1. You can be anyone you wanna be on the internet.

2. Criminals can conceal themselves from being held accountable

4. That is the new frontier for law enforcement.

5. In the past, you would have detectives in a patrol car,

6. uh, looking out the windows, hunting for bad guys.

7. But now you have threats that come through social media.

8. In 2019, I was the commander

9. of the Southern Nevada Counterterrorism Center.

10. I was informed that an individual

11. who lived with his mother in Southern California

12. had, uh, put information out on social media

13. that he was trying to organize, uh, an event where they would storm Area 51.

14. I was pissed off.

15. But I did not wanna be the person that ignored something

16. that you could see coming a mile away.

17. And then the questions were gonna be asked afterwards

18. of why didn't law enforcement do something about this?

19. We gotta get this thing under control.

21. More than two million people say

22. they're going to storm Area 51 next month.

23. The Lincoln County Sheriff has some big concerns.

24. We're reaching out to all of our partners, federal and state.

25. We don't know. We're only planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

27. They were getting together every government agency they could

28. to deal with this Storm Area 51 thing.

29. So I jumped in my patrol car and headed to Las Vegas.

33. the FBI, the State Department, US Marshals.

34. It really brought things home. This is big league here.

35. We had US Air Force personnel.

36. Captain Tomaino was running the whole event.

37. He came in, and we went around the room voicing our concerns.

38. If a large amount of people decided we're going to storm the base,

39. how are we gonna handle this?

40. Imagine someone has a gun.

41. If people start shooting and suddenly, hundreds or maybe thousands of people

42. get shot over this event, you're looking at one of the deadliest mass shootings

43. in the history of our nation.

44. This isn't a joke. This isn't play. This is definitely serious.

45. It's all fucked up.

46. We asked the Air Force,

47. "Are you really gonna use your weapons on a crowd of nerds?"

48. There are foreign intel operatives out there

49. that are gonna infiltrate the crowd of these Naruto runner alien seekers.

52. Therefore, we will treat all of them as hostile until proven otherwise.

54. was to have the organizers of the event

55. well aware that there would be consequences

56. for their actions if they continue to carry on.

57. We needed to be able to put somebody on the doorsteps

58. since this guy's hundreds of miles away.

59. And so we all turned and looked at the FBI.

60. I'm at my friend's house when I get a call from my mom at about 10:00 a.m.

61. I don't answer it, and then she texts me.

62. And now I'm scared to the point I'm about to cry.

63. I was scared. I've never had federal agents at my door.

64. They said, "Do you know where he's at?"

65. They took my phone to talk to him directly.

66. The agent is just wanting to know where I'm at and when I'll be home,

67. and I am telling him neither of these things.

68. I said, "You have to come home. If you don't,

69. that's when they're gonna start looking into what you've done."

70. I'm sheer panic.

71. I've got very militant anti-government people, um,

72. sending me scary messages, threatening to kill other people,

73. threatening to kill the guards at the base.

74. And what happens to me if one of these people goes in there

75. and tries to do that shit under my name?

76. I'm running through any lawyers I may have met in passing.

77. I'm looking up online of anybody that might have the qualifications

78. to help with this weird fucking scenario I found myself in.

79. And after I am on the edge of giving up,

80. I called Jeremy Corbell.

82. He was pretty terrified. I advised Matty he should have a lawyer with him,

83. just 'cause we didn't know.

84. We didn't know what the nature of this contact was.

85. I have seen the pushback.

86. When you're dealing and reporting on Area 51,

87. they wanna keep things secret.

88. These are accusations of a cover-up.

89. This is accusations that we have been holding non-terrestrial materials.

110. I'm telling them the truth. I'm not actually planning on doing this.

111. We're actually planning a music festival. Look, see? You can go through my messages.

112. Just anything to save my own ass at that point.

113. But they essentially let me know that it was my ass

114. if anybody decided to go in there and storm this base.

115. After this meeting, I needed to figure out a way to move away from Storm Area 51

116. and rebrand this so I can keep myself out of prison.

117. We started spitballing a bunch of ideas.

118. We collectively got together and kind of threw out names.

119. We start looking at Woodstock.

120. What's more peaceful than Woodstock?

121. There's supposed to be a million and a half people here by tonight.

122. It looks like some kind of biblical, unbelievable scene.

123. And so we take the theme of aliens and just mash 'em together.

126. It was kind of a beautiful, just come-together moment for all of us.

136. We were still monitoring the situation very closely.

138. Some people were trying to put lipstick on a pig.

139. Every time Matty tried to calm things down, it just got more crazy.

146. Alienstock was hot. So all these brands, like, jumped in on it.

151. It started as a Facebook post to storm Area 51,

152. and then went to a music festival.

154. anybody who wants to get a toe in on this thing is reaching out.

162. So now you've got this festival with potentially millions of attendees,

163. and who's gonna be putting this on?

165. It's like we are looking at seven Woodstocks.

166. Fourteen Coachellas, 50 Burning Mans.

167. And this whole time, I'm sitting here

168. with less than $1,000 in my bank account.

170. So now we're five weeks out.

171. We have a venue, an audience

172. and a ton of hype, but we have no money.

173. That was a big problem, 'cause somebody was gonna have to put up the money,

174. and I wasn't gonna do it.

175. What Donnie started doing was searching out sponsorships.

176. I talked to Arby's.

177. They said they'd send free food.

178. Bud Light. Because they were making their own alien can.

179. And then along comes PornHub.

180. PornHub was all-in.

181. They gave us $70,000 to sponsor the event.

182. PornHub offering to sponsor this.

183. It couldn't have been more perfect.

184. I was stoked.

185. I told Matty $70,000 was enough to pay for a stage

186. and a couple of staff.

187. But when you're doing a show in the middle of nowhere,

188. you have to bring everything yourself.

189. Porta potties, fencing, uh, staff, the water, the staging.

190. It doesn't pop up overnight.

191. We were building a city from nothing.

192. It was hard thing to do to put on a music festival

193. in the middle of nowhere.

194. I was starting to get the info on things,

195. and I got the sense that people were panicking a little bit

196. and starting to have doubts.

197. How do you create a music festival in the desert?

198. Where are they gonna eat and sleep?

199. There's no cell service, no internet.

200. No stores, no gas.

202. might turn out to be more like the disastrous Fyre Festival.

206. who paid all this money to go to this Caribbean island. A total shit show.

207. With Alienstock, there's an element of schadenfreude,

208. where it would be almost, like, satisfying for the whole thing to blow up.

213. The more I learn, the worse it gets.

218. So one of my main objectives is to not end up in prison.

220. I didn't know what Fyre Fest was,

221. but this had "humanitarian disaster" written all over it.

222. We were beginning to get worried

223. that we would have the desert overrun with casualties.

224. We're gonna have folks that are literally starving or dehydrating

225. out in the desert during the scorching heat.

226. Naysayers. It was coming in one ear, coming out the other.

227. I did not care what they were saying.

228. If this just turns out to be a disaster, we'll have a front-row seat.

229. Our fans were gonna love it. It was gonna be perfect.

230. I was excited by the idea of a bit of carnage.

231. If millions of people are gonna starve and die, at least I wanna witness it.

232. And if we get killed, at least have it be on livestream.

233. All these voices are starting now to ring true,

234. and I'm stuck here wondering if I'm sending four million people

235. out to the middle of nowhere to die.

236. The residents of Rachel said, "We don't want this in our town."

237. I tried to warn people on my Area 51 website.

238. It's just a very hostile environment.

239. There's desert critters. There's scorpions, uh, snakes.

240. This could potentially be a really bad situation.

241. So we approached the commissioners

242. in hopes that they would not allow this event to go forward.

243. There's the county commissioner.

244. When people are up in arms, they're pissed off,

245. they're not afraid to come and talk to you.

246. In the store, in the post office,

248. When I first heard about this, I thought it was a joke, you know?

250. they're gonna be allowed to storm through the Area 51 gate?

251. What do they think they're gonna see or do?

252. So we decided to call a meeting.

253. I figured that it was a no-brainer.

254. The county commissioners would just stamp it "no."

255. There is no way on God's green earth that this is gonna get permitted.

256. Storming Area 51, it is illegal.

257. You deny the permit. You don't let it happen.

258. It becomes an illegal event. It goes away, and the problem is solved.

259. But we had no control over the county commissioner's decision.

260. Thousands of people will pack into rural towns near Rachel, Nevada.

261. The tiny community is preparing for an invasion,

262. for a new event, Alienstock.

263. I headed to the courthouse.

264. All of my disgruntled neighbors

265. were going to be there.

266. Joerg was doing everything in his power to stop Alienstock.

267. I learned that they were planning

268. on putting a helicopter landing right next to my house.

269. We're worried about people invading private properties.

270. Was it gonna get overrun, burned down by an angry mob?

271. My dilemma was either piss off the people in Rachel

272. or piss off a million people or whoever, how many were showing up,

273. 'cause they don't have a venue.

274. As a commissioner, my focus was on the protection and security

275. of the people that pay taxes in my county.

276. I was really hoping that this would put an end to this madness.

277. So it has all come down to this moment. All our eyes are on the commissioners.

278. They are the only people that can stop this event from happening.

279. There was some heavy discussion between the commissioners.

280. It was kicked back and forth.

281. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

282. Now these people intend on coming.

283. They said, you know, "All in favor, raise your hand."

284. Now that these permits are approved, the festivals are happening.

285. The county approved permits for the owner of Little A'Le'Inn.

286. Alienstock, put on by Connie West, permit approved.

287. I was gonna make sure this went off without a hitch.

288. I felt let down.

289. There was nothing that we could do anymore that would stop it.

290. I called my girlfriend.

291. And I said, "I just got my butt kicked. You wouldn't believe it."

292. Local yokels thought they were doing the right thing for their area

293. and didn't really think in terms of the big picture.

294. I was sitting there in disbelief.

295. The US government is spending millions of dollars,

296. but the people having to deal with this decision are the Lincoln County folks.

297. They don't deal with crazy every day.

298. They're normally dealing with the theft of a cow.

299. It's ludicrous. If this many people are gonna show up anyway,

300. let's at least give 'em a venue

301. or give 'em some place to go and congregate.

302. That's what's best for the county.

303. A lot of people were upset that those, uh, permits were approved.

304. But that approval meant the promoters are on the hook financially.

305. There was a lot we had to do in order

306. to be able to handle this amount of people that were coming.

307. We had to go and start clearing land

308. and finding the space

309. and organizing where the stage was going to be.

310. Do you have an idea of where we're gonna put the vendors?

311. Not quite sure exactly where we're gonna tweak the stage at.

312. Matty had a designated list of things to do.

313. I had mine.

314. I already had the land, I already had the liquor license,

315. and I already had the permit.

316. Matty and Donnie were supposed to be managing everything else.

317. But I wasn't seeing anything was being done.

318. At the courthouse, I was approached by a security company,

319. and I'm hit with over $100,000 worth of bills

320. that I'm not supposed to be having to pay.

321. I didn't know what to do.

322. I'm not getting help, and Matty's telling me that it's Donnie.

323. You know, I called Donnie.

324. And that's when things started going haywire.

325. You know, somebody drops $100,000 bill on you, where is it gonna come from?

326. There's supposed to be all this sponsorship money coming in,

327. and I haven't seen it,

328. but it was coming. It was on its way.

329. And you know, I came out of the meeting, um, thinking, "Oh, my God."

330. "Where am I gonna come up with this money?"

331. I called my son and told him I guess I'm gonna sell my house.

332. And then the guy who handed me the bill

333. said to me there were these festival guys in Las Vegas,

334. and they were willing to help because they had money.

335. I told Donnie that we should hear them out and see what they have to offer.

336. Connie had messaged us about this guy, Frank DiMaggio.

337. So I looked him up.

338. He's posing with all these celebrities,

339. but I've never heard of anything he'd ever done.

340. So to me, that's a big red flag.

341. I was like, these guys are no good.

342. My reputation in this town depends on who you talk to.

343. I don't let people fuck with me,

344. and I don't back down to anybody for any reason.

345. My partner John said this woman that owns the Little A'Le'Inn

346. where they're doing the event is in over her head.

347. He said, "Can you help her?"

348. I said, "Maybe."

349. We had an investor that was willing to put up a large sum of money.

350. But we have to find out what they have in place

351. before we can make any decisions

352. on whether or not we're gonna be even involved.

353. So we asked Connie and Matty to sit down for a meeting.

354. The event is happening in a couple of weeks,

355. but I don't really have any clue what's going on,

356. and there's all these fucking people I don't know getting involved.

357. It's confusing.

358. We're down to the wire. I've got people hounding me for money.

359. So we just decided collectively that we would hear them out.

360. And Donnie's like, "I won't be there."

361. Connie said, you know, that she was gonna work with Frank.

362. I said, "Thank God."

363. People were already starting to call this Fyre Fest 2.0.

364. The weight of the world was off my shoulders, right?

365. I didn't have to deal with it anymore.

366. I just thought, "Two weeks out, Frank running the show."

367. "Good luck. I'm out."

368. The meeting with Frank and company was scheduled for the 6th September.

369. I was the first one to show up.

370. Matty was on his way.

371. We talk. We were smiling, laughing.

372. Matty showed up.

373. We assumed that they had

374. this massive, organized event ready to go.

375. They just didn't know how to pull it off.

376. And we needed to find out what they had in place.

377. I said, "What are you planning?"

378. "And how's it gonna work? How much are you gonna charge?"

379. We don't know anything.

380. Frank says, "You know, you want, um, stages from us."

381. "You want lighting from us."

382. "You want this from us, that from us. We need to see your bank accounts."

383. "Open up your bank account." The fuck I will.

384. And they're like, "Um, excuse me."

385. "You need our help."

386. Connie's not answering any questions.

387. Everybody's yelling, screaming at each other.

388. And then all of a sudden, Frank starts slamming his hands onto the table.

389. Bam! Bam!

390. "Get the fuck out. I'm done."

391. And I stood up.

392. It just completely explodes out of nowhere.

393. It's like everybody's gone absolutely fucking bananas,

394. like chimpanzees at the zoo.

395. What the fuck is going on?

396. What the fuck just happened?

397. Fuck you. Our relationship with Connie ended when we told her to leave the house.

398. I asked Matty, "What would your parents tell you to do right now?"

399. "'Cause I can tell you what my parents would tell me to do, tell me to run."

400. "This could ruin your life."

401. "If something happens out there,

402. and you're not prepared for it, somebody gets killed, you're gonna get sued."

403. "Even if it's not your fault, you're gonna get sued."

404. I told him it's not worth going to jail or throwing your life away.

405. "I don't want you to get shot either, Mathew."

406. Connie's gone home in tears.

407. And I'm watching this cool thing

408. that we've built up until now just disintegrate.

409. I said to Matty, "We can help you."

410. "But not with Connie and not out in Rachel."

411. We had a venue ready to go here in Las Vegas.

412. My heart says, "Let's go to Rachel."

413. It fits the spirit of the event. It's right by Area 51.

414. But then my brain is telling me

415. that it's the worst fucking idea we can possibly have

416. because there's infrastructure in Las Vegas.

417. There is security in Las Vegas.

418. Everything's set. It's safe.

525. The day before I was supposed to storm Area 51, I broke my neck.

526. Doctors recommend that I just lay down and recover for the next couple weeks.

528. and we're gonna find some aliens!

549. and to keep this event from being a total disaster.

563. So we knew that we were gonna go right into the hornet's nest,

564. whatever this supposed humanitarian crisis was gonna be.

565. As we're heading out to the desert, we didn't really know who

566. was there to party and who was there to storm,

567. but we expected, like, everything to go wrong.

568. We wanted to go out there. We wanted to see some shit.

569. 20th September 2019, I posted, "Today is the day."

570. Headed to the infamous Area 51 takeover!

573. The only thing that we had on our maps was "Area 51."

574. So, like, we literally drove towards Area 51.

575. It's so far, man. I mean, I wasn't even out of Las Vegas.

576. I started losing signal,

577. but I just went on faith, man. Pure faith. I knew I was gonna get there.

578. As we were getting closer, we're seeing more and more people

579. and seeing more and more law enforcement.

580. Oh, they're coming for you.

581. Oh, they are coming for you fast.

582. Like, I remember seeing SWAT on the side of the road. Police cars lined up.

583. It felt like, "Aww, fuck, we're about to enter something crazy."

584. We repeat, anybody breaching Area 51 will be shot.

585. We start to see vehicles with large antennas on their roofs,

586. vehicles with, um, blacked-out windows.

587. What's it gonna look like when we get to that base?

588. Everybody was holding their breath.

589. We're all ready to go. Uh, people are coming in.

590. Okay, now what?

591. We've gotten some information about a suspicious vehicle headed to Area 51.

592. To me, it had a potential to be bad, and we wanted to avoid it.

593. So I jumped in my patrol vehicle.

594. I was able to locate the pickup truck.

595. And he identified himself.

596. I looked inside the vehicle.

597. I thought, "Oh, man, we have a problem here."

598. He was saying he was gonna go to Rachel, to Area 51.

599. I was able to talk him into allowing me

600. to keep those weapons until the event was over.

601. Made us think, "Okay, well, if this guy could have firearms,

602. how many others could have firearms as well?"

603. Are we live? Let's fucking start this!

604. Wow, 3:00 a.m. Things get crazy.

609. Started approaching 3:00 a.m. on September 20th.

610. Started getting hyper-concerned about what was going on.

613. this was the point that they're gonna go storm the gate.

614. So all of our forces are ready.

615. We've been monitoring the situation, starting to see some increased activity.

616. We're fully prepared, ready for anything that might happen.

625. The manpower was at its peak. Everybody was ready to go.

634. They were reporting like there was a fucking crowd. Four!

636. - They can't catch all of us. - And they began to run.

639. They got their moment of fame. They got their picture, and it was done.

641. Three point five million people turned out to just be a few hundred.

654. There were no Chads there.

655. There were no Kyles. There were no Karens.

657. No one was even wearing the Naruto band. It was a letdown.

661. We had spent months preparing for this event.

662. And that was it. That was the biggest activity we saw.

663. Those poor aliens were stuck in there, thinking they were gonna get busted out.

664. They're still stranded there.

665. We'd heard there was gonna be a big raid at 3:00 a.m.

666. But we woke up, and, uh, there was nothing there.

667. I felt trolled. Fuck me, right?

668. Fuck us!

669. We did everything in our power to, like, hype it,

670. and ultimately, the joke was on us.

671. I wasn't watching what was going on in Rachel.

672. I was just having a fucking blast.

673. Once the stage comes alive with music,

674. and those people are dancing,

675. all that stress that you've gone through before just completely disappears.

676. I grab the microphone, and I step out on stage.

678. The crowd went insane.

693. everybody just started dancing and vibing.

696. People were just having a great time.

698. We are so grateful for this space here in Rachel, Nevada,

699. of understanding that aliens are real.

700. Everyone was having fun, and I felt like the aliens were dancing with us.

702. Every time I turned around, there was nothing but cameras everywhere.

704. I did my best to make sure that everybody was going to be taken care of.

714. and were watching us like we were zoo animals.

717. We were cautiously keeping an eye on things going on from the distance.

719. There was a lot of these social media wannabes interviewing each other.

720. We are there to document the scene of a humanitarian crisis.

721. Then I realized at the end of day,

722. it was a few people partying in the desert...

723. talking about aliens.

724. I mean, shit, that's exactly

725. what it was supposed to be the entire time, you know?

726. It was cool.

727. When I saw the videos from the Rachel event,

728. like, it honestly looked kind of cool.

729. Like what I had pictured our event being to begin with.

730. Sort of the opposite of Fyre Fest,

731. where they built everything, but then there's not enough people.

732. There were more porta potties than there were people.

733. And I started to think about my own role in this

734. as a blood-hungry media producer, who was like, "We want the conflict. Ahh!"

735. And I think we got ahead of ourselves

736. by wanting this Fyre Fest 2.0 story to come to fruition.

737. We're driving back past all the media trucks.

738. There's this mobile police headquarters they've erected in the desert.

739. All the different, like, emergency vehicles.

740. I just think to myself, I'm like, "How much did this all cost?"

741. We did exactly what we needed to do.

742. If it would've gone bad, they never would have let me forget it.

743. And I would've had to live with that till the day I retired and beyond.

744. You wanna know how much money I won in the lawsuit?

745. She can chase me to the ends of the earth. They can put me in jail.

746. She'll still never get the money.

747. Mobilizing a lot of resources, that costs money.

748. $11 million?

749. That's how much the military lost?

750. For what? Added security?

751. What the fuck? That's insane!

752. You can easily say, well, we shouldn't have done it.

753. We shouldn't— should not have wasted those resources.

755. that there were too wide a range of possibilities,

756. with the worst-case scenario being a mass casualty event.

757. And I will defend to the final day

758. that we did not overspend in our preparation for it.

759. Every day, people are doing crazy stuff because of the internet.
