The X-Files 2x3

1. Hey, Ed.

2. You okay?

3. It's blood.

4. It's only a paper cut.

5. It's only a paper cut.

6. Um, listen, Ed, I need to talk to you.

7. Ed, uh...

8. this is never easy.

9. Everybody down here sure likes you a lot, Funsch.

10. And I know it's tough

11. 'cause you're new to this area.

12. 'cause you're new to this area.

13. Ed, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to let you go.

14. I mean, your work is first-rate,

15. and like I said,

16. you're a good guy.

17. But you know the story—

18. cutbacks and seniority,

19. and you're low man on the pole.

20. Could I work part-time?

21. Guys took up a collection today.

22. Guys took up a collection today.

23. It's a hundred bucks.

24. Look, why don't you stay on till the end of the week.

25. Excuse me.

26. Hey, Ralph, how you doing?

27. All right.

28. Thanks for coming on such short notice.

29. I realize the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit

30. normally profiles murder suspects

31. that are still at large,

32. and it must be odd being asked to profile our suspects,

33. all of whom are dead.

34. I am relieved the Bureau answered our request

35. and sent you.

36. Because in all honesty, Agent Mulder,

37. Because in all honesty, Agent Mulder,

38. whatever's going on here is way over our heads.

39. The suspect's body is out on the sidewalk.

40. We're holding the security guard who shot him.

41. The witnesses that were in the elevator

42. are down at the hospital.

43. You can talk to them whenever you're ready.

44. I've asked all the businesses in the building

45. I've asked all the businesses in the building

46. to close for the day.

47. We've done our best to preserve the area for you.

48. We've thoroughly photographed the scene.

49. The area has been sketched,

50. but we haven't dusted for prints, yet.

51. We wanted to wait for you

52. before we collected further evidence.

53. Was this damaged during the incident?

54. I'll find out.

55. May I see the suspect?

56. Things like this aren't supposed to happen here.

57. Things like this aren't supposed to happen here.

58. A 42-year-old real estate agent

59. murders four strangers with his bare hands?

60. That's not supposed to happen anywhere.

61. Since Colonial times, there's only been

62. three murders in this area.

63. In the last six months, seven people have killed 22.

64. Per capita, that's higher than the combined homicide rate

65. of Detroit, D.C. and Los Angeles.

66. This town is not any of those places.

67. In Franklin, you'll never have to pull off the road

68. to make way for a celebrity driving with a gun to his head.

69. to make way for a celebrity driving with a gun to his head.

70. In each incident, the suspect was killed?

71. Suicide by cop.

72. Each incident occurred in a public place.

73. The suspect went crazy

74. and refused to desist when ordered.

75. Officers used deadly force in order to save lives.

76. Were autopsies conducted on the suspects

77. for substance abuse?

78. Agent Mulder, this town is mainly made up

79. of apple and cherry growers.

80. These folks don't drink much.

81. They certainly don't do drugs.

82. Coroner's tests were negative.

83. This is dispatch.

84. Can you provide additional backup for unit 42?

85. Can you provide additional backup for unit 42?

86. Played softball with this guy over Labor Day.

87. He was one of those nice guys—

88. couldn't play and didn't bitch about

89. being stuck in right field.

90. What's wrong with right field?

91. Always the first one to shake hands at the end of the game.

92. Didn't matter whether he won or lost.

93. Got to have an arm to play right field.

94. Bought a round of beers afterwards,

95. even though he didn't drink.

96. even though he didn't drink.

97. I played right field.

98. Let's have this analyzed by the Bureau's lab.

99. What the hell could bring anyone to do this?

100. Unit 12, unit 12, please keep me advised.

101. Just have to wait for the man to finish, okay?

102. Mommy.

103. Baby, you're bleeding.

104. Come on, tilt your head back.

105. Come on, tilt your head back.

106. I told you to leave it alone.

107. Okay?

108. Now, don't touch it

109. or it'll bleed again.

110. Tilt your head back.

111. Good girl.

112. Hey! Hey!

113. What the hell's wrong with you?

114. Perpetrators of mass murders

115. are divided into two classifications:

116. the spree killer and the serial.

117. The sudden violent outburst in a public locale

118. and the suspect's disregard for anonymity or survival

119. define the Franklin incidents as spree killings.

120. The confounding element of these profiles is that,

121. given their backgrounds, (computer beeps)

122. the perpetrators would be statistically more likely

123. the victims of violent crimes rather than the originators.

124. the victims of violent crimes rather than the originators.

125. The killers were all middle-income,

126. responsible people.

127. None with a history of violence.

128. Relatives and friends reported only minor displays

129. of dysfunctional behavior—

130. sleep disorders, headaches, eating difficulties—

131. but witnesses did report the last suspect displayed

132. a claustrophobic reaction.

133. I'm convinced an outside factor is responsible,

134. but I must concede frustration

135. but I must concede frustration

136. as to a determination of the cause.

137. A residue discovered on the fingers

138. of the most recent perpetrator was analyzed and reported to be

139. an undefined but nontoxic organic chemical

140. found on plants,

141. perhaps remaining from gardening.

142. There have been reported abductee paranoia

143. in UFO mass abduction cases.

144. I was wondering when you'd get to that.

145. I find no evidence of this to be the case.

146. The single connecting trace evidence to the killings

147. The single connecting trace evidence to the killings

148. is the destruction of an electronic device

149. at the crime scene.

150. A pager, a fax machine,

151. a cellular phone, a gas pump digital display.

152. In all honesty, Scully, I've never had a more difficult time

153. developing a profile.

154. There is no way to know who will be a killer

155. or who will be killed.

156. Hello?

157. Hello?

158. You're late.

159. I'm sorry.

160. I called earlier.

161. A deadline came up at work.

162. If it's ready, I'll just pay you and be out of here.

163. How did you manage to break that anyhow?

164. Oh, it's a long story.

165. Did you fix it?

166. It's fixed.

167. What do I owe you?

168. I'll tell you.

169. In fixing that, I found some other problems.

170. Serious problems, Mrs. McRoberts.

171. Come back here. I'll show you.

172. I'm sorry.

173. My husband's waiting for me.

174. My husband's waiting for me.

175. I have to go. Okay.

176. But you ain't gonna go very far unless you get this fixed.

177. Come here.

178. This is a diagnostic test

179. of your engine.

180. You're supposed to have

181. an output of 168 horses

182. at 6,200 RPMs.

183. You're nowhere near that.

184. Come over here.

185. Next to me.

186. I want you to take a look at this.

187. Well, first of all, leaking oil like crazy.

188. Your throw rods are chattering, valves need adjustment.

189. Over here,

190. you got a couple engine mounts that should be replaced.

191. If you don't believe me, take a look here.

192. Agent Mulder?

193. Larry Winter, county supervisor.

194. Larry Winter, county supervisor.

195. Uh, pardon my rubber.

196. Can you tell me if this murder is more of the same?

197. They don't seem to be connected.

198. Well, should I be relieved or more scared?

199. I mean, is this the start of copycat killers?

200. Larry, it's not a copy of the other homicides.

201. This wasn't committed in a public area.

202. The suspect fled, covering his tracks.

203. The killer appears not to have had

204. a premeditated weapon.

205. They are connected.

206. Mrs. McRoberts?

207. Yes?

208. This is Sheriff Spencer.

209. I'm Agent Fox Mulder with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

210. May we come in?

211. I'm late for work.

212. You can blame me.

213. Been having some car trouble?

214. That's my husband's department.

215. May I speak with him?

216. He just took the car to Pittsburgh

217. for a business meeting.

218. Is it okay if I have my breakfast?

219. It's the day's most important meal.

220. It's the day's most important meal.

221. Um, this invoice— it was, uh, signed by you.

222. Did you pick up the car last night?

223. Yes.

224. Can you describe to me

225. exactly how the dashboard readout was damaged?

226. Mrs. McRoberts?

227. I did it.

228. I broke it.

229. Why?

230. Mrs. McRoberts?

231. Did you see something in the readout?

232. Did you see something in the readout?

233. Mrs. McRoberts?

234. I can help.

235. Mrs. McRoberts?

236. Stop! No!

237. Several anomalies were discovered

238. during postmortem analysis

239. that were undetected in previous autopsies.

240. Levels of adrenaline are known to be high

241. in cases of violent death—

242. twice as much as in victims of natural death.

243. This subject's levels were 200 times normal.

244. The adrenal gland displayed extensive adrenal hemorrhage,

245. yet not from disease, but rather from wear.

246. yet not from disease, but rather from wear.

247. Other physiological evidence present

248. indicated episodes of intense phobia.

249. Analysis of the vitreous humor extracted from the eyeball

250. indicated the presence

251. of high concentration of an undetermined chemical compound.

252. This compound, at its base,

253. is similar to the substance analyzed earlier

254. on a perpetrator's finger.

255. Although further qualitative analysis must be performed,

256. it is my opinion that this chemical,

257. it is my opinion that this chemical,

258. when reacting with adrenaline and other compounds

259. secreted during phobic episodes,

260. creates a substance similar to lysergic acid diethylamide:

261. LSD.

262. Pardon me.

263. I'd like to apply for a job.

264. Sorry, they're not accepting applications at this time.

265. Sorry, they're not accepting applications at this time.

266. WOMAN (over P.A.): Attention, shoppers,

267. we have a special on exterior paint today

268. in our home improvement department.

269. Take advantage of the special on exterior paint today

270. in our home improvement department.

271. Sir, may we ask you to sign up for the blood drive?

272. Sir, may we ask you to sign up for the blood drive?

273. Sir?

274. Are you all right?

275. Sir?

276. Hmm.

277. In our April edition of The Lone Gunmen,

278. we ran an article on the CIA's

279. new CCDTH-2138 fiber-optic lens micro video camera.

280. Small enough to be placed on the back of a fly.

281. Imagine being one of those flies on the wall of the Oval Office.

282. Been there, done that.

283. That is a Eurasian cluster fly.

284. They infest vegetation like apples or cherries

285. They infest vegetation like apples or cherries

286. and can inflict a great deal of damage to crops.

287. This one's probably been irradiated

288. to control propagation.

289. Or agents of competing

290. South American agricultural corporations,

291. posing as Franklin city employees,

292. are releasing fertile flies

293. to destroy the crop.

294. Nope. This bug's been nuked.

295. It was a fine effort, though.

296. Have you ever come across this chemical compound?

297. LSDM.

298. Obviously, you haven't read our August edition of TLG.

299. Obviously, you haven't read our August edition of TLG.

300. Oh, I'm sorry, boys.

301. It arrived the same day

302. as my subscription to Celebrity Skin.

303. Come over here.

304. Where is that?

305. So, Mulder, where's your little partner?

306. She wouldn't come.

307. She's afraid of her love for you.

308. She's tasty.

309. You know, Frohike,

310. it's men like you

311. that give perversion a bad name.

312. Here... toxic pesticides.

313. Here... toxic pesticides.

314. The chemical you have in that report

315. is called lysergic dimethrin.

316. It's an unreleased experimental synthetic botanical insecticide.

317. It attempts to act as a natural pheromone.

318. LSDM is sprayed on the plant,

319. which invokes a fear response in the pest.

320. You know, "Get out of here, there's danger."

321. The insect reacts and leaves the plant.

322. Why won't they release it?

323. Is it possible it affects humans in the same way?

324. Possible?

325. Let me show you something.

326. Let me show you something.

327. This is actual newsreel footage taken in the '50s.

328. They're spraying DDT—

329. a chemical the government did release

330. and determined to be safe.

331. 30 years later, they found out

332. that women exposed to it had higher rates of breast cancer.

333. They convinced local officials it was even safe

334. to spray on children.

335. Took a decade of bureaucratic

336. and industry heel-dragging before it was banned.

337. Different chemicals, same stunts.

338. They just learned how not to be so obvious.

339. They just learned how not to be so obvious.

340. Hey, Frohike, can I borrow those?

341. If I can have Scully's phone number.

342. Stealth helicopters?

343. Experimental pesticides

344. responsible for violent behavior?

345. I saw the chopper from two different locations.

346. Look at my skin. Feel my hair.

347. The insecticide is still on me.

348. I checked up on you.

349. You have a penchant for... spooky evidence.

350. Don't start

351. with that tired crap.

352. Don't start diverting blame.

353. Hang on a second here... Look, if you're the one

354. who's responsible for the illegal spraying,

355. then the sooner you take responsibility,

356. the sooner people will stop dying.

357. The killers all resided near heavily sprayed areas.

358. The killers all resided near heavily sprayed areas.

359. You don't live here, Mulder.

360. I live here.

361. I have my heart in this town.

362. I have three children.

363. I'm not going to dump poison on them.

364. Yeah, well, if it's so safe, why was it done in secret?

365. What kind of a crusade are you on?

366. Answer the question!

367. Are we spraying?

368. This county lives on money generated from its crops.

369. The irradiated flies were not effective.

370. The irradiated flies were not effective.

371. The delays to get approval to spray

372. would have caused millions in crop damage.

373. Look at the hell they raised in California over malathion.

374. Meanwhile, people's lives were being ruined by a... a damn bug.

375. Ruined?

376. 23 people are dead.

377. There is no proof whatsoever

378. the spray caused violent behavior.

379. It was proven to me to be safe.

380. By who? Who proved it to you?

381. I'm sorry, Mulder, he's right.

382. I'd love to tell you that I flew 300 miles

383. in the middle of the night to perform tests that proved

384. that you're about to become the next Charles Manson,

385. but I find little physiological evidence

386. that states that LSDM has toxically affected you,

387. even after massive ingestion.

388. Scully, your own autopsy reported

389. the killer had chemical anomalies.

390. Yes, but you are proof that it wasn't from exposure to LSDM.

391. May I see that chart, Agent Scully?

392. May I see that chart, Agent Scully?

393. Sure.

394. Look here.

395. These are normal...

396. which were perhaps subjected to repeated LSDM spray...

397. Scully, are you familiar

398. with subliminal messages?

399. You mean like... sex in ice cubes of liquor ads?

400. That's paranoia.

401. No, it's a fact that some department stores

402. No, it's a fact that some department stores

403. use subliminal messages in their ambient music

404. to deter shoplifting.

405. And the Russians have been using advanced

406. electroencephalographic techniques to control behavior.

407. And how is this connected with the spraying?

408. Electronic devices were destroyed by every perpetrator.

409. I'm still waiting.

410. The insecticide LSDM is known to invoke

411. a fear response in cluster flies.

412. What if the chemical causes the same reaction in humans?

413. All the perpetrators were phobic.

414. Taber was claustrophobic.

415. McRoberts's husband stated she had a paranoia about rape.

416. McRoberts's husband stated she had a paranoia about rape.

417. The insecticide heightened their already existent phobia

418. to an unbearable level.

419. Then the electronic devices

420. relayed messages that told them specifically what to do

421. with their fear in order to alleviate it.

422. The messages were relayed purposely.

423. By who?

424. He's probably one of those people

425. He's probably one of those people

426. that thinks Elvis is dead.

427. Mulder, I was wrong.

428. Exposure to the insecticide does induce paranoia.

429. I think this area

430. is being subjected to a controlled experiment.

431. Controlled by who?

432. By the government?

433. By a corporation?

434. By Reticulans?

435. They've done it before.

436. DDT in the '50s, Agent Orange,

437. germ warfare on unsuspecting neighborhoods.

438. Yes, but why, Mulder?

439. Why would they intentionally create

440. a populace that destroys itself?

441. a populace that destroys itself?

442. Fear.

443. It's the oldest tool of power.

444. If you're distracted by fear of those around you,

445. it keeps you from seeing the actions of those above.

446. I just had a talk with Mr. Winter.

447. I've persuaded him to a compromise.

448. He's agreed to stop the spraying immediately

449. and to blood testing extensively

450. of people exposed to the spray area.

451. But?

452. But...

453. the official explanation for the testing

454. the official explanation for the testing

455. cannot be linked to the side effects of LSDM.

456. Franklin and Venango Counties

457. are participating in an important nationwide study

458. on cholesterol.

459. Volunteers will be coming to your door.

460. Or you may report at your convenience

461. to Franklin Community General.

462. The procedure is very simple and painless.

463. Just a little prick on the fingertip

464. and your participation is complete, and appreciated.

465. and your participation is complete, and appreciated.

466. So, remember, cholesterol screening can save your life.

467. So, when those volunteers come to your door,

468. answer readily, or you may report at your convenience

469. to Franklin Community General.

470. I need test results on the blood samples,

471. and double check.

472. Are you sure?

473. Uh-huh.

474. Last area just reported in.

475. Okay. These are the sectors that have tested negative.

476. This is a list of people, for one reason or another,

477. haven't checked out.

478. There's about 25.

479. There's about 25.

480. Only seven more to go.

481. This is odd.

482. Frustrated Jehovah's Witness?

483. Door's unlocked.

484. Here it is.

485. Edward Funsch, age 52.

486. No diploma, no vehicle or driver's license.

487. Navy radio man.

488. Wife died ten years ago, no kids.

489. No known family.

490. Just been laid off. Medical history?

491. Nothing. And he hasn't seen a doctor in decades.

492. When was the blood tester here?

493. About 10:30 this morning.

494. 10:30?

495. The blood test.

496. I know what he's afraid of.

497. And I know where he's going.

498. Hey, wait! Stop!

499. Stop! Stop!

500. Hey!

501. All right, all right!

502. All right, all right!

503. Hold on a second.

504. Thank you.

505. Pardon me.

506. Wait for the next stop.

507. Please! I'm on the wrong bus!

508. Wait for the next stop.

509. Open the door!

510. (screaming): Open the door!

511. Open the door, damn it!

512. Ralph, I want you to take Lou and post up.

513. Down there, far end.

514. Uh, C-1, this is Xray-4.

515. Negative on that north-south line.

516. I copy that.

517. If he's on it, it's gonna be this line.

518. If he's on it, it's gonna be this line.

519. Here it comes.

520. Get the uniforms out of sight.

521. Have you seen this man?

522. Yeah, I picked him up.

523. Drove four feet, and then he went ape-wire.

524. Where'd you let him out?

525. Near the college.

526. We'll have to wait him out.

527. I don't think he's waiting.

528. Scully, anything?

529. Nothing.

530. Get down! (people clamoring)

531. Get down! Get down!

532. Everybody down! Get down! Get down!

533. Get down! Get down!

534. I've seen that, hoss.

535. I've seen that, and I don't want to see that again, baby.

536. All units, forthwith, Franklin College.

537. Shots fired.

538. Send emergency vehicles.

539. Put it down!

540. Put it down!

541. Don't kill me.

542. Then put it down, Ed.

543. I can't.

544. They won't let me.

545. I know they won't, Ed.

546. I know they won't let you.

547. Then...

548. you make me put it down, then.

549. you make me put it down, then.

550. You do it.

551. If you don't put it down,

552. I'm going to have to shoot you.

553. Or you're going to have to shoot me.

554. There's going to be blood, everywhere.

555. Don't kill me.

556. It's all right.

557. Got it. Coming through.

558. Agent Scully will examine him at the hospital.

559. You can call her there.

560. I want unrestricted access to him for questioning.

561. Mulder, you know more about

562. what happened to him than he does.

563. Scully.

564. Hello?

565. Mulder, is that you?

566. Mulder, where are you?

567. Mulder?

568. Mulder, where are you?
