to Chicago O'Hare,Copy !req
3. departure gate has changed.Copy !req
4. The flight is now leaving
from Gate C3.Copy !req
5. Weren't you, like, a lot smaller
the last time I saw you?Copy !req
6. You're super delayed,
and I've been standing hereCopy !req
7. for two hours
with this ridiculous sign,Copy !req
8. so shut the fuck up.Copy !req
9. I missed you too.Copy !req
10. I didn't even know
you had a brother.Copy !req
11. What's his name?Copy !req
12. Kaito.Copy !req
13. Eh.Copy !req
14. He is younger than me—
the one who went to school.Copy !req
15. So, smarter.Copy !req
16. Our mother thinks so.Copy !req
17. - What's he like?
- Hmm.Copy !req
18. He looked up to me,
followed me everywhere.Copy !req
19. I used to get angry.Copy !req
20. I would tell him to go away.Copy !req
21. He wants to be like me still—
Chihara-kai.Copy !req
22. I promised our motherCopy !req
23. I wouldn't let him.Copy !req
24. But Hayama
has pulled him close.Copy !req
25. So get him out.Copy !req
26. I have tried.Copy !req
27. - He will not listen.
- Then try again.Copy !req
28. And don't take no
for an answer.Copy !req
29. And what will you do now?Copy !req
30. Take my own advice.Copy !req
31. Get funds to start over.Copy !req
32. Take care
of the girls until then.Copy !req
33. Take care of Erika and Daichi.Copy !req
34. I'll talk to her.Copy !req
35. I must go.Copy !req
36. The ceremony is in a few hours.Copy !req
37. Are you coming back?Copy !req
38. Are you sure you want me
to come back?Copy !req
39. Yeah.Copy !req
40. Good.Copy !req
41. You look different.Copy !req
42. - No shit.
- Better clothes.Copy !req
43. You used to dress
like such a dork.Copy !req
44. So what exactly
do you do all day?Copy !req
45. I've been wondering.Copy !req
46. I chase down stories...Copy !req
47. pound the pavement.Copy !req
48. So you set your own schedule.Copy !req
49. Yeah.
Pretty much.Copy !req
50. Yet somehow you still can't
find the time to call home.Copy !req
51. Okay, okay,
all my bullshit aside...Copy !req
52. are you good?Copy !req
53. Ups and downs.Copy !req
54. A lot of downs.Copy !req
55. Dad had to get past his whole
"I don't believe in depression" thing.Copy !req
56. He doesn't not believe
in depression.Copy !req
57. You don't know.Copy !req
58. You left before it got bad.Copy !req
59. Anyways, I-I started
doing activities.Copy !req
60. Mom and Dad worry less
when I'm active.Copy !req
61. Oh, I'm going to ask you
for a favor, by the way.Copy !req
62. - School paper.
- Uh-oh.Copy !req
63. You come talk
to the journalism club,Copy !req
64. and I ask you stuff like...Copy !req
65. so do you have
a girlfriend in Japan?Copy !req
66. Yes! I knew it!Copy !req
67. You're married with kids,
and you just never told us.Copy !req
68. Not even close.Copy !req
69. Fuck.Copy !req
70. We have a few
follow-up questions.Copy !req
71. We won't take
much of your time.Copy !req
72. Miss Porter, we are just
trying to fill in the blanks.Copy !req
73. - Am I under investigation?
- No.Copy !req
74. But we'll have to ask
that you not leave the cityCopy !req
75. without notifying us.Copy !req
76. Good day, Miss Porter.Copy !req
77. Oof.Copy !req
78. It's going to start the second
I walk in the door, isn't it?Copy !req
79. - Dude, relax.
- Oh.Copy !req
80. Honey!Copy !req
81. - Oh.
- Hey, Mom.Copy !req
82. My baby is home.Copy !req
83. Oh, my God.
Look at you.Copy !req
84. I didn't know if you were
coming after your plansCopy !req
85. - kept changing.
- Oh, I know. I'm sorry.Copy !req
86. Look at this suit.
It's—it's hanging off of you.Copy !req
87. What are you eating out there?Copy !req
88. Tiny slices of raw fish—
that's not food.Copy !req
89. That's bait.Copy !req
90. I'm eating, I'm eating.
I promise.Copy !req
91. Okay. Uh, your father
is in the backyard.Copy !req
92. - Have the drinks arrived?
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
93. Thank you.Copy !req
94. Yeah, they should be put
under the tent.Copy !req
95. The 60-watt bulb
should be fine.Copy !req
96. Careful, old man.Copy !req
97. You don't want to take
a tumble on your big day.Copy !req
98. Hey. Hey.Copy !req
99. You look good.Copy !req
100. Oh, yeah?
That's not what Mom said.Copy !req
101. Well...Copy !req
102. - Can I help with anything?
- Oh, it's, uh, under control.Copy !req
103. You must be tired.
How long was your trip?Copy !req
104. It was long, but, you know,Copy !req
105. I passed over
the international date line,Copy !req
106. so it's kind of like
going back in time.Copy !req
107. If only such a thing
were possible.Copy !req
108. You should go freshen up.Copy !req
109. Yeah.
I guess I will.Copy !req
110. Your father, he's happy.Copy !req
111. Me too.Copy !req
112. I'm going to go upstairs
and take a shower, change.Copy !req
113. - Josh.
- Ma, Jake.Copy !req
114. Uh-huh. It's nice to see you
put your family first.Copy !req
115. Could have been worse.Copy !req
116. Oh, you made it.
Yay!Copy !req
117. Hi. Mwah.Copy !req
118. Come get yourself a drink.Copy !req
119. Third victim
of a hunting accidentCopy !req
120. I've had on my table
this month.Copy !req
121. It is seasonal.Copy !req
122. This time of year,
we get calls all the time.Copy !req
123. So what was the cause
of death this time?Copy !req
124. Rifle shot,
back of the cranium.Copy !req
125. Jake.Copy !req
126. Son, you remember
Paul Luthold from work?Copy !req
127. Sorry.Copy !req
128. Dr. Luthold, good to see you.Copy !req
129. I was Dr. Luthold
when you were Josh.Copy !req
130. It's Paul.
Welcome home.Copy !req
131. You've been missed.Copy !req
132. Let's see how they feel
about me tomorrow.Copy !req
133. And this is Phil Hadley.Copy !req
134. He's with the Boone County
Sheriff's Department.Copy !req
135. Good to know you, Jake.Copy !req
136. They don't have KC barbecue
in Japan, am I right?Copy !req
137. Mmm. Yeah, but no chronic
heart disease either.Copy !req
138. I hear Tokyo is
very different.Copy !req
139. More polite, kind of timid,
would you say?Copy !req
140. Well, tell that
to the Japanese Mob bossCopy !req
141. who got thrown out
his penthouse window last week.Copy !req
142. So, uh, what is it like
in the Far East?Copy !req
143. Well, bananas come
wrapped in plastic,Copy !req
144. and you pay 100 bucks
for a melon.Copy !req
145. - Oh, you're exaggerating.
- Hand to God.Copy !req
146. - Oh.
- And guns—not a thing.Copy !req
147. I work with a detectiveCopy !req
148. who arrested somebody
for owning a bullet.Copy !req
149. - You're kidding.
- Yeah, I hear from your dadCopy !req
150. - you're on the crime beat.
- Yeah, that's right.Copy !req
151. You must see some wild stuff
after the sun goes down.Copy !req
152. Sure.
Maybe not what you're thinking.Copy !req
153. It's less murder and more...Copy !req
154. uh, the floating world.Copy !req
155. - Floating.
- Hmm.Copy !req
156. Sounds poetic.Copy !req
157. Now, imagine clubs for men
who want to be—sorry, Mom—Copy !req
158. - groped by ladies on the subway.
- Oh!Copy !req
159. So the clubs are made
to look like subway cars.Copy !req
160. And you just stand there.Copy !req
161. Ooh!Copy !req
162. - Exactly.
- Sure.Copy !req
163. Hey, do you mind if I join?Copy !req
164. Uh, we haven't met officially.Copy !req
165. Dean Kudisch.Copy !req
166. Wait.Copy !req
167. Uh, senior editor
of the "St. Louis Dispatch"?Copy !req
168. No way!
I grew up on the "Dispatch."Copy !req
169. Well, I'm flattered.Copy !req
170. I fell in love with journalism
because of you.Copy !req
171. I read all of your work
when you were in Srebrenica.Copy !req
172. Well, I've read you too.Copy !req
173. The exposé on the biker thefts
was really strong.Copy !req
174. Wait, how did you get—Copy !req
175. Oh, "Meicho" publishes
an English edition stateside.Copy !req
176. I knew you were Eddie's kid.
I gave it a read.Copy !req
177. - I was impressed.
- Wow. Thanks.Copy !req
178. Thank you.Copy !req
179. Your old man says
you're not here for very long.Copy !req
180. No. Well, Missouri and I
do best in small doses.Copy !req
181. You know, there were
two types of reportersCopy !req
182. when I was in Srebrenica—Copy !req
183. the ones who couldn't wait
to go homeCopy !req
184. and the ones
who could never go home.Copy !req
185. And over time, I got to tell
pretty fast who was who.Copy !req
186. You know how I knew?Copy !req
187. The lifers were funny.Copy !req
188. They were reckless, fearless.Copy !req
189. They were
the life of the party.Copy !req
190. They were creating the men
that they wanted to be,Copy !req
191. and then they started
living as those men.Copy !req
192. And the problem is...Copy !req
193. when you lose track
of who you used to be...Copy !req
194. it's harder to get home.Copy !req
195. Maybe they were
happier being away.Copy !req
196. Maybe.Copy !req
197. Or maybe they just got lost.Copy !req
198. You know, if you're ever
back for good...Copy !req
199. I'm hiring.Copy !req
200. Pleasure, Jake.Copy !req
201. Nice to meet you, Dean.Copy !req
202. Mm.Copy !req
203. - Speech!
- Speech!Copy !req
204. I just, um—Copy !req
205. You got this, Eddie.Copy !req
206. - You should say something.
- I want to thank, um—Copy !req
207. He needs your help.Copy !req
208. Go, go, go, go, go.Copy !req
209. We're here for you, buddy.Copy !req
210. Hey. I'm...Copy !req
211. the son, obviously.Copy !req
212. I wanted to give some remarks.Copy !req
213. So thank you all for coming.Copy !req
214. It means a lot to my family.Copy !req
215. And...Copy !req
216. it means a lot to me.Copy !req
217. But of course, you all came.Copy !req
218. I mean, he's Eddie Adelstein—
the ukulele master himself.Copy !req
219. I've...Copy !req
220. learned a lot from my old man.Copy !req
221. Dragging me
to crime scenes as a kidCopy !req
222. didn't totally mess me up.Copy !req
223. Instead...Copy !req
224. it made me curious.Copy !req
225. My—my dad taught me...Copy !req
226. the value not just
of asking questionsCopy !req
227. but of asking
the right questions.Copy !req
228. And he taught me that it's okay
to care about your workCopy !req
229. with your full heart...Copy !req
230. Especially
if your work's people,Copy !req
231. alive or dead,Copy !req
232. because, you know,
the more peopleCopy !req
233. who care about people,
the better.Copy !req
234. And...Copy !req
235. Eddie Adelstein...Copy !req
236. has a great big heart...Copy !req
237. with room enough for everybody.Copy !req
238. I'm proud to be your son.Copy !req
239. So, from all of us...Copy !req
240. happy birthday, Dad.Copy !req
241. Happy birthday.Copy !req
242. Happy birthday, Eddie.Copy !req
243. We love you.Copy !req
244. We love you, Eddie.Copy !req
245. Hey.
Your sister gone to bed?Copy !req
246. Out like a light.Copy !req
247. Seems like she's doing better.Copy !req
248. A few steps forward,
a few steps back.Copy !req
249. How far back?Copy !req
250. She needed inpatient,Copy !req
251. just for a few weeks.Copy !req
252. We got her back on track.Copy !req
253. And she was doing inpatient,
and nobody told me?Copy !req
254. Would you have flown back?Copy !req
255. Did Jess ask you about her
school presentation yet?Copy !req
256. Yeah, a Q&A in front
of the school newspaper, right?Copy !req
257. It's important to her, Jake.Copy !req
258. It's the first thing she's been
excited about in a while.Copy !req
259. - I'll be there, Dad.
- Good.Copy !req
260. - Happy birthday.
- Thanks.Copy !req
261. Tonight's the most relaxed
I've been in a long time.Copy !req
262. Trouble with work
or with a woman?Copy !req
263. What if it's
the same trouble?Copy !req
264. - Who is she?
- She's...Copy !req
265. In kind of a complicated
situation and wants out.Copy !req
266. Domestic violence?Copy !req
267. This guy is a violent guy.Copy !req
268. I'm not sure if he's violent
toward her, but...Copy !req
269. he could be.Copy !req
270. And you're helping her?Copy !req
271. I'm trying.Copy !req
272. But you have feelings.Copy !req
273. I have feelings.Copy !req
274. You're a good man, Jake.Copy !req
275. You are.Copy !req
276. In a world
of constant uncertainty,Copy !req
277. that's what comforts me.Copy !req
278. I know I raised a good man.Copy !req
279. I hope you'll come
back here someday,Copy !req
280. get married, raise some kids.Copy !req
281. I know that doesn't sound as glamorous
as what you're doing over there,Copy !req
282. but I think you could be happy.Copy !req
283. I am happy over there.Copy !req
284. That's the whole thing, son.Copy !req
285. It's over there.Copy !req
286. And we don't know
because we're not a part of it.Copy !req
287. I'd like to change that.Copy !req
288. Hey. Luna.Copy !req
289. I haven't seen you
since Onyx.Copy !req
290. - God, it's been a while.
- Yeah, you look good.Copy !req
291. - Thanks.
- You're welcome.Copy !req
292. The club
is a complete disaster.Copy !req
293. Cops keep coming by.Copy !req
294. They think I'm
the love-triangle murder queen.Copy !req
295. The insurance company
is dragging its feet.Copy !req
296. There's no fucking money.
It's a fucking nightmare, Lu.Copy !req
297. I'm sorry, Sam.
You've had a rough go.Copy !req
298. - I didn't mean to complain.
- It's okay.Copy !req
299. You're in the shit.
You get to complain.Copy !req
300. Actually, um, I didn't call
you for your sympathy,Copy !req
301. though I appreciate it.Copy !req
302. I'm hoping you can help me.Copy !req
303. If you can find a place
for my girls at Onyx,Copy !req
304. - just for the time being...
- Yeah, I'm sorry. I can't.Copy !req
305. They're
exceptional hostesses.Copy !req
306. They'd do any place proud.Copy !req
307. Just talk to Duke.
It's not for me. It's for them.Copy !req
308. - I'm sorry, okay?
- Why not?Copy !req
309. Because some people
were killed in your club.Copy !req
310. You are the story,
and anyone who's connectedCopy !req
311. to you right now,
they're part of the story too.Copy !req
312. I told you that going in
with the yakuzaCopy !req
313. was not going to end well,Copy !req
314. and I-I just wish
you had stayed at Onyx.Copy !req
315. I don't.
I made something.Copy !req
316. I'm good at it.
I don't want to let this go.Copy !req
317. Hon, I can hear
your mouth watering.Copy !req
318. I've been dreaming
about this food.Copy !req
319. Oh. Oh, you have
$100 cantaloupesCopy !req
320. - and subway-groper clubs...
- Oh, Ma.Copy !req
321. And you can't get a plate of
bacon and eggs for breakfast?Copy !req
322. Mm, not the way
my mama makes them.Copy !req
323. Oh.Copy !req
324. Mm.Copy !req
325. I saw you talking
to Dean last night.Copy !req
326. Yeah, Dean Kudisch was there.Copy !req
327. Yeah.Copy !req
328. Did he offer you a job?Copy !req
329. No.Copy !req
330. I mean, well, sort of...Copy !req
331. in the future.Copy !req
332. The job would be here, obviously.Copy !req
333. Ah.Copy !req
334. Let me guess.
You want me to take it.Copy !req
335. But you're never going to.Copy !req
336. What's that supposed to mean?Copy !req
337. You worked too hard
to get away from here.Copy !req
338. - Ma.
- Yeah.Copy !req
339. I know it's—it's not about us.Copy !req
340. Or mostly I know.Copy !req
341. You did what you had to do.Copy !req
342. Eggs are done.Copy !req
343. Bring your plate, Jake.Copy !req
344. Did you just call me Jake?Copy !req
345. Yeah, you've been gone
so long, I guess, you—Copy !req
346. you grew into a Jake.Copy !req
347. - Hi.
- Hi, there.Copy !req
348. This is MargeCopy !req
349. from Southern Minnesota
Medical Center.Copy !req
350. I'm calling
about an outstanding billCopy !req
351. for Mr. Tanaka's surgery.Copy !req
352. Hello?Copy !req
353. Wrong number.Copy !req
354. And then I want to ask you
about the...Copy !req
355. panty vending machines.Copy !req
356. I mean, as far as
a journalistic question,Copy !req
357. it's kind of a dead end,
you know.Copy !req
358. The answer is that,
yes, they exist.Copy !req
359. - Gross. Okay, so then...
- Don't ask me about that.Copy !req
360. What are you working on now?Copy !req
361. So I've been deep in illegal
motorcycle gang activity.Copy !req
362. So you can ask me about that.Copy !req
363. And...Copy !req
364. About getting too close
to a source.Copy !req
365. Joshua Jake Adelstein,
rule breaker.Copy !req
366. What do you expect?Copy !req
367. Mm, what do you love most
about your job?Copy !req
368. All right.Copy !req
369. I'd say
the unpredictability of it—Copy !req
370. never knowing
what's coming next.Copy !req
371. When I lived here, everything
just seemed so preordained.Copy !req
372. The sameness of it all...Copy !req
373. kind of made me itch.Copy !req
374. What about you?Copy !req
375. - What do you mean?
- I mean... are you happy here?Copy !req
376. Are you going to stay
after high school?Copy !req
377. I-I'm just trying to get
through high school.Copy !req
378. I can't think
farther ahead than that.Copy !req
379. I'll go get it.Copy !req
380. Adelstein residence.Copy !req
381. - Jake.
- Katagiri-san?Copy !req
382. - Can you talk?
- Yeah.Copy !req
383. We found evidence that
Tozawa went to MinneapolisCopy !req
384. for liver surgery.Copy !req
385. He must have bribed someone
or threatened them.Copy !req
386. - Either way, we can use it.
- Yeah.Copy !req
387. Okay.
Let me know what you find out.Copy !req
388. Jake, Minneapolis
is a 90-minute flightCopy !req
389. from St. Louis.Copy !req
390. Who knows what he'll doCopy !req
391. if Tozawa thinks
we have this information?Copy !req
392. You're coming back
for the interview, right?Copy !req
393. Abs—absolutely. I'm gonna be
in Minneapolis one day, max.Copy !req
394. Honey, honey, I just don't—Copy !req
395. I don't know why they couldn't
find someone else to go.Copy !req
396. Because I'm here, Mom.
They're all the way over there.Copy !req
397. - It's a long way.
- Oh.Copy !req
398. - Mm.
- How can I help?Copy !req
399. Help?
Like, with what?Copy !req
400. Like, I know a few guys
at SMMC.Copy !req
401. The head of their neurology
department is an old friend.Copy !req
402. And he would know—Copy !req
403. Who did you say you wanted?
Head of hep?Copy !req
404. Yes, hepatology.Copy !req
405. Well, I could always make
a call.Copy !req
406. I would really
appreciate that, Dad.Copy !req
407. See? Your old man's not
so useless after all, is he?Copy !req
408. If I were a younger man,
I'd go with you.Copy !req
409. Well, hopefully I won't need
a coroner for this one, Dad.Copy !req
410. - See you guys soon.
- Bye. See you tomorrow.Copy !req
411. Be safe.Copy !req
412. So your dad knows Bill, huh?Copy !req
413. Yeah, that's great.Copy !req
414. - Small world.
- Yeah.Copy !req
415. Uh, thank you so much
for taking the timeCopy !req
416. to speak to me
on such short notice.Copy !req
417. Well, I just have
a few minutes,Copy !req
418. but you said
you're writing a piece.Copy !req
419. Yeah, I only need
a few minutes.Copy !req
420. It's for the "Meicho Shimbun"
in Tokyo.Copy !req
421. We're doing a story about how
U.S. innovations in medicineCopy !req
422. make their way to Japan.Copy !req
423. Well, happy to help
however I can.Copy !req
424. Uh, well, to start,
what can you tell meCopy !req
425. - about the transplant wait list?
- Well, it's long.Copy !req
426. We have about 400 folks
on the list right now.Copy !req
427. And that's, uh,
Americans onlyCopy !req
428. or foreign nationals as well?Copy !req
429. We don't treat
foreign nationals here.Copy !req
430. This list is
for Americans only.Copy !req
431. And, uh, what's the average
wait time on a liver?Copy !req
432. Well, for us, it can be
up to five years.Copy !req
433. Well, I hope that helped.Copy !req
434. Sorry to rush,
but I got to get back.Copy !req
435. No. Thank you so much
for your time.Copy !req
436. - Anytime.
- Nice watch.Copy !req
437. Oh. Yeah, thanks.Copy !req
438. Dr. Walker, what percentage
of patients on the listCopy !req
439. die waiting for a liver
that they never get?Copy !req
440. Uh, well, that hovers
around 10%.Copy !req
441. And where did you get
that Vacheron Constantine?Copy !req
442. - I'm sorry.
- The watch.Copy !req
443. It's a Vacheron Constantine, right?Copy !req
444. - They don't make many of those.
- I'm not following.Copy !req
445. Here's the thing—
I would love to write a storyCopy !req
446. about how great you are
and how great SMMC is.Copy !req
447. I'd rather not write a story
about that watchCopy !req
448. and how it was a gift from
a high-level Japanese gangsterCopy !req
449. who flew in,
jumped the waiting list,Copy !req
450. - and went under your knife.
- Listen, I had no ch—Copy !req
451. But if you don't
help me, I will.Copy !req
452. And then you can kiss
your career bye-bye.Copy !req
453. - Katagiri-san.
- Jake.Copy !req
454. Ready for this?Copy !req
455. Tozawa not only got
a liver transplant at SMMC,Copy !req
456. the second a match
became available,Copy !req
457. he was prepped and ready for
surgery the very next morning.Copy !req
458. - Who told you this?
- His surgeon...Copy !req
459. Dr. Walker.Copy !req
460. Patient covered in tats
head to toe,Copy !req
461. barely spoke English.Copy !req
462. There were guards outside
the OR and outside recovery.Copy !req
463. The patient was listed as,
get this, Spencer Tanaka—Copy !req
464. S.T.Copy !req
465. And after the surgery,Copy !req
466. these Japanese guys in suits
give WalkerCopy !req
467. a quarter-million-dollar watchCopy !req
468. and tell him they would
appreciate his discretion.Copy !req
469. The real question is,Copy !req
470. how did Tozawa
manage to skirt a no-fly ban?Copy !req
471. Who did he have to bribe to
pull something like that off?Copy !req
472. There's a story here.Copy !req
473. And many more questions.Copy !req
474. When are you coming
back to Japan?Copy !req
475. I have four days left here.Copy !req
476. Jake, we do not have
four days.Copy !req
477. I do not have four days!Copy !req
478. I can't just up and leave.
My family would kill me.Copy !req
479. Jake, Tozawa
is consolidating power.Copy !req
480. You just found critical
evidence against him!Copy !req
481. I'm sorry to ask...Copy !req
482. but many more people
may die hereCopy !req
483. if we do not see this through.Copy !req
484. Adelstein residence.Copy !req
485. Hey. How's it going there?
You get what you needed?Copy !req
486. Oh, I'm glad. Can't wait
to hear the whole thing.Copy !req
487. You on your way back?Copy !req
488. Where?
What are you doing in Dallas?Copy !req
489. Jake...Copy !req
490. what about—Copy !req
491. You promised Jess.
What's she supposed to—Copy !req
492. She's been waiting for you to—Copy !req
493. This isn't a way to do things.Copy !req
494. What am I supposed
to tell your mother?Copy !req
495. I understand
that you're needed,Copy !req
496. but there will always be
something biggerCopy !req
497. and more urgent
than your familyCopy !req
498. if you let it be.Copy !req
499. Be safe.Copy !req
500. Aah!Copy !req
