1. Just a routine background check.Copy !req
2. Now, to the best of your knowledge has
Mr. Wisnowski ever used any illegal drugs?Copy !req
3. Which illegal drugs?Copy !req
4. Yeah, in the time that you worked with...Copy !req
5. Ms. Ermentrout did you find
her to be a trustworthy person?Copy !req
6. Punctual.
Punctual is good.Copy !req
7. No, no, ma'am. This is just
a routine background check.Copy !req
8. Mr... Mr. Garber is not in
any legal trouble whatsoever.Copy !req
9. Yeah.
Okay.Copy !req
10. Thanks for your time.Copy !req
11. Hey, Scully, maybe if we get really lucky
next time they'll let us clean toilet bowls.Copy !req
12. - You ready to quit?
- No. That would make way too many people way too happy.Copy !req
13. Scully.Copy !req
14. I'm on my way.Copy !req
15. I've been called into Kersh's office.
Just me.Copy !req
16. Just you?Copy !req
17. Don't forget your toilet brush.
No. No, ma'am, not you.Copy !req
18. - Agent.
- Sir.Copy !req
19. Dana Scully, this is Agent Peyton Ritter
with the Bureau's New York office.Copy !req
20. - Agent Ritter.
- Hi.Copy !req
21. Show her what you have.Copy !req
22. Uh, well, our office is currently updating its case
filing system. While I was involved in this project;...Copy !req
23. scanning old crime scene photographs
into the computer, I came across this.Copy !req
24. Margareta Stoller, age 57, cause
of death an overdose of Nitraz...Copy !req
25. - Take a look at when they found her.
- A neighbor called the police at 11:14 p.m.Copy !req
26. So what's wrong with that picture?Copy !req
27. The clock says that it's 45 minutes earlier.
Well, a clock can be wrong.Copy !req
28. They certainly can. So, I checked the Post from the
following day. These are straight from their photo files.Copy !req
29. Almost an hour and a half later.Copy !req
30. Two different negatives, same photographer.
The guy's name is Alfred Fellig.Copy !req
31. He's rattled around Manhattan for years. Apparently a
stringer for the wire services and on-call guy for NYPD.Copy !req
32. And you suspect this man Fellig?
You think that Mrs. Stoller wasn't a suicide?Copy !req
33. This guy's into taking pictures, right?Copy !req
34. So I'm thinking, what if... what if
he poisons this woman and...Copy !req
35. gets his jollies by snapping a few of her dead body
then winds up back in the same apartment an hour later,Copy !req
36. after Midtown North calls him over to do the job.Copy !req
37. - That's quite a theory.
- Yeah.Copy !req
38. Well, the thing of it is he might have
done it on more than one occasion.Copy !req
39. Now, I sifted through probably
2,000 of his police photos.Copy !req
40. Now, these three have measurable solar shadows.
And since we know the location in each case...Copy !req
41. - You can tell the time of day by the shadows.
- Right. And with it, these three are looking every bit as hinky.Copy !req
42. You've got another suicide here, a heart attack and a
very obvious murder for which another man was convicted.Copy !req
43. - There's no consistent MO.
- There's no consistent anything.Copy !req
44. I could sure use your help.Copy !req
45. - Agent, would you step outside, please.
- Sure.Copy !req
46. I would say he has a promising career.Copy !req
47. So did you... at one time.Copy !req
48. With your expertise in forensic pathology you
would be a substantial asset to this investigation.Copy !req
49. - I know it would provide more challenge to you than running background checks.
- Agent Mulder and I will begin immediately.Copy !req
50. Agent Mulder's a lost cause.
I'm taking the chance you're not.Copy !req
51. It's you and Ritter.
Do not let me down.Copy !req
52. - Mulder...
- Hmm?Copy !req
53. - What are you doing?
- Being nosy.Copy !req
54. Eating my heart out.
They're sending you on an X-File.Copy !req
55. - It's not an X-File.
- That's not what I'm reading.Copy !req
56. I'm thinking murder by telekinesis.
I'm thinking maybe a shamanistic death touch.Copy !req
57. I'm thinking about the Muslim superstition
that to photograph someone is to steal their soul.Copy !req
58. Thank you.
All very helpful.Copy !req
59. - So they're splitting us up, huh?
- No.Copy !req
60. - No?
- This is a one-time thing.Copy !req
61. Who told you that? Obviously, if you do a good
job they're not going to stick you back here.Copy !req
62. Right?Copy !req
63. Agent Scully we're all set.Copy !req
64. - Peyton Ritter, this is Fox Mulder.
- It's a pleasure to meet you, Fox.Copy !req
65. A pleasure to meet you... Peyton.Copy !req
66. - We should get going.
- Off to New York.Copy !req
67. Alfred Fellig, what can you tell us about him?Copy !req
68. What's to tell? He's one of about 10,000 people in
town who have an official license to piss people off.Copy !req
69. Well, he sometimes doubles as a crime
scene photographer for your precinct.Copy !req
70. Yeah, he comes in, snaps a picture.
Keeps to himself.Copy !req
71. There's not much in the way of
personal information there.Copy !req
72. There's not supposed to be.
It's just a yearly renewal form.Copy !req
73. Would you happen to know when the
original background check was done?Copy !req
74. Here he is again. Yearly renewal dating
back to January, 1970 but still no original.Copy !req
75. I think I've got it. 1964.Copy !req
76. Old-timer.
Anything interesting?Copy !req
77. Maybe.Copy !req
78. - What you doing?
- Take a look at this.Copy !req
79. 1996... '87... '85...'73...Copy !req
80. The guy's a regular Dick Clark.
I don't know what to tell you, Dana.Copy !req
81. Other than the fact that this guy's always
been a geezer, this is looking like a dead end.Copy !req
82. Help!Copy !req
83. Help!
Somebody call the police!Copy !req
84. Man, what do you want from me?
Are you crazy?Copy !req
85. Please! Help me, please!
Come on lady, please! Help me!Copy !req
86. Man, what do you want from
me, man? No! No no no no!Copy !req
87. The prints are Alfred Fellig's.Copy !req
88. Positive match right off his 1964 background check.Copy !req
89. I took the liberty of slipping them into the SAFIS
database. First thing this morning, boom! Up they came.Copy !req
90. You're thinking this was Fellig's work?Copy !req
91. It's a lock. The wound measurements match with
the knife. I'd say he got pretty sloppy in his old age.Copy !req
92. What's this?Copy !req
93. - A whole lot of blood.
- Yeah. I got that.Copy !req
94. - It's pretty clear he took a second victim.
- Where's the second body?Copy !req
95. - They found your boy.
- Fellig? Where?Copy !req
96. - Home watching TV. They're bringing him in now.
- Yes!Copy !req
97. Check. Check. January 4, 11:36 a.m.
15th precinct, Manhattan.Copy !req
98. Agents present: Dana Scully and Peyton Ritter.
Initial interview with...Copy !req
99. Alfred Fellig.Copy !req
100. Hello.Copy !req
101. You're a photographer.Copy !req
102. I've seen, uh... seen some of your work. You, uh...
specialize in some pretty dark subject matter.Copy !req
103. You're, uh... you're around death a lot.
It must... it must fascinate you.Copy !req
104. Am I... boring you, Mr. Fellig?Copy !req
105. Ask me a question already.Copy !req
106. All right.Copy !req
107. I want to know how you always happen to be
Johnny-on-the-spot every time somebody dies.Copy !req
108. You're always there to take the picture.
How does that happen?Copy !req
109. I have a... a nose for news.Copy !req
110. Mr. Fellig your fingerprints were found
on a murder weapon at a crime scene.Copy !req
111. Could you give us a full accounting
of your activities last night?Copy !req
112. The Bronx.
I was on the job.Copy !req
113. Saw some jibone stealing a kid's tennis shoes.
He chased me. Ran off.Copy !req
114. He ran off?Copy !req
115. Some... unidentified murderer.Copy !req
116. - I guess I could identify him.
- Your fingerprints were found on the knife.Copy !req
117. How did they get there?Copy !req
118. He left the knife behind.
I guess I touched it... briefly.Copy !req
119. Why would you do that?Copy !req
120. Were you injured Mr. Fellig?Copy !req
121. You seem to be in pain.
Were you attacked?Copy !req
122. We found other blood at the crime
scene and, when we have it tested...Copy !req
123. I'm wondering if we're going
to learn that it's yours.Copy !req
124. - I got cut some.
- May we see?Copy !req
125. May I help you?Copy !req
126. Hey.Copy !req
127. Hey, take Mr. Fellig to get his blood drawn.Copy !req
128. Photograph his back, too.Copy !req
129. Hey, I'm confused.Copy !req
130. I thought we were trying to bust this
guy not look for reasons to let him go.Copy !req
131. I thought we were looking for the truth.Copy !req
132. Scully.Copy !req
133. Hi. My name is Fox Mulder. We used
to sit next to each other at the FBI.Copy !req
134. - How's your X-File coming?
- Mulder, it's not...Copy !req
135. We haven't made much headway. We arrested
Alfred Fellig and we just released him.Copy !req
136. - You can't hold him? What about the stabbing?
- How do you know about that?Copy !req
137. I told you I'm nosy.
Why are you letting him go?Copy !req
138. Well, we were able to pull
another set of prints off of the knife.Copy !req
139. They belong to a convicted murderer
by the name of Malcolm Wiggins.Copy !req
140. That and the fact that Fellig's blood was found all over
the crime scene tells me that his story checks out.Copy !req
141. At least that particular story, anyway.Copy !req
142. But you still think Fellig's a murderer, huh?Copy !req
143. I don't know what to think.Copy !req
144. He's, uh...Copy !req
145. unusual.Copy !req
146. As in he, uh, plugs up
like a cork when you stab him?Copy !req
147. Mulder, where are you getting this stuff?Copy !req
148. Well, young man Ritter has been
sending progress reports to Kersh.Copy !req
149. My computer may have inadvertently
intercepted a few of those.Copy !req
150. He's got nice things to say
about you, though... mostly.Copy !req
151. Why don't you let me do a little
background check on Fellig for you?Copy !req
152. - Mulder...
- Come on. It's, you know... it's what I do now. I'm getting good at it.Copy !req
153. I'm parked around the block.Copy !req
154. Fellig's asleep. I haven't seen
him move in over four hours.Copy !req
155. Have a lovely evening.Copy !req
156. Mr. Fellig, open up, please!Copy !req
157. Explain this.Copy !req
158. - What?
- You took that photo an hour before police arrived.Copy !req
159. You then purposely covered up that
fact by photographing the scene again.Copy !req
160. I don't think I remember that one.Copy !req
161. You have, Mr. Fellig, a long and uncanny history
of being the first person at the scene of a death.Copy !req
162. You also have a history of
covering up that fact. Why?Copy !req
163. - Am I under arrest again?
- Are you a murderer?Copy !req
164. Well, then explain yourself, sir.Copy !req
165. Because, I promise you until you do,
you will not get a moment's peace.Copy !req
166. You want to take a ride with me?Copy !req
167. You come with me.
I'll show you.Copy !req
168. It's been an hour.Copy !req
169. - Are we going to drive around all night?
- Yeah. This is it.Copy !req
170. This is what I do.
Looking for the shot.Copy !req
171. - What shot?
- The shot.Copy !req
172. Her.Copy !req
173. She's about to die.Copy !req
174. What are you talking about?Copy !req
175. It could happen in the next minute, in the
next hour but it'll happen. It's as plain as day.Copy !req
176. Look, Mr...Copy !req
177. Fellig, I don't know what you're
planning but nobody here is going to die.Copy !req
178. I'm not planning anything.Copy !req
179. I'm just here to tell you
what's going to happen.Copy !req
180. That... that woman right
there is going to be murdered?Copy !req
181. I didn't say "murdered."Copy !req
182. She's a smoker. She might die of lung cancer.
The "how" is always a surprise. I...Copy !req
183. I just always know "when."Copy !req
184. You want me to believe that?Copy !req
185. Get out of my face.
Get off me!Copy !req
186. FBI!
Don't move!Copy !req
187. - Damn, man! Where'd you come from?
- Shut up!Copy !req
188. - Get down! Back up!
- You're not such a big man now!Copy !req
189. That gun ain't mine, Red.Copy !req
190. - You all right?
- I'm out of here.Copy !req
191. Dana, what the hell is going on?Copy !req
192. Assault and possession of an unregistered
handgun. I'll be with you in a minute.Copy !req
193. - Why didn't you call me sooner?
- I apologize.Copy !req
194. What, you blew off the surveillance?Copy !req
195. No offense, but the surveillance
was blown before I got there.Copy !req
196. So, wait, wait... you blew off the surveillance
and what, took a little joyride with him?Copy !req
197. I confronted Fellig. I questioned
him further about his involvement...Copy !req
198. - ... in the deaths that he photographed. Is that okay with you?
- What did he say?Copy !req
199. He said that he can tell
when people are about to die.Copy !req
200. Look, if New York passes a Good Samaritan law
we might be able to nail him on that but...Copy !req
201. other than that, I doubt we're
going to get him for murder.Copy !req
202. Wrong. Let me show you something.Copy !req
203. They picked up Mr. Wiggins last night.Copy !req
204. Now, he says that it was Fellig who killed that kid in
the alley, not him. He said he just happened along and...Copy !req
205. - ... he had to fight for his life.
- A convicted murderer half Fellig's age.Copy !req
206. He said he would have come in on his own but he
said he was afraid we wouldn't have believed him.Copy !req
207. He's right. Tell me, Ritter, did he
have any help concocting that story?Copy !req
208. Look, Fellig is a murderer.Copy !req
209. Whether or not he did this specific one, I don't care,
not if it buys me a few days in the box with him.Copy !req
210. - No judge is going to issue a warrant based on this.
- No, no, no. I know the judge. We'll have it by noon.Copy !req
211. - You know, Kersh warned me about you.
- Uh, he did?Copy !req
212. Yeah... you and your partner. God knows his reputation
precedes him so I guess I should have seen this coming.Copy !req
213. You muck up my case, and Kersh'll
hear about it. Are we clear, Dana?Copy !req
214. Scully.
And we're done with this conversation.Copy !req
215. Yeah?Copy !req
216. Hey, Scully, uh, how's that X-File coming?
And before you tell me that it's not an X-File...Copy !req
217. It is.Copy !req
218. - What happened?
- Alfred Fellig seems to know an awful lot about death.Copy !req
219. Oh, yeah? Well, that's not surprising,
given that he's reached the ripe old age of 149.Copy !req
220. - Excuse me?
- I did a little low-tech background check on him.Copy !req
221. This stuff is so old that they don't even keep
it on record on the computer but Alfred Fellig...Copy !req
222. doesn't exist before 1964
but one Henry Strand does.Copy !req
223. He applied for a press pass from
the Jersey City police in 1939...Copy !req
224. at the age of 53.
His prints match Fellig's.Copy !req
225. But Mulder, that must
be some kind of a mistake.Copy !req
226. You think? Because this Henry Strand
does not exist before 1939.Copy !req
227. However, one L.H. Rice is on record as having
sat for the New York State civil service exam.Copy !req
228. Now, the records don't show whether he
passed or not but his thumbprint? Fellig's.Copy !req
229. Want to know what L.H. Rice's birthday is?Copy !req
230. April 4, 1849. I'm not good at math, but I'm
figuring that's a whole lot of candles on the cake.Copy !req
231. I have spent time with this man and-and
he can't be more than 65 years old.Copy !req
232. I-I think that's what he wants you to think.Copy !req
233. Now we're talking about a guy for whom the phrase
"life in prison" carries some seriously weighty connotations.Copy !req
234. I think you should get to him before
he vanishes and becomes someone else.Copy !req
235. You are going to be arrested,
Mr. Fellig, in two hours,Copy !req
236. charged with murder, and this time
you won't be able to just change your name.Copy !req
237. I showed you what I do last night.
I just take the pictures.Copy !req
238. What you showed me was a contemptible
lack of compassion for another human being.Copy !req
239. You showed me that you
profit of people's deaths.Copy !req
240. Now, why shouldn't you go to prison?Copy !req
241. What, do you want me to cry for them?Copy !req
242. You want me to make like I feel sorry for them?Copy !req
243. I don't.Copy !req
244. Lucky bastards.Copy !req
245. - Every one of them.
- "Lucky"?Copy !req
246. I'm just there to get the shot.
I don't take those people. He does.Copy !req
247. Who's he?Copy !req
248. That's him.
He's the one who takes them.Copy !req
249. You're saying that this is
a photograph of Death itself?Copy !req
250. It's a glimpse, just a glimpse.Copy !req
251. It's closer than I've gotten in... well,
I-I can't even count the years.Copy !req
252. And this is the shot that you spoke of... this is...Copy !req
253. what you try and get?Copy !req
254. Mr. Fellig, I know... that you know
more about photography than I do...Copy !req
255. but this is just a lens flare.Copy !req
256. You're right. I do know more
about photography than you do.Copy !req
257. Okay, I mean... mmm...Copy !req
258. For the sake of argument...Copy !req
259. Why bother? I mean, why... why
take a picture of Death?Copy !req
260. So I can look into his face.Copy !req
261. So I can die.Copy !req
262. Pills don't work.Copy !req
263. Razors... gas... bridges...
I can't tell you how many...Copy !req
264. bridges I've jumped off of.
All I get is wet.Copy !req
265. I got left behind. I don't
want to be here anymore.Copy !req
266. I can't even remember a time when I did.Copy !req
267. And... this...Copy !req
268. This is all I know... to do.Copy !req
269. - You know I don't believe you.
- Yes, you do.Copy !req
270. That's why you're here.Copy !req
271. How is it you know when
people are about to die?Copy !req
272. Oh... You chase it long enough you pick it up.Copy !req
273. Louis Brady Photogrph. 1928.Copy !req
274. Excuse me.Copy !req
275. Mulder.Copy !req
276. - Mulder, it's me.
- Hi.Copy !req
277. Those other two names that you said
that Fellig went by... Strand and Rice...?Copy !req
278. - Yeah. Henry Strand and L.H. Rice.
- What about Louis Brady?Copy !req
279. Uh, no, but there's a... there's,
like, a big gap before 1939.Copy !req
280. Will you check it out for me?Copy !req
281. I'm sticking here to
make sure he doesn't bolt.Copy !req
282. Louis Brady, Mulder.
Tell me what you find out.Copy !req
283. Mr. Fellig?Copy !req
284. Oops. Excuse me.
I have some film out.Copy !req
285. Hold on a second.Copy !req
286. Ritter.Copy !req
287. Agent Ritter, it's Agent Mulder.
Is Agent Scully there with you?Copy !req
288. - No, she's not. Nobody seems to able to find her.
- Me neither, and D.C. Cellular says her phone is turned off.Copy !req
289. - What can I do for you, Agent?
- Well, you can find her for me.Copy !req
290. Listen, Agent Mulder, I'm on
my way to arrest Alfred Fellig.Copy !req
291. Good, because that's where I think she is.
And you were right, Fellig is a murderer.Copy !req
292. Under the name of Louis Brady, he suffocated
two patients in a Connecticut hospital.Copy !req
293. He says he meant to catch up with death.Copy !req
294. One year into his prison sentence he walked off a work
detail. The manhunt never officially ceased.Copy !req
295. - When was this?
- 1929.Copy !req
296. - Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa... when?
- Look, Ritter, don't sweat the math. It's him.Copy !req
297. - Just get there and find Agent Scully.
- All right. I'm on it.Copy !req
298. You know, most people want to live forever.Copy !req
299. Most people are idiots.Copy !req
300. - Which is one of the reasons I don't.
- I think you're wrong.Copy !req
301. How can you have too much life?Copy !req
302. There's too much to learn, to experience.Copy !req
303. 75 years... is enough.Copy !req
304. Take my word for it.Copy !req
305. You live forever, sooner or later you
start to think about the big thing...Copy !req
306. you're missing and that everybody
else gets to find out about but you.Copy !req
307. - What about love?
- What, does that last forever?Copy !req
308. 40 years ago I drove down to the city hall,Copy !req
309. down to the hall of records...
record archives, whatever they call it.Copy !req
310. I wanted to look up my wife. It...Copy !req
311. bothered me I couldn't remember her name.Copy !req
312. Love lasts...Copy !req
313. 75 years, if you're lucky.Copy !req
314. You don't want to be around when it's gone.Copy !req
315. Count your blessings.Copy !req
316. Why are you this way?Copy !req
317. I mean, if this is true... give me
something in the way of proof.Copy !req
318. Help me find some science
that I can hang this on.Copy !req
319. It has nothing to do with science.Copy !req
320. - Someone took my place.
- Took your place?Copy !req
321. I don't know her name.Copy !req
322. I don't think I ever knew it.Copy !req
323. I had yellow fever way the hell back
then when it killed half of New York.Copy !req
324. Washington Square Park was a
common grave they had so many bodies.Copy !req
325. They'd bury them shallow.Copy !req
326. They wrapped them in-in yellow sheets and
the yellow sheets would stick up through the mud.Copy !req
327. I was in a city-run contagion ward. I was out of my
head with fever... out of my mind. And I saw him...Copy !req
328. saw Death. Wish I had a camera then.Copy !req
329. At first, I... just saw him
out of the corner of my eye.Copy !req
330. Then he got bolder and he started
flitting around the room and he'd...Copy !req
331. take this person and he'd take that person and...Copy !req
332. I never saw his face. I didn't want to see his face.
