109. So Beethoven says, "Shoot, God doesn't exist,

110. so I guess I'm writing this for other people.

111. It's just nuts and bolts now."

112. He didn't have any children, that I can recall,

115. Okay. Great. So he-he writes it for him.

150. One fell swoop. This is just science.

151. Whoever's left will...

152. go to higher ground

153. and social order will fall away,

154. and we will revert to scavengers and hunters

155. and gatherers, but maybe there's someone...

156. someone who one day hums a melody they used to know.

157. And it gives everyone a little bit of hope.

158. Mankind's on the verge of being wiped out,

159. but it keeps going a little bit longer

160. because someone hears someone else hum a melody in a cave

161. and the physics of it in their ear

162. make them feel something other than fear or hunger or hate,

163. and mankind carries on

164. and civilization gets back on track.

165. And now you're thinking you're gonna finish that book.

166. But it won't last.

167. 'Cause by and by, the planet's gonna die.

168. In a few billion years the sun will become a red giant

169. and it'll, uh, eventually swallow Earth whole.

170. This is a fact.

171. Now, maybe by that point,

172. we'll have set up shop on some completely different planet.

173. Good for us. Maybe we've figured out a way

174. of carrying with us all these things that matter.

175. They've got a photocopy of the Mona Lisa out there,

176. someone sees it, mixes a little bit of alien dirt with some spit,

177. paints something new, the whole thing keeps going.

179. But even that doesn't matter. Because even if some form of mankind

180. carries some recording of Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony"

181. all the way into the future,

182. the future's gonna hit a brick wall.

183. The universe will keep expanding,

184. and it'll eventually take all matter with it.

185. Everything you've ever strived for,

186. everything that you and some stranger

187. on the other side of the planet share with some future stranger

188. on some entirely different planet without even knowing it,

189. everything that ever made you feel big or stand up tall,

190. it'll all go.

191. Every atom in this dimension...

192. will be pulled apart by force as simple as...

193. And then all these shredded particles

194. will contract again...

195. and... the universe is gonna

196. suck itself back into a speck too small for any of us to see.

197. So, you can write a book...

198. but the pages will burn.

199. You can sing a song and pass it down.

200. You can write a play and hope that folks will remember it...

201. keep performing it.

202. You can build your dream house...

203. but ultimately none of that matters any more

204. than digging your fingers into the ground to bury a fence post.
