Utopia 1x2

1. It's a comic?

2. No, it's a graphic novel.

3. It's called The Utopia Experiments.

4. You had this. Where is it?

5. If just one of those conspiracy theories was proved. Just one...

6. - What about Utopia, then? - Oh, tell him, Becky.

7. Utopia Part Two, there must be something in it that they want.

8. I also live with my mum.

9. Jesus Christ! You're going to make me cry now, Ian.

10. My mission?

11. You should persuade him to take it.

12. What about the vaccine? Russian flu.

13. I think we could reconsider.

14. He signed.

15. He's fucking resigning, Michael.

16. My mate's going to ask you a question.

17. - (GASPING) - Where is Jessica Hyde?

18. My name is Jessica Hyde.

19. Come with me now or you'll. All die.

20. Who are you? And what's going on?

21. Ian, don't point that gun at me.

22. How... how do you know my name?

23. Jessica Hyde.

24. Wilson?

25. They did this.

26. We all have to go now.

27. We're not going anywhere until you tell us who you are,

28. how you know my name and what the fuck is going on.

29. Ian, you won't be able to shoot me.

30. Yeah? Don't imagine I won't, Jess.

31. No, really, you won't be able to shoot me.

32. You've got the safety catch on.

33. They don't generally have safety catches.

34. Except on telly.

35. Every second we stay here is a second they are getting closer,

36. and they'll kill us all. Please, come with me.

37. What about my dad? He's going home.

38. I've arranged for someone to pick up your dad from where he works.

39. You don't know where he works.

40. Davington's on Vesta Road.

41. They're picking him up now.

42. I promise.

43. I'm not sure about this.

44. You two ready?

45. Yeah, we're ready.

46. There's CCTV at both ends of your street. We'll go through the back.

47. OK, stay there.

48. What if someone's in?

49. social unrest if prices continue to rise.

50. The Shadow Home Secretary has suggested

51. the Government's apparent lack of planning could lead to outbreaks of violence...

52. Is this your car?

53. You're so cute.

54. Are you going to tell us what's going on?

55. Who's after us?

56. In the 1970s, the Soviets set up a germ-warfare programme

57. called Biopreparat. It was huge.

58. They were weaponising anthrax, Ebola, smallpox, on a massive scale.

59. The West panicked and created an organisation to combat the threat.

60. It was known as The Network.

61. It was based in no country, reported to no-one,

62. and was utterly deniable.

63. It did things democratic governments couldn't.

64. They were insane, totally out of control.

65. What's that got to do with us?

66. Basically, that's who's after you.

67. You're fucking joking, right?

68. Right.

69. Do you know where that is yet?

70. No.

71. I'll come there anyway.

72. Give me the gun.

73. We need clothes and money. Your accounts are useless now.

74. What, you're going to rob them?

75. Let me make this very clear.

76. Your lives as you knew them are over.

77. What the next 48 hours are about is abandoning everything you knew

78. or thought you could rely on, and adjusting to the new reality.

79. If you can adjust, you will live.

80. If you can't, you will die.

81. Now, we need to change the way you look.

82. We need to get very far away, and we need drugs for Wilson.

83. Give me the gun.

84. Ian, hang on, c-can we talk about this?

85. I mean, it's an armed robbery.

86. It's adjust or die, Ian.

87. I don't know what to think of her.

88. You could have fooled me.

89. Oh, you've got to be fucking kidding me.

90. What, you just going to watch, are you?

91. Here. Diamorphine.

92. What, heroin?

93. It's a painkiller. It'll do for now.

94. You look good.

95. Should wear that colour more often.

96. You look shit. But in a good way.

97. We need to get out of the city.

98. We'll transfer to a van to keep Wilson out of sight,

99. then burn this out.

100. Do you have the manuscript, Ian?

101. Utopia Part Two.

102. You need to tell me if you have it.

103. We don't.

104. Bejan never turned up.

105. I haven't got Wilson's father.

106. I need to do things to keep us alive.

107. Some of those things you wouldn't normally approve of.

108. This is insane.

109. Yesterday I was arrested for a sex crime, today I'm on the run

110. from ex-government nutters who want to pull out my eyes.

111. I'm a fucking IT consultant.

112. - Geoff? Geoff. - Hmm?

113. Have you seen this?

114. (LAUGHS) Yeah.

115. Those bastards have got a real bee in their bonnet about the bloody vaccine.

116. But they've named me.

117. Well, you did buy it, Michael.

118. And in any case, there's nothing we can do about it. We're tied into the contract.

119. Yeah, well... Well, we're not, actually.

120. I've found a cancellation clause.

121. It can be enacted if the department's total spend

122. with the supplier is over 240 million.

123. It's to ensure diversity of supply.

124. Yeah, but this is only 83 million, Michael, I mean, really, it's...

125. No, no, but it's iota/spend.

126. We get two other vaccines from Corvadt.

127. Plus a wide range of antibiotics, cytotoxics, hypoglycaemics...

128. I mean, this puts us well over 240 mil.

129. Have the contracts sent over to me immediately. No-one else to see them.

130. Look, whatever Corvadt are paying you,

131. we are not going to get away with it.

132. We can stop all this.

133. We can stop it all now.

134. It's horrendous, trying to conceive, isn't it?

135. The medical nature of it all, the IVF, all that science.

136. A man needs warmth.

137. So I understand you fucking a prostitute, I do.

138. But what I don't understand is you getting her pregnant.

139. Do you think your wife will understand?

140. Now, get the contract straight over to me now.

141. It's for the best.

142. Ian and I are going up ahead.

143. Great! Have fun.

144. Where are we going?

145. I hack airline companies, look for people going on holiday,

146. stay at their houses. They never know.

147. This is connected to a trip wire in the drive.

148. Have everything by the back door,

149. always be ready to leave within 60 seconds.

150. What if you're in the bath?

151. No baths, no showers.

152. It's time to stop worrying about looking pretty, Becky.

153. Are you trying to wind me up?

154. There'd be no value to that that I can see.

155. You got a thing for tough women, is it?

156. Oh, don't worry, Ian. I get it.

157. Imagine her big, strong arms around you.

158. What?

159. You let us walk into this.

160. I mean, how much did you know?

161. Because we had no idea. Look at Wilson's face.

162. That's not my fault!

163. Tell that to his dad.

164. Because she doesn't have him, by the way.

165. Right, tell us the truth.

166. All of it. Not bits and pieces - all.

167. Or I leave.

168. Would you like to at least sit down first, Becky?

169. No, Jessica, I fucking wouldn't.

170. The Network was created by two men.

171. A geneticist called Philip Carvel, and someone called Mr Rabbit...

172. "Mr Rabbit"?

173. It's a code name, no-one knows the real identity.

174. When the Cold War began to wind down,

175. the various governments involved decided to back away.

176. Only thing was, Mr Rabbit and Carvel had no intention of stopping.

177. At some point, Carvel wanted out.

178. So they tortured him to keep him working and held his daughter hostage.

179. Eventually, his mind snapped and... he went mad.

180. He was going be got rid of but somehow he was smuggled out,

181. given a new name, and hidden in a psychiatric hospital.

182. The hospital was Shenley.

183. And the new name was Mark Dane.

184. What, you...

185. You mean Carvel wrote Utopia?

186. A therapist got him drawing.

187. What he drew was...

188. incredible.

189. So all the things in Utopia are real?

190. Like... BSE. They created that?

191. It's hard to say what's real and what's not. But, yeah...

192. BSE was theirs.

193. How do you know all this?

194. I'm Philip Carvel's daughter.

195. I was smuggled out with him when I was four.

196. I've been on the run ever since.

197. Did you pricks give me heroin?

198. We had to. For the pain.

199. Oh.

200. Well, I hope it wasn't Afghan.

201. Taliban have been altering it for years to make us infertile.

202. Everyone knows that.

203. Sssh.

204. We need to find Utopia.

205. We start with where it came from.

206. What? What about the others?

207. It's fine. I left a note.

208. "Back soon, don't have a bath."

209. Look, Wilson needs someone to look after...

210. That is not the reason!

211. Don't you see what she's doing? She's trying to divide us!

212. Becky, that makes no sense.

213. - Then why take you and not me? - Because you're not strong enough.

214. I can't risk taking you.

215. I know stuff. I know more than he does.

216. Like, what about Corvadt?

217. They're involved, they gave people disease.

218. What about Corvadt? They're involved - so what?

219. They're a bit player.

220. You're not ready, Becky.

221. - Look, you just need time to... - Right, go on, then.

222. Fuck off!

223. What's that?

224. Oh, it's nothing.

225. - It's work. - (SHE SIGHS)

226. Don't worry.

227. I very scared.

228. I-I know, I-I mean...

229. They find out I pregnant. They angry.

230. Well, you just have to give me some time.

231. Michael, I think I watched.

232. Watched? By who?

233. I don't know. I scared that they come now.

234. Michael, you help, yes?

235. You good man, yes?

236. Michael Dugdale?

237. My name's William Kaye, I'm a journalist.

238. I wanted to talk about the flu vaccine.

239. No, no, I'm sorry...

240. Listen to me! Your life is in danger.

241. This isn't about a fucking story!

242. If I just wanted a story,

243. I'd report the fact that you've got a Russian prostitute pregnant.

244. There's my card.

245. Things are going to get mad.

246. You'll need me when they do.

247. Bejan got Utopia from the comic shop.

248. They got it from a dealer in Scotland...

249. who is now dead.

250. And he got it from this guy - Jack Tate.

251. And who's Jack Tate?

252. The man who published Utopia.

253. Mrs Tate?

254. Yes?

255. We need to speak to your husband.

256. Right.

257. My... husband's dead.

258. Do you want to come in?

259. This was his study.

260. Can you tell us where he died?

261. Er... The A22 under the Hailsham Bridge.

262. He walked out in front of a lorry.

263. I'm sorry. Do you miss him?

264. Of course I miss him.

265. Actually, I have something you might be interested in.

266. Yeah, it's a... thing - I can't describe it -

267. papers and drawings.

268. That sounds like exactly the sort of thing we're looking for.

269. We have to get out of here now.

270. What? Why?

271. Yes, you might want these papers...

272. What the fuck have you done?

273. - She's with them. - What? What are you talking about?

274. Police turn up asking to see your dead husband and you don't ask why?

275. Ah, shit.

276. Glock 22.

277. She's CIA.

278. It means she knows next to fucking nothing.

279. That's how they work.

280. They have people high up

281. who get their drones to do their work for them.

282. You're going to answer my questions.

283. And if I think you've told me even one lie...

284. I'll put this wire in the water...

285. plug this in,

286. flip the switch.

287. Understand?

288. Why are you here?

289. (AMERICAN ACCENT) We got a tip-off.

290. The man who lived here

291. has been wanted on terrorism charges for... over 25 years.

292. But we were too late. He'd already killed himself,

293. so... so we took his wife in.

294. Has the wife given you any information?

295. I don't know.

296. What did she say when you got here?

297. On the day he died, he was talking crazy, he wasn't making any sense,

298. he said he'd been visited by a tramp...

299. A tramp?

300. A tramp or The Tramp?

301. I don't know. "The", maybe, or...

302. Look, hang on...

303. I asked you a question.

304. Was it a tramp...

305. or The Tramp?

306. "The". It was "The", definitely "The“.

307. She said "The“.

308. - A select committee? - Yes.

309. With powers to look into all aspects of the acquisition process.

310. This is not going away, Geoff. They're announcing it tomorrow.

311. Do nothing. Keep quiet.

312. The morning will bring something new. It always does.

313. Geoff, we cannot do nothing!

314. Well, it's sort of an order, actually.

315. Worry less.

316. Look, I know it's scary now.

317. But tomorrow, you'll be a hero. I promise.

318. You didn't call in.

319. We were worried.

320. You're not Agency. Who are you?

321. No.

322. I'm not Agency. I'm a specialist.

323. What did you tell them?

324. What did I tell 'em?

325. They were going to fucking fry me - what do you think I told them?

326. I told them everything I knew.

327. Was it her?

328. Yeah.

329. Yeah, it was her.

330. She was with a young black male, 25, 28.

331. Was a young man there?

332. Messed-up face, missing an eye?

333. Er...

334. HO.

335. No, just... them.

336. Look, are you going to untie me?

337. Wow. That looks great!

338. It's like, um... pirate chic.

339. How's your sight?

340. Er... I can see shapes and colours.

341. Thanks for looking after me, Becky.

342. Where's my dad?

343. She lied.

344. She had to get us out, Wilson.

345. I mean, she... He's probably fine.

346. I need to find out.

347. We can't. You know they'll be monitoring our families, we'll put them in danger...

348. Look online. I'll show you how to disguise the search.

349. I swear they won't know it came from here.

350. - Wilson, we can't. - I need to know.

351. Please.

352. His name's Milton.

353. Milton? Milton Wilson?

354. What is it with your family and names?

355. Right, you're sure they can't trace this?

356. Positive. He's a cricket nut, he logs in every day.

357. You'll see whether or not he's logged in.

358. Is he there?

359. Hang on, I'm not in yet.

360. Is he there?

361. Er...

362. yeah.

363. Yeah, yeah, he's there, he's fine.

364. Grant has the manuscript.

365. I heard them talking about it, and they mentioned him.

366. I weren't going to fucking tell her.

367. Who are you, then?

368. I'm Alice.

369. What are you doing?

370. - You're not from this school. - Fuck off before you get hurt!

371. I'm not scared of you!

372. What's that?

373. - Comic. - Well?

374. Are you going to show me or are you going to be a twat all day?

375. Going to tell me your name, then, twat?

376. Grant.

377. Pleased to meet you, Grant.

378. Alice.

379. Shit!

380. Don't go.

381. Same time tomorrow, twat.

382. Are you sure this'll work?

383. Fanaticomix? Grant's addicted to it.

384. It's nerd heaven. And you have to read all the personals,

385. otherwise you miss all the good stuff.

386. I don't.

387. Other people do.

388. But what if they're monitoring it?

389. Say to meet at the Embassy.

390. Dane based the Embassy on the Taunton Building

391. on the Kame Hill Estate.

392. Only a real twat would know that.

393. And me.

394. Never deny your inner twat, Wilson.

395. It's part of your charm.

396. Oh.

397. 20...

398. And then 6 plus something = 20.

399. Don't forget to brush.

400. I won't.

401. Good night, Mummy.

402. - Sleep tight, darling. - Love you.

403. What are you doing?

404. Can I sleep on your floor?

405. I won't do nothing, I promise.

406. Have you got that comic?

407. This is so beautiful.

408. Yeah. And that's part two.

409. No-one's ever seen that - just you and me.

410. You're quite surprising, you know.

411. You strike me more as a Spider-Man type.

412. Oh, we should sleep.

413. If my mum sees a light, she'll come in.

414. Twat.

415. Thanks for letting me read Utopia.

416. Just to look after, like.

417. Keep it under your bed.

418. I'll... I'll... I-I'll come back.

419. For that.

420. Oh.

421. Didn't they come back last night?

422. Nope. Wankers.

423. What we going to do?

424. I know what I'm going to do.

425. I'm going to have a fucking bath.

426. We're getting more information on our breaking news story -

427. the outbreak of flu in the Shetland Islands.

428. We can confirm two more people have now died,

429. bringing the death toll to 11.

430. That's 11 now dead on the Shetland island of Fetlar

431. from the suspected outbreak of Russian flu.

432. - (CAFETIERE CRASH ES) - Shit!

433. 18 dead, 33 infected. There's only 86 on the island.

434. Geoff's ordered a quarantine. No-one gets in or out.

435. Right. Er... Right.

436. If it's a new strain, it's got infection rates already of 58%.

437. Michael, thank God you got the vaccine.

438. You're a fucking hero.

439. Did you tell them my name? Did you tell them my fucking name?

440. No, no, I didn't say anything.

441. I think they're on to me.

442. I think I'm being followed. I mean, I... I saw two men.

443. Jesus Christ!

444. Have you seen the news?

445. It's happening. I told you.

446. What do I do?

447. I mean, people are dying!

448. We need a sample of the vaccine.

449. You can request one direct from Corvadt.

450. It's within your remit as an advisor. There's a man in Sheffield,

451. a scientist called Donaldson - get it to him.

452. What about you?

453. What about you?

454. Do exactly as I fucking say!

455. The Tramp used to be a scientist with The Network. He got out.

456. Now he monitors their activities.

457. He has to keep under the radar to stay alive.

458. I reckon that's his office.

459. A public phone?

460. Here we go.

461. Him? But...

462. He really is a tramp?

463. (LAUGHS) Yeah.

464. He's called The Tramp, Ian.

465. Hello, Danny.

466. Oh, shit! Oh!

467. Fucking hell!

468. You nearly broke my nose. You nearly broke my fucking nose!

469. Jessica, how lovely.

470. How did you know Utopia had a part two?

471. He's on our side, isn't he?

472. There are no sides.

473. Just people who help you and people who don't.

474. Now, now, Jess, you know a gentleman

475. - never reveals his... - Don't make me ask you again, Danny.

476. Jack told me years ago.

477. I went to see him now because I wanted part two.

478. - I knew Jack from the old days, you see. - Why?

479. What's in it?

480. He never told me,

481. and when your father died, well, it didn't matter any more.

482. But now they have something.

483. Your father was working on a project called Janus before he died.

484. They've replicated his research.

485. They have it. They're going to test it.

486. And... and what does Janus do?

487. I swear I don't know.

488. The last thing your father was working on

489. were viral delivery vectors that attack the human genome.

490. And Tate? What did he say?

491. He said that this is the end.

492. He said that we are all finished.

493. And he took his own life.

494. We need to work together, Jess, you and I...

495. What I still don't get is what you were going to do with it.

496. I mean, what use would it be to a decrepit old sack of filth like you?

497. What do you think your last breath will feel like, Danny?

498. There's a woman, MI5...

499. They already have MI5.

500. Not this one. She's like us - works in secret, trusts no-one.

501. She can help.

502. Now, Jess, if you get me the manuscript, I can get it to her.

503. What's her name?

504. Please don't make me tell you that, Jessica.

505. Milner.

506. Her name's Milner.

507. She's a good woman, Jessica.

508. Ian, we need a vehicle. You've seen me enough times.

509. It's time for you to do it.

510. Why didn't he give it to you?

511. Bit odd.

512. I'm on your side, Jessica, you know that.

513. I'm one of the...

514. If we found him, they would.

515. He gave up Milner's name like that. You saw what they did to Wilson.

516. So you just killed him?

517. - I pulled up the ladder. - What?

518. You fucking killed him! You took his life!

519. So, what, you just kill people if they're not convenient, is that it?
