req
338. Was it in the speech I gave?Copy !req
339. Maybe it seemed I showed
a little bilateral dysfunction there.Copy !req
340. I mean, might have seemed
a little slushed.Copy !req
341. Are you getting any cross-chatter?Copy !req
342. - What?
- Cross-chatter between hemispheres.Copy !req
343. If there's damage to
the left hemisphere...Copy !req
344. where the linguistic skills
are located...Copy !req
345. then sometimes the right hemisphere
will fill in to the best of its ability.Copy !req
346. I don't know.
I mean, not that I'm aware of.Copy !req
347. What do you see in this second picture?Copy !req
348. A sheep.Copy !req
349. Show me the sheep.Copy !req
350. An impairment of set-background
discrimination...Copy !req
351. can get you into a heap of trouble.Copy !req
352. Instead of perceiving no forms,
you perceive faulty forms.Copy !req
353. So there is no sheep here, is there?Copy !req
354. Was I close?Copy !req
355. This is not a Rorschach test,
where some abstract blot...Copy !req
356. can be interpreted many ways
by many subjects.Copy !req
357. This has one specific object.Copy !req
358. In this case, a dog.Copy !req
359. A dog.Copy !req
360. What's that mean,
that I saw a sheep instead?Copy !req
361. Who knows.
Only after the entire set has been run...Copy !req
362. - can we determine...
- Why this is superior to the Rorschach...Copy !req
363. is it's not interpretive.Copy !req
364. There are many wrongs,
but there is only one right.Copy !req
365. You either get it or you don't.Copy !req
366. And if you show a run of not getting it...Copy !req
367. then we have a fix on
a functional impairment...Copy !req
368. and we dry you out for a while,
until you test better later on.Copy !req
369. At New Path?Copy !req
370. - Undoubtedly.
- Undoubtedly.Copy !req
371. Now, what do you see in this drawing...Copy !req
372. among these particular
black-and-white lines?Copy !req
373. Plastic dog shit.Copy !req
374. The little kind you can buy
and put in someone's bed.Copy !req
375. Can I go now?Copy !req
376. You know, Fred, if you keep
your sense of humor like you do...Copy !req
377. you just might make it after all.Copy !req
378. Make it. Make what?Copy !req
379. The team? The girl?Copy !req
380. Make good? Make do?Copy !req
381. Make out? Make sense?
Make money? Make time?Copy !req
382. Define your terms.Copy !req
383. The Latin for "make" is facere...Copy !req
384. which always reminds me of fuckere...Copy !req
385. which is Latin for "to fuck."Copy !req
386. And I haven't been getting shit
in that department lately.Copy !req
387. If you guys are psychologist-types...Copy !req
388. and you've been monitoring
my endless debriefings with Hank, tell me:Copy !req
389. What the hell is Donna's deal?Copy !req
390. What do I do? I mean...Copy !req
391. how do you make it with that kind of
sweet, unique, stubborn little chick?Copy !req
392. You could buy her flowers.Copy !req
393. Really?Copy !req
394. This time of year, you can get
little blue flowers at any nursery.Copy !req
395. Give them to her.Copy !req
396. Yeah.Copy !req
397. Hey, Fred, glad you could make it.Copy !req
398. This is the informant who phoned in about
Bob Arctor, and I mentioned him.Copy !req
399. - Yes.
- Anyway, he phoned in again...Copy !req
400. and we challenged him to step forth
and identify himself.Copy !req
401. Do you know this man?Copy !req
402. Sure do.Copy !req
403. You're James Barris, aren't you?Copy !req
404. So, Mr. Barris, what's your information?Copy !req
405. I have evidence that Mr. Arctor is part of
a covert terrorist drug organization.Copy !req
406. They are well-funded and they have
arsenals of weapons at their disposal.Copy !req
407. And what is this organization?Copy !req
408. I believe it to be political in nature
and very much against this country.Copy !req
409. An enemy of the U.S.Copy !req
410. Can you give us any specific names of
anyone else in this organization...Copy !req
411. persons Arctor meets with?Copy !req
412. Yes. Miss Donna Hawthorne.Copy !req
413. On a variety of pretexts, he will go
over to her place of residence...Copy !req
414. and colludes with her regularly,
I've noticed.Copy !req
415. Colludes.Copy !req
416. - Colludes.
- What do you mean?Copy !req
417. Well, I've followed him in my own car
without his knowledge.Copy !req
418. - He goes there often.
- Yes, as often as...Copy !req
419. - She is his girl.
- Right.Copy !req
420. - Mr. Arctor also seemingly...
- Hold up, hold up.Copy !req
421. You think there's anything to this, Fred?Copy !req
422. I think we should definitely
look at his evidence.Copy !req
423. All right. Bring in your evidence.Copy !req
424. All of it. We want names most of all.Copy !req
425. Now, have you seen
Mr. Arctor involved...Copy !req
426. in any large quantities of drugs?Copy !req
427. To be certain.
And I have carefully taken samples...Copy !req
428. Again, without his knowledge.Copy !req
429. When the opportunity presented itself,
strictly for you to analyze.Copy !req
430. - I can bring those in as well.
- Great.Copy !req
431. Is there anything else
you wish to state at this time?Copy !req
432. There is. Mr. Arctor is an addict.
He is addicted to Substance D.Copy !req
433. And I fear that his mind has become
deranged over time...Copy !req
434. and he is now officially
to be considered dangerous.Copy !req
435. - Dangerous.
- Yes. He is having episodes...Copy !req
436. that would occur with
brain damage from Substance D.Copy !req
437. And I'm quite certain, also, that the optic
chiasm has deteriorated somewhat...Copy !req
438. due to a weak ipsilateral component.Copy !req
439. This sort of unsupported speculation,
as I've already warned you, Mr. Barris...Copy !req
440. is completely worthless.Copy !req
441. Now, we'll be sending an officer with you
to gather your evidence.Copy !req
442. - All right?
- May I...?Copy !req
443. An officer out of uniform, of course.Copy !req
444. No, see, I could be murdered.Copy !req
445. As I've already said,
Mr. Arctor has this cache of weapons.Copy !req
446. Mr. Barris, we appreciate this
and the extreme risk you are taking.Copy !req
447. And if it works out, and your information
is valuable in obtaining a conviction...Copy !req
448. - then naturally...
- But that is not the reason I'm here.Copy !req
449. You see, this man is...
He just has a soul sickness.Copy !req
450. His brain is damaged from the use of
this toxic and most terrible substance.Copy !req
451. Nonetheless, the reason I am here is
I feel that I may have certain qualities...Copy !req
452. that would qualify me
to perhaps come over to your side.Copy !req
453. To surrender and come to
the side of law enforcement.Copy !req
454. - I would like an employment application.
- We don't care why you're here.Copy !req
455. We only care whether your evidence and
material amount to anything.Copy !req
456. The rest is your problem.Copy !req
457. Perhaps at the desk
I can get an employment...Copy !req
458. You are about to witness...Copy !req
459. for approximately 61 cents of
ordinary household materials...Copy !req
460. the perfect homemade silencer.Copy !req
461. Barris, the neighbors are gonna hear.Copy !req
462. No, they only call in murders
in this neighborhood.Copy !req
463. Plus, Freckledeck, it's a silencer.
They're not gonna hear anything.Copy !req
464. Well, I'm pretty fucking sure
they're illegal.Copy !req
465. In this day and age, the type of society
we find ourselves living in...Copy !req
466. every person of worth...Copy !req
467. needs to have a gun at all times,
to protect themselves.Copy !req
468. And we're off.Copy !req
469. That sure is some silencer.Copy !req
470. Yes. What it did was augment the sound,
rather than dampen it.Copy !req
471. But I almost have it.
I believe I have it in principle, anyway.Copy !req
472. Oh, well, the good news is,
regardless of what you do next time...Copy !req
473. it'll be a silencer to us,
because we're now deaf!Copy !req
474. What happened?Copy !req
475. How'd I get here?Copy !req
476. Okay, it's your move now.Copy !req
477. Anyone want some popcorn?Copy !req
478. - Yeah.
- Yeah.Copy !req
479. Fuck!Copy !req
480. The pain...Copy !req
481. so unexpected and undeserved...Copy !req
482. had, for some reason,
cleared away the cobwebs.Copy !req
483. I realized I didn't hate the cabinet door.Copy !req
484. I hated my life, my house, my family...Copy !req
485. - Are you okay, Daddy?
- What happened?Copy !req
486. My backyard...Copy !req
487. my power mower.Copy !req
488. Nothing would ever change.Copy !req
489. Nothing new could ever be expected.Copy !req
490. It had to end, and it did.Copy !req
491. Now in the dark world where I dwell...Copy !req
492. ugly things and surprising things
and sometimes little wondrous things...Copy !req
493. spill out at me constantly...Copy !req
494. and I can count on nothing.Copy !req
495. Medfly, got it.Copy !req
496. - That would be a Thelma Kornford.
- Oh, yeah, Miss Big-Tits.Copy !req
497. If I had known it was harmless...Copy !req
498. - I would have killed it myself.
- I would have killed it myself.Copy !req
499. Thanks for the mammaries.Copy !req
500. She had such beautiful...Copy !req
501. Daddy slowpoke.Copy !req
502. - Oh, get around him, will you?
- You know what to do. Your move.Copy !req
503. That's a big ten-four.Copy !req
504. Got nothing on us.Copy !req
505. - There we go.
- Get a life!Copy !req
506. Okay, Bob, no rush.Copy !req
507. - Not so fast.
- You are flying.Copy !req
508. Decelerate.Copy !req
509. Steady.Copy !req
510. - Decelerate.
- Slow down.Copy !req
511. - Jesus.
- Son of a bitch.Copy !req
512. Come on. Decelerate!Copy !req
513. Let us over.Copy !req
514. It's an emergency.Copy !req
515. We're getting over. Emergency.Copy !req
516. - What the hell was that?
- Jesus fucking Christ.Copy !req
517. What the hell in the hootenanny
was that?Copy !req
518. The return spring
on the throttle cable, or...Copy !req
519. Look, the gas.Copy !req
520. Was it cut or broken?Copy !req
521. Let's give her a look.Copy !req
522. Oh, my...Copy !req
523. It's not the spring. It's the linkage
from the pedal to the carb. See?Copy !req
524. It fell apart, so the gas pedal didn't push
back out when you took your foot off...Copy !req
525. - but doesn't explain why...
- There is a safety override on the carb.Copy !req
526. - When the linkage parts, it's...
- Why'd it part?Copy !req
527. Shouldn't this ring hold the cable in place? I
mean, how could it just come off like that?Copy !req
528. Let's have a look. Let's probe a little.Copy !req
529. All right. This screw has been turned
all the way out, the idle screw.Copy !req
530. So when the linkage parted,
it went the other way. Up instead of down.Copy !req
531. Wait. Now, how could that happen?Copy !req
532. There is no way that that screw...Copy !req
533. could turn itself all the way out
like that accidentally.Copy !req
534. No way.Copy !req
535. Motherfucker! They did it deliberately!Copy !req
536. We almost died!
They almost fucking got us, man!Copy !req
537. To loosen the lock ring
and nut assembly...Copy !req
538. that holds the linkage rods together...Copy !req
539. a special tool would be needed.
Several, in fact.Copy !req
540. It'll take half an hour
to get this back together.Copy !req
541. - I have the tools, though.
- Back at the house.Copy !req
542. Correct. We can always go to
a repair center and borrow theirs...Copy !req
543. or get a tow truck out here.Copy !req
544. Here.Copy !req
545. You know, maybe that's what's
fucking us up, fucking up our brains.Copy !req
546. - We're gonna wind up like Freck soon.
- No.Copy !req
547. Okay, these are for us.Copy !req
548. And I'm going to suggest that you take
several, with the implicit acceptance...Copy !req
549. of the fact that Substance D
cannot screw up an accelerator...Copy !req
550. - or a carb-idle adjustment.
- Yeah, dude. Don't blame the drugs.Copy !req
551. - Come on.
- Well, so much for...Copy !req
552. our great road trip to San Diego, Bob.Copy !req
553. I told you we should have gone
to San Francisco.Copy !req
554. What, like going to San Francisco would not
have caused this problem with the engine?Copy !req
555. Yeah, because when you're going north,
it screws this way.Copy !req
556. When you're going south,
it screws that way.Copy !req
557. If we were in Australia.Copy !req
558. This proves you got somebody
out to get you real bad, Bob.Copy !req
559. I just hope the house is still there
when we get back.Copy !req
560. Yeah, I didn't think of that.Copy !req
561. - I wouldn't worry about it too much.
- You wouldn't?Copy !req
562. Christ, they may have broken in
and ripped off all we got.Copy !req
563. All Bob's got, anyhow.Copy !req
564. What if they stomped the animals?Copy !req
565. Don't worry about it.
I left a little surprise for them.Copy !req
566. What?Copy !req
567. Yes, anyone entering the house while we were
gone today will receive a little surprise.Copy !req
568. Little something I perfected
early this morning.Copy !req
569. What kind of surprise?
It's my house, Jim.Copy !req
570. You should ask me before
you start wiring up my house.Copy !req
571. Why so uptight about
protecting your house from intruders?Copy !req
572. Why would you care?Copy !req
573. I'm just saying, it's my house, that's all.Copy !req
574. You can't start going around
booby-trapping my house.Copy !req
575. Okay, okay. I mean, jeez.
Or as the Germans say, leise...Copy !req
576. which translates to "be cool."
Just be cool.Copy !req
577. So, what did you do?Copy !req
578. If the front door is opened
while we are in absentia...Copy !req
579. thumbnail-sized, auxiliary,
motion-detector...Copy !req
580. digital-memory cameras start recording.Copy !req
581. You should have told me.Copy !req
582. What if they come in through the back door
or the bathroom window...Copy !req
583. like that infamous Beatles' song?Copy !req
584. To increase their chances of entering
via the front door...Copy !req
585. rather than in other
less usual places...Copy !req
586. I, fortuitously,
left the front door unlocked.Copy !req
587. - Suppose they don't know it's unlocked.
- That's why I left a note on the door.Copy !req
588. - You're kidding me.
- No, no. No.Copy !req
589. Yes. But no. But yes.Copy !req
590. Are you bullshitting us or not?Copy !req
591. I just simply never know with you.Copy !req
592. - Is he fucking with us, Bob?
- We'll see when we get back.Copy !req
593. If there's a note on the door and it's
unlocked, we'll know he isn't lying.Copy !req
594. They'd probably take the note down after
ripping off and vandalizing the house...Copy !req
595. and locking the door behind them,
so we don't know.Copy !req
596. We will never know.
It's still that gray area.Copy !req
597. Of course I'm kidding.
Only a psychotic would do that.Copy !req
598. Leave the front door
unlocked with a note on it.Copy !req
599. What'd you write
on the note, Jim?Copy !req
600. I wrote, "Come on in,
the door's unlocked."Copy !req
601. He did it. He really did it.Copy !req
602. This is the only way we'll know
for sure who's been doing this.Copy !req
603. And is that not what is
of primary importance?Copy !req
604. Okay, I'm still gray here.
Now, did you do it or not?Copy !req
605. Is it really that suspenseful?Copy !req
606. - Did you?
- He did it.Copy !req
607. Doesn't matter.
We'll be home shortly.Copy !req
608. - Did you?
- We'll be home presently.Copy !req
609. Well, Barris, I can see you're right.Copy !req
610. This scrupulous covering-over of all the
signs they would've otherwise left...Copy !req
611. testifies to their thoroughness.Copy !req
612. You're an idiot.Copy !req
613. Oh, wait, wait. This... What's that?Copy !req
614. Come here, come here.
Look at this, look at this.Copy !req
615. A still-hot cigarette butt. It sure is.
Wait a second.Copy !req
616. They lit a joint
while they were here, Bob.Copy !req
617. Fuck it. Barris is right,
there was somebody here.Copy !req
618. This roach is still hot, smell it.Copy !req
619. Yes. And that roach may not have
been left here by accident.Copy !req
620. This evidence may not be a slip-up.Copy !req
621. - So, what now?
- Maybe they were here specifically...Copy !req
622. to plant drugs in the house.Copy !req
623. Setting us up,
then "phoning in a tip" later.Copy !req
624. It could be in the phone,
the wall outlets.Copy !req
625. We have to go through this house
and get it absolutely clean...Copy !req
626. before they phone us in,
unless they already have.Copy !req
627. We might only have minutes.Copy !req
628. You check the wall sockets.Copy !req
629. - I'll tear this phone apart.
- Wait, hold on.Copy !req
630. - If they see us scrambling before the raid...
- What raid?Copy !req
631. If we're frantically
trying to flush their drugs...Copy !req
632. we can't allege, though true,
we didn't know they were here.Copy !req
633. They're going to find us holding them,
or maybe that's part of the plan.Copy !req
634. Shit, shit, shit.Copy !req
635. We can't do anything.
We're fucked, man. Fuck.Copy !req
636. - Fucked, man!
- Barris...Copy !req
637. what about the super-secret
surveillance cameras?Copy !req
638. - The what?
- The doodads, man.Copy !req
639. Oh, yes, of course. Right, of course.
How could I have forgotten?Copy !req
640. This should be extremely informational
at this point.Copy !req
641. I believe this will tell us a great deal.Copy !req
642. Although it probably wouldn't have
proven to be that important.Copy !req
643. Let me guess: didn't record.Copy !req
644. Allow me to suggest that it's highly likely
that the tow truck was bugged...Copy !req
645. thus affording them ample time and
opportunity to deploy an operative...Copy !req
646. to diffuse and otherwise erase
the evidence obtained.Copy !req
647. But we have no other recourse,
in view of their evasive tactics.Copy !req
648. I mean, there is, of course, one thing you
could do, Bob, although it would take time.Copy !req
649. Sell the house and move out?Copy !req
650. But hell, this is our home.Copy !req
651. You could make a profit.Copy !req
652. On the other hand, you might have to
take a loss on a quick sale.Copy !req
653. I know a good realtor.Copy !req
654. What reason should I give for selling?
They always ask.Copy !req
655. Can't tell the truth.
You shouldn't tell the truth...Copy !req
656. Why can't we tell the truth?Copy !req
657. We put an ad in the L.A. Times.Copy !req
658. Modern, three-bedroom tract house...Copy !req
659. with two bathrooms
for easy and fast flushing...Copy !req
660. high-grade drugs stashed throughout
all rooms, included in sale price.Copy !req
661. It could actually increase the value.Copy !req
662. But they might call and ask
what kind of drugs are stashed...Copy !req
663. and we don't know,
it could be anything.Copy !req
664. Prospective buyers might inquire
as to the quantity.Copy !req
665. And we don't know at this point.Copy !req
666. It could be ounces of weed or pounds of
heroin, or hits of E or killer caps of D.Copy !req
667. Hey, you guys.Copy !req
668. Fuck! Jesus.Copy !req
669. What the fuck is wrong with you?Copy !req
670. I came in, like the note said.Copy !req
671. It didn't say when
you were gonna get back, so I just...Copy !req
672. I just sat around for a while
and ended up crashing.Copy !req
673. - Love your sweater.
- Just... Don't touch me.Copy !req
674. Man, you guys were
making so much noise.Copy !req
675. - Sorry.
- It woke me up.Copy !req
676. Did you smoke a joint
before you crashed?Copy !req
677. Yeah.Copy !req
678. Otherwise, I can't ever sleep.Copy !req
679. You know,
you guys should seriously think about...Copy !req
680. maybe locking the doors
when you leave.Copy !req
681. Otherwise you could get ripped off
and it'd be your own fault.Copy !req
682. This is all your fault.Copy !req
683. Did I hear you say
you were gonna sell the house?Copy !req
684. Or was that, you know, me dreaming?Copy !req
685. Because what I heard sounded weird.Copy !req
686. Yeah, we're all dreaming.Copy !req
687. Quiet. Steady. Steady.Copy !req
688. Kidney. Kidney. Kidney.Copy !req
689. So the information from the holo scanners
installed in Arctor's house...Copy !req
690. are transmitted back here,
to station 12-879.Copy !req
691. This'll be your new
home away from home, pal.Copy !req
692. It's pretty intuitive.Copy !req
693. You'll just be watching and
scanning through recorded information.Copy !req
694. You can go live, of course,
but that tends to be excruciatingly boring.Copy !req
695. And then, you see
where these holos are placed?Copy !req
696. What would be great is if they ever
need servicing or changing out...Copy !req
697. you could do that yourself
while no one else is around.Copy !req
698. But wouldn't you then see me
on the tapes doing that?Copy !req
699. No. For that, you just edit yourself out.Copy !req
700. But be sure to include yourself
in the tapes from time to time...Copy !req
701. because if you systematically
edit yourself out...Copy !req
702. we can deduce who you are through
the process of elimination...Copy !req
703. whether we want to or not.Copy !req
704. I'm not sure I exactly...Copy !req
705. We take it for granted that you are
one of the individuals...Copy !req
706. that are in Arctor's circle of roommates
and friends that frequent the house.Copy !req
707. I mean, undoubtedly, you're either
Jim Barris or Ernie Luck-man...Copy !req
708. Charles Freck...Copy !req
709. even Arctor himself.Copy !req
710. Hell, you could be Donna,
for all I know.Copy !req
711. As my superior,
I figure you'd know all this stuff.Copy !req
712. How the hell would I know?Copy !req
713. I'm just a little guy behind a big desk.Copy !req
714. You'd have to go way up the food chain
to access that kind of info.Copy !req
715. You know, instead of me
doing any maintenance...Copy !req
716. send someone to the house
once a month, in uniform...Copy !req
717. and have him say, "Good morning.Copy !req
718. I'm here to service the monitoring devices
covertly installed on your premises."Copy !req
719. Maybe that sucker Arctor
would even pick up the bill.Copy !req
720. Actually, I think Arctor would probably
kill the guy and then disappear.Copy !req
721. If it's proven that Arctor is,
in fact, hiding that much.Copy !req
722. Believe me, Arctor is hiding a great deal.Copy !req
723. We've got more recent
information on him analyzed...Copy !req
724. and there's no doubt about it,
he's a ringer.Copy !req
725. A three-dollar bill. The guy is a phony.Copy !req
726. So keep on him until he drops...Copy !req
727. until we have enough to arrest him
and make it stick.Copy !req
728. You think he's high up in the,
you know, Substance D network?Copy !req
729. What we think is of
no importance to your work.Copy !req
730. You report your limited conclusions,
and we evaluate.Copy !req
731. - You got it?
- Okay, okay.Copy !req
732. I got it.Copy !req
733. I'd say Arctor is doomed
if he's up to something.Copy !req
734. And I have a hunch,
from what you're saying, that he is.Copy !req
735. The idling jets could be replaced with
smaller jets that would compensate.Copy !req
736. And with a tach, he could just watch

737. Usually just backing off
on the gas pedal...Copy !req
738. causes it to upshift
if the automatic linkage doesn't.Copy !req
739. What are you grease monkeys up to?Copy !req
740. Bob's got a bent choke shaft.Copy !req
741. - How much does this Impala weigh?
- Weighs about 1000 pounds.Copy !req
742. Thousand pounds traveling at
80 miles per hour builds up a force of...Copy !req
743. That's 1000 pounds with passengers in it
and a full tank of gas.Copy !req
744. - For a fact? Okay.
- How many passengers?Copy !req
745. - Twelve.
- Six in the front, six in the back.Copy !req
746. No, that's 11 in the back
and the driver sitting alone in the front.Copy !req
747. Extra weight on the rear wheels
is to keep from fishtailing.Copy !req
748. - We talking about 1250-pound passengers?
- Kids' soccer team.Copy !req
749. Now, is that metal or plastic cleats?Copy !req
750. - Metal cleats for safety.
- Okay, my computations are complete.Copy !req
751. You are just heckle tweak,
but you are bug-bite squared.Copy !req
752. - What kind of bug?
- About-to-get-fucked-up-bitch beetle.Copy !req
753. - Hey, come on. Cool it, you guys.
- Tell me...Copy !req
754. Step back. Freck-and-frack,
Ernie's on the attack.Copy !req
755. - What is this?
- Come on.Copy !req
756. - I'm desperately afraid.
- I'm gonna knock your nads...Copy !req
757. up into your nostrils
for talking to your betters that way.Copy !req
758. All right.
I'm a technician, you're an interloper.Copy !req
759. You are constitutionally incapable
of not shutting the fuck up.Copy !req
760. - Bring it!
- Shut the fuck up!Copy !req
761. No, no, proctology boy,
I'm coming after you.Copy !req
762. Shut it. Hey. Hey.Copy !req
763. I have the perfect tool for this job.Copy !req
764. - I was only kidding him.
- Fuck.Copy !req
765. Fuck!Copy !req
766. What if he goes in there
and he gets his gun and his silencer?Copy !req
767. I'm leaving.
This place has become unsafe.Copy !req
768. No, hey, hey, Freck. No, come on.
You're a bro, man. Stick around.Copy !req
769. What's the hammer for, Barris?Copy !req
770. No, I just saw it inside and thought I,
you know, should bring it along with me.Copy !req
771. - Same with this.
- You ready?Copy !req
772. Yeah, what do you want?Copy !req
773. - Come on, hammerhead.
- Shut up.Copy !req
774. - Make a move.
- Don't like it.Copy !req
775. Okay. If you guys are gonna
kill each other, I'm splitting.Copy !req
776. - It's getting very fucked up over here.
- Hey, Freck.Copy !req
777. The most dangerous kind of person
is the one who's afraid of his own shadow.Copy !req
778. - What is that supposed to mean?
- I'll tell you.Copy !req
779. It means that if you take
too much of that stuff...Copy !req
780. you not only start seeing
bugs all over...Copy !req
781. but you start talking like... and
no one can understand you.Copy !req
782. What'd you say, Barris?
I didn't understand.Copy !req
783. See, you guys are fucked up.Copy !req
784. No, no, it is y-uck-uck-ou
that are fuck-ucked-ed up.Copy !req
785. Hey, go Freck yourself.Copy !req
786. Don't take the car, you'll kill yourself.Copy !req
787. So this guy's been going around claiming
to be a world-famous impostor, right?Copy !req
788. Says he's posed, at one time or another,
as a surgeon at John Hopkins...Copy !req
789. as a theoretical,
submolecular, high-velocity...Copy !req
790. particle-research physicist
on a federal grant at Harvard...Copy !req
791. as a Finnish novelist
who won the Nobel Prize for literature...Copy !req
792. as a deposed Argentinean president...Copy !req
793. who was married to a go-go dancer
from Chicago...Copy !req
794. He got away with all that?Copy !req
795. - He never got caught?
- Okay, you broke my flow...Copy !req
796. so now I guess I'll just have
to segue down to the near.Copy !req
797. That's just it.
You see, he didn't pose as any of those.Copy !req
798. He just posed as
a world-famous impostor. Yeah.Copy !req
799. It came out later in the L.A. Times.Copy !req
800. They checked up, and he was pushing
a broom at Disneyland or something.Copy !req
801. He saw that old DiCaprio movie.Copy !req
802. You know, the one where
he plays a world-famous impostor...Copy !req
803. before Leonardo hit his Elvis stage.Copy !req
804. And his first thought was:Copy !req
805. "Hey, I could pose as all those exotic guys
and get away with it."Copy !req
806. But then, his next thought was,
"Hell, why bother?Copy !req
807. I could just pose as an impostor,
and it'd be a lot easier."Copy !req
808. They say that he made more money
than the actual impostor...Copy !req
809. although I'm not sure
if they'd adjust for inflation.Copy !req
810. Well, you know,
we all see impostors now and then...Copy !req
811. but not posing
as subatomic physicists.Copy !req
812. Oh, as a narc, you mean.Copy !req
813. What's a narc look like?Copy !req
814. That's like asking,
"What's an impostor look like?"Copy !req
815. I talked to this dealer
who'd been busted.Copy !req
816. I asked him what the narc
who busted him looked like.Copy !req
817. What did he say, he looked just like us?Copy !req
818. More so.Copy !req
819. So I guess the moral of that is...Copy !req
820. stay away from guys
looking the same as us.Copy !req
821. Well, there are female narcs.Copy !req
822. Oh, hey, I'd like to meet one of those.Copy !req
823. No, I don't mean a female. I mean
just the narc, knowingly, like, positive.Copy !req
824. Sure. So you could positively know.
And you will.Copy !req
825. When he slaps the cuffs on,
you'll know for sure, when that day comes.Copy !req
826. How could a guy do that?Copy !req
827. Pose as a narc?Copy !req
828. - What?
- What?Copy !req
829. Pose as a narc?Copy !req
830. - No, you said it. So yeah.
- Pose as a narc.Copy !req
831. Oh, sh... Shit, I'm spaced.Copy !req
832. Pose as a narc, wow.Copy !req
833. Pose as a narc.Copy !req
834. My brains are scrambled today.Copy !req
835. Christ, Barris, what the fuck?Copy !req
836. Yes, hi. How are you?Copy !req
837. I have something
somewhat emergent to report.Copy !req
838. I don't know if I should be summoning
the inhalator squad...Copy !req
839. or the resuscitation squad.Copy !req
840. Yes, ma'am?Copy !req
841. I don't know. I don't want to say
it's not cardiac arrest...Copy !req
842. but it's either that or an involuntary
asphyxiation of a bolus within the...Copy !req
843. The address, yes.
The address is simple...Copy !req
844. although I've never sent myself
a piece of mail here.Copy !req
845. Seven... Seven... Seven-zero-niner.
Street? Is the street relevant?Copy !req
846. - Come on.
- Tell you this much, it is a cul-de-sac.Copy !req
847. Does that technically qualify as a street?Copy !req
848. I'm pleased to report we won't be needing
your assistance after all.Copy !req
849. Thank you. Have a nice day.Copy !req
850. There you go. Took care of itself.Copy !req
851. - Okay.
- Oh, Jesus.Copy !req
852. You all right? There you go.Copy !req
853. I must've passed out.Copy !req
854. - Yeah.
- Well, you... I was dreaming.Copy !req
855. - Must have almost died.
- Yeah.Copy !req
856. Shit.Copy !req
857. And what were you doing while
I was being escorted by dead relatives...Copy !req
858. to the bright light? Jacking off?Copy !req
859. No, no, no. You saw me.
I was on the phone.Copy !req
860. I summoned the paramedics.Copy !req
861. - I sprung into action without delay.
- Bullshit. You were cleaning your pipe.Copy !req
862. I was wrapping my pipe.
You were unconscious.Copy !req
863. You the only person in the universe
who never heard of the Heimlich maneuver?Copy !req
864. All right,
I'm gonna give you a little feedback...Copy !req
865. since you seem to be proceeding
through life like a cat without whiskers...Copy !req
866. perpetually caught
behind the refrigerator.Copy !req
867. Your life and watching you live it...Copy !req
868. is like a gag reel
of ineffective bodily functions.Copy !req
869. I swear to God that a toddler
has a better understanding...Copy !req
870. of the intricacies of chew, swallow, digest,
don't kill yourself on your TV dinner.Copy !req
871. And yet, you've managed
to turn this near-death fuck-up of yours...Copy !req
872. into a moral referendum on me.Copy !req
873. - You are a monster!
- Oh, fuck.Copy !req
874. - You are a billy goat.
- A sick, depraved un...Copy !req
875. Charles Freck, becoming progressively
more and more depressed...Copy !req
876. by what was happening around him,
decided finally to off himself.Copy !req
877. There was no problem
in the circles where he hung out...Copy !req
878. in putting an end to yourself.Copy !req
879. You just bought a large quantity of downers
and took them with cheap wine.Copy !req
880. The planning part had to do
with the artifacts...Copy !req
881. he wanted found on him
by later archeologists.Copy !req
882. He had spent several days deciding...Copy !req
883. much longer than he had spent
deciding to kill himself.Copy !req
884. He would be found lying on his back
on his bed...Copy !req
885. with a copy of Ayn Rand's
The Fountainhead...Copy !req
886. and an unfinished letter to Exxon...Copy !req
887. protesting the cancellation
of his gas credit card.Copy !req
888. That way, he would indict the system
and achieve something by his death...Copy !req
889. over and above
what the death itself achieved.Copy !req
890. At the last moment,
he changed his mind on a decisive issue...Copy !req
891. and decided to drink the pills
with a connoisseur wine...Copy !req
892. instead of Ripple or Thunderbird.Copy !req
893. So he set off on one last drive,
over to Tiny's Liquors...Copy !req
894. which specialized in fine wines...Copy !req
895. and bought a bottle
of 2001 Azalea Springs Merlot...Copy !req
896. which set him back almost $70.Copy !req
897. Back home again, he uncorked the wine, let
it breathe, drank a few glasses of it...Copy !req
898. and tried to think
of something meaningful, but could not.Copy !req
899. And then, with a glass of Merlot,
gulped down all the pills at once.Copy !req
900. However, he had been burned.Copy !req
901. Instead of quietly suffocating,
Charles Freck began to hallucinate.Copy !req
902. The next thing he knew,
a creature from between dimensions...Copy !req
903. was standing beside his bed,
looking down at him disapprovingly.Copy !req
904. You're gonna read me my sins?Copy !req
905. It's gonna take 100,000 hours?Copy !req
906. Your sins will be read to you ceaselessly,
in shifts, throughout eternity.Copy !req
907. The list will never end.Copy !req
908. "The Sins of Freck."Copy !req

922. Why can't we stop it?Copy !req
923. The bigger this war gets,
the more freedoms we lose...Copy !req
924. the more Substance D
is on our streets.Copy !req
925. Can't you figure this out?Copy !req
926. Look around you.
Look how far we've come.Copy !req
927. Humanity wasn't meant to live like this.Copy !req
928. Our every waking moment
tracked and traced and scanned.Copy !req
929. It's time to stop
submitting to this tyranny.Copy !req
930. It's time to realize
that we're being enslaved.Copy !req
931. It's our tax dollars at work.
Protect us from ourselves.Copy !req
932. Hey, guys, I used to be one of you.Copy !req
933. Stop selling out your own species.Copy !req
934. Hey. Get in.Copy !req
935. You scared me.Copy !req
936. Got something for you.Copy !req
937. I'm seeing some crazy shit tonight.Copy !req
938. What do you mean?Copy !req
939. That fucking Barris.Copy !req
940. You know how he works?Copy !req
941. He doesn't kill anybody...Copy !req
942. but he hangs around until
the situation arises where they die.Copy !req
943. And then he just sits there.Copy !req
944. And he sort of sets them up in the
first place while he stays out of it.Copy !req
945. But I'm not sure how.Copy !req
946. Hey, do you have that money for the stuff?
I need it tonight.Copy !req
947. - Yeah. I have it.
- Okay.Copy !req
948. You know, I don't like Barris.Copy !req
949. And I don't trust him.Copy !req
950. Guy's fucking crazy.Copy !req
951. And when you're around him,
you start acting crazy.Copy !req
952. And then when you're not around him,
you're fine.Copy !req
953. You're acting crazy now.Copy !req
954. - I am?
- Yes.Copy !req
955. Hey, will you take me to a concert
next weekend at Anaheim Stadium?Copy !req
956. Sure.Copy !req
957. - Yeah?
- Yeah.Copy !req
958. Yeah. Which night?Copy !req
959. It's Sunday afternoon.Copy !req
960. Whatever you want.Copy !req
961. Well, I'll just drive over to my place.Copy !req
962. You have the money,
you'll give it to me.Copy !req
963. We'll kick back, drop some Death...Copy !req
964. maybe get some tequila.Copy !req
965. All right.Copy !req
966. Hey, Donna, do you like cats?Copy !req
967. Drippy little things.Copy !req
968. Moving along
about a foot above the ground.Copy !req
969. Above?Copy !req
970. You mean, on the ground?Copy !req
971. Just dripping...Copy !req
972. behind furniture.Copy !req
973. Little spring flowers with blue in them
that come up first.Copy !req
974. Yeah.Copy !req
975. - Before the...
- Before someone stomps on them...Copy !req
976. and they're all gone.Copy !req
977. It's like you know me.Copy !req
978. You can read me.Copy !req
979. Can I put my arms around you?Copy !req
980. - I wanna hug you, okay?
- No.Copy !req
981. - What?
- Look, I do a lot of coke, okay?Copy !req
982. I just have to be really careful
because I do a lot of coke.Copy !req
983. So just leave my body alone, okay?Copy !req
984. Okay.Copy !req
985. Sure.Copy !req
986. Yeah.Copy !req
987. You know, fuck it.Copy !req
988. Hey, I... I'm sorry.Copy !req
989. I just don't like it
when people grope my body...Copy !req
990. and I have to watch out for that
because I snort so much coke.Copy !req
991. That's fucking lame. I gotta go.Copy !req
992. Your car's not fixed.Copy !req
993. I drove you here, I'll drive you back.Copy !req
994. Bob.Copy !req
995. Bob, wait.Copy !req
996. Please.Copy !req
997. Please wait.Copy !req
998. I didn't mean... I'm sorry,
I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.Copy !req
999. I'm just... I'm so out of it right now.Copy !req
1000. I... Sometimes after I've worked
really hard all day, I...Copy !req
1001. Please, come back.Copy !req
1002. Come on. With the tequila.Copy !req
1003. How much do you do?Copy !req
1004. Not that much.
And I don't shoot up.Copy !req
1005. I never have and I never will. I...Copy !req
1006. Once you start shooting,
you got like six months, maybe.Copy !req
1007. And even tap water.Copy !req
1008. You get a habit.Copy !req
1009. You have a habit.Copy !req
1010. We all do.Copy !req
1011. I mean, so what? What's the difference?Copy !req
1012. I'm happy.Copy !req
1013. - Aren't you happy?
- Listen to me.Copy !req
1014. I think it's starting to get bad.Copy !req
1015. You know what I wanna do someday, Bob?Copy !req
1016. I wanna move north, live on a farm...Copy !req
1017. near the mountains, in a cabin.Copy !req
1018. Can I go with you?Copy !req
1019. I hope so.Copy !req
1020. All right. You weren't kidding.Copy !req
1021. Do you have a toothbrush?Copy !req
1022. What?Copy !req
1023. Well, screw it. Screw it.Copy !req
1024. Teeth are teeth.Copy !req
1025. I'll... I'll brush them.Copy !req
1026. Know where the bathroom is?Copy !req
1027. What bathroom?Copy !req
1028. In the house.Copy !req
1029. Who are those guys out there?Copy !req
1030. Rolling joints and rattling on and on?Copy !req
1031. They live here with you?Copy !req
1032. Two of them do.Copy !req
1033. So you're gay?Copy !req
1034. Try not to be.
That's why I called you tonight.Copy !req
1035. So you're putting up
a pretty good battle against it.Copy !req
1036. You better believe it.Copy !req
1037. Guess I'm about to find out.Copy !req
1038. If you're a latent gay,
then you'll want me to take the initiative.Copy !req
1039. You want me to undress you?Copy !req
1040. Sure.Copy !req
1041. Oh, Jesus, fuck.Copy !req
1042. Hello?Copy !req
1043. Fred, we've processed
some more recent material on you.Copy !req
1044. How are you feeling?Copy !req
1045. Okay.Copy !req
1046. Any problems?Copy !req
1047. Well, I had a fight with my girl.Copy !req
1048. Any confusion?Copy !req
1049. Are you experiencing any difficulty
identifying persons or objects?Copy !req
1050. Any language disorientation?Copy !req
1051. No.Copy !req
1052. Can you come back over to room 203?Copy !req
1053. What did you find to be a problem?Copy !req
1054. We'll take that up when you get here.Copy !req
1055. Connie.Copy !req
1056. Donna.Copy !req
1057. All right, Fred. Very good.Copy !req
1058. And this next test,
with your eyes covered...Copy !req
1059. reach out and feel an object
with each hand.Copy !req
1060. You are to tell us if the object
presented to your left hand...Copy !req
1061. is identical to the object
presented to your right.Copy !req
1062. One more thing, Fred.Copy !req
1063. We need an updated blood test.Copy !req
1064. So go down the hall to the pathology lab,
and they'll fix you up.Copy !req
1065. And by the time you get back, we should
almost be through with our evaluation.Copy !req
1066. I'll be upstairs with Hank.Copy !req
1067. You certainly seem
much more depressed today...Copy !req
1068. than you did when we first saw you.Copy !req
1069. Pardon?Copy !req
1070. Last week, when we first saw you,
you were kidding and laughing.Copy !req
1071. Did you ever get her the flowers?Copy !req
1072. Crazy job they gave me.Copy !req
1073. But if I wasn't doing it,
someone else would be.Copy !req
1074. And they might get it wrong.Copy !req
1075. They might set Arctor up,
plant drugs on him and collect a reward.Copy !req
1076. Better it be me,
despite the disadvantages.Copy !req
1077. Just protecting everyone from Barris
is justification in itself.Copy !req
1078. What the hell am I talking about?Copy !req
1079. I must be nuts.Copy !req
1080. I know Bob Arctor. He's a good person.Copy !req
1081. He's up to nothing.
At least, nothing too bad.Copy !req
1082. In fact, he works for the Orange County
Sheriff's Office covertly...Copy !req
1083. which is probably why
Barris is after him.Copy !req
1084. But that wouldn't explain...Copy !req
1085. why the Orange County Sheriff's Office
is after him.Copy !req
1086. Something big is definitely
going down in this house.Copy !req
1087. This rundown, rubble-filled house...Copy !req
1088. with its weed-patch yard...Copy !req
1089. and cat box that never gets emptied.Copy !req
1090. What a waste of a truly good house.Copy !req
1091. So much could be done with it.Copy !req
1092. A family and children could live here.Copy !req
1093. It was designed for that.Copy !req
1094. Such a waste.Copy !req
1095. They ought to confiscate it
and put it to better use.Copy !req
1096. I'm supposed to act like they aren't here.Copy !req
1097. Assuming there's a "they" at all.Copy !req
1098. It may just be my imagination.Copy !req
1099. Whatever it is that's watching...Copy !req
1100. it's not human...Copy !req
1101. unlike little dark-eyed Donna.Copy !req
1102. It doesn't ever blink.Copy !req
1103. What does a scanner see?Copy !req
1104. Into the head?Copy !req
1105. Down into the heart?Copy !req
1106. Does it see into me, into us?Copy !req
1107. Clearly or darkly?Copy !req
1108. I hope it sees clearly,
because I can't any longer see into myself.Copy !req
1109. I see only murk.Copy !req
1110. I hope for everyone's sake
the scanners do better.Copy !req
1111. Because if the scanner sees only darkly,
the way I do...Copy !req
1112. then I'm cursed and cursed again.Copy !req
1113. And we'll only wind up dead this way...Copy !req
1114. knowing very little
and getting that little fragment wrong too.Copy !req
1115. You show what we regard...Copy !req
1116. more as competition phenomenon
than impairment.Copy !req
1117. Yeah?Copy !req
1118. Competition between the left and the right
hemispheres of your brain.Copy !req
1119. It's like you have two signals
that interfere with each other...Copy !req
1120. by carrying conflicting information.Copy !req
1121. It's as if you have two fuel gauges
on your car.Copy !req
1122. They're studying
the same amount of fuel...Copy !req
1123. but one says your tank is full,
the other registers empty.Copy !req
1124. They can't both be right.Copy !req
1125. And you as the driver have only an
indirect relationship to the fuel tank...Copy !req
1126. via the gauges.Copy !req
1127. So, what does all this mean?Copy !req
1128. Well, I'm sure you know already.Copy !req
1129. You've been experiencing it
without knowing why or what it is.Copy !req
1130. Two hemispheres of my brain...Copy !req
1131. are competing?Copy !req
1132. - Yes.
- Yes.Copy !req
1133. But why?Copy !req
1134. Substance D.Copy !req
1135. It often causes that, functionally,
and this is what the tests confirm.Copy !req
1136. Damage has taken place
to the normally dominant left hemisphere...Copy !req
1137. and the right hemisphere
is attempting to compensate.Copy !req
1138. Crosscutting, we call it...Copy !req
1139. related to split-brain phenomenon.Copy !req
1140. We could perform
a right hemispherectomy...Copy !req
1141. but I'd...Copy !req
1142. Will this ever go away?Copy !req
1143. Probably. It's a functional impairment.Copy !req
1144. It may be organic damage.Copy !req
1145. It may be permanent.Copy !req
1146. Time will tell, and only after you've
been off Substance D for a long while.Copy !req
1147. I'll never take Substance D again
for the rest of my life.Copy !req
1148. How much are you taking now?Copy !req
1149. Not much.Copy !req
1150. More, recently, because of job stress.Copy !req
1151. Death is swallowed up in victory.Copy !req
1152. Behold, I tell you the sacred secret now:Copy !req
1153. You shall not all sleep in death.Copy !req
1154. We'll do the other half
of Southern California tomorrow night.Copy !req
1155. The Air Force arsenal at Vandenberg
will be hit for automatic weapons...Copy !req
1156. What about that anthrax
Anwar ripped off for us?Copy !req
1157. When do we...? Aren't we supposed to carry
the stuff up to the watershed area...?Copy !req
1158. We need the weapons first.Copy !req
1159. Drugs in the water supply is step B.Copy !req
1160. Okay, but I gotta go. I got a customer.Copy !req
1161. I can also identify
the aforementioned terrorist cell.Copy !req
1162. It's indicated throughout the course
of my observations.Copy !req
1163. Do you have any more material of this sort,
or is this tape substantially it?Copy !req
1164. No, I have a veritable cornucopia...Copy !req
1165. and much of it is directly referencing
the organization and its directives.Copy !req
1166. Who are these people?
What organization?Copy !req
1167. It is primarily Arctor and Hawthorne.Copy !req
1168. I have coded notes here, which may be
of some interest to you.Copy !req
1169. I... My own cryptology
is very difficult to...Copy !req
1170. As of now I'm impounding all of this.Copy !req
1171. It is our property temporarily,
and we will sort through it ourselves.Copy !req
1172. You will be on hand
to explain anything to us...Copy !req
1173. if and when we get to the point
where we feel we need anything explained.Copy !req
1174. Mr. Barris, you will not be released
pending our study of this material.Copy !req
1175. You will be charged, as a formality,
to keep you available...Copy !req
1176. with knowingly giving the authorities
false information.Copy !req
1177. This, of course, is just a pretext
for your own safety.Copy !req
1178. I always wanted to go
to the Galapagos...Copy !req
1179. - Is that satisfactory, Mr. Barris?
- Not entirely.Copy !req
1180. Though I wonder,
when I'm locked down...Copy !req
1181. may I be provided with some lotion,
and perhaps some...?Copy !req
1182. So, what do you think
of Barris' evidence?Copy !req
1183. Seems like what he played...
The little we heard anyway.Copy !req
1184. Sounded pretty genuine to me.Copy !req
1185. It's fake. Worthless.Copy !req
1186. Made on a home computer.Copy !req
1187. Maybe you're right.Copy !req
1188. Is that my medical report you have there?Copy !req
1189. Yep.Copy !req
1190. What does it say?Copy !req
1191. That you're completely bonkers.Copy !req
1192. Completely?Copy !req
1193. There's maybe two brain cells
that still light up.Copy !req
1194. Rest is just...Copy !req
1195. short circuits and sparks.Copy !req
1196. Two?Copy !req
1197. Listen, when you go to pick up
your next paycheck...Copy !req
1198. there will be a substantial difference
this time.Copy !req
1199. I get some sort of bonus for this...?Copy !req
1200. For this having happened to me on duty?Copy !req
1201. No. Read your penal code.Copy !req
1202. "An officer who willingly becomes an addict
and doesn't report it promptly...Copy !req
1203. is subject to a misdemeanor charge...Copy !req
1204. a fine, and/or six months."Copy !req
1205. You'll probably just be fined.Copy !req
1206. Willingly?Copy !req
1207. No one held a gun to your head
and shot you up.Copy !req
1208. No one dropped something in your soup.Copy !req
1209. You knowingly and willingly
took an addictive drug...Copy !req
1210. brain-destructive and disorienting.Copy !req
1211. I had to.Copy !req
1212. You could have pretended to.Copy !req
1213. Most officers manage to cope with it.Copy !req
1214. And from the quantities
you were taking...Copy !req
1215. My God, Fred, I...Copy !req
1216. Hey, you know what I would do
if I were you?Copy !req
1217. Once you get out of New Path and,
you know, it's all over...Copy !req
1218. But it may never be over.Copy !req
1219. Cigarette?Copy !req
1220. I'm getting off that too. Everything.Copy !req
1221. Including chocolate. Yeah.Copy !req
1222. And...Copy !req
1223. Like I tell my kids...Copy !req
1224. I've got two kids. Two girls.Copy !req
1225. Little ones.Copy !req
1226. I don't believe you do.Copy !req
1227. You're not supposed to.Copy !req
1228. Maybe not.Copy !req
1229. Listen, is there anywhere specific
you'd like to go?Copy !req
1230. Maybe over to Donna Hawthorne's place?Copy !req
1231. From the information you brought in,
sounds like you guys are pretty close.Copy !req
1232. Yes, we are.Copy !req
1233. How'd you know that?Copy !req
1234. Process of elimination.Copy !req
1235. I know who you aren't...Copy !req
1236. and we're talking about
a very small group of people...Copy !req
1237. that we hoped would lead us higher.Copy !req
1238. And maybe Barris will.Copy !req
1239. I pieced it together a long time ago
that you're Arctor.Copy !req
1240. I'm who?Copy !req
1241. I'm Bob Arctor?Copy !req
1242. Yeah, get me
Donna Hawthorne's number...Copy !req
1243. or just patch me through
when you locate her.Copy !req
1244. Thanks.Copy !req
1245. Bud, you are in a very bad way,
my friend.Copy !req
1246. Maybe Jim Barris poisoned you.Copy !req
1247. We're really interested in Barris,
not you.Copy !req
1248. The whole scanning of the house
was to keep an eye on him.Copy !req
1249. We hoped to draw him here, and we did.Copy !req
1250. He is deep into it
with some very dangerous people.Copy !req
1251. Then I'm a what?Copy !req
1252. Well, we had to get to Barris
to set him up.Copy !req
1253. So how we arranged it was...Copy !req
1254. he grew progressively
more and more suspicious...Copy !req
1255. that you were an undercover cop trying
to nail him or use him to get high or...Copy !req
1256. So he did what you or anyone
would have done.Copy !req
1257. Hey, Donna.Copy !req
1258. Yeah, hi, this is a buddy of Bob's.
Arctor.Copy !req
1259. Yeah.Copy !req
1260. Listen, he's in a... He's in a bad way.Copy !req
1261. Yeah, way bad.Copy !req
1262. I was wondering if I could
ask a favor of you.Copy !req
1263. You're a sweetheart.Copy !req
1264. Yeah, I'm sure he'll
appreciate it very much.Copy !req
1265. Great, thanks. Good news.Copy !req
1266. Donna Hawthorne said she'd pick you up
out front in about five minutes.Copy !req
1267. You fuckers.Copy !req
1268. You're a good man, Bob.Copy !req
1269. You've been dealt a bad deal.Copy !req
1270. This is not fair, but
it has to be this way.Copy !req
1271. You just...Copy !req
1272. You gotta... You gotta just wait it out,
just get through it.Copy !req
1273. And someday...Copy !req
1274. a long time from now...Copy !req
1275. you'll see the way you saw before.Copy !req
1276. There'll be a recognition...Copy !req
1277. and some spark in a disguised form...Copy !req
1278. will reveal itself to you...Copy !req
1279. and guide you.Copy !req
1280. - Substance D?
- Yeah.Copy !req
1281. Ate his head.Copy !req
1282. Another loser.Copy !req
1283. It's easy to win.Copy !req
1284. Anybody can win.Copy !req
1285. Goodbye.Copy !req
1286. Living and unliving things
are exchanging properties.Copy !req
1287. The drive of unliving things is stronger
than the drive of living things.Copy !req
1288. The living should never be used
to serve the purposes of the dead.Copy !req
1289. But the dead should, if possible...Copy !req
1290. serve the purposes of the living.Copy !req
1291. Hey, good news.Copy !req
1292. I think I got you transferred
to one of our farms.Copy !req
1293. - Can I work with animals?
- I think you'll be working with plants...Copy !req
1294. for a while. In the open,
where you can touch the ground.Copy !req
1295. - I wanna be with something living.
- The ground is living.Copy !req
1296. The earth is still alive.Copy !req
1297. Do you have any agricultural background?Copy !req
1298. I worked in an office.Copy !req
1299. Well, you'll be outside from now on.Copy !req
1300. Your name is Bruce.Copy !req
1301. My name is Bruce.Copy !req
1302. We're gonna try you on farming
for a period, Bruce.Copy !req
1303. - Okay.
- Staff thought you'd be better off.Copy !req
1304. I think you'll like it here.Copy !req
1305. I think I'll like it here.Copy !req
1306. Come on, I'll show you
where you're gonna be sleeping.Copy !req
1307. You like mountains, Bruce?Copy !req
1308. Look up.Copy !req
1309. Mountains.Copy !req
1310. No snow, but mountains.Copy !req
1311. I like mountains.Copy !req
1312. The air is good here.Copy !req
1313. I like air.Copy !req
1314. Yeah.Copy !req
1315. We all like air, Bruce. We really do.Copy !req
1316. That we have in common.Copy !req
1317. 4G.Copy !req
1318. Yours is 4G. Can you remember that?Copy !req
1319. 4G.Copy !req
1320. Will I be seeing my friends?Copy !req
1321. What, you mean
from back where you were?Copy !req
1322. The Santa Ana facility?Copy !req
1323. Mike and Laura...Copy !req
1324. and Mike and Eddie.Copy !req
1325. - And...
- The people from the residence facilities...Copy !req
1326. they don't come out
to the farms, Bruce.Copy !req
1327. - See, these are closed operations.
- Closed operations.Copy !req
1328. But, you know,
you might get back up there...Copy !req
1329. couple times a year.Copy !req
1330. You know,
there are gatherings at Christmas...Copy !req
1331. and the next one is Thanksgiving.Copy !req
1332. Thanksgiving.Copy !req
1333. So you might see them in three months.Copy !req
1334. Hey, Audrey.Copy !req
1335. Glad you could meet.Copy !req
1336. So tell me, are they
getting paranoid about him?Copy !req
1337. No, not at all. The guy's so burnt-out.Copy !req
1338. And we're still convinced
they're growing the stuff?Copy !req
1339. They have to be. Who else?Copy !req
1340. I just wonder
if it even matters at this...Copy !req
1341. It matters, Audrey.Copy !req
1342. It matters when we can prove
that New Path is the one growing...Copy !req
1343. manufacturing and distributing.Copy !req
1344. How does he look?Copy !req
1345. I mean, do you think he's gonna
be able to pull through for us?Copy !req
1346. All we can do is hope
that when he finally gets in there...Copy !req
1347. a few charred brain cells will flicker
on and some distant instinct will kick in.Copy !req
1348. It's just...Copy !req
1349. - It's just such a cost to pay.
- Yeah.Copy !req
1350. But there's no other way to get in there.Copy !req
1351. I couldn't, and think how long I tried.Copy !req
1352. They got that place locked up tight.Copy !req
1353. They're only gonna let a burnt-out husk
like Bruce in.Copy !req
1354. Harmless. You have to be,
or they won't take the risk.Copy !req
1355. Yeah, but to sacrifice someone...Copy !req
1356. a living person,
without them ever knowing it.Copy !req
1357. I mean, if he'd understood,
if he had volunteered...Copy !req
1358. but he doesn't know and he never did.Copy !req
1359. He didn't volunteer for this.Copy !req
1360. Sure he did. It was his job.Copy !req
1361. It wasn't his job to get addicted.Copy !req
1362. We took care of that.Copy !req
1363. Look, Mike, I gotta get out.Copy !req
1364. I can't do this again.Copy !req
1365. I want it to end. I...Copy !req
1366. I lay in bed at night, and I can't sleep,
and I just think:Copy !req
1367. - "Shit, we are colder than they are."
- I don't think so.Copy !req
1368. I mean, I believe God's m.o.
is to transmute evil into good...Copy !req
1369. and if he's active here,
he's doing that now...Copy !req
1370. although our eyes can't perceive it.Copy !req
1371. The whole process is hidden
beneath the surface of our reality...Copy !req
1372. will only be revealed later.Copy !req
1373. And even then...Copy !req
1374. the people of the future...Copy !req
1375. our children's children
will never truly know...Copy !req
1376. this awful time that we have
gone through and the losses we took.Copy !req
1377. Well, maybe some footnote
in a minor history book.Copy !req
1378. A brief mention
with no list of the fallen.Copy !req
1379. You're seeing the flower of the future.Copy !req
1380. - But not for you, Bruce.
- Not for me.Copy !req
1381. No, you've had too much
of a good thing already.Copy !req
1382. Get up, get up. Stop worshipping.Copy !req
1383. This isn't your god anymore,
although it once was.Copy !req
1384. Gone.Copy !req
1385. Flowers gone.Copy !req
1386. No, you just can't see them.Copy !req
1387. Back to work.Copy !req
1388. I saw.Copy !req
1389. Back to work, Bruce.Copy !req
1390. I saw death rising from the earth...Copy !req
1391. from the ground itself...Copy !req
1392. in one blue field.Copy !req
1393. A present for my friends...Copy !req
1394. at Thanksgiving.Copy !req
