The X-Files 2x5

1. Hold, punster!

2. Find the prisoner! Find the prisoner!

3. There, there. Whoa!

4. Who's this?

5. There's been a mistake.

6. Get me a lawyer.

7. Forward, punster.

8. Where is the king?

9. Where is the king?

10. In the great hall, sire.

11. Enough. To thy post.

12. Aye, sire.

13. "Ode to the Great Hawk."

14. It can't be.

15. No! No! Not again!

16. Hello, Duane.

17. Nice to see you.

18. Nice to see you too, Doc.

19. How are you feeling today?

20. How are you feeling today?

21. Pretty good.

22. Why don't we sit down, Duane?

23. I want to go over a few things with you.

24. Okay.

25. Now, uh, it says here

26. that you've been refusing to take your medicine.

27. I don't like the way it makes me feel.

28. Okay. All right.

29. Let's talk about that.

30. Because we give you that medicine for a reason, Duane—

31. because of your behavior.

32. because of your behavior.

33. I know, I know.

34. Because we don't want you to hurt anybody again.

35. You're still hearing voices?

36. I'm not crazy, Doc.

37. Duane Barry's not like these other guys.

38. No. Everybody here is different.

39. They're coming again.

40. They're coming again, I can feel it.

41. They're going to take Duane Barry to the place.

42. Nobody's coming, Duane.

43. Nobody's coming, Duane.

44. Nobody can stop them.

45. I'm going to give you a shot.

46. I think you just need some rest.

47. Now, this will make you sleep.

48. And when you wake up,

49. you'll that we didn't let anybody hurt you.

50. Okay, Duane? (door creaking)

51. Duane?

52. Duane!

53. Get away. Get away.

54. Put down the gun, Duane.

55. Give me the keys.

56. Duane...

57. Give me the damn keys!

58. No! No!

59. Either way, Doc,

60. we're getting out of here together.

61. You guys... let's go now!

62. Go! Go! Go!

63. Agent Mulder.

64. Krycek, what's up?

65. There's a situation going down.

66. They want you out there right away.

67. What kind of situation?

68. Hostage negotiation.

69. And they want me?

70. Yeah.

71. Yeah.

72. What for?

73. The guy escaped a mental institution.

74. He's got four people at gunpoint in an office building.

75. Claims he's being controlled by aliens.

76. Stay back behind the barrier!

77. Stay back!

78. Krycek, Mulder, FBI.

79. Right that way, sir.

80. Yes, sir. Okay, I've got it right here in front of me.

81. Lucy?

82. Agent Mulder? Yeah.

83. Lucy Kazdin, negotiation commander.

84. Thanks for coming. This is Agent Krycek.

85. Let me show you what we've got.

86. His name's Duane Barry.

87. His name's Duane Barry.

88. He's armed with a nine-millimeter

89. Smith & Wesson handgun,

90. one nine-round magazine.

91. It is our belief that he's

92. prepared to use the gun and not afraid to die.

93. What does he want?

94. Safe passage for himself

95. and his original hostage— a shrink named Hakkie.

96. Passage to where?

97. He's bent on taking the doctor

98. with him to an alien abduction site,

99. only he can't quite remember where the site is,

100. so he stopped at a travel agency.

101. Is he lucid?

102. Yes, but he's off his medication, so he's manic.

103. Ranting about scoot-mark scars on his body,

104. Ranting about scoot-mark scars on his body,

105. homing devices and a lot of other nonsense.

106. Like what? This whole alien abduction business,

107. which I guess you know something about.

108. Yeah, yeah, but I've never been in a hostage negotiation before.

109. Oh, we'll take you through it.

110. Agent Rich is our advisory commander.

111. He and I will be coaching you.

112. What Mr. Barry needs right now is a friend—

113. someone who appears to understand him

114. and can appeal to his sense of reason.

115. Do we know anything about his abduction experiences?

116. You really believe in this stuff, Agent Mulder?

117. You really believe in this stuff, Agent Mulder?

118. Is that a problem?

119. We're here to save lives.

120. You'll begin negotiations immediately.

121. Every three hours, we'll reevaluate your progress

122. and let our tactical commander advise and update

123. on the use of force.

124. If this man is an abductee,

125. I need to know more about him— his personal history.

126. I need to know more about him— his personal history.

127. Each abduction case is different.

128. That material's not been made available to us.

129. Nobody's thought to call the hospital for records?

130. Look, Agent Mulder, the guy's a psycho.

131. Your object is to keep him on the phone.

132. The longer you do,

133. the more chance he's not going to kill anybody.

134. We stop to do a Freudian analysis,

135. next thing we know, we've got four dead hostages.

136. So whatever crap you've got to make up

137. about spacemen or UFOs,

138. just keep him on the phone.

139. just keep him on the phone.

140. Are we going to have to sit on the floor like this all night?

141. I told you to shut up.

142. We all have families, for God's sake.

143. Duane, don't hurt anyone.

144. Please?

145. I'm not going to hurt you, Doc...

146. because this time,

147. you're going with Duane Barry

148. so you can see what it's like...

149. that it's real!

150. Duane?

151. Yeah?

152. This is Special Agent Fox Mulder.

153. Look, I want to try to help you.

154. Yeah? Well...

155. Yeah? Well...

156. we're just sitting here waiting for, uh, travel plans.

157. I think I know what you're going through, Duane.

158. I just want to make sure you get what you want

159. and that Bob, Kimberly,

160. Gwen and Dr. Hakkie don't get hurt.

161. You know what I'm going through?

162. You think you know what Duane Barry's going through?

163. You don't know jack!

164. I know you're scared, Duane,

165. and that you'd like to see this all come out right.

166. and that you'd like to see this all come out right.

167. Yeah, right...

168. so they can put me back in the nuthouse...

169. where I belong.

170. We're only concerned about your safety, Duane—

171. you and the others.

172. Hey...

173. what's your name— Mulder?

174. I know the routine.

175. Honesty, containment...

176. Honesty, containment...

177. conciliation.

178. Am I missing something?

179. You need someone to trust, Duane.

180. I know a lot of people

181. who have been through similar experiences.

182. You want to do something for me, Agent Mulder?

183. You keep your dogs on a leash.

184. You try to gas me out or do anything stupid,

185. these people die.

186. They're not taking me again.

187. You got it?

188. They can take somebody else!

189. Nobody's going to try anything, Duane.

190. Nobody's going to try anything, Duane.

191. Who is this guy?

192. He's FBI, isn't he?

193. Former FBI.

194. And you didn't think to mention that?

195. He's been out of the Bureau since 1982.

196. Institutionalized on and off for over a decade.

197. It's beside the point.

198. The point being that the Bureau

199. wants to minimize its embarrassment.

200. Isn't that it— that we can police our own?

201. They would like it done

202. as neatly and cleanly as possible.

203. Well, they're off to a hell of a start.

204. Negotiation is a process, Agent Mulder.

205. Negotiation is a process, Agent Mulder.

206. Well, if you just wanted somebody

207. to come down and read the script,

208. you didn't have to bring me out.

209. This method has proven extremely successful in winning

210. the hostage-taker's trust.

211. No, no. That man is afraid.

212. And the only way you're going to win his trust

213. is by trying to understand what he's afraid of.

214. Have you ever spoken

215. to an abductee, Agent Kazdin?

216. Heard them talk about having their brains

217. sucked out through their nostril

218. while being wide awake through the experience?

219. Would you like to know what they do to a woman's ovaries?

220. Not particularly.

221. Well, then understand that you might

222. have to alter your approach a little bit here.

223. have to alter your approach a little bit here.

224. Is there anything I can do?

225. Yeah. What's your name again?

226. Krycek. Krycek.

227. Have you got your notepad? Yeah.

228. Grande two percent cappuccino with vanilla.

229. Agent Rich?

230. the hostages.

231. As you can see, Carl, the SWAT team...

232. Scully.

233. It's me. I'm in Virginia.

234. Yeah, I know. I've been watching it on TV.

235. What's going on out there?

236. What's the media saying?

237. That an escaped mental patient

238. is holding four people hostage in a travel agency.

239. What they're not telling you is that he's former FBI

240. who also claims to be an alien abductee.

241. Seriously?

242. Yeah. His name is Duane Barry.

243. Look, Scully, I need your help.

244. Need you to find out what happened to him.

245. Anything— transcripts from therapy sessions,

246. hypnotic regressions,

247. anything about his abduction experience.

248. Mulder?

249. The lights just went out here.

250. What the hell is going on?

251. Tactical unit, what are you guys up to?

252. Nothing. Absolutely nothing, sir.

253. Ah, what the...?

254. Get down. Everybody, get down.

255. Tactical command. Shots have been fired.

256. Locate and report.

257. Locate and report.

258. Repeat— locate and report. (gunshots)

259. Negative. I've lost communication!

260. Wait! We're on it, sir!

261. We've lost our captured line.

262. We have either four or five shots fired!

263. What's the number in there? 555-2804.

264. Repeat— we have either four or five shots fired!

265. An electrical substation blew.

266. We've got no power up and down the block. Duane?

267. I told you.

268. Is everyone all right, Duane?

269. You didn't believe me, did you?

270. No, I-I believe you.

271. I just need to know if anybody's been shot.

272. I need towels.

273. I need towels.

274. Kimberly.

275. Kimberly.

276. He's going to bleed to death.

277. I guess we're going to need a doctor.

278. Now, you'll have almost full

279. ambient hearing loss in this ear.

280. Your sense of balance may be affected slightly,

281. particularly if you have to move quickly

282. or get into a physical situation.

283. If you get trapped or held in the building for some reason,

284. If you get trapped or held in the building for some reason,

285. we'll be able to warn you if there's a tactical assault.

286. Now, remember, he's either got four or five rounds left.

287. Now, there's a wireless mic

288. hidden in the top of this flak jacket.

289. Speaking in a normal tone of voice,

290. we should be able to hear

291. anything you say up to 100 yards.

292. Make every attempt to keep these devices concealed.

293. You put a normal telephone handset to that ear,

294. it'll cause feedback and reveal that you're wired.

295. You really want to do this? Yeah.

296. Your job will be to deliver

297. medical help to the hostage.

298. Anything else is just a bonus.

299. You are to get in and get out.

300. You are to get in and get out.

301. You are not to risk your own life.

302. And whatever you believe...

303. Don't jump into his delusion.

304. I can't negotiate with him if he thinks I believe him.

305. Right.

306. This is Agent Janus. He's a trained medic.

307. He'll work on the hostage.

308. You are to keep Duane Barry talking.

309. Like I said, if he's talking,

310. he's not going to shoot anybody, including you.

311. Now, I've got three snipers out there.

312. Anything you can do to get him to the front door.

313. All we need is one shot to the medulla oblongata.

314. All we need is one shot to the medulla oblongata.

315. Tac command, this is rooftop zero-two.

316. I have them in sight.

317. They're passing the fountain

318. and approaching the front entrance now.

319. Just unlock the door.

320. Move back.

321. Duane? Hands in the air.

322. Put the kit on the floor slowly.

323. We're unarmed.

324. We just want to help the injured.

325. Over here.

326. Face the door.

327. That's right.

328. Not armed, huh?

329. Not armed, huh?

330. You're FBI, aren't you?

331. Got a gun in the kit?

332. No.

333. Are you wearing a wire?

334. No. We're just here to help.

335. Okay.

336. Nobody's going to try anything, Duane.

337. That's right. Good. You want to work with him.

338. We just want to make sure no one else gets hurt.

339. Just do your business and get out.

340. How's he doing?

341. He's bad.

342. Hi. My name is Janus.

343. I'm a paramedic. Hold on.

344. We're going to take care of you.

345. They want to work with you, Duane,

346. but you got to work with them.

347. Why not let the others go?

348. Doc's going with me.

349. Then let the women go.

350. Were they here, Duane?

351. Were they here, Duane?

352. The light— was that them?

353. Don't try and BS Duane Barry.

354. We lost time.

355. I checked my watch.

356. Isn't that what happens— time stops?

357. Isn't it?

358. (loud heartbeat) Duane?

359. You're making it up.

360. Isn't that what they've been saying to you, Duane?

361. That you're making it up?

362. They say it's all inside my head.

363. They say it's all inside my head.

364. All they want to do is just give me more drugs.

365. I hear you, Duane.

366. You hear me 'cause I got a gun.

367. No. I believe your story.

368. No. You're feeding into his psychosis.

369. I know you're afraid.

370. I know the pain and the fear you must feel.

371. Just listen to me.

372. Don't try to identify with him.

373. I've talked to people, Duane.

374. People just like you, who nobody wanted to believe.

375. This man's going to die

376. unless we get him to a hospital.

377. unless we get him to a hospital.

378. Why don't you let him go, Duane?

379. There's no reason this man has to die.

380. Come on, Duane.

381. You've got the power.

382. Let him go.

383. Okay.

384. Good.

385. You made the right choice.

386. Now we're just going to move him carefully to the door.

387. No.

388. Baldy can go.

389. But you stay.

390. I'm trading the bald man for you.

391. (whispers): Damn it!

392. You're going to be all right, sir.

393. Now let's see how good a liar you are.

394. I'm telling the truth, Duane.

395. How could you ever know

396. How could you ever know

397. what Duane Barry's been through?

398. How could anyone know?

399. It happened to my sister.

400. Don't you think you can lie to save their lives.

401. I want some honesty!

402. I want some respect!

403. I'm tired of all the BS.

404. How does it happen, Duane?

405. Driving in your car?

406. Alone in bed at night?

407. When do they come to you?

408. You're paralyzed, aren't you?

409. Unable to move.

410. Sometimes you can't even breathe.

411. You feel an electric shock

412. go through your body, and then they're there.

413. He's going to push him right over the edge.

414. I need a clear picture of what's going on in there.

415. Right away.

416. Right away.

417. You're choosing a dangerous course, Agent Mulder.

418. There are beings, aren't there, Duane?

419. Are they tall or small?

420. No! No! Diminutive?

421. They take you, Duane, against your will.

422. He's gonna kill us.

423. You're powerless.

424. Sometimes you can't even speak.

425. It's always the same.

426. It's always the same.

427. Nobody can help you.

428. Where do they take you, Duane?

429. Is there a ship?

430. Do they take you to a ship, Duane?

431. How do you get there?

432. Are you conscious of being transported?

433. They're, uh...

434. they're talking to Duane Barry.

435. But they don't speak.

436. He can hear what they're saying.

437. They can... read his mind.

438. They can... read his mind.

439. That's right.

440. Abductees call it mindscan.

441. It's a kind of telepathy.

442. I'm telling 'em I don't want to go.

443. But they never listen.

444. They know what I'm saying.

445. But they just...

446. go right on about their business.

447. go right on about their business.

448. Tell him what their business is.

449. Tell him.

450. They take you aboard the ship to perform the tests.

451. They...

452. drilled my teeth.

453. They drilled holes in my damn teeth!

454. Yeah?

455. Who here can talk to an Agent Scully?

456. Agent Scully, it's Alex Krycek.

457. Where's Mulder?

458. He traded himself for one of the hostages.

459. What?

460. He's in with Duane Barry.

461. You've got to get him out of there.

462. You've got to get him out of there.

463. Well, they're working on it.

464. No, you've got to get him out of there now

465. or he's going to be killed.

466. How can you be sure?

467. Because Duane Barry is not what Mulder thinks he is.

468. How old was your sister when they took her?

469. She was eight.

470. I've seen kids sometimes, young girls.

471. What are they doing to them?

472. Doing tests.

473. You know...

474. testing them.

475. I tell them not to cry.

476. Are they hurting them?

477. Oh, yeah.

478. Sometimes...

479. sometimes it hurts real bad

480. and, uh... you just want to die, you know?

481. You know what it's like, sir?

482. It's like living with a gun to your head

483. It's like living with a gun to your head

484. and never knowing when it's going to go off.

485. You can let the others go, Duane.

486. Let the others go and take me.

487. Oh... they heard you talking like that,

488. they're going to have your ass.

489. I don't care about that, Duane.

490. No.

491. I wouldn't do that to you.

492. I wouldn't do that to you.

493. Besides, Doc and I got an appointment.

494. Ain't that right, Doc?

495. We got a picture.

496. Mulder is here, opposite the doctor.

497. Mulder is here, opposite the doctor.

498. The women are on the north wall.

499. We can't see the east wall.

500. Duane Barry must be there. Hold on a second.

501. No, I don't think you understand what I'm telling you.

502. I just flew down here from Washington...

503. We've got a situation in progress. All right,

504. well, then let me talk to someone who's in charge.

505. You are. Calm down, Scully.

506. Don't tell me to calm down. I'm not going to calm down

507. until I can talk to someone

508. who will listen to what I'm saying.

509. What's the problem here?

510. I'm Special Agent Dana Scully, and I have

511. information that is vital to your negotiations.

512. What information?

513. I think there has been a critical misjudgment here.

514. I think there has been a critical misjudgment here.

515. This man who claims to be under the control of aliens—

516. his... his mental health history describes

517. a rare state of psychosis.

518. As you can see from his medical records,

519. in 1982, Duane Barry was shot in the line of duty,

520. the bullet piercing his bilateral frontal lobes.

521. Right.

522. The injury left him

523. nearly incapable of functioning in society.

524. It effectively destroyed the moral center of his brain.

525. Now, almost 100 years ago,

526. there was a famous case— a man named Gage

527. had a blasting rod pierce the same region.

528. had a blasting rod pierce the same region.

529. And what effect did it have?

530. He became a pathological liar,

531. suffering from severe delusions.

532. His behavior was characterized as bizarre and violent

533. with a tendency to act out his fantasies.

534. How did you get involved in this case?

535. Agent Mulder called me.

536. We used to work together.

537. Well, if this is true,

538. he's got your former partner completely fooled.

539. Is there a way that I can reach him with this information?

540. Is there a way that I can reach him with this information?

541. The government knows about it, you know.

542. They're even in on it sometimes.

543. Right there in the room when they come.

544. They work together

545. with a, uh, secret, uh, corporation.

546. Who in the government?

547. Who in the government?

548. A man, the military.

549. They're all in it together.

550. The government knows why they're here,

551. but they wouldn't dare let the truth out.

552. So they cooperate.

553. You're going to have to deal

554. with resolving this situation, Duane,

555. sooner or later.

556. I'm tired.

557. There's no other way out.

558. You've got to tell them what you want to do.

559. You've got to tell them what you want to do.

560. I just want to go back to the place.

561. What place?

562. Where it first started.

563. Where they first came and got me.

564. Where is that?

565. A mountain.

566. We went, uh, up and up,

567. ascending...

568. ascending to the stars.

569. I'm not going again.

570. I'm not going again.

571. Mulder, it's me.

572. Listen to me.

573. You cannot trust Duane Barry.

574. He is a brain-damaged psychopath who took a bullet in the head.

575. He is not what you think he is.

576. What?

577. How do they find you each time?

578. Implants...

579. my gums, sinus cavities...

580. my gums, sinus cavities...

581. and my belly button— tracking devices.

582. Mulder, he could snap at any time.

583. He has a history of irrational and violent behavior.

584. Now, you have to work towards resolving this.

585. Now, you have his trust.

586. You have to try and negotiate with him.

587. Why not let the women go, Duane?

588. They'll deal with you if you let the women go.

589. That's good.

590. That's good, Mulder.

591. Now, keep him talking.

592. HRT is moving into position,

593. HRT is moving into position,

594. and unless you can get him to free the hostages,

595. they're going to execute a tactical plan.

596. The women are of no consequence to you.

597. Let them go.

598. It's the right thing to do, Duane.

599. Okay, but he stays.

600. Go on. Get out of here.

601. Go on. Get out of here.

602. Get up. Go on.

603. Get out of here. Go on.

604. I'm...

605. I just want to say that I believe you.

606. The women are clear.

607. I got him, standing, center room... moving...

608. This is the countdown, Mulder. They're coming at you.

609. Position one ready.

610. Coming at you, number one.

611. Coming at you, number one.

612. We're going to need transportation.

613. What do you want, Duane? A car?

614. I don't know.

615. Do you know where you want to go?

616. They're going to tell me.

617. Duane, you can't leave here

618. if you don't know where you want to go.

619. Duane!

620. What? Come here.

621. Hold your fire. You lost your line.

622. There's something I want to ask you.

623. There's something I want to ask you.

624. What?

625. You didn't believe me.

626. I had to earn your trust.

627. Now there's something I got to know.

628. Are you making any of this up?

629. You, uh...

630. calling Duane Barry a liar now?

631. calling Duane Barry a liar now?

632. No.

633. You think I make it all up?

634. No, I don't.

635. I'm sorry.

636. You're sorry?

637. Duane, will you listen to me for a second?

638. You're just like all the others, aren't you?

639. Duane. You say you believe me.

640. Duane, I do believe you. But you don't.

641. I believe you! No! You're lying just like everybody else!

642. I believe you, Duane!

643. I trusted you! I trusted you like a fool!

644. Can I say... Can I... Can I say something?

645. Duane, can I say something?

646. I know you're tired,

647. but there's something you've forgotten to do.

648. When you let the women leave,

649. you left the door unlocked.

650. Go lock the door, Duane.

651. Go lock the door.

652. Go lock the door, Duane.

653. Go lock it.

654. They could get in here.

655. Go lock the door.

656. Go lock the door.

657. Agent Mulder! Dr. Hakkie!

658. He's down! He's down!

659. 1400 block, South Parker.

660. Code three. Repeat— code three.

661. You okay, Mulder?

662. Yeah.

663. Whatever you're feeling, you did the right thing.

664. Yeah, it's just that, uh...

665. I believe him.

666. Sometimes when you want to believe so badly,

667. you end up... looking too hard.

668. Agent Mulder, thanks for coming.

669. No. I was surprised to get your call.

670. Yeah, well, as it turned out,

671. whatever your impression of the way it was handled,

672. I didn't get to thank you for going out there

673. and putting it on the line.

674. What?

675. I don't know. I guess I thought

676. maybe you called me down here to chew me out.

677. maybe you called me down here to chew me out.

678. (chuckling): Oh.

679. How's he doing? Duane?

680. They almost lost him, but he's stabilized.

681. They've got him listed as critical still.

682. I checked on his record with the Bureau.

683. It was exemplary.

684. His accident was something of a mystery.

685. Shot by his own weapon in a drug stakeout,

686. Shot by his own weapon in a drug stakeout,

687. left for dead in the woods.

688. He was never the same.

689. Lost everything— wife, kids, house...

690. The fine thread of sanity.

691. I actually called you down here

692. for another reason, Agent Mulder.

693. Uh...

694. in the X-rays, the surgeon found several pieces of metal

695. in his gums, in his sinus cavity and one in the abdomen.

696. in his gums, in his sinus cavity and one in the abdomen.

697. I had them checked— I felt you'd want to know—

698. and there were tiny drill holes

699. in his left and right rear molars.

700. A dentist who examined them

701. said they could not have been done

702. with any of the current equipment in use.

703. Not without chipping or damaging the tooth.

704. Anyway, I thought you ought to know.

705. This could just be a piece of shrapnel.

706. Duane Barry did a tour of duty in Vietnam.

707. It was right where he said it would be, Scully.

708. Along with the ones in his gums and sinus.

709. And you think that this was implanted?

710. Well, if it was, that would mean

711. Duane Barry is telling the truth.

712. Duane Barry is telling the truth.

713. Or some version of the truth.

714. Look, I'll-I'll take this down to ballistics.

715. We can have this cleared up in a second.

716. Let me just make a slight adjustment.

717. What do you think?

718. Could be a shell casing

719. or a small artillery fragment.

720. The edges are dull, but it could have been

721. white-hot when it entered the body.

722. That would make sense.

723. But look at this.

724. What?

725. These small markings.

726. See them here?

727. Mmm. Looks like some kind of a stamp.

728. Mmm. Looks like some kind of a stamp.

729. Like it's been tooled or etched.

730. Pretty fine work, too.

731. This square we're looking at is only ten microns across.

732. Strange.

733. $11.14.

734. Thank you.

735. I'll, uh, be right with you.

736. I have to cash out my drawer.

737. I have to cash out my drawer.

738. What happened?

739. Did you touch something?

740. Uh, I don't know what happened.

741. Hello. This is Fox Mulder.

742. Leave a message, please. (beep)

743. Mulder, it's me.

744. I just had something incredibly strange happen.

745. I just had something incredibly strange happen.

746. This piece of metal that they took out of Duane Barry—

747. it has some kind of a code on it.

748. I ran it through a scanner,

749. and some kind of a serial number came up.

750. What the hell is this thing, Mulder?

751. It's almost as if...

752. it's almost as if somebody was using it to catalogue him.

753. Come on, will you?

754. Mulder!

755. Come on!

756. I need your help!

757. Mulder!

758. Mulder!
