1. Tonight, I get scared half to death
on our track,
Copy !req
2. We host our own art exhibition and the world
champion is in our reasonably priced car,
Copy !req
3. Thank you, everybody!
Copy !req
4. Thank you, Hello! Hello and welcome,
Copy !req
5. Welcome, everybody,
Copy !req
6. Now, a few years ago, we got very
excited by this, the Noble M400,
Copy !req
7. But then the man behind the company
that made it upped sticks and left
Copy !req
8. and then they stopped making it and then the
whole operation just disappeared from the radar,
Copy !req
9. Now though... it's back,
Copy !req
10. This is what it's come up with,
Copy !req
11. Designed and built by some blokes I've never
heard of on an industrial estate in Leicester,
Copy !req
12. it's called the M600,
Copy !req
13. Underneath
the rather featureless body,
Copy !req
14. the chassis is made not from
carbon fibre, but stainless steel,
Copy !req
15. The V8 that powers it
is lifted from this,
Copy !req
16. Yep, It uses the same engine,
Copy !req
17. albeit with a couple of turbo
chargers that Volvo use in the XC90,
Copy !req
18. So, built in Leicestershire from
bits of the Industrial Revolution
Copy !req
19. and powered by the engine
from a Volvo school bus,
Copy !req
20. And the cost? £200,000,
Copy !req
21. That does seem like a lot for a car
that has no satellite navigation,
Copy !req
22. no climate control, no airbag,
Copy !req
23. It doesn't even have
anti-lock brakes,
Copy !req
24. The men from Leicestershire
say ABS is just another example
Copy !req
25. of the nanny state sticking its
nose in, and that's very admirable,
Copy !req
26. But you can't help suspecting
the real reason it doesn't have ABS
Copy !req
27. is because when you're operating out
of a industrial unit in Leicestershire,
Copy !req
28. you can't really afford them,
Copy !req
29. There's another problem as well,
Copy !req
30. What kind of person looks at
the established range of supercars
Copy !req
31. and thinks,
I don't like any of them?
Copy !req
32. However, it turns out that there is
a reason why you might choose a Noble,
Copy !req
33. rather than a Porsche, or a Ferrari
Copy !req
34. or a Lamborghini,
Copy !req
35. or an Aston Martin,
Copy !req
36. or a McLaren Mercedes,
Copy !req
37. You see, in terms of sheer speed,
the Noble can blow all of that lot
Copy !req
38. into the middle of last week,
Copy !req
39. Let me show you
what I'm on about here,
Copy !req
40. I'm currently doing 40 mph
in second gear, Ready? Foot down,
Copy !req
41. And there's 60,
Copy !req
42. 40-60 in one second, One!
Copy !req
43. In fourth gear,
100 to 120 in two seconds,
Copy !req
44. 100 to 130 in three seconds,
Copy !req
45. It does 150 to 170 so quick that your
eyeballs bounce off the back of your skull...
Copy !req
46. like squash balls!
Copy !req
47. Break it, break it! Oh, my God!
Copy !req
48. You have to push, There's very
little servo assistance there,
Copy !req
49. If you push too hard, you'll lock
them up because there's no ABS,
Copy !req
50. God, it's quick!
Copy !req
51. That's mind-blowingly fast,
Copy !req
52. That is properly,
Copy !req
53. head-alteringly quick,
Copy !req
54. Flat out,
it'll do 225 miles an hour,
Copy !req
55. Mainly because the engine,
despite the Volvo connection,
Copy !req
56. develops 650 horsepower,
Copy !req
57. The whole car only weighs 1,250kg,
Copy !req
58. And the news
keeps on getting better,
Copy !req
59. This down here
is exactly the same switch
Copy !req
60. that a pilot uses in a Tornado
fighter-bomber to fire the missiles,
Copy !req
61. It was specifically designed so it couldn't
be used by accident and that is a good thing,
Copy !req
62. Because in here, what it does
Copy !req
63. is turn the traction control off,
Copy !req
64. Argh! I wish I'd kept it on!
Copy !req
65. I really wish I'd kept it on!
Copy !req
66. The margin for error
Copy !req
67. in most supercars is actually quite
wide, but in this, it really isn't,
Copy !req
68. Stop,
Copy !req
69. It's a constant nightmare,
Copy !req
70. 1% too much speed going into a
corner, you get understeer like that,
Copy !req
71. 1% too much throttle to
correct it, you've got oversteer,
Copy !req
72. 1% wrong with the steering,
you're going to spin,
Copy !req
73. Remember, there are no electronic
driver aids to help you out,
Copy !req
74. There's no medevac chopper,
Copy !req
75. You get it wrong,
you're on your own!
Copy !req
76. There is a fantastic
sweet spot in this thing,
Copy !req
77. But even when you find it, you're
often too terrified to enjoy the moment,
Copy !req
78. To really enjoy it
and to find it regularly...
Copy !req
79. you have to be a much
better driver than I am,
Copy !req
80. I'm not really doing this justice,
Copy !req
81. Driving it fast, then,
you need to be good,
Copy !req
82. But weirdly, to drive it at all,
you don't,
Copy !req
83. Happily, if you wind the engine down
to 550 horsepower or 450,
Copy !req
84. which you can do using
this switch here,
Copy !req
85. it becomes a different animal,
It becomes completely docile,
Copy !req
86. Calm, No harder to drive
than... a Nissan Micra,
Copy !req
87. And like the old Noble, it's
quiet and extremely comfortable,
Copy !req
88. It really does ride beautifully,
Copy !req
89. Summing this car up, then, is hard,
because let's be honest,
Copy !req
90. there are several very good reasons
why you shouldn't buy one,
Copy !req
91. But there is one
very good reason why you should...
Copy !req
92. Losers!
Copy !req
93. So it's that fast? That edgy?
That edgy?
Copy !req
94. Honestly, it's the nearest I've ever come
to collecting a camera car on a shoot,
Copy !req
95. I think that was the first time I've ever
seen you properly scared on our track,
Copy !req
96. Oh, I was, No, I really was,
Copy !req
97. It's not so bad when it's dry, but when it's
wet you have to have the reactions of a housefly,
Copy !req
98. So not a fat, balding middle-aged man,
then?
Copy !req
99. Not that, which is why we're now going
to hand it over to our tame racing driver,
Copy !req
100. Some say that you shouldn't
go round to his house
Copy !req
101. for your Christmas lunch, unless you
enjoy the great taste of seagull,
Copy !req
102. And that the reason
he always wears a helmet
Copy !req
103. is because a man once smashed him in the
face with a model of Salisbury Cathedral,
Copy !req
104. All we know is
he's called the Stig!
Copy !req
105. And he's off! We've had rain for the past
few weeks now and we've got a dusting of snow,
Copy !req
106. Still hoping for good things,
since Stig is one of the few things
Copy !req
107. that can really get to the
bottom of a Noble, He loves them!
Copy !req
108. That is nice through there,
Beautiful on the way out,
Copy !req
109. In the bleak midwinter...
Copy !req
110. Appropriate music for this weather,
Copy !req
111. Performing in the style of
a Kray brother's funeral there,
Copy !req
112. A bit of twitchiness on the way in, but tasty
on the way out of Chicago, now Hammerhead,
Copy !req
113. He came in very fast, understeering
as I discovered earlier,
Copy !req
114. but Stiggy knows how to drive
through and find that sweet spot,
Copy !req
115. Oh, God
Oh, my king...
Copy !req
116. Right, time now to unleash the
twin-turbo kick in the kidneys,
Copy !req
117. He does seem to be sawing
at the wheel a lot in there,
Copy !req
118. It is a brute, this car,
but the Stig isn't fazed,
Copy !req
119. That would be literally impossible,
Two corners left,
Copy !req
120. He's still working hard, but the
car itself looks really composed,
Copy !req
121. Coming up to Gambon,
Copy !req
122. slices through there
and across the line!
Copy !req
123. OK, Here it is! Here it is,
Copy !req
124. It goes, mmm...
Copy !req
125. Hang on,
you've just gone above a 599,
Copy !req
126. Yes, And above a Scuderia,
Copy !req
127. That's that fast Lambo,
Copy !req
128. That's an Enzo up there!
Copy !req
129. Past the Veyron,
Past the Zonda convertible...
Copy !req
130. Whoa!
Copy !req
131. So it's expensive, but it works?
Copy !req
132. Excellent, Right,
Copy !req
133. Now we will do the news
and we begin with the this -
Copy !req
134. it's a new Aston Martin,
It's called the Rapide,
Copy !req
135. You can think of it as a DB9
with two extra doors,
Copy !req
136. That means there's room back here
for two extra fully-grown adults
Copy !req
137. to enjoy the 470 horsepower,
V12 motoring experience,
Copy !req
138. And they can enjoy exquisite details, such as
these magnetically located grab handles, look,
Copy !req
139. It won't flap around
when you're driving along,
Copy !req
140. All this is yours for £140,000,
Copy !req
141. Now,
that is quite a bit more expensive
Copy !req
142. than Porsche's four-door,
the Panamera,
Copy !req
143. but there are two very good reasons
why you should choose the Aston Martin,
Copy !req
144. Firstly, and unlike the Porsche,
it does look rather magnificent,
Copy !req
145. Secondly, most importantly,
this is quintessentially British,
Copy !req
146. Despite the fact
that it's made in Austria,
Copy !req
147. Which I think is in Germany,
Copy !req
148. OK, Now, as you can see,
we are surrounded here
Copy !req
149. by a mountain of motoring-related
Christmas present ideas,
Copy !req
150. Oh, yes,
Copy !req
151. We haven't got time to get through all
of it, but I want to start with this,
Copy !req
152. Perfume, as we know,
is a very popular Christmas gift,
Copy !req
153. Big names, Givenchy, Chanel,
Now look... The RAC,
Copy !req
154. Yes, the RAC has launched this,
Copy !req
155. They're calling it Eau De Voiture,
Copy !req
156. Ooh, sounds promising!
Copy !req
157. What you do is
you spray it into your car
Copy !req
158. and it makes it smell
like a minicab,
Copy !req
159. It's quite strong!
Copy !req
160. My eyes!
Copy !req
161. You cretin!
Copy !req
162. The thing is, what it does,
and I've really got a lot of it now,
Copy !req
163. is it's one of those smells that makes
you think it's covering up other smells,
Copy !req
164. Like Femme Fresh,
Copy !req
165. Because it's a very strong smell in it's own right,
but it suggests that there are other things masking,
Copy !req
166. You get notes, don't you? You get
notes, undercurrents, Suggestions of...
Copy !req
167. I can smell the fruity stuff,
but also a bit of stale wee,
Copy !req
168. Sick?
Copy !req
169. I can get a really beery burp,
Copy !req
170. All the things
you'd expect in a minicab,
Copy !req
171. I have another gift suggestion here
for Christmas,
Copy !req
172. Are you fed up with people bumping
into you in a crowd situation?
Copy !req
173. Well, I have the solution here
Copy !req
174. with these small, ear-mounted
human indicators, I kid you not,
Copy !req
175. What happens is, I'm walking along,
say in a shopping centre,
Copy !req
176. Here I am in a shopping centre
and you'll be the crowd?
Copy !req
177. There's a danger of jostling here,
because I'm going to that shop on my right,
Copy !req
178. You can indicate!
Copy !req
179. So now you know and you can take evasive action,
Copy !req
180. Yes, Actually,
I fancy the record shop over there,
Copy !req
181. Everybody knows what's happening, I think it's a very
good gift,
Copy !req
182. So how much are they? Do we know?
Copy !req
183. Oh, I don't know, Some money,
Copy !req
184. Land Rover are taking
a very pragmatic approach
Copy !req
185. to the Christmas gift idea
and they have produced this,
Copy !req
186. It's the Land Rover distress
whistle and it will cost you £1,50,
Copy !req
187. I just want to paint the scene
for you, You're in the wilderness
Copy !req
188. in your Land Rover and you drive into
an impassable gully, You become stuck,
Copy !req
189. It starts to fill up with water,
Copy !req
190. You're out of food,
you're almost out of fuel,
Copy !req
191. You cannot get a signal
on your mobile phone
Copy !req
192. and you're bleeding heavily from a
severe abdominal wound, But it's OK!
Copy !req
193. HE BLOWS WHISTLE
Copy !req
194. If I was there with you in that
situation and you produced that whistle,
Copy !req
195. I would beat you to death,
Copy !req
196. Well, yes,
Copy !req
197. It's got everything
you need, really,
Copy !req
198. It has a web address here,
Copy !req
199. It's stitched into the collar
and then on the back,
Copy !req
200. That's classy,
Copy !req
201. Oh, yeah, Really, honestly, it's hard to
think of any way that this could be improved,
Copy !req
202. That says, I have a washing machine and
everything else I own is already in it,
Copy !req
203. But, James, you like a flowery
shirt, so why wouldn't you like that?
Copy !req
204. Well, why would you want
a web address?
Copy !req
205. Jeremy? Jeremy?
Copy !req
206. OK, this is a bad thing,
That's a bad thing,
Copy !req
207. It's got out of hand,
It's all right, No, it's gone out,
Copy !req
208. Relax,
Copy !req
209. That's actually quite...
Copy !req
210. Jeremy has
set fire to the Christmas presents!
Copy !req
211. I have actually set fire to
the Land Rover teddy bear, No,
Copy !req
212. You know
the smoking rules in Britain?
Copy !req
213. Sorry about that!
Copy !req
214. Anyway, look - I think...
Copy !req
215. It's still on fire!
Copy !req
216. It's smouldering, that's all,
Copy !req
217. Look at this!
Copy !req
218. It's a fork on one end and
a 10mm ring spanner on the other,
Copy !req
219. And the best thing is, there's
another spanner in the middle!
Copy !req
220. No, but this means
you can go seamlessly
Copy !req
221. from mending your motorcycle to
eating a pie without even pausing,
Copy !req
222. Wow!
Copy !req
223. You say wow,
Copy !req
224. This is some packaging,
Copy !req
225. You know the sort of packaging? You're
going to sever your fingers getting in there,
Copy !req
226. When you get in there,
you've got this metal thing,
Copy !req
227. Then you get underneath your car,
use what fingers you have left
Copy !req
228. from opening the packaging
to attach it to your exhaust pipe,
Copy !req
229. And then it makes a noise
which fools other road users
Copy !req
230. into thinking
that your car is turbo-charged,
Copy !req
231. Is it like that wastegate
noise when you lift off?
Copy !req
232. Brilliant,
Copy !req
233. We could attach you -
it would be easier,
Copy !req
234. It's not really going to fool anybody bolted
onto my Panda, whatever sort of noise it makes,
Copy !req
235. Chaps, you know how difficult
it is to choose the right calendar,
Copy !req
236. It's a big commitment,
Copy !req
237. For 12 months,
you have to live with it,
Copy !req
238. So I'm a bit stumped on what I'm going to
use next year, because there's this one,
Copy !req
239. This is Her Majesty's
Prisons of England,
Copy !req
240. Different picture every month,
Copy !req
241. Oh, nice!
Copy !req
242. But then I found, I think, the
solution to my calendar problems,
Copy !req
243. The Unofficial...
Copy !req
244. Oh, yes!
Copy !req
245. Who did that? It's awful!
Copy !req
246. You can have it, James,
I've got loads,
Copy !req
247. Why are you
drunk in all the pictures?
Copy !req
248. It looks like all the pictures were
taken coming out of award ceremonies,
Copy !req
249. so, yes, I probably was drunk,
Copy !req
250. Because it's unofficial, you all go and
buy one, he receives not one single penny,
Copy !req
251. I know, I know!
Thank you for publicising it,
Copy !req
252. It's very kind of you,
Copy !req
253. We'd like to recommend this
calendar, Everybody go and buy it,
Copy !req
254. Get rid of that thing!
Copy !req
255. Let's do
the rest of the show like that,
Copy !req
256. Why does everything get
broken in our Christmas thing?
Copy !req
257. As we know, the Lottery Fund
has spent millions of pounds
Copy !req
258. turning old warehouses in places like Liverpool
and the West Midlands into art galleries,
Copy !req
259. And we also know that they have
all been an unmitigated failure,
Copy !req
260. We think the reason for this is because
they haven't got any cars in them,
Copy !req
261. Art experts will tell you that cars
aren't art, We think they can be,
Copy !req
262. Back in the 1970s, BMW started
making things like this over here,
Copy !req
263. It's a three-litre CSL, but the bodywork has
been painted by American artist Alexander Calder,
Copy !req
264. Then in the '90s,
there was a three-series race car,
Copy !req
265. The body's been painted by artist
Sandro Chia, Then over here,
Copy !req
266. an 850 CSI - that's been painted
by British artist David Hockney,
Copy !req
267. Provincial galleries would never
accept this sort of thing these days,
Copy !req
268. and that, we reckon,
is exactly why they're failing,
Copy !req
269. So we decided to take over the
Mima Gallery in Middlesbrough,
Copy !req
270. And using nothing
but motoring-based art,
Copy !req
271. we would attempt to get 30,000 visitors
through the door up North in a single week,
Copy !req
272. And that's as many as Tate
Britain gets in a week in London,
Copy !req
273. This is the North,
which is where northerners live,
Copy !req
274. And this is the art gallery
we've taken over,
Copy !req
275. We'd simply clear out the paintings
northern people plainly don't want to see,
Copy !req
276. and fill it with motoring
exhibits that hopefully they do,
Copy !req
277. To decide what these exhibits would be, we
went to our secret motoring art base in Surrey,
Copy !req
278. It's a car,
Copy !req
279. The artist claims that he makes
these by painting them
Copy !req
280. and then driving a remote control
over them, I mean, I like it,
Copy !req
281. I like it,
Copy !req
282. Yes, put it in! Oh!
Copy !req
283. It's Damon Hill in the wet,
Copy !req
284. That goes in,
Copy !req
285. What he should have done
is just given us that bit,
Copy !req
286. That would now look like one of Monet's visions of
his lily pond, but it would be about Formula One,
Copy !req
287. It does have a Monet
quality to it, no question,
Copy !req
288. I'm sorry, gentlemen, this
is the worst painting I've ever seen
Copy !req
289. Or is it?
Copy !req
290. Maybe this is a commentary
on the superhuman,
Copy !req
291. almost alien nature of
a Formula One driver at this level,
Copy !req
292. Because clearly this isn't human,
Copy !req
293. That much is immediately apparent,
Copy !req
294. What it's done is suck the life out
of this corpse in the overalls her,
Copy !req
295. All of that is gone,
drained out by this creature,
Copy !req
296. This is coming with us,
This is properly amazing stuff,
Copy !req
297. And so is that, I think in
Middlesbrough this will go well,
Copy !req
298. Why-aye, a tab! They're refuelling
his car and he's having a tab,
Copy !req
299. That is, without doubt,
the centrepiece of our exhibition,
Copy !req
300. It's exquisite work,
Copy !req
301. It cannot go in!
Copy !req
302. We went round
the room ticking the yeses,
Copy !req
303. Look at the way they've captured
his moustache so beautifully here,
Copy !req
304. Not just that moustache, but
the other two moustaches as well,
Copy !req
305. So this is a collage
out of press comments about him,
Copy !req
306. I see,
Copy !req
307. Excellent, Definitely going in,
Copy !req
308. Oh, gentlemen!
Copy !req
309. Gentlemen! I bet you any money
that in the North,
Copy !req
310. people will be stunned by this,
It's a V8 Shark,
Copy !req
311. In addition to the pre-prepared art,
we've been making some ourselves,
Copy !req
312. James, for example,
is keen to make a sculpture,
Copy !req
313. I've decided to de-construct the car,
literally, as you can see, and artistically,
Copy !req
314. Then rather than try and rebuild it as
a sculpture that speaks about the car,
Copy !req
315. I'm going to do it as a sculpture that speaks
about my emotions, my feelings, when I drive a car,
Copy !req
316. Inspired to some extent by Picasso...
Copy !req
317. What you need to bear in mind
is if you can get an artist,
Copy !req
318. somebody with frizzy hair and sticky-out
teeth, to say it's art, then it's art,
Copy !req
319. While James set to work
on his big metal face,
Copy !req
320. Richard went off to create a modern day
interpretation of Constable's Hay Wain,
Copy !req
321. Right...
Copy !req
322. Unlike Richard, I'm not very good at
drawing, because I didn't go to art school,
Copy !req
323. So my painting will be done by this,
Copy !req
324. The 2005 Red Bull F1 car, Yep,
Copy !req
325. Its three-litre V10
will be my brush,
Copy !req
326. All we need now
is a tame racing driver,
Copy !req
327. Some say he has a massive chin,
and that's true, he does,
Copy !req
328. Because he's David Coulthard,
So are you ready for this?
Copy !req
329. I think so, I'm still trying
to get my head round the concept,
Copy !req
330. Well, the idea is very simple,
Copy !req
331. We are going to put
paintballs into the air box,
Copy !req
332. They will then shoot out of
the exhaust, and into the canvas
Copy !req
333. that I'll be holding behind the car,
Copy !req
334. so we'll sort of splatter the canvas
using this car as our brush,
Copy !req
335. Sounds beautiful,
Copy !req
336. So you need to go to 5,000,
Can you do that?
Copy !req
337. I can probably manage that,
Copy !req
338. Actually I might just put
some protection on my head,
Copy !req
339. I've done some weird things
in my life, but this is up there,
Copy !req
340. All right then, David, Ready!
Copy !req
341. Argh! Oh, God! Oh!
Copy !req
342. My gloves!
Copy !req
343. I'm not giving him mouth-to-mouth,
that's for sure,
Copy !req
344. Things were going badly for me, but
they were worse for Sir Henry May,
Copy !req
345. Every day, over 10,000 people go to the
National Gallery to see the Hay Wain,
Copy !req
346. More will come and see this, because it's
got more of a social statement about it,
Copy !req
347. Also, because I'd substituted
the Hay Wain for a Zonda,
Copy !req
348. It's poetry in paint,
Copy !req
349. One's now protected and using
a stronger aluminium canvas,
Copy !req
350. Coulthard and I were in business,
Copy !req
351. A plane of light
just bouncing off here,
Copy !req
352. Work it in, work it in...
Copy !req
353. With the paintball painting finished,
I was now busy on another creation,
Copy !req
354. What I'm doing is spraying the car with a special
paint that shows up best in ultra-violet light,
Copy !req
355. Sorry, sorry! So when I've finished, Mr Coulthard
is going to take it for a spin round the track,
Copy !req
356. It will streak, showing me
where the air flow has gone,
Copy !req
357. Sorry, sorry again, Sorry, mate,
Copy !req
358. With the car dripping wet,
David set off,
Copy !req
359. But unfortunately some of the paint
had gone on his visor,
Copy !req
360. Oh, dear!
Copy !req
361. After wiping his helmet, he set
off again to create some 200mph art,
Copy !req
362. You sprayed my helmet,
Copy !req
363. You shot one of my testicles,
Copy !req
364. Oh, I see, that helmet,
That was, I admit, a mistake,
Copy !req
365. but you should
see what has been achieved,
Copy !req
366. When we put this
under ultra-violet light...
Copy !req
367. Can we edit the spin out?
Copy !req
368. You promise?
Copy !req
369. Projects completed,
we reconvened at the secret base,
Copy !req
370. where our exhibits
were to be assessed by Rupert Maas,
Copy !req
371. an art dealer
from the Antiques Roadshow,
Copy !req
372. It was a lot better than this,
Copy !req
373. It's sort of still happening, isn't it?
Copy !req
374. It's performance art, because
it has streaked in a living way,
Copy !req
375. Yes...
Copy !req
376. It fell off the easel,
Copy !req
377. I mean, it really is nature and the
automotive world absolutely crashing together,
Copy !req
378. It's very good, Very good,
Copy !req
379. Quite, quite, I have to say, I think it is
probably more compost than art, but thank you,
Copy !req
380. Annoyingly, Rupert seemed to quite
interested in James May's big face,
Copy !req
381. It's called
Acceleration Face Number One,
Copy !req
382. I mean, I was inspired
to some extent by Der Blaue Reiter
Copy !req
383. and some of the works of that era, Exactly,
Copy !req
384. The African mask has had an influence on it, It's very
angular, it's quite simplistic, it's quite primitive,
Copy !req
385. No,
Copy !req
386. What does the expert think? Oh!
Copy !req
387. We can repair this, James,
Copy !req
388. You see?
Copy !req
389. The Mona Lisa of the scrapheap,
Copy !req
390. The rest of the visit
wasn't any better,
Copy !req
391. No,
Copy !req
392. No,
Copy !req
393. No,
Copy !req
394. Does it work on any level for you?
Copy !req
395. Does it have artistic merit?
Copy !req
396. So all of this is terrible?
Copy !req
397. Frankly, yes, Thank you,
Copy !req
398. I value your opinion, I won't
necessarily pay any attention to it,
Copy !req
399. In fact, none of us will, But thank you very much for
coming, Rupert,
Copy !req
400. Feeling a bit disheartened, we decided
to try and create our own BMW art car,
Copy !req
401. We need to agree on
a light source and a viewpoint,
Copy !req
402. Our genius plan was to paint the
inside of the car on the outside,
Copy !req
403. with James taking the bonnet,
me the side, and Jeremy the boot,
Copy !req
404. Can you tell what it is yet?
Copy !req
405. Jeremy, though,
didn't quite get the idea,
Copy !req
406. Right, red for the blood,
Copy !req
407. Er, mate...
Copy !req
408. What?
Copy !req
409. It's supposed to be
what's INSIDE the car,
Copy !req
410. How do you know there isn't
a horse's head in the boot?
Copy !req
411. For our final creation, we had to cut a car in
half, which meant using a dangerous plasma cutter,
Copy !req
412. That meant
we had to take precautions,
Copy !req
413. You can't do this with a hammer,
Copy !req
414. That's exactly why
you're taped to a chair,
Copy !req
415. This is like a scene
out of Reservoir Dogs,
Copy !req
416. Don't give us ideas,
Copy !req
417. Guys, where did you find that car?
Copy !req
418. It was just outside with
all the rest of them for this,
Copy !req
419. It says here,
RJO4 RWZ, it's a rental car,
Copy !req
420. We'll see how that pans out
later on,
Copy !req
421. but now it's time to put a
star in our reasonably priced car,
Copy !req
422. Now, my guest tonight won the 2009
Formula One World Drivers' Championship,
Copy !req
423. He won the 2009 World Constructors'
Championship for Brawn,
Copy !req
424. And when he was pipped to the BBC's
Sports Personality of the Year award
Copy !req
425. last weekend, by Ryan Giggs,
Copy !req
426. he won the 2009 trophy
for the best forced smile,
Copy !req
427. Let's see
if he's still gritting his teeth,
Copy !req
428. Ladies and gentlemen, Jenson Button!
Copy !req
429. Thank you,
Copy !req
430. He's here,
Copy !req
431. Hello to you, Well done,
Copy !req
432. Wooh!
Copy !req
433. Have a seat, Have a seat,
Copy !req
434. OK, that's the congratulations
over now the commiserations,
Copy !req
435. Because this
time last week...
Copy !req
436. Did anybody see
Sports Personality Of The Year?
Copy !req
437. Yes,
Copy !req
438. I mean, let's be honest, Ryan Giggs,
he's 73,
Copy !req
439. And he can still kick a football,
Copy !req
440. I think you do need an
award for this, actually,
Copy !req
441. We have actually got a clip of the
moment, If you want to look away,
Copy !req
442. Everyone else can see this,
here we go, This is the moment,
Copy !req
443. Well, that is a shock,
Copy !req
444. That's a big shock,
Copy !req
445. Yeah,
Copy !req
446. That is a... That is a rictus grin,
that is,
Copy !req
447. I could be an actor with that, no?
Copy !req
448. No, you couldn't,
Copy !req
449. You couldn't because what I loved
was when he said
Copy !req
450. I haven't got a speech ready I
thought, no, but the man behind you has,
Copy !req
451. So anyway, I just want to know because I'm
sure loads of people will be interested,
Copy !req
452. It was actually this time last year,
there you were gearing up for a new season,
Copy !req
453. You had got Ross Brawn on board
who's obviously a genius designer
Copy !req
454. and then the call comes through from Honda that
they're pulling out of the sport, How did that feel?
Copy !req
455. It was difficult, I had just got back from, I
was in Lanzarote doing some fitness training,
Copy !req
456. I was all ready for the new season,
Copy !req
457. I arrived at Gatwick and I got a
message from my manager saying,
Copy !req
458. it's over,
Copy !req
459. Honda are pulling out of the sport,
Copy !req
460. It was a really difficult thing
to take in, Because you know, will
Copy !req
461. were going to be racing in 2009, We were going to
have a competitive car, possibility of winning races,
Copy !req
462. There was a lot of work
that went into that car and
Copy !req
463. it would have been an absolute
tragedy if it wasn't on the grid,
Copy !req
464. So all I could do was stay focused and
try to help the team as much as I could,
Copy !req
465. And that's what we did, we got through a
difficult winter and we produced a car...
Copy !req
466. Now, you came here last time having not won a
race in Formula One and you had done about 14011,
Copy !req
467. And you said you'd cheerfully
give up the jets, the lifestyle, the Monte Carlo for that first win,
Copy !req
468. But the thing is you damn nearly did give up
all that lifestyle to go to Brawn, didn't you?
Copy !req
469. I mean how big a sort of cut
was it in terms of everything?
Copy !req
470. There were 700 odd people working at the
factory and they had to scale down the team
Copy !req
471. so obviously there were some redundancies,
which was tough, even for the people that stayed,
Copy !req
472. But we all gave as much as we could
and we tried to help as much as we can,
Copy !req
473. I suppose it would be impossible to
say, no, I want n million dollars
Copy !req
474. a year when people are
being made redundant,
Copy !req
475. Because you went to 20% of
your salary or something,
Copy !req
476. Can't remember the figure
at the moment,
Copy !req
477. But don't feel sorry for me,
Copy !req
478. But that first test that you did
Copy !req
479. in what would become the Brawn car,
were you surprised how fast it was?
Copy !req
480. I knew we had built a good
car because all the numbers
Copy !req
481. said so in the wind tunnel but until you
actually drive it, yeah, you don't know 100%,
Copy !req
482. But we bolted in the Mercedes Benz engine in the
back because obviously it wasn't made for that engine,
Copy !req
483. We had to sort of trim the chassis down and
make sure the gearbox fitted, just about fitted,
Copy !req
484. With some spaces and what have you,
Copy !req
485. And went out and tested it at Barcelona and after
five laps I really felt comfortable in the car,
Copy !req
486. And I came and I said, Guys, you know,
this is all right, This is a good baseline,
Copy !req
487. Even though it was a last minute
botch job to get the Mercedes engine,
Copy !req
488. Yes, yep, this fills pretty nice,
My engineer came up to me and said,
Copy !req
489. Seven-tenths, That's three years in Formula One,
Copy !req
490. It's massive, And then every race people were putting on
Copy !req
491. big packages and for us to try and
keep the advantage was impossible,
Copy !req
492. So, yeah, it's been a
very tricky season,
Copy !req
493. Leading the championship from
start to finish sounds easy,
Copy !req
494. But it's not,
Copy !req
495. It's really, really hard,
Copy !req
496. Cos I have to say,
I mean Brazil, I don't know
Copy !req
497. if anybody was watching Brazil
which was the penultimate race,
Copy !req
498. You had to come fourth and
then you were definitely
Copy !req
499. World Champion irrespective
of what anyone else did,
Copy !req
500. Let's just have a look at these clips of
you in that race needing to come fourth,
Copy !req
501. So that's big John, isn't it?
Copy !req
502. Grosjean, Yeah,
Copy !req
503. 'Can he do it?'
Copy !req
504. 'Another stunning piece of driving under pressure from
Button,'
Copy !req
505. Look at that
again, that's round the outside,
Copy !req
506. 'Wonderful move by
Button squeezed in there,'
Copy !req
507. We're almost doing 200 miles an hour there you can't really see
it from the camera but it's
Copy !req
508. Jesus that's so close,
Copy !req
509. 'Jenson Button through,'
Copy !req
510. 'I have to say,
he's been impressive,'
Copy !req
511. So this is now whatever
his name is, the Red Bull,
Copy !req
512. That was last of the late
breakers, wasn't it? Take that,
Copy !req
513. Great drive, That was the drive of a champion that was,
Copy !req
514. You know when it kicks out...
Copy !req
515. When I'm driving a car and it
kicks out like that, I poo myself,
Copy !req
516. This might sound really silly and
think I'm a bit of a know it all, but
Copy !req
517. What, kick the tail out?
Copy !req
518. Because I had to make sure that I could get to turn
two first and one of the only way of doing it is
Copy !req
519. a little bit of oversteer makes the guy a
little nervous that you're getting close,
Copy !req
520. And that is what happened, And the
great thing is he backed out of it,
Copy !req
521. Sorry, I just need to... This is very peculiar,
So you have the World Championship riding on
Copy !req
522. your having to finish the race,
obviously to get the World Championship,
Copy !req
523. And you kick the arse of the car
out, ON PURPOSE,
Copy !req
524. to unnerve whoever he is,
Copy !req
525. Well, it's giving him less room he's
got no room to turn on the inside,
Copy !req
526. Yes but what if you had
cocked it up,
Copy !req
527. You know for me to win the world championship before the
last race was a must,
Copy !req
528. I really wanted to get it done
before so I had to take the risk,
Copy !req
529. Now, obviously we are
looking forward to you versus Lewis,
Copy !req
530. Are you going to
be able to beat him?
Copy !req
531. That's the aim, I
wouldn't be doing it if not,
Copy !req
532. That's going to be, I tell you it's
going to be a fascinating battle,
Copy !req
533. This is a massive buzz for me,
It's so exciting,
Copy !req
534. I've been in F1 for ten years and
having the chance to race
Copy !req
535. alongside Lewis at McLaren, it's
something I'm really excited about,
Copy !req
536. Can we just talk
about your road cars?
Copy !req
537. Have you not got a Veyron? Can I just ask what's the fastest you've driven it?
Copy !req
538. Um, 70 times... Less 10%... 77,
Copy !req
539. I sneaked in one day and unlocked the bars and drove round your
circuit,
Copy !req
540. Was it any good here?
Copy !req
541. It was all right, except for you had... I can't say
what I was going to say, Because I want to sell it,
Copy !req
542. So anyway, obviously you came here
into our Liana,
Copy !req
543. I tell you what,
Copy !req
544. I had to change my driving style here,
Copy !req
545. I think it was the snow, possibly,
Copy !req
546. You say that, you're such a fusspot,
Copy !req
547. No, seriously, listen to this, You've
got to listen to me, I'm a guest,
Copy !req
548. Go on because it would just
be a racing driver excuse,
Copy !req
549. No, it isn't an excuse
but I jumped in
Copy !req
550. and I sat there revving the engine with
the heater on thinking, I'm so nervous,
Copy !req
551. This thing is an amazing bit of
kit,
Copy !req
552. I've learnt so much coming here I'm really
going to take it into the 2010 season,
Copy !req
553. Who would like to see Jenson's lap?
Copy !req
554. There you go, It's
obviously the old Liana,
Copy !req
555. And there it is,
We haven't seen that for ages,
Copy !req
556. It's damp,
Copy !req
557. Think like this is for the
World Championship, come on JB,
Copy !req
558. It's more important than the
Formula One world championship,
Copy !req
559. Look at it, it's greasy,
Copy !req
560. In F1 if it's wet the tyres work,
if it's greasy you just slide,
Copy !req
561. It is interesting, that first turn,
Copy !req
562. Yes, I'm
impressed, no power understeer,
Copy !req
563. A little bit wild, JB, Come on!
Copy !req
564. At least I'm not singing,
Copy !req
565. You're not singing, And Lewis has a different line
in that first corner and he's adamant about it,
Copy !req
566. I tell you what, I'm more scared
driving this than I'm a Formula One car,
Copy !req
567. I was, This bit here is scary,
Copy !req
568. I think they should put this on the F1 calendar,
Copy !req
569. This place rocks,
Copy !req
570. Oh, That was nice and close
to the tyres made the move,
Copy !req
571. Second to last corner
here let's have a look,
Copy !req
572. Yes, that's good,
Copy !req
573. Come-on, got the back out again,
Copy !req
574. There we are,
Copy !req
575. Across the line,
Copy !req
576. I thought that looked
quite good, that,
Copy !req
577. So,
Copy !req
578. So, Here we go, Jenson... Button,
Copy !req
579. You will,
Copy !req
580. No, really, Where do you reckon?
Copy !req
581. It felt good,
Copy !req
582. Very slippery but I could slide
the car through the corners,
Copy !req
583. It was fun, I don't think
I'm quicker than I was before,
Copy !req
584. Because it was dry, how would I be?
Copy !req
585. Well, Lewis was here in exactly the
same car in exactly the same conditions,
Copy !req
586. I'm a better driver than I was then,
Copy !req
587. You did it, he's a 1,44,7,
you did it in 1...
Copy !req
588. 40...
Copy !req
589. 4...
Copy !req
590. 9...
Copy !req
591. But give him a huge one,
Copy !req
592. Wait a minute, I'll
give you the wet,
Copy !req
593. Look at that,
Copy !req
594. Do you know what it was? It was that
showboating in the last two corners,
Copy !req
595. It was fun, though,
That little thing is so fun,
Copy !req
596. It is, You should try the
more powerful Chevrolet Lacetti,
Copy !req
597. Well, they wouldn't let
me have a go in that one,
Copy !req
598. No, because that's the Formula One
car,
Copy !req
599. Anyway ladies and gentlemen, I give
our World Champion, Jenson Button,
Copy !req
600. And actually your face will be
Copy !req
601. back in a minute because what we're going
to do now is pick up our art gallery film,
Copy !req
602. James and I arrived by aeroplane
fresh from the south,
Copy !req
603. Where do Geordies actually come from?
Copy !req
604. Geordies are from the Northeast,
Copy !req
605. Maybe they're all Geordies, Then
there's others, Foggies, aren't there?
Copy !req
606. There's the Foggies and the
Muggies and the monkey hangers,
Copy !req
607. Are they all types of Geordie?
Copy !req
608. Or are they, maybe they're different,
Copy !req
609. They all say why-aye so
they must all be Geordies,
Copy !req
610. As our BMW art car was so valuable, I
decided to drive it to the exhibition myself,
Copy !req
611. What I have here is a 3,5
litre straight six painting,
Copy !req
612. It's art that moves you,
quite literally, moves you,
Copy !req
613. At the Middlesbrough Institute Of
Modern Art, Captain Sense of Direction
Copy !req
614. had decided to make an audio guide to that
would steer visitors around the exhibits,
Copy !req
615. If you turn through almost 180 degrees to your left
or even to your right in fact because it of course
Copy !req
616. makes no difference whatsoever and walk
straight ahead towards the wall and rotating to
Copy !req
617. your right and not quite through 180
degrees but probably about 155,
Copy !req
618. I, meanwhile was on the road, touring the local radio
stations in a bid to drum up some support for our show,
Copy !req
619. This is fantastic,
Copy !req
620. I've got a van,
Copy !req
621. I've got a list of phone
numbers and I've got a mission,
Copy !req
622. I'm a PR agent,
Copy !req
623. And then walking through the white
door we arrive at the upstairs gallery,
Copy !req
624. Actually, that's not right, You need to come out
and turn left or right if you haven't gone through
Copy !req
625. the white door through the
glass door, which you push,
Copy !req
626. You are then in
the upstairs gallery,
Copy !req
627. The first stop on my publicity tour
was Radio Tees,
Copy !req
628. Who cares about the weather
because it's the weekend,
Copy !req
629. Who cares when Top Gear is in town,
Copy !req
630. And Richard flipping Hammond is with
us,
Copy !req
631. Here comes the publicity,
Copy !req
632. Welcome to Teesside, You of course used to work
here many many years ago, why are you here?'
Copy !req
633. Well, it's great to be here,
I did used to work here, apparently,
Copy !req
634. I worked in a lot of radio
stations for not very long,
Copy !req
635. What are you doing!
Copy !req
636. 'So yes I worked here... '
Copy !req
637. And I have fond memories of working here,
Copy !req
638. Nobody's interested in your
bloody memories,
Copy !req
639. Because I started in radio York
in 1989,
Copy !req
640. Oh for crying out loud!
Copy !req
641. For the rest of the interview Hammond
brilliantly publicised... himself,
Copy !req
642. I've just started something up called
Blast Lab, a kids' science show,
Copy !req
643. Oh, for God's sake,
This is ridiculous,
Copy !req
644. To make matters worse
in the gallery May was busy
Copy !req
645. ignoring our instructions to
make the audio guide interesting,
Copy !req
646. As it was codenamed during development,
rejecting the complicated hydragas suspension
Copy !req
647. of its forebear, the Allegro,
in favour of a straightforward
Copy !req
648. steel-sprung chassis with a rear axle derived
from a design already used to great effect,
Copy !req
649. Hello?
Copy !req
650. Yeah, I'm doing it,
Copy !req
651. I've just,
Copy !req
652. Yes, I know it's got to be done by
it 3,30, But I can't do it because
Copy !req
653. people keep ringing me up and
asking me if I've done it yet,
Copy !req
654. As I bore down on Middlesbrough, Hammond's
publicity tour was going from bad to worse,
Copy !req
655. Yes, I did, I started in 1989
at Radio York,
Copy !req
656. 'Yeah, absolutely, I think Total Wipeout
has been a tremendous success... '
Copy !req
657. I'm going to have a heart attack!
Copy !req
658. There's one where people
have to climb a platform and
Copy !req
659. in front of them are four massive red
inflatable balls and they have to...
Copy !req
660. Total Wipeout is just
idiots falling over,
Copy !req
661. Talk about our art exhibition!
Copy !req
662. The good people of Hartlepool,
Copy !req
663. Hammond is in town with his
PR machine,
Copy !req
664. At Mima, the other idiot was
in the gallery of motor-racing,
Copy !req
665. A subject about
which he knows nothing,
Copy !req
666. Some pictures of racing
cars going around corners...
Copy !req
667. Hopefully, these cardboard boxes
won't be here by the time you arrive,
Copy !req
668. There's a man on fire,
Copy !req
669. There's a car going along, erm...
Copy !req
670. And then I had a problem,
Copy !req
671. I was coming round the corner
doing about 27mph
Copy !req
672. and a cow was there,
Copy !req
673. And I just had nowhere
to go because of this...
Copy !req
674. I'd say there was a school bus... well it was
a bus full of children, handicapped children,
Copy !req
675. and I saw some ginger
ones on so I just...
Copy !req
676. I thought, well I'm going to have
to miss that, so I'll put it
Copy !req
677. in the ditch rather than injure
the children,
Copy !req
678. That story didn't wash,
Copy !req
679. Take a deep breath, Sir, Lips around
the tube, constant stream of breath,
Copy !req
680. Keep going, keep going, keep going,
thank you,
Copy !req
681. The good news was, I scored zero,
Copy !req
682. The bad news came when the car
was towed out of the ditch,
Copy !req
683. That's not too...
It is quite bad, Oh, God,
Copy !req
684. And my attempts to mask the damage
with T-Cut just made everything worse,
Copy !req
685. ENGINE REVS
Copy !req
686. This was an important
exhibit for us, this car,
Copy !req
687. I'm casting around in my head for someone to
blame but it's just me, it keeps coming back at me,
Copy !req
688. So, when we met up, I decided
to do the honourable thing,
Copy !req
689. And go on the attack,
Copy !req
690. Did you hear what he did on the...?
Copy !req
691. I've been working my backside off,
Copy !req
692. You have been and done one interview and
you talked about Blast Lab, Total Wipeout...
Copy !req
693. He didn't ask the right questions,
Copy !req
694. I know more about PR than you,
I was on top of it,
Copy !req
695. Listen, none of this detracts
from the fact, and I can read it in
Copy !req
696. your face, that you've been an idiot
and you have ruined the whole event,
Copy !req
697. By the way, Thanks for asking,
Copy !req
698. We don't care,
Copy !req
699. Evidently, No, it has not...
Copy !req
700. As the exhibition was due to open the following
morning, we agreed to stop bickering and get to work,
Copy !req
701. James went off to rouse the troops,
Copy !req
702. And Richard
relaunched his PR campaign,
Copy !req
703. My work is complete,
One mobile billboard,
Copy !req
704. But better still,
just to really give the message,
Copy !req
705. what I've done is actually put one of the exhibits
from the gallery, on the move, lit and everything,
Copy !req
706. so that people can see it, I'll leave
the door open as I am driving around,
Copy !req
707. THAT is PR,
Copy !req
708. I was with Stephen Wiltshire, the artist famous
for creating detailed drawings from memory,
Copy !req
709. So which bit of New York do you think
you're going to put behind the car?
Copy !req
710. I'm going to
put the Brooklyn Bridge,
Copy !req
711. Brooklyn Bridge, OK,
Copy !req
712. Out on the streets, the PR machine
had adopted a more personal approach,
Copy !req
713. People of Middlesbrough,
Copy !req
714. Tomorrow morning is your opportunity to soak
up some art, Madame, in the black tracksuit,
Copy !req
715. Sir, in the white tracksuit
top, you could visit Mima,
Copy !req
716. You, young man, in the grey
black tracksuit trousers,
Copy !req
717. You sir, in the blue tracksuit top,
Copy !req
718. Tomorrow morning, nine o'clock at
Mima,
Copy !req
719. Art is for the masses,
art is for you sir,
Copy !req
720. In the black tracksuit trousers and you
young man in the blue tracksuit trousers,
Copy !req
721. There is a festival of art
available for you,
Copy !req
722. Back at the gallery it was all go,
Each of us had chosen what he
Copy !req
723. thought was the
best-looking car of all time,
Copy !req
724. And Jeremy and I were
busy installing them,
Copy !req
725. Richard had gone for his
own, Series 1 Land Rover,
Copy !req
726. Jeremy for a Ferrari 275 GTS,
Copy !req
727. No, it is absolutely terrific,
Copy !req
728. I bet if you turn the radio on it'll just be
the beginning of The Italian Job, That music,
Copy !req
729. And I'd gone for a
Lamborghini Countach,
Copy !req
730. How long have you talked about the
Lamborghini Countach for on the audio tape?
Copy !req
731. Please tell me it's no
more than two seconds,
Copy !req
732. A few minutes,
Copy !req
733. It's a very important car,
Copy !req
734. So, this idea that...
seriously James...
Copy !req
735. Yes, but you're only thinking in
terms of numbers of people coming
Copy !req
736. Yes, but they have to come to a
gallery and experience some art,
Copy !req
737. OK, what's this James? This is how I want
to see the people of Middlesbrough, OK,
Copy !req
738. On your left, there's a Lamborghini Countach,
that's a Ferrari 275 GTS and there's a Land-Rover,
Copy !req
739. In here,
we've actually got some art,
Copy !req
740. That's the speed
I want them to be doing,
Copy !req
741. If they saunter, if they're standing there,
saying, Oh, look at the wire wheels and the seats...
Copy !req
742. The log jam,
Copy !req
743. There was, however, a more immediate
problem, Oh, hang on a minute,
Copy !req
744. Is it too wide?
Copy !req
745. We cannot not have it,
Copy !req
746. Eventually, the Countach was
bought in on a special giant thing,
Copy !req
747. And with that done,
we went to check on Stephen,
Copy !req
748. So that's four hours, And it's gone from a blank
piece of paper to that James, in four hours,
Copy !req
749. How many times have you been to this place,
Copy !req
750. Twice, in the Brooklyn Heights,
Copy !req
751. So you remember the detail on this bridge, just from
standing here two times?
Copy !req
752. That car is astonishing,
Copy !req
753. Darkness fell but still
Hammond's PR onslaught rumbled on,
Copy !req
754. We've stuffed the Mima
gallery full of things
Copy !req
755. that people want to go and see,
Obviously, it's automotive themed...
Copy !req
756. And long into the night, James and I were
arguing about where the art car should go,
Copy !req
757. So what, you want to position it to draw
people's attention to the bit you crashed?
Copy !req
758. No, I disagree,
Copy !req
759. OK, it needs to be...
Copy !req
760. Leave it like that, Please
go, get on with your next job,
Copy !req
761. I'm very happy, Leave it there,
Copy !req
762. Show day, And amazingly, our
exhibition was looking rather good,
Copy !req
763. We had installed many thought-provoking
pieces including, Stig World,
Copy !req
764. A video installation where visitors get a
glimpse of what goes on inside his helmet,
Copy !req
765. We also had our ground-breaking
masterpiece called, What's Europcar
Copy !req
766. Going To Say About This?
and obviously Our BMW art car,
Copy !req
767. We knew that all of this would bring in the
multitudes and prove that motoring is the way forward
Copy !req
768. for the nation's art galleries, so we went on
to the roof for our first glimpse of the queues,
Copy !req
769. We'll be able to look at
the crowd from over here,
Copy !req
770. Are you ready, steady...
Copy !req
771. It's not that big, is it?
Copy !req
772. It was a disaster,
Copy !req
773. And the news from the outlying
car-parks was even worse,
Copy !req
774. It was like a scene from Omega Man,
Copy !req
775. It's now 10 to 10, As you can see,
we've been open for 15 minutes,
Copy !req
776. And there is just...
Copy !req
777. There, officially now,
the people looking after
Copy !req
778. the exhibits, outnumbering the
number of people looking at it,
Copy !req
779. My carefully-prepared personal
lectures were a complete waste of time,
Copy !req
780. For me, the artist has managed
to avoid any kind of branding,
Copy !req
781. It's just simply pure...
Copy !req
782. To hit our targets we needed 800 visitors
an hour but it just wasn't happening,
Copy !req
783. I am just doing a
rough head count here,
Copy !req
784. It's not a lot,
Copy !req
785. Around 75 people, tops,
Copy !req
786. By midday the numbers had picked up a bit but
instead of following the prescribed route through
Copy !req
787. the gallery, everyone was all over the
place thanks to James' useless audio guide,
Copy !req
788. 'And then walking through the white
door, we arrive at the upstairs gallery,'
Copy !req
789. 'Actually, that's not quite right,'
Copy !req
790. 'Into the next room,
The door of which should be open,'
Copy !req
791. HIGH-PITCHED ALARM BLARES
Copy !req
792. 'Bloody Nora,'
Copy !req
793. 'Yeah, but I can't do it because people keep
ringing me up and asking me if I've done it yet,'
Copy !req
794. 'I can't even turn it off,'
Copy !req
795. Worse still, Hammond had forgotten
to do his homework on the exhibits,
Copy !req
796. That's a Ferrari 275 GTS,
Copy !req
797. As you can see, the lines are...
Copy !req
798. It's lovely,
Copy !req
799. Yes, it is a lovely colour, yes, it is,
Copy !req
800. We called an emergency meeting,
Copy !req
801. OK, right, what are we
doing, what are we doing?
Copy !req
802. Don't skid away, let's just relax,
Copy !req
803. Please...
Copy !req
804. Plainly, Hammond's
PR had been rubbish,
Copy !req
805. So, to bring in the crowds
we needed to find one,
Copy !req
806. And we did,
Copy !req
807. FOOTBALL FANS CHANT
Copy !req
808. At half-time, we would
make a hearts and minds
Copy !req
809. appeal for the Middlesbrough fans
to come to our show after the match,
Copy !req
810. Sadly, though, we put Captain
Geordie in charge of our outfits,
Copy !req
811. BOOING AND WHISTLING
Copy !req
812. Is this not...?
Copy !req
813. Give us a minute,
Copy !req
814. People of the Northeast,
Copy !req
815. We apologise for
that terrible mistake,
Copy !req
816. We are here to ask... Please, we have
an art exhibition at the Mima Gallery,
Copy !req
817. we need your support,
we have Ferraris, Lamborghinis,
Copy !req
818. we have Richard
Hammond's Land Rover,
Copy !req
819. Er, anything else?
No, Oh, there's one thing,
Copy !req
820. Nottingham, You can't come,
Copy !req
821. The away fans responded with
good grace,
Copy !req
822. You fat bastard, you fat bastard
you fat bastard...
Copy !req
823. You fat bastard!
Copy !req
824. Amazingly, though, our plan worked,
Copy !req
825. In you come,
Copy !req
826. If you start shuffling
through that way,
Copy !req
827. Soon the place was packed, which meant
I could finally unveil our centrepiece,
Copy !req
828. Without a doubt, the highlight,
the highlight of the show so far,
Copy !req
829. How much do you have to
hate somebody
Copy !req
830. to sit down with a piece of
cloth and then do that to him?
Copy !req
831. Among the crowd was a learned art scholar who
could see James' sculpture for what it was,
Copy !req
832. Nothing to see, Nothing to see,
Copy !req
833. The crowds, though, meant we had a
new problem with a James' audio guide,
Copy !req
834. Not only was it still getting everybody lost but
as I'd feared it was also extremely long-winded,
Copy !req
835. 'And latterly, to
5,2 litres, an expansion'
Copy !req
836. 'that was accompanied by the
fitment of a new cylinder head... '
Copy !req
837. This meant the visitors weren't
moving through the gallery fast enough,
Copy !req
838. Have you been listening to the audio guide?
How is it?
Copy !req
839. Pretty boring,
Copy !req
840. With bottlenecks springing up everywhere
there was no way we'd get the numbers through,
Copy !req
841. So I was forced to shorten
my personal lectures a bit,
Copy !req
842. Right, everybody, there's only one
interesting thing in here
Copy !req
843. and it's that painting there of the
Bentley, Good, you've seen it, off we go,
Copy !req
844. There we are, that's
a BMW, we've done it,
Copy !req
845. In here's a Formula One car
with some paint on it, lovely,
Copy !req
846. Right, out, Out,
Copy !req
847. Out, you, you, off you go,
Copy !req
848. Does he know?
Copy !req
849. Does a cat know it's a cat?
Copy !req
850. Does a dog know when its old,
Copy !req
851. What does he actually know?
Copy !req
852. What are you doing
with them up there?
Copy !req
853. Well, I'll tell you
exactly what's happening,
Copy !req
854. Everybody's getting into a room where
James May is talking and they're stuck,
Copy !req
855. This called for drastic measures,
Copy !req
856. So
in machine terms he's extremely bright but he's inanimate,
Copy !req
857. Does he have any feelings? Can we transfer
our own feelings on to the crash-test dummy?
Copy !req
858. Sorry,
Copy !req
859. Rodin's Thinker, He's sort of naked,
Copy !req
860. The point of
art is, you have to interact with it, You don't just look at it,
Copy !req
861. What's that stink?
Copy !req
862. Sorry about that, it's
unfortunate, but...
Copy !req
863. OK, if you'd like to move to the exits
now, tremendous, thank you for leaving here,
Copy !req
864. Sorry about the smell, I've
no idea how that happened,
Copy !req
865. Soon the crowds were moving along at a fair old
pace, which meant there wasn't much more we could do,
Copy !req
866. Yep,
Copy !req
867. We've done the best
PR that we can do,
Copy !req
868. Oh yeah,
Copy !req
869. It's now time for us to bail out
and let the numbers roll in,
Copy !req
870. With that, Back to the studio,
Copy !req
871. I finally got to say that,
Copy !req
872. OK,
Copy !req
873. I have the figures here, remember...
Copy !req
874. Remember, we had to beat 30,000,
Copy !req
875. Yes, so...
Copy !req
876. Yes, yes,
Copy !req
877. No, no, 15,
Copy !req
878. 15,000,
Copy !req
879. Oh,
so, a half of what we needed then,
Copy !req
880. Yeah, we were halfway there,
Copy !req
881. But, this is still an all-time
record for the Mima Gallery,
Copy !req
882. Yes, That is brilliant,
Copy !req
883. We sort of did it, We did something,
Copy !req
884. Cars are the future of art,
Copy !req
885. They are and that is a bombshell
and that means we can end,
Copy !req
886. Now, we're back on December 27th with an elongated
special in which we drive across South America,
Copy !req
887. That is quite something,
But until then,
Copy !req
888. Have a very, very happy Christmas,
Take care, Good night,
Copy !req
