Since the arrival of Boco, Gordon is upset when the Fat Controller allows branch line diesels to pull main line trains. Edward suggests that he should run on the branch for a change. Gordon thinks such an idea "vulgar", but little does he know that a run on the branch is quite unexpectedly in store that night...

3. The Fat Controller won't allow heavy engines on them.

4. The way Gordon was talking,

6. “It's not fair," he said.

7. “What isn't fair?” “Branch diesels pulling mainline trains."

8. “I'm sure Boco will let you pull his trucks."

9. Gordon spluttered. "I won't pull Boco's dirty trucks.”

10. “It would be a change.”

11. “The Fat Controller would never approve. Branch lines are vulgar.”

12. Gordon puffed away. Edward chuckled and followed him.

13. The two engines pull two fast trains from the station.

14. Gordon leaves first with an express.

15. Edward follows with a train for the branch line.

16. Usually it runs like clockwork, but there was trouble.

17. A lady in a green hat was saying goodbye to a friend.

18. It was nearly time to start.

19. The fireman saw something green waving.

20. He thought the guard had waved his flag.

21. Gordon started, leaving his passengers on the platform.

22. Everyone was very cross.

23. By the time Gordon was brought back, Edward was late with his train.

24. So now he set off first.

25. The signalman wasn't told about the change.

26. By mistake he sent Edward along the main line.

27. Gordon went along the branch

28. and arrived cold and cross near the harbour.

29. Next day there were no trucks for Bill and Ben. They didn't mind.

30. Teasing Gordon was fun.

31. “What's that?” asked Bill. "Shh. It's Gordon."

32. “It looks like Gordon, but he never comes on branch lines.

33. “He thinks them vulgar.”

34. Gordon pretended not to hear. “If it isn't him, it's a pile of old iron

35. “for the scrap yard."

36. “No, it's useless for scrap. We'll dump it in the sea."

37. Gordon was alarmed. "I am Gordon. Stop.”

38. When Boco arrived, Gordon thought him a beautiful sight.

39. “Boco, my dear engine, save me.”

40. Boco threatened to take away trucks he had for Bill and Ben

41. and so the twins behaved.

42. Gordon thought he was wonderful. “How do you do it?”

43. “Oh, it's just a knack."

44. Gordon believes Boco saved his life,

45. but we know the twins were only teasing.
