141. What I can't
tell you...Copy !req
142. is why.Copy !req
143. You said in your reportCopy !req
144. that Skur was suspected
of being a Communist?Copy !req
145. Well, that's
what they said he was.Copy !req
146. That's what they said
they all were.Copy !req
147. That's what they said
they all were.Copy !req
148. To us, Skur was just
another name on a list—Copy !req
149. another Communist spy
at the State Department.Copy !req
150. We had no idea who—Copy !req
151. or what—
Edward Skur really was.Copy !req

164. failure to appear
before the committee.Copy !req
165. I'm a family man,
for God's sake!Copy !req
166. Well, you should have

188. Mr. Dales?Copy !req
189. Mr. Dales?Copy !req
190. For you.Copy !req
191. Yeah?Copy !req
192. You try to reach me?Copy !req

194. I thought maybe
you heard about Skur.Copy !req
195. What about him?Copy !req
196. He's dead.Copy !req
197. He hung himself in his cell.Copy !req
198. Guards found him
about 20 minutes ago.Copy !req
199. What do you figure,

200. tells these mopes

201. in the event of capture?Copy !req
202. I got to go.Copy !req
203. Hmm.Copy !req
204. Hmm.Copy !req
205. Everything okay?Copy !req
206. Oh, nothing
a little bourbon won't cure.Copy !req
207. I didn't know
what I should say to her.Copy !req
208. "I'm sorry about your loss,
Mrs. Skur.Copy !req
209. If there's anything
I can do..."Copy !req
210. Ah, the words sounded hollow.Copy !req
211. No matter what I said,
I was the manCopy !req
212. No matter what I said,
I was the manCopy !req
213. who'd busted her husband—Copy !req
214. turned her life upside down.Copy !req
215. I sat there for over an hourCopy !req
216. trying to find my courage
in a bottle.Copy !req
217. And then... and then I sawCopy !req
218. someone I shouldn't...
I-I couldn't have seen.Copy !req
219. Now it was my life that
would be turned upside down.Copy !req
220. Now it was my life that
would be turned upside down.Copy !req
221. Edward Skur!Copy !req
222. Hey!Copy !req
223. Who's down there?Copy !req
224. Dateline, Washington—Copy !req
225. the Justice Department vows
no mercy for A-bomb spies.Copy !req
226. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg

227. to delay their date

228. Prosecutors say
they are confidentCopy !req
229. Judge Kaufman's death sentence
will be upheldCopy !req
230. by the highest court
in the land.Copy !req
231. The world still seemed
clear to me that morning,Copy !req
232. despite what I'd seen
the night before.Copy !req
233. I still thought I knewCopy !req
234. who the bad guys
and the good guys were.Copy !req
235. who the bad guys
and the good guys were.Copy !req
236. But that was all
about to change.Copy !req
237. (softly):
Hang up.Copy !req
238. Let me call you back.Copy !req
239. What did
the watch commander say?Copy !req
240. Oh, they're still goingCopy !req
241. door-to-door
in the neighborhood.Copy !req
242. There's no sign of him yet.Copy !req
243. They're not going to
find him, Artie.Copy !req
244. Open it up.Copy !req
245. Skur?Copy !req
246. Maybe you want to change
your descriptionCopy !req
247. of the suspect
who assaulted you.Copy !req
248. When were these taken?Copy !req
249. Last night—Copy !req
250. two hours before you say
Skur attacked you.Copy !req
251. You had a few.Copy !req
252. You were feeling bad
about what happened.Copy !req
253. It's understandable.Copy !req
254. I... I didn't have
that much to drink.Copy !req
255. I... I didn't have
that much to drink.Copy !req
256. Just leave Skur's name
out of your report.Copy !req
257. Nobody else
has to know.Copy !req
258. I already filed my report.Copy !req
259. An hour ago.Copy !req
260. Dales.Copy !req
261. Call for you.Copy !req
262. Yes.Copy !req
263. I'll be right there.Copy !req
264. It's the Justice Department.Copy !req
265. It's the Justice Department.Copy !req
266. They want to talk to me.Copy !req
267. Good.Copy !req
268. Good.Copy !req
269. Agent Dales, have a seat.Copy !req
270. You know who I am?Copy !req
271. You prosecuted the Rosenbergs.Copy !req
272. Now you're working
with Mr. HooverCopy !req
273. and, uh, Senator McCarthy.Copy !req
274. Then you know how important
my work is—Copy !req
275. how vital it is
to the future of this countryCopy !req
276. that these rats...Copy !req
277. that these rats...Copy !req
278. these vermin who dare
call themselves AmericansCopy !req
279. be exposed as the traitors
they are.Copy !req
280. I don't interest myself
in politics, Mr. Cohn.Copy !req
281. Everything is political,
Agent Dales.Copy !req
282. Like this report
you filed this morning.Copy !req
283. We've spoken to Mrs. Skur
and the neighbors.Copy !req
284. You seem to be
the only personCopy !req
285. You seem to be
the only personCopy !req
286. who can identify that man
as Edward Skur.Copy !req
287. Do you believe me, then?Copy !req
288. We are fighting a powerful enemy
in a war of ideology.Copy !req
289. In any war, there are secrets—Copy !req
290. truths that must be kept
from the publicCopy !req
291. in order to serve
the greater good.Copy !req
292. You want me to amend my report?Copy !req
293. Take out any reference
to Edward Skur?Copy !req
294. Take out any reference
to Edward Skur?Copy !req
295. I don't understand...Copy !req
296. You're not supposed
to understand.Copy !req
297. You're supposed
to follow orders.Copy !req
298. Agent Dales?Copy !req
299. Yeah.Copy !req
300. Yeah.Copy !req
301. I pulled that file.Copy !req
302. Oh, right. Thank you.Copy !req
303. Dales.Copy !req
304. I'd never so much
as faked an expense reportCopy !req
305. or used a Bureau car
to drive home,Copy !req
306. so lying didn't sit well
with me,Copy !req
307. even if I was under orders.Copy !req
308. even if I was under orders.Copy !req
309. I wanted to leave behind
the business of Edward SkurCopy !req
310. and never hear that name again.Copy !req
311. But it was too late.Copy !req
312. By then, Skur had already
become a murderer.Copy !req
313. Homicide call came in
from Chevy Chase PD.Copy !req
314. Advise and assist.Copy !req
315. Well, where are they?Copy !req
316. Must have come
and gone.Copy !req
317. I know this song.Copy !req
318. They were playing it the day
my unit rolled into Berlin.Copy !req
319. The guy must be a Kraut.Copy !req
320. Yeah. Well-connected Kraut.Copy !req
321. Hmm. There you go.Copy !req
322. I got six ounces of
German shrapnel in my can,Copy !req
323. and this Kraut got to shake
hands with the president?Copy !req
324. What's that?Copy !req
325. You smell that?Copy !req
326. Yeah. Kinda.Copy !req
327. Hospital smell.Copy !req
328. Formaldehyde, maybe?Copy !req
329. Well-connected dead Kraut.Copy !req
330. What the hell happened to him?Copy !req
331. Hands in the air!Copy !req
332. Over there!
Over there!Copy !req
333. Come on! Now!Copy !req
334. Whoa, fellas, FBI, FBI.Copy !req
335. Credentials in my front
coat pocket.Copy !req
336. Hey, easy on
the material.Copy !req
337. I'm Agent Michel.Copy !req
338. This is my partner,
Agent Dales.Copy !req
339. Who called
you guys out here?Copy !req
340. You did, you mope.Copy !req
341. You did, you mope.Copy !req
342. We got the call
from your department.Copy !req
343. We don't know
nothing about that.Copy !req
344. Then who brought
you guys out here?Copy !req
345. One of his nurses called in.Copy !req
346. Said the doc didn't show up
for surgery this morning.Copy !req
347. Well, something tells meCopy !req
348. he ain't going
to make it.Copy !req
349. I was summoned to the bar
by a manCopy !req
350. who'd already been to the
doctor's house that morning.Copy !req
351. It was the man, Agent Mulder,Copy !req
352. you came here to ask me about.Copy !req
353. Skur?Copy !req
354. No.Copy !req
355. But I came here
to warn you about him.Copy !req
356. But I came here
to warn you about him.Copy !req
357. Like you warned that doctor
you murdered in Chevy Chase?Copy !req
358. I tried to save that man,
but I was too late.Copy !req
359. Skur killed him?Copy !req
360. He'll kill you, too.Copy !req
361. Myrtle?Copy !req
362. What are you talking
about? What is this,Copy !req
363. some kind of
Communist plot?Copy !req
364. Skur's not a Communist.Copy !req
365. He's a patriot.Copy !req
366. All of these men are patriots.Copy !req
367. What are you talking
about? What men?Copy !req
368. There were three men—
veterans—Copy !req
369. working at the State Department.Copy !req
370. Skur, Gissing and Oberman.Copy !req
371. Gissing and Oberman.Copy !req
372. I read those names
on a censored report.Copy !req
373. And they're dead now.Copy !req
374. Murdered?Copy !req
375. No.Copy !req
376. No.Copy !req
377. Dead by their own hand.Copy !req
378. They couldn't live
with what they'd become—Copy !req
379. what they'd been
turned into.Copy !req
380. And Skur's the last.Copy !req
381. Why did they put out that story
about him hanging himself?Copy !req
382. Because they had to do somethingCopy !req
383. to cover up
what they'd done to him.Copy !req
384. Label him a Communist—Copy !req
385. say he killed himself
and put him up someplaceCopy !req
386. where no one's even
going to look for him.Copy !req
387. But his escape
threatens everything.Copy !req
388. Threatens what?Copy !req
389. What did they do to him?Copy !req
390. What did they do to him?Copy !req
391. Look... you asked me here.Copy !req
392. And I risked my career
and my family by coming here.Copy !req
393. But the crimes
these men have committedCopy !req
394. against innocent people...Copy !req
395. I can't have that
on my conscience anymore.Copy !req
396. Someone needs to know the truth.Copy !req
397. Who are you?Copy !req
398. My name is Mulder.Copy !req
399. My name is Mulder.Copy !req
400. I work at the State Department.Copy !req
401. Attaboy, tail gunner.Copy !req
402. Give 'em hell.Copy !req
403. Ah, Myrtle.Copy !req
404. Geez Louise.Copy !req
405. Dumb cat.Copy !req
406. (sighs):
Oh.Copy !req
407. Damn it!Copy !req
408. Damn it, Myrtle!Copy !req
409. All right, then, Mr. Mulder.Copy !req
410. Who is this "they"
you want me to arrest?Copy !req
411. You can't arrest these men.Copy !req
412. Why not?Copy !req
413. It's... political.Copy !req
414. What are you telling me?Copy !req
415. Are you telling me that Mr. CohnCopy !req
416. and Senator McCarthy
are involved in this?Copy !req
417. Is Skur after them, too?Copy !req
418. Is Skur after them, too?Copy !req
419. Skur wants vengeance
for what they did to him.Copy !req
420. He's a killer now.Copy !req
421. He can only guess at the
dimensions of this conspiracy.Copy !req
422. But he thinks you're part of it.Copy !req
423. You and your partner.Copy !req
424. Phone.Copy !req
425. What's the number?Copy !req
426. What's the number?Copy !req
427. Klondike 5-0133.Copy !req
428. I knew I should've got a dog.Copy !req
429. Aw, come on.Copy !req
430. Come on.Copy !req
431. Are you, um...Copy !req
432. are you sure
a man did this?Copy !req
433. Uh, I suppose, um,
he could have force-fed himCopy !req
434. a... corrosive agent
of some kind, an acid maybe.Copy !req
435. Except, I-I don't knowCopy !req
436. why it wouldn't have, uh,
burned to the skin.Copy !req
437. That account for the smell?Copy !req
438. Yeah, maybe.Copy !req
439. Uh, we won't know for sureCopy !req
440. till we get a toxology report.Copy !req
441. Hopefully,
we'll have an answer for youCopy !req
442. in six to eight weeks.Copy !req
443. Meanwhile, we can, uh,Copy !req
444. Meanwhile, we can, uh,Copy !req
445. at least start
on a physical examCopy !req
446. of the body...
such as it is.Copy !req
447. Agent Dales.Copy !req
448. Hey, hey, where do you think
you're taking that?Copy !req
449. This man's a veteran;
the body goes to Bethesda.Copy !req
450. Howard, take care of this.Copy !req
451. Mr. Cohn, these men are going
to the county morgue.Copy !req
452. An autopsy needs
to be performed.Copy !req
453. Come here.Copy !req
454. Give us a minute.Copy !req
455. Let's go.Copy !req
456. You want to test me—Copy !req
457. see how fast I can
pull the chain and flush you.Copy !req
458. You want to see your name
on a list?Copy !req
459. Are you nowCopy !req
460. or have you ever been?Copy !req
461. What the hell
are you talking about?Copy !req
462. I'm no Communist.Copy !req
463. You are if I say you are.Copy !req
464. This is a matter
of national security.Copy !req
465. Take this body out
of here. Get it out.Copy !req
466. See?Copy !req
467. You're a patriot again.Copy !req
468. When your partner dies,
a piece of you dies with him.Copy !req
469. I'd been threatened
by Mr. Cohn,Copy !req
470. but I couldn't
leave it alone—Copy !req
471. not while Michel's killer
was still out there,Copy !req
472. not if I wanted
to live with myself.Copy !req
473. I knew Skur had killed Michel
out of vengeanceCopy !req
474. for what had been done
to him—Copy !req
475. your father told me as much—Copy !req
476. but your father also said
that there were two other menCopy !req
477. but your father also said
that there were two other menCopy !req
478. who'd had the same thing
done to them—Copy !req
479. men who were already dead.Copy !req
480. Finding out what happened
to themCopy !req
481. at least
might help me understandCopy !req
482. what Skur had become...Copy !req
483. understand how
my partner was killed.Copy !req
484. What is this?Copy !req
485. The deposition
that names Edward SkurCopy !req
486. and these other two men
as Communists.Copy !req
487. It's all censored.
By the committee.Copy !req
488. To protect the identity
of the witness.Copy !req
489. There was no witness.Copy !req
490. This whole thing's
been manufactured.Copy !req
491. This whole thing's
been manufactured.Copy !req
492. Edward Skur is no Communist.Copy !req
493. Neither are these other two men,
Gissing and Oberman.Copy !req
494. I want to see their files,
Gissing and Oberman.Copy !req
495. I already checked.Copy !req
496. They're missing.Copy !req
497. But I recognize
one of these names.Copy !req
498. It's in an X File.Copy !req
499. An "X File"?Copy !req
500. Yes, unsolved cases.Copy !req
501. I file them under "X."Copy !req
502. Why don't you file them
under "U" for unsolved?Copy !req
503. That's what I did
until I ran out of room.Copy !req
504. Plenty of room in the Xs.Copy !req
505. Who decides
when a case gets an "X"?Copy !req
506. Who decides
when a case gets an "X"?Copy !req
507. The director's office.Copy !req
508. It's, uh... it's
kind of a dead end.Copy !req
509. No one's supposed
to see them,Copy !req
510. but... makes for
interesting reading.Copy !req
511. Here it is.Copy !req
512. A German émigré,
Dr. Strohman,Copy !req
513. patriated here
after the war.Copy !req
514. He was found dead in his office
last week at the V.A.Copy !req
515. Let me guess.Copy !req
516. They weren't able
to explain how.Copy !req
517. His body justCopy !req
518. kind of collapsed,
right?Copy !req
519. Yes.Copy !req
520. Gissing? His name's
in this file somewhere?Copy !req
521. Gissing? His name's
in this file somewhere?Copy !req
522. Yes. He was a patient.Copy !req
523. Found dead on the scene.
Suicide.Copy !req
524. I guess he didn't much care
for his treatment.Copy !req
525. They think he killed his doctor
and then killed himself?Copy !req
526. How did Gissing
kill this man?Copy !req
527. That's why it's an X File.Copy !req
528. They don't know.Copy !req
529. You're lucky
Gissing's body's still here.Copy !req
530. The V.A.'s been trying
to have it transferred.Copy !req
531. Why haven't they?Copy !req
532. Well, this fella's a bigwig
in the State Department.Copy !req
533. Well, this fella's a bigwig
in the State Department.Copy !req
534. His family's been
kicking up a stink.Copy !req
535. What is this?Copy !req
536. Well, looks like he had
some surgery.Copy !req
537. Judging by the colorCopy !req
538. of the scar,
I'd say it was fairly recent.Copy !req
539. I want you
to cut this man open.Copy !req
540. No, I-I can't do that.Copy !req
541. His family will have my head.Copy !req
542. Gissing and a man
named SkurCopy !req
543. were patients
of the same doctors.Copy !req
544. I think whatever was done
to this manCopy !req
545. was also done to the man
who killed my partner.Copy !req
546. was also done to the man
who killed my partner.Copy !req
547. It may be the only way we have
to explain how he died.Copy !req
548. What's that?Copy !req
549. What is that?
I don't know.Copy !req
550. It, uh... looks like it's lodged
into his esophagus.Copy !req
551. Wait a minute.Copy !req
552. Those are sutures.Copy !req
553. Those are sutures.Copy !req
554. Whatever this is,
someone put it there.Copy !req
555. Oh, geez.Copy !req
556. Whoa.Copy !req
557. Oh...Copy !req
558. Oh, my God.Copy !req
559. Mrs. Skur, I hope
I'm not disturbing you.Copy !req
560. You have a lot of
nerve coming here.Copy !req
561. Your husband...Copy !req
562. Your husband...Copy !req
563. You know he's not dead.Copy !req
564. How dare you?Copy !req
565. Your husband
was discreditedCopy !req
566. in order to cover up
a crime, Mrs. Skur—Copy !req
567. a crime that was committed
upon him, against his will.Copy !req
568. Whatever was done
to my husband,Copy !req
569. you're part of it.
According to V.A. records,Copy !req
570. your husband underwent surgery
for war injuries.Copy !req
571. So did two other men
that he worked withCopy !req
572. at the State Department.Copy !req
573. But the surgeries
that they received...Copy !req
574. It wasn't
what they thought it was.Copy !req
575. It had nothing to do
with their war injuries.Copy !req
576. Then what was it?Copy !req
577. Then what was it?Copy !req
578. It's called xenotransplantation.Copy !req
579. It's, uh, the grafting
of another speciesCopy !req
580. into the human body.Copy !req
581. It's a procedure
that Nazi doctorsCopy !req
582. experimented with
during the war,Copy !req
583. and I believe that they
continued their work here,Copy !req
584. using your husbandCopy !req
585. and these other two men
as unwitting test subjects.Copy !req
586. I want to expose what was doneCopy !req
587. to your husband,
Mrs. Skur.Copy !req
588. I can't do that
unless I have his help.Copy !req
589. Get in.Copy !req
590. Just get in.Copy !req
591. Just get in.Copy !req
592. Ed?Copy !req
593. Oh, God.Copy !req
594. Are you all right?Copy !req
595. I told you
not to come down here.Copy !req
596. That FBI agent came back.Copy !req
597. I'm getting worse.Copy !req
598. He says he wants to help you.Copy !req
599. He says he wants to help you.Copy !req
600. It's too late to help me.Copy !req
601. No.Copy !req
602. I can't help myself anymore.Copy !req
603. You sit there.Copy !req
604. Leave us alone.Copy !req
605. Mr. Director,Copy !req
606. leave us.Copy !req
607. In 1945, at the time
of the first conferenceCopy !req
608. to map out the peace
after the second World War,Copy !req
609. there lived within
the Soviet orbitCopy !req
610. 180 million people.Copy !req
611. Lined up on the antitotalitarian
side at that timeCopy !req
612. were one billion,
625 million people.Copy !req
613. Today, Mr. Dales,
just seven years later,Copy !req
614. Today, Mr. Dales,
just seven years later,Copy !req
615. there are
800 million peopleCopy !req
616. under the absolute
domination of Soviet Russia—Copy !req
617. an increase
of over 400%.Copy !req
618. On our side,Copy !req
619. the figure has shrunk
to around 500 million.Copy !req
620. In other words...Copy !req
621. in less than seven years,Copy !req
622. the odds have changed
from nine to one in our favorCopy !req
623. the odds have changed
from nine to one in our favorCopy !req
624. to eight to five
against us.Copy !req
625. The threat of global Communist
domination is a realityCopy !req
626. that can be ignored only at the
risk of our own annihilation.Copy !req
627. The men we arrested
weren't Communists.Copy !req
628. If we are to defeat the enemy,
we must use their tools.Copy !req
629. We must go further.Copy !req
630. We must do those thingsCopy !req
631. which even our enemies
would be ashamed to do.Copy !req
632. which even our enemies
would be ashamed to do.Copy !req
633. It is only through strengthCopy !req
634. that we can make
our enemies fear usCopy !req
635. and thereby ensure
our own survival.Copy !req
636. You have one chance,
Mr. Dales, to save yourself—Copy !req
637. to demonstrate
that you have the strengthCopy !req
638. to serve your country.Copy !req
639. Make your meeting
with Skur.Copy !req
640. Let him think you're alone.Copy !req
641. Put him at ease.Copy !req
642. We'll be in
when the time is right.Copy !req
643. Is this why you came
to see me, Mr. Mulder?Copy !req
644. Make me
your stalking horse?Copy !req
645. Make me
your stalking horse?Copy !req
646. I follow my orders.Copy !req
647. I might need that.Copy !req
648. We want him alive.Copy !req
649. Here you go.Copy !req
650. I turned
the lights off out front.Copy !req
651. Just pull the door shut
when you go.Copy !req
652. Just pull the door shut
when you go.Copy !req
653. Okay, thanks
for your help.Copy !req
654. Anything to help out
the Bureau.Copy !req
655. Did you come here to kill me
or to save me?Copy !req
656. I'm here to help you,Copy !req
657. just like
I told your wife.Copy !req
658. My wife is dead.Copy !req
659. I'm dead,
too, inside,Copy !req
660. because of this thing
they put in me.Copy !req
661. For what?Copy !req
662. To turn me into some kind
of killing machine,Copy !req
663. or just to see
what would happen?Copy !req
664. They're not coming, you know.Copy !req
665. They wanted me
to kill you,Copy !req
666. They wanted me
to kill you,Copy !req
667. or you wouldn't be here.Copy !req
668. You're part
of their test now, too.Copy !req
669. I don't want to kill you.Copy !req
670. I know.Copy !req
671. Hey!Copy !req
672. Mulder.Copy !req
673. Mm-mm.Copy !req
674. No!Copy !req
675. I can't believe my father
threw in with these men.Copy !req
676. He let them dictate
his conscience.Copy !req
677. Oh, don't fool yourself.Copy !req
678. None of us
are free to choose.Copy !req
679. I was ruinedCopy !req
680. for my insubordination.Copy !req
681. You keep digging
through the... the X Files,Copy !req
682. You keep digging
through the... the X Files,Copy !req
683. and they'll bury you, too.Copy !req
684. Skur died
saying my father's name.Copy !req
685. Why?Copy !req
686. I haven't the faintest idea.Copy !req
687. Well, there was, um...Copy !req
688. there was one thing
you didn't explain.Copy !req
689. It was, uh... how Skur
was able to get away,Copy !req
690. how he was able
to live in obscurityCopy !req
691. how he was able
to live in obscurityCopy !req
692. for the last 38 years.Copy !req
693. 38 years?Copy !req
694. My God.Copy !req
695. Well, I kept hearing things
through the years, you know.Copy !req
696. Uh, people tell me things.Copy !req
697. I heard that he was dead—Copy !req
698. that he'd been kept
in some secret labCopy !req
699. while they finished up
the, uh, experiment.Copy !req
700. (chuckles):
I even thought that maybe...Copy !req
701. maybe some poor
innocent bastard—Copy !req
702. somebody with a conscience—Copy !req
703. somebody with a conscience—Copy !req
704. might have let him go.Copy !req
705. Why would anyone do that?Copy !req
706. Why let a killer go free?Copy !req
707. In the hope
that by letting him live,Copy !req
708. In the hope
that by letting him live,Copy !req
709. the truth of the crimes
that were committedCopy !req
710. against him and the othersCopy !req
711. might someday be exposed.Copy !req
712. I made this!Copy !req
