The viaduct is being repaired on the Main Line. The Fat Controller doesn't want to close the railway whilst the repairs are being done, and so orders the mainliners to go slowly when crossing it. This delays them with their journey to Thomas, which makes him late to meet with Bertie. Altogether, Thomas becomes very annoyed; until the day comes when he realises that being late isn't such a bad thing after all.

16. His passengers found they were kept waiting till Thomas arrived.

17. Bertie grew cross. “Late again!" he remarked as Thomas panted in.

18. “I thought you could go fast, Thomas.

19. “Time for another race. I could beat you."

20. Thomas let off steam. “Rubbish,” he hissed.

21. “The engines dither about on the viaduct and blame the workmen.

22. “It's an excuse for laziness."

23. One day James was later than ever.

24. “Sorry, Thomas. I was held up and the viaduct made it worse."

25. “Lucky for you I'm a guaranteed connection.”

26. He puffed importantly away.

27. “Come along,” he panted to the coaches,

28. who did their best, but Thomas couldn't save time.

29. Thomas saw Bertie. His radiator was steaming.

30. “What's the matter? You should be at the station."

31. "I feel dreadful,” moaned Bertie.

32. “Driver can't make me better.

33. “Thank goodness you're late. Can you take my passengers?"

34. “Of course.” He felt sorry for Bertie and promised to get help.

35. Thomas set off. He felt more cheerful.

36. Bertie's passengers reached home safely.

37. Bertie came to thank Thomas.

38. “I'm sorry I teased you.”

39. “It's all right. I'm glad I could help.

40. “Being late isn't such a bad thing.”

41. With a last greeting, the friends went back to work.
