1. Tonight..
Copy !req
2. James draws on a board,
Copy !req
3. Richard waves at a man,
Copy !req
4. And I run away from a table.
Copy !req
5. Hello, everybody!
Hello and welcome!
Copy !req
6. Thank you so much.
Thank you. Now...
Copy !req
7. Now, I'm often asked, but sometimes I...
but actually I was once asked by one person
Copy !req
8. why we review fast Vauxhalls so rarely on Top Gear.
Copy !req
9. The simple answer - they're terrible rubbish.
Copy !req
10. Vauxhall, however, has just introduced a new fast Astra
Copy !req
11. and says it isn't terrible rubbish.
Copy !req
12. Hmmm.
Copy !req
13. It's called the VXR and on paper,
Copy !req
14. it certainly appears to be terrible rubbish.
Copy !req
15. Because what they've done, bless them, is fit under the bonnet
Copy !req
16. of a front-wheel drive Vauxhall Astra,
Copy !req
17. a 276 horsepower engine.
Copy !req
18. That's as daft as fitting the heart- of an elephant in a mouse.
Copy !req
19. The thing is, the front wheels have to do the steering
Copy !req
20. and that's a big, important job.
Copy !req
21. And asking them to handle 276 horsepower as well,
Copy !req
22. means you've to do some very, very clever engineering.
Copy !req
23. Not that long ago,
Copy !req
24. Vauxhall was making the not-at-all cleverly engineered Vectra.
Copy !req
25. The most dreary, uninspiring car in all of human history.
Copy !req
26. Oh!
Copy !req
27. It really was a cure for ADD.
Copy !req
28. If you put a hyperactive child in there, he'd be asleep
Copy !req
29. in three minutes flat. I mean, look at it!
Copy !req
30. It's as gripping as a Victorian novel,
Copy !req
31. as stylish as a taxman's trousers.
Copy !req
32. You almost got the impression they designed it in a coffee break.
Copy !req
33. Oh, quick, the boss wants a new car. There's one.
Copy !req
34. Give it some fancy door mirrors.
Copy !req
35. It'll look like we made an effort. They hadn't!
Copy !req
36. So the idea that a company which did this,
Copy !req
37. now thinks it has the technical ability to put 276 horsepowers
Copy !req
38. through the front wheels of a hatchback is laughable.
Copy !req
39. The thing is though, amazingly,
Copy !req
40. they've pulled it off!
Copy !req
41. It has a clever front diff and unlike a normal Astra,
Copy !req
42. it has hydraulic power steering.
Copy !req
43. It also has the same sort of dampers that Ferrari use
Copy !req
44. and James tells me it has separate hub carriers.
Copy !req
45. Which is interesting(!)
Copy !req
46. Plainly then, they've spent more time and effort on the front end
Copy !req
47. of this car, than they did on the whole of the Vectra.
Copy !req
48. And the rewards are huge.
Copy !req
49. There's no torque steer, there is no fuss, there is no drama,
Copy !req
50. the power is just there when you want it.
Copy !req
51. It might not be the most fun car in the world,
Copy !req
52. it actually feels quite heavy,
Copy !req
53. but, my God, it is quick!
Copy !req
54. And best of all, despite extremely wide low-profile tyres,
Copy !req
55. it has a comfortable ride as well.
Copy !req
56. If you like being uncomfortable,
Copy !req
57. you can push this sport button here- which firms everything up
Copy !req
58. and if you want to feel like you're- falling down a rocky escarpment,
Copy !req
59. you can push this one.
Copy !req
60. If you do that, watch, ready...
Copy !req
61. look, all the dials glow red
Copy !req
62. to warn you that your neck is about to snap.
Copy !req
63. Probably better to leave those buttons alone, clearly.
Copy !req
64. This is a damn good car. It's solid, good looking and very, very fast.
Copy !req
65. Plus, because it's a hatchback, it's practical as well.
Copy !req
66. There are, as I see it, only two problems.
Copy !req
67. One - at just shy of 27,000, it is quite expensive.
Copy !req
68. And two - when you are asked at parties what you're driving
Copy !req
69. these days, you're going to have to start by saying... erm...
Copy !req
70. Perhaps then, we should look
Copy !req
71. at the Astra's chief rival - the Ford Focus ST.
Copy !req
72. This has five doors, so it is more practical than the Vauxhall.
Copy !req
73. It's 5,000 cheaper and at parties,
Copy !req
74. you can say you own a Ford without blushing.
Copy !req
75. But it simply isn't as nice to drive.
Copy !req
76. Instead of taming the front end with proper mechanical
Copy !req
77. engineering like Vauxhall did, Ford has used electronic systems
Copy !req
78. and the truth is, they're not as good.
Copy !req
79. You can sense the electrons doing their absolute best to
Copy !req
80. keep things neat and tidy, but you can also sense them, erm...
Copy !req
81. .. failing!
Copy !req
82. There's torque steer, there's understeer,
Copy !req
83. and then there's lift off oversteer.
Copy !req
84. There. It is a smorgasbord of waywardness.
Copy !req
85. I also have to say the Ford has a particularly unpleasant interior.
Copy !req
86. And it does not look very good from the outside either.
Copy !req
87. Nowhere near as good as the Astra, that's for sure.
Copy !req
88. So, as an enthusiast's car, I have to say the Vauxhall is better.
Copy !req
89. But this is Top Gear and I can't very well sit here
Copy !req
90. and say, "Hey, petrol heads, the best hot hatchback is a Vauxhall Astra."
Copy !req
91. That would be like a travel person saying, "Hey, holidaymakers,
Copy !req
92. "the best place for your summer vacation is Belgium!"
Copy !req
93. So, let's keep going and look at another option.
Copy !req
94. The Renault Megane 265.
Copy !req
95. This is the darling of all the car magazines.
Copy !req
96. They love it and it's easy to see why.
Copy !req
97. You can just tell this car was designed by a team of people
Copy !req
98. who really know what enthusiasts want when they're on the track.
Copy !req
99. It's sublime.
Copy !req
100. They've even fitted it with a special readout that shows how fast
Copy !req
101. you went from 0 to 60,
Copy !req
102. how fast you did the standing quarter, your lap times,
Copy !req
103. how much power you're using, how much brake you're using,
Copy !req
104. your throttle position, a graph, an extreme graph,
Copy !req
105. your G metre.
Copy !req
106. The Stig just loves this.
Copy !req
107. He's been running around all morning squawking
Copy !req
108. and clutching at his tinkle!
Copy !req
109. And I have too, if I'm honest!
Copy !req
110. It's just an amazing combination of nimbleness and brute force.
Copy !req
111. There's no doubt that it's more exciting than the Vauxhall
Copy !req
112. and less wayward than the Ford and faster than both of them.
Copy !req
113. To show you how much faster, I engaged sport mode
Copy !req
114. and pulled up for a drag race.
Copy !req
115. Watch and learn, Vauxhall!
Copy !req
116. What?
Copy !req
117. Come on!
Copy !req
118. Come on! Faster!
Copy !req
119. Come on-n-n-n!
Copy !req
120. That was not supposed to happen.
Copy !req
121. Much to my surprise then, the Renault was the slowest.
Copy !req
122. And when you bear equipment levels in mind,
Copy !req
123. it is the most expensive, too.
Copy !req
124. And it's also the least nice.
Copy !req
125. Sitting in here is a bit like sitting in Eeyore's gloomy place,
Copy !req
126. it is all very dark and everything you touch and everything you use
Copy !req
127. feels flimsy, like it will come off- or break at any moment.
Copy !req
128. And the back's very cramped and the ride's very hard,
Copy !req
129. this seat is very low down and very snug
Copy !req
130. and gives you an idea of what it would be like to be buried alive.
Copy !req
131. And look at this. You can't wear a pink shirt or it'll clash.
Copy !req
132. So, while this may be the nicest car to drive on a track or
Copy !req
133. a deserted moorland road,
Copy !req
134. it would not be the nicest to live with on a day-to-day basis.
Copy !req
135. That means we arrive at a rather worrying conclusion because,
Copy !req
136. if I were to choose one of these three cars to drive home in tonight,
Copy !req
137. it would be...
Copy !req
138. the...
Copy !req
139. What happened there? The camera broke. Did it?
Copy !req
140. Yeah, no, it literally just broke there. Did it?
Copy !req
141. And what were you about to say? Erm, I can't remember.
Copy !req
142. You were about to say the Vauxhall. A bit.
Copy !req
143. It's a surprisingly likeable car. It just is.
Copy !req
144. Isn't that a bit like saying Piers Morgan is a surprisingly
Copy !req
145. likeable man, but in the end, he is still fundamentally
Copy !req
146. Piers Morgan, isn't he? Awful man. Yes, I know what you mean.
Copy !req
147. Look, hold on a minute.
Copy !req
148. The Ford is 5,000 cheaper, it is the most practical, with
Copy !req
149. the most doors and we've just seen it is the fastest. I'd have that.
Copy !req
150. There's a lot to commend the Ford. You're right. I like the Renault.
Copy !req
151. Oh God! This is brilliant buyers' advice, isn't it?
Copy !req
152. I'd have the Ford, you'd have the Renault,
Copy !req
153. and he'd have the Piers Morgan. Know how we can sort this out.
Copy !req
154. The tame racing driver.
Copy !req
155. Some say he contains 47% horse.
Copy !req
156. And that to concentrate more on his work here,
Copy !req
157. he's resigned, this week, from his other job in Rome.
Copy !req
158. All we know is, he's called The Stig!
Copy !req
159. 'And they're off. Sluggish start from the Ford.
Copy !req
160. 'But it soon bites
Copy !req
161. 'and finds its stride on the way to- the first corner.
Copy !req
162. 'And it's the Renault looking twitchy into there,
Copy !req
163. 'the other two nicely controlled and gripping hard.'
Copy !req
164. 'The Stig still listening to national anthems
Copy !req
165. 'and a cacophony of patriotic noise.
Copy !req
166. 'All tracking cleanly around Chicago
Copy !req
167. 'now spooling up the turbos for the run to Hammerhead,
Copy !req
168. 'hard on the brakes, might see something mealier from the Focus.
Copy !req
169. 'But no. Almost threatening to cock a back wheel.
Copy !req
170. 'And the Renault just scampers away- like a cheese-crazed sport monkey.'
Copy !req
171. 'Wow! A stack of Stigs there. Follow-through.
Copy !req
172. 'The Focus is getting out of shape,
Copy !req
173. 'quickly pulls it back together again.
Copy !req
174. 'Quick through the tyres, two corners left, the Vauxhall appears
Copy !req
175. 'to be composed, the Renault looking bumpy on the way in.
Copy !req
176. 'It's the most track-ready car here. Here they come, up to Gambon.
Copy !req
177. 'No dramas at all and across the line.'
Copy !req
178. I have the times here and they are not that fast.
Copy !req
179. The Ford Focus did it in 1.29.6.
Copy !req
180. The Vauxhall Astra did a 1.28.3
Copy !req
181. and the Renault Megane,
Copy !req
182. the most track-focused of them all,- did a 1.27.7.
Copy !req
183. So therefore, the conclusion is,
Copy !req
184. if you want a relatively inexpensive, fun car,
Copy !req
185. buy the Toyota GT 86!
Copy !req
186. We're really not much good at that consumer advice thing, are we?
Copy !req
187. Anyway, we must now do the news. Yes, and it's bad news!
Copy !req
188. Dacia have got their name wrong.
Copy !req
189. Have you seen the car ads they've been doing?
Copy !req
190. They keep referring to themselves as Datcha.
Copy !req
191. I think that's because
Copy !req
192. that's how you say it in Romania, where it's built.
Copy !req
193. There's another labelling problem they've got,
Copy !req
194. because I was reading up on the new Sandero.
Copy !req
195. It says it's got 90 horsepower. With everything that's been going on,
Copy !req
196. how do we know that isn't cow power?
Copy !req
197. Yeah. Good point.
Copy !req
198. Because those abattoirs are in Romania,
Copy !req
199. allegedly. Apparently.
Copy !req
200. We went to Romania once and we did see a lot of people
Copy !req
201. riding around on cows, rounding up horses.
Copy !req
202. And all their farmers complaining about getting up early
Copy !req
203. to milk the horses! Exactly.
Copy !req
204. So, it is a 90 cow power car, we've established now. Good.
Copy !req
205. On the show, we've always said you can't be a proper petrolhead
Copy !req
206. until you've owned an Alfa, which has always been
Copy !req
207. an embarrassing problem for me, because I haven't.
Copy !req
208. But that might be about to change with this, the Alfa Romeo 4C.
Copy !req
209. A little two seater, 1.8 litre turbocharged engine
Copy !req
210. mounted in the middle, chassis made of carbon fibre.
Copy !req
211. At least it won't rust. They'll find a way.
Copy !req
212. They'll have bought cheap Russian carbon fibre that somehow oxidises.
Copy !req
213. You know what Alfa's like! How much is it?
Copy !req
214. It's going to cost between 40 and 50,000.
Copy !req
215. I have a bit of a problem with that.
Copy !req
216. I don't think the looks are quite right. Eh? It's gorgeous.
Copy !req
217. I think it's a bit too tall. Exactly. It is.
Copy !req
218. I'll tell you how it does look good- though, is if you see the plan view.
Copy !req
219. We've got one of those. Now that, I think, is good.
Copy !req
220. That's a view Hammond will never have! Oh, come on. Please!
Copy !req
221. Haa-haa! Open door. Yeah, all right.
Copy !req
222. Now the Ford Mustang we featured last week in the race across Europe,
Copy !req
223. that seems to have captured the hearts and minds of everybody, I mean, really.
Copy !req
224. Everywhere I've been, all week, people have been talking to me
Copy !req
225. about that car. Yeah, non-stop. Well, big news.
Copy !req
226. Ford has announced, because they've- never sold the Mustang
Copy !req
227. officially in Britain, since 1964, they've announced that the
Copy !req
228. next generation of Mustang coming next year, will be
Copy !req
229. built with right-hand drive and will be sold in Britain.
Copy !req
230. About time, brilliant, good news.
Copy !req
231. There is, however, a tiny bit of bad news. What?
Copy !req
232. Well, the V8 version will be sold in America, but,
Copy !req
233. because we're only British,
Copy !req
234. all we can have is a two litre eco-boost engine.
Copy !req
235. Oh, for God's sake! Do they think we want that?
Copy !req
236. I can't understand their logic.
Copy !req
237. If you want a Mustang, it is because you want a big V8 muscle car,
Copy !req
238. there is no other reason for buying one. Precisely.
Copy !req
239. So if you want a two litre eco-boost car,
Copy !req
240. you are going to buy a Golf diesel.- Not a Mustang.
Copy !req
241. It's like saying I formed a punk band,
Copy !req
242. we got cellos, except for Sebastian, he has a harp.
Copy !req
243. Nobody wants a harp in a punk band,
Copy !req
244. nobody wants a two litre eco-boost engine in a bloody Mustang.
Copy !req
245. You can keep it, we don't want it. Just keep it. Keep them.
Copy !req
246. Now, the most important news of the week.
Copy !req
247. As you may have noticed, modern cars now have been given
Copy !req
248. electronic handbrakes, rather than a lever. This is a problem,
Copy !req
249. because you can't do a handbrake turn with an electronic button.
Copy !req
250. And this is bad news,
Copy !req
251. because handbrake turns are an essential part of male development,
Copy !req
252. because as we all know,
Copy !req
253. the handbrake lever is connected directly to a girl's sexual appetite!
Copy !req
254. It is. It is. When you're 17, it is. You're smiling and you know it is.
Copy !req
255. You see it in the animal kingdom. A peacock has his feathers.
Copy !req
256. The young man has his handbrake. Exactly. They do the same job.
Copy !req
257. And if you have a button, it doesn't work. No.
Copy !req
258. I can remember my first attempt at seduction with the handbrake
Copy !req
259. when I was 17 years old.
Copy !req
260. I was going to pick up this girl called Liz from outside a pub
Copy !req
261. and I had it all planned.
Copy !req
262. I'd go in and I'd get on the handbrake and slew it round
Copy !req
263. like the Italian Job and the rest was a formality, obviously.
Copy !req
264. I went through the gate, quite hot,- pulled on the lever and that was
Copy !req
265. when the cable snapped.
Copy !req
266. I think it was because I had spent the previous day practising,
Copy !req
267. you see... Only you would practise a handbrake turn! You have to.
Copy !req
268. Wish I had. What? I remember taking- a girl called Cathy home one night.
Copy !req
269. I was 17, in my mum's Audi.
Copy !req
270. And she lived in the middle of a field and I do mean
Copy !req
271. in the middle of a field, no tracks, anything.
Copy !req
272. Was she called Ermintrude?
Copy !req
273. Did she wear a nice big bell? No, she wasn't a cow! Moo. Or a horse.
Copy !req
274. No, no.
Copy !req
275. Anyway, I am going down the grassy hill, to the house and thought,
Copy !req
276. I know what will tip her over the edge. Brrt!
Copy !req
277. Pirouetted straight through her dad's hedge. Was she impressed?
Copy !req
278. I know she was, because she pulled a face that was exactly like this.
Copy !req
279. That's the face, that's the face they pull
Copy !req
280. in that part of the mating ritual.
Copy !req
281. I know, because I have seen that face.
Copy !req
282. When I was a young man, 17, borrowing my dad's car,
Copy !req
283. diesel Astra estate,
Copy !req
284. and I was giving Katie from college a lift home, she lived on a farm,
Copy !req
285. down farm tracks and I had already warmed her up
Copy !req
286. with a bit of rally driving!
Copy !req
287. There was already a sexual tension in the car.
Copy !req
288. And I thought, "I'll seal the deal with the handbrake lever,"
Copy !req
289. yanked it on, slewed round, hit a rock. She pulled that exact face.
Copy !req
290. What, the...? Sometimes girls say, "What did you do that for?"
Copy !req
291. That's it. What they're actually saying is, "I'm ready!"
Copy !req
292. But I never got that face from Liz,- because as far she was concerned,
Copy !req
293. she didn't know I had tried to do a- handbrake turn, because
Copy !req
294. I had just got that twang, that was- the only twang I got
Copy !req
295. on that evening! As far as she could see,
Copy !req
296. I had just parked badly the wrong way round.
Copy !req
297. She just thought I was an cars. Think I know why they're doing this.
Copy !req
298. It's to cut down on unwanted teenage pregnancy.
Copy !req
299. And it could work. It's a clever thought.
Copy !req
300. It'll probably work, but it'll also- cut down on the future of mankind.
Copy !req
301. I think it is irresponsible. If you think about it,
Copy !req
302. if a man can't use a handbrake to pull a girl, what's he going to do?
Copy !req
303. There's going to be a lot of frustrated men around.
Copy !req
304. You may have to talk to her.No! No! Car makers, please, stop it.
Copy !req
305. You're meddling with forces unseen and more powerful than you.
Copy !req
306. Shall we get back to cars? Yeah, let's do it.
Copy !req
307. Peugeot, as we know, are the worst driven cars on the road,
Copy !req
308. always doing 40 in the outside lane, they're always in your way.
Copy !req
309. But now there is a new car from Peugeot. We have it here
Copy !req
310. in the studio. It's called the Onyx. It looks absolutely fantastic
Copy !req
311. and you'll notice that some of the bodywork is made from copper.
Copy !req
312. Just like the boiler tubes on a Gresley A4 Streamliner Pacific.
Copy !req
313. Yes, James, yes, yes.
Copy !req
314. And it's actually untreated copper,- so over time, it'll turn green
Copy !req
315. unless a scrap metal merchant removes it in the night.
Copy !req
316. Inside they've continued the theme of using unusual materials,
Copy !req
317. so the dashboard is made out of recycled newspaper.
Copy !req
318. I'm guessing they'll have used the Guardian for everything
Copy !req
319. on the left and the Telegraph for everything on the right!
Copy !req
320. Actually the newspaper is goodbecause it means there is no need to
Copy !req
321. Bluetooth your phone to it. The dashboard will already havelistened to your messages for you.
Copy !req
322. The engine is 680 horsepower V8 turbo diesel hybrid.
Copy !req
323. That means a top speed in the outside lane of 40.
Copy !req
324. Anyway, this is the future, perhaps, but now we must return to
Copy !req
325. the present, because we have some important information.
Copy !req
326. The Kia Cee'd, which we use as our reasonably priced car
Copy !req
327. has been updated and the new version is taking the world by storm.
Copy !req
328. This is it.
Copy !req
329. It has only been on sale for eight months
Copy !req
330. and already it has won the coveted Northern Car Of The Year award.
Copy !req
331. A chap called Derek Grocock
Copy !req
332. who is vice chairman of the Northern Group Of Motoring Writers
Copy !req
333. said it had impressed the judges with its comfort, value,
Copy !req
334. reliability, quality, and its seven-year warranty.
Copy !req
335. But this is Top Gear and we are interested in,
Copy !req
336. all of that obviously, but rather more besides.
Copy !req
337. So now let's see how well it does at all the things that matter to us.
Copy !req
338. Of course there is only one man we can turn to for an answer. Matt LeBlanc,
Copy !req
339. the fastest star we have ever had in our reasonably priced car.
Copy !req
340. Of course Matt lives in Los Angeles
Copy !req
341. but he appreciated the importance of the question.
Copy !req
342. First, the old car.
Copy !req
343. Old versus new. The age-old question.
Copy !req
344. And now, the new version.
Copy !req
345. Ah, that new-car smell. Huh?
Copy !req
346. So there we are.
Copy !req
347. Thanks a lot. Thank you. Any time.
Copy !req
348. With Matt gone I moved on to a test- I could handle myself.
Copy !req
349. I'm coming up now to a row of parked cars in a top-of-the-range Cee'd
Copy !req
350. which has this little button down here.
Copy !req
351. If I push it, sensors start to scan- the gaps to see if any of them
Copy !req
352. are big enough for me to park in. What about this gap here?
Copy !req
353. I don't think that's big enough. Does the car agree?
Copy !req
354. It will "bong" if it thinks it's big enough. It didn't like that.
Copy !req
355. What about this one?
Copy !req
356. There it is.
Copy !req
357. Now that's very impressive. But what it does next is even better.
Copy !req
358. If I put it in reverse I am told this will go into that gap
Copy !req
359. with no steering input at all from me.
Copy !req
360. To see if that is true I am going to wear a blindfold. OK.
Copy !req
361. I can now see nothing at all. Here we go.
Copy !req
362. Easing it backwards. Hands not on the wheel. Oh, my God, it's turning.
Copy !req
363. This is spooky.
Copy !req
364. I'm going to get some beeps to tell me when
Copy !req
365. I'm close to the car behind.
Copy !req
366. There we are.
Copy !req
367. Then I put it in drive.
Copy !req
368. This... LAUGHS
Copy !req
369. This is weird now.
Copy !req
370. If I take this off and I am parked I shall be amazed.
Copy !req
371. So now let's consider some rather more important questions.
Copy !req
372. Yes.
Copy !req
373. "Layla'by Eric Clapton
Copy !req
374. We plugged the lead into the auxiliary socket
Copy !req
375. and asked a local guitarist to try it out.
Copy !req
376. He seemed quite impressed.
Copy !req
377. So far then the little Kia is passing all our tests
Copy !req
378. and passing them well,
Copy !req
379. but I know what you're thinking.
Copy !req
380. This is a big problem because if you have your container of water
Copy !req
381. for the eel and even a small amount of sodium -
Copy !req
382. I've only got 100 grams here - and the two were to
Copy !req
383. come into contact with one another,- the results could be catastrophic.
Copy !req
384. As I shall now demonstrate.
Copy !req
385. Time and time again we hear about eel and sodium salesmen
Copy !req
386. going about their business when all of a sudden...
Copy !req
387. .. their car explodes.
Copy !req
388. To make sure that doesn't happen in the Cee'd, special segregated
Copy !req
389. trays are fitted underneath the boot floor
Copy !req
390. so you can have your sodium in one tray,
Copy !req
391. separated from the water into which- I am now going to place an eel.
Copy !req
392. There we go. Don't jiggle about. You'll get water on the sodium.
Copy !req
393. That's what happened to your mum. Stay. Good eel. Excellent.
Copy !req
394. Now we will just close the boot floor.
Copy !req
395. That really is an intelligent piece of design.
Copy !req
396. So now let's look at another vital issue that was not
Copy !req
397. addressed by Mr Grocock.
Copy !req
398. Yes, he can.
Copy !req
399. And he managed to do that without getting any more
Copy !req
400. blood or oil on his shirt.
Copy !req
401. Yes it is. A mid-range 1.6 litre Kia is 17,195. A mid-range 1.6 litre Focus, 17,200.
Copy !req
402. For the price of the Focus you can have a Kia
Copy !req
403. plus 5 to spend on...
Copy !req
404. ..5 worth of things.
Copy !req
405. There was a time when Kias were cheaper than their European
Copy !req
406. rivals because they were very nasty, but those days have gone.
Copy !req
407. This really is not nasty at all.
Copy !req
408. I think it is good looking on the outside,
Copy !req
409. good looking on the inside as well.
Copy !req
410. It has sophisticated independent rear suspension
Copy !req
411. so you can stick it into a corner pretty confident that you
Copy !req
412. will come out OK on the other side.
Copy !req
413. It is well-equipped.
Copy !req
414. And it has passed nearly all of our tests with flying colours.
Copy !req
415. The Kia Cee'd - good enough for Mr Grocock and good enough for Top Gear.
Copy !req
416. Very thorough. Very, very thorough. A lot of information there.
Copy !req
417. A lot of important information.
Copy !req
418. Yes, absolutely, but for me the most impressive thing- was that parking system. I know.
Copy !req
419. That is uncanny.
Copy !req
420. Although I should say in fairness you can also get that
Copy !req
421. system on Fords and Volkswagens and Toyotas these days.
Copy !req
422. Yes, anyway, between you and Mr Grocock, Eric Clapton...
Copy !req
423. Brue Willis...
Copy !req
424. .. and Matt LeBlanc, that is the Kia completely covered.
Copy !req
425. No, not quite,
Copy !req
426. because there is one more important- question we have to deal with.
Copy !req
427. Is there? Is it, "Can a badger drive it?"
Copy !req
428. That is a good idea, but no.
Copy !req
429. It is, "Can you play rugby in it?" Rugby?
Copy !req
430. Yes, rugby. If you are watching in America, rugby is
Copy !req
431. a bit like American football only it's played by men.
Copy !req
432. And you are going to try and play it in a car?
Copy !req
433. Yes, it is one of the most ambitious
Copy !req
434. things we have ever attempted and we will see how it does later on.
Copy !req
435. Now, though, it is time to put a star in our reasonably priced car.
Copy !req
436. My guest tonight is a young chap from Hertfordshire
Copy !req
437. who recently got a new Mercedes and wants to come and tell us
Copy !req
438. all about it. Normally we would tell him to get lost.
Copy !req
439. But we decided to make an exception on this occasion
Copy !req
440. because...
Copy !req
441. his name, ladies and gentlemen, is Lewis Hamilton.
Copy !req
442. Great! You are back. You are back. Good to see you.
Copy !req
443. Lewis is among us.
Copy !req
444. Have a seat. Have a seat. It feels good to be back. Luxury.
Copy !req
445. Obviously the first question is the big one.
Copy !req
446. You have moved from McLaren to Mercedes.
Copy !req
447. Is that not a bit like moving from Manchester United to West Ham?
Copy !req
448. Firstly, thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. Don't change the subject.
Copy !req
449. Good to be back.
Copy !req
450. Yes, no, it's a big change for me obviously,
Copy !req
451. but I'm really excited about it.
Copy !req
452. Everyone is criticising it and has their own opinions but for me
Copy !req
453. I have been at McLaren since I was 13.
Copy !req
454. It was a long period there and I wanted a change. I am a risk taker.
Copy !req
455. There is a risk and a risk because McLaren have won, what, 182 races.
Copy !req
456. Mercedes has won... one in five years. What makes you think...?
Copy !req
457. Well, they won the Championship. Well, it was actually Brawn... Brawn. Technically not...
Copy !req
458. Have they told you that? "We've won. We've won." You are right.
Copy !req
459. They have struggled the last few years, but I think
Copy !req
460. when the rules came out in 2009, everyone came out with the design of a car and
Copy !req
461. they started out, and every year after that it is an evolution of that car.
Copy !req
462. And they started off on the wrong foot and they've been on the wrong foot since then.
Copy !req
463. One of the things I thought, you had to do a lot of PR work at McLaren, didn't you? Mm.
Copy !req
464. Everybody knows that is dreadful. Yeah.
Copy !req
465. "Buy this terrible thing that sponsors our car."
Copy !req
466. Is there going to be less of that? A lot less, yes. A lot less? Yes.
Copy !req
467. That is good enough. Why did you not just say because you have to do less
Copy !req
468. standing around talking rubbish? It's not that.
Copy !req
469. There were so many good things about the opportunity to go
Copy !req
470. somewhere where they are struggling- and hopefully be
Copy !req
471. a part of something that will get somewhere and become great.
Copy !req
472. Michael did it years ago with Ferrari.
Copy !req
473. No other driver has done that really, so I want to do something like that.
Copy !req
474. So we needn't expect to see you
Copy !req
475. leading everybody around from pole position?
Copy !req
476. You definitely should not expect that this year.
Copy !req
477. Because initial testing has not been completely successful so far? No.
Copy !req
478. It wasn't good. Brake failure on my- 14th lap. What speed? Pretty fast.
Copy !req
479. Yeah. I was at the end of the back straight going into turn six
Copy !req
480. and hit the brakes at 180 mph, 190,- and then nothing happened.
Copy !req
481. I just went straight in...
Copy !req
482. So when you put your foot on the brake pedal
Copy !req
483. and you're going 180 and nothing happens. Poo?
Copy !req
484. No, you do swear though. You have time to think of a swear word? Yes, you do.
Copy !req
485. And you have time to brace. Do you?
Copy !req
486. Yes, so I was going towards the wall and
Copy !req
487. I remember just holding on for dear- life knowing it was going to hurt.
Copy !req
488. Did it hurt? It did. Particularly in my legs.
Copy !req
489. For some reason, I don't know, I went in straight ahead,
Copy !req
490. but my legs seem to hurt when I go straight into a wall.
Copy !req
491. Now, I do know what I need to talk to you about.
Copy !req
492. The handbrake in the modern car.
Copy !req
493. Have you ever thought, "If I pull this, she...?" I am sure I have.
Copy !req
494. In the first years that I was driving, I'm sure.
Copy !req
495. We were discussing this earlier. It is one of the weirdest things.
Copy !req
496. We are all fairly clear, girls don't like men who do
Copy !req
497. handbrake turns, but we think they do. My girlfriend loves it.
Copy !req
498. Does she? I have a good story about my handbrake turns.
Copy !req
499. Years ago I was at a karting race in Italy with Nico as my team mate.
Copy !req
500. It was 2000.
Copy !req
501. Me, my dad and Keke Rosberg,
Copy !req
502. were on our way to the track and my dad was driving down this
Copy !req
503. country lane, which off the edge of the road drops down into a field
Copy !req
504. and there is a metre drop.
Copy !req
505. Keke all of a sudden just pulls the- handbrake while my dad is driving.
Copy !req
506. And my dad doesn't really know how to drive that well.
Copy !req
507. He thinks he's a great driver... He's not here to argue.
Copy !req
508. Lost the back end of the car and put it down into the ditch
Copy !req
509. and we had to leave it there and walk to the track.
Copy !req
510. There wasn't even a girl in the car? Who was Keke trying to impress?
Copy !req
511. I don't know. Your dad. My dad, yes. Keke is gay!
Copy !req
512. And on that bombshell...
Copy !req
513. Now, I know that you have been very much looking forward to
Copy !req
514. coming back here. Yes, I have. Have been here before. Yes, 2008.
Copy !req
515. Now most guests do a lap, take the weather on the chin,
Copy !req
516. snow, ice, rain, and then go away. You did not do that.
Copy !req
517. You were cross, weren't you? I was not happy that it was raining.
Copy !req
518. It was wet. I am told that you took our producer around the back...
Copy !req
519. .. and a deal was done that you could come back and try again
Copy !req
520. when the track was dry. Yes. This was a bloody quick time. 1.44.
Copy !req
521. And it was wet. Wet and oily. Oily, was it? Get it right. Yes.
Copy !req
522. Racing drivers' excuses, but... I thought wet was all it said, but it's wet and oily.
Copy !req
523. Wet and oily, you said.
Copy !req
524. You said someone in the last corner dumped some oil.
Copy !req
525. It had come out of Hammond's hair.
Copy !req
526. Obviously, thorn in your side here,- Sebastian sits at the top.
Copy !req
527. That irritates you? Mm-hm.
Copy !req
528. He's had the best car for God knows how many years
Copy !req
529. and is also the quickest on Top Gear, so... You wanted to come and do something about that?
Copy !req
530. Every driver wants...
Copy !req
531. I remember when Rubens came and did the time.
Copy !req
532. We went to a drivers' briefing in Germany. He brought everyone a shirt.
Copy !req
533. He gave himself, "I beat The Stig" and everyone else "The Stig beat me."
Copy !req
534. So you didn't do your lap today? No.
Copy !req
535. You came down and did the lap many months ago.
Copy !req
536. Who would like to see Lewis practising for his lap?
Copy !req
537. Yes
Copy !req
538. Let's have a look.
Copy !req
539. There he goes. Second to last corner catches all of our guests out,
Copy !req
540. including one Lewis Hamilton.
Copy !req
541. Was that me? Yes.
Copy !req
542. I only put it on to make all the other guests feel better
Copy !req
543. because they are like, "No, I have spun off."
Copy !req
544. Now they can go, "At least Lewis Hamilton did exactly the same- thing in exactly the same place."
Copy !req
545. Nevertheless, you then lined up to do your lap again.
Copy !req
546. Who here would like to see it?Yes.
Copy !req
547. Here we go.
Copy !req
548. It is, of course, the old Liana.
Copy !req
549. That was a good gear change.
Copy !req
550. Come on, baby!
Copy !req
551. Yes, we do not use the Cee'd for Formula One drivers.
Copy !req
552. You all have to drive that. It's nice to see it back looking tall and ungainly and slow.
Copy !req
553. 'I thought you were determined to go fastest?'
Copy !req
554. 'I was.' 'Singing. It's like Kimi Raikkonen looking at the planes.'
Copy !req
555. Whoo!
Copy !req
556. 'Look where you're going.
Copy !req
557. 'Is this the sort of man who looks like he's determined
Copy !req
558. 'to go faster than Sebastian Vettel?'
Copy !req
559. 'Look at that, I didn't even cut the corner.' 'I'm very impressed.'
Copy !req
560. Not surprised, but I'm very impressed.
Copy !req
561. 'Here we go.'
Copy !req
562. 'That was to the cameraman.' 'I know.'
Copy !req
563. 'That was close to the tyres.'
Copy !req
564. 'A couple of bites at the cherry. That's nicely done.'
Copy !req
565. 'It actually looks like it handles quite well, bless it.' 'It does.'
Copy !req
566. 'And there we are, everyone, across the line.'
Copy !req
567. There is no point asking you where you want to come. You know. You know where you want to be.
Copy !req
568. Well, Lewis Hamilton. Mm-mm. It was a 1.44 that Sebastian did.
Copy !req
569. Lewis Hamilton, you did it in... one...
Copy !req
570. 42.
Copy !req
571. Unbelievable. Unbelievably fast time.
Copy !req
572. Wa-hey!
Copy !req
573. I will leave it there.
Copy !req
574. You weren't even concentrating.
Copy !req
575. Wow. Holy crap. Pleased? I'm really surprised.
Copy !req
576. It didn't even look like you were concentrating. I was.
Copy !req
577. It has been months and you guys wouldn't even tell me.
Copy !req
578. No, we never tell anybody.
Copy !req
579. I was thinking to myself, "I'm going to be so disappointed in myself
Copy !req
580. "if I didn't do a competitive time." Anyway, he has now hung himself.
Copy !req
581. And obviously everybody here is very pleased to have a Brit
Copy !req
582. back on the top of the leaderboard.-Yes.
Copy !req
583. When I say everybody, there is one man who is not pleased. The Stig.
Copy !req
584. He knew about this time months ago when you did the lap.
Copy !req
585. This week he left the country.
Copy !req
586. He went to North Korea to do an experiment. We don't know what.
Copy !req
587. So apart from him everyone is thrilled.
Copy !req
588. Ladies and gentlemen, the fastest man we've ever had - Lewis Hamilton.
Copy !req
589. Well done, mate. That was worth coming back for.
Copy !req
590. Without a doubt.
Copy !req
591. Now, a couple of weeks back
Copy !req
592. we finished our American road trip at the Mexican border.
Copy !req
593. The last one there had to cross over- and test something called
Copy !req
594. the Mastretta, which is a new sports car being made there.
Copy !req
595. Now, Top Gear is not very popular in Mexico
Copy !req
596. because of some comments that were made on the show.
Copy !req
597. And, unfortunately,
Copy !req
598. the man who lost that race,
Copy !req
599. and would therefore have to go into Mexico
Copy !req
600. and test the Mastretta was the man who made those comments -
Copy !req
601. our Director of International Relations,
Copy !req
602. Boutros Boutros Hammond.
Copy !req
603. OK, so, here we are in Mexico but it's all right,
Copy !req
604. I have everything under control.
Copy !req
605. You see?
Copy !req
606. An angry Mexican looks in, they'll see Jeremy,
Copy !req
607. and they hate Jeremy just as much as they hate me.
Copy !req
608. Look at me!
Copy !req
609. Power! Oh, everything's rubbish.
Copy !req
610. Except, no, cos I am now Jeremy,
Copy !req
611. so they'll still cut my head off and then...
Copy !req
612. I haven't thought this through at all, have I?
Copy !req
613. I'm not going to bother with that.
Copy !req
614. OK, let's get this test over with
Copy !req
615. as quickly as possible and get out of here.
Copy !req
616. 'Eventually, I found a place where no-one could see me
Copy !req
617. 'and I could get on with some serious road testing.'
Copy !req
618. So, what have we got here?
Copy !req
619. Well, its full name is the Mastretta MXT
Copy !req
620. and this is the first fully home-grown Mexican car.
Copy !req
621. 'Now, when most countries make their first car,
Copy !req
622. 'it's something cheap and practical for the masses.
Copy !req
623. 'But what the Mexicans have done is skip the intro
Copy !req
624. 'and gone straight for a sports car.'
Copy !req
625. Any similarities between this and an-early Lotus Elise are not accidental.
Copy !req
626. It's small, it's compact, leather bucket seats,
Copy !req
627. suede-ish trim here and there.
Copy !req
628. Steering wheel no bigger thana tortilla, which is a good thing.
Copy !req
629. 'The interior, the chassisand the body are all Mexican made.
Copy !req
630. 'But the 2.0 litre turbo engineis actually from over the border.'
Copy !req
631. It's a Ford and it makes 250bhp,
Copy !req
632. enough to take the Mastretta to 60 in 4.9 seconds.
Copy !req
633. Which could be useful if, say, somebody was trying to chase you.
Copy !req
634. 'Unlike some lightweight sports cars,
Copy !req
635. 'the Mastretta offers luxuries such as air-con and a stereo.'
Copy !req
636. Put the radio on.
Copy !req
637. MEXICAN SONG PLAYSOh, yeah, my favourite. I love this.
Copy !req
638. 'Despite the equipment, the MXT is no fatty -
Copy !req
639. 'weighing in at just 1,050 kilograms
Copy !req
640. 'thanks to a chassis made of carbon fibre and aluminium.'
Copy !req
641. You can see how they've tried to keep
Copy !req
642. all the car's weight between the wheels,
Copy !req
643. which is why there is absolutely no
Copy !req
644. overhang at the back or the front,
Copy !req
645. which is all well and good, still not sure about the styling, though.
Copy !req
646. It looks like an Audi TT that has been squashed in a vice
Copy !req
647. and that's a good thing. Very good. Morning!
Copy !req
648. Buenos dias.
Copy !req
649. The kind of thing Ferrari could learn a lot from. I shouldn't sit on it,
Copy !req
650. I don't want to scratch it. Look at that - sleek.
Copy !req
651. Yeah!
Copy !req
652. 'The really good thing about the Mastretta
Copy !req
653. 'is that it pretty much does what it says on the tin.'
Copy !req
654. For a simple, uncomplicated, little, track-day car,
Copy !req
655. you want it to feel like a go-kart.
Copy !req
656. This kind of does.
Copy !req
657. It does grip.
Copy !req
658. I was waiting for understeer then, there wasn't any.
Copy !req
659. The gear linkage, always difficult when the engine is behind you,
Copy !req
660. works very well.
Copy !req
661. 'But it's not without faults.'
Copy !req
662. The bonnet rattles about a bit.
Copy !req
663. The windscreen wipers occasionally set off
Copy !req
664. for a wanderall on their own without being asked.
Copy !req
665. The seals around the windows are terrible, hence the noise.
Copy !req
666. And it makes a hell of a noise over the bumps,
Copy !req
667. of which there are a few in Mexico.
Copy !req
668. 'At 37,000, it's also nearlyten grand more than a Lotus Elise.
Copy !req
669. 'And, unfortunately for me, the fuel tank is small.'
Copy !req
670. Hola. Petrolo pumpo numero uno, por favor.
Copy !req
671. 'Despite the flaws, inside the Mastretta is a good little car,
Copy !req
672. 'just waiting to be finished.'
Copy !req
673. The thing is, we have kind of been here before in a way.
Copy !req
674. James and Jeremy, when they went to China,
Copy !req
675. were road testing their first attempt at a car
Copy !req
676. and it wasn't brilliant.
Copy !req
677. First attempts never are but, and who knows, with more time
Copy !req
678. and more practice, one day the name Mastretta
Copy !req
679. might really stand for something.
Copy !req
680. I think, on the whole, that went pretty well.
Copy !req
681. That car's been behind me for a while now. He's following, isn't he?
Copy !req
682. That is... He's... He's following me.
Copy !req
683. Yeah.
Copy !req
684. Yeah, I know. Really? Really?
Copy !req
685. What? Were you just being nice so you weren't beheaded?
Copy !req
686. No, no, like I said, it isgenuinely quite a good little car.
Copy !req
687. Once they sort out some quality issues it shows real promise.
Copy !req
688. Well, listen, the hatchet is now buried, OK?
Copy !req
689. I think, thanks to Ban Ki-Hammond, we can now move on
Copy !req
690. because, tonight,
Copy !req
691. we are subjecting the new Kia Cee'd to many, many thorough tests.
Copy !req
692. And coming up now is the most thorough test of them all.
Copy !req
693. Can you play rugby in it?
Copy !req
694. 'Since we were being thorough, we didn't bother with some minor league
Copy !req
695. 'club ground but headed instead for the home of English rugby...'
Copy !req
696. "The World In Union"
Copy !req
697. '.. Twickenham.'
Copy !req
698. OK, I'm going to be captaining the grey team and the silver team
Copy !req
699. will be captained by a man who knows this ground incredibly well.
Copy !req
700. He drives past it almost every day. James. Jeremy.
Copy !req
701. Rules of car rugby. Yeah, and I've got a question straightaway.
Copy !req
702. Which is? On behalf of the viewers, I suspect,
Copy !req
703. don't you have to pass it backwards?
Copy !req
704. In real rugby, yes. That's not possible. So, we're not doing that?
Copy !req
705. Are we allowed to do this? What, here? Yes. Yes!
Copy !req
706. Has anybody said "hallowed ground" yet? Not yet.
Copy !req
707. Can if you want. Go on then.
Copy !req
708. On this hallowed ground, we are about to play car rugby.
Copy !req
709. 'In our game, the Cee'd will be the speedy backs.
Copy !req
710. 'And up front, we'll be using Kia Sportages as the hard men -
Copy !req
711. 'the forwards.
Copy !req
712. 'So, all we need now is a ref.'
Copy !req
713. OK, are you ready, James May? Yes. I'd just point out that
Copy !req
714. the referee can't speak and he doesn't know the rules.
Copy !req
715. But, yes, I'm ready.
Copy !req
716. 'As team captains, Clarkson and I were both in cars numbered four.
Copy !req
717. And punt!
Copy !req
718. Yes! They're reversing.
Copy !req
719. Look, I'm frightening them!
Copy !req
720. Argh! I've lost it. Forwards, forwards.
Copy !req
721. Here we go. May is ready to go through the gap. Yes!
Copy !req
722. Oh, it's still mine.
Copy !req
723. No, I've lost it.
Copy !req
724. Oh, look at this. He's carrying it!
Copy !req
725. He's picked up the ball and he's running with it.
Copy !req
726. 'Bravely, James tried to block my beefy forward.'
Copy !req
727. I think we can get this back.
Copy !req
728. Oh!
Copy !req
729. Well done, men. Well done! I'm loving your play.
Copy !req
730. 'Then, grey five broke free.'
Copy !req
731. Yes, I'm here and ready.
Copy !req
732. Yes! Yes!
Copy !req
733. Yes! No! BLEEP!
Copy !req
734. Yes!
Copy !req
735. Ye-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-es!
Copy !req
736. What a try!
Copy !req
737. Whoo-hah!
Copy !req
738. 'Having established the Cee'd could score a try,
Copy !req
739. 'it was now time to see if it could do the next bit.'
Copy !req
740. OK, time for a conversion.
Copy !req
741. Why does he do that? Why does Jonny Wilkinson do this?
Copy !req
742. Right, here we go.
Copy !req
743. At Twickenham!
Copy !req
744. Yes!
Copy !req
745. No, no, no, no!
Copy !req
746. Rubbish.
Copy !req
747. Fall in, grey.
Copy !req
748. Come on, winger! Come on!
Copy !req
749. I should explain, James May is using a diesel,
Copy !req
750. it has a higher top speed
Copy !req
751. than my 1.6 litre petrol
Copy !req
752. but I have better acceleration, less weight.
Copy !req
753. Oh, no, this is bad. They're free.
Copy !req
754. Come on, winger.
Copy !req
755. Winger. Winger.
Copy !req
756. Nice play, guys. Nice play.
Copy !req
757. Ooh! Violent move there. Must be James.
Copy !req
758. And was.
Copy !req
759. Keep it in. Keep it in
Copy !req
760. SIREN BLARES A-ha! It's gone out.
Copy !req
761. I think you'll find that's a grey throw-in. What's a grey throw-in?
Copy !req
762. This is a grey car. No, but your bloke knocked that out. He didn't!
Copy !req
763. He did! He didn't. I'm going to go and ask the ref.
Copy !req
764. Whose throw-in was that?
Copy !req
765. Silver? Grey? Can you point?
Copy !req
766. The worst referee I've ever come across.
Copy !req
767. I told James the ref had said it was a grey throw-in.
Copy !req
768. So now it's time for our first lineout.
Copy !req
769. This is a very useful feature of the Cee'd.
Copy !req
770. It's small, compact,
Copy !req
771. so you can get a good run-up for taking a lineout.
Copy !req
772. Here we go. And... a bit of wheel-spin and punt!
Copy !req
773. Oh, push, push, push!
Copy !req
774. I'm against the bigger man... car!
Copy !req
775. Use that torque!
Copy !req
776. Ah, they're only front-wheel drive,- those Sportages, but they have power.
Copy !req
777. Come on, team!
Copy !req
778. Where's the ball gone? There it is.
Copy !req
779. James had the ball and was heading for the try line.
Copy !req
780. Dribbling... What's it called in rugby?
Copy !req
781. Running with it.
Copy !req
782. But we soon put a stop to that.
Copy !req
783. Ooh! Oh!
Copy !req
784. So now, my grey team had the advantage.
Copy !req
785. Go, number 5. Go, go, go, go!
Copy !req
786. Ain't no stopping him now!
Copy !req
787. He's on the move. He's in the groove!
Copy !req
788. Yes!
Copy !req
789. Come on, number three!
Copy !req
790. That is a try.
Copy !req
791. HORNS BEEP, SIREN WAILS
Copy !req
792. This is hopeless. We're getting thrashed at this.
Copy !req
793. Weirdly, my team let me have another go at a conversion.
Copy !req
794. Right, I'm going for a massive, massive, massive, kick this time.
Copy !req
795. Go over!
Copy !req
796. Yes! Yes!
Copy !req
797. It's a big oooooooooooooooooooooone!
Copy !req
798. At this point, the ref signalled half-time.
Copy !req
799. And, in the dressing rooms, we had the obligatory team talks.
Copy !req
800. Right, chaps, we are fine athletes,- I think anyone can see that.
Copy !req
801. But there is a lot we can learn from actual rugby players.
Copy !req
802. This was drawn up for a recent match they played
Copy !req
803. and this is what I want you to concentrate on in the second half -
Copy !req
804. mindset, go for it, enjoy it, never give in, OK?
Copy !req
805. And I think we can add a fourth to that, which is ram James May. OK?
Copy !req
806. Ram him whenever you see him and ram him hard.
Copy !req
807. Really hard.
Copy !req
808. Gentleman, I don't want to put too fine a point on this.
Copy !req
809. It's half-time, we're losing, you're a bit crap.
Copy !req
810. Now, when we're on the attack we're getting very messy.
Copy !req
811. Go up the pitch together in formation,
Copy !req
812. so we can pass straight up but be ready to come back down again.
Copy !req
813. Very important, reversing if necessary.
Copy !req
814. If not, you can get to the other end
Copy !req
815. and you can quite easily do a handbrake turn around the post.
Copy !req
816. Either side, handbrake turn around the post,
Copy !req
817. up you go again to the top and kill- Clarkson. That's all you have to do.
Copy !req
818. Any questions?
Copy !req
819. 'We knew, as the second half began,- we had it all to do.'
Copy !req
820. Right, my blokes need to get in there and batter them.
Copy !req
821. 'The lads did just that.'
Copy !req
822. 'And soon I got a break.'
Copy !req
823. It's a run!
Copy !req
824. I'm coming in from the back!
Copy !req
825. I know that's Clarkson trying to tackle me.
Copy !req
826. Yes!
Copy !req
827. That's a try!
Copy !req
828. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
829. 'Naturally, I elected to take the conversion.'
Copy !req
830. Please miss. Please miss.
Copy !req
831. Oh, he's done it!
Copy !req
832. Give me that!
Copy !req
833. Damn it!
Copy !req
834. 'May's comeback wasn't the only problem.'
Copy !req
835. Oh dear, this hallowed turf is starting to get
Copy !req
836. a bit messed up, if I'm honest.
Copy !req
837. 'And things really weren't helped by the scrums.'
Copy !req
838. Oh no, it's... I'm stuck. I've dug a big hole. I can't get...
Copy !req
839. But on the upside, everything was lovely inside the Kias.
Copy !req
840. You see, normally when people play rugby they get hot
Copy !req
841. and they get sweaty but we're not having any of that here.
Copy !req
842. Got the air conditioning set just so. I'm not hot, I'm sitting down.
Copy !req
843. 'Whilst I was distracted by the Kia, Team May broke through again.'
Copy !req
844. We're on the run.
Copy !req
845. Stop him, somebody!
Copy !req
846. This is what we want!
Copy !req
847. Here we go.
Copy !req
848. That's a try!
Copy !req
849. Beautiful!
Copy !req
850. 'Worse still, James got a second successful conversion.'
Copy !req
851. Yes!
Copy !req
852. 'Putting his team ahead.'
Copy !req
853. They are destroying us in this phase of play.
Copy !req
854. 'With just two points in it
Copy !req
855. 'and the rain turning Twickenham's hallowed turf
Copy !req
856. 'into a muddy skating rink,
Copy !req
857. 'the play became dirty...
Copy !req
858. 'and violent.'
Copy !req
859. Classic rugby weather.
Copy !req
860. I must say, viewers,
Copy !req
861. at this point I have no idea what Jeremy has said in this test.
Copy !req
862. I can confirm, though, that the Cee'd crashes quite well.
Copy !req
863. Coming in for a try...
Copy !req
864. Boof!
Copy !req
865. Ooh, crikey, Moses!
Copy !req
866. These things are built like brick lavatories.
Copy !req
867. 'Which was good,
Copy !req
868. 'because on this surface stopping was becoming a bit of an issue.'
Copy !req
869. 'Football, that we used to play, car football...'
Copy !req
870. Ooh, chit!
Copy !req
871. '..is well-suited to a...'
Copy !req
872. CRUNCH!
Copy !req
873. Sorry. That was a total mistake. My fault.
Copy !req
874. That's not cricket.
Copy !req
875. It's actually not that bad. It'll buff out.
Copy !req
876. 'Despite some injuries,
Copy !req
877. 'all the Kias were still playing as- the match entered its final phase.'
Copy !req
878. Oh, he's on a run!
Copy !req
879. Oh, come on, men!
Copy !req
880. Pass it. Don't try and get through. Pass.
Copy !req
881. No!
Copy !req
882. It's us! It's us! Go, go, go!
Copy !req
883. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Copy !req
884. Looking good!
Copy !req
885. Oh, don't back up!
Copy !req
886. Go!
Copy !req
887. Yes! That is a try!
Copy !req
888. SCOREBOARD BUZZES, SIREN WAILS
Copy !req
889. Read it and weep!
Copy !req
890. I think we've learned two things tonight.
Copy !req
891. Number one, if you want to play rugby in a car,
Copy !req
892. the Cee'd is brilliant.
Copy !req
893. It's fast, it's agile and it's tough.
Copy !req
894. But, perhaps more importantly,
Copy !req
895. we've learned that grass is not a good surface.
Copy !req
896. I mean, we've only played one match here and look,
Copy !req
897. the pitch is completely ruined - absolutely ruined.
Copy !req
898. They're going to have to pave this over, really.
Copy !req
899. Hold on!
Copy !req
900. Hold on.
Copy !req
901. Chaps? What?
Copy !req
902. Do you know why they call it hallowed turf?
Copy !req
903. Erm...
Copy !req
904. Because it is hallowed. Do you know what hallowed means?
Copy !req
905. Temporary.
Copy !req
906. Yes, yes, James. "Our Father who art-in heaven, temporary be thy name."
Copy !req
907. Oh, yeah. I do think we owe everyone a apology. Yes, you do.
Copy !req
908. Because we've just shown strong pornography before the watershed.
Copy !req
909. Sorry, what? All that handbrake action.
Copy !req
910. Oh, yes.
Copy !req
911. Every single girl watching tonight will be cross-eyed.
Copy !req
912. Good point. They don't see two fat middle-aged men any more.
Copy !req
913. What they see are Bradley Cooper and Ryan Reynolds.
Copy !req
914. I'm not sure the handbrake lever is that effective. Yes, it is.
Copy !req
915. And on that bombshell, it is time to end.
Copy !req
916. Thank you so much for watching. Good night!
Copy !req
