Thomas boasts of how his blue paintwork looks splendid. But he doesn't look so splendid when he gets covered in coal dust whilst working at the Coal Hopper! Percy laughs at his friend's accident, but it's not long before he has a mishap with coal too!

2. Thomas's blue paint sparkled

3. as he puffed along his branch line with Annie and Clarabel.

4. He was feeling very pleased with himself.

5. “Hello!” whistled Percy. “You look splendid.”

6. “Yes,” boasted Thomas. “Blue is the proper engine colour.”

7. “I like my brown,” said Toby.

8. “I love being green,” added Percy.

9. “Well,” huffed Thomas, “blue is the only colour for a really useful engine.”

10. Percy said no more. He just grinned at Toby.

11. Later, Thomas was resting when Percy arrived

12. to load his trucks with coal.

13. Thomas was still being cheeky.

14. “Watch out with those silly trucks.”

15. “Go on, go on, go on,” muttered the trucks.

16. “Those buffers don't look safe," said Thomas.

17. The last load poured down. “I'm choking!" cried Thomas.

18. "Get me out!"

19. Percy was worried but he couldn't help laughing.

20. Thomas's smart blue paint was covered in coal dust.

21. “You don't look really useful now, Thomas. You look really disgraceful.”

22. “I'm not disgraceful,” choked Thomas. “You did that on purpose.”

23. It took so long to clean Thomas that he missed his next train.

24. Toby had to take Annie and Clarabel.

25. “Poor Thomas,” whispered Annie to Clarabel. They were upset.

26. Thomas was grumpy that night. Toby thought it a great joke,

27. but Percy was cross with Thomas for thinking he made him dirty on purpose.

28. “Fancy - a really useful blue engine becoming a disgrace.”

29. Next day, Thomas felt better as he watched Percy bringing heavy trucks.

30. Percy was tired.

31. “Have a drink,” said his driver. "You'll feel better.”

32. The water column stood at the end of the siding with the unsafe buffers.

33. Suddenly, Percy found that he couldn't stop.

34. “Oh!" wailed Percy. "Help!"

35. Percy was wheel-deep in coal.

36. It was time for Thomas to leave. He had seen everything.

37. “Now Percy has learned his lesson too,” he chuckled to himself.

38. That night, the two engines made up.

39. “I didn't cause your accident on purpose,” whispered Percy.

40. “I'm sorry I was cheeky,” said Thomas.

41. “Your green paint looks splendid too.

42. “Now we'll both be more careful of coal."
