1. Damn.

2. There's ash in the wine from the fires in Malibu Canyon.

3. You can almost see from here.

4. I want you to know I...

5. I don't do this.

6. I-I mean, I'm... I'm not one of those guys

7. that sends his family on vacation

8. just so he can...

9. but when I met you at the corporate party, I...

10. Shh!

11. It'll be worth it.

12. I'll do things with you no one's ever done.

13. Let's start in the bedroom and work our way downstairs.

14. Okay.

15. Don't let the media in on the writings

16. in blood on the wall.

17. Okay.

18. Excuse me, sir.

19. If I can ask your indulgence.

20. This is a restricted crime scene.

21. This is a restricted crime scene.

22. Agent Mulder. I'm with the Bureau.

23. Nobody called the Bureau.

24. They should have.

25. Look, LAPD's seen— I don't know, what?--

26. maybe a couple of weird crime scenes down the years.

27. I think we can handle things.

28. There's no time for agency rivalries.

29. I don't care about credit for the arrest

30. or what goes on whose record.

31. In the past year, these killers

32. have murdered six people in two states.

33. They only kill at night.

34. By the end of the week, two more people will be dead

35. and they will be gone.

36. Just how do you know all this?

37. There's a file on the previous murders.

38. I've studied it. I've studied them.

39. I've been waiting three months for them to reappear.

40. I've been waiting three months for them to reappear.

41. And just how can you be sure that these are the same killers?

42. The wire reported a body was found drained of blood,

43. bite marks on the exterior jugular

44. and median cubital veins.

45. Every mirror in the house was smashed.

46. Yeah, well, it's what the wire didn't report

47. that distinguishes this scene.

48. There's writings on the wall

49. written in the victim's blood.

50. "He who eats of my flesh and drinks of my blood

51. "shall have eternal life

52. and I will raise him up on the last day."

53. They have the same feeble literal grasp of the Bible

54. They have the same feeble literal grasp of the Bible

55. as all those big-haired preachers do.

56. The victim— was he a father?

57. Yeah. Three boys.

58. The, uh, family's been notified.

59. In Memphis, they murdered

60. James Ellis, 58,

61. father of Ellis and Sons Clothiers.

62. The second victim was a Korean woman—

63. Linda Sun.

64. The third victim was a Jesuit theologian.

65. Excuse me.

66. In Portland, three months ago,

67. the first victim was a priest.

68. The second victim was the only son

69. The second victim was the only son

70. in a family of six children.

71. The last victim was the owner of a New Age bookshop—

72. the Holy Spirit.

73. I believe that's how they perceive themselves:

74. as a kind of unholy trinity.

75. They use these to extract the blood, and then store it

76. for a quick fix later.

77. Their need is insatiable,

78. but murdering for blood risks

79. exposure and capture.

80. If my profile of the previous cases holds true,

81. they've been living in the city and working near blood products

82. for the past month.

83. for the past month.

84. Look, Agent Mulder, uh...

85. look, I'm really sorry I was such a hard-ass back there,

86. but in this town, it's really tough to trust anyone.

87. Truth is I'd be happy

88. to have you work on our investigation.

89. Now, this is Detective Gwynn... I'm working alone.

90. An FBI agent without a partner?

91. Look, Mulder, our department's under a crisis alert right now

92. because of the fires in the canyon.

93. The fact is, I don't think I can free up

94. many resources for you right now.

95. I only need one thing.

96. Hollywood Blood Bank.

97. Yeah, hi. This is Marty Mulder from your payroll service.

98. I have a question regarding the W-4 form

99. of a recent employee.

100. You mean Frank?

101. When was he hired?

102. A couple weeks ago.

103. He's the night watchman.

104. Federal agent! Hey!

105. Easy, man, easy!

106. Sorry, man.

107. Sorry, man.

108. I didn't know you were there.

109. Damn freak night watchman down there

110. always breaking the lightbulbs.

111. I'll wait upstairs.

112. Federal agent!

113. Freeze!

114. Turn off the lights! Turn them off!

115. Turn off the lights! Turn them off!

116. You're killing me!

117. Turn them off! Turn them off!

118. Please! Tell us your real name.

119. I can't take it!

120. Turn off the lights!

121. You're killing me! Turn them off

122. Please!

123. Turn off the lights! Please!

124. Turn them off!

125. That better?

126. I'll only talk to him.

127. Lucky you.

128. You know what we are.

129. What are you?

130. He is the father, I am the son, and she is the unholy spirit.

131. He is the father, I am the son, and she is the unholy spirit.

132. And the three of you killed Garret Lorre.

133. No.

134. Your fingerprints were found at the crime scene.

135. No.

136. When a snake eats a fly, it's not murder.

137. It just is.

138. Frogs eat flies.

139. Are you dead?

140. I never will be.

141. You believe that?

142. Don't you want to live forever?

143. Don't you want to live forever?

144. Well, not if drawstring pants come back into style.

145. Look.

146. What nobody realizes is that there is no afterlife.

147. I know this— Listen to me, listen to me.

148. I know this because when we prolong our lives

149. by taking theirs,

150. all I see is such... horror in their eyes.

151. And that's because

152. at that moment, they're face-to-face with death,

153. at that moment, they're face-to-face with death,

154. and then suddenly they realize there's nothing else.

155. There's no heaven.

156. There's no soul.

157. There's just rot and there's just decay.

158. And I will never, ever, ever, ever have to face that.

159. It's a stiff price though.

160. Look at yourself— drinking blood,

161. living in darkness,

162. unable to see your reflection

163. in a mirror— or is that just a myth?

164. I can't be seen in a mirror.

165. I can't be seen in a mirror.

166. Look...

167. anything worth anything has a price,

168. and when I'm standing next to your deathbed

169. looking as young as I look right now

170. and I see that fear in your eyes

171. at the moment of death...

172. then, then tell me the price is too stiff.

173. It's more likely I'll be looking

174. into your eyes at the moment

175. into your eyes at the moment

176. before they lead you into the gas chamber.

177. But that's a moment you won't have to face

178. if you tell me where the others are.

179. Why would I?

180. They're the only ones that can kill me.

181. Well, if you are what you say you are,

182. I know what can kill you.

183. It'd be very easy to cover those windows.

184. It'd be very easy to cover those windows.

185. Just tell me where the other two are.

186. In a couple hours, there'll be no escaping the sun...

187. son.

188. If he wants to talk,

189. cover the windows and call me.

190. What if he turns into a bat

191. and flies out through the bars?

192. That man is clearly delusional,

193. but I get the sense that not even he believes his own claims.

194. but I get the sense that not even he believes his own claims.

195. For now, we've got to play along with his beliefs.

196. I'm hoping that the sunlight will give him an excuse to talk.

197. Why don't you go back to your hotel and get some sleep.

198. I didn't check into a hotel room.

199. I don't sleep anymore.

200. Number four, right away!

201. Number four, right away!

202. An edema ball at the nostrils,

203. rupture of the skull due to internal steam pressure—

204. these are indications of long exposure

205. to extreme temperatures, not a sunburn for 15 seconds.

206. The guards found no flammable materials?

207. I had believed that this man's illness

208. was psychological.

209. There is a condition known as Gunther's disease—

210. congenital erythropoietic porphyria,

211. creating cutaneous photosensitivity.

212. creating cutaneous photosensitivity.

213. I'm familiar with porphyria; it's an affliction that causes

214. lesions and blisters when skin is exposed to sunlight,

215. not fourth-degree burns.

216. Sufferers may have a hema deficiency

217. which can be supplemented by a small ingestion of blood,

218. not the kind of blood-thirst that this man had.

219. It's probably ignorance of porphyria

220. as a disease that led to the creation

221. of vampire myths in Asia in the Middle Ages.

222. I had dismissed the possibility

223. of the actual existence of such a creature as myth.

224. of the actual existence of such a creature as myth.

225. You are really upsetting me...

226. on several levels.

227. When will you get the blood tests back?

228. Next week.

229. What's this purple stain here?

230. Could be an ink stamp,

231. like they give at a party or a club.

232. Can you read it?

233. It is possible that the heat burned the ink permanently

234. into the lower levels of the skin.

235. An old coroner's trick.

236. I can make a quarter appear from behind your ear.

237. Are you about to ask

238. what a normal person like me is doing in a place like this?

239. How do you define normal?

240. Misha, red wine.

241. I don't.

242. How do you?

243. All I know is, uh...

244. normal is not what I feel.

245. You've lost someone.

246. Not a lover.

247. Not a lover.

248. A friend.

249. I'll get these.

250. He who drinks my blood...

251. Has eternal life.

252. You're not interested in this place, in what we do.

253. You're not interested in this place, in what we do.

254. How do you know?

255. You're afraid of me.

256. I take the life of others...

257. inside me...

258. into my blood.

259. I need to know.

260. All day long,

261. I deal with equity,

262. notes, bonds.

263. Nothing that's real.

264. This gives my life... life.

265. My name's Kristen.

266. It's a normal name.

267. AIDS...

268. Aren't you afraid?

269. I wish I could die.

270. Father.

271. The sun.

272. I don't know who you are, freak, but we're two consenting adults.

273. Yeah.

274. Get the hell out of here.

275. Kristen?

276. Kristen?

277. Kristen?

278. Kristen?

279. Come out.

280. It's my turn.

281. Don't worry.

282. I took care of that guy.

283. I took care of that guy.

284. I told you I'd protect you.

285. The murderers cut off the power supply,

286. at some point, and the phone.

287. Fits their M.O.

288. Agent Mulder, this is

289. our forensic dentist you requested— Dr. Jacobs.

290. How do you do?

291. I don't want to bias your report,

292. but I need a preliminary examination

293. for anything... unnatural.

294. Uh-huh.

295. Shine the light down here.

296. Agent Mulder.

297. All this time, I've been putting

298. raspberry sauce on ice cream.

299. Check these prints immediately.

300. One will be the victim's, the other should be

301. the woman we're looking for. Right.

302. the woman we're looking for. Right.

303. Well, the bites are not done by an animal.

304. These are human.

305. And, realize this is a cursory exam,

306. but I'd say they were made by three different people.

307. The unholy spirit.

308. We got the front, you go around the back.

309. Uh-huh. You, check the garage.

310. Okay. Do it. Open her up.

311. Miss Kilar?

312. Miss Kilar?

313. Los Angeles Police Department.

314. We have a warrant to search the premises.

315. I found these.

316. Veterinary needles.

317. Veterinary needles.

318. Size matches the puncture wounds

319. of the previous victims.

320. And look at this. This is from a snake bite kit.

321. It's placed over the wound to extract poison.

322. Only, this one... Has blood in it.

323. Detective, over here.

324. Well, she wasn't at work, and she's not here.

325. She's gone, and she's not coming back.

326. Special Agent Fox Mulder.

327. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

328. They're after you.

329. How do you know?

330. The bread.

331. Legends in Eastern European countries.

332. It's said that one can protect oneself

333. biting bread filled with blood.

334. biting bread filled with blood.

335. You were protecting yourself.

336. And now you're protecting me?

337. I think it's best if I took you

338. into protective custody.

339. They'll kill once more.

340. They'll try to kill you. Hmm.

341. Why are you here alone?

342. Because you think you're not afraid?

343. Because you need to know.

344. You need to know they are who you believe they are.

345. What I believe you to be.

346. One change in the wind,

347. and the fires will move this way.

348. Have you ever tasted blood?

349. No, you haven't.

350. Blood tastes...

351. dangerous.

352. It's sweet... and thick.

353. You were in Memphis and Portland when the other murders occurred.

354. How are you connected?

355. When I was a little girl, my father beat me.

356. "Abused" is too frail a word.

357. He showed his love for me by beating me.

358. I was dead.

359. One night, he hit me so hard,

360. he knocked out two teeth, then locked me in my room.

361. The blood poured from my mouth onto the floor

362. and down my throat.

363. It was the only way I knew I was alive.

364. I met John in Chicago.

365. You know him as "the son."

366. He also beat me.

367. I guess that's the way it works sometimes.

368. I guess that's the way it works sometimes.

369. He hit me once and cut open my lip.

370. I was angry.

371. As revenge, I jumped on him

372. and I bit through his lip.

373. He tasted my blood.

374. And I tasted his.

375. After that, we were into blood sports.

376. After that, we were into blood sports.

377. But...

378. I never...

379. I lost him.

380. One night he came home with two others,

381. and it turned...

382. unnatural.

383. I left him and I moved to Memphis.

384. I left him and I moved to Memphis.

385. But they followed you.

386. They want you.

387. I'm tired of running.

388. And you're here to protect me.

389. You trying to ward me off?

390. It's from someone I lost.

391. It's from someone I lost.

392. Well, I hope you find her.

393. The one you lost, John, he's...

394. dead.

395. But they've picked up another.

396. They're three again.

397. Kristen, I think you'll be safer

398. if you come back to the police station with me.

399. Without him, they won't come for me.

400. I won't go.

401. Then I won't go.

402. Then I won't go.

403. You need to get cleaned up.

404. Yeah?

405. No mirrors.

406. I don't like the way I look.

407. I don't like the way I look.

408. That makes this hard.

409. I'll do it.

410. It's not who you are.

411. Doesn't make you happy.

412. I've been watching.

413. I had to wait for you to finish.

414. I had to wait to tell you.

415. It's true.

416. I was as surprised as anybody.

417. You can live forever.

418. Everybody else just dies,

419. but we... we come back.

420. The spirit showed me.

421. And now she'll show you.

422. We live in a different world, Kristen,

423. We live in a different world, Kristen,

424. and nobody on the outside can end my life.

425. You can't kill me,

426. but I can kill you.

427. I know, Kristen, what I did to you was...

428. If I were to die,

429. I would certainly go to hell for what I did,

430. but I love you,

431. and I can atone for eternity.

432. and I can atone for eternity.

433. Kill him...

434. and we'll be together.

435. You've got to drink the blood of his spirit.

436. But he's not...

437. No, no. He is.

438. A spirit is one who believes.

439. He knows we're possible.

440. You don't have much time before the sun comes up.

441. Cut him open...

442. and we'll finish.

443. You have to go.

444. Are they here?

445. The fire.

446. You have to go.

447. My car's down the hill.

448. Mine's in the garage.

449. The keys are in it.

450. You have to get your things.

451. I'll be right there.

452. He's not dead!

453. John's alive.

454. I saw him.

455. Come on.

456. Are you all right?

457. I won't leave without him.

458. I'll go.

459. We'll rise up!

460. You can't kill us!

461. You're not one of us!

462. But I will be.

463. I'm tasting the blood of a believer.

464. But you haven't taken a life.

465. I'll take mine.

466. Don't do that.

467. Don't do that! Don't!

468. Don't! Don't! No! No!

469. (screaming): No!

470. (screaming): No!

471. Agent Mulder.

472. I'm sorry.

473. We found four bodies— all dead.

474. The remains?

475. The fire was extremely hot.

476. It's just ashes and bones.

477. I made this!
