The X-Files 4x23

1. Fox!

2. Wake up.

3. Fox!

4. Samantha?

5. Shh.

6. They'll hear you.

7. Shh!

8. No!

9. (sobs): No!

10. My baby!

11. Get away!

12. I'm afraid, Fox.

13. I'm afraid.

14. Hello?

15. Scully.

16. Mulder, what time is it?

17. I don't know.

18. It's almost 5:00 a.m. Is something wrong?

19. I think so.

20. Where are you?

21. I think I'm in a...

22. a motel room in Providence, but...

23. a motel room in Providence, but...

24. Where?

25. Rhode Island.

26. What are you doing there?

27. I don't know.

28. There's... there's blood all over me.

29. Are you hurt, Mulder?

30. I don't think so.

31. I don't think it's my blood.

32. Mulder?

33. Mulder?

34. Mulder?

35. Yeah?

36. You okay?

37. I can't get warm.

38. Do you feel sick?

39. Nauseous or dizzy?

40. N-No, but I, uh...

41. I woke up on the floor with a pounding headache.

42. I woke up on the floor with a pounding headache.

43. Were you here alone?

44. I think so.

45. I don't know.

46. I don't remember anything.

47. Track my finger.

48. Do you know what day it is?

49. Uh...

50. No, what day is it?

51. It's Sunday.

52. What's the last thing that you remember?

53. I was, uh... I was in my apartment.

54. I talked to you on the phone.

55. That was Friday.

56. I've been here since Friday?

57. I've been here since Friday?

58. I don't know, but you packed a bag.

59. There's a change of clothes in there.

60. Do you feel any pain?

61. Did you receive a blow to your head?

62. No. No.

63. Did you take anything, Mulder?

64. No. No.

65. Are you sure you didn't cut yourself?

66. Yeah.

67. Where's your weapon?

68. I don't know.

69. I don't know.

70. Two rounds have been fired.

71. I don't remember that.

72. Mulder, I need to get you to a hospital.

73. You have to be examined

74. You have to be examined

75. by a neurologist.

76. You have had a serious cerebral event.

77. It could be a viral infection

78. or possibly the early stages of encephalitis.

79. If there was a crime committed, I need to know what happened.

80. Mulder, the first thing that you need to do

81. is to take care of yourself.

82. Mulder, listen to me.

83. We are going to figure this out,

84. but first, we have to determine the cause.

85. You cannot take something like this lightly.

86. If this is an aneurysm, it could drop you in a second.

87. Are these your keys?

88. No.

89. No.

90. You checked in alone around noon on Saturday.

91. The manager's got no record

92. of any phone calls made from the room.

93. No visitors.

94. Well, then, how did I get here?

95. You drove.

96. He's got a license number of a car registered.

97. Do you have those keys you found in your room?

98. That's not my car.

99. There's blood on the steering wheel, Mulder.

100. Car's registered under a David Cassandra.

101. The address is right here in Providence.

102. Who's Amy?

103. That's what I'm going to find out, Mulder,

104. but first, I'm going to check you out,

105. because you have no business even walking around here.

106. because you have no business even walking around here.

107. No, Scully, if I've shot someone, if my weapon's

108. been used in a crime, I need to know.

109. You are taking a big risk, Mulder.

110. I feel strongly about this.

111. I know you do, but it's my risk.

112. Can I help you?

113. Are you Amy?

114. No, she's not here right now.

115. Is this David Cassandra's house?

116. This is David and Amy's house.

117. And who are you?

118. I'm the housekeeper.

119. Who are you?

120. We're with the FBI.

121. Why do you have Amy's keys?

122. Is something the matter? Possibly.

123. Is, uh, Amy or David reachable in any way?

124. They're out right now.

125. I don't know where they are.

126. That, uh, painting... behind you.

127. Uh, do you think I could take a look at it?

128. Uh, do you think I could take a look at it?

129. Yeah.

130. Who painted this?

131. Amy.

132. Mulder, what's up?

133. I know this house.

134. How?

135. I don't know.

136. I've seen it before.

137. Does this house have any special meaning

138. to Amy or David?

139. I know it's her favorite subject.

140. I know it's her favorite subject.

141. It's the house that she grew up in.

142. Actually, it's all she paints.

143. I've been to that house.

144. When?

145. I don't know, but I've been there.

146. Do you know anything else about this house?

147. Uh, I know it's out in Chepachet.

148. Where's that?

149. That's about 20 miles from here on Route 8.

150. My parents had a summer house

151. out there when I was a kid in Rhode Island.

152. Well, if you've been here, Mulder,

153. I don't think it was any time recently.

154. I don't think it was any time recently.

155. The place looks abandoned and completely overgrown.

156. Mulder.

157. Mulder?

158. Can you hear me?

159. Mulder? Mulder?

160. MRS.How can you do this to our family?

161. MR.I'm not doing it! It's not just me.

162. These orders are coming down from on high, and...

163. You're a little spy.

164. Mulder?

165. Mulder, can you hear me?

166. What happened?

167. I don't know.

168. It just hit me.

169. It just hit me.

170. You fell to your knees and grabbed your head

171. like you were in terrible pain.

172. You were completely nonresponsive.

173. Do you remember any of that?

174. No.

175. I remember what I saw.

176. What do you mean, what you saw?

177. I had a very vivid flashback to my childhood.

178. Except I was there.

179. Do you remember anything else?

180. No, just that it was very real.

181. Hmm.

182. Your heart is racing.

183. Your heart is racing.

184. What do you think it was?

185. It was some kind of a seizure.

186. Some kind of acute physiological disturbance.

187. I couldn't tell if you lost consciousness,

188. but, uh, it was definitely some kind of clonic event.

189. Kind of an electrical storm in the brain.

190. Brought on by what?

191. That's what a specialist

192. is going to have to tell you, Mulder.

193. I feel really good right now.

194. Mulder, you are not really good.

195. Mulder, you are not really good.

196. I think I've been here before.

197. What, in your childhood?

198. Maybe.

199. I don't think anybody's lived here

200. I don't think anybody's lived here

201. in a long time.

202. I'm going to check upstairs.

203. Mulder.

204. There's a gunshot wound to her heart.

205. This must be Amy Cassandra.

206. And her husband.

207. They'd like to ask you some questions.

208. I told them about your condition.

209. You don't have to speak to them

210. if you don't want to.

211. You mean not without my attorney present?

212. Mulder, I refuse to believe that you had any part in this.

213. I had those people's blood on my shirt, Scully.

214. I was missing for two days.

215. I have no recollection of my actions during those two days.

216. I have no recollection of my actions during those two days.

217. There were two rounds discharged from my gun.

218. I had the keys to this house, the keys to their car.

219. Do the words "Orenthal James Simpson"

220. mean anything to you?

221. How you feeling, Agent Mulder?

222. I'm a little confused.

223. Your partner here says that you're suffering

224. from some kind of a seizure—

225. that you had one right here in the yard.

226. What brought you to this house, Agent Mulder?

227. I don't know. I, uh...

228. I think I may have come here as a kid.

229. You think?

230. You think?

231. Well, my parents had a summer house

232. in Quonochontaug, so...

233. But you don't know anything about

234. David or Amy Cassandra, the victims?

235. I don't ever remember meeting them, no.

236. So what you're saying, then, is: first time you saw them

237. was when you walked into this house, using their keys,

238. and you found them there on the floor.

239. That's what I'm saying.

240. We got plenty of prints in that house—

241. some with blood on them.

242. Now, we're going

243. to run those prints, Agent Mulder.

244. Is that the story you want to stick with?

245. For now.

246. Would you like to come down

247. to the station and elaborate on that statement?

248. Agent Mulder's not going anywhere but to a hospital.

249. Okay, but we're all going down there together.

250. Agent Mulder, I'd like you to ride with us.

251. Mulder, I'd advise you not to say anything more—

252. not until I take a look at those bodies

253. and the forensics reports.

254. Amy Anne Cassandra, Caucasian female.

255. Birth records indicate her age at 62 years.

256. The subject is 165 pounds, 67 inches in height.

257. Preliminary exam indicates cause of death

258. due to a gunshot wound to the chest.

259. Powder burns and flashing at the point of entry

260. approximately four inches below the clavicle

261. indicating the shot was delivered at point-blank range.

262. indicating the shot was delivered at point-blank range.

263. Dorsal beveling of the shoulder blade

264. is visible at the exit wound.

265. The surrounding tissue is jagged and torn.

266. There are no other signs of trauma present on the body.

267. Did you see this? Yeah.

268. From the scabbing, it looks like a preexisting, superficial

269. puncture wound. Do you mind?

270. What are you looking for?

271. I'm not sure.

272. Do you have a magnifying glass?

273. Thanks.

274. I just want to make sure that in addition

275. to the autopsy you also do a craniotomy

276. and a histological examination.

277. I think it's clear what killed these people.

278. Yeah. I think it is, too, but what I'm

279. more interested in right now is why they died.

280. What's that?

281. Have you jogged your memory at all, Agent Mulder?

282. You want to change your story?

283. No. Why?

284. Because I have evidence here

285. that contradicts what it is you've told us.

286. Well, I haven't really told you anything.

287. You told us you haven't been to that house since your childhood

288. and that you didn't know Amy or David Cassandra.

289. And you're telling me that what's in that bag

290. is evidence that I'm a liar?

291. I'm not saying you're a liar, Agent Mulder.

292. I'm not saying you're a liar, Agent Mulder.

293. I would like to believe that this memory lapse was real

294. and that you murdered these two people

295. in some fit of blind insanity.

296. What's in the bag?

297. It isn't your gun...

298. which in our preliminary forensics analysis

299. seems to be the murder weapon...

300. judging from the slugs

301. we pulled from the floor and the wall

302. and the execution-style point-blank range.

303. Is any of this coming back to you, Agent Mulder?

304. No.

305. Can I see what's in the bag now?

306. Be my guest.

307. There are two blood types on that shirt, Agent Mulder—

308. one matching Amy Cassandra's,

309. the other matching David Cassandra's.

310. Is that your shirt, Agent Mulder?

311. Is that your shirt, Agent Mulder?

312. Yes.

313. Can you explain to me how the blood of two people

314. you claim not to know got onto your shirt?

315. No.

316. What about the prints... in the house?

317. Were they my prints?

318. Look, you're not going to get a confession out of me,

319. because I can't answer your questions,

320. because I don't remember.

321. You have the right to remain silent.

322. If you give up the right to remain silent,

323. anything you say can and will be used against you

324. in a court of law.

325. You have the right to speak with an attorney

326. and have an attorney present during questioning.

327. If you so desire and cannot afford one,

328. an attorney will be appointed for you

329. without charge before questioning.

330. You understand each of the rights

331. I have explained to you?

332. Mulder.

333. I'm going to get you out of here.

334. You're a doctor, not a lawyer, Scully.

335. Did you make a confession?

336. No. Only to my own ignorance.

337. Detective Curtis, before you go through all that trouble,

338. I need you to consider evidence

339. that I think casts doubt

340. on Agent Mulder's involvement in this crime.

341. What kind of evidence?

342. Medical evidence.

343. The toxicology report on Amy Cassandra

344. indicates that there was a rapid-acting anesthetic

345. indicates that there was a rapid-acting anesthetic

346. called ketamine in her system.

347. Ketamine? That's a veterinary drug, isn't it?

348. Typically, but when ingested by a person,

349. it can cause hallucinations. So?

350. So, I went down to the hospital to go over

351. Agent Mulder's medical charts and his blood work,

352. and there are traces of the same drug in his system.

353. How would that get there?

354. Probably injected— there was a small bruise from an injection

355. on Amy Cassandra's right hip.

356. Now, I think that if you were examined again

357. that we would find a corresponding puncture.

358. Given by whom?

359. Given by whom?

360. I don't know, but the presence of such a powerful drug

361. could explain his memory loss or the blackouts.

362. Given the weight of all the other evidence...

363. I think that's all it explains.

364. Scully...

365. you don't have to do this.

366. Mulder, you have to help me out.

367. There is nothing here that points directly to your guilt.

368. I mean, unless somebody can show me with absolute certainty

369. that you were holding the weapon that killed those two people,

370. the-the rest of the narrative is far too convenient and suspect.

371. the-the rest of the narrative is far too convenient and suspect.

372. The drug in your system

373. already suggests other explanations.

374. What? That I was partying with a few senior citizens?

375. You're jailing an innocent man.

376. Yeah, well, this way, he won't get lost for two days

377. and do something else he won't remember.

378. Shot fired!

379. I'm a doctor.

380. Somebody call the paramedics.

381. He's dead.

382. I need to speak with Detective Curtis right now.

383. Did this officer have a history

384. Did this officer have a history

385. of depression or mental illness?

386. He'd been remanded from his beat assignment

387. to a desk job a year ago.

388. His former partner had complained

389. on a number of occasions

390. about his tendency toward extreme irritability

391. and confabulation of the truth.

392. How do you mean?

393. The man we're talking about had become

394. something of a joke on the force—

395. one of those guys who believes in...

396. you know, extraterrestrials, stuff like that?

397. Do you see these photos?

398. Do you see these photos?

399. Yeah.

400. Does this mean anything to you?

401. Should it?

402. Well, I think that it speaks

403. to a pronounced mental illness.

404. The compulsive and repetitive act of removing his own image

405. from these photos leads me to believe

406. that he not only believed these stories,

407. but was traumatized by them.

408. I thought you told me this was going

409. to help explain something about your partner's crime.

410. What's that?

411. Amy Cassandra.

412. Both your officer and Amy Cassandra

413. had identical puncture wounds

414. at the top of the frontal lobe.

415. Now, in her autopsy,

416. Amy Cassandra's was a deep puncture

417. through the cranium to the dura mater.

418. And my officer had the same thing?

419. Yes.

420. I think your officer

421. knew of Amy Cassandra, and somehow

422. his suicide is linked to her death,

423. which leads me to believe

424. which leads me to believe

425. that what we're dealing with here is not murder.

426. It's something else.

427. It's possibly even a suicide pact.

428. You're going to have to prove that to me.

429. Not Samantha!

430. Not Samantha! Teena, no!

431. Not Samantha!

432. MRS. No!

433. Guard!

434. Guard!

435. I need to talk to someone!

436. Guard!

437. According to the corrections officer,

438. Agent Mulder kept everybody awake last night.

439. He was demanding to talk to you.

440. He finally shut up about an hour ago.

441. Did he say about what?

442. I think your partner's memories

443. are coming back to him.

444. I need to talk to him alone if you don't mind.

445. I need to talk to him alone if you don't mind.

446. I heard you didn't get much sleep.

447. I didn't kill those people, Scully.

448. I know that, and I think I've gathered enough proof

449. and evidence of your innocence to get you out of here.

450. From where?

451. The forensics reports.

452. The, uh, the shirt that you were wearing

453. did have the victims' blood on it,

454. but the blood-splatter pattern doesn't match

455. but the blood-splatter pattern doesn't match

456. the point-of-entry detail.

457. In fact, Detective Curtis

458. and his team have been able to put together

459. enough contradictory evidence

460. to make a statement to the press

461. saying that the Cassandras' death

462. was as a result of a murder-suicide.

463. But I was there.

464. Yes.

465. And I still don't remember why.

466. I think I have an idea about that, too.

467. Amy Cassandra believed that she was an alien abductee.

468. And I contacted her.

469. Yes... apparently.

470. Yes... apparently.

471. According to an article I read on Amy,

472. she had begun psychiatric treatment

473. that was effectively recovering her past.

474. The repetitive behavior exhibited in those paintings

475. that we saw was an expression

476. of that treatment.

477. But why shoot herself and her husband?

478. I can't say definitively,

479. but judging from an almost identical suicide

480. of a police officer

481. who was receiving the same psychiatric care,

482. I believe that the victims were suffering

483. from something called Waxman-Geschwind syndrome,

484. from something called Waxman-Geschwind syndrome,

485. the symptoms of which are trance-like states

486. leading to vivid dreams about the past—

487. dreams that are more detailed

488. than the conscious mind can recall.

489. It's also called Dostoyevsky syndrome

490. because the Russian novelist was suffering from it, too.

491. What was I doing there, Scully,

492. and why didn't I do anything to stop it?

493. I can't explain that.

494. I've arranged for your arraignment

495. in one hour.

496. I think that by then,

497. Detective Curtis and I will have gathered

498. enough forensics data that you'll be released.

499. enough forensics data that you'll be released.

500. I still need to know why, though.

501. This is the office of the psychologist

502. that treated Amy Cassandra.

503. Have you been here before?

504. I don't know, but we found my car.

505. It's been here for a few days.

506. What was the name of that psychologist?

507. Hello.

508. Dr. Goldstein?

509. My name is Fox Mulder.

510. Have we met?

511. I don't believe so.

512. My receptionist says you're from the FBI?

513. Yes. We're investigating

514. the deaths of Amy and David Cassandra.

515. the deaths of Amy and David Cassandra.

516. We understand that Amy was a patient of yours?

517. Yes.

518. Please, sit down.

519. I was very upset to learn about Amy.

520. She was a troubled woman who'd struggled

521. through an unfortunate period of darkness in her life.

522. Are you referring to her belief that she was an abductee?

523. This term "alien abductee"--

524. although I recognize there is an associated syndrome

525. and a rather remarkable collection

526. of shared experiences for those

527. who believe in the phenomena, my treatment of Amy was simply

528. who believe in the phenomena, my treatment of Amy was simply

529. an aggressive method to access buried or repressed memories.

530. How do you mean "aggressive"?

531. Well, I use a, uh, method of therapy

532. that simulates an electrical impulse in the brain

533. using light and sound.

534. Did you also use this treatment

535. on a police officer named Michael Fazekas?

536. Yes. Why?

537. Mr. Fazekas shot himself

538. in the head last night.

539. Oh, my God.

540. Is this an accepted form

541. of medical treatment?

542. It's unconventional, but it's not invasive.

543. It's unconventional, but it's not invasive.

544. Are you familiar with

545. Waxman-Geschwind syndrome, Dr. Goldstein?

546. Yes.

547. Did you know

548. that Amy Cassandra suffered from it?

549. Waxman-Geschwind—

550. if you know anything about it—

551. is not necessarily a destructive condition.

552. In fact, Amy, after undergoing treatment,

553. experienced periods of extreme happiness and creativity.

554. But you had no idea—

555. you had no indication that she might have taken her own life?

556. No.

557. Of course not.

558. I have been in practice for over 40 years.

559. I have been in practice for over 40 years.

560. I have a very good ethical and professional reputation,

561. if you'd care to check.

562. That won't be necessary.

563. I know what you do.

564. I have been here before, Scully.

565. I met Dr. Goldstein with Amy Cassandra.

566. This man is lying about more than that.

567. I think that he administered the ketamine

568. to Amy and to you.

569. I think that you were treated by him,

570. and I think that your blackouts— these seizures—

571. and I think that your blackouts— these seizures—

572. are a result of that.

573. I think you're right.

574. Why would you do that, Mulder?

575. Why would you undergo something

576. as crazy and dangerous as this?

577. Mulder? Mulder!

578. Mulder!

579. MRS. my baby!

580. Mulder?

581. I'm fine.

582. No, I am not going to take that for an answer.

583. No, I am not going to take that for an answer.

584. You do not belong at work.

585. You need to be somewhere where you can be monitored.

586. You are a danger to yourself and a danger to me.

587. Are you hearing me?

588. Give me the car keys. No, you're not driving.

589. You're not doing anything until these symptoms go away.

590. Scully, I don't want these symptoms to go away.

591. Whatever's happening to me,

592. whatever treatment I've received,

593. is allowing me to go back into my unconscious.

594. The truth is in there recorded, and I've gotten access to it.

595. What happened to my sister— the reason she was taken—

596. is beginning to become clear to me,

597. and I need to know that.

598. Now, give me the car keys.

599. To go where?

600. To go where?

601. To my mother's in Greenwich.

602. Okay...

603. but I'm driving.

604. Fox.

605. I need to speak to you.

606. What's happened, Fox? Why have you come here?

607. What's happened, Fox? Why have you come here?

608. You've kept things from me. You've kept secrets from me.

609. MRS. What's the matter with him?

610. He's, uh, undergone a treatment.

611. He believes it's helped him to remember things.

612. Remember what?

613. You told me that when they took Samantha,

614. it was because you had to make a choice,

615. but that's not how it happened.

616. It wasn't your choice to make.

617. What do you want to hear from me?

618. I want to know what happened that night on Quonochontaug,

619. and I need to speak to you privately.

620. You had some kind of relationship with him.

621. Who?

622. You know who— the man who worked

623. with my father, the man who came to you

624. that night when I was 12 and forced you to choose Samantha.

625. No, Fox.

626. Yes!

627. You betrayed my father, your husband.

628. Never!

629. How far back did it go?

630. How dare you!

631. How dare you come here and accuse me.

632. How dare you come here and accuse me.

633. Who is my father?

634. What do you want, to kill him again?

635. Just answer the question, Mom.

636. Just answer the question!

637. I am your mother, and I will not tolerate

638. any more of your questions.

639. You're bleeding, Fox.

640. What did you do to me?

641. I told you... You treated me.

642. I asked you to treat me to recover my past.

643. I asked you to treat me to recover my past.

644. I did nothing wrong.

645. You put a hole in my head.

646. A slight electrical stimulation.

647. It triggered my memory.

648. Yes, as you had hoped.

649. Now I want you to finish the job.

650. Let's do it.

651. I want to remember.

652. You're a little spy.

653. Fox...

654. Fox.

655. Little spy.

656. Fox...

657. Not Samantha!

658. Fox...

659. Upstairs. 245.

660. Dr. Charles Goldstein?

661. Dr. Charles Goldstein?

662. Dr. Goldstein, you're under arrest.

663. Please keep your hands where they are.

664. Bag those gloves as evidence.

665. Yes, sir. Someone read him his rights.

666. Hands behind your back, please.

667. Where is he?

668. Mulder.

669. Where's Mulder?

670. He's not here.

671. Did you ask Dr. Goldstein?

672. Goldstein wouldn't say one way or the other.

673. Goldstein wouldn't say one way or the other.

674. Stop that car!

675. Hey!

676. Hold it, Dave! Hold up!

677. Open the back door.

678. What did you do to him?

679. Look. I know he came back here.

680. This is the only place he would have gone.

681. Did you treat him?

682. Damn it! Answer me!

683. Yes.

684. Where is he now?

685. I don't know where he went.

686. What was the last thing he said to you?

687. What was the last thing he said to you?

688. He said he was going to exorcise his demons.

689. Agent Scully?

690. Yeah.

691. Frank Imhof.

692. Is he in there?

693. Saw the light go on a couple of minutes ago.

694. Got to be somebody in there.

695. We got here as soon as you called.

696. We got here as soon as you called.

697. All right.

698. That man in there is armed.

699. He is a federal officer in dire need of medical attention.

700. He is not himself. Now, I'm going in there.

701. If at any time he should flee that house,

702. you need to tell your officers not to shoot.

703. Mulder?

704. Leave me alone, Scully.

705. Mulder, it's me.

706. Scully, leave me alone.

707. MRS. Not Samantha! Not Samantha! Not Samantha!

708. MRS. Not Samantha! Not Samantha! Not Samantha!

709. Fox...

710. It's... all falling into place.

711. Mulder, put down the gun.

712. No. Don't try to stop me.

713. Please, Mulder...

714. Wake up, Fox.

715. Wake up, Fox.

716. MRS. No! My baby!

717. I'm afraid, Mom. I'm afraid.

718. Get away!

719. Are you going to shoot me, Mulder?

720. Is that how much this means to you?

721. Mulder, listen to me.

722. You have been given a powerful hallucinogen.

723. You don't know that these memories are yours.

724. You don't know that these memories are yours.

725. This is not the way to the truth, Mulder.

726. You've got to trust me.

727. Just shut up!

728. Put down the gun.

729. Let it go.

730. We got shots fired. Move!

731. Although cleared of any wrongdoing

732. in the deaths of Amy and David Cassandra,

733. Agent Mulder still has no recollection

734. of the events that led to their deaths.

735. His seizures have subsided with no evidence

736. of permanent cerebral damage,

737. but I'm concerned that this experience

738. but I'm concerned that this experience

739. will have a lasting effect.

740. Agent Mulder undertook this treatment

741. hoping to lay claim to his past—

742. that by retrieving memories lost to him,

743. he might finally understand the path he's on.

744. But if that knowledge remains elusive,

745. and if it's only by knowing where he's been

746. that he can hope to understand where he's going,

747. then I fear Agent Mulder may lose his course,

748. and the truths he's seeking from his childhood

749. and the truths he's seeking from his childhood

750. will continue to evade him...

751. driving him more dangerously forward

752. in impossible pursuit.

753. I made this!
