The engines are worried that Donald & Douglas might be sent away after their accidents. Edward suggests that they hold a Deputation - and poor Percy gets the task to tell the Fat Controller about it!

1. Snow came early to the island. It was heavy.

2. Engines hate snow. Donald and Douglas were used to it.

3. Back to back with a snowplough on their fronts, they set to work.

4. They puffed backwards and forwards.

5. The snow slipped away, but they found deep drifts.

6. They came to a large drift.

7. They charged it and were backing for another try.

8. - "Donald, it's Henry.

9. “Henry, wait a while. We'll have you out."

10. Henry was grateful, but all was not well.

11. The twins were glum. The Fat Controller was returning.

12. “He'll send us back."

13. “It's a shame," said Percy.

14. “Nonsense about a signal box,” said Gordon.

15. “That spiteful brake van. Good riddance,” said James.

16. “They were splendid in the snow,” said Henry.

17. They agreed something must be done, but what?

18. Percy talked to Edward.

19. “What you need is a deputation,” explained Edward.

20. Percy ran back quickly.

21. “We need a devastation.” “Of course," said Gordon.

22. “What is a desperation?” asked Henry.

23. “We tell the Fat Controller what's wrong.”

24. “Tell the Fat Controller?" asked Duck.

25. There was a long silence.

26. “I propose,” said Gordon, “that Percy be our disputation.”

27. “I can't,” “Rubbish, Percy,” said Henry. "It's easy.”

28. “That's settled.”

29. Poor Percy wished it wasn't.

30. “It's nice to be back.” Percy jumped. "Yes, sir. Please, sir."

31. "What's the matter?”

32. “They've made me a desperation to speak to you, sir."

33. He pondered. “Do you mean a deputation?"

34. “Yes. It's Donald and Douglas.

35. “Send them away and they'll be turned into scrap.

36. “That would be dreadful, sir."

37. “Thank you. That will do."

38. The Fat Controller spoke to the engines.

39. “I had a deputation. I do not approve of interference.”

40. He paused.

41. “Your work in the snow was good. You shall have a coat of paint."

42. The twins were surprised. “Thank you, sir.”

43. "We'll have no more mistakes."

44. “Thank you.” “Does this mean both of us?"

45. The Fat Controller smiled.

46. His speech was drowned in a delighted chorus of whistles.

47. The twins were here to stay.
