1. You look like you're
doing all right.Copy !req
2. Father Time has
his way with us all.Copy !req
3. Looks like you must
have pissed him off.Copy !req
4. Ahem.Copy !req
5. Why we here?Copy !req
6. I got a thingCopy !req
7. the State PD's asking about.Copy !req
8. The Lake Charles murder.Copy !req
9. I mean, shouldn't it
have been in the paperCopy !req
10. to draw a line somewhere by now?Copy !req
11. I mean, we can't trust them.Copy !req
12. And, I mean, if they're gonna
cover something like that up,Copy !req
13. who knows what else
they've covered up?Copy !req
14. What you think?Copy !req
15. I think you don't look
particularly healthy.Copy !req
16. Listening to you talk,Copy !req
17. your eyes, you seemCopy !req
18. kind of brittle, Rust.Copy !req
19. Most of the last decade
I spent stone-drunk.Copy !req
20. Functional, but hammered.Copy !req
21. Went back to Alaska,Copy !req
22. spent 8 years working
fishing boats, bars.Copy !req
23. Oh, I thought you didn't like the cold.
I hate it.Copy !req
24. And then I come back here to Louisiana
for the first time in 2010.Copy !req
25. And why is that?Copy !req
26. The same reason I'm sitting
across the table from you now.Copy !req
27. A man remembers his debts.Copy !req
28. I don't dwell on the past.Copy !req
29. Well, it must be nice.Copy !req
30. I'm not interested in whatever
it is you think you owe me.Copy !req
31. Oh, I don't owe you.Copy !req
32. We left something undone.Copy !req
33. We got to fix it,Copy !req
34. and I've been working
on this for two years.Copy !req
35. Me, myself.Copy !req
36. Never called you, I never
bothered you with it...Copy !req
37. Yeah, why would you? Shit,
man, what did you do?Copy !req
38. Alienate every other
person in your life,Copy !req
39. and then finally you came
back to me in the rotation?Copy !req
40. You know, not for nothing, but if you
wouldn't have clipped Ledoux back then,Copy !req
41. we might have got the whole
fucking story out of him.Copy !req
42. You know, I think I'm gonna
finish this beer and say so long.Copy !req
43. Now, I'm not much of
a drinker nowadays.Copy !req
44. In fact, I hadn't had a drop in
3 weeks till I ran into you.Copy !req
45. Well, I don't need you
to drink, Marty.Copy !req
46. I need you to help me.
Why would I?Copy !req
47. They say you can't
account for your time.Copy !req
48. They got eyewitnesses
placing youCopy !req
49. at the Lake Charles crime scene.Copy !req
50. You got some storage shed that
you won't let them look at.Copy !req
51. That's right.
Why not?Copy !req
52. Why not shoot straight with them?
You're innocent.Copy !req
53. Help them stop
wasting their time.Copy !req
54. Fucking since when did guilt and
innocence define the State PD, huh?Copy !req
55. Come the fuck on.Copy !req
56. Now, I don't know the sprawl
of this thing, all right?Copy !req
57. The people I'm after,
they're all fucking over.Copy !req
58. They're in a lot
of different things,Copy !req
59. pieces, family trees.Copy !req
60. The only way for you
to understandCopy !req
61. what I'm on to here
is for me to show you.Copy !req
62. You got to come see what I got.Copy !req
63. No. You know what?Copy !req
64. I don't think I've been
very clear with you, Rust.Copy !req
65. If you were drowning,Copy !req
66. I'd throw you a fucking barbell.Copy !req
67. Why would I ever help you?Copy !req
68. Because you have a debt.Copy !req
69. You got some fucking sack.Copy !req
70. What's that mean,
I have a debt, huh?Copy !req
71. Means the way
shit went down in '95,Copy !req
72. this is on you, too, buddy.Copy !req
73. What do you got to show me?Copy !req
74. What you packing?Copy !req
75. .38.Copy !req
76. Hollow-point?Copy !req
77. Yeah.Copy !req
78. That'd do it.Copy !req
79. You never be too careful.Copy !req
80. All right.Copy !req
81. Remember, there was
no physical evidenceCopy !req
82. connecting Dora Lange
to Ledoux's placeCopy !req
83. out in the woods, meaning it
probably didn't happen out there.Copy !req
84. Nobody was in a hurry
to bring that up.Copy !req
85. Two... women and children
gone missing,Copy !req
86. all taken from areas
within a 10-mile radiusCopy !req
87. of schools that were funded by
Tuttle's Wellspring initiative.Copy !req
88. We establish a connection.Copy !req
89. Who's in, who's out, you know?Copy !req
90. I mean, do people disappear in equal
numbers in other parts of the state?Copy !req
91. How many schools were there? 14.Copy !req
92. Now, I've covered
a surface area.Copy !req
93. I pulled runaways in stateCopy !req
94. and missing persons,
and if you'll notice,Copy !req
95. there's twice as many along the bayous.
I don't know why.Copy !req
96. Hell, someone should do
a study as to why.Copy !req
97. Well, now you're just
throwing up stats.Copy !req
98. Why was Tuttle so interested
in the Lange case, huh?Copy !req
99. Remember Charlie Lange
said what Ledoux told him?Copy !req
100. Said there's a group
of men, sacrifices.Copy !req
101. Well, I think Tuttle
recognized the scene.Copy !req
102. That's why he came down there jiminy
quick with a fucking task force,Copy !req
103. and that's why he tripped out
when I talked to him in '02.Copy !req
104. OK, so what happened to him?Copy !req
105. I mean, I'm looking around here,Copy !req
106. and I don't see or hear anythingCopy !req
107. that doesn't make this
all conjectural.Copy !req
108. 1988.Copy !req
109. Accusations of child molestationCopy !req
110. at a preschool funded by Tuttle.Copy !req
111. Name of that school
is Shepherd's Flock.Copy !req
112. It shuts down, reopens two
years later on Pelican IslandCopy !req
113. under the name Light
of the Way Academy,Copy !req
114. where Rianne Olivier went.Copy !req
115. And I got an enrollment
list... 16 kids in the class.Copy !req
116. One of them turned out to be a
young man who'd just showed upCopy !req
117. for solicitation in New Orleans.Copy !req
118. Now, this is 2010.Copy !req
119. His name is Toby Boelert.Copy !req
120. Goes by the name
of Johnny Joanie.Copy !req
121. Shepherd's Flock?Copy !req
122. Why are you asking me
about that place?Copy !req
123. You know, after that place shut down,
there was a lot of talk going around.Copy !req
124. You ever see that reverend...Copy !req
125. Billy Lee Tuttle, around?Copy !req
126. You know, I think so, but
who can remember way back?Copy !req
127. That's how it all started.Copy !req
128. Memory be fucked.Copy !req
129. I decided it all had
to be a dream anyways,Copy !req
130. and I don't remember if it...Copy !req
131. We'd go to sleep,Copy !req
132. only sometimes I didn't
feel like I was asleep.Copy !req
133. I felt like I was still awake,
but I must have been asleepCopy !req
134. because I couldn't move.Copy !req
135. Just... sort of see
under my eyelids.Copy !req
136. And what?Copy !req
137. I don't know.Copy !req
138. There were men...Copy !req
139. taking pictures.Copy !req
140. Sometimes...Copy !req
141. other things.Copy !req
142. Who were they?Copy !req
143. I don't know.Copy !req
144. They had animal faces.Copy !req
145. That's why I decided
it had to be a dream.Copy !req
146. They had animal faces, well,
it had to be a dream.Copy !req
147. Any other kids see this?Copy !req
148. One girl.Copy !req
149. I don't remember her name.Copy !req
150. She first started
talking about it.Copy !req
151. And she seen it, too, the faces.Copy !req
152. I do not remember her name.Copy !req
153. Marie Fontenot?Copy !req
154. Maybe.Copy !req
155. You ever see any of
these men's faces?Copy !req
156. Once.Copy !req
157. They didn't all have
animal faces.Copy !req
158. Three younger men.
I don't remember them.Copy !req
159. Just one.Copy !req
160. He had bad scars
all around his mouth,Copy !req
161. like the bottom half
got all burned up.Copy !req
162. You know what?Copy !req
163. I thought that man,
he was a dream, too.Copy !req
164. No, I don't think
he was a dream.Copy !req
165. I don't understand.Copy !req
166. Are you saying that you thinkCopy !req
167. that this hypothetical killerCopy !req
168. was, uh, an old schoolteacher?Copy !req
169. Or it might what,
involve State PD?Copy !req
170. Goddamn. What happened
to you, man?Copy !req
171. Remember him? Hmm?Copy !req
172. Yeah.Copy !req
173. Yeah. You and I were on
the case in Erath.Copy !req
174. Girl comes forward and says she
was chased through the woodsCopy !req
175. by a spaghetti monster
with green ears.Copy !req
176. Now, I think
that this is our manCopy !req
177. with the scars on his face.Copy !req
178. We got 3 references
17 years ago: that oldCopy !req
179. revival church said a tall
man with scars came through,Copy !req
180. Kelly Reider in the hospital,Copy !req
181. and now this hooker
from the quarter... Toby.Copy !req
182. I don't know who he is, I don't know
where he is, I don't know whereCopy !req
183. this whole thing fucking
starts, but it ends with him.Copy !req
184. All right, you know the little
township down around Erath?Copy !req
185. All right, that's where the
Tuttle family is from.Copy !req
186. Now, it used to be
a pirate hideout,Copy !req
187. then turned into
plantations and whatnot.Copy !req
188. Had a very rural
sense of Mardi Gras,Copy !req
189. uh, you know, the men on
horses, animals masks, such.Copy !req
190. Courir de Mardi Gras.
That's right.Copy !req
191. Now, they had an annual
winter festival.Copy !req
192. Went heavy on the
Saturnalia, a place whereCopy !req
193. that Santeria and Voudon
all mash together.Copy !req
194. Have a look.Copy !req
195. From the winter festival.Copy !req
196. Blindfold...Copy !req
197. antlers, mask.Copy !req
198. I got these from a series
an artist did in Kenner,Copy !req
199. right after Katrina.Copy !req
200. Says he kept running across
these "stick things,"Copy !req
201. as he called them.Copy !req
202. Look familiar?Copy !req
203. Think our man had a real good
time after the hurricane...Copy !req
204. chaos,Copy !req
205. people missing, and people gone.Copy !req
206. Cops gone.Copy !req
207. I think he had a real good year.Copy !req
208. What do you need me for?Copy !req
209. You
got friends on the force.Copy !req
210. You have access that
I don't, databases.Copy !req
211. I need case files.Copy !req
212. I need missing persons.
I need homicides.Copy !req
213. I need title transfers,
auto and home.Copy !req
214. I got a list of names.Copy !req
215. I'm gonna need background
checks, tax records,Copy !req
216. anything we can get on Ledoux.Copy !req
217. Jesus Christ, man.Copy !req
218. I wouldn't have called you and I
wouldn't have fucking bothered youCopy !req
219. if State wouldn't have pulled me
in on this Lake Charles case.Copy !req
220. Well, if you need help,
why don't you justCopy !req
221. give it to Papania and Gilbough?Copy !req
222. No, they may be pawns in this thing
and not even fucking know it.Copy !req
223. Come on.
Look, Eddie Tuttle isCopy !req
224. the goddamn senator
of this state.Copy !req
225. The late Reverend Billy
Lee Tuttle is his cousin.Copy !req
226. I'm telling you, it's
a fucking family thing.Copy !req
227. That's what I mean when I
talk about the sprawl, Marty!Copy !req
228. Eddie Tuttle's the reason that the Lake
Charles thing never made the wire.Copy !req
229. Look, man, you have
some compelling stuff hereCopy !req
230. and you might have something,Copy !req
231. but...Copy !req
232. all this... this...Copy !req
233. the "sprawl," as you call it,
which I would call conjecture,Copy !req
234. this shit about the
Tuttles, the State PD.Copy !req
235. Do you know how fucking
crazy that sounds?Copy !req
236. It's like you've been
alone too long, you know,Copy !req
237. like you maybe told
yourself this storyCopy !req
238. and kept drinking
until you believed it.Copy !req
239. Marty...Copy !req
240. I had my time where I wondered
if this was all in my head.Copy !req
241. That time passed.Copy !req
242. Really?Copy !req
243. What happened
to Billy Lee Tuttle?Copy !req
244. There's something you're
gonna have to look at.Copy !req
245. No other way around it.Copy !req
246. You still take
your coffee black?Copy !req
247. Oh, uh, green tea,
if you have it.Copy !req
248. I've been trying to stay
away from coffee,Copy !req
249. you know,
a little bit healthier.Copy !req
250. So, Mace... is she, uh,
back from Chicago yet?Copy !req
251. Mm-hmm,
3 months ago.Copy !req
252. 3 months.Copy !req
253. Uh... and what
was it, that...Copy !req
254. Americorps.Copy !req
255. Oh.
Teaching.Copy !req
256. And Audrey,
how... how's she?Copy !req
257. She's fine, at the moment.Copy !req
258. She sometimes decides she
doesn't need her meds.Copy !req
259. I like her boyfriend.Copy !req
260. He watches out for her.Copy !req
261. She had an art show
in New Orleans,Copy !req
262. sold some paintings.Copy !req
263. Oh, that's good.
That's great.Copy !req
264. I should buy one,Copy !req
265. I mean, if I can afford it.Copy !req
266. So the reason I, uh...Copy !req
267. I mean, like I said
on the phone, I...Copy !req
268. I want to ask you
about those cops.Copy !req
269. They just wanted to know
about you and Rust.Copy !req
270. Mostly Rust.Copy !req
271. They wanted to know aboutCopy !req
272. the fight in '02.Copy !req
273. Mmm, did you tell them?Copy !req
274. No...Copy !req
275. but they think Rust
did something.Copy !req
276. I know.Copy !req
277. He didn't.Copy !req
278. I didn't think he did.Copy !req
279. Have you...
talked to him?Copy !req
280. No, not since.Copy !req
281. Have you?Copy !req
282. Yeah, I mean, after
they brought me in.Copy !req
283. Yeah.Copy !req
284. How is he?Copy !req
285. Different, same.Copy !req
286. I mean, he's lived roughCopy !req
287. for a long time now.Copy !req
288. He always did, it seemed like.Copy !req
289. Taken a toll.Copy !req
290. He needs my help.Copy !req
291. Are you gonna help him?Copy !req
292. Yes.Copy !req
293. Why?Copy !req
294. I have to.Copy !req
295. Well, what is it? What do
the police think he did?Copy !req
296. I can't talk about that.
It's PI stuff.Copy !req
297. He's hiring the firm,
I'm hiring him.Copy !req
298. All this time, you two,Copy !req
299. and just...
just like that?Copy !req
300. Oh, I took some convincing.Copy !req
301. I looked
in Billy's eyes.Copy !req
302. He looked in mine.Copy !req
303. He got me suspended.Copy !req
304. Now,
Billy Lee TuttleCopy !req
305. owns 3 houses in Louisiana.Copy !req
306. One in Shreveport,
one in Baton Rouge,Copy !req
307. one in New Orleans.Copy !req
308. Also one in Florida.Copy !req
309. I waited till he went on his
spring ministry tour, 2010...Copy !req
310. Look, Rust, I changed my mind.Copy !req
311. If you did something, I don't
want to hear about it.Copy !req
312. Remember I told you about
my stint in robbery?Copy !req
313. I make a pretty ace B&E man.Copy !req
314. Now, I staked
his places out for weeks.Copy !req
315. Checked surveillance,
map security.Copy !req
316. I found ingresses.
Now, here I am, you know.Copy !req
317. My whole life is just one
expanding, circular fuck-upCopy !req
318. and I think it's about to close out with
me getting clipped in a home invasion.Copy !req
319. I mean, what I'm saying is I was aware
that I might have lost my mind.Copy !req
320. But after the second home...Copy !req
321. doubt got taken behind
the woodshed and put down.Copy !req
322. Notice he never reported
the Baton Rouge break-in,Copy !req
323. just the Shreveport house.Copy !req
324. Found those in the safe there.Copy !req
325. Paper stock's over 15 years old.Copy !req
326. Goddamn it.Copy !req
327. These...
they aren't as badCopy !req
328. if you don't know what
you're looking at.Copy !req
329. Motherfuck.Copy !req
330. And...Copy !req
331. there's a videotape.Copy !req
332. Take a look.Copy !req
333. No!Copy !req
334. God!Copy !req
335. Jesus!Copy !req
336. Ohh!Copy !req
337. Fuck!Copy !req
338. Fuck!Copy !req
339. You watch all of that?Copy !req
340. Yeah.Copy !req
341. Yeah, I had to, see if any of
the men took off their mask.Copy !req
342. None did.Copy !req
343. Oh, fuck.Copy !req
344. I won't avert my eyes.Copy !req
345. Not again.Copy !req
346. Jesus Christ.Copy !req
347. That little girl is
Marie Fontenot.Copy !req
348. Did you kill Tuttle?Copy !req
349. No.Copy !req
350. I assume thatCopy !req
351. he was thinking he was
gonna be blackmailed.Copy !req
352. And I think some people took
him out after they found outCopy !req
353. what was taken from the safe,
before he had a chance to.Copy !req
354. What... can I do to help?Copy !req
355. We start by pulling everything
there is on Dora Lange.Copy !req
356. And I got names,Copy !req
357. I got family members,
Tuttle connections.Copy !req
358. Any information that we can getCopy !req
359. on Reggie or Dewall Ledoux.Copy !req
360. All right, we can coordinate
out of your officesCopy !req
361. if you want.Copy !req
362. You shouldn't have that.Copy !req
363. Nobody should have this.Copy !req
364. I'm glad that you're
doing good, Maggie.Copy !req
365. It seems like everybody's
happy, you know.Copy !req
366. It's... ahem.Copy !req
367. It's good to see.Copy !req
368. Thank youCopy !req
369. for everything.Copy !req
370. I haven't seen you in
over two years, Marty.Copy !req
371. Did you come here
to say good-bye?Copy !req
372. Thank you, Maggie.Copy !req
373. I mean that.Copy !req
374. There's not gonna be
a bunch of peopleCopy !req
375. coming in and out of
this place, is there?Copy !req
376. What do you think, Rust?Copy !req
377. Practical terms, we're
doing an identify and locate.Copy !req
378. Now, I can't afford
to subscribe to allCopy !req
379. the databases that I used to,Copy !req
380. but I got Auto Track XPCopy !req
381. for motor vehicle records.Copy !req
382. I got Flat Rate InfoCopy !req
383. for the QI National
People Locator,Copy !req
384. public records, of course.Copy !req
385. All right.Copy !req
386. That sounds good.Copy !req
387. How you been? Ahem.Copy !req
388. You know, besides work,Copy !req
389. what do you do?Copy !req
390. I'm sorry, I just... I don't
ever remember you asking meCopy !req
391. a personal question before.Copy !req
392. Uh... you know,Copy !req
393. I just stay busy, uh,Copy !req
394. fish, girlfriends.Copy !req
395. You seeing anybody?Copy !req
396. Not really.
Some dates.Copy !req
397. You know, it's all
pretty casual.Copy !req
398. I did have something
going for a while,Copy !req
399. this Filipino girl,
but that didn't pan out.Copy !req
400. Quiet life. I don't stay out late.
I just... I go home.Copy !req
401. You?Copy !req
402. Ah,
I'm about the same.Copy !req
403. No girlfriend.Copy !req
404. Just go to work, go home.Copy !req
405. How about that girl
you were seeing in '02?Copy !req
406. What ever happened with her?Copy !req
407. Yeah, that was never gonna last.Copy !req
408. Never should have started.Copy !req
409. Yeah. Boy.Copy !req
410. She, uh, she had problems.Copy !req
411. Oh, you always liked them crazy.Copy !req
412. Yeah, that I did.Copy !req
413. Why'd you quit, Marty?Copy !req
414. Yeah, you could have
been boss, you know.Copy !req
415. LT, at least, captain.Copy !req
416. I did another 4 years
after you left, and I...Copy !req
417. I guess the job just kind
of ran its course with me.Copy !req
418. How is that?Copy !req
419. I was gonna play
baseball, ride bulls.Copy !req
420. You know, you end up becomingCopy !req
421. something you never intended.Copy !req
422. Uh, I guess you never
really even know why.Copy !req
423. I suppose I could
have been a painter,Copy !req
424. you know, a historian.Copy !req
425. Old scenes, new details.Copy !req
426. Yeah, yeah. You do
much painting?Copy !req
427. Nah.Copy !req
428. Little late in the game to start
something like that, I reckon.Copy !req
429. Life's barely long enough
to get good at one thing.Copy !req
430. If that long.Copy !req
431. Yeah, so be careful
what you get good at.Copy !req
432. What do you call a
black man who flies a plane?Copy !req
433. I don't know.Copy !req
434. Pilot, you racist bastard.Copy !req
435. What else would you call him?Copy !req
436. Well, speaking of, you know, I
been taking some writing courses?Copy !req
437. Heh heh!
And, uh... no.Copy !req
438. I have, and I been
tinkering aroundCopy !req
439. with this thing off and on.Copy !req
440. True crime.Copy !req
441. And that's the genre,
not the title.Copy !req
442. You serious?
Yeah.Copy !req
443. You know, what happened in '95
and some other old cases,Copy !req
444. and all I need from you, Bobby,Copy !req
445. is some old copies
of case files.Copy !req
446. You still like your
single malt, don't you?Copy !req
447. Ah, I guess I do.Copy !req
448. Oh, business gotten so bad
you got to become a writer?Copy !req
449. Nope, I've always wanted to do it.
I just never had the time.Copy !req
450. And regards the files, I'd
like to avoid Fuck and Suck,Copy !req
451. the two dicks I spent
last Saturday with.Copy !req
452. Hmm. Papania
and Gilbough.Copy !req
453. I hear ya.Copy !req
454. 'Course, man.
Whatever you need.Copy !req
455. Ah!Copy !req
456. Appreciate it, Bobby.Copy !req
457. Not a problem.Copy !req
458. Missing persons, mostly.Copy !req
459. Maybe far back as the eighties.Copy !req
460. Well, anything
before '05 that neverCopy !req
461. became part of an
official investigation,Copy !req
462. it isn't gonna be
in the computers.Copy !req
463. You're gonna have to
sort through the files.Copy !req
464. Thank you.Copy !req
465. Found something,
background.Copy !req
466. Dewall Ledoux transferred
title on a truckCopy !req
467. to a Jimmy Ledoux.Copy !req
468. Appears like that
might be a cousin.Copy !req
469. I found him in White Castle.Copy !req
470. Owns an auto shop.Copy !req
471. All right.Copy !req
472. Did you pull that
Marie Fontenot file?Copy !req
473. There wasn't one.Copy !req
474. Report's gone.
Backtracking that.Copy !req
475. Marty, this is Robert Doumain.
He owns the place.Copy !req
476. Hey, how's it going?Copy !req
477. Nice spot.Copy !req
478. He's not a cop no more, Robert.Copy !req
479. You got something
against cops?Copy !req
480. Bob had a little boy.Copy !req
481. Been missing since '85.Copy !req
482. Sorry.Copy !req
483. Jimmy Ledoux
came up spotless...Copy !req
484. 3 kids, wife's a teacher.Copy !req
485. He coaches his boys'
pee-wee football team.Copy !req
486. Any relation?Copy !req
487. So many Ledouxs around, I never
had to worry about a connection.Copy !req
488. But, yeah, my dad's second
cousin or something.Copy !req
489. My pops didn't like them none.Copy !req
490. Said they weren't white
enough to be white trash.Copy !req
491. What's this about, exactly?Copy !req
492. Man asked us
to locate his daughter.Copy !req
493. It was a long time ago, but it looks
like she might have known Dewall.Copy !req
494. Sorry
to hear that.Copy !req
495. Must know what happened to them.Copy !req
496. Sick shits.Copy !req
497. Pop said they died too quick.Copy !req
498. Is there anything you remember
that you can tell us about these guys?Copy !req
499. Just they were nuts.
Looked at you funky.Copy !req
500. Reggie was always asking about
the girls in my school,Copy !req
501. and couple times I saw Dewall,
he just said kooky stuff.Copy !req
502. Any chance you ever saw
a third man with them,Copy !req
503. a man who had a bunch of scarsCopy !req
504. on the bottom of his face?Copy !req
505. It's weird you say that.Copy !req
506. I remember that face.Copy !req
507. My pop let them use
our deer camp once.Copy !req
508. Took me with him.
I was, like, 11.Copy !req
509. They were maybe 10
years older than me.Copy !req
510. They introduced us to the guy.Copy !req
511. His face, underneath
his nose and cheeks,Copy !req
512. scarred.Copy !req
513. Gave me funny looks all night.Copy !req
514. Every time I glanced
at him, staring at me.Copy !req
515. Any chance this man with the
scars was another Ledoux?Copy !req
516. No. I don't know.
I don't think so.Copy !req
517. Next morning, men were too hung-over
to hunt. Pop and I went home.Copy !req
518. You, uh, ever see him
again, guy with the scars?Copy !req
519. Never again.Copy !req
520. I'd remember.Copy !req
521. Fuck, I don't like this place.Copy !req
522. Nothing grows in
the right direction.Copy !req
523. Where'd this woman come from?Copy !req
524. Tax records.Copy !req
525. Drew a paycheck from
Tuttle's father.Copy !req
526. Uh, some kind of domestic.Copy !req
527. How'd you find her?Copy !req
528. Well, had to get federal
income tax recordsCopy !req
529. from '40 to '59.Copy !req
530. I matched Social
with a credit check runCopy !req
531. in the late ninetiesCopy !req
532. for Section-8 housing
in Alexandria.Copy !req
533. Mmm, good job.Copy !req
534. Look at you. Heh!
Hmm.Copy !req
535. High praise from a bartender.Copy !req
536. Cops.Copy !req
537. She gets tired easy,Copy !req
538. 'specially hot as it is.Copy !req
539. Now, I don't understand
what this is about.Copy !req
540. Thank you.Copy !req
541. We're private investigators,Copy !req
542. hired to do, uh,
ancestral research.Copy !req
543. M-mineral rights
along the coast.Copy !req
544. Hmm.Copy !req
545. I never knew them Tuttle
people, but I heard stories.Copy !req
546. No, thank you.Copy !req
547. You think she might get
some money out this?Copy !req
548. Uh, quite possible.Copy !req
549. Depends on what we find out.Copy !req
550. Miss Delores?Copy !req
551. You worked
for Mr. Sam TuttleCopy !req
552. 19 years, right?Copy !req
553. Yes.Copy !req
554. Erath.Copy !req
555. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
556. Then Shreveport.Copy !req
557. So you knew his son,
Billy Lee, right?Copy !req
558. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
559. A cousin, Eddie?Copy !req
560. Little boys, mm-hmm.
I remember.Copy !req
561. What about extended family?Copy !req
562. Cousins, you know, that might
have been close to the boys?Copy !req
563. Those days,
families were bigger.Copy !req
564. Oh, all sorts of brothers,
cousins, kids just running around.Copy !req
565. Did, uh,
Sam Tuttle haveCopy !req
566. kids outside his marriage
that you know about?Copy !req
567. Hmm!
Don't you know it.Copy !req
568. Now, people kept
their own back then.Copy !req
569. I mean, a man's house
was his own.Copy !req
570. Mr. Sam?Copy !req
571. He had lots of children.Copy !req
572. All types.Copy !req
573. He didn't like a woman...Copy !req
574. See, once she had it
done to her,Copy !req
575. he didn't like them
but that one time.Copy !req
576. Not after that.Copy !req
577. Hmm, and out of all these
kids running around,Copy !req
578. you remember one
that maybe had scarsCopy !req
579. all across the
bottom of his face?Copy !req
580. I... I think that was
Mr. Sam's grandchild.Copy !req
581. His daddy did that
to him, that poor boy.Copy !req
582. I... I think that child
was a... a ChildressCopy !req
583. or what, Fi, he was
a LeBeau or a Childress?Copy !req
584. From Mr. Sam's
other family?Copy !req
585. I shouldn't be talking
to you about this.Copy !req
586. That's OK.Copy !req
587. Miss Delores.Copy !req
588. Could you have a look at
something for me? One thing.Copy !req
589. Just have a look.
See if you recognize it.Copy !req
590. You know Carcosa?Copy !req
591. What is it?Copy !req
592. Him who eats time.Copy !req
593. Him robes...Copy !req
594. it's a wind of invisible voices.Copy !req
595. FI: Mineral rights, my ass.
What you all doing?Copy !req
596. Rejoice.Copy !req
597. Death is not the end.Copy !req
598. Rejoice.
FI: You need to leave, now.Copy !req
599. Death is not the end.
You need to leave.Copy !req
600. You know Carcosa?Copy !req
601. You rejoice.Copy !req
602. Carcosa.Copy !req
603. Rest of the family, they
don't really talk to Aunt D.Copy !req
604. She crazy.Copy !req
605. Dementia.Copy !req
606. She never had any kind
of good life,Copy !req
607. but most days, she can't
even make sense.Copy !req
608. Yeah? She sure
made sense to me.Copy !req
609. That should worry you, mister.Copy !req
610. Sure hope that
old lady was wrong.Copy !req
611. About what?Copy !req
612. About death not being
the end of it.Copy !req
613. Did some backtracking
on the Marie Fontenot stuff.Copy !req
614. Got some old sheets.Copy !req
615. Sheriff signed off on
the "report made in error,"Copy !req
616. but he didn't take the
original complaint on her.Copy !req
617. Deputy did.Copy !req
618. Got a name?Copy !req
619. You ain't gonna
believe this shit.Copy !req
620. Steve Geraci.Copy !req
621. So I did some
double-checking.Copy !req
622. Before CID, he was with
Vermillion Parish Sheriff's.Copy !req
623. Erath was his beat.Copy !req
624. If it got covered up,
Steve might know something.Copy !req
625. Didn't say a fucking word when
we asked about it in '95.Copy !req
626. Oh, I never did like
that cocksucker.Copy !req
627. Where is he now?Copy !req
628. Well, uh, this is the thing.Copy !req
629. He's from Iberia originally.Copy !req
630. After CID, he went home.Copy !req
631. He's Sheriff of Iberia Parish.Copy !req
632. Shit.Copy !req
633. Yeah.Copy !req
634. Rust, the only person
can arrest the sheriffCopy !req
635. in this state is the governor.Copy !req
636. Well, we ain't looking
to arrest him, Marty,Copy !req
637. just have a little chat.Copy !req
638. Well, he ain't
gonna talk with you.Copy !req
639. I got a car battery and two
jumper cables argue different.Copy !req
640. Don't even start with that shit.Copy !req
641. What do you recommend, Marty?Copy !req
642. Well, fuck, why don't
you talk to him?Copy !req
643. You two always liked each other.Copy !req
644. Well, what can I say?
I'm a people person.Copy !req
645. Well, start with that, then.Copy !req
646. Oh.Copy !req
647. Oh, come on.Copy !req
648. Just try to relax.
Take your time.Copy !req
649. There you go.Copy !req
650. OK.
Nice shot.Copy !req
651. What was that, 15 on the green?Copy !req
652. Ha ha ha!
I don't know.Copy !req
653. Hey, you know, on the phone,Copy !req
654. you were saying something
about that Fontenot girl.Copy !req
655. Yeah. Why's that on your radar?Copy !req
656. Oh, it's nothing.
It's just, uh,Copy !req
657. extended family wants a locate.Copy !req
658. I didn't remember at the time.Copy !req
659. Back in '95,Copy !req
660. I was hitting the
bottle a lot back then.Copy !req
661. Yeah, who wasn't?Copy !req
662. 20 years ago, you know.Copy !req
663. My recall,Copy !req
664. girl's mom was single,Copy !req
665. drug charges.Copy !req
666. Uh...Copy !req
667. Little girl went to live
with her birth daddy,Copy !req
668. I think.Copy !req
669. That is, if I'm
remembering right.Copy !req
670. Uh, Mama didn't make
a fuss afterCopy !req
671. the first notice,
so she was fine with it.Copy !req
672. And you talked to the
family directly back then?Copy !req
673. No. Ted Childress, the sheriff.
He knew them.Copy !req
674. Childress?Copy !req
675. Now watch this.Copy !req
676. Whew!Copy !req
677. You like that?Copy !req
678. Seized it off a good old boy,
had a quarter-bag of weed.Copy !req
679. Ooh. You got to love
this country.Copy !req
680. Good to see you again, man.Copy !req
681. Good to see you.Copy !req
682. Hey, uh,Copy !req
683. that client you got,Copy !req
684. asking about the Fontenot girl.Copy !req
685. You let them know I'll be
happy to talk to them.Copy !req
686. Oh, yeah, distant relatives.Copy !req
687. St. Louis. Trying to
settle a tiny inheritance.Copy !req
688. Don't worry about it.Copy !req
689. OK.Copy !req
690. Well, they want to talk,
you let them know.Copy !req
691. Yeah. Don't go
too fast, Sheriff.Copy !req
692. Not me.Copy !req
693. Let's do it again sometime.Copy !req
694. Yeah, I'd like that.Copy !req
695. Hey.Copy !req
696. Better get those
jumper cables ready.Copy !req
697. The motherfucker's lying.Copy !req
698. Rust.Copy !req
699. It's good to see you.Copy !req
700. Bullshit.Copy !req
701. I talked to Marty.Copy !req
702. I hear you talked
to the cops, too.Copy !req
703. Yes, them, too.Copy !req
704. How are you?Copy !req
705. What'd Marty tell you?Copy !req
706. He wanted to know what
the police asked me about.Copy !req
707. He said he was helping you
with something. That's it.Copy !req
708. How long you been back?Copy !req
709. Hear you got a big house.Copy !req
710. Marty says the girls
are doing fine.Copy !req
711. That's good.Copy !req
712. Rust,Copy !req
713. just tell me it's something
that's not gonna get him hurt.Copy !req
714. Well, I can't tell you that.Copy !req
715. It never sat right with me,Copy !req
716. and it doesn't now, you asking
me to lie to you about him.Copy !req
717. Now, get on out of here.Copy !req
718. You're classing the place up.Copy !req
719. Why'd you quit, Marty?Copy !req
720. What's the real reason?
What happened?Copy !req
721. You tell me why you
come back, for real.Copy !req
722. Mmm, you first.Copy !req
723. Why'd you quit?Copy !req
724. Well, I saw something.Copy !req
725. Baby.Copy !req
726. Tweaker
tried to dry the kidCopy !req
727. in a microwave.Copy !req
728. Saw that, what he'd done,
and I thought...Copy !req
729. never again.Copy !req
730. I thought I... I never
want to lookCopy !req
731. at anything like that anymore.Copy !req
732. Ahem.Copy !req
733. Your turn.Copy !req
734. Why'd you, uh,
why'd you come back?Copy !req
735. This.Copy !req
736. Something I had to see to...Copy !req
737. before getting on
with something else.Copy !req
738. My life's been a circleCopy !req
739. of violence and degradationCopy !req
740. long as I can remember.Copy !req
741. I'm ready to tie it off.Copy !req
742. See you on the boat.Copy !req
743. After the other day,
I was thinking,Copy !req
744. "Why don't I see Steve
and the boys more?"Copy !req
745. Ain't been out
to my camp in a while.Copy !req
746. You know, if I
don't get out hereCopy !req
747. 3, 4 times a year...Copy !req
748. I'm a basket case.Copy !req
749. I hear ya.Copy !req
750. Ah.Copy !req
751. I do love a reason to drink beerCopy !req
752. first thing in the morning.Copy !req
753. Oh.Copy !req
754. Say, Steve, mmm,Copy !req
755. I been wanting to ask,Copy !req
756. you know that Fontenot girl?Copy !req
757. Remember, going off
with her daddy?Copy !req
758. I... I just wasn't clear.Copy !req
759. Was it you knew for a factCopy !req
760. that she went with her daddy,Copy !req
761. or somebody told you that
that's what happened?Copy !req
762. The family talked to
Sheriff Childress.Copy !req
763. The girl's aunt and uncle,Copy !req
764. he knew them.Copy !req
765. Mm-hmm.Copy !req
766. Who were they?Copy !req
767. Starting to think
this wasn't justCopy !req
768. a friendly invitation
from an old pal, huh?Copy !req
769. It's definitely that.Copy !req
770. Well, then try this, then.Copy !req
771. I said all I remember
about the girl.Copy !req
772. Let's just have a good
time, and don't ask again.Copy !req
773. I'm with you 150% on that.Copy !req
774. All right.Copy !req
775. Thing is, Steve...Copy !req
776. I ain't gonna ask you.Copy !req
777. He is.Copy !req
778. No, I wouldn't
if I was you, Steve.Copy !req
779. You're out of
your jurisdiction, Sheriff.Copy !req
780. You realize who I am
now, you assholes?Copy !req
781. Yeah, I wouldn't
be here if I didn't.Copy !req
782. Marty.Copy !req
783. Don't look at me. I ain't never
been able to control him.Copy !req
784. Come on.Copy !req
785. But you're
done after this.Copy !req
786. I'll have boss crackers
splitting your ass in Angola.Copy !req
787. Yeah,
we'll talk about that,Copy !req
788. and some other things.Copy !req
789. Come on.Copy !req
790. That church Cohle talked
about's supposed to be right here.Copy !req
791. We're lost.
We're not lost.Copy !req
792. We're going in the right direction.
We're heading south.Copy !req
793. And that's gonna head us to 49?Copy !req
794. No, we're not
looking for the 49.Copy !req
795. We're looking for the church.Copy !req
796. I know we're looking for the
church; we ain't got to no church.Copy !req
797. Ain't seen nothing that
even resemble no church.Copy !req
798. Ain't nobody out here to
even ask where anything is.Copy !req
799. Let me know when you see something.
There ain't nothing to see.Copy !req
800. Hey! Hey!Copy !req
801. Yes, sir?Copy !req
802. You know there's a little
church around here?Copy !req
803. Pretty old?
Black minister?Copy !req
804. You must mean Son of Life, sir.Copy !req
805. That place shut down.Copy !req
806. '05, I think, just after
all them hurricanes.Copy !req
807. Mmm.Copy !req
808. You live around here?Copy !req
809. No, sir.
I live in St. Martin.Copy !req
810. Got a parish contract.Copy !req
811. Take care of some cemeteries,Copy !req
812. public schools.Copy !req
813. All right. Thanks.Copy !req
814. Hey, you know how to
get to 49 from here?Copy !req
815. Sure.Copy !req
816. About a half-mile,
you'll see a left.Copy !req
817. PR 1435.Copy !req
818. Take that.Copy !req
819. About... 7 miles
of fields.Copy !req
820. You'll hit 49 before Crowley.Copy !req
821. Know your way around, huh?Copy !req
822. Oh, yeah, boss.Copy !req
823. I know the whole coast.
My family...Copy !req
824. Thanks.Copy !req
825. My family's been here
a long, long time.Copy !req
