49. my high school had an air-raid drill,

50. and only the headmaster knew it was a drill,

52. I could tell the teachers were scared.

53. There had just been a speech by the president

54. saying we might go to war.

55. - It shall be the policy of this nation

56. to regard any nuclear missile launched from Cuba

57. against any nation in the Western Hemisphere

58. as an attack by the Soviet Union on the United States,

59. requiring a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union.

60. - And so we did what we were supposed to do.

61. We went into the basement of the high school,

62. turned away from any windows any glass,

63. and prepared for the blast to occur.

64. I thought there's a chance it's real,

65. and I don't really want to die in my high-school basement.

66. So can I make it if I bolt?

67. Can I make it to the subway, and can I make it home in time?

68. And I did the math and I couldn't.

69. And there was no way I could get home

70. on the subway in half an hour.

71. So at 12 years old, I was deciding

72. where I wanted to die during a nuclear war.

73. - Your survival chances against dangerous fallout are excellent

74. if you take suitable shelter.

75. - As the Cold War reaches a boiling point

76. in the Cuban Missile Crisis,

77. Richard Clarke and his classmates are fed a double dose

78. of terror and deception...

79. - An attack could come without warning.

81. and the lie that citizens in American cities

83. By the early '60s,

84. the advent of thermonuclear warheads up to 1,000 times

94. that would happen every year.

95. Everyone would have to find shelter

96. and it was all done to persuade people

97. there was something they could do,

98. that they could be active,

99. they would be okay, they would be safe.

100. - And while Americans are distracted

101. by civil-defense drills,

102. the government and military contractors

103. get busy acquiring the real power and wealth

104. that comes from manufacturing

105. tens of thousands of nuclear weapons

106. and the missiles, submarines and bombers to deliver them.

107. - And all these civil defense programs

108. were really a form of emotional management.

109. It was to maintain support

110. for our nuclear-weapon strategy and programs.

111. - The deception goes deeper

112. into the secret massive underground complexes

113. built to actually withstand a nuclear apocalypse,

114. facilities meant only for America's most powerful,

115. those at the highest reaches of government.

116. The workers who maintain the bunkers are told their families

117. will be safe back home in their basement shelters,

118. so they'll follow orders even though their loved ones

119. will be left out on their own when the bombs drop.

120. - One of the things that bothered me about this whole process

121. was that we had planned out what you'd need at the facility —

122. it had to have water,

123. it had their beds, it had to have food.

124. But at some point, someone needed to have thought through,

125. "Are these people going to be fully attentive

126. to the very trying jobs they're going to be asked to do

127. if their families are under the fallout cloud?"

128. - Even President Eisenhower came to believe that,

129. if there were ever a nuclear war,

130. millions would die, even with civil-defense planning.

131. - But President Eisenhower knew privately

132. that this was all bullshit.

133. In the Eisenhower era,

134. there was a phrase that was used to describe

135. what would be after a nuclear attack,

136. and the phrase was "a smoking, radiating ruin."

137. - But for Eisenhower, it wasn't just nuclear war.

138. It was the arms race itself that was leading to the rise

139. of something that could threaten American democracy.

140. So in his farewell address... - We have been compelled

141. to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions.

142. - ... Ike says the quiet part out loud,

143. that Cold War planning is secretly transferring

144. previously unimaginable power into a very few hands,

145. all unaccountable to the people.

146. - We must guard against the acquisition

147. of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought,

148. by the military industrial complex.

149. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists

150. and will persist.

151. We must never let the weight of this combination

152. endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

154. The newly formed Central Intelligence Agency is tasked

155. with containing and rolling back communist expansion.

156. But despite Eisenhower's warnings,

157. the CIA will often act as the secret army

158. of the military industrial complex

159. using any means necessary.

224. - The Vietnam War is the military industrial elite's

226. and it's built upon two fictions —

227. that Southeast Asia is essential to American security

228. and that we're defending the Vietnamese people.

229. - After almost three weeks

230. of some of the war's toughest fighting, the end is in sight.

231. - The war has been raging for years

232. when a top-secret Pentagon report is leaked,

233. revealing perhaps the biggest

234. and certainly the deadliest lie —

235. few of the military planners actually believe

236. the war can be won,

237. but the war won't end for four more years,

238. and when it does, the U. S. will have lost.

239. - We paid the price of 58,000 dead American servicemen

240. and women with hundreds of thousands wounded

241. and with PTSD, with nations in Southeast Asia destroyed.

245. of conspiracy theories about the JFK assassination,

246. Area 51, even the moon landing.

247. - A plane has crashed into one of the towers

248. of the World Trade Center.

249. These remain fringe ideas.

250. But a quarter of a century after the Vietnam War ends,

251. there'll be a chance to unify the country

252. and win back the trust of the American people.

253. - For whatever reason, and there are lots of theories about why,

254. the Bush administration was intent on invading

255. and occupying Iraq,

256. even though it had nothing to do with the war on terrorism.

257. - I was at a shooting range in San Diego,

258. and I was at one end of the range

259. and these two Saudis were at the other end of the range,

260. and they had a.22 caliber silver pistol.

261. And I'm shooting my gun with aimed fire slowly.

262. I hear this pistol go, "Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,

263. bang, bang, bang, bang, bang."

264. I thought, "Who's down there?

265. Who's the idiot who's just shooting that pistol

266. like a machine gun?"

267. After the 9/11 hijackings,

268. I looked at the images, and I realized

269. they were the hijackers from the San Diego cell.

270. - Former intelligence officer Malcolm Nance

271. believes the 9/11 hijackers

272. were able to infiltrate America so easily

273. because of where they came from.

274. - It showed that they could come to the United States,

275. operate like the Saudis,

276. and that green passport would give us an elite blind spot,

277. because when we think of Saudi Arabians,

278. we think of money — very, very large,

279. vast amounts of Gulf state oil money.

280. And that is the blind spot

281. that allows people to exploit our system.

282. - 10 months after Nance's citing,

283. Americans are united in their horror and grief

284. and quickly realize that, despite the trillions

285. invested in protecting the nation,

286. those defenses have failed,

287. notably in the months leading up to the 9/11 attack.

288. - We began to receive lots of intelligence indications

289. that there was going to be a major terrorist strike

290. by Al-Qaeda, by bin Laden's organization

291. against the United States/

292. - On 9/11, Richard Clarke is working in the White House.

293. His job — advise the president about terrorist threats.

294. - The Bush administration did very little in response

295. to that intelligence.

296. Despite the CIA director telling him repeatedly

297. that there was a major attack coming,

298. despite my warnings,

299. the Bush administration didn't try to find Al-Qaeda people

300. in the United States, didn't ask all the agencies

301. to do their maximum,

302. didn't try to preempt the attack

303. by going after bin Laden in Afghanistan.

304. - Why Clarke's warnings to Bush were ignored

305. has never fully been explained,

306. but some believe it had to do with the fact

307. that 15 of the 19 hijackers came from one country,

308. America's oil-rich ally, Saudi Arabia.

309. For years, the Saudi royals had been playing a dangerous game,

310. funding a strain of radical Islam

311. that inspired the son of one

312. of the country's richest construction tycoons

313. to become a terrorist leader while cozying up

314. to powerful American political dynasties like the Bushes,

315. an oil family that produced two presidents.

316. - The Saudis have always wanted a president

317. who could play by their rules.

318. "Let's just keep pumping oil. Let's get things stable."

319. - By some estimates over the decades,

320. the Saudis move over a billion dollars to the Bush family

321. and its allied companies and institutions.

322. - These people essentially are Bond villains

323. who are running countries.

324. They don't believe in democracy,

325. and bin Laden knew Saudi Arabians

326. were treated well in the United States

327. and they could just walk right into the country

328. and learn whatever they wanted

329. and the Americans would worship them.

330. - After 9/11, rather than allow an open investigation,

331. the Bush White House demands the congressional committees

332. redact 28 pages of their 9/11 report

333. related to the question of whether the Saudi government

334. was involved in the attacks.

335. When the pages are finally released in 2012,

336. they detailed extensive links between men

337. the FBI thinks could be Saudi intelligence officers

338. and the hijackers, including the two men Nance saw in San Diego.

339. But the report stopped short of finding conclusive proof

340. of a connection between the Saudi government and 9/11.

341. And rather than own up to the immense intelligence failure

342. that allowed 9/11 to happen.

343. The Bush administration executes what is perhaps

344. the 21st century's greatest feat of misdirection.

345. They shift blame from the actual perpetrator

346. to a completely unrelated target,

347. Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein.

348. - George W. Bush was guided by George Herbert Walker Bush's

349. defense secretary, Dick Cheney.

350. They wanted to liberate Iraq for the sake of liberating the oil,

351. which would assist the Saudis,

352. not liberate Iraq for the sake of liberating Iraqis.

353. - And just as it had with Vietnam,

354. the government creates the illusion

355. that vital American interests are at stake and goes further,

356. suggesting that Iraq is a dire threat to the United States.

357. One of the most trusted figures in American society

358. is rolled out to level the accusation

359. that Iraq has been hiding weapons of mass destruction

360. and is prepared to use them.

361. - The facts and Iraq's behavior show that Saddam Hussein

362. and his regime are concealing their efforts

363. to produce more weapons of mass destruction.

364. - And in addition to the threat, Americans are told

365. that the Iraqi people

366. want us to invade their country.

367. - Do you think the American people are prepared for a long,

368. costly, and bloody battle?

369. - I don't think it's likely to unfold that way, Tim,

370. because I really do believe we will be

371. greeted as liberators.

372. - But these are lies on a massive scale

373. and will lead to countless deaths

374. and kill faith in government

375. for a new generation of Americans.

376. - Iraq had nothing to do with the attack on 9/11,

377. but for whatever reason, and there are lots of theories

378. about why, the Bush administration

379. was intent on invading and occupying Iraq,

380. even though it had nothing to do with the war on terrorism.

381. - As the U. S. rolls into Iraq, weapons of mass destruction

382. are never found and another false promise is exposed.

383. Instead of being greeted as liberators,

384. American soldiers are seen as an occupying army.

385. - Go away! Go away! - Go away! Go away!

386. - We moved hundreds of thousands of American targets

387. closer to people with guns and bombs

388. who could have terrorist attacks against them,

389. and that's what happened in Iraq.

390. - Watch out!

391. - You had a political leadership

392. that was largely dominated by chicken hawks,

393. people who had never served themselves.

394. They're sending other people's kids off to war.

395. They're not sending their own kids.

396. - The Saudi oil ties, the intelligence failure,

397. the inability to find weapons of mass destruction,

398. some take these strands and weave

399. a wild conspiracy theory that Bush and his cronies

400. orchestrated 9/11 to justify the Iraq invasion.

401. - September 11th was not just a terrible tragedy

402. that took the lives of thousands of innocent people.

403. It was a violent and aggressive seizure of power

404. and a transformation of both foreign and domestic policy.

405. It was an American coup.

406. - Despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary,

407. the 9/11 conspiracy theorists make the bizarre claim

408. that no planes were actually hijacked,

409. and it was planted bombs

410. that destroyed the Pentagon and Trade Center.

411. Not seeing the irony, they would call themselves 9/11 truthers.

412. - What had been only on the fringes

413. is now a new kind of movement, people who believe

414. everything they're being told by authority is a lie.

415. - It was the head of CIA! FBI! Homeland Security!

416. - Their views are amplified

417. by the Internet and seep into the mainstream.

418. - The Tower 7 one is the weirdest one of all,

419. 'cause if that — if it's —

420. when you watch that one, I was like,

421. "Why does that collapse like that?"

422. Like, it's just strange.

423. - And I'm sure you've seen the BBC reporter

424. who was speaking on camera

425. and World Trade Center 7 is behind her,

426. and she says, "World Trade Center 7 has just fallen.

427. It has fallen.

428. It is the third building —" and it's still standing.

429. - The truth is, delusion paints the attack as a false flag,

430. a covert government op

431. designed to look like the work of someone else.

432. And suddenly false flags are seen everywhere.

433. - Can you imagine being a parent of a little child

434. who saw this scene that you're looking at right now?

435. - In a grotesque twist, even school shootings

436. are labeled hoaxes perpetrated by the government to justify

437. taking away Americans' guns.

438. - This is not just the 17 poor, dead young people

439. that had their lives taken from them.

440. This is the globalist crime syndicate

461. from real political debates

462. about real problems, like growing economic inequality

463. as the country struggles to recover from the 2008 recession.

464. And when Donald Trump runs for president himself,

465. he leverages the mistrust accrued from the falsehoods

466. of Democrats and Republicans alike.

467. - They lie. They said there were weapons of mass destruction.

468. There were none, and they knew there were none.

469. - Trump goes further, enrobing himself in aggrievement

470. the sense not only that American greatness has been lost,

471. but that it's been stolen.

472. - The establishment protected itself

473. but not the citizens of our country.

474. - And shortly after Trump becomes president,

475. in a dark corner of the Internet,

476. another online conspiracy erupts with Trump at the center,

477. they savior battling a cabal inside government.

478. The dual state is rebranded the deep state,

479. and Trump discovers that decades of lies and mistrust

480. can be very useful indeed.

481. - It's not that surprising, because if you actually believe

482. the theories that are espoused by QAnon as reality,

483. they would probably warrant some pretty dramatic responses.

484. - I want to tell you that this marks the start

485. of the second American Revolution.

486. - Decades of Cold War, living on a constant war footing,

487. under the looming cloud

488. of seemingly imminent nuclear annihilation,

489. all of it has a profound effect on the American mind.

490. - America is going under leftist martial law,

491. and if the communist Chinese agent Joe Biden

492. is able to get in there,

493. he will put America under permanent lock-down,

494. siege until we're brought to our knees.

495. - In the last 50 years, we've pretty much always existed

496. at the brink of some kind of existential threat,

497. usually a self-made one,

499. and so in those times, people develop belief systems

500. that help them cope, help them maintain,

507. the art of misdirection.

512. it is somehow or another the result of traitors.

513. - In the '80s, Rambo embodies the country's rage over the lies

514. and the loss of Vietnam,

515. but he transfers blame from the government

516. that orchestrated the war to the protesters who opposed it.

517. - But somebody wouldn't let us win.

518. And I come back to the world,

519. and I see all those maggots at the airport,

520. protesting me, spitting, calling me "baby killer"

521. and all kinds of vile crap.

522. - It's a result of columns within the country

523. who are obsessed with destroying America.

524. They are themselves evil.

525. And so when you start believing in these conspiracy theories,

526. you come to believe that America itself has been infected

527. with corruption and traitors and evil

528. so much that democracy is untenable.

529. - Fueled partly by the mistrust

530. that comes with decades of government lies,

531. conspiracy movements proliferate after 9/11

532. and in Donald Trump, they have found their champion.

533. Even a Fox News ally wonders if he's gone off the rails.

534. - Who do you think is pulling Biden's strings?

535. Is it former Obama officials?

536. - People that you've never heard of,

537. people that are in the dark shadows, people that —

538. - What does that mean? That sounds like conspiracy theory.

539. Dark shadows? What is that?

540. - No, people that you haven't heard of.

541. They're people that are on the streets.

542. They're people that are controlling the streets.

543. - The most extreme conspiracy movement,

544. which gains by far the most followers, is called QAnon.

545. It begins with a series of posts on an Internet bulletin board

546. starting in October 2017.

547. - This mysterious person who called themselves Q

548. was claiming that Donald Trump was engaged in a secret war

549. against a variety of enemies,

550. mostly members of the so-called deep state,

551. and that soon Donald Trump's enemies would be arrested

552. or put to death.

553. - Are you kidding me? We will not cower down to evil!

554. We're Americans!

555. - QAnon is a far-right conspiracy based on blood libel,

556. which is an ancient anti-Semitic concept

557. that Jewish people are eating Christian babies.

558. In this case, they've changed that a little bit.

559. - QAnon's version of the blood libel has Donald Trump at war

560. with a deep-state cabal that's abducting children

561. and drinking their blood.

562. The satanic group is vast and includes Hillary Clinton,

563. Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden,

564. billionaires George Soros and Bill Gates

565. and even entertainers like Tom Hanks, Ellen, and Oprah Winfrey.

566. - The first event predicted by Q —

567. claiming that Hillary Clinton was going to be arrested

568. within 48 hours of the post.

569. That was obviously false,

570. but this did not stop QAnon in any way.

571. - People who believe the disinformation,

572. misinformation that they are promulgating,

573. we've seen, will do some pretty extreme things.

574. And it's not that surprising because if you actually believe

575. the theories that are espoused by QAnon as reality,

576. they would probably warrant some pretty dramatic responses

577. - Since that first post in 2017,

578. purveyors of the patently false QAnon conspiracy theory

579. have attracted millions of new adherents

580. with online videos full of quasi-religious prophecies

581. about a coming storm and a great awakening.

582. - What if I told you it was done on purpose?

583. What if I told you that those who were corrupting the world,

584. poisoning our food, and igniting conflict were themselves about

585. to be permanently eradicated from the Earth?

586. - As the conspiracy cult grows,

587. its narrative expands with increasingly outlandish claims.

588. - One person claims that there are 20,000 children

589. being kept beneath the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

590. Another claims instead that these "mole children"

591. are being held beneath Central Park.

592. QAnon believers take typos

593. and even the act of the president

594. drinking a bottle of FIJI Water as messages that are coded

595. and being sent to them across the airwaves for them

596. to figure out on their own time.

597. - The QAnon lie about a deep state cabal

598. is the legacy of decades of official lies.

599. At the same time, QAnon serves the purposes

600. of the current government elite.

601. If you paint your opponents

602. as Satan-worshiping drinkers of children's blood,

603. any action against them is justified.

604. - Then we end up in an "every man for himself,"

605. "survival of the fittest"

606. kind of prepper jungle, right?

607. It's a way of bringing about the apocalypse now.

608. That's why they call it the Great Awakening.

609. They want to bring it on. Let's get there.

610. - Even when Trump is no longer president,

611. the post-truth world may be his legacy,

612. thanks in part to decades of lies by leaders before him.

613. And without a set of truths to unite us,

614. we may remain divided and find that stamping out

615. hateful conspiracies is like fighting shadows.

630. How do I characterize 2020?

631. - A horror story. Plain and simple.

632. - It seems like everything just keeps getting worse,

633. just worse and worse all the time.

634. - 2020 is the year disaster struck and threatens Americans

635. in every part of the country,

636. and not only have the nation's defenses proved inadequate,

637. the president hasn't even pretended to protect us.

638. - It's going to disappear one day.

639. It's like a miracle. It will disappear.

640. - A stress test for the system, and we have largely failed it.

641. - We really reached

642. a kind of maximum brittleness as a society.

643. - The lie that the government is there

644. to defend us is laid bare.

645. Other falsehoods designed

646. to reinforce the president's power accelerate.

647. - 2020 is bad.

648. The only question is, will 2021 be worse?

649. - The way that Donald Trump has faced the pandemic

650. or failed to face the pandemic

651. is the greatest national security blunder

653. It dwarfs Vietnam.

654. It dwarfs the Iraq war.

655. It's killing our citizens.

656. It's occupying our military. It's eroding our economy.

657. The pandemic is hurting America

660. - The Democrats want us to fail so badly...

661. - ... Donald Trump sees the virus

662. as a political ploy by Democrats...

663. - ... and this is their new hoax.

664. - ... and when COVID spread is impossible to ignore,

665. Trump attempts to gaslight the nation with false optimism.

666. - Now, the virus that we're talking about having to do,

667. you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April

668. with the heat as the heat comes in.

669. Typically, that will go away in April.

670. We're in great shape, though.

671. - But the U. S. is in the worst shape.

672. Could a reason we make up only 4% of the world's population

673. but account for over 20% of the deaths

674. be that so many Americans don't trust authority,

675. the legacy of decades of government lies?

676. - All Trump's assurances about the coronavirus going away

677. and that it's just going to disappear

678. and we're all going to be just fine,

679. I think those efforts are propaganda.

680. They're very similar to the Eisenhower-era propaganda

681. that, you know, we can survive a nuclear war,

682. you know, if you just get in your basement.

683. If you just have detergent down there,

684. you can scrub off the radioactive fallout,

685. and your family could be okay.

686. - Behind closed doors in conversations

690. Meanwhile, misinformation creeps into the mainstream.

691. QAnon followers claim the pandemic is an elaborate ruse

692. to increase authoritarian control over their lives

693. and to undermine their fearless leader.

694. - The COVID hoax was in the works

695. years before the election of Donald Trump,

696. but they started fast-tracking it.

697. - As Trump pretends that America has turned a corner,

698. he holds large in-person rallies...

699. - I hear from your two great senators and your governor

700. that we're doing very well in Oklahoma. That's the word.

701. - ... superspreader events that a Stanford study

702. finds have led, at the time,

703. to more than 30,000 infections and over 700 deaths.

704. - President Trump was ridiculing the notion

705. of people wearing masks,

706. you see, is a pathological,

707. almost sociopathic lack of compassion for other people,

708. not just the American people as a whole,

709. but for the people he works with in his own administration.

710. - When Trump contracts COVID himself,

711. he receives care unavailable to virtually any other American,

712. yet he takes his recovery as proof

713. that taking steps to avoid COVID is somehow a moral failure.

714. - Don't let it dominate you. Don't be afraid of it.

715. - We have forgotten what to expect from a president,

716. especially in moments of disaster,

717. and we are neck deep in it. - We're on our own...

718. - Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, uh,

719. whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light.

720. - ... but there's this illusion

721. that there's someone in charge...

722. - And then I see the disinfectant.

723. - ... and that's the worst of both worlds.

724. - And is there a way we can do something like that

725. by injection inside or — or almost a cleaning?

726. - The coronavirus crisis is exposing failures

727. even deeper than a president refusing to protect us.

728. - That's assault, ma'am.

729. - It reveals a mistrust of authority so profound

730. that many won't wear the masks necessary to curb the outbreak,

731. and it lays bare the government's inability

732. to protect the vulnerable.

733. As the country teeters on the abyss,

734. we're witnessing a loss of faith in America itself.

735. - I was in the Soviet Union when it collapsed back in 1992,

736. and when I came back to the West,

737. I was shocked by how complacent people were with

738. this presumption that history only went in one direction,

739. because I've seen that history can go into reverse.

740. And, unfortunately, when that happens, it can be brutal.

741. - Americans are starting to realize more and more

742. that they don't have to be powerless,

743. and we can start to build something real and true

744. and human and reject this militarism of the Cold War.

746. A psychological experiment is being conducted that will shape

747. the shadow government's dark view of human nature.

748. The experiment, which would guide

749. America's Cold War military strategy,

750. takes the form of a game. - Well, we got to win.

751. - Game theory was a burgeoning study

752. that started with this game, prisoner's dilemma,

753. in which two opponents took each other on

754. with their moves hidden behind a structure.

755. - Each prisoner has to decide whether to rat out the other guy

756. in exchange for a lighter sentence.

757. The way the game is structured, the safe thing to do

758. is betray your fellow prisoner because they may betray you.

759. - The strategy was to always act in your own interests,

760. to always act in bad faith.

761. You had to always assume that your opponent

762. was seeking to destroy you and was going to lie

763. and not communicate or negotiate.

764. - For the doomsday planners,

765. game theory is embodied in the doctrine

766. called "mutually assured destruction," or MAD.

767. - If the Russians try to nuke us,

768. we're going to nuke them right back.

769. Our bombs are on autopilot.

771. the insanity of mutual destruction

772. with a so-called doomsday machine...

773. - Doomsday machine. - ... that can't be stopped

774. once it's triggered. - Doomsday machine?

775. What is that? - A device which will destroy

776. all human and animal life on Earth.

777. - All human and animal?

778. - Those guys, the opposites of us, the ideology that we hate,

779. those guys are coming for us.

780. The threat is out there. It's external.

781. - But what if that threat isn't out there,

782. but within our own society,

783. in official lies and misinformation, in division,

784. in the failure of our own leaders to protect us?

785. - The opposite of mutually assured destruction

786. is self-destruction.

787. That's the path we're on now.

788. - We are in the middle of something that I am not sure

789. that we're going to get out of.

790. We are probably more divided

791. than we've ever been in the United States.

792. We're in the grip of a pretty devastating set of circumstances

793. that are going to probably affect us

794. for generations.

795. - We're scared, and it's very difficult not to be.

796. But what we can do is exercise our agency.

797. We have to make our choices.

798. We have to not only vote, but we also have to be active.

799. We have to work essentially in the spirit of, you know,

800. the late and great John Lewis, to go out

801. and make good and necessary trouble.

802. - As America mourns and tears at itself,

803. maybe there's one upside to the horrors of 2020.

804. We're finally facing the legacy of lies that got us here.

805. - As these things start to collapse,

806. Americans are starting to realize more and more

807. that they don't have to be powerless.

808. They do not have to accept a world

809. in which they have to sacrifice for the good of a state,

810. particularly when the state

811. doesn't hold up its end of the bargain.

812. Americans are starting to wake up from this mythology

813. that they have been taught and realized that power can come

814. from grassroots organization and solidarity,

815. and we can start to build something real and true

816. and human and reject this militarism of the Cold War.

817. - So what would real security look like?

818. It would look like embracing

819. the general welfare of the American people

820. and the general welfare of the species.

821. - This is what democracy looks like!

822. - That would involve cutting all of the spending on warfare

823. and surveillance and policing

824. and redirecting it towards meeting human needs,

825. and we need to be thinking about all fantasies

826. of individual survival

827. in the face of some sort of atomic apocalypse

828. or environmental apocalypse are just that.

829. They're fantasies, and they have no basis in reality.

830. I mean, we are — from our days as hunter gatherers to today,

831. we are a group species.

832. We're all totally dependent on each other.

833. And if we can't see that, that's our greatest peril.
